Title Charge Ends With Brand New Hope

Manchester United 2 – 1 Arsenal

0 – 1 Adebayor (47)
1 – 1 Ronaldo (54)
2 – 1 Hargreaves (72)

A bitterly disappointing week signalled the end of the trophy hunt for another season. In a match reminiscent of Anfield on Tuesday night, Arsenal played the better football, were the better team, put in the better performance. And lost. For all of the passing and movement, the one final push required was not there.

Yet again though the defeat was of the team’s own doing. Missed chances, good goalkeeping, fortuitous interventions by the woodwork led to lapses in defensive concentration being punished. It is a cliché to say but the line between success and failure at the highest level of football is wafer thin; Arsenal were unable to hold together for long enough to breach that gap this season.

In the midst of all of this though, it should not be forgotten the sea change in the teams performance over the course of the season when compared to the two preceding. And that is the key to gauging how this campaign has panned out. There is obvious disappointment, a common feeling amongst players, staff and supporters.

For me, the most telling aspect was the disappointment that visibly etched over Arsene’s face and body language at the end of ninety minutes to the extent that even Sir Alex Ferguson could be seen attempting to provide words of solace, knowing his team had been outplayed yet still triumphed.

If anyone doubted the character of this squad, the answer was delivered in sixty five minutes of composure and passing that this team has made their trademark. Unfortunately, it was accompanied by their more recent trademark of being unable to finish a game off.

Choosing a Man of the Match is difficult under such circumstances but Alex Hleb would be there or there abouts. Prompting, probing and doing everything but score, he popped up over the pitch to supplement the attacks which seemed to come at will in the first half. Adebayor was set up by all and sundry but whereas three months ago, the chances went in, confidence seems to have eluded him somewhat in front of goal.

As early as the twelfth minute, Eboue broke on the right and his stretched centre ran between two United defenders where Adebayor’s stubbed effort was blocked by Ferdinand. From the resulting corner, Gilberto struck a firm shot toward goal only for it to hit Song although it is doubtful if the effort would have found the back of the net with two defenders behind the Arsenal man.

United were never overwhelmed and probed bring good saves out of Lehmann, Ronaldo and Rooney denied most often. The clearest cut chance of the half though arrived when Hleb slid Adebayor through. His composure in finding the space deserted him when faced with van der Sar, a tame effort curled comfortably too close to the United goalkeeper. A similar finish came seven minutes later when Hleb again found the Togolese international following a good tackle from Gilberto.

The interval’s parity in scoreline did not last long. van Persie slid a freekick to Hleb on the edge of the area and a move seemingly stuttered to a finale with Fabregas’ effort blocked. The Dutchman had other ideas and had followed the ball into the centre, picked it up on the left edge of the area, got past the United defence and curled a cross over. Adebayor handled the ball in but so discreetly that the home players barely raised a murmur. It did not seem deliberate, his hands looked to be protecting his face from a battering that never arrived. A fortuitous finish but nothing like that for a deserved lead.

Minutes later, that could have been doubled as Ferdinand deflected a cross firmly toward his own goal only for van der Sar to save the hosts. Such fine lines between victory and defeat were emphasised when Gallas needlessly handled a Carrick flick on. Ronaldo’s twice taken penalty ended up in the net, in the same corner with Lehmann guessing right both times. Fifteen minutes of feistiness ended with Walcott and Hleb interchanging passes on the right with the England youngsters sliding across for Fabregas to blaze over. A minute later, Hleb sprinted fifty yards before putting a cross field pass to Clichy, whose cross was met by Brown, turned to his own goal where a combination of van der Sar and the post denied Arsenal.

Lady Luck had been flitting between the two dugouts and finally made her choice, pecking Arsene on the cheek and turning her affections towards Ferguson like the brazen hussy she is. Hargreaves capitalised on a Gilberto foul to send a freekick over the wall and into the net. Placement ruled out the wall or Lehmann intervening but why, oh, why was there no defender on that post with the German having to patrol the other side of the goal. Even then, her Ladyship still sent admiring glances in Arsene’s direction, chances created and missed; Bendtner had two headers late on to salvage a point. It did not happen and the Arsenal team headed home empty handed.

Much pride can be taken from the performances. To raise their game from Tuesday’s efforts to produce a performance augurs well for the future. Aside from Hleb, Clichy and Fabregas deserve special praise. The physical endurance that they have is incredible. Their consistency is a testament to their mental attitudes have covered so much ground during the season, to still sparkle when the chips have fallen out the wrapping and splattered in a massive heap is a source of great hope. Lehmann and Gilberto proved life may yet go on the pitch for them post their close season departures. They both rolled back the years yet the Brazilian transforms the dynamic of the team, requiring Fabregas to cover more ground. In both cases, with nothing but pride to play for perhaps the time is now ripe for a youngster to be given a run of four games in their positions.

Defensively, the frailties are still to be solved. Song had a reasonable afternoon considering the circumstances of his introduction. Expected slips were made but perhaps he deserves an outing or two in the heart of the defence because he is luckier that Senderos. One aspect was good to see that the experienced players around him were willing to help through cajoling; Lehmann, Toure, Gallas and Hleb could be seen talking to him throughout the half, peaking in a team meeting on the half hour mark. And what of the Captain? He is being chastised once more for not grabbing the team by the scruff of the neck when pressure was being exerted. Is it his style to do so? That is tough to answer because he certainly talks when it is going well. The media portray this with one example conveniently overlooking instances that contradict their arguments. However, there seems little doubt that the Captain needs working on in certain aspects of his game as any professional does. That does not mean that he should be stripped of the position, perhaps a man-management course might be helpful?

Defeat is hard to take but this instilled pride. There is work to be done on the squad but it was always a Work In Progress this season. A Brand New Hope is flickering. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Didn’t that big lump say he’ll quit football if we don’t win a trophy this season??

Well lets hope it’s bye bye then to that waste of space Adebarndoor

  2. [...] reaction from Goodplaya , Gunnerblog , A Cultured Left Foot and East Lower [...]

  3. youn know even at our invinsible best and in past teams i can never remember us going to anfeild twice old trafford and stamford bridge and playing all 3 teams of the pitch and this while missing 3/4 of our first choice 11 so with a few additions we will be ok,dont believe the one player story last season he said we would sign 2 super super class players and that was when henry was still there i think he knows we need a few but our squad is not that small remember yesterday we were missing sanga, risisky, flamini and eduardo plus fringe players like diaby and denilson(injured) and van persie is only getting back. but the diff between us and pool and utd is simple take yesterday torres gets 1 half chance and goal ade im afraid is shocking in front of goal and between birmingham to liverpool and utd yesterday he has missed some great chances so if had to choose it would be a centre foward imagine if we had eto for the last few months i think we would be top and in the champions league semi

  4. Your post today totally reflects my view YW – can’t say anymore than that.

Surprise, surprise the Ade bashers are out already. He’s not the only person to miss chances yesterday and if it were not for his 25 goals this season, we would not be where we are now. Last time I checked, football was a team game played by 11 players. How you expect 1 man to carry the whole team and hold him personally responsible is beyond me.

  5. Can’t agree more YW…the two main individuals who are resposible for this demise are Ade and Ro-sciky.Adebeyor the luckiest sone of a gun in this world..a disgrace to the strikers this wonderful football club has had.Utter disgrae i siad this when he was scoring goals and i’m sayig this now.Winner of the Iron boot for this season.Any descent striker would have scored that goal..but no use of crying ovr spoilt mik.
Mr.Ro-scikiy a mand of his potential should be there along with Stevie G or Ronaldo for a team , but he chose to become a specimen for thr teams medical team.

I feel gutted, as any gooner would.I would paray that Wenger gives Bendtner a start in matches he will make all of us feel proud,a real feel of pride that we had while watching DB10.Please sell Adebeyor..i wont care if AW does some shopping or not but we need to ship Adebeyor.10 people behind him do something magical and this bastard does something so heinous, that looking at it would ignite a brabaric thought in our minds. And still Wneger replaces RVP instead of this mother fucker.I feel like crying,so helpless and angry.

I never hated anuypne not even Cygan or our own Senderos but i hate Adebeyor…he sucks like shit of the spurs

  6. Brilliant stuff, YW, thanks.

I thought Song was better than reasonable. Apart from 1 slip he really looked the part.

Jens & Gilberto also deserves credit for their performances in probably their last big games for the club.

Much to talk about in the summer but I wish this player bashing would stop. There are many pros & cons with Ade but he is far from peak yet.

  7. and i forgot..In Arsene I trust..

  8. Give a run of play for Song and he’ll be better than Senderos. If Song gets the same chances as Senderos we’ll not be crying the way we’re doing.

This whole failure to get one past Pool is because of Senderos. Arsene should send him on loan or his contract not renewed when its expires. We’ve had enough patience for him and after mistakes after mistakes and cup and key EPL match losses, it should be over.

We have change our policy of foreign for now. It hasn’t worked, you may disagree. We’re losing because match officials don’t want us to be successful for other EPL teams to copy and bring the whole English football down.

We need English players in the team as we used to have durng the successful years. Only the good ones. Rchards (City), Curtis Davies(Villa) and Wheater(Boro) anyone of them for CB will be fine.

Winger, Wright-Philips is better than Eboue and can score goals.

Agbonlahor (Villa) will complement Adebayor who can’t shoot and has an appalling goals/chances ratio. Ade’s supreme ego evidenced by his goal celebrations means that he can’t continue to be the loan striker because his cockiness will eventually destroy the compactness of the team if left alone. The pace of Agbonlahor and his ability to shoot from afar will help Arsenal a great deal.

Reasons to go for English this time round.

    1. English players are expensive true; but they will sell tons of shirts and repay the investments in them. I’m told its only Cesc who sell shirts better. This is because foreign players don’t sell much shirts. PriceWatershouse says Pool, Manu, Chelsea all sell more shirts; reason 2,3,4 not more English regular players in their team.

    2. Officials are hard on Arsenal because they don’t want Arsenal to be successful for other clubs to copy same. Reason, the whole English football will crash to the ground.

    3. We have not won anything without an English regular in the team. It speaks volumes, because, they have the capacity to glue the team togetherboth on and off the field, Gerard and Callagher(Pool), Terry and Lampard(Chelsea), Ferdinand, Nerville, Scholes, Rooney (MANU).

Cole said he couldn’t communicate in the dressing room as one of the reasons he left.

Let’s spend on some very good English players like we did years ago for Campbell and the result will be immense.

Combination of English and foreigners is the solution. Foreigners XI will eventually fail.

    A WORD TO THE WISE

  9. passenal, when we bash ade it’s because of the chances that come his way and he fails to take them, can’t you see?

  10. you see now its ade bashing it is the facts we create more chances than any team and covert the least i just think he is not good enough infront of goal. i tell you we will play with same team next year and it will be the same its simple get a striker who will take 1 in 3 of his chances not 1 in 5

  11. This blog was spot on.
I thoguht we would be outplayed by Man U, but got more comfy as the game went on. We were crisp, at times man u was outplayed.
People been putting pressure on the defence, but if you don’t score then defenders will be exposed.
Imagine if Eduardo had Ade chances yesterday he would have scored a hat-trick.
I’ve supported Ade, and lets face it his goals helped us a lot, but he looks ragged and clumsy, bcos he is a confidence player, and he has got none left at all.
Watch the goals he score against spurs when he was banging them in. It is not the same player.
Having said that i was sad yesterday but happy at the same time.
We can give anyone a game even without our first choice eleven.
And nxt season if we can score at least 1 goal per chance then we will destroy teams.
    Come on Arsenal!

  12. Aw says the other top teams aint much better than arsenal. To a certain extent. They have won games against Arsenal. The gunners have lost to MU ,pool and Chelsea in crucial games where it mattered most. What has been the common factor in all these games?
The gunners have been unable to hold on to the lead. That shows the defence is suspect under pressure.kolo has lost some of his edge and has been mugged by the top strikers.
As for the attack it’s too slow and ponderous in execution thereby rending it less potent.
If AW say s he needs one player he is deluding himself and Arsenal could be in a rut.

