Death Knell Or Rebirth – Arsenal’s Title Challenge Will Be Decided Today

No point in kidding ourselves any longer, the season boils down to one game. Anything other than a win and the title will have eluded Arsene’s grasp for one more season; one more reason for some to indulge in some manager bashing without having any grasp whatsoever about the nature of his job.

The key thing is going to be picking the players up from the floor which is something that Emmanuel Adebayor believes Le Boss to be good at,

He has more experience than anyone here, and he knows the words to use so that we can come back on the pitch, be more successful and want it more

It is not just down to Wenger to do this though. The players themselves need to find their own motivation and I for one would be dismayed to find any of them taking to the pitch this afternoon without the desire to win.

Arsene has been a busy boy defending himself and the club against criticism over the past few days, his transfer policy being derided or Philippe Senderos from the poison pens of a hack. He took time out though to suggest that winning the title from this position would be perhaps his greatest achievement. I would disagree for I believe that is yet to come, namely that when he steps down as manager, he will be leaving the ship steering a steady course through the various trophies to come with a solid conveyor belt of youth to supplement the signings that any successor makes.

Manuel Almunia responded to the criticism he gets from Jens Lehmann very well indeed. The putdown’s have been one-sided so far with the German sticking his size nine’s firmly where they are not wanted. Almunia made it clear that Lehmann is not important to him and that the other ‘keepers at the club are superior to the German in any case. Oh, to be a fly on the wall when they meet up next…

Which will have been yesterday but Almunia is having the last laugh, retaining his place in the side. Indeed, I would be surprised if there are any changes other than Flamini and Diaby dropping out of the starting XI, replaced by Gilberto and van Persie. There has been a clamour for Walcott ahead of Eboue with the Ivorian dropping to Right Back and Toure moving back into the centre. That might happen but Arsene seemed to indicate otherwise in the week when he hinted that Theo had not yet achieved the consistency for a regular starting spot.

The other aspect which will influence his decision is that Arsenal cannot afford to lose the game if they are to raise a title challenge. This will be a key concern to Arsene and with a trio of attacking midfielders on the pitch, he will feel that the defence would be exposed to United’s attacking strength, i.e. down the flanks. With Eboue and Toure on the right, there is some protection to the back four. With Walcott, well, defending is not one of the lad’s greatest assets and in truth, to have him on the back foot is to waste his talent.

I expect Arsene to line-up with

Almunia; Toure, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy; Eboue, Fabregas, Gilberto, Hleb; van Persie, Adebayor

With a bench of

Lehmann, Song, Bendtner, Walcott, Hoyte

It will no doubt be a tight affair but Arsenal go into this game with their backs against the wall – you know you are in trouble when Ferguson deals out sympathy. Yet there are parallels with last season when the team were languishing in eleventh before victory at Old Trafford sparked a brief resurgence. A similar result would not go amiss this afternoon.

Enjoy the game wherever you are watching it. ‘til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. You keep including Eboue in the lineup, but isn’t he suspended?

  2. Never mind, I think it’s Diaby. Wish it was the other way around though.

  3. As Stewar Robson so aptly summed it up; Get the balcence between attack and defences.
I’m afraid AW loves to attack but is muddleheaded when it comes to defence.Today the final nail into Arsena’s coffin could be delivered and what then . Blame the ref?the linesman?
I think it all boils down to Aw who seems unable to digest the truth that the squad is too thin. Maybe he wants to buy but is afraid the prices will become ridiculous when he comes a calling.
As to rvp’s statement the crowd want to be entertained,he is half way there. The fans want results.
If Arsenal play pattern weaving or sexy soccer,be prepared for the ES to be half filled if the gunners continue to draw /get beaten despite having 20 shots on goal and drawing or worse getting mugged/beaten.

  4. I’ve just one comment – and it’s the only one any decent Gunner will make today. Whether you like Eboue. Or Adebayor. Or the youth policy….

COME ON YOU GUNNERS! DOWN THE MANCS!

