The Weight Of Expectation Is Overruling Patience

A quiet day on the news front but with Chelsea ‘leaking’ to the media that they have a £100m transfer kitty for the coming close season, the price of every player that anyone has said that they want Arsene to buy just increased by 25%. A rapid growth in the number of players linked with the club has occurred with everybody trying to sling around enough mud, hoping that one will prove correct and they can claim the ’scoop’ on the signing.

Last close season, it got to frankly ridiculous levels because Ferguson had done his business by the end of May and Chelsea were not looking to sign that many people. That left only Arsenal and Liverpool as the ‘big’ clubs to link players with. It would be nice if Arsene tidied the incomings within a fortnight of the season finishing having the players back for the pre-season so that the settling in time is minimalised.

The problematic left side of midfield might have a solution in the long term with Armand Traore believing he is the solution,

It’s my position originally in football so I kind of found myself normally in the left wing. I’m starting to enjoy playing there more and more and, yes, it’s better for me

It is mentioned in the article that he might do an ‘Eboue’ and appear there in the first team. If that is the case, I hope he has broad shoulders because the criticism that will come his way is something that does not bear thinking about.

Philippe Senderos‘ father has ‘revealed’ that the Swiss International has been given time off by Arsene to get his head together but that he is phoning home regularly. In his case, it has always been known that he is a confidence player and that particular aspect of his make-up is easily shaken. Whilst I think long-term he will develop into a good player, it is also pretty obvious that he is not going to be given the chance to win people round in the same way that other more illustrious predecessors have done. Essentially his problem is that even when he is playing at the top of his game, he is not going to dislodge either of Gallas or Toure unless they have a dramatic plunge in their form. For the Swiss International, this is not going to help.

People might point out that he has been at the club for long enough to show his worth but that is to easily forget that he has lost at least a season and a half through injury since joining. However, before he is shipped out permanently, I would have thought that there is considerable merit in him joining a team either here or abroad, that is going to play in European competition. That said, the easiest thing in the world for him to do would be to walk into Arsene’s office and ask for a transfer. The last two seasons have been a test of character for him, as well as a steep learning curve. Whether he will take the ‘easy’ way out will speak volumes about him.

For next season, much hype is surrounding the arrival of Carlos Vela at the club after his spells on loan. Undeniably, Vela has done well for his Spanish clubs in the past couple of seasons but it strikes me as there is too much expectation surrounding him. From what I have seen of his Primera Liga games, he is talented but the Premier League is a different kettle of fish. It is more physical and he will need time to adjust. Given the distinct lack of patience being shown with young players – they get perhaps half a season and after that, if they are not world-beaters, there are numerous demands for them to be sold. Had Vela been available this season, who knows, he might have cured the ills of the team by relieving goalscoring pressure on Adebayor. He might not have done and then where would we be.

The same pressure is about to arrive on Walcott’s shoulders. One good run at Anfield and the media question why he is not starting, forgetting that his fresh legs in that match enabled him to outpace defenders and midfielders who might have marginalised him tactically. Let us not forget that it was not so long ago that many were questioning whether Walcott would ever make the grade.

The key to this is that Arsene has a balance to strike. He wants to win trophies. He has a squad that might be on the verge of doing it. He is hamstrung by his own success though; a decade of trophies has raised expectations. Whereas in the past, Arsenal youngsters have been given time, they are now judged by Cesc Fabregas’ standards. If they are not there by the end of their first season, woe betide them from sections of the support. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Every Arsenal fan wants them to win but in an age of quick fixes, it is assumed that these can be filled by spending cash and to hell with the future.

It is a big ‘ask’ after three trophyless seasons but a bit more patience is required before another cycle begins.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Good post yogi, hopefully a few more of these might have an effect on people.

  2. “It would be nice if Arsene tidied the incomings within a fortnight of the season finishing having the players back for the pre-season so that the settling in time is minimalised. “….abs correct

traore for wings….a big no for me

wat strikes abt vela tho….he is tht sort of a guy who will keep pegging away…wil keep trying…not like ade…dropping shoulders and all….much like eduardo…who springs to life wen ball comes to him…not a star yet…but a very good prospect.

i wud like to c another rite winger bought too and let walcott play more in striking positions.

