Arsene’s team talks will have been something along the lines of ‘a repeat of the first half performances in both games’ for this lunchtimes meeting with relegation threatened Reading. At the start of the season when you look at the fixtures in the run-in, it is one that would have been identified as a home win with Reading being in mid to low placings in the table but probably clear of the dogfight. Well, they are not which will require the team that plays today to put in a great deal of effort. They ran us quite close last season at The Emirates but this time around, there will be a definite edge to their game.
Reading have nothing to lose from being vanquished and a lot to gain from any favourable result because this will have been identified as a match where a point is a bonus. Steve Coppell has noted his problem as few, if any, of his team have experience of a relegation scrap. That they are in marginally better recent form than Arsenal says how badly our results have been impacting on the league.
Now that the title is gone, it would appear that there is little for Arsenal to play for with Everton’s defeat to Chelsea ensuring another season in the Champions League Qualifiers at least. Victory today and Chelsea are still emminently catchable; defeat and fourth place yet again would be a probability. With that in mind, Arsene will be playing Jens Lehmann ahead of Fabianski. Denilson is the only other returnee so it is pretty much as you were, squad-wise. Whether the line-up will be is another matter.
The visits to Anfield and Old Trafford required a different tactical set-up; we were happy to hit on the break although as it happened, Arsenal dominated both matches for long spells. With Reading they will be sitting back, trying to hit Arsenal on the break. With that in mind, it is perhaps time to revert to a more familiar back four with Toure moving into the centre and Eboue taking the vacant right back berth. In the centre of midfield, it is time to see if Alex Song can replicate his African Cup of Nations form in the Premier League. Gilberto did little wrong at Old Trafford but with his departure this summer seeming an almost certain event, Arsene cannot afford to have too much inexperience as back-up to Flamini, assuming of course, he stays.
All of which would mean Theo Walcott getting a start on the right. It is the sort of match where he should start because Arsenal will have to force the pace and require some width. Putting he and Hleb on the flanks might give some urgency to the play in those areas of the pitch. The other thing to bear in mind is the interchangibility that Hleb and van Persie have with either comfortable enough on the ball to take the centre or wide positions. The difference is that RvP’s shooting boots are still finding their aim and dear old Alex, well, he has just got to find his shooting boots again.
Hopefully Arsene will have picked himself off the floor to motivate the team back to winning ways. A line-up has follows would not go amiss in my book but whether Arsene agrees is another matter entirely,
Lehmann; Eboue, Toure, Gallas, Clichy; Walcott, Fabregas, Song (Arsene will put Gilberto in), Hleb; van Persie, Adebayor
With a bench of
Fabianski, Traore, Senderos, Gilberto (Song),Bendtner
To be honest, I will be somewhat disappointed if Eboue and Gilberto start today. I do not mean any disrespect to either but now is the time where next season’s European adventure is confirmed and we should be trying to increase the experience of the squad. Four games may not seem like much but there are four teams who need something from the matches so will fight; better experience than pre-season friendlies. It is the same with Lehmann although perhaps it is time to bury the hatchet (preferably not in Almunia’s back) for what might well be his final Emirates appearance. It is a shame his Arsenal career is ending amid rancour and bad press. Time to remember the good times and a performance that rolls back a season or two.
Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

i think walcott should play upfront in the next few matches… hopefully that will be his position next season. adebayor has played alot this yeah so maybe he should get a break

Excellent preview Yogi, i totally agree with giving Alex Song the chance to show what he is about with Gilberto’s pending departure.
I also would have liked Fabianski to play in goal as there is no point playing Jens.
Eboue playing right back i suppose is the only option open to Arsene, and Theo to be given a start is essential. He deserves it and will start on the wing but will move into the middle if things are not working out.
Whatever the team please can we WIN, it seems an eternity ago we had that pleasure
COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

let’s hope we have less of the passing to the box and shooting is done instead. Cut out the slow dance when confronted by two defenders and pass.
Play-that’s why Mu are so successful- to win and not entertanining/stylish soccer.
Sooner or later stylish soccer gets you where but you get mugged. Brazil is good example. The brazilians would have more WC if not for their showboating. I

agreed. if we were still in the title race then Gilberto would be in my team but experience for next year is vital so Song would get the nod in midfield. as you say, go back to the tried and tested defensive partnership.
I am a great beleiver in bringing in youth to midfield and up front but I never think its good to play around with the defence until you are sure about each of the players in the back 4. one mistake and you concede a goal, and probably lose a game.
I agree with Yogi’s team above but also agree that wenger will use Gilberto.
I hope walcott gets 90.

Wenger wants to win, which is why he will start with the experienced players. The younger players may come on later, but I’d be very surprised if he started with them – hence Lehmann in for Almunia rather than Fabianski. I also expect to see an appearance by Bendtner and Denilson at some point in the game.

