Don’t Leave Me This Way

Whilst the next line of the song might be ‘I can’t survive’, there is little doubt that Arsenal can should there be any departure by what could be termed ‘major players’ in the summer. Arsene has emphasised in recent weeks that his major task this summer is keeping the squad together, adding some quality to the players who are already there. Yesterday, he seemed to be making a direct appeal to those who are considering pastures new to remain at the club to take it to the next level. Primary targets of such thoughts were Alexander Hleb, Mathieu Flamini and Cesc Fabregas,

You can go to Real Madrid and Barcelona, but you have no more guarantees to win trophies. From this season we should get the belief we can win trophies and come back to win the title. It would be criminal not to believe we could do it because we were so close this year…That is why I am so insistent that I keep this team together and that we try to come back and have a good go next year.

The situation with players wanting to win is nothing unique to Arsenal. Samuel Eto’o has indicated that he is ready to leave the Camp Nou if the team is not going to win anything next season. His situation is slightly different because, in his own words, he has ‘won everything in Spain’. Arsenal have won nothing with the current squad although performed better than the professional pundits predicted at the start of the season.

Flamini has just over a week to decide his future, although I doubt Arsene will shut the door on him if that deadline is not met. The risk the player takes though is that Arsene signs someone who can fit into the same slot. That said, he may not have to.

Gilberto Silva is distancing himself from the continual reports of his imminent departure. The Brazilian captain is intending to sit down with Wenger to discuss his future once the season is over,

I still have one more year. To be honest, I really want to stay and I’ve always expressed that.

Manuel Almunia said that Arsene wanted players who got along with each other rather than sparking division. Gilberto more than anyone typifies what the Spaniard was referring to when he observed,

Of course, I’m upset that I’ve not played much this season because last year I played the whole season and this year has been really frustrating. But you need to be professional, respect the manager’s point of view and help the other players to the maximum that I possibly can

Gilberto then turned his attention to Theo Walcott’s progress in recent games, backing up Wenger’s own view of the player. Arsene praised his performance against Reading,

It was his most complete game…Theo is not a monster, but he has great body power. When he starts on the first five yards, it is like you throw him away. You do not see him, he is gone. That is more important than just more power. But the way we play, we can take advantage of his qualities. Before he was always a bit out of the physical contact side of the game, now he looks for it. I told him he had to be more aggressive and determined. He is that now. I feel next season began on Saturday for him. I don’t know yet if I will start with him for the rest of the season, but there is a good chance yes

The looming ban for Alex Hleb makes that much more likely with the shortage of wide players. Arsene could pair Walcott with Adebayor, putting van Persie and Eboue on the flanks but we shall see with Monday’s visit to Pride Park being the next match.

Arsene did comment that Walcott needs to aim for double figures in his goal tally next season. It is a commendable target but in order to do so, the player has to be given more starts otherwise such a target is pie in the sky; no matter how many half an hours or twenty minutes he is given, to expect Walcott to play on the wing and achieve that target through a series of cameo’s is unrealistic and unfair on the player.

The experimentation for the remainder of the season seems to be continuing with Lukasz Fabianski set to take over from Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia between the sticks at Derby and Sunderland as well as the last home game against Everton. You have to wonder what will happen when Bacary Sagna returns to full fitness as well. With as dependable a right back as the Frenchman, there is no logical reason for Toure to continue there. Will that mean Alex Song being dropped or does he get the chance to show what he can do in his favoured position of central midfield? Given that he and Johan Djourou are believed to be the club’s long-term future, it would be the opportunity to blood them.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Song should play alongside Cesc against Derby, but i expect the boss will prefer Giberto –

    Fabianski

    Eboue, Toure, Gallas, Clichy
Theo, Song/Gilberto Cesc, Hleb (if not banned!)
    RvP, Ade

  2. Your first paragraph is very relevant. It is more important to keep our important players than to get new players in.

AW must have some worries about it or he wouldn’t have said what he has.

That is not to say we will not get some new players in but I would be very surprised if Eto was 1 of them.

I find it strange that players in teams, that have maybe underperformed, don’t seem to look at themselves as part of that whole. Paddy used to do that at times, especially when he wasn’t contributing that much.