  3. i’m afraid that a lot of the hype surrounding Vela is because he is the best young player on football manager 2008. From what i’ve seen he could be a really good player although still a little raw. I just hope the crushing weight of expectation isn;t too much…

  4. It just shows that even when expectations were managed at the beginning of this season, when the original expectations were exceeded, having come thus far, the goal posts get shifted and only finishing as champions will do. There is simply no such thing as patience in the scheme of things for supporters of AFC.

  5. I work for sky sports and i’ve been keeping tabs on Vela, i’ve seen the odd game here & there… he’s a good little player but don’t expect him to come in and set the premiership on fire…
expect more along the lines of Reyes and with any luck he’ll suprise us.

  6. Well said YW. It’s about time some of the naysaying, doommongering numpties who frequent the interweb started paying attention to articles like this and showing some sense of perspective as opposed to blindly following the partial rantings of the beer addled, semi literate hacks who appear on sky sports news or that journo love-in show on Sunday mornings.

  7. Vela ready but need to put on a few physical pounds for the EPL or no shoulder charging allowed.

  8. I love the way you write about topics exactly the way I think…..

Of course I always beleive what I think is correct so it’s good reading your post which always seems to make perfect sense!!

    Keep up the good work.

  9. What a positive article, and my views echo yours…

We all want us to win trophies, but the way are squad is looking, reserves and youth, that will soon happen and and over a long period of time.
Yes it may be as soon as next season, but we may have to wait for the following one, but when it does happen, the other teams in our league wont know what has hit them – and all with a young team, with an abundance of talent available for the boss.

My only view is that we do next season need to sure up the defence, and need another striker – not because my faith is not with our current crop – but RVP seems to suffer injuries, and Dudu will need ‘time’

    Arsene KNOWS!

  10. It is nice to see a site where people are expressing their views without resorting to mindless abuse.
I am not sure that Kolo’s form could “plunge” much further and not just when he has been stuck at right-back. Both Gallas (with Terry) and Toure (with Campbell) have played all of their best football next to a dominating centre-half and I fear that the combination will never work too well.
Vela is likely to need plenty of time, so let us supporters give him that time.
Spending money is easy but buying the right players isn’t. What worries me is Arsene’s reported comments that we only need one player. We need one player to replace Diarra never mind other areas of the squad. It would surely go against all the evidence to assume that Van Persie and Rosicky will be available for all or even most of next season.

  11. This tops a series of excellent recent posts, YW.

Our biggest problem is this “three trophyless seasons” mentality. It is dangerous & feeds on itself.

There is more to football than that attitude.

I love my club & my football above all else. The joy of winning things is immense but not all that matters. The majority of football supporters never have that experience at our level.

Those who know the game realise we are on the right path. The quick fix is rarely the answer.

  12. Spot on Yogi, but patience is sorely lacking in our modern society it’s all ‘I want it now or I’ll stamp my feet and scream and scream until I’m sick’. I hope Wenger and the team are strong enough not to be taken in by this instant gratification nonsense and stick to their principles. It will bear fruit soon and if not, I trust a winner like Wenger to know when to call it quits.

  13. And lets not forget how difficult it is to win the Premiership – love them of hate them,Man U are a great side, Chelsea have unlimited funds, and the rest are getting stronger all the time.

We are building a team in the right way, with the right style of play, and are so close to something special.

Hopefully Arsene will get the 2 or 3 players in we all can see that we can need.

Im sure he will – if we can all see the need, im sure he can!