  13. toure himself said tht he was physically exhausted after the ANC…..true…wat can we do but play him….no 2 nd string choice of centre back!!!!

we dont lack talent but the way the teams are stretched these days….we need to have more choices and the opportunity to rest players while we can……
for tht we need to buy a few players…no doubt…but foremost ….keep this team together…

i wud be unhappy if even lehmannand gilberto leaves……flamini..i think thinks he is indispensible…but he isnt…..he will find tht out himself wen he goes to juve or somehwere else if he does.

    song for captain anyone??
    :D

  14. I was proud of the boys yesterday – i thought they were amazing. To go to Old Trafford and score a goal this season is pretty impressive, but to go there and pass them off the park was something else… such a shame the result didn’t go our way.
It was the type of match where if we’d had an inform, seasoned, world class striker up front we’d probably have won comfortably…
    Eduardo sadly springs to mind.
Thought Song played very well, he can pass the ball well out of the defence which certainly helps and his positional play looked good… the defense still looked very shakey though…
Roll on next season i suppose.
We didn’t for one minute think we’d win the premiership or the champions league – i had a glimmer of hope, but i’ve always said that next season will be our year.
It’s an incredibly exciting team – i just hope they stick together & that AW brings in two, maybe three players to boost what they already have.

(Flamini, PLEASE sign a new contract!)

  15. ‘If you lose you are slaughtered beyond reason’ – AW. I think the piece he wrote on Arsenal.com is exactly right.

A few minor adjustments and next season will be a real success. We will have the most experienced ‘team’ (people who play together a lot) in Europe.

The only English players I would like to see in our squad are the ones coming through our system.

Ajax, Oranje, Arsenal….I wonder where DB10 will start his managerial career?

    I agree with AW

  16. Frank

    <I agree with AW

Dangerous thing to do but I would also.

However, what I do not agree with is buying English for the sake of some imaginary conspiracy per Howard @ 7.48. The key to signing’s is to buy the best, irrespective of nationality. The notion of some cartel behind the scenes influencing referees is just too X-Files for me.

  17. watch all the highlights and goals here

    http://srohit.blogspot.com/2008/04/manchester-united-v-arsenal-13-april.html

Although it was a good performance, we have nothing to show in terms of points. This world is so result oriented. If the league had been decided based on performance, then i have no doubt arsenal would have won it, without a shadow of doubt. And chelsea relegated :-)

  18. Didnt yesterday just sum up our season in a single game?

We were totally in control, and then a moment of stupidity by one of our defenders results in a goal for the opposition, and at the same time lifts them, and knocks our confidence.

However, even i didnt think we would play as well as we did, so hats off to the boys for producing.

    2 points…

1 – we clearly need to strengthen our defencein the summer – Toure and Gallas cannot play together anymore – they are too small. We need a big powerful centre half ala Vidic. I will say it again – get Richards – forget the cost – we now have the money.

2 – all those knocking Ade – you are fools. The guy has been excellent for us this season – 20+ goals – and he has run himself into the ground. His recent performance levels may of dropped – but he has single handedly ran the line for us this season.

Where are the other goal scorers this season?

  19. Quite right Frank & Rev, although there may be some English lads

If you consider our best team:

    Almunia
    Sagna Kolo Gallas Clichy
    Hleb Cesc Flamini Rosicky
    RVP Ade

We have not been able to field that side all season.

On what do you base your comment on Flamini, gunner4life? Do you know him?

It is just as likely that the opposite is true & that he may be worried about his place in the team, next season. I hope he signs a new deal & believe he will do so.

We need at most 2 draws to be sure of CL next season. If the Chavs beat Wigan & Everton during the week, before we play Reading, 2nd place would be unlikely.

That being the case we would have 4 matches for useful experimentation.

  20. Oliver Holt who is one of the most respected and honest football writers said it all when he said Adebayors missed chances were criiminal. Ade has gone backwards the last 2 months he should be on the bench for last 4 games, and RVP, Walcott, combination explored, especially if Sagna comes back and can cover Walcotts defensive weaknesses. Song should also play CM if Sagna is back and Toure, Gallas revert to CB. We do need someone to coach the defense only 11 clean sheets is one of the problems. Tony Adams would be ideal if he could get on with AW. RVP is getting match fit and if hes not injured as usual when playing for Holland he will make an impact next season, but e do need a replacment for Rosicky who will never be completely fit.

  21. Matt if EDS was out there yesterday he would have had a hat trick, how many sitters has Ade missed?

  22. [...] imarsenalman 9:33 am Last night the dream was over. We lost 2-1 at Old Trafford, A scoreline that never told the actual story of the 90 minutes. It was a tale of two penalties.  [...]

  23. flint…

i dont knw flamini personally neither do u….but i duuno abt how myopic i am….but cant see flamini going thru another season without any injuries….he has been lucky in terms of injuries…so has been clichy and the others like dudu rvp sadly unlucky…thts how it turns out for us most of seasons…thr but not quite!!!!!

and let me tell u if we dont want dein coming bak saying “i told u” and stuff…we have to keep ppl on their toes….flamini is no exceptional footballing talent…he is a horse runner….tht we can find plenty.

i dont mean to be saying he shud be sold…jus tht he is feeling a bit too much abt him…

u know i felt song shud be played…and given a chance in central defnsive midfield….i know it sounds less weird now tht wenger has given him a chance in such a big match….

wat do u want….few overworked guys (read clichy, sagna, flamini, fab) or a full team of committed players…who can complement each other in terms of playing time…??

  24. Just a word Solgooner. Oliver Holt is a complete and utter one-eyed Manu fan and notorius for dising Arsenal. He may be respected by his media and press cronies but should not be respected by Arsenal supporters. Shame on you for quoting a hack.

  25. sologooner…
perfectly agree…toure and gallas go bak to CD and song in front of them…
    sagna/eboue clichy as wing baks…

    walcott/hleb fab hleb/walcott van persie

    ADE

should be the case…it fits to bill almost for evone…not the fans…the players.

  26. Matt

Whilst I agree Richards is a great prospect, I think we have enough of those at the club & in Djourou & Song probably long term better players.

What we need is an experienced big CB to be around when needed to partner Kolo or Gallas. Who though? I still feel that Gilberto should be persuaded to drop back to CB. He has the height & will attack the ball as a CB.

I really suspect that Kolo has not been 100% physically right for some time & that has affected his confidence & thus that of our defence, which had been pretty good until February.

However at the end of the season the goals against will probably be around the 32 mark, which would be as good as all but 3 of the 16 Tony Adams seasons.

  27. I don’t think anyone could question Flamini’s commitment ever or now his ability.

He has played because he has more than deserved his place, has a huge engine & Song has only just come back from injury, in any case.

He has every right to negotiate the best deal for himself, just like any other player. Why make totally made up assumptions about how he sees himself?

  28. thought we played really well yesterday and I felt proud of the boys. thing is Arsenal cannot win a game when playing badly like united and chelsea do. that is our key weakness at the moment. its hard to put a finger on why this is but we do appear a bit too powder puff still. its not that we get bullied out of games but we make mistakes and give away goals too often when we are under pressure.
However, I thought it was an incredibly soft freekick awarded for the Gilberto foul on Evra, which Hargreaves scored from. Arsenal would never have been awarded the same freekick at the other end.

I thought leading up to the penalty, there was no pressure on Carrick at all. that should not be the case. maybe Flamini would have been there. where was Gilberto or Cesc or RVP? Are they working hard enough like united do when they dont have the ball? it seems to me like a team thing and thats something only wenger can work on.

as for weak squad and injuries. We do have a weak squad. if Flam gets injured we cannot bring in an equal player. look at united., if Hargreaves gets injured they have Anderson. If Ronaldo gets injured they have Nani. We could not even cover Rosicky’s injury. All over the pitch they have a quality back up player. I dont think Arsenal do and when it comes to the business end of the season this is where a strong squad makes the difference. you can say you feel unlucky with injuries but if you have a strong squad you dont notice injuries. you only notice them when weak players are having to come into the team.

  29. ARRRRGGHHHH!!!

If Henry had scored 25 goals in one season which he did on numerous occasions, everyone would be singing his praises. Ade scores 25 goals and people are calling for him to be sold?? WTF is up with these people? Ok so he is no Torres in front of goal but earlier this season both Lineker and Shearer were talking about him as being a complete striker! These guys know much more about it than all you twats so please shut up!!

Ade is a hard working player who has scored some fantastic goals this season, the one against the Spuds sticks in my mind especially! He has improved emencely from last season and I see no reason as to why he woudn’t improve the same amount again next season.

  30. Sol,

How do you know Eduardo would of even been in the right place to get the chances on Sunday?

To say he would of scored a hat trick is plainly ridiculous!

Ade has lead the line for the whole season – and has scored many goals for us this year.

Every striker misses chances or has an off day – what about Thierry in Paris? 2 sitters – missed.

    Flint,

Richards isnt just a great prospect – he is a great player now, at 19, and is an Arsenal fan as a boy.

He is exactly what we need – him and Gallas or Toure at the back would be perfect.

  31. dunno flint….some days my hunches bcom true.

if i were a plyr in the dressing room…i would have seen wat happnd to gilberto(for no apparent fault of his…and the only apparent reason is wenger’s inclination to work and communicate with fellow countrymen)…or jens…or ljunberg…or henry….i mean wudnt have henry stayed if we had brought one gud player even if it was just to appease him…dont tell me trezeguet isnt gud enf.

such things create doubts in minds of players… and its all too obvious wat cesc and flamini are doing with the speculations surrounding them….”THEY R KEEPING THEIR OPTIONS OPEN” like we all do…And wenger has been and will be defiant to bend on salary terms….mayb he wud keep flamini over some bonuses…

but i feel its important to keep evone on their toes…

  32. I knew we will play well, but end up losing the game, because of AW ’s tactic. He(AW) played exactly the squad that was my ideal team apart from Lehman (I rate of course). But he played too many players out of positions, which he ends up making the wrong substitution when things are not going to plan.

This is my team in Yogi’s match preview:

    Almunia.

    Eboue- Toure- Gallas- Clichy.

    Song- Gilberto.

    RVP- Fabregas- Hleb.

    Adebayor.
    4-2-3-1.

With two defensive midfield, we control the game better by defending distance away from our box, taking pression off our defense. We have often been successful, playing only Flamini there, burning energy to compensate this. Gilberto can’t do what Flamini has been able to do. That’s why I was expecting the above formation.
In the first half, we did well, control the game, mainly because Eboue always drifts himself in middle to play like a defensive midfield when we don’t have the ball, plus his clever passing that helps us keep the ball. He may not contribute too much going forward, but every time he ’s been replaced by Walcott, we may be more dangerous going forward, but we lack the balance we get with Eboue in midfield. I know I won’t win this argument with a lot of fans here; but I am just saying what I see with this particular substitution of Eboue; simply our game doesn’t get any better with it.
With Adebayor, our main striker, next season we won’t move forward, because he is not a striker.
A striker normally scores clear cut goal scoring opportunity; Ade doesn’t. He is good squad player who will keep scoring his odd goals, but he is not a striker. We are on losing side as the result of his unmissible chance he gets and f**k them up.
His miss simply sends the team moral low, and we go on to lose games in process. We need a top striker next season, Hantelaar should be on AW’s book. I can’t see Fabregas , Clichy, Hleb… wasting energy like that with Adebayor being their main striker next season. AW needs to think hard about that. Yes, some few English lads in the team is required if we don’t want to be here next season complaining about the ref.

  33. ade is a troublemaker, he creates trouble for defenders… he is strong, quick, can hold the ball and a constant aerial threat.. yes, he’s been missing a lot of chances, but think about it, why is he getting so many chances? because there is no one else to take them! who is going to score? eboue? please…or maybe hleb who has a shot once a month? van persie who has been out all season? fabregas scores sometimes out of long shots and good positioning, and eduardo was getting goals before the birmingham game, but after that? who is going to get the chances? face it guys, the only reason ade is getting so many chances is because our team has never changed since henry left, they are still feeding the ball like mad to their main stricker as if henry was still here… we dont have goalscoring wingers, and our second stricker has been a death trap for players all season… the reason ade misses so many chances? because he is not henry… he is not the type of stricker that should be getting so many chances, goals from set pieces, thats what he is good at, and thats what we were missing LAST YEAR, REMEMBER? Ade is not the problem, goalscoring options is the problem… AND WENGER SHOULDNT BUY SHIT THIS SUMMER! OPEN YOUR EYES! WE HAVE A GREAT TEAM, AND IF ROSISKY, VAN PERSIE AND EDUARDO WERE FIT WE WOULD BE CHAMPIONS NOW WITH 4 GAMES TO GO, AND YOU ALL KNOW IT! only buy to replace the ones that might be leaving… COME ON GUNNERS!

  34. ade creates so much for himself AND gets himself in good positions to score. its only his finishing that lets him down on occasions. most other players cannot create as much as Ade. he is incredibly hard to mark as well and to be fair 25 goals is very good. if RVP scored 25 goals as well we’d be champions.
for a player that gives so much to the team AND scores 25 goals I am surprised he gets as much stick as he does. he rarely gets injured and thats something you cant say about a lot of our players.