  5. We wont win at OT but its been a valiant effort all season and I am proud of the team!

    UP THE GUNS

  6. I have never seen such stupid comments as the one’s sent to an English newspaper.

‘Arsenal must buck up now before they face MU otherwise they stand to lose everything. There is no need for beautiful football anymore. Once you enter the penalty box or withing 25 yards from the opponent’s goal mouth take a shot, as many shots as possible and try to win the game. If you lose to MU tonight, it may take as long as two years to recover.

I REALLY DO THINK ITS TIME FOR WENGER TO MOVE ON. HES OBVIOUSLY TOOK ARSENAL AS FAR AS HE CAN. HES A GREAT MANAGER HOWEVER EVEN GREAT MANAGERS CAN BECOME STAGNANT. I HEAR MARTIN JOLL’s STILL AVAILABLE.’

Now I know the football world is going mad, what absolute rubbish. Go you Gunners lets stick it up em

  7. Time for a title – next season or else Wenger is OUT – do not dounbt it we will get him out if he does not deliver nest season.

  8. Wenger’s pissy little girl attitude has gone far enough -we want some fucking muscle in the team, QUICK!

  9. You have really grasped the basics for the modern fan, have’nt you, El Thomo?

  10. Good article,YW.

Let’s hope we have to wait a few more years yet for your version of AW’s greatest achievment.

I will not be surprised if Song started with Gilberto today. We will need the high energy that he can provide to have plenty of the ball, & allow Cesc & Hleb more freedom.

RVP & Theo to win the game as impact subs.

    Come on u Gunners.

  11. going to be dodgy predicting any sort of results…

i just hope we up our heads and fight for it….
it has been more than a heartbreak the end of season…

but i still blve we can win this game…i really hope we do…something to cheer our lads on….common gunners….dont forget u RULE.

  12. Good piece Yogi, completely agree with Flint and OT.
For the life of me i dont know why some of these so called supporters come on this blog. All they do is spawn their doom and gloom about the season being over, and Arsene needs to deliver or we will get him out.
If these people havnt got anything constructive to say please go back to your original blog where your fellow moronic views will be met with the same idiotic brains similar to your own.

Ade is right if there is a manager who can pick us up its Arsene. We can win this match and if we do its certainly not over.
We are due some good fortune so why not this afternoon ?

    COME ON YOU GUNNERS !

  13. Yeah Massive day today and its a difficult one to predict. I think we should play people in their preferred positions where possible and go for

    Almunia

    Eboue, Toure, Gallas, Clichy
    Theo, Cesc, Gilberto, Hleb
    RVP, Ade

    Bench
    Fabianski, Song, Bendtner, Senderos, ?

Hopefully they will pick themselves up and maybe just maybe lady luck will flirt with us for a change

My Motivation for them would be to simply shove it back up the media and pundits jacksies.

Come On Arsenal, lets get back in this thing

  14. What is the point of having second tier players, and not having confidence for them tplay in the first team. Hoyte is a natural RB yet Wenger has no confidence in him, so play Tolo out of position, and brings in the disaster waiting to happen Senderos. I hope Flint is right and Song starts with Gilberto and really makes a name for himself.

The team need to play like they did at Pool for first 25 minutes, then we will have game on.

  15. I am still to be convinced by Song and feel that this is too big a game to take risks.

I know he had a great ANC and played well in the Carling Cup, but this is another level

I want to see him get a run of games to prove once and for all if he is good enough, and if we do lose today, I am sure that the likes of Song will get a run till the end of the Season

  16. if Walcott is to play more regularly, it should be in support of central striker with licence to roam. This uses his talents and doesn’t expose the flank he is meant to be defending.

I think we need two players minimum, a centre half and defensive midfielder to shield the back four. As well as Flamini as played he is not the answer. He could still be in the team. One of Arsene’s mistakes has been to try and fit too many creative players in the team and exposing the defence. Go back a few years, and we had Vieira, Petit and Parlour in the middle. Hleb, Rosicky and Walcott have obvious qualities but defending isn’t one of them.