It will be another long summer.

In reply to more of Howard’s ‘zeno’ twaddle:

We are currently on a very respectable total of 74 points.

GG’s championship winning teams got 76 & 83 points, by far his best totals.

As a renowned chartered accountant, I am sure that you can do the maths to realise that we can still match GG’s best ever points total.

Are you calling GG’s english teams crap?

Winning trophies is only the “be all & end all” for the glory hunters who have no perspective & no soul.

We are building a team that was so nearly there this season.

  3. play willshire wow what a prospect have been watching him recently he is like a hleb/messi clone and only 16 i think you might see him on the bench before the end of the season

  4. I managed to catch the Arsenal reserves beating West Ham 2-0 on Arsenal TV last night.Great to see the boss there, undoubtedly already licking his wounds and sharpening his tools for the next fight.

He should have all of our full support, but that’s just my opinion.

It’s not easy to watch football at the moment but the reserves were a nice place to take a relaxing view.  Both sides played young line ups and in our own was aplenty with sparkling talent and potential.  It’s always a gamble judging the youngsters at this stage and many a starlet has not made it the distance into our starting eleven but with that point conceded we have quite a little player in Jack Wilshere.
The commentators compared him to Alex Hleb, but for me the lad looked closer to Joe Cole or maybe Samir Nasri from Marseilles.  He is short but mobile with two great feet both deft in control or with the pass.  He showed a lovely neat dribble off the right flank with a sweetly timed left footed through ball to set up Rui Fonte for the first and followed that with a beautiful curling long range strike for the second.  It would have had any of the Premiership big hitters purring.  I’m sure Ronaldo or Henry would have milked it for all it was worth, the cameras then shot to Wenger who was sitting in solitary up high in the stands and the smile he beamed was enough to lighten the load of a torrid few weeks.

The lad looks very special as they say, if he had half a yard more pace we might have seen more of him or maybe not considering his tender years.

He is small still, although did not look particularly light but then at that level, maybe that would not be exposed. To be sixteen and so assured he looks a natural attacking midfielder, and I had not seen any of him previously, I was left well cheered and hopeful for his future and for that of our club.

Remind me to try not to get too excited by our youth players before they hatch.

  5. Yes, I saw it too Danny.

He really does look very special & you wonder if AW will be tempted to give Wilshere 10 minutes, in one of the 3 remaining games.

Another lad who has really impressed me is Jay Emmanuel Thomas. A Diaby clone but with a bit of bite about him.

It hard to tell though. I remember thinking a lad called David Noble was a stand out c2000 but he never made it big time. He is at Bristol City now, I believe.

Also years ago AFC won the youth cup & there was a player, who I thought was definitely a no hoper……Pat Rice- 400+ games , League & Cup winner & for years an excellent captain.

  6. Its a shame but it does look as though we will be saying good bye to Flamini. If he were to sign it would have been done already. Unfortunately for him I do not believe he has the right fit for Italian football. Like Henry, he will struggle there. Its a bad move for him after finally establishing himself at Arsenal to just move on is a big mistake. Gilberto while I will be happy if he stays, is not the right man to hold that position for an entire season. Arsenal will need to sign a strong defense minded midfielder with the ability to pass the ball. Personally I think Scott Parker would excell playing in our midfield alongside Cesc. Also with Vela coming in for next season Wenger should concentrate on bringing in a right sided player, maybe Robinho and push Eboue as second choice right back. He should sell Bendtner who doesnt look very well liked by his team mates and buy Huntelaar. A strike force of RVP, Adebayor, Walcot and Huntellar, with Dudu on the mend will have any defence shitting themselves! Then the biggest decision Wenger needs to make is on Central defence. Toure and Gallas cannot play together. Senderos looks like he will never be completely at ease. We need a Vidic or a Carragher alongside either Toure or Gallas.

  7. @Flint “I find it strange that players in teams, that have maybe underperformed, don’t seem to look at themselves as part of that whole.”

    Exactly!

Although I don’t think anyone of the three will leave, If they do we just have to get on with it. We were all panicking when Henry left and it didn’t turn out so bad after all.