Listen I am not saying we should not buy another striker but dont sell Ade. I actually dont think wenger will buy a striker. I think a centre back may come in in the summer as thats what we really need along with a winger or two.

  35. Ribery. That is all.

  36. Gents, Why Didn’t George Graham’s men conceded every week, why when the opposition got a corner could Arsenal fans relax? Because the whole team knew how to defend, Ian Wright could tackle more proficently than any of our current midfielders and Alan smith was a brilliant defender from set pieces. We have too many players who think the most important thing in the world is themselves scouring, van persie, Heleb Rosicky and Adeyneverscore are a defensive joke, they don’t track back and if they do none would ever consider actually competing for a 50-50 ball

  37. Well football really is a funny old game, we lost in a game where it would be fair to say we deserved something. I am left stunned to a degree that people are on the bandwagon about any players not being up to scratch, 11 take the field and it is a team sport. I personally think Ade has played well this season and scored goals… anyone actually disagree? I have seen many people claim he does not score enough goals… well does any striker ever score enough. Let’s face it, you score 20 we want 30 and 30 we want 40… get a grip. There is no question we have faulted as the finish line loomed and have paid the price for a thin and rather tired squad. The question now is what Arsenal intend to do during the summer break, the obvious need is central defender and I would say winger (left) but I suspect that Vela and Merida along with Rosicky (if uninjured) may be deployed. In truth my biggest concern is not the lack of squad depth because Wenger has said he wants to give youth a chance, but rather injuries. The last 2 seasons have been shockers for injured players, leading the list Rosicky followed by Van Persie. I see both as exceptional players but they have to play and questions must be asked about the durability of the squad with all the injuries that have hit us. I would love a big name but it isn’t going to happen, Wenger knows his job but even he would concede his squad was thin for the run in.

  38. Despite the nagging and empty feeling that those goals from penalties bring, like a lot of other responders, I thought the team and the game were terrific yesterday.
    Heroic, actually.
Not just that they played so beautifully so much of the time, but they did it in spite of the principals being absolutely bone weary by now. The easier tie for MU mid-week (and larger, less injured squad) meant they came in much fresher, but you couldn’t tell. Maybe that told only at the end.
And the lads didn’t even have Sagna or Flamster, two of our best at holding things in place — and keeping energy up.
    And so many positives:
Song in from nowhere. Did fine, considering. What promise for next year.
How about old Kolo barreling through people. Loved it.
People finding Bendtner twice in a short time, even if he couldn’t score.
And Clichy and Hleb were out of their minds. Just brilliant.
Also, we were the only ones to score from open play. No small thing.
And Ronaldo (what a pr*ck) could not score.
There’s even an upside to losing instead of drawing. Rather MU winning the league than those arrogant, store-bought thugs at Chelsea. Maybe that 2 points will help.
What a game. So much heart, so much skill. No matter how tired they must have been.

  39. Whilst you are right to a point, Simon, if you look up the record books, apart from 1 or 2 seasons GG’s teams actually let in as many & often more than we are likely to this season.

1 of Ade’s strong points is that he does work hard when the other team has possession. That is why the critism of him is so wide of the mark.

    Bentner cannot match his workrate.

Hleb & Rosicky are both very creative players, who cannot be accused of not working hard for the team.

I think AW may have to think about the structure of the team for some games. Yesterday MU played both Carrick & Hardgreaves, there will be times when we should play Flamini & Song to allow more freedom for Cesc & Hleb or when you want to play Walcott as an out & out forward.

  40. What we’re desperately missing are intelligent midfield/forward players, players with real pace and some warriors. Fabregas & Hleb are the brains while Walcott is the only one with blistering pace, sadly we have no real warriors. The invincibles had players who could combine those qualities as well as players who could finish.

Injuries and real bad luck have also contributed to another trophyless season but Wenger can’t continue giving players such as Eboue, Senderos, Gilberto, Adebayor & even Gallas first team slots. Some need to be sold and replaced while others should be just squad players.

Its no good being praised for playing great football while going season after season without sucess. The blend is not right, we need more experienced, clever, stronger & faster players to win things. Man U have them, Chelsea have them & even Liverpool have them, we don’t.

  41. Got to say Hleb was brilliant. But the team was so so naive in not even reacting when Hargreaves ran up for the FK.

  42. I think it is hilarious that it has been suggested that we should sell Ade and buy a player like Berbatov.

If you look at the stats Berbatov has only socred 22 goals in all competitions this season. That includes all those shit teams they played in the EUFA cup. That, for those of you with no brains, is 3 less than Ade has scored in the league?

Do the maths and shut your gobs.

  43. yes injuries…bad play and luck all hav jad a say against us this season…while we can only crib abt injuries and luck….we can work only on the playand players….to reach such an extent where luck doesnt have a say anymore…..

i blve tht shud be the mindset on all players…to make them al right wat went wrong in the final third of this season….tht anger is enf to motivate the fans…and the players too i am sure.

common gunners….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can wait till eternity(next season :D ) for us to win them all.

  44. The lads played well – I got 12 to 1 at the start of the season on the Gunners winning the league and the bet was looking good for a long time – there is no way that I will get 12 to 1 at the start of next season with any of the bookies, that is for sure.

I do feel however that there are things that need to change:

    1. Gallas aint a captain – he has a big gob but needs to be able to match his chat with big performances.

    2. We need to take some of the strain off Adebayor – sign another striker as I don’t think Bendtner is going to make it.

    3. Sign a couple of other players to add to the squad if we are going to continue to have injury prone players (RVP and Rosicky have been missing for most of the season it seems like).

    4. Following on from 3 above, STOP playing players out of position. (and get rid of that faker, Eboue).

Come on AW, you know it makes sense ;-)

  45. ade and berbatov no match really…considering the delivery tht our midfield manages every match…we would have routed those 4 teams which we drew against since birmingham.
    berba and ade…no comparision..no offense

  46. Sorry gunner4life but the facts, do not match up to your words. Yes Berba is a class act, but Ade has been more effective this season.

You cannot say that it is due to all the chances our midfeild lays on, that is just rubbish. He has made many of those chances himself. I will just not accept that Ade is useless as so many are saying.

One more point is that Ade is only 24 and Berba 27 so Ade has 3 years to improve.

  47. i respect ur views drew…but he will remain useless(compared to berbatov) whether u accept or dont. For a club like Arsenal he shud be a gud 2nd string striker…to get the odd consolation goal if he can….if he cant still he wont be getting any bashes like he gets now….

    sry but thts true.

  48. Frank . Oliver Holt comes from Wigan and is not a MANU supporter. He is not a hack. His views on most sports are quite brilliant, and unbiased

  49. the odd consolation goal?? most teams would kill for a 25 goal a season striker!!

  50. Howard 07:48

You do come up with some racist rubbish, but to say your argument for english players is based on Shirt Sales is ludicrous.

I have no proof but from looking around the streets I would imagine that

Liverpools top selling shirt is Torres
    Chelsea is Drogba
    Man Ure is Ronaldo

    None of them are English

Not only that but Shirt Sales in the UK is a mere fraction of what can be made in far east.

I leave you with this, which of these shirts would sell more globally if we bought these two players

    Ronaldinho or Agbonlahor

On Yesterday well done Arsenal, I know we have come up short but are not far off, just a bit of tinkering and we are there.

I dont like song but he had a good game yesterday

    Come On The Arsenal

  51. Pathe considering Song was rusty after not playing for 2 months, he did well and as a CM to replace Gilberto he would be fine

  52. Definately Sol

Like I said I am still to be convinced,

but he did well yesterday, He made some telling tackles and interceptions

and I hope he gets a run out till the end of the season to show his worth

Another thing is I cant remember the last time Ronaldo was so quiet in a game, I think we did a good job on him.

I also thought Jens played well. I was shouting for someone on the post for the freekick as Manure will always shoot from those positions so offside rarely comes into it.

I just think we need a winning mentality back in the squad, and maybe changes need to made on the coaching staff rather as well as in the squad. I saw a remark from RVP yesterday which baffled me, I cant find the link but it was to do with Entertaining over winning Trophies… Maybe it was taken out of context and I am not having a real go at the guy but that is not the right mental attitude.

  53. hmm…considering the choices tht we r left with…i wud say song is the future captain….seriously..unless wenger goes buying a captain.. :D

and 25 goals a season how many seasons??..
i dont say he is shit..(but he is shit wrt berba for sure)..

but he is not strong in one on one situations which is too big a negative for an out and out striker….his distribution is not gud for most of 90 minutes…wat more do u want…

still i feel he has a role to play in the 2nd choice striker…and i am sure he will stay…..but its ominous tht we buy a striker…..

  54. Keeping it simple: I love Ade…

  55. clichy owns ronaldo every single time…..in fact clichy owns every one on the left flank…except if i correctly remember diouf.

  56. well they certainly gave it a good go yesterday. dodgy team selection as ever, i can not understand why toure kept on playing right back, surely you only want to weaken 1 not 2 positions in the back 4 and toure is no right back.. again rvp left wing and complete waste of time and of course our old friend eboue, who not as bad as usual did very little.

we have been very unlucky with injuries and decision but i think wenger hasn’t helped issues with playing players out of position so regularly.

as far as going for forward we all know what will happen, we will bring one or two players lose one or two players. at the begiining of the season we will have the same excuses that the squad is young and we shouldn’t expect much, that coupled with the euros and obvious additional exhaustion and injuries that will create, will give wenger even more ammunition to fend off those who would like to see a squad that can fully compete with chelsea and man utd.

i personally do not want to hear after this year that expectations are low so we should just be happy if we finish top 4 which is basically what wenger said this weekend.

we need to step it up.

  57. I agree. when things are going badly dont make it worse by playing more players than you need to out of their favoured position. OK so Toure was not having the best of times in the centre of defence but I thought he looked worse at right back. he made errors that showed up that he is not a right back. Eboue would have been a better choice there ever since Sagna got injured at Chelsea.
the RVP one I can understand in this game because who else was there! diaby is even worse on the wing than RVP (and was suspended anyway).

Not sure whether Sagna is coming back, he may be. also does anyone know why Toure went off yesterday? was he injured?

I think the 4-4-1-1 works for us away from home but a couple of observations. the 2 wide players need to offer a real goal threat. RVP can do that, though did not get a goal yesterday, he did have a couple of bloked shots. on the other wing, eboue is pathetic going forward. that is a key weakness. he cant score goals. replace him with a 10 goal a season winger and you have yourself a proper title winning team.
But the 5 in midfield allows us to boss possession, be strong in midfield and allows Hleb to play in his favourite position – the hole. Shame he cant shoot though.

I would sell Eboue and Senderos and buy a massive fast strong brute of a defender. Someone with real leadership qualities as well. might cost a bit but it’d be worth it. He could play either with Toure or Gallas and these could also play backup for right back and left back in the event of injuries.

  58. rvp, can not play left midfield and has never put in a good game there (his cross aside for the goal). if we are playing the 5 in midfield then walcott should have played there.

i don’t get the theo thing, a player to be considered part of the 1st team squad should be trusted enough to start games, if not he shouldn’t be considered part of the 1st team squad. i am not saying starting every game but to be contiually left out becasue he can’t handle the whole game seems ridiculous to me.

are we going to see the same for vela next season, if so don’t consider them 1st team players and buy players you are prepared to play week in week out if neccessary. the result is playing others out of position or players who are clearly not up to it, ie eboue, diaby, or toure

  59. Gazzap I have seen Vela play several times for Osasuna and once he gets used to EPL he could be that 10 goal winger. With passes from Cesc and Hleb sprayed to him he could do better than he has as Osasuna where he hasnt got that class of support and still done well especially against the big teams.

  60. Dan its the same with Hoyte if hes only good enough to play last five minutes then he should go, hes been on loan came back played a few first team games but now hes behind Sagna, Ebuoe, and Toure.

If we could exchange , Hoyte, Senderos, plus cash for a good player it would be ideal, based on Wengers economic theories.

  61. Solgooner. You have been sold a pup son. Oliver Holt is a hack, he is opinionated and he dislikes Arsenal. His mother is ‘Emily Bishop’ of Coronation St fame and he was born in Manchester…and very much supports the Manu setup.

The main point is that I do not think that you should quote journalists., their comments are often wrong and have an ulterior motive. Oliver Holt is no better than the rest.

  62. hoyte is a very adequate player to come in once in a while. to me playing toure and song instead of hoyte and toure in their correct positions was so dumb again!!!! especially after seeing how toure has struggled at right back in the past few games.

if he has that little faith in him hoyte would be a complete mug in staying, i think he has shown a great attitude, but from his point of view if he doesn’t leave he is a plonker, he could get in to most teams and play every week.