We are not holding onto leads which Man U and Chelsea can do. If we had, we’d still be out in front, even if we only scored one goal like Man U earlier in the season

  17. Subjectively, I want Arsene to stay and win the title. However, objectively, I can see him resigning at the end of next season if he doesn’t win either the league or CL. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if he resigns at the end of this season. Before any rants, I want him to stay.

  18. Jamie if you watched the major football writers on Sky this morning, they all agreed that Arsene is there to stay and still building for the future, and that the lead story in today screws of the world by an alleged senior player was Bullshit and the senior players at AFC are Lehmann, Gilberto, and Gallas, and they pointed the finger at Jens as the basis of that crappy story, and if so Fabianski should be reserve behind Almunia for the rest of the season, but it does seem that Gallas wasnt happy being paired with Senderos, and when Kolo just touched Babel, Gallas was behind to cover him, and it was unecessaryy.

  19. I won’t dwell much on team selection today. I know that AW won’t include Song unless he thinks hard on the consequences of us losing today with Song on the bench.
I believe we need Song’s agility in air on corners and passing in middle to surprise people today.
Gilberto on his own, as the only DM, I think the pression will be too much to avoid conceding goals.

    My ideal team:

    Almunia.

    Eboue- Toure- Gallas- Clichy.

    Gilberto- Song.

    RVP- Fabregas- Hleb.

    Adebayor. 4-2-3-1.

Walcott to come in the 30′.

    Manu 1 – Arsenal 2.

    Come on Gunners!

  20. Total cr*p about about Wenger going & senior players revolting. We`ve lost 2 games all season in the league ! Typical media b*llocks.

Jamie is spot on with his comments on Walcott & creativity IMO. The change we need is just a small one in midfield & maybe Song is the man for the future.

As for today I`m sure we can give the Mancs a game & if we get some (overdue) luck we can beat them.

    Come On Arsenal !

  21. come on arsenal

  22. I would be very surprised of AW is not Arsenal’s manager in four years time. I would also be surprised if Arsenal have not won the Prem and Champions league at least once each in that time….though I cannot stand the England set up I would also be very surpirised if at least three of the best English players are not Arsenal squad members.

It would be a pleasant surprise if some of the so called supporters who comment on this site would just disappear or even better go and support another club.

  23. they will no doubt come all guns blazing….if we shy out of playing our natural attacking game we r done for…if we meet fire with fire we can get something frm the game…..

  24. i’m looking for a determined performance from the team. The manager and players have talked, now please back it up with the performance.
As for Eboue and Senderos, i hope they start from the bench!
Away with the Ferguson and the Mancs!!!

  25. Come on arsenal!!

  26. Frank
I hope you are right. My feeling with Wenger is that his departure will come out of the blue, at a moment of his choosing to retain his dignity. I agree, we are close but if we don’t win either the league or CL, that will be 5 years. Will he then think “that’s it”. Again, I hope you are right.

  27. Arsene must stay.

    Eboue must go. Simple as.

  28. am glad Senderos is not on the matchday squad. Good luck Song!

  29. All work, no goals yet. Lehmann’s been big for us. Song’s a tad shaky. We’ll see how he does in the first 13minutes of the 2nd half. If he’s still shaky I’d sub him for Walcott, move Toure back to central, and move Eboue to RB.

  30. that’s it folks, 3rd trophyless season is OFFICIALLY a reality. I’m really hoping next season we take the league & FA cup seriously!

  31. Death Knell. But goodness knows we could, should and would’ve won if we’d had just one confident/clinical striker on the pitch today. There isn’t one scapegoat – Adebayor, van Persie and Bendtner missed p*** easy chances today.

  32. A valiant effort very consistently showing our limitations as a team. Lots of work to do over the summer. The needs are pretty obvious. The shortcomings there for all to see. Kind of predictable at the end really….

  33. Aman,

Not sure I agree. United were lucky or Arsenal were unlucky. A draw would have been a fairer result. United changed the game through fresher resources at their disposal. Arsenal dropped a physical level. After watching that display, nothing is going to convince me that Man U are a better team than Arsenal.