  8. YW, Djourou was injured in the warm up so he wont play anymore football for a few games.

Wilshere and Barazite look the real deal to me. how do you keep both of them happy in reserve football for another 2 to 3 seasons? Surely you cant. some players like Rooney and Cesc are just ready and bursting to play at 17. Young Jack looks like a left footed Joe Cole – all the same moves. Joe Cole was never that good at 16!

  9. I can’t see it Flint. Wenger may decide he wants absolutely nothing to do with any potential Theo style hype, especially as the lad is English I think, although he hardly seemed to help himself with that in the past. Might be an interesting message for our youngsters in waiting mind. The likes of Theo, Denilson, Diaby Etc. Emerge now or moveover there’s more to come! Wow, I almost sounded impatient there!

  10. The trouble is how to blood them. It explains why Wenger is loath to buy big. Particularly if you compare to much lauded buys Babel and Malouda who have produced little to nothing this season.

I think Hleb would be a big loss he and Cesc have a great partnership and his close ball control is better than Ronaldo’s he just doesn’t score goals.

  11. I think Hleb would be a big loss he and Cesc have a great partnership and his close ball control is better than Ronaldo’s he just doesn’t score goals

The last line says it all. With Arsenal, he has a chance to be part of a team with great potential. However, if he leaves, I doubt if he will flourish in Italy. He is supposed to be an attacking midfielder but he has less assists and certainly a lot less goals than Cesc.

  12. How many players can unlock a massed defence like Hleb? he can play those eye of the needle passes. he also wins us tons of penalties. I love to watch Hleb play. Forget his goals, he makes goals directly and indirectly and is one of our experienced players. he scares the hell out of the opposition.
If Arsenal fans dont appreciate him, Madrid or Milan fans will.

the thing that scares me isn’t players leaving so much as wenger failing to replace them. If Man U dont have an experienced player in a certain position, you can 100% guarantee that Fergie will buy a player to plug the hole. With wenger you can never tell what he’s going to do or whether he will go with what he has and always promotes from within. ie we see more of Denilson, Song and Diaby.
I dont have a problem with these players but we are not going to win a title with that philosophy. this isn’t 1995 anymore, things have got tougher.

  13. looking forward in particular to see fabianski in action. will at least add a lot more interest to the end of the season.

  14. Wohoh ladies and gentlemen,
Have you noted that many articles on most website do not give readers a chance to write anything all? This is an exception and love it.

If anyone wants to leave, do this: Block his move and bench him. Flamini is a sneaky b…… who always refuse to sign uyntil its too late and leave for free. However, Song might be a ready made replacement. He did well in ACN until he got injured which coincided with Cameroon poor performance in Final.

Hleb will go nowhere and that twat should know it. We need strengthening defence and Wenger sauid so but maybe he does’nt want to unsettle people hence he keeps mum

  15. Would hate to see Hleb leave, but have long wondered whether the punishment he gets every week is just too much to take for a skill player. You can see it in his face now every week. He gets visciously hacked at least 2-3 times per game, and there is hardly ever even a yellow card pulled.
He actually mentioned his frustration with the officials the other day regarding the fairness of all calls — that the team didn’t have a chance. Certainly you see that in his face every game now, too.
Given what happened to Dudu, Hleb might well have decided that the constant punishment and lack of protection — not to mention the long term risk — isn’t worth it.
On Saturday I couldn’t help but wonder if that slap was a guy who intends to leave anyway just doing a Zidane.

  16. anyone having highlights of jack wilshere plzzz post the link…am really interested to see wat special this kid carries.

hleb has to stay….how does he even think he goes to any other team except the epl clubs, and have a chance of winning the champ league…..i mean its very apparent tht next season also epl clubs will dominate the UCL like this year.

to us its very important that he and CESC stay. flamini i am not sure abt him tho. i think he has to make a decision on this himself….and he is finding it tough no doubt….i mean he can go to juve and play longer more seasons than he wud with us….without winning a thing…else play with us and win something….i really dont care much…..song is gud enf for me for his role.

theo…he is amazing no doubt…..but his ball skills are’nt the most wonderfull…..control yes…but what happens after 2-3 years…when he is bound to lose his pace….his skills will come to help him….to my mind arsene is absolutely correct to push him to improve on that front and think less about his ominous pace which he already has…..his pace will come down for sure…..he has to work harder…..i hope he gets this into his head.

for me the summer is the most crucial period for us in deciding next season’s fate for us. If most of the players stick together…with few more quality players added….we will be invincibles again…..else…..i fear the worst….not winning anything next season(at least one of UCL and BPL) will be hard to take.