  63. Thanks Yogi for this fantastically positive article.

Just wanted to post a few random comments:

We have proven more than once this season that we can control the PL’s two best goal-scorers, Torres and Cronaldo. Has the media given us credit for that?

Like many gooners, I can’t stand Myles Palmer. However, his analysis of the Liverpool game last week was on-target. He made the excellent point that “Gallas had Babel.” I know some bloggers have already pointed that out but you should go to Palmer’s site where he describes very well how Gallas was poised (and would’ve succeeded) in preventing Babel from scoring. It was Kolo who let us down.

Having re-watched the Liverpool game, I blame Almunia more than Senderos for their first goal. I’m not an Almunia-basher but it was his decision to kick the ball into the stands that led to the Pool’s free kick close to our goal, which led to a corner for them, resulting in Hyypia’s goal.

Watching Arsene these last few days at press conferences and at the game on Sunday, I’ve rarely seen him look so down. I may be naive but Ferguson’s gesture seemed sincere to me.

And Oliver Holt is a massive Arsenal-hating jerk.

  64. Oh, and I know I’m wrong to say so but I couldn’t help but love Hoyte for kicking Cronaldo when he was on his little stepover tear.

  65. yes, shame he didn’t kick him harder.

  66. Marcus what proof have you that Olly Holt is a massive Arsenal hater?

  67. who cares if holt is hater, we should only care what we think not journalists. i think overall there is a bias against us, however when we do well they also go completely the other way, ie after milan we were the best team in the world.

overall wenger gets a good ride in the media, only now are legitimate questions being asked as they should do. we have won 2 in 12, 8 points out of 24. the season completely imploded any of the top 4 managers would be receiving scrutiny they would not be journalists if they didn’t ask questions.

to ask if his “philsophy” has failed is complete fair game especially as wenger continually talks about his different “philosolphy. we are one of the big 4 and should expect it.

  68. Dan I dont think there is a bias at the end of theyear we were praised as the best team but it was asked could we sustain it, we now know the answer. Wenger philosophy and Wengerspin should be questioned, and stupid comments by some of the players especially Ade are not needed,

  69. i didn’t mean at the end of the season i mean in general, they do seem to be glee in our demise.

the media and pundits spent all year saying we wouldn’t last and they were all proved to be right, so a certain amount of gloating is expected anyway.

  70. I think that the fact that this Holt ‘fella’ has come out and questioned Arsenal and Wenger is pretty justified if you ask me! I am questioning Wenger and I am not an Arsenal hater, whats the problem?

Anyway I dont care about Holt and for that matter dont care about what the media think, all I care for is Arsenal FC and their fans.

I hate all this protection surrounding Wenger, questions should be asked as we are a club that should expect to be winning, questions need to be asked why? Why has this happened? How have we thrown it all away. Yes we can blame players, yes we can blame the squad size but all of this comes back to the manager. When we are winning Wenger is deemed as the greatest man to walk this planet, when we loose and more importantly when we throw away a title. We have to question the manager.

Everyone is going mad at Eboue, but Wenger picks the team and if he is not good enough, he shouldnt be playing. No-one else can make that decision and Wenger has to be held responsible. In fact the thing I cant understand is Wengers stubborness not to put Eboue in at right back? He has played there his entire career at the Gunners, why now, because Wenger wont back down on his idea he can create him into a winger should he not go to right back as cover. He is either bloody minded or admitting he was a mistake playing him there all last season. Either way he is admitting fault.

RVP on the left? Why? He is a striker!

He plays Diaby on the left, why? He is a central midfielder!

This idea of trying to change players positions at the cost of our season is simply not acceptable!

I am questioning Wengers decision to play certain players and indeed the position they are asked to play in!

I love Wenger, but the media and the fans are right to question him! He should not be immune to critisism just because it is Wenger!

  71. Sorry I should have said Dan, Solgooner, Marcus..you are absolute etc etc

  72. William Gallas: “Now we just have to be professional and finish the season well.”

I hope that goal will be shared by the whole team.

  73. why is that frank, because we don’t agree with you and have asked questions about our beloved club. not sure why you and others take such offence, i would have thought we all share the same goal of winning game and trophies.

it is ironic that the same arguments have been going on all year since last summer and will no doubt continue all summer long and all next season. the good news for you obviously is that your beloved arsene will continue as is and you can carry on saying how wonderful and perfect he is even though we win nothing again. you must be a very happy man.

  74. Didn’t Theo start the league game v. Liverpool? He wasn’t too impressive in that game.

  75. more impressive than eboue ever is, and in a team performance that was totally dire in the first half from all the players.

  76. No Dan you are entitled to your opinion though I have to say you are a pretty negative fellow. My comment was about Solgooner, you and Marcus invoking the media and press to support your negative views about AW. No self respecting Arsenal supporter should ever do that.

  77. every self respecting fan is perfectly entitled to give his or her own opinion about our club. i have not quoted anyone in the media and in fact if you read what i said earlier who cares what holt thinks certainly not me.

I am not negative, i am giving an opinion which has been the same for the past year and will unfortunatley probably continue in that wenger having done amazingly well in the past few years when we had no money, is not adapting to the new realities of football ie the wealth of our competitors or own new found wealth.

i hate that he said people expected us to finish 10th so look how well we have done and we just know he is going to say it again next year. i do not expect us to win the CL & PL every year or even 1 in 5 years which is why i also hate it that he has no interest in the domestic cups.

he spins it in one way telling us we are good enough to win everything and then when it blows up in our face like it did this year, he then says at least we didn’t finish 10th and did better than everyone expected. you can not have it both ways, if you are good enough then stand up and say we failed when it mattered and this what i am going to do about it. he says we are as good chelsea and utd and that is simply not true we aren’t be honest arsene.

as said above when we win he takes all the plaudits so when we don’t he should be held accountable. there is nothing wrong with that.

unfortunatley there are so many people (although that is beginning to change) that just say everything is perfect and it isn’t and if we don’t say it who will, the board, the players, pat rice? no one it is one man show and that isn’t healthy at any club.

  78. Yogi good to read such positive thinking (and on other blogs, who has been in bitching mode for some time – except for the extraordinary post from St Myles, who obviously had a bad day yesterday)

Looking forward to next season already – but i think it’s time to replace Gallas – in central defence, by someone (Djourou/Song long-term but maybe an experienced purchase for next couple of seasons) – and as captain, by Flamini.

In Clichy and Sagna we have two of the three best full backs in the league (unfortunately Evra is the other).

I think our strikers will do fine next season – as long as we avoid a situation where we keep playing Ade as sole striker when he’s not on top form. His progress this season has been outstanding, but without vanP or Eduardo – and with Theo a year too young – he hasnt been able to carry the burden of scoring all the goals.

  79. The questions is: Are we questioning Wenger or are we attacking Wenger?

The fact is, in the same season, this season of we won a mere tin CC, the same people attacking him now would be saying Wenger is God.

We on the other hand measure things differently, we know the man is not God, or we would be winning the title every year, but we measure the overall progress of the current team from last year and the year before. We were out of the races by January last year and with a 40 points gap. This year we are out in April with 4 games to go.

I think it’s all about putting things into prospective, knowing that there is still work to do, and wrinkled things to iron.

We can’t have bad luck for ever, and luck can’t go with the Mancs & Chel$ks for ever.

    I’m a Gunner4Ever either way.

    G4E

  80. ‘the media and pundits spent all year saying we wouldn’t last and they were all proved to be right, so a certain amount of gloating is expected anyway.’….your comment Dan.

…and reading your comments through the season you definitely are a very negative fellow.

  81. that was what i wrote i didn’t quote them and say they were right, i merely pointed out that those people that complain about the media’s bias should have expected the media to comment on the fullfilment or their seasons prophecies. ie that we wouldn’t be able to last the season.

as for negative again, i have stated what i don’t like are any comments that show displeasure with wenger negative, do i need to agree with everything that is going on to be seen as positive. when we play well i am positive, when players play well i compliment them, i don’t rant and rave and call people names etc.

maybe i have turned more negative as the past 2 months have been very hard viewing.

  82. Ade’s profligacy in front of goal, so evident in the recent big games, has finally snapped my patience. Don’t sell him – there is so much promise there – but please bring in a clinical finisher and put ade on the bench and wait for him to mature and/or come on as an impact sub and then review the position at the end of next season.

Gallas should be stripped of the captaincy, which probably means that he will have to leave, to save face, which would be a shame. We must find an inspirational leader and I think that this could be done from within the ranks – Flamini would be my choice. I do agree with everyone who says that we need to sign a commanding CB.

Arsene, you are the master. Thank you for all the wonderful, exciting football which your team still plays even in adversity. Despite the heartache of the last six weeks, I am as proud as ever to be an Arsenal supporter.

  83. All those who think Ade should be sold need their heads testing. Have we forgotten he has carried the scoring burden for the team in a lone striking role for most of the season scoring some fantastic goals (20) in open play when he was actually being marked unlike the greasy haired winking Ronaldo who has scored a lot of goals from free kick n penalties. Thats as many goals as all of the Chelsea FC (5) strikers have managed all season. During the same time the other top 4 teams premiership strikers tally in the EPL reads Tevez 12 , Rooney 11, Saha 5, Drogba 8, Pizzaro 2, Kalou 7, Shevchenko 2, Anelka 2.Torres 22, Kuyt 3,Voronin 4, Crouch 3. At this rate all the premiership teams should sell all their strikers!

I suspect Ade’s dip in form like the rest of the team has come about from fatigue and lack of form and confidence. This guy is awesome for wht other attributes he brings to the team not just scoring..

  84. drew10

Let’s face facts; despite the fact that Berbatov plays for Spurs which we all hate, he’s far ahead of Ade.

Place berbatov in place of Ade and he could score 35 goals in a season. He could also let his colleagues score a lot of goals because of his selflessness and higher passing abilities.

His finishing is super and his touch is incomparable.

Don’t compare the two, Arsene made a mistake not going for him as he once said he nearly bought him. What a mistake.

He create goals and scores them. He’s been responsible for Robbie-know-nothing Keane’s 22 premiership goals this season.

If only we had had him as Arsene said he nearly signed him. Spurs don’t desrve him.

  85. Excellent comment G4E.

It has to be said that a lot of people have been attacking AW & Dan because of the language, you have used at times, are certainly one of them.

The reasons why I am so passionately behind AW is because he has, in conjunction with a very progressive board of a directors, moved AFC onto a totally different level, on & off the field.

In 2005 we were in a position where a major revamp of the team was required but partly because of the new stadium, we were radically inferior in purchasing power to our main opponents, & 1/2 the other PL clubs as well.

AW had foreseen this & assembled a great bunch of young players to take us forwards. We could never be in the position of buying ready made players of the caliber of PV4, DB10 etc.

The normal course of events, in this situation, is for the team to drop well down the table for several years before challenging again.

Now we have not only kept in the top 4 but this season we have challenged for the title & the CL to a very late stage. We were not quite good enough, this season, but with a more favourable role of the dice both competitions could conceivably have been won. That is fantastic.

The complaint, of course, will be why didn’t we buy more players to help win those competitions.

Firstly, AW genuinely believes in the players he has assembled, & doesn’t want to put more experienced but less talented purchases in the way of a young player, who can become super class.

For example, if another forward had been purchased where would that leave Theo & Bentner. Both of them will benefit enormously from their playing time, this season.

Added to that there is also still the financial restraints to consider. It is not just the transfer fees but the wages required to keep our best players.

I firmly believe, we are well ahead of schedule, & the pain of today will be rewarded by more sustained success in the coming seasons.

AW is not perfect but can anyone put anyone else forward, who could put us where we are at now, in these circumstances.

Pundits, hacks & we bloggers, come up with a lot of simplistic answers but it is bloody hard to win the major honours. We have come a bloody site closer than 17 other PL teams.

  86. There’s nothing wrong with criticising wenger, as long as it is done with respect, the problem is that a lot of people have been doing it without respect, they have been slagging off Arsene and some players in a rather over the top manner, in a way that lacks all perspective.

The media have been at it too, the criticism has been bandwagon like, rather than sensibly criticising a few areas, they have jumped on several bandwagons in a sensationalist manner as sensationalism sells papers.

Wenger is great, he has his flaws but this season we have been more kippered by bad luck that by bad tactics or bad management.

We do need to add to the squad’s depth and we do need more directness and goals from wide midfield. However Adebayor is a good striker who has 20 league goals and Eboue is not the spawn of satan, while he does have the odd decent game.

Criticism fine, as long as its reasonable and fair. Slagging off, not fine.