In terms of the premiership the damage was already done because of the injuries to Van Persie, Rosicky and Eduardo and the bad refereeing decisions in the recent draws.

  34. It’s over once again. Next season?

So still this big boy Ade has no shots in his legs? It sums up the failure of Arsene for the last 3 seasons to look for a traditonal stronger striker.

How I missed TH14 today; he would have given us two goals for the chances thrown away by Adebayor.

Alfonso Alves could have been great for us and cheap but he went to Boro. Relying on a striker who scores only 6-7 yards away from the post? can’t shoot.

I pray that I won’t see the likes of Senderos and Eboue wearing Arsenal jersey again. Their contribution has been negative.

Few more matches for Song can solidify his position in the team.

  35. Once again no disgrace there, I thought we played quite well and maybe even shaded the 90 mins

I would like to add, I cant stand Jens but I thought he made some good saves today

and I am not convinced by Song, but I thought he did well.

Its been a rollercoaster ride but in someways I am pleased to get off, as the last 5 weeks have been painful.

Lets blood the youngsters now, and give Song, Barazite, Lansbury and Nordveilt a run out till the end of the season, there is nothing to play for, Champions League is pretty safe so why not and Theo must surely be a starter,

Oh to Oh to Be, Oh to Be a GOONER

Just please Man Ure I hope you win it as I hate everything Chelski stand for

  36. We have to stop blaming referees or bad luck. Champions rise above this. Twelve clean sheets this season! We can’t f***ing defend. Get Adams to sort the f***ers out. Clichy was the benchmark that they should all be aiming for, quietly getting on with the game and giving 100% in effort and concentration.

  37. Pat
I agree. At least United play football.

  38. could not hold a fukin dogs lead at the moment!!

what the fu** do we have to do to win? again we were the better team, the performance was good but we just cant get any kind of result.

and again it was our oppositions new recruit to inflict misery on us. where are our new recruits? fukin injured!!

    total b*ll***s.

  39. Phil, the game played out like most of our games this season:
Dominate possession, create chances, miss chances, ease off the gas, score a goal, carelessly concede within 7mins of scoring, fightback…..

Face it man, luck cannot be on the side of a flawed gameplan. It’s universal law. U have to learn from your mistakes. Our “mistake” is glaring, we are A SQUAD NOT BIG OR EXPERIENCED ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE KIND OF FANTASTIC FOOTBALL WE’VE CHOSEN TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!

    I know AW knows. We’ll wait & see…

  40. Players that should be offloaded:

    1. Senderos, he’s had his chances and shown that he’s not good enough. Thanks for his dedication, byebye

    2. Eboue, not good enough and poor ethics

    3. Leymann, too old and creates disunity

    4. Gilberto, old and slows the game and commits unnecessary fouls.

    5. Rosicky, too injury prone and can’t play 20 matches including all competitions a season.

    In

    1. Carlos vela, winger striker and on his way
    2. Young, strong, CB in the mould of Richards, Wheater(Boro) or Curtis Davies(Villa)
    3. Striker with pace and ability to shoot at 25 yards-Agbonlahor, Huntelaar or Benzema.
    4. A replacement for Gilberto will be any of Gibbs, Lansburi, Barazite or Randall.

  41. Considering how the Pool game ended today was a tremendous effort.

We actually made Man U look quite ordinary for most of the game & in Clichy had the man of the match by a country mile.

Other plusses were the composure of Song & a return to better form from Bert even if it may be his swansong.

Unforunately it`s the same old story that costs us – poor finishing and errors at the back. We`re so open at times it`s scary.

If Adams brings his boots he can have a game.

  42. I’ve been watching for 38 years and I’ve never known a season be so emotionally exhausting. F**k, it hurts

  43. Let us wish adieu to this season.

Now I really want to see some of our reserve team and youngsters get an outing in the remaining games. It will be a great accelerator to their development.