  14. You know I was just watching Arsenal V Man U at the Highbury in 1997. That was the turn-around that won Wenger with his first full season in charge the double. You know what stood out the most, besides Adams and Parlour and Vieira. THE CROWD. TRUE GOONERS WHO LOVED THEIR ARSENAL. What happened to us? We have too many shandy drinking boys and not enough of the heart. Let’s bring it back this weekend boys. Let’s show them how much we love them, how much we love our manager. C’mon Gooners, lets take it back…

  15. From a distance Senderos seems like a top bloke. I feel sure Wenger keeps him in the picture because he’s a good ‘dressing room’ player. From the outside it’s impossible to know how influential a person like Senderos is BUT bottom line is, as everybody knows, he is not and never will be mobile enough. People talk about Bobby Moore and Beckenbauer great readers of the game who didn’t have exceptional pace, great but they would have not been outmanouvered by the Hypias of this world. Nordveit and Djourou may be options but please Arsene, lose the soft spot for Big Phil and sign a commanding CB (Micah Richards would be good but I’m happy for a no-name). Robinho would be outstanding on the wing (continue talks from last year) and a proper No.9 (Villa?) and the rest of the Premier would be very nervous.
p.s. For what it’s worth, when I’ve watched Vela he looks an Arsenal player through and through.

  16. Well Done YW. All I can say is more of you on the web.

    Well Balanced Article!.

PS. I am posting comments too quickly with my first comment? Please can you get Word Press to sort that message out?????????

Also well balanced comments so far so good!

  17. The reason I dont think we, as a club, can afford to be patient to the nth degree, is because players are not patient. If trophies keep failing to come for 4 then 5 years, our best players WILL leave. their careers are short and they are ambitious boys. we probably have 6 or 7 players in that category and all they want is 3 or 4 other quality players next to them to give them the chances to win the title and the CL. My concern is that we will lose our best players, even as early as this summer.
Arsenal are regarded as one of trophy winning clubs of England. players join us to win things. they are not Arsenal fans. Fans might be able to be patient but these players are less likely to be. replacing our best players with ones that are equally as good would cost Arsenal an absolute fortune. More money than we have.
our best players were bought for peanuts and developed here so to lose them now would be a tragedy.
when a team is 90 pr 95% of the way there, you cannot leave the last little part to chance because you will not beat Man U and chelsea, who are two of the strongest clubs in the world.
going into this season I felt we were one or two players short and I dont want to feel like that again come August.

the thing I dislike most about the summer is how late Wenger does his business – sometimes in the last week after all the pre-season training is finished. If only he’d just buy his 2 or 3 players in May. Dont you think that would put a few players minds at rest if they saw that they would be joined by a couple of top players in pre-season training? Then we dont have to put up with the will he wont he stories all summer when Real and Barca come knocking.

  18. and as for Traore. why not give him a go on the wing? no promises that he’ll be better than Eboue but its worth a go. I thought it was worth seeing if Eboue could do it as well. OK after 5 games I realised that it wasn’t working and wouldn’t have played him there again but unfortunately wenger persisted with him.
whenever I have seen Armand play for the reserves he plays better as a winger than as a left back. I feel sure he is more of a winger. if you are saying you dont feel he is a good enough winger then you are saying he is not good enough for Arsenal. I would disagree at this stage. he is young, quick and exciting. he has one hell of a shot on him and a lot of end product in the form of crosses and goals. I say give him a go there (even this season) and lets see how he goes.

  19. I could have never blogged better than this… Top post

  20. Good post YW and good response Stonroy. It is true that our fans have been spoilt by what they have witnessed over the last few years.

Nw we need to retake our club back from these bunch of numpties who call for a players head just because he has a few bad games. Look at Theo, what a star this lad is in the making. He has pace skill an eye for a goal and above all humility and he is only 18! Yet everytime he has a little bit of a bad game people are saying he is shit etc.

These people are twats and should keep their mouths shut or go and do some FA coaching courses to truly understand the game not just sit at home scratching their fat arses play football manager!

  21. Football at the highest level there can be no time for sentiment.Senderos must be judged by his performances on the pitch. And sadly he has been found wanting. We need a commanding centre half to play along side either Toure or Gallas next season.Would fergie keep Swiss Phil. Nope

  22. Fergie kept Wes Orange and he was fucking shite for ages!!

It is ridiculous to judge youngsters by the same values as experienced 26-30 yr olds. Especially in defence!

  23. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/04/17/arsenal-s-kids-needed-experience-says-lauren-89520-20385580/

We should have kept Lauren on for a bit, could have filled right midfield better than Eboue. Bullshit we got £5million for him, it was £500,000 actually.