  17. scoring goals shudnt be expected of hleb particularly when he is being played out of his natural position most of times…and even more so the absence of predatory strikers who open up the center to allow hleb a glimpse of goal to shoot at…or the non existance of real wingers….who just keep the wing backs busy all the time…to allow others space and time……how can he do it all by himself??

bring in the rite players for wings…we shall see the best of hleb and cesc.

  18. I agree with all you guys who have already called it – Jack Wilshere does indeed look a special player.

But patience will be a virtue, the kid is only just 16, so give him a chance! :-)

Barazite is more likely to get a run in the CC next season, he is a little older.

Lets wait and see on Flamini – his agents are clearly trying to get the most money possible for the guy – and if he feels he will have a better career at Juve – then let him go.

Remember, he has only been a top performer for us for one season, that doesnt give him the right to be top earner at the club when players like Cesc have been doing it for 3-4 seasons now.

If he goes, Arsene will replace him, no doubt.

And hopefully we will get a decent CH in the summer too.

Djorou is a good player – but not good enough to be a commanding CH.

  19. Flint

I’m saying that if Arsene don’t win anything in the coming season then his achievement becomes no better than GG. GG also did a lot albeit made some mistakes at the end.

If you’re leading the pack in January and you have poor defence and have a striker still on the treatment table and don’t know when he’s coming back; then you should listen to advice and fix the problem.

Of course it depends on what your interest is, whether you want to play just good football or your ambition is to bring the title home.

Next year? When we had all the chances to lift the title leading with 5 points and 9 games to go; you blow it and say next year? Well, the other clubs will be sitting there and folding their arms.

We blew the chance to stop the the drought all because of one man’s decision not to bring reinforcements to correct the weakness of the team.

I know him, he cares more about his players than bring in any to push up for the title.

Hear him! What message to I send to my players if I bring in a new player? arethe players more important than Arsenal?

The result is the failure to take the best chance to lift the title after a couple of years.

  20. Flint

We’re building a team? So how long will we stay in transition? Are the other clubs, MANU, CHELSEA, POOL and even the scums down there waiting for us?

Sir Alex saw the weakness in his team and strengthened it; he is now reaping the result.

For Arsene when confronted with a CB problem in January, he only recalled not-good-enough Djourou from Birmingham.

So every year Arsene does what he wants and every year its next year. Are we now the Liverpool of London or are we copying Spurs?

    Next year and the next?

  21. For me, Hleb is the most subtle, magical player, an essential part of the team we are building. Though he knows how much Wenger wants to keep him, I fear he could go, not to win more trophies but to escape the downside of playing in England.

Wenger has said more than once that he usually appears in the dressing-room at halftime black and blue and bleeding from the attention of the Premiership thugs. Was the slap in the face his parting gesture to the likes of Martin Taylor, his revenge? As someone has mentioned, Eduardo’s injury may have been the last straw that helped him make up his mind. Second, he has had a lot of stick from our fans – shame on all those who have booed him. Though he gets ecstatic write-ups in the posher papers – Martin Samuels in The Times writes admiringly about him week in and week out – you can’t blame him for wanting to play where he’ll be better appreciated by the supporters. Third – this could be the decisive thing – he is best mates with Flam.

What to make of Gilberto’s remark about Arsenal wanting players who get on well together? Sounds like a comment on poor Bendtner to me. I’ve never seen a player so blatantly loathed by his teammates. Surely he’ll have to ask for a transfer?

  22. Howard,

I am perplexed by your comments.

    What do you want ?

After Arsenal won the title in 2004 with the invincibles, Chelsea further strengthened their squad with and outlay of £177 million.

Manchester United after winning the title in 2007, further strengthened their squad with an outlay of £68 million.