Despite all the pain we must remember that this team was never expected to compete for anything this year yet they mounted a valiant challenge. I am confident that this season be seen as final year in the development of the “Best club team ever in the history of English football”.

I concur with Arsene that the primary task over this summer will be to keep this bunch of exceptional players together as a team. Considering the quality and age of our players I am sure there will be numerous approaches by other clubs for our key players over the summer. We do not need any major changes in the preferred starting 11 but do need to add some quality depth so as to rotate key players, keep them fresh all season and compete on all fronts.

Finally after a nervy few months I am objectively able to look at the great prospects for the future (starting next season). It gives me goose bumps just looking forward to the scintillating football and Silverware that we will see at The Arsenal next season.

Bring on the next season!!!! Up the Arse!!!!!

  44. so what sort of season has this been then?

in my oppinion this team has great heart, we have played some great football and in wenger we have the right man but…

this has been in many ways one of our worst seasons!!

getting humiliated by the mancs in the fa cup, humiliated out of the cc by the yids , knocked out of the cl by the scouse and had our title challenge ended in slow motion by chelsea liverpool and then finally the mancs!

we have had a fukin bashing by all our closest and hated rivals. so like jamie said it fukin hurts.

  45. I agree with rs gooner

  46. rs gooner

Are you sure all the players measure up to quality? Do you think the skill level of Eboue, Gallas, Diaby and Senderos can lead us to something good?

We need a stronger CB similar to the role Campbell played for us. A striker who has power in his legs and can shoot from afar like TH14 not another Adebayor types with no shots in their big legs.

  47. Me too Frank,

    Well said RS

My only concern is the confirmation of my pre-season worry of no width, and we have constantly had to play people out of position in wide areas to compensate, the knock on effect of which led to Flamini and Fabreagas being over-played.

I dont like Eboue but it was Arsene’s experiment, and maybe there have been glimpses that it may have worked, unfortunately he does not help himself and the bad has outweighed the good. He is a great RB though and I think he should be retained to backup both the RB and RM positions but not be a 1st team regular

The future is bright though, we have surpassed the points of last season and have only lost 3 times, that is not bad, we just need to work on that winning mentality……I am sure it will come

  48. Howard,

As I said we need to add some quality players to the squad without getting rid of the current preferred starting 11. Diaby, Senderos and Eboue are not part the preferred starting 11.

As far as Ade is concerned I believe he still has a lot to offer to the team but needs competition from another experienced quality striker coming in and rotating with him and RVP/Eduardo. This will help account for injuries, temporary loss of form and fatigue and motivation.

As for Gallas I think he also will contribute to the squad by being used in rotation with kolo/a new quality CB.

  49. Anyways its too early for discussing these details. We will have a long summer to do just that.

  50. @ Howard: a striker with pace you say and then mention Klaas Jan Huntelar what is that some kiond of joke. Benzema is not going to leave lyon for love or money unless Lyon kick him out, they love him and are most definately not short of money – if by some mirace anyone can prise him away a minimum of 330M will be involved I am sure.

  51. patthegooner,

I completely agree with you. All we need is to add depth to the current core qualities of the team and some new dimensions i.e. a strong winger. I believe Arsene also sees this and will do the needful over the summer.

I am confident we will be unbeatable come next season.

    Up the Arse!!!!!

  52. Just a quick comment everyone. I agree with most of the above comments about how this season went, what we have to do next season, who to buy etc….. There is just one point id like to make about todays game though. Is it me or was it a blatant dive for the fee kick for Uniteds winner. Im sure that Evra took a dive on the edge of the box. Of course the Manc loving sky didnt replay it or thier commmentators even comment on it. Not an excuse for bad defending or throwing away a good Premiership posistion but it does highlight another peice of appaling bad luck we have had this season. Anyway, roll on summer. Lets all have a much needed break and hopefully be better prepared next season for a shout at some silverware. Come on you Gunners!

  53. Guys I feel devastated. After so much promise to end up with nothing is unbearable.

Please buy a quality center back, because Senderos is not good enough that much is certain and we can’t expect Gallas and Toure to play all games, speaking of which the african nations cup turned one of the best defenders in the EPL into an average one.