  24. gazzap

I never passed comment on Traore’s abilities as a winger nor should we until it has happened in the first team. My point is that Eboue was as you said, given ‘5 games’ and then the grief started which is too short a time for players to learn a new position.

    YW

  25. YW, my Traore comments were aimed at gunner4life.
I sort of agree about it taking longer than 5 games to really learn a position but if you are totally out of your depth and its clear its not working then I think you can cut the experiment short before that player loses you 4 trophies.

I have friends who are not Arsenal supporters that look at Eboue and wonder how he can play in the Arsenal midfield. they say he would not even get into their team’s midfield and they support teams like sheffield united, villa and West Ham. he is a right back and thats where he should stay.

  26. Gazzap, be sure that as Arsenal is set up right now, in the next few years, there will be no scarcity of good players so they all just need to learn patience.

This team, is not as bad as people say they are… this squad is not even as bad… They are not big names as people want them to be, but there are growing to be. A number of them are in their first or second season.

I remember when some people were laughing at Man U over Ronaldo with plenty of potential and show boating and not enough end product. He is in his 3rd or 4th season now if I am not mistaken. be sure he was not like this in his first season. If not for Rosicky and Van P’s injuries, they would have been like that for us.

The loss of Reyes also affected us. Nobody can doubt that he had the skill, just could not cope especially after that OT game that ended our unbeaten run. He would have been great on that left wing.

This team will come good, mark my word.

I dreamt that Man U lost 2 or their last 4 games and drew the other 2; Chelsea lost one and drew 3 and we won all and won the league. I liked it very much…

This is my 5th attempt to post this comment

  27. team spirit. we will get injuries next season, be sure of that. the injuries next season might be Cesc, Flam (if he’s here) and Hleb. we cannot predict who will get injured but you can say with almost certainty that players will get injured for a significant amount of the season. Its how you prepare for every eventuality that sets champions apart from the also rans.

If you enter a season with a weak squad at some stage you will come unstuck.

As for Ronaldo being laughed at, that is not true. Everyone could see the quality Ronaldo possessed, sure he needed to cut out some showboating (he still does to a degree) and slightly improve his end product but you had 90% of a world class player there. the extra 10% came later but that didn’t make him useless in his first season.

  28. We dont miss Reyes its Pires we fucking miss.A true world class player who would get 15 goals a season.Who was let go because of Arsene”s over 30 policy.Henry was not the same player after Super Bob left.

  29. u c unless wenger is absolutely sure i dont think he wud play traore in midfield…. reason he wudnt jump to making another mistake like he did on eboue..we all have to agree it was a mistake btw…

i mean last season eboue’s crosses wer awesome….many goals came out of his crosses… (against utd henry header inc).. and we wer all awed at his gr8 “talent”..wenger made the change due to his effectiveness….and he was too stubborn to change it halfway i wud say…

Now to do it all over again with traore seems impossible to me…just c it frm wenger’s pov…this season he has to deliver at least one trophy to win over trusts he has lost in few ppl…. fans = money for the club…..

i dont c traore coming as a regular winger….thts y i said….y shud he wen vela is coming bak?..
and we r buying a striker and CB for sure.

  30. this season = next season
    :D

  31. Personally – i thought Eboue was rubbish as a right back as well, so for me it is not about adjusting to a new position! :-)

Sorry for being negative – but we are all entitled to opinions on players.

You are right on the whole though – People forget that Cesc and Rooney are freaks (in a good way!) – not many teenagers can play at a consistent level in the prem, and it is unfair to compare all young players to them.

On a positive – i think i posted about it in the week – but did anyone see Jack Wilshere play for the reserves on Monday?

The boy has the potential to be a star!

  32. Gazzap I comletely agree with what you are saying about the players getting fed up! If the fans are then the players will as well. They want to win trophies and have not come to Arsenal to be part of Wengers revolution, they have come to Arsenal because Wenger is a sucessful manager and one of the great trainers. They expect to be playing with the best and competing with the best, they believe they are entering a club of the highest footballing pedigree. If they come to question their managers transfer policy and think they might not be winners at the club they will leave!