  87. flint, i am not ashamed to admit i have been critical and stand by my opinions which have been consistant throughout the season. (which clearly stand for nothing i realize). as we have discussed before he has been a miracle worker, with the 2004 team and 2005 – 2007 getting us where we are today with no cash. but we are in new circumstances and i like so many now seem to be asking where are we going. come on flint do you really we only need one experianced player to solve the issues we have confronted this year?

your answer is yes because wenger says so and who am i to argue with you or wenger, but hey i am bored at work as ever!!!

don’t you even in a moment of weakness, think what the hell is eboue doing on the pitch again or why the hell toure playing right back and song center back in the biggest game of the season and all the other puzzling questions.

    you know you want to!!!!

  88. dan, I genuinely sympathize with some of your posts you but I do wish you’d put more empahsis on the fact that this season’s table rankings clearly show we ARE improving in comparison to the last two seasons. The way some gooners are talking it’s as if we’ve made absolutely no movement this season, that nothing has changed from last season.

  89. i have NEVER said we haven’t improved. and if wenger came out and said now, i can see where the improvements are required we need 3 or 4 players etc. but no he comes out with we are as good as the rest and referres have been our downfall this season and such vast conspiracy is going on!!!

it is not even so much on the field that winds me up. it is for example the comment like we didn’t go for the FA cup this year, that drives me mad. why the hell not!!!

it is comments like we are as good as anyone in the league and even though we came up short we did better than everyone said we would so don’t complain at us for not winning.

it is too much spin going on, on the one hand he plays the we are so poor hand and on the other we are as good as them all.

  90. We have both been consistent Dan.

Of course, I wonder about some of the decisions & yes Eboue is frustrating, because I know he has more to offer.

I expected Song to play but not at CB but it basically worked. It was a game that could have gone either way & we played well.

The difference between us is that you are certainly negative & unrealistically impatient, like many others.

I see a bigger picture & believe that a bit more pain for a lot more gain is the way to go.

We have some terrific young players, who will only get better. If we can keep them together they will win plenty before peaking in 5 or so years time.

We will see what happens in the summer but my guess is that the experienced player will not be the only incoming transfer.

I don’t think AFC will be able to buy the Kakas of this world for a few more years yet.

  91. I agree with the supportive posts in the main but to think AW doesn`t make mistakes is silly. Even he has admitted that. Given the squad & pre-season predictions it`s been a more than decent season & with a bit more luck we could have gone even closer. Whether it`s lack of experience, poor tactics or a physological problem the team has to learn how to win games again (not just the big ones). Overall, we`re not far off & there is certainly no need for any major summer overhaul. Like most on here I agree that we need a decent centre back , with pace, PL experience & strength (Lescott ?), & a goal contributing wide player. The rest will take care of itself. The earlier post about 2 holding midfield players is interesting as it pre-dates Cesc. I think too much is asked of him at the moment & his creativity would be better used in a slightly more forward position. The criticism of Ade is unfair. He`s made obvious progress this season & will be better again next. I never thought he would score as many goals although he seems to be in need of rest right now.

  92. Flint

Who’re those less talented who can’t fit into the team that features Eboue, Senderos,Hoyte, Traore, Diaby and even Gallas?

You mean, Richards couldn’t have fit into the team because he’s less talented?

Seems the players are more important to AW than Arsenal? Hear him ‘I didn’t want to disturb the team’ but to who’s benefit? Isn’t disturbing the structure to ensure Arsenal’s success more important than protecting the players? Now check Ade’s cockiness (you can verify that by the way he celebrates his goals without acknowledging the one who gave him the pass) because he faces no competition.

Please some of us are tired of being told that our players are of higher quality than other club’s. We lost 2:4 to Pool, 0:4 and 1:2 to MANU, 1:2 to Chelsea, 1:3 to Serville and most disgraceful of all 1:5 to Spurs.

A lot of the players are average who need to be replaced. In fact, some of them can’t even get a chance on the bench of Pool, Chavski and MANu yet we claim their of top quality.

  93. Frank. When I quoted the media it was to point out that Ade missed 4 sitters yesterday, not anything to do with Wengers policies.

  94. wat lack of experience??
in terms of matches played we compare favorably with other sides….
its just some unforseen circumstances…and a bit of blame has to go to wenger.

his body language at the end of laast match was disturbing as if….”i thot we wud do better”…
tht man is gr88…..but sadly 90 percent of ppl in this world are result oriented…..much coz they cant c their rival fans winning.

  95. Its now stated that Senderos has had a bit of a mental breakdown and will not play any more this season, so lets sell him as soon as hes OK. He was a good servant but hes not made the grade.

  96. All this crap about inexperience and young players, Cesc has had 4 years experience, Clichy two, Toure 4, Gallas 6, Gilberto 4 Hleb 3, only Theo, Flamini. and Sagna had a first full season, and Bentdner whos only a sub. Its injury prone players like RVP, and Rosicky, and EDS injury that are more important than this alleged inexperience.

  97. Flint we may not be able to buy players like Kaka but we shouldnt let Flamini go just because he wants to be paid similarly to Gallas.

  98. flint where you are wrong is that i am not impatient, i realize that we are not good enough to win the league and CL, never thought we were, which is why all year long i have been so angry that the manager just throws the domestic cups, becasue they are the realistic trophies at the moment. what amazes me is the fans that say look we are not there yet and be patient but at the same time are happy throw away the only real chances of silverware for the possibility of the CL or PL.

wanting to buy a few players to improve your team (which every good manager does and is fundemental to successful management) and is not being impatient it is part of the game.

  99. Arsene Wenger:

“We have had a blip since March and we have to analyse what is the reason for that, but I feel again today, and on Tuesday at Liverpool, that we played very well and the biggest target is to keep the team together.”

Given his track record I think that Arsene will find exactly where we have gone wrong, and act accordingly – just as he did when he signed Overmars to add the finishing touch to the 98 team, Campbell to provide defensive strength after Adams left, and last season he produced Sagna.

The team has been marvelous this season and has come up short, but not too short.

To make wholesale changes to a squad which has narrowly missed out on goals many people thought completely unobtainable at the years start would be naive beyond reason.

Of course we can improve in certain areas, I accept we need to sort of the organisation in the centre of defense, we need to resign Flamini and we need cover there behind him also, assumng Song is now a defender.

The only major thing Arsene will ponder is Rosicky – do we gamble on him ever playing a full year, or do we replace him? I say replace him and keep him as cover. We replace Rosicky we then have Hleb, Theo & Eboue on the right; on the left the replacement, RvP, Hleb, Rosicky, Vela. One addition and all of a sudden the entire squad looks pretty awesome again.

I don’t understand this negativity from fans, I really don’t – we are close, bl00dy close to being the best team in the country & it seems by extension Europe – a damned sight closer than Liverpool are for all the money they have lavished.

Flint, Gazzap, the original G4E – ace posts as always.

  100. sol, if we wanted we could afford a kaka type player, we won’t buy one but certainly could afford it.

  101. Augh! I recorded the match and hadn’t yet watched it when I saw your blog posted on the home page for WordPress.com.

    Augh!

    Damn!

    Rats!

Oh, and it sucks that we lost too.

  102. josef,

we have ceratinly made improvements this year, but we are not “bloody close” to being the best team in england and europe. we are 9 points plus huge goal difference behind, by the end of the season i assume that will be closer to 15 points and knocked out of the last 8 in europe.

that is probably about where we should be and realistic to the team and squad we have.

  103. Patience?

How many of you ever played golf a couple of times? Did you quit because you didn’t shoot under 72 the first half dozen games? Or did you see progress every time you played and go out there in wind and rain and continue to try to improve?

How about ever learn a musical instrument? Did you quit because you were clueless the first two years you tried to play? Or did you see slow improvement, however tiny, and persevere however much your fingers bled?

Ever played squash? Get thrashed 9 nil, 9 nil, 9 nil? Did you give the game up or did you play again and only lose 9-1, then 9-3, then 9-5. And then the next game you won?

    I could go on.

The bottom line is this: The signs of improvement are apparent for all to see. When you see something is improving you double your efforts and work harder and harder again still – until you have gradually ironed out all your deficiencies and you can play golf, guitar, football whatever.

For those of you who want a biff and bang, and a culling, and a spending, those of you with no patience – learn some of this mystical patience for it is what makes life beautiful, genuine, honest, satisfying and joyful. Without patience you are nothing and the world is a grayer, grayer place.

    Arsene Knows.

  104. solgooner

We can’t pay obscene wages just because you’re playing better than previously. At that wage level, he’ll be getting more than Cesc and will open a slug gate we may find difficult to patch up. This is ‘cos the rest will be demanding higher than expected wages as well, sooner than later. Ade will be asking for 70/80 instead of 30/35 he’s now taking.

He’s not indispensable ‘cos Kolo can be moved there and play better in that position.

He may even regret leaving ‘cos no player has been successful maintaining his level after leaving the Arsenal.

  105. Dan . If we win our last four games which is possible we would have 83 points which would be a big improvement, except for that terrible 11 game blip.
As for kaka like you I know we will never spend that money, but how we missed someone like Aneilka in the last 2 months,

It beats me how Wengerspin keeps mentioning building the stadium excuse when it costs just 15 million a year in interest, and the other loans we have will be paid back from property development with 100 million profit, and we aren 3 miilion for every home game.

  106. Howard Ade has a contract, Flamini is out of contract and is earning 20k a week, he wants the commercial rate based on the fact that hes a free agent. We could pay him the 50k offered and give him a signing bonus as is done in the NFL

  107. That is not what I am saying Sol.

As I understand it AW is given a budget that includes transfer fees & player salaries.

The more that is spent on fees the less there is to increase the salaries to keep the players.

Of course we want to keep Flamini & his performances this season should put him in the higher earning bracket. That does not mean we can pay him anything that is not feasible.

Howard, I am afraid as ever, we are poles apart on our assessment of players.

Of those you mention Gallas is a world renowned defender, Diaby is very talented & still not back to his best after a very serious injury, & Traore at 18 is simply a truly outstanding prospect. Senderos can still get much better but I fear he may fall short. I just don’t know about Eboue but he has great skill, plays to instructions, & I believe he can still improve considerably.

I have said Micha Richards has great potential but he is 5′11 & more Gallas & Kolo in style. His partner Dunne is more like the kind of player we are short of (literally), at present.

  108. hopefully we will win our last 4 games.

  109. Dan

That view of the world my friend is why I, Flint, Yogi, Gazzap et al are much happier serene bunnies than you are tonight.

    Howard

I sort of sympathise re. Flamini and his wage demands, if they are reported as true. However, the difference is that Flamini has a unique bargaining position compared to the other players you mention. If and when they are savvy enough to run their contracts down and negotiate hard like Flamini is doing then fair play but until then it is all so much hyperbole..Flamini will get a contract earning what the market and prevailing forces dictate.

As for your Kolo can play there comment, on what body of evidence do you base that assertion? Surely you have an Englishman lined up for the role ;o)

  110. great article by the way,

nice to read such considered comment

  111. i am unhappy Josef, because i see no reason why we can’t be closer still, to the others when we now have the resources to do so.

it is all about expectations if you expect nothing then you will never be disappointed, that is with everything in life, so when the manager says look everyone thought we would be mid table and we are not, haven’t i done well he is looking like a hero, which is why i always say he is the best marketer in the world, keep expectations low and no one will start on me for not winning anything, and in reality it works, because i am sure deep down you are as gutted as i am that the season fell apart (which it undeniably did) and yet you seem as happy as pie.

  112. I’m proud of the boys, silverware or no. They played their hearts out this year and just ran out of gas. I think with some tweaks we’ll be quite a force next season.

  113. i agree that the players have run themselves in to the ground and should be proud of their effort.

  114. Dan,

You are the 1 doing the spinning.

AW has said all season that his team could win the big prizes, now.

What he was responding to was the critism he received before the season started, when many were predicting we would be knocked out of the top 4.

The stick the bloke has taken for frankly overachieving is absurd.

  115. I agree with dan on the last 4 games — we have to win all of them to stay ahead of Liverpool and possibly overtake Chelsea.

  116. Josef K

Defensive mid is Kolo’s natural position until converted as a CB by Arsene. So he can play there if demands by Flamini is not met. In fact , he will be better there than Flamster. Anything above 40 for him is way off. So he can be off.

We’ll then bring in Richards, Wheater or Curtis Davies to replace Kolo and keep Djourou as a back up. Djourou is not too good but he’s still young and untried unlike Senderos who’s had chances and failed.

Vela will come in the wing and a traditional striker will also be needed. In my permutations/pairings, the arrangement will be as follows:

GK -Almunia, Fab and a new signing (Jens off)
    RB-Sagna, Hoyte and Gilbert
LB-Clichy and a new signing. Traore on loan
CB-Gallas,Kolo,Song, a new signing and Djourou. Senderos should leave, not good and will never be good.