Let us hope that the hype surrounding Carlos Vela & Fran Merida come true ecause we desperately need some other creative talent in our team.

Finally i still believe AW almost did the impossible but for poor finishing, terrible luck and lapses in concentration at the back, we would not be where we are now.

  54. we can’t blame ref decisions for this one. Poor finishing, the inability to finish the chances created. For all Hleb’s marvelous play he rarely scores. Someone wrote on this blog recently to remember how Lunberg and Pires used to score from the wing/midfield positions. That’s gone. Hleb and Eboue (yes, Eboue!) may be more skilled and attractive footballers, but they don’t score. Henry used to miss a lot of chances too, but he was not usually the only scoring threat, the lack of scoring threats makes Abedayor’s dreadful shooting that much more visible and painful.

  55. I’m not sure about playing the young players yet, shouldn’t we be trying for 2nd place to avoid having to qualify for the champions league again? That’s 2 games that we could do without next season surely?

  56. I think you are correct Passenal we would be better trying to win all our games to see if we can get 2nd. That said if we do get a good lead in a game bringing on a couple of youngsters in ok. The team can now play with freedom.

  57. Hi All

You are damn right it hurts yesterday night(for me). But looking at the game we gave a better than good account of our selves and were the better team for most part of the game. We need a better CB for sure and it is the foundation of any winning team. Gallas/Toure have been found wanting at times and Senderos for all his heart is not good enough. unfortunately AW will always try to make do with Song and Djourou. Make Do for next season will not cut mustard as we can not be in transition for 4 seasons in a row. If it cost 25 million for a world class CB we need to want to pay for it.
I have been saying about balance of the team for a long time but as usual I wait for the end of the season to make the accusations. AW essentially on results alone has failed this season. There is no need to pussy foot about this. We did not win anything basis the decisions he has made ie going with youth , not buying better quality , trusting in Sendy and Eboue. and etc etc. Never mind the injuries, bad ref decisions , fatigue and etc. those are part and parcel of the terrain that is the EPL. As the manager if you want to win, you play your tactics and built your squad accordingly in anticipation.
I am harsh but in the cold light of day the hard fact is that we did not win anything and we especially AW need to learn from this season.

    - we need quality depth
    - we need balance.
    - better leadership all over the pitch.

I agree that we are almost there in this team but we need to win things and not just being almost there. I am sure AW the winner that he is will agree with me on the winning part. A nice bank balance is not remembered by anyone in football.

    Lets roll on next season.

Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

  58. yeah… better leadership for sure….and to make any sort of choice for the next season is gonna b tough…this season the obv choice was gilberto….wud have been gr8 i think….mite have really made the difference…but for next season…i dunno who shud be handed over the armband….i think best choice now is almunia….i really do..

I am glad tht song got a chance….and he is obviously quicker and stronger than senderos. clichy is a superman…wat stamina and concentration…..ronaldo did nothing in this match except his antics near the corner flag…for which he aptly got kicked by hoyte….missing sagna dearly….

I think thr is no chance we will end up 4th…so now is the chance t give all those “kids” (barazite, song and theo) a run.

BTW theo really needs to add a bit of ball skills to make himself more effective…..else he is too predictable.

  59. as for next season..which i will be eagerly waiting for,

we have to buy a gud strong central defender….and rotate gallas/toure with this guy.

song has to play in flamini’s role more often so tht flamini(or any other guy fr tht matter) doesnt take his place for granted…and doesnt demand wages like he is doing coz he knows he is the only guy who has played in tht role…and he will be too important to let go for arsene….i seriously feel faith shown by wenger on flamini is not being repayed to him.

    sell eboue….plzzzz plzzzzz..he is a waste.

bring back vela….vela and walcot on the wings have to play. fab and song/flamini(i dont care if he stays…never mind the services he has done…he is supposed to do it)

upfront..dudu wont be bak till long…and we dunno even in wat shape…so another buy i think is required….may b even 2..considering how injury prone RVP is…no problem getting extra cautious to provide some cover.