We should go for the jugular and then bring on the supersubs.
Id go with…
Mad Jens
Eboue Kolo Gallas Clichy
Hleb Gilberto Cesc Diaby
Van P Ade

We may well see some fringe players today.
We want 2nd but it is more likely that cannot be achieved & 4th place is already assured.
I would like to see see Bentner & Walcott up front with maybe 2 starters from Song,Djourou, Denilson & Traore (as LM). There could even be a completely new face as sub.
It is a rare opportunity to have 4 games to try out another system & players.

no point going for jens really…
i think its only gud if walcott starts…..he needs to adapt himself to playing 90 mins…and he can try iff he gets 90 mins….i think he is gonna start today upfront. my team:
fabianski
toure-song-gallas-clichy
eboue-denilson-fabregas-hleb
RVP-walcott
Ade,jens,gilberto,bendtner on bench

He is right, next season starts now. Keeping Flamini is an imperative, given the close relations he enjoys with Fabregas and Helb… Hopefully Wenger sees it.
Your view on the wage structure? The two quality signings that Wenger suggests, we must get, considering how the others will be beefing up their squad as well.

With fourth place secure we can afford to experiment and get a clearer idea of how next season might look. I’d particularly like to see how Cesc works with Song and whether Traore in left midfield in front of Clichy and behind Walcott – imagine that pace! – would be a good option.
I’m not that optimistic about Flamini signing by the end of the month. Though I think he does want to stay, money looks to be his main motivation, and if he goes, Hleb might well be tempted to join him. That makes it essential to look at those positions straight away, so we have a clearer idea about what we need.
On a more positive note, I’ve never known Wenger so bullish about new signings. What’s got into him? Last year he said he didn’t need anyone (but in fact brought in three). Now he’s saying on the website he wants not one but TWO quality players! I reckon one will be an attacking midfielder, possibly Modric; the other could be a striker but will depend on whether we lose Flamini and/or Hleb. Don’t see much hope of a central defender alas.

Finally Eboue gets dropped & Theo comes in. Song keeps his place
Actually Mia, Wenger is repeating exactly what he said this time year. He said he would bring in World Class players this time last year, this year his wording is Quality.
Don’t expect big names though, he brought in Eduardo, Sagna and Diarra who were not well known although you can’t argue that all three were definately quality players, I will trust Wenger on who he chooses
Should be an interesting summer.
As for today, the pressure is well and truly off, I fancy a high scoring home win.
As for Flamini, I still think he will stay, however he leaves for Financial reasons then more fool him because ask Henry and Vieira etc, the grass is not greener

Great Performance 1st half
I know its Reading but you have to beat what is in front of you and the sharpness is definately on show
I thought Van Persie has been imense, and I hope he scores the goal he deserves.
Keep it up though Arsenal, if we have dreams of getting 2nd it may come down to goal difference so today is crucial for getting as many as possible

good morale and confidence building performance
only criticism can be that we only got 2, when it could easily have been 5 or 6
Thought RVP was MOTM, he is definately getting back to full match sharpeness and only a bar and post stopped him getting on the score sheet. also thought Cesc looked busy and maybe he should be Captain next year, Theo looked dangerous and deserves his place, Clichy was good, Bendtner looked ok when he came on (although it is obvious no one likes him) and Eboue looks a lot happier at RB and I think we should hold on to him as backup to Sagna.
Finally great touch and finish by Ade, I know he can be frustrating but he is getting better and his goal tally does not lie
Big week now, time to sort out Flamini me thinks

This match tells what our problems are;
1. poor finishing ability
2. Defending
Song did very well and can lift up his game if he gets more chances. Howver, I still think he’s rather a defensive midfielder other than a CB. Song is very good in the air but for his height andbody mass. He’s very comfortable with the ball and competitive. If Arsene gives him role in the remaining matches, it will go a long way to boost his confidence and perhaps push him into the first XI next season. He’s proving to be a potential.
Its also clear that we can’t soley rely on Gallas; not on top of his game. Gallas lost concentration a number of occassions but for Song and Clichy.
So we need a big, stronger and pacy CB in the mould of Sol Campbell. We also need another striker to complement Ade and RvP. With Vela coming, the wing problem will be solved especially as Theo Walcott continues to improve his game.

Though our finishing remains a worry, I’m quite glad we didn’t score 10 and exacerbate Reading’s terrible goal difference. It’s always nice to have a team who lets us showboat and win comfortably! Fingers crossed they’ll stay up and send Bolton and Birmingham down.
Something that strikes me about our recent games is that Wenger may be trying to decide about who’ll be cover at right back – Toure, Eboue or Hoyte. If so, good, because it suggests Eboue’s future with us isn’t secure. I thought Hoyte did OK in his brief sub appearance last week so it’s a shame he was injured today. He’s a nice hardworking lad, and I’d be pleased if Wenger believed he was still improving enough to be worth keeping one more year.
Patthegooner, I agree Flam would be insane to move, but I can’t see the Board giving in to blackmail and paying him the stupid wages he’s demanding. Good wages, yes; 20 million, no – or they’ll all be trying it on. Thank goodness for the April deadline, otherwise he’d play cat and mouse with us all summer. It also means that by not signing he’ll be taking a massive financial risk. I mean, it’s one thing to threaten us with Juve and Inter; quite another to get them to commit themselves to his demands before the end of this month. Looked at that way, you could be right, he won’t risk it.
I didn’t see the game but the radio said Bendtner was selfish and got told off by van Persie? True? If so, that’s another teammate he’s rubbed up the wrong way, in addition to Cesc, Hleb, Ade and Flam!