The players must want to play with the best on the training ground, I remember all the players saying how amazing it was to have Henry on the training ground! This is especially true if you have a team of young players.

I believe we have a core of outstanding potential, but they need further nurturing and they need some established class and experience to learn from, to feel they have a chance against the current list of world beaters. I am sure Fabregas must get enraged when Eboue wastes ball after ball, week after week. Surely he wishes Wenger put someone better out there and if the fans have such views on this so does the team! If the players dont share or believe in the vision they will leave!

  33. wenger obviously didn’t trust eboue as our main right back or he wouldn’t have bought sagna.

totally agree about vela the expectations are too big on him already, i assume he will be a CC player next year.

totally agree with gazzap about the players, they want to win things and their patience is less than ours, for the flam’s and helb’s to be even considering leaving us shows how precarious their positions are at arsenal, both 1st team players, play every game and loved by wenger, but are thinking elsewhere. that’s why trophies whatever one’s they maybe are crucial to keep the players ticking over and the winning mentatlity developing, especially a young side like ours that have yet to win anything.

  34. I think people give Senderos way too much of a hard time.
His record in the first team is pretty impressive.
I swear when he first got into the team they didnt concede a goal for about 10 games or something in the league and got the the champions league final with conceding for ages.
Its true he was poor against liverpool, and his mistakes cost us the game, although not single-handedly mind.
If you remember tho, he was fantastic against milan, and tbh I was pleased when toure went off in the first leg cos he hadnt been playing well and Senderos kept Pato relatively quiet. So we might not have even got there without his influence…maybe
But overall, when he came into the team he was one of our best players for a short while, it was just one poor performance in however many hes played this year. Unfortunately its cost us big, but I dont think we should sell him, I really think he can be a big first-team player for us in the future.

  35. senderos is a good 4th choice, i love his attitude and looks to be a real leader on the pitch which we don’t have many of. the problem is he is not consistant enough to play week in week out and that is what you need if you are going to play regularly which as 3rd choice there is a good chance of happening.

wenger will have a hard decision on the centre back issue as a new top quality centre back means the end of gallas or toure and that is a tough call.

  36. No, senderos is found out almost every time he plays against genuine quality or pace like Drogba, Agbonglahor and Torres. If he has a good game then you know the mistake must be coming in the next game. he cant go more than a few games without making a clumsy mistake. he does not get close enough to his striker. his marking is way below what you would expect for someone at Arsenal.
If Senderos loses us the CL next season and a couple of key prem games, even though he is only our third choice defender, are you going to be so forgiving? at what point do you stop being so leniant towards a player earning £20,000 a week in a top premiership club? he is not some kid but he is making schoolboy errors in hugely important games.
If you want to develop your skills then do it elsewhere, not in the Arsenal first team. I have not seen the improvement in him since the first day he played in the first team. He is the same 4 years later. Thats not what you expect for all that experience. that’s why I am sure he wont improve next season.

with the amount I pay for a ticket I dont like being lenient towards average players because we are not a mid-table club. If we dont win trophies I can accept it as long as we (as a club) have done everything in our power to win trophies. eg. If wenger was to buy a top central defender and then next season he and Toure get injured then you cannot criticise anybody – thats just bad luck and it happens. But relying on Senderos again does not put anybody above critcism when its blindingly clear he is not a top defender.
Honestly some of you guys are too nice and too willing to accept second best. If you want to win, you have to raise standards and strive for the best.

  37. @Peter: I agree, I think in recent weeks Senderos has put in much better performances than Toure, I thought he was hard done by when Wenger dropped him. He may not be mobile enough, but with Gallas, Clichy and Sagna we’ve got one of the fastest defences in the Premiership, and we need some of big Phil’s calm approach. He’s not the man to play in every game, but I’d pick him more often than not and use it to rest Gallas or Toure.

I don’t understand this criticism of Adebayor either, he’s scored plenty of goals this season and has covered more ground in a season than any Arsenal striker this millenium. He may not be Didier Drogba, but he’s close and a real asset to the team – just because he doesn’t wear the right expression people seem to turn against him – personally I’m only interested in how he plays (I seem to remember a French striker we had once who often looked a bit bored).