On this basis, third place means that we are better than the rest.

Are you suggesting that given this massive investment by Chelsea and Manchester United Arsenal should finish above them ?

Or perhaps you are suggesting that Arsenal should invest ? Er… this is after a £375 million outlay on a stadium.

Ok… they have said that there is money for players. Let us not kid ourselves. To strengthen the squad to the extent that we would have internationals in every position would cost an additional £100 million. Wenger and probably the board of directors are not going to do this. a) It is risky, b) we have a mortgage, c) we have young players who can potentially can fill these positions anyway.

Your last comments are fatuous. We are in the situation we are in because of an obscene Russian and a club that chooses live with a debt of half a billion pounds. It is actually praiseworthy that Arsenal are only a matter of 4 points behind the russian team given their immense resources, not a reason for condemnation.

Yes. I am frustrated by the lack of trophies but any comparison with GG and his side brings me shaking my head at from memories of being consistently outplayed in europe by teams of far superior technical ability.

  23. i think i ve said it all too many times…any more comments wud just be a repetition.

keep hleb…and CESC….dont care abt flam…bring one striker(owen wud be the most ideal IMHO), one proper goal scoring winger (rite..since vela is playing on left next season)….
and one mmmmmmonster CB….who knows how to avoid injuries….

(someone plz post the link for jack wilshere vid…)

  24. Mia

Nik loathed by his colleagues? Where did you get this information and what has he done to merit that?

He’s had only few starts and has scored goals both in the CL and EPL. He won the game against the Spurs for us and saved us a point against Villa after Senderos has given Villa a gift goal.

He’s scored more goals at 19 in his first season than Ade who scored less than 5 goals in his first season even though he had more starts; so what are you talking about?

Aren’t you the one who rather loathe him? When was the last time you went to the Colney complex?

  25. Hleb has clearly become more openly frustrated this season. I never used to see him express such open frustration and anger on the pitch as I have this season. He’s been on the receiving end of some of the worst challenges in the PL this season. Recently he made comments to the press about how in England defenders feel they can do pretty much anything they want because they know referees won’t punish them.

If Hleb does leave, I think it will be because he’s had it with the PL. He is an exceptionally creative talent that too many gooners and others in England do not appreciate. He is a very unique playmaker, thank goodness there is a writer like Martin Samuel who can see this. It is no accident that the Italian and Spanish top flight want him.

Regarding our failures this season: please remember that last season we finished FOURTH! I think it’s extraordinarily optimistic and a bit arrogant to believe that we can go from 4th in one season to 1st the very next one. How often does that happen?

Certainly AW believed it once he saw the team doing so well, it’s why he forgot all about the CC and FA cup. Some gooners say he shouldn’t have given up on those domestic cups but if he had prioritized them, he couldn’t have focused as much on the two most important trophies. He would then have been criticized for not mounting a sustained campaign for the league and CL.

We are currently third–better than everyone else except the two richest clubs in the world, or the two with the biggest financial clout in the transfer market. To say that this team is average beggars belief.

And according to http://www.rightresult.net, we should actually be in 2nd place in the league, not 3rd.

  26. Howard, did you even watch the Reading game?

Last Saturday, he was soundly barracked by his teammates during a set piece. At one point he chose to pass to Cesc instead of Hleb–his choice was met by disapproval. When Nick scores, his teammates do not embrace him.

His teammates’ attitude toward him is very obvious for gooners who attend the games and report on what they’ve witnessed–and to any viewer watching how he’s treated when he plays. He is not popular among his teammates, that is very very obvious.

  27. Gilberto is finihed as a premiership player.Dont even compare him with Flamini. The Flamster has proved himself over the whole season
Helb will go to Inter.A deal was done the day before we played AC

  28. Phil

When you’re leading the pack in January and you have a problem with your central defence what do you do? More so when you want to win the league? Do you fix the problem by buying a defender better than what you have or maintain the current crop who are not good enough as a support base?

Did Arsene improve the defence in January by recalling Djourou? Could Djourou improve the defence even without his injury? Didn’t Arsene know Senderos enough to ascertain that Gallas can not be relieved properly by either Senderos or Djourou?