CM-Cesc, Flamini(Kolo if Flams leave), Denilson, Gibbs, Randall and Lansburi.

    LM-Hleb,Vela and RvP
RM-Theo, Rosicky and Barazite (Eboue off)
    CF-Nik,Ade,Dudu and a new signing

All new signings should be English. suggested, Agbonlahor. GK Green CB-Richards/Wheater/Davies

    Result

Double title 2008/9 and CL Cup.

  117. I dont trust Hoyte as second choice RB. For all Eboues failings, he is an attacking RB and not a winger, so id keep him as backup to Sagna. Eboue was magnificent the season we made champions league final. Hes a skillful player and i feel a stint on the bench might improve his attitude. Work harder and try emulate Sagnas professionalism

We might be stuck with Almunia, but id really like to see someone like Akinfeev come in as No1

Id hold onto Senderos for a bit yet. Remember Adams was a late bloomer and id hate to lose Sendy only to see him bloom elsewhere. Djouru does look to have more in his locker though. And Song has done well @ CB – but a commanding centre half – a la Vidic would be nice option.

VanP is no left midfielder. Hes a striker and one of our only players who shoots on sight. Needs to stay fit though or he just cant be relied upon to lead our line.

And as for all new signings being English – not with you on that one. Richards i like but hes similar to both Toure and Gallas. Not a fan of Wheater either , is he better that Sendy and Djouru and Song ? Maybe….

    Id go for this…

    GK – Akinfeev
    CB – im stumped
Winger – Ben Arfa – Vela is coming anyway
    Striker – David Silva

  118. Chelsea only drew with wigan so a fight for 2nd place is still on.

I wouldn’t mind Lescott as a CB or Dunne (short term). I also am not sure about Wheater. Richards and Agbonlahor would cost over 40 mil as they have just signed long term contracts.

  119. Chelsea go to Everton on thursday if they lose that and draw win manure and we beat reading and derby we would be 2nd so still some interest in the last few games. Only trouble is they then have NUFC and bolton and we have everton and sunderland.

  120. Lets see if we have enough left in the tank to grab second spot and automatic place in champions league.

Its a big ask but would make a better finish to the season to be able to finish above those cunts

  121. If we can get back to winning ways and get the maximum from the remaining 4 games and Chelski manage to draw 2 of their games …..it could go down to goal difference.

All ifs and buts though really

  122. Denilson played for the reserves tonight so he is getting back his fitness.

  123. Howard. Freddie was on 65k so Flamini is worth at least as much as him. FYI Gilbert is useless and even loan clubs have sent him back. Song can play CM better than CB.

  124. When will people learn – there is no point posting a long list of this player and that player, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment. Wenger has already said he will not buy a lot of new players and knowing his track record whoever he buys will not be a ‘name’ with an expensive price tag. Last summer he bought Sagna and Eduardo, who were not well known, but were just what we needed. It’s just unfortunate that we lost Eduardo when we did as I agree with Wenger that he could have been our secret weapon for the second half of the season.

  125. Passenal

I think AW should not be given a chance this time. Last time he didn’t listen to anybody. Only if he’d gone for Anelka to compete with Ade, we wouldn’t be where we are. Anelka, would have converted all the chances missed by Ade (the striker with no shots in his legs) just for 15+, we win the league and gets to CL finals with a lot of money pouring in to pay back his fees.

Its unfortunate that AW thinks he knows everything and at times wants to play God.

  126. Anelka doing just fine at chel$ea, scores loads for them does he? Are you suggesting we get rid of Wenger?

  127. On the subject of strikers Adebayor has scored 25 goals this season FACT. How many other players in the prem can say that. Our options are limited in this area. Could we sign the mutant Drogba? could we afford him and do we play to his strengths? Hoof ball? no. Berbatov? christ, talk about a fair weather player. Great when things are flowing but have you seen his body language and effort when they (frequently) are not? And we thought Henry was temperamental!
Who else is there? Owen would suit our play but bearing in mind the stick Rosicky gets over injuries would we take that risk?
Ibrahimovic- another big time poser and god knows who wanted Trezeguet. Has he set europe alight this season?
    Would E’to come? who knows.
This isn’t Fifa Soccer in PS2. We need to think about blend, playing style and the realities of finance. What happens when we have to pay some new signing 100k a week (did anyone see Harry Kewell in the top 20 Prem earners the other week 78k pw!) What will the rest do?
If you want an example of money not guaranteeing success- Darren Bent- Enough said.

  128. Hey Howard, are you doing Ethan’s business for him while he’s in exile?

Ease up the rhetoric man. Wenger is not going, so is Ade…you’ve got to learn to live with them. If you don’t want to, just don’t bother us with the subject.

What happened to the English players theory, or conspiracy or whatever?

  129. “Lady Luck had been flitting between the two dugouts and finally made her choice, pecking Arsene on the cheek and turning her affections towards Ferguson like the brazen hussy she is.”

This is why this blog is the best out there!

  130. Some of the opinions here make me want to cry.

  131. sologooner…..flamini can stay or leave it wont affect tht much….there are always ppl who can fill in his gap….

personally i feel flamini is playing out of his skin this whole season….we need to normalize tht sort of commitment over the whole team…not a few overworked(clichy, flamini, fab, sagna) and a few underworked….in the long run it wud always backfire…..which is wat happened wen clichy slipped in concentration in 2 goals (birmingham and fulham)…flamini dip in concentration against liverpool first leg….sagna makes me awe btw…he is a freak!!!!!!!!!

if flamini wants to go..he can….song wil do just gr888 in tht position i am sure….not tht i wud love flamini to go…but he is giving al the wrong reasons…

one thing i dont want to happen is fab leaving….
tht wud be disaster…..and if we dont win anything next time…i am pretty sure he will.

ljunberg getting 65k u say huh…..c in the general case…the wages decreases as we move from men upfront to the mid to the back to the goalie…except the captain.

ljunberg was and still is a goal scoring pacy winger….flamini is a defensive midfielder….tell me any team whose defensive mids get more wages than the attacking wingers???

  132. Ade 25 goals

    Berbatov 22 goals

    Keane 20 goals

These chaps are playing in a team like Spurs.

This is the first time I’ve seen a striker who can’t shoot. If we have had a combination of strikers scoring goals like Keane and Berbatov, no doubt we would have won the league.

Anelka could have scored at least 10 additional goals for us to enable us win the league. He could have also scored two goals out of the chances Ade missed against Manu. He could also scored the two chances missed by Ade against Wigan.

It’s frustrating to see the ‘big mouth’playing misusing all our chances hat come our way n crucial matches.

The fact is Ade is not the predating striker we need. He’s a poor finisher and easy to mrk because you only have to make sure he doesn’t get the ball in the 18. A ball 18,20,25 away is no dangerous ‘cos he has no power in his legs to shoot.

We need a striker please. with the way we play, any good finisher could have scored more goals than Ade.

Ade can’t be soley relied upon. He is cocky and also selfish (just check the way he celebrates his goals). He will be worse tha TH14.

He has poor touch and his passing is terrible.

This summer is a good opportunity for Arsene to get somebody to compete with him.

  133. Howard, Wenger had Eduardo to play alongside Adebayor, but he got his leg broken in February after the transfer window was closed. Are you suggesting he should have known that was going to happen and buy Anelka anyway, just in case?

  134. Back in the 60s we had 2 strikers called Joe Baker & Geoff Strong, who scored tons of goals & I loved them.

We also had a young player, called John Radford, who ran about a lot but his finishing was erratic at best.

Joe & Geoff were fairweather players but you could not always rely on them.

Evenentually both of them were sold & we were left with young Raddy, who continued to be energetic, scored a few & missed many.

After a couple of seasons Raddy improved quite a lot, he was missing a few & scoring plenty. Even if he wasn’t playing well he still kept trying & was always a nuisance to oppositions’ defences. Defending from the front.

Raddy was a crucial player in our first double season & is still one the top 5 all time AFC goalscorers.

Joe Baker, who I still love, won fuck all & Geoff Strong, went off to Liverpool reserves before getting a few games as a midfielder there, including on FA Cup win.

Do I need to explain further.

  135. i’m a big fan of anelka, but he’s a rogue, and i dont think ‘his face fits in at arsenal. That said, i don’t think his face fits in anywhere, so chelsea is probably the perfect club for him. However, i think his experience and of course his ability would have helped us considerably. But, i think AW was right not to sign him, it’d just hold up Adebayor’s progress in the long run, plus, i’m not sure Ade & Anelka would get on – people think Bendtner’s arragnt – Anelka’s so arragant he thought was bigger than Real Madrid… what if’s…

  136. Howard we do need a striker to compete with Ade, and I agree some of his gestures hitting his chest like King Kong are infuriating, but seeing Aneilka last night Im not sure he would have been the answer, EDS showed against MAN City and Newcastle the type of goal he could score, perhaps RVP and Theo could be a good answer.

Rev. Aneilka used to be arrogant, nut hes settled down, I think Ade is more arrogant than him, and with less talent.

We will probably end up with a striker and defender from Europe who nobody has heard of, just like EDS and Sagna.

Gunner 4 life. I do think Song could replace Flamini, especially if hes given the chance in the last 4 games.

  137. I honestly believe if Flam goes wenger will buy a replacement and not just go with Song or Toure. I think song is still due a year more as a backup player. I could be wrong, we all thought that about Flam. also Song keeps getting played in defence. does that mean wenger wants him at the back? I dont think he is the answer to our centre back issue. maybe wenger just wants to see him before the summer so he knows whether or not to buy.

  138. I appologize since i dont know anything about foot ball, i gave a visit eagerly to comment your blog, but your posts are based on the foot ball which i dont know 0%, hence bye…..

  139. Nothing to add except:

Oliver Holt is a total Hack.

  140. …for heaven’s sake yogi create a “prediction” forum….

    shut up G4L.

  141. Did Chelsea just draw with wigan? A team that included anelka who was supposed to have won us the PL and CL?

Should they not disband the entire team? Are ballack, Joe Cole, John Terry, M. Essein and all else actually good enough when they can only draw with Wigan?

  142. Let me get one thing clear before I’m accused of being a “Wenger must go” merchant, I’m a huge fan of his and truely thankful for how he has modernised not just Arsenal but football in this country, his contibution has been immense. But…..

Prior to moving to the Emirates Arsene made it clear that we would have a world class player in each position and be able to compete with Europe’s elite for the best players. That hasn’t happened.

We were also told the pitch dimensions were as such so we could stretch the play in order break d teams down that come to defend. That also hasn’t happened as we have no real wingers in our team, despite having a pretty good home record we dont stretch teams like we used to or get behind them with pace.

Unfortunately what we have today is an economy version of the team from a few years back. Sagna, Clichy and perhaps Fabregas would be the only ones competing against the giants we once watched grace the first team at Highbury not so long ago. Seaman was better than Lehman or Almunia. Campbell much better than Gallas as an organiser and a leader, despite not being the captain. Pires, Ljungberg, Vieira were much, much better than anything we have today and contributed many more goals too. Henry, Bergkamp well I’m not even going to insult them by drawing a comparison.

The team worked harder for each other then, had attacking variation from all angles, were faster, stronger, had better technique and more importantly knew each others strengths and weaknesses. The only thing better today is that we have players in Adebayor & Bendtner who sometimes can score a headed goal but have far less guile or vision.

I will give the present team some credit for playing good football earlier on in the season and for recovering from games when they were behind. Perhaps had Rosicky, Eduardo & Van Persie remained injury free we may have seen a more fluent team but for me the turning point was the Birmingham away game. Not the Eduardo incident but when were leading 2-1 with Adebayor bearing down on goal with Bentner alongside to make it 3-1 to win the game. He chose to be the hero instead of squaring it for an easy tap-in and the rest is history as they say, a run of draws & defeats, confidence lost, title over.

It will be the same if not worse next year if the squad remains as it is. Wenger needs to live up to those promises and give us those world class players.

  143. PABLO AND ALL OTHERS THINKING WENGERSPIN WILL BRING IN STAR BIG NAMES HERE ARE HIS COMMENTS AT HIS PRESS CONFERECE. SO FORGET BIG STARS

For example he was asked if the purchases of Jose
Antonio Reyes and Francis Jeffers had put him off spending high transfer fees, also whether he was ’scared’ of bringing in a superstar like Ronaldinho.

“Scared of what?” he replied. “I would not be scared. We couldn’t afford him now so we have to forget it.