  38. “expect more along the lines of Reyes and with any luck he’ll suprise us.”

this is a spectacularly uninformed comment. Noone who saw Reyes play could question his quality. So if Vela is as good as Reyes, we have a diamond. Jose’s problem was that he couldnt cope with life abroad, not that he was crap.

we need – One tall centre back & one more creative midfielder.

We dont need: a Centre midfielder – Cesc, Flam, Diaby, Denilson, Song & Rosicky are all specialist CMs

we don’t need another striker – RvP, Ade, bendter, Theo, potentially Vela & Eddie. Is enough.

  39. Although some of the frustration is with the performances of individual players, I think the most annoying aspect of the season is the failure of the club to purchase a couple of good players during January to give support to the squad.

The majority of the first team have exceded expectations, but in the last couple of months have been worn into the ground and mistkes come from tired bodies and minds.

I feel proud of the team, but a bit let down by the management. Even accounting for the injuries, the squad was always going to be light. I would hate for some of the players to consider leaving because they see no improvement with numbers, it is great to play fantastic football from August to February, but the trophies are won in May and we will win no cups if our best players are on their knees by then.

  40. “Our biggest problem is this “three trophyless seasons” mentality. It is dangerous & feeds on itself.”

Why is it that Manchester United can go without a trophy for 3 seasons and not get this kind of media hysteria against them whereas with us it’s as if 3 seasons is the equivalent of 30!

  41. there was media hysteria, they were all after ferguson to leave.

  42. http://www.cityam.com/index.php?news=11752

I am back after the Mediation talks went thru and convinced David Villa to choose Arsenal but Wenger will not buy him. Watch tomorrow’s press conference and he will always shy away from announcing his plans.

This is a case of a player who has told Arsene come and get me. remember sagna’s case………….

  43. dan, I know that Manu fans were after his head, I just don’t remember this level of scolding and glee from the media.

  44. what happened in sagna’s case?

  45. the media raise and knock all clubs that is the nature of their business and what sells newspapers and gets people to call in to talksport!!!! it is better to be talked about than not ie spuds. i just don’t see it as a big deal. just like after we beat milan i ignored them when they said we were the best team in the world and ignore them now when they say we are in crisis.

we are all very capable of making our own conclusions.

  46. To answer Flint’s question about Djourou from yesterday:

Djourou has done all his development in the young national side as a defensive midfielder and he has been impressive in that role. I remember watching him play in the U17 world cup or euro (I don’t remember) in that role and it was very reminiscent of Viera with the way he was bursting forward.

He sees himself more in this role and I think that he will be much better in that role too as he enjoys moving forward, and I suspect that we may see him in that role in the future.

Otherwise, when he played in his first international match against Italy as a CB (just before the WC 2006), he really bluffed everybody. Strong sense of positioning and strong going forward again. Even the Italian media seemed to agree.

Both Big Phil and Djourou enjoy being at Arsenal with Arsene, but they both admit in the local media that they suffer not having a longer run of game, which would better for their confidence.

  47. Grief or no grief, Eboue has shown over an entire season that he is not an effective midfielder. And the current squad has proved to me that they are not quite deep enough to win the Prem. We have the money. The time has come to spend it on a big-time striker and CB.

  48. I have got a lot of time for Djourou. I think I have only ever see him have one half dodgy game for Arsenal and that was because I think he was carrying an injury. Birmingham fans loved him, but unfortunately they sent him back injured. that injury made up wengers mind that JD would not play a big part for Arsenal in the run in. he decided to stick with Senderos and give him a long run.
I rate Djourou above Senderos. I feel that if JD had as much time in the first team as Sendy we would be seeing one hell of a player now.
the fact he can also play in midfield has 2 advantages. 1, you know his close control, passing etc must be spot on if he has been successful in midfield before and 2, he is adaptable in terms of can play in different positions should we get injuries that force us to us him in midfield.

  49. Jesus Christ – Amauri now. We’re being linked with everyone and the summer hasn’t even started yet. This will be the worst so far… It’s going to be a long few months. I’d say we only bid on a tiny fraction of the players we’re linked with in the press.