Especially when you have an ambition and opportunity for the first time after some couple of years to lift the title when your main competitors are faltering?

    I rest my case.

  29. It’s official, Hleb has been charged with violent conduct. Saturday was his last game for us.

  30. I actually think Hleb and Flamini are replaceable.

Hleb is a fantastic and skilful player, who suits perfectly our style of play. But i do think there are other players out there who could do the same job. Even someone like Yossi Benayoun at Liverpool would be able to do Hlebs job.

Ditto Flamini. If he wants to go then sell him. Move on.

The most important thing is to strengthen the squad for next year. Of course Wenger wants the current players to stay. but if they dont have the fight for our cause then thye can go. Bye Bye.

  31. The big problem is if Flamini,Helb and Ade do go we are again a selling club that cannot keep its best players. And how long will Cesc stay if that happens.
We have sellouts of 60,000 every game where is all the bloody money going? not on transfers

  32. Howard,

    >When you’re leading the pack in January and >you have a problem with your central defence >what do you do?”

At this point we didn’t have a problem with our central defence. Senderos was recalled and we were doing well.

    >Do you fix the problem by buying a defender >better than what you have or maintain the >current crop who are not good enough as a >support base?”

At this point, it was Arsene’s judgement that the current crop were good enough.

    >Did Arsene improve the defence in January by >recalling Djourou? Could Djourou improve the >defence even without his injury?”

At this point Arsene thought so.

    >Especially when you have an ambition and >opportunity for the first time after some couple >of years to lift the title when your main >competitors are faltering?

If it’s so blindingly simple an obvious as say, spending £8 million to shore up the defence with an experienced defender then Arsene would have done it n’est ce pas ?

I don’t know about you, but I know sweet fa about football management. I used to play sunday league football and I was good in goal. That’s the extend of my football knowledge.

Picking holes in Arsenes decision making is wonderfully simple in hindsight. Trouble is, when it comes to say, sourcing talent from around the world, playing a brand a football that makes even the pundits purr, and yes, transforming Arsenal into a top 10 club in europe, must have been a lot harder than deciding whether or not to punt £8 million on a defender at Xmas ? Non ?

At the risk of sounding patronizing, Arsene doesn’t do the ‘obvious’. Punters come on here and blog about this player who is worth X, and we’ve got to sign that player who is worth Y. On who’s criteria ? Ronaldiniho is supposedly worth £50 million. Can anybody tell me that signing him for that amount will give us a commensurate payback in terms of league position, more so, than say, Sagna or Eduardo. Personally, I’d never heard of Sagna, or Eduardo, and I bet when the dust settles this year, at the close of the transfer market, Wenger will sign two unknowns from the middle of nowhere, and we’d have all wasted the whole summer speculating about overbloated players who end up at Liverpool and Chelsea.

  33. Any luck with the reserves video from last night? I’ve scoured the blogs to the limit of my patience and mental health. Both are starting to give way, but still no video.

I think I’ll stop looking, that way I can stay objective to the hype.

  34. Phil

well thought out and well written.

When all the waffle is said and done, this is in fact our reality, some are excepting of this, some are happy to play fantasy football.

  35. Don,

Lets see if Hleb goes to inter shall we?

Your comments are silly, unless you are Hleb, his agent, or on the board at Inter, then you dont know if he is going there, so dont post silly comments like that.

  36. Al,

You can watch it at Arsenal TV online, but you have to pay.

Im not sure if and when it gets posted anywhere free.

  37. I would hate to see Hleb leave but such is the times in football that it is increasingly difficult to hold on to players. The ruling that players having plied their trade at a club for 2-3 years (I think it may be 3 year) can then buy out their remaining years is in a sense a Bosman type of situation. I noticed that United tied up more player contracts and you can expect other clubs to do so with valued personal because the early buy out does not provide stability to the club.

I want to see some changes with the season almost over, including Walcott handed starts for the remaining 3 games. There is little doubt that is has improved and pushing him back in to the shadows well only undermine the recent advances he has made.