  144. Howard, and anyone else who thinks Ade isn’t up to it. This was J**n T*rry speaking this season. I’m not usually one to quote such a cunt, but remember this is him talking about Ade BEFORE he started scoring goals:

“I have played against some of the very best over the years but Adebayor gave me as many problems as anyone. He was definitely the toughest striker I came up against last year. That’s in the Premier League, Champions League and while playing for England. He was that good. The guy is a real handful. He is tall and strong. Powerful in the air and on the ground. He’s quick and he’s clever. But the worst thing is that he’s totally unpredictable.”

That’s what everyone seems to forget. Not only did Ade score a LOT of goals this year, but his strength lies in the way he snarls up the opposition defence. They are scared of him, because he’s strong, fast and unpredictable.

With another striker playing off Ade, we’ll be unstoppable. Eduardo, Vela, RvP, Walcott – things ain’t so bad. Maybe one more, but let’s see who Arsene comes up with.

  145. You make very good points Pablo, but go away &

Find the ready made, in their prime, replacements for the players you mention.

    Then..

    Put a value on them.

It will take some years before, the true benefit of the new stadium will kick in, so that we can compete for the few truly world class players.

In the meantime AW & his staff have to be congratulated for still competing after losing all those players. This team is still gelling & in few years time you will be saying the same about the next generation.

  146. I also think Hleb and Flam would have got into the invincibles team and of course Toure WAS in that team. so that is 6 players that we have here now whose quality we cannot question.
that leaves space for at least 1 striker, 1 winger and 1 centre back. I happen to think we are OK in the ‘keeper department as well.
So we have Vela coming in. thats the winger. Rosicky will probably stay and hopefully can improve his fitness. Walcott may become a first choice winger as well.
Eduardo is a big question mark. we cannot be sure he will come back the same player. RVP has injury issues. Bendtner is back up to Ade and cannot play alongside him as first choice.

I like Ade but it seems to me he does not strike up a partnership with his fellow striker. Bentdnter does seem to link far more effectively with Eduardo and RVP. But Bendtner is less of a man mountain than Ade. Ade is hard to mark and is more creative than Bendtner. Maybe Ade is the best one to use away from home as a lone striker and Nik B at home when paired with someone else?

  147. Good points Gazzap.

Bentner & Ade are only similar in that they are both tall & lean.

Ade is suited as a loan striker, whilst Bentner as yet is not strong or energetic enough to play that role.

I doubt we will buy another striker, unless someone goes.

Theo, I feel will start to get a lot of games as an out & out striker, next season.

  148. i feel wenger has to buy another striker…if he is not planning to play vela in tht position or promote barazite frm reserves.

if he plays vela as a striker which i think he will…he will need to go for an out and out winger….which i think he will…..

and go for micah…..lets have another swoop like sol.

  149. Flint why will the benefits of the new stadium kick in substantially in a few years time? The basic 25 year debt is 210 milion, and all other debts are due to be repaid by 2009 when the Highbury development is finished, at that time there will be a further 75 to 100 million in profits to reduce the major debt, but at the moment with interest at around 15 million a year, there is no reason why Wengerspin couldnt go out and buy 2 or 3 players in the 7 to 15 million class from outside the UK, winning the CL insteaad of going out in quarter finals next year will be worth 20 million more, so the expenditure would be justified.

We cant rely on Rosicky to have a full season, and RVP hasnt managed one yet, so some strengthening is vital. lets hope we can win the last 4 games to counteract the queasy feeling of tje last 11 games doesnt continue next season.

  150. walcott hasnt impressed wen he has played too long…..he shows moments of brilliance but doesnt look like he can play consistently well….

he needs to slow down for his own gud will…else…nothin will come out of the talent tht he is…

  151. Flint:

Pires was ready made and was bought for a reasonable sum. Campbell was a Bosman albeit his wages were high. When Henry was bought Dwight Yorke & Chris Sutton were sold for similar amounts To Man U and Chelsea respectively. There are good ready made players out there and if anyone can sniff a bargain its Wenger.

The big players we had would attract other quality players. Our star names have gone all in a short space of time and we need to perhaps spend big on a few big names to attract the players that could change our fortunes.

Also, bear in mind we are constantly told that every match day the club grosses £3mil and has a reported turnover of somewhere between £180-200 mil. Factor in the lower wages we are paying to our players since the big names left and it should mean that the profits are greater.

The debt the club has building the new stadium has been structured to allow a greater flexibilty of finances, whilst the income this season from tv rights and merchandising should also be higher.

The club, which incidently is listed at the Stock Exchange as a Property Developer/Football, also has a huge portfolio of properties that when sold should clear the majority of the clubs debts over the next year.

Finally, in the last few years we have made an overall profit of player transfers, ask yourself why are we not spending sensible money on quality players and relying on our youth and inexperienced players to fill the gaps once held by greats. The club hasn’t even replaced Dein who used to negotiate the transfers, why is this? Is it because no transfers will happen? Either we are being fed some porkies or something else is happening that we are unaware of.

  152. DB10, PV4 quality would be more like 35m though.

  153. I also don’t think we are likely to buy any new players so we are fans better start being prepared to support the team we have which is not really as bad as we like to make out.

A strike force of Van Persie, Ade, Bendtner and Theo which ought to have includede Eduardo but for his leg break is not that bad.

AW may not want to risk locking EDS out of the team and may it buy a stiker till next summer when he is sure of how well EDS has recovered. IF all goes along as planned, he should be ready for the second half of next season which will not be ok.

There are no major comps like Euros, ANC and Olympics next year so maybe thats fewer international right? That may also augur well for us as here is less likelihood of RVP getting an injury.

This team will come good make no mistake.

PS. What is this comment about posting comments too quickly? Is Word press trying something out that we are not aware of? I have not posted a comment here for over 2 hrs so can someone please explain what that is about?

  154. concerning EDS … which will be okay, i meant to sya

  155. Pablo what big names are you referring to and where would they play? Cesc is one the worlds top footballers, Sagna and Clichy are in top wing backs 5 in Europe, Hleb is coveted by many other top teams, all the rest are internationals, and ADE is one of the worlds best in his own mind. EDS was the leading goal scorer in Euro qualifying. Big names like Ronaldhino , Henry are passed their prime.

  156. the words big name are not relevant, we need players that will improve our team, an ashley young, agbonglahor, van der vart, ben arfa players like this are not neccessarily big names but would improve our team.

we are not going to sign one of the worlds superstars, it is not going to happen and doesn’t need to happen to take us to the next level.

  157. exactly, and wenger is not into signing superstars. he may sign an up and coming fairly well known player but not a superstar. I think wenger would only buy a player like Ben Arfa if he could get a bargain. I dont see him picking out a big name and then splashing £20m on them. its just not his style as much as us fans would like to see it.
he is more likely to sign a striker like Mputu from Africa than someone like Fabiano for example.

the thing that worries me is that wenger never spends big or spends that much time or effort in buying centre backs. I think wenger needs to break that cycle and bring in an experienced player who is proven at a high level and is not a high risk.

  158. just wondered why my comments were not getting through?

  159. Apparently the club has felt the need to respond to the negative media/fan reaction to AW’s comments about buying “only one experienced player”:

    http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=490312&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Wenger+-+I%27m+not+afraid+to+pay+out+big+money+this+summer

  160. Pablo-

That was then this is now.

An ordinary player like Malouda £15m, Pires was twice the player so instead of the £8m? in 2000 a player of his quality at 27 would have to be £25m region.

It is harder to sniff out those bargains now because everyone is trying to copy us.

The whole argument is that any new player in would have to be considerably better than the potential of what we already have.

Although it has not been AW style, it is not impossible that he would go for a major star, if that player obviously fitted the bill & we could afford him.

It is all about managing the budget sensibly whilst at the same time having a team that can compete.

If the team situation of 2004 happened today, with the new stadium approaching its 3rd season, with the money for Highbury Square coming in, the approach to rebuilding the team may have been undertaken entirely differently.

As it is the scheme to bring in the best young players is nearing fruition, so it makes no sense to give up on it now.

The normal 2/3 player close season tweaking is what is required & that is what I think will happen.

  161. needs 3 or 4 on the assumption that at least gilberto and probably flamini will go.

  162. hi, just wondered why my comments aren’t getting through?

if there is a reason an explanation would be appreciated

  163. I don’t think you can underestimate Malouda — it’s Grant who hasn’t been able to use him to his best abilities. Malouda’s a fine player, we could use him.

  164. just wondered why my comments were not getting through, just wanted to say good article!
    1979gooner

  165. one more reason to buy mobile strikers….to giv enf practice to senderos…who i feel i hard done by…he is nt that bad as is perceived to be.

  166. There IS a good defender in Senderos somewhere — not long ago we were all amazed at how we felt secure with Senderos on the pitch and had grown nervous with Kolo back instead. Senderos and Gallas worked quite well together during Kolo’s absence.

I just wish Arsenal would get a good defensive coach to whip Kolo, Gallas and Senderos into shape.

  167. MARCUS Senderos worked quite well because we played teams without speedy strikers during the time Kolo was away..

  168. Gazzap we had a chance with Woodgate though hes injury prone hes done well at Spurs. Djouru was very good at one time then a lack of games and injury have limited him, and Wengerspin wont take chances with him except in CC games.

Because there has been so much criticism of the squad strength on every Arsenal fan site AFC have been forced to make this PR statement, which is completely ambiguous, but keeps fans quiet

  169. wenger has a problem at centre back as buying a top quality one means the end of either gallas or toure which is a tough call for him.

  170. Sol

Djourou is only now ready to play after his injury. He has played 3 reserve games in the last couple of weeks. He simply hasn’t been available.

Denilson also played 50 minutes for the reserves yesterday.

Both could have been useful in recent weeks & feature in the coming games.

Woodgate is an excellent player but his injury record is appauling. Spurs have taken a real gamble considering Ledley King hardly ever plays either.

  171. Gazzap said:

“the thing that worries me is that wenger never spends big or spends that much time or effort in buying centre backs. I think wenger needs to break that cycle and bring in an experienced player who is proven at a high level and is not a high risk.”

The world is not exactly full of experienced centre backs that are proven at a high level.

I’d have thought Sol Campbell and William Gallas would have been considered in that category though.

Don’t know who you have in mind to buy now. If they’re not in the prem already then they will be risk. Maybe a risk worth taking, but still a risk.

If they haven’t got a strong record in Champions League or top-class international games, they’ll be a risk.

If they have a great record at the highest levels but they are nearing 30, they will be a risk.

So who is left that’s actually available and not a risk?

For my money, none of the usual suspects that get bandied about (Woodgate, Richards, Lescott etc) are a sure thing at all.

But if Arsene pulls someone that fits your bill out of the hat I’ll be as pleased as anyone.

  172. Solgooner, you really are a complete tosser. Most intelligent Arsenal supporters I know have given up reading or commenting on blog sites because of the low level of insight, arrogance and negativity of the contributors..and more than a modicum of childishness. Why would AFC respond to them? AW was asked the question directly by a hack. The question itself of course then generates a story which is echoed a thousand times in a million languages on Newsnow. News and football news especially is an illusion. Blog sites just contribute to the illusion.

  173. I said it many times at the start of the season (and I am no genius, believe me), summarised as:

    Great squad – great potential

Wenger a brilliant coach and finder of talent

Question marks about experience, physical fight and when the scrappy winter matches and nervy end of season games come

    Question marks about depth

I accepted his belief in his youth – he sees them every day but:

I said that we needed to add 3 players to this squad, which would not have made all the youngsters leave or the heavens fall.

3 players not necessarily that expensive

A centre back with spring and pace who’s only love was to defend touch tight, was a competitor and who stopped centre forwards scoring

A left winger with burning pace – because lesser teams could see Arsenal played too much through the centre and could put extra bodies in that area, safe that they would not be exposed on either flank. Someone like Ribery, even malouda just by being there would have freed up space centrally for Hleb

A tough mobile central midfielder who could mix it and play some ball – Wenger signed him in Diarra, then did not play him, then let him go

3 Points easily obvious for many of you (who also wrote about it) to see pre season, 3 points ignored by Wenger. Not rocket science.

    How do I feel now?
3 points still to be addressed and now add these 2:

    4. A direct pacey centre forward, which they now don’t have among their quartet. Ship out Bendter,

    5. A keeper – Almunia has done well but he doesn’t give the extra 10% as a keeper that the truly top ones do. He lacks prescence in his box – look at Van de Sar for a contrast

Managers like Ferguson constantly look to improve, are constantly looking for that extra 5% margin.

Wenger has now said that the difference between success and failure this season has been thin – look at points 1-3, Arsene for that wafer then difference…..