Most of Wenger’s signings are clandestine affairs with an undisclosed fee – Perhaps his secrecy is the reason for this hysteria? Maybe players know we’re in the market and their agents leak our name to add a couple of Ks to contract demands. Either way it’s tiresome already.

Instead of likely signings, maybe we should have a poll on the silliest transfer speculation.

  50. The silliest transfer speculation so far has nothing to do with us. It has to do with the notion that KAKA and MESSI would consciously CHOOSE to play under the management of AVRAM GRANT!

Compared to that bit of insanity, both players would choose to play under Mourinho (neither player likes his football style) at, say, Man City.

  51. There’s so much contempt for Chelsea across Europe, but money talks. They could conceivably still get anyone they want. That’s a sad thought.

The thought of Kaka and Messi going anywhere else is silly in itself. Besides, any agent driving a hard bargain with Berlusconi can expect a little “accident” coming their way!

  52. I dont think chelsea could get anyone they want. I think they could get anyone that cares more about money than football and to be honest they are welcome to those players – it has not done them many favours recently has it? I sense that even good players who go there are losing the will to live. I am so glad I am not a chelsea fan.

so Den makes a welcome return, probably to the bench as I dont think wenger would risk his hamstrings with 90. Manuel probably wont make it.

    Surely:
    Lehmann
    Eboue Toure Gallas Clichy
    Walcott Cesc Gilberto Hleb
    RVP Ade

Bench: Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner, Senderos (is his head right yet?) Fabianski.

Would love to see Diaby come on for Cesc in midfield if possible at some point. I think he has been dealt a bad hand by wenger constantly being put on the left wing.

  53. I think Diaby is still suspended.

  54. I`ve got no problem with Senderos as 4th choice CB next season. This season Chelsea`s 4th choice is Ben Haim , Manure`s is Pique & Liverpool`s Hypia. None of them are better than Senderos IMO.

We need to finish the season strongly as I can see it having an impact on the early part of next season if we don`t.

I`d also like to see Cesc pick up a small knock / sprain (nothing serious) that keeps him out of the Euros as a; he needs a break & b; 3 or 4 weeks weeks of hearing how great it is at Real & Barca is something we can do without.

  55. YW

This is just for the love of your writing skills. I love it.

Are yu teaching literature ? Have you written a book?

Write a book YW or teach. Your English is up there.

  56. amauri he he…wat the hell….
….it will be another frenchie i tell u….and i hope its another low profile one…without any expectations…..sagna was a superhit.

henry back frm barca wont be bad at all i think….

  57. How about Berbatov..?

It’ll never happen, but tonight the Guardian carries the following quote from his most esteemed agent:

“It is time Dimitar was playing for a club that plays regularly in the Champions League, he wants to win trophies.”

    Beautiful on so many levels!

So to Dimitar, the Carling cup is clearly as insignificant a trophy as it is to Arsene…

  58. Berbatov? I’d be very surprised – I think SAF will go for him as he does not really have a striker – they’ve been over-reliant on goals from a winger this season.

Arsene is probably looking for a replacement for Gilberto (if he goes), a third choice goal-keeper (unless he sticks with Mannone) and/or an experienced defender. He might even try again for that super super class player i.e. Robinho, who he has been after for a few years now.

  59. My fear is that Berba does go to Man United. They’re becoming like the Galacticos, ffs, except much more effective.

  60. He won’t go to utd and play 2nd fiddle to Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez

  61. [...] The Weight Of Expectation Is Overruling Patience A quiet day on the news front but with Chelsea ‘leaking’ to the media that they have a £100m transfer [...] [...]

  62. I will put up some names, just for the sake of it

    Ivan Rakitic,
    Lulinha
    Stevan Jovetic
    Macauley Chirsantus
    Ever Banega

I have done the bit where no one would have heard much about these players. Rest is the quality which is very very good. Also each one of them is under 20 years of age.

So all these are very good guesses.

  63. ck – Sagna was interested in Arsenal before pre – season and Wenger bought him. Same thing wenger should do with Villa.