  38. Losing Hleb would be a big blow but I have a feeling Modric will come in if he goes.

I agree with earlier posts about his visible frustration this season & he`s never completely won over all the fans despite his obvious talent.

Much as I like Flamini for his attitude & passion I believe he would be easier to replace, maybe even from within the squad now (Song, Denilson) than Hleb.

Bendtner is clearly unpopular & certainly doesn`t get on with Ade who is very popular. Maybe you can`t be Ade`s mate & Nik`s – either way it`s not good for the side & I expect one to go this summer.

Strangely enough I can`t decide who I`d prefer to leave as I feel Nik B has potential to be a big player for us in a couple of years.

  39. I think the team needs strengthening with three or 4 quality players.Players who have been playing top flight for at leats 2-3 seasons, players who have played in euro competitions, uefa cup or something like that.

Defence- wenegr needs to buy a central defender who can play at the top level and test the best playing option between that defender and gallas or toure .This will give much needed depth in defence.
He should move Eboue back to be a reserve right back and right midfielder to provide depth again on right defence and promote Traore to come through. I beleive he has the qualities to command left back and should be played more to rest Clichy and provide depth.

Midfield- he needs to buy a box to box midfielder who can pass , defend midfield and go forward. This guy has to be a dynamo to provide cover for Fabregas and Flamini.Diaby should get more starts to provide cover for central midfield.

Left /right sided attacking midfileder. This is a must buy for wenger .The team showed lack of width this season and sometimes width could have won us the much needed points when we had too many draws.

A proven striker who can finish and win games single handedly. This can be David villa , Berbatov , Sergio Aguero .Am pretty sure with these 4 additions Arsenal would be unstoppable.

He should sell off Senderos , Gilberto and Hoyte ,and maybe Lehmann if he thinks of bringing in another goalkeeper

  40. It’s a shame if Flamini goes and I’m sure he will. He should have been rewarded with a long-term contract following his brilliant stint at left-back. I reckon AW regrets that now. That’s one that got away but apart from Edu I can’t think of too many others. Man U lost Van Nis and Beckham when they still had plenty to offer. I guess it happens to all teams.

At least defensive midfielder is one of the easier positions to replace.

  41. Hasn’t hleb got a contract? Why do Arsenal allow players to go anytime they want?

Just put a price tag on him and any club with that kind of money can come for him. Arsenal never fights to keep her players. Why?

Spurs refused to let Berbatov leave and he’s still there scoring goals for them same as Ronaldo.

We let Sol Campbell, Cole, Reyes leave at their own wish even though they were contracted.

We should keep Hleb even if he wants to leave as his contract still has some years to run. That’s what most clubs do they just don’t give in to players’ blackmail.

I do not have a problem with Flamini’s contract. He’s demanding too much money over and above what Cesc takes and he’s replaceable so he can leave.

  42. Howard, Hleb has a contract but because of the new Webster rule, Wenger can’t force him to stay. This article in the Guardian explains why:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/apr/22/premierleague.arsenal

“Wenger, whose top priority this summer is to keep his existing squad together, has deeper fears about the future direction of Article 17. ‘The situation at the moment has become much more unstable with the Webster clause,’ he said. ‘Every new rule provokes a little bit more inflation and instability because the players can always move out earlier and quicker.’

‘It was 28 two years ago, if they want [to invoke Article 17], but I’m not convinced that rule will resist for a long time. One day, a 26-year-old will go to court and say it’s age discrimination. Why can you move out at 28 and not 26 after two years?.’

‘For a club like ours, which is going for a youth-team policy, this rule is very detrimental. We educate them and then they could leave at some stage when they get mature. This rule is not good and we live in a world where it is also an incitement to inflation because you are always having to look at their contracts. Stability inside the club is a big problem because that problem is a huge inflation factor.’

Wenger cited the case of Alexander Hleb, the 26-year-old midfielder he signed for £11.2m in July 2005, on a five-year contract. Wenger was upset to learn that Hleb was in Milan last month with an agent who brokers deals for Internazionale.

‘Before, when you had a player under contract for five years, they were your player for five years; now, they can leave after three years [if they are] under the age of 28,’ said Wenger. ‘You are always confronted with potential instability. Players are admired all over the word, they are tapped up, agents get nervous and they see if they can do a deal.’”