  174. the strange thing is that a lot of what has been wrong this year doesn’t seem rocket science but has been ignored by wenger, ie eboue picked week in week out, players played so regularly out of position, the lack of cover in key areas, full backs, wide players and centre midfield (after he sold diarra).

    it is very strange indeed.

  175. Well thats it then AlanG. All he needs to do is to appoint you as his advisor. Have you tried writing to him. You can write in English he has quite a good grasp of the language. Perhaps you could indicate which players he should buy whilst you are at it. Oh and if you have any thoughts on quadriceps in-balance….

  176. Its no good crying about all the players we could have had or we can never get, Aneilka, Woodgate, Ribery, Richards, Kaka, etc. lets hope that Wengerspin gets 2 or 3 players that will really strengthen the squad, and not jsut make PR statements.

  177. Maybe Dan it seems strange becuase you don’t know how to bring up a squad of youngsters to perform as almost the top team in England and arguably in the top 8 (or almost top 4) in Europe.

Maybe you have not been blessed with the ability to see the trajectory that we are on or the ‘big picture’ as some would describe it.

AW id an intelligent man astute, educated, dedicated and has the courage to stick to his convictions. He lives and breathes his job 24 hours a day.

But never mind you obviously know best. Perhaps you should join forces with AlanG and offer your services to AFC. You obviously have greater insight than they have. Of course they might find you a bit strange.

  178. Guys after much thought i agree with AW we only need one or two players provided that Rosicky solves his infury problems and that RVP can get over his injury nightmare.

My reasoning for this is Vela and Merida will be available next season and with Naser Barazite and Gibbs coming thorugh we have enough quality there to sustain a challenge this season, with that problem left wing problem no longer a problem.

I just hope we can keep the nucleus of the team together, by that i mean Ade, Cesc, Flamini, Hleb, Toure, Sagna, RVP and Clichy. Yes that means that Denilson, Eboue, Diaby (to some extent) and Gilberto are expendable of course these are only my observations.

In my opinion all we need is a good back up center back, Phil Jagielka if he were avilable would do the trick as he wont expect to get in the team every week.

Finally whilst the shit has been hitting the fan Walcott through all this is finally living up to the hype. I only wish we had more dynamic players like him. On that note I want to touch on Eboue who i think all can agree has not had the best of seasons, and initially few could argue with AW thoughts on converting him from right back to winger when in the past he looked best going foward. But in past few weeks why oh why wasn’t he dropped and Walcott tried as it was obvious he was having little impact in games.

OK that is my rant over with if only being a good manager was as easy as being good at FM (football manager)!

With all that said I still believe in AW, and few can disagree that we have had our more than fair share of bad luck this past couple of months.

Lets hope this bad luck is only for this season.

  179. Gazzap Do we need centre backs or someone who can teach them how to defend against set pieces etc?

  180. great article by the way

  181. Sol isn’t Keown on our coaching staff he knew how to defend, if ugly at times but defend none the less.

  182. Richards would cost too much money at least £10m, is that worth it and there are few out there in the class of ferdinand.

  183. frank, what did you think the decision to play toure and song on sunday? what do you think about playing eboue literally every game this season even though he has been far and away our worst player this year? we are all entitled to opinions, i know you have none other than whatever wenger does is perfect and always right but others, ie most fans don’t agree and are now becoming more and more vocal at long last asking the appropriatte questions. the message is obviously starting to hit home as seen but that completely lame article on arsenal.com today

  184. Instead of your sneering response Frank, perhaps you’d like to debate the points. I have great respect for Arsene but I don’t have a statue of him in my room. He has feet of clay.

I think he needs a strong right hand man or a David Dein character who will push to remind him it is not his club alone and act as devils advocate in terms of the philosophical/tactical arguments

  185. why frank would a manager make two positions weaker ie toure at right back and song at center back rather than one ie either hotye or eboue at right back and keeping toure at centre back. to me (and as you correctly state i realize I know nothing) that is such an unbelievabley starnge decision, especially after the liverpool game when toure was so badly exposed.

  186. Song was played on Sunday because Senderos had a mental and emotional breakdown after the Liverpool game last Tuesday.

Also, I think we’re all ignoring something very important that’s going on in AW’s head, and that is the context for his comments about “one experienced player”:

He is worried about keeping his players, at least his most important ones, after this enormously disappointing end-of-season.

I wish AW put more store in fan sentiment than he does but what he ALWAYS ALWAYS puts in front of everything else is his squad of players. He won’t criticize any of them publicly, and he takes a lot of heat for that.

I saw his comment as an admission of the fact that he is worried, tho he refuses to admit it publicly. The man looks shattered in the last week, it’s plain for all to see, his demeanor, his eyes, his voice. He has seen what his squad looks like close up after these last weeks, how devastated and exhausted they are. Apparently the dressing room after the Pool game last Tuesday was a pretty wretched sight.

His pride will not let him give into any confessions or self-criticisms in public — what he is most concerned about right now is the affect all this has had on his players.

Little has been said of Senderos’ emotional breakdown after the loss to Liverpool. You don’t think that has had an affect on the squad and AW?

I genuinely believe that AW’s main concern right now is not losing his core of players that he has worked so hard for years to develop, nurture and keep for years to come. There are rumblings about 2 of his key players already leaving: Flam and Hleb. Hleb has come out saying that the PL is a league where refs do not punish physical play that winds up in broken legs like Eduardo’s. And some of Cesc’s recent comments are not reassuring.

I think AW is worried that years of hard work in building a 3rd team may come to an abrupt end.
AW’s main priority as a manager has always been to instill confidence and belief in his players, so much so that he takes this too far at times. So that comment about “one experienced player” came out of that knee-jerk belief of his to tell his squad so soon after the loss to Pool that he maintains faith in them no matter what.

He gives this so much priority that he doesn’t realize sometimes that what his players need to hear is that he WILL strengthen the squad. But at that moment, so soon after a devastating loss, his main priority was to tell his squad that he had not lost faith in them. That’s why he’s avoided talk of spending cash to get new players.

  187. AlanG, the point is that I don’t I don’t wish to debate your points. I don’t think that you have an adequate grasp of the context to make sensible comments. That goes for Solgooner and Dan too. You do not keep niggling away at people you respect and support and so my conclusion is that you do not respect AW. That renders me speechless.

And Dan…how dare you state that your position is the same as most Arsenal fans. You are deluded!

  188. NYMarcus, you got all that from a few seconds of footage? What powers of observation you have..

  189. dan

What’s Arsne’s responsibility? To cater for Arsenal or his players? I think the guy who should leave is Senderos; to pave way for a new CB.

He’s so much full of mistakes and he’s falling backwards every year. He showed signs of development in 2006. In 2007 he was poor and this year he’s cost us vital games.

Arsene should offload Senderos before we get hurt once more in the coming season.

His good attitude should not compensate for his abysmal performance on the field of play. He cost us the CL games with POOl. No more chance for him; enough is enough.

  190. if senderos wasn’t up to it then play toure in his natural position (he is a crap right back) and play hoyte. you are missing the point. why make two positions weaker when you only need to make one weaker, senderos’s mental state is irrelevant.

he chose to have a weaker defence than needed to on the biggest game of the season.

  191. deluded!!!! look at every web site, every news article, every former arsenal player, every blog’s comments and there is not a shadow of doubt that the majority of people are asking serious questions. you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think fans are happy at the moment

  192. Frank, he said his priority is TO KEEP THE SQUAD TOGETHER before thinking about buying any new players. That’s the #1 thing on his mind.

  193. Thank God for some sanity Frank – it’s interesting that people like Dan seem to think they are in the majority – those away fans at Old Trafford on Sunday were telling Arsene and the team loud and clear that they still believe in them and that they respect the effort even though we fell short in the end. Even at Emirates, although not as vocal, the majority are still with the team, the boo-boys are in the minority. Supporting a team means supporting them through thick and thin.

NYmarcus, that is just an opinion, you know nothing more than the rest of us, so how you presume to know what the players need to be told as opposed to Arsene who knows them all individually is beyond me.

AlanG – you don’t know the nature of the Wenger/Dein partnership, so I don’t see how you can speculate on the latter’s role either.

  194. Actually Dan. The defence did well against Manu except for Gallas’ accident. Toure played well and in his RB position was able to tear them apart with forward runs. There was very little in that game and we lost because of a couple of unlucky incidents. We had ManU on the ropes for much of the game. A great game of football. Even better on second viewing without the nerves. Football at its best is becoming a real art form, not just about trophies. AFC are leading the way which is a real phenomenon.

I will leave you to get on with your myopic grizzling now.

  195. what the franks of the world fail to grasp is that players want to win things as well and if it is not at arsenal they will look else where. players don’t and won’t wait 5 years to see vela and merida develop, they want success and want to be sorrounded by players that will help them achieve their goals . how many more years do really think fabegas is going to hang around especially if helb and flamini go.

like it or not players want to see the club bringing in other top class players.

  196. Myopic grizzling, Dan.

  197. pass, i was talking about fans blogs etc in the cold light of day not during the match!!!! you i am sure look at as many sites as i do, and don’t tell me the majority of people as well all the ex players are saying the same things, asking the same questions and wanting the same solutions. i have no doubt you want exactly what i want, 4 new players and getting rid of the some of the dross, you just don’t say it. we all want the same thing some just state in harsher terms because they don’t have the arsene knows everything complex.

  198. frank the defence did ok, we still let in two goals and while watching you could see the second was coming. song made a few errors and got away with it, we still should have started with toure in the middle and doesn’t cahnge the principal of weakening two positions instead of one.

  199. I disagree with Dan

  200. I disagree with Dan

  201. Tomorrow is the bitching and moaning national day off.

  202. Dan,

Paul Davies, Liam Brady, Steve Bould, Martin Keown, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Ray Parlour …some of the ex-players who might disagree with your negative comments about AW and his philosophy. I could name all the supporters I know who disagree too but the list would be extremely long.

  203. what you think fans are happy with the squad etc, how our season imploded, how the manager has said he is interested in buying one player, how the manager keeps on playing eboue every game, how the mananger keeps buying 17 year olds, how the manager keeps throwing away cup competitions to concentrate on the PL and CL and end up with nothing again.

i don’t think people are asking him to be sacked but are showing displeasure at some of his decisons

  204. You need to read my comments if you want to know what I think, instead of repeating the same old mantra. You are like a one-sided coin.

  205. Frank and Dan jesus you are worse than Ethan!!!!!!!!!!!!

  206. Frank and Dan you guys are worse than Ethan

  207. any idea who the captain might be coming season…i dont c it to be gallas….at least

  208. may we r getting david villa as a summer present.

    http://gunnerblog.com/?p=962

  209. Passenal

Supporting a team means doing that even when times are bad, true. However, when a player is not good enough and there is an opportunity to make changes in the team and you say you want to keep your players even when not good, then there is a problem.

How many times some of us haven’t questioned Senderos ability to rise up to the tough times?

    He showed improvement in 2006

2007 we lost Carling Cup finals because of his mistakes. We lost at Ewood back in the semi-finals to Blackburn because of his mistakes. He was so poor against PSV in the CL.

This season, he lost Serville for us, scored against us with Villa, lost POOL CL game for us in both legs.

So how long do we keep players like Eboue, Senderos and Rosicky (who can’t play 20 games in all competitions a season)

Tell me how long? How long do we persist on Ade as the sole striker who has no power in his likes to shoot from afar when it demands? We should get one more striker. We also need a CB to fill the space for Senderos.

AW still maintains we should still keep average players hanging around and prevent better players to get in because of loyalty to them?

We’ve been without throphy for four seasons now. Why?

    Enough is enough.

  210. On another lighter note you can think of it this way. With all the Chel$ki, Man Ure, LPool’s spending, we are right up there with the best without having to overload the club with endless debts, in these days you will never be able to pay it back. It’s a cycle every club will go through, some years up, some years down regardless of how much money you spend.

The good thing is we are on the up in the last three years, and not on the down. With minor tweeks, and couple additions, we will be scary to a lot of teams including Man Ure and Chel$ki.

  211. Howard,

Sorry but the examples you quote about matches that Senderos ‘lost’ us do not bear scrutiny. For example, how did he cost us the first leg against Liverpool? Others were more culpable. He was not solely responsible for Sevilla. There were numerous poor performances that night after we had taken the lead. PSV?!? We could not even score without their assistance.

Carling Cup – yes, agreed. However, pinning defeats on one person is a dangerous game because all it does is highlight that you dislike him as a player which is fair enough. Nobody has to rate everyone.

Personally, I think he needs some loan time to regain confidence but more likely, to me anyway, is that he will leave in a couple of seasons time to resurrect his career.

    YW