A good solid performance all round & just glad to get a win. Hopefully we can win the last 3 games now & finish strongly.
Song had another sound game & RVP seemed back up to speed. I was pleased with the crowd reaction throughout – keep the faith !

Mis, to answer your questions Bendtner wasn’t selfish he tried to play in Walcott instead of Van Persie and that annoyed VP. He also had a go at Walcott when he didn’t play him in earlier too. That’s just his way. I don’t think he’s been rubbed up the wrong way.

song is the potential replacement for flamini shud he leave(if he does he really will miss arsenal more than arsenal will miss him)..
i thot rvp was gud…and clichy just keeps putting in those near motm performances everytime.
bendtner lacks quality to play for us. theo looked okay….sometimes bustling out of his skin b4 he got past defenders…but he will learn and i am 100 percent sure we will c more “brilliant” goals and assists than a guranteed 15 goals a season. …flashes of brilliance till he learns to slow down.
gilberto sad tht he mite be leaving…but i really think he is going to stay…a hunch mayb but….hope he stays…
hleb is staying i am sure now…and we need to keep him more than flamini…..he is class.
vela, mayb bothello..
one proper predatory muscular striker of berba mould…and a giant of a CB will make us the team to beat next season.

I wouldn’t be too confident of one of the quality signings being a giant CB. Wenger doesn’t do experienced, expensive defenders. Who has he signed apart from Sol (free) and Gallas (a swap)?
The only possibility I’ve heard of is Zapata, who is certainly a giant, though, unless he’s near the end of his contract, he would cost. He’s very young but, since he has been first choice for Udinese for four years, it’s certainly possible he’s coming to the end of his initial contract with them and is wanting a move. Otherwise it’s odd that he’s been linked to us, given our reputation for getting central defenders for nothing. I reckon he’d be delighted to come here. He’s black, and life for black players in north-east Italy (where Romanians are referred to as ‘Africans’) can’t be easy.
I don’t see Senderos leaving, though. I think Wenger likes him. And I suspect the bulk of the transfer money will go on a midfielder, with perhaps a bargain striker if Bendtner is on his way out. Berbatov is leaving but I can’t imagine he’s in our price range.

Well whatever it is we need a CB and a striker. A better CB than we have; all our CB’s are nothing to write home about. We need a big one who can rotate with either Toure or Gallas. Someone in the mould of Sol Campbell.
We also need a striker, a good finisher and someone capable of shooting from outside the 18 as Ade is incapable of doing that. RvP has that capability but don’t think he can stay on his feet to play 15 matches on a row without injury. Eduardo is going to be away for a long time so we need a striker.
We have a lot of midfielders already and there are 2/3 coming through from the youth set up as well so midfield problem is not an issue even if Flamster decide to leave, Vela is coming.

As undemanding as Reading were it was fun to watch a game where we weren’t playing at our typical frenetic pace. A deceptively relaxed tempo plays much more in our favour than the frenetic inefficiency that’s plagued our season. Fatigue cost us dearly.
I felt AW should have incorporated Gilberto much more in the scheme of things as he’s always had that ability to cool things down during a game.
Flamini, the great accelerator turboshot us out of the gate but we couldn’t sustain it to the finish line. We really required a change of speed when we were low on bodies & energy. Consciously varying tempo is a skill that the Flamster needs to add to his game and until he does I feel we still need Gilberto (I really hope he doesn’t leave).
Good win for us today. Enjoyed it…

Good point Aman, which is why I don’t understand people saying we should pay Flamini whatever he wants to keep him. He has had one good season so far, but perpiration is no substitute long-term for the tactical awareness which comes with experience. I’m not saying he will not get there, but ‘one swallow does not a make a summer’,

Didn’t see the game but glad we got the 3 points. ManU struggled to draw with Blackburn. I wish they’d lost! The summarry of our season ia a mistake by Wenger. He should have used the money in January. having said that he has produced a good side for us and no point moaning over split milk. We need to go a CB preferably from the premiership, big fast lad. My choice is Wheater from Middborg. We also need an experienced DM and AM. Cesc and Flamini played far too many games. Even with Song as potential midfielder, I believe we still those two. We also need a Striker to assist Ade and I assume that VP is injury prone and so is a half man.

agree passenal….which is also my thots about flamini….he is not indispensible…very energetic…but its madness…trying to get him play out of his skin a whole season…
If he stays..rotate him with song…..if he goes…..plzzzzzzzzzzzz let gilberto stay at any cost…i love that man’s professionalism….we owe him more than this for what he has done for us over years…
Look at Scholes, he is not playing internationals since long…still one of the important members of manu.