  43. Howard, I love the way you talk like you know exactly what’s going on with all the players and their contracts.

Hleb is coming to the age where he can buy out his contract whether Arsene wants to keep him or not. If he leaves I suspect it will have more to do with the fact that referees here do not protect the ‘flair’ players and allow the thugs to reign to the extent that an injury like Eduardo’s is excused as the victims fault for being too fast and skillful. Hleb gets some of the worst treatment and obvious penalties against him are not given. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s seriously ticked off by all of that.

As for Bendtner, I wish people woud stop looking for a problem that isn’t there and stop using it as another stick to beat Ade with. Bendtner does not have to be popular to play in the team and if he is not popular maybe that is down to him. But, he doesn’t just ‘like’ being at Arsenal, to quote the player himself he ‘bloody loves it’. Doesn’t sound like someone who is unhappy and I’ve seen pictures of him in training on Arsenal.com and in the Arsenal magazine in which he seems to be having as much fun as everyone else.

  44. Passenal, I sincerely hope you’re right about Bendtner. I want him to stay. It just seems to me that his teammates treat him as an outsider on the pitch, which I don’t like to see.

  45. NYmarcus, we have no way of knowing, but Bendtner has never joined in with the team huddle, so maybe he is just not into that kind of thing. But if you think about your own work situation you have different relationships with colleagues you work with and whether you feel close to them or not, you can still work together as long as everyone is professional and does their job.

  46. We have the weakest central defence in the top 4.

    Check

    Pool-Callagher/Skakel
    Chelsea-Terry/Calvalho
    Manu-Ferdinand/Vidic

These partnership are all better than Gallas/Toure

Pool quickly replaced the other guy from the Nordic country (can’t remember his name) who used to partner Callagher with Skakel immediately he fell sick. But what did we see, when Arsene lost Toure, he brought in Djourou from his loan spell in Birmingham City. Even at Birmingham, Djourou was playing poorly and eventually got injured.

If only we had a better central defence; the title will be ours and we’ll be playing in the semi-finals of the CL.

    So who’s fault?

  47. It’s my fault Howard

  48. You forgot to mention that one of each couple you mentioned is an ENGLISH player?

How did you miss that? :)

  49. [...] Don’t Leave Me This Way Whilst the next line of the song might be ‘I can’t survive’, there is little doubt that Arsenal can should there [...] [...]

  50. hleb is lookin like leavin too…wat the hell.
why doesnt wenger negotiate with him another 3 year deal now….y odesnt he take steps to ensure his best players remain at the club….why doesnt he do all this instead of brooding at how it will affect our youth policies and all those stuff….i mean yes it does …but still u got to take steps to kep ur best players…..

    too much idealistic….too frustrating.

  51. with hleb and flamini gone…we can only only hope cesc wont go….but he will follow suit…if both of them go.

  52. Against all Odds…

I think it all comes down to the fact that if a player is thinking of leaving or doubt his future with the club, then he is not a committed player. See when and if you sign for Arsenal based only on money (like most other clubs) then money can persuade you to stay.

I see it at Arsenal that players mostly sign on many different reasons not just the money aspect or prospect only. Thierry Henry could’ve made more millions if he wanted to leave Arsenal, but he didn’t. Bergkamp could’ve made more millions if he wanted to leave but he didn’t. Viera could’ve made more millions if he wanted to leave Arsenal, but he didn’t. They left only when it was time for them to open room for someone to continue the legacy……You’re not always going to be lucky and get those kind of committed players, but you got to look hard for them.

I may be living in La La Arsenal Land to think this way, but I see my support for Arsenal in a very different way. I support Arsenal because it’s not all about money, I don’t really think it ever was at Arsenal…I maybe wrong on this but I will take my chances. It was always about the desire of the players we sign to be a part of the club’s legacy while creating their own. I know this kind of philosophy sometimes will not get you any where in the age of Money or Money Era…whatever you want to call it. It’s like having to win against all odds……

It makes all the difference when we do it, and we will.

    G4E

  53. Wonderful post, YW. Seriously sensible perspective, and a very positive contribution.