So thts it..i think 3 buys will have to be made…..along with gibbs and barazite coming to fill the bench would do well….dunno much abt hoyte and traore.

  60. i really disagree with all this criticism of Eboue. I don’t share this perspective at all. While I certainly think AW can bring in a better player at that position (e.g. one that, when in the box, has some ability to score) i’d still want to keep Eboue as a substitute and also Sagna’s backup.

  61. gunner4life

Flamini should take the 50+ being offered him ‘cos at that figure he’s collecting more than Cesc. If he insist on more, then Kolo can play there too and Denilson could be on the rise next season.

What we need is a big stronger CB who can pair with Gallas. As for Senderos, he shouldn’t be given a regular position and can go after his contract is over. The Cb’s to consider in the EPL are:

    1. Richards-his exploits are well known and continues to develop. I’m not sure if City will be prepared to release him. However, I think we can get him because he’s an Arsenal fan and will be prepared to come over. He’ll play CB and enable us to rotate Gallas,Song and Djourou with him. Kolo can move to the defensive mid where he started to replace Gilberto.

In Richards, we buy a good English player to soften the unfavourable official decisions and if successful can sell tons of shirts for us. He’s only 19/20 and if we spend 20+ on him, we’ll get pay back by heavy shirts sales. I’m told apart from Cesc, non of the players are bringing much money
by way of shirt sales. So good English players are good business too.

If we don’t get Richards; Curtis Davies of Villa or Wheater of Boro has similar competence and prospects.

    2. Vela is coming so the winger position comprising, Rosicky( if he can keep himself from the treatment table),Theo, Hleb and at times RvP will solve the problem there.

    3. We need a powerful shooting striker. Here again, I’ll consider Agbonlahor of Villa. He has pace and power and can shoots from afar. His goal tally is not that impressive in the EPl but his play suits the Arsenal and with our midfield, he will score tons and offer competition to Ade, Eduardo, Bendtner and RvP. His ability to shoot from from afar will complement that of Ade and Bendtner who can’t shoot but score only from 6-7 yards from goal.

Once again as an English, there will be financial benefits by way of shirt sales and match officials will soften their anti-Arsenal bias.

We may not take things serious but most of our predicament is that we don’t have English in the starting XI.

Their view? If Arsenal become successful with their foreign players based team; others will copy same and will pull the development of the English game further downwards.

However, it seems this important PR is not understood by most fans, mainly our foreign fans. Our foreign fans also don’t understand that a good English player can sell shirts to repay cost which is good business.

Only if we had bought Wright-Philips, we may not be crying for a winger. What about buying back Sidwell and the defensive midfield position. They are good players, better than some of the players we have. They would do well and sell a lot of shirts if we become successful.

We need to change our recruitment policy, because it solidifies the local fan base and sells shirts. Its good business.

According to Price Waterhouse, Chelsea, MANu and POOL sells more shirts than us mainly because of the few (2,3,4,5) good English players they have.

    A WORD TO THE WISE

  62. **Lehmann**

I think Wenger stuck it to Lehmann pretty good today by playing him in a crucial game. Lehmann said earlier the team would not lose if he was in it, well guess what…you did Lehmann. The irony is that Lehmann actually played good apart from the free kick were he was ill-positioned again!

It feels like cr*p to get out with nothing, but I think “we got what we need, not what we want”. We now know if we can really manage to win the title with the current squad or not. The obvious answer is not, but we gained much more experience we need, we got a good fight we needed to tell us we have to be stronger as a team and overcome the circumstance we face.

I personally feel the Eduardo effect on the results since the B’ham game was the decisive moment when we lost the title. Eduardo was on the up, clinical, scored a few goals, created for others and had a good work rate. Losing him meant RVP had to come on early and not really ready, exhausted Adebayor, and not up to the races yet Bendtner and Walcott.

I thin we will need a leader, as I don’t think we have one in Gallas. No disrespect for his contribution, I just personally don’t think he’s got what it takes.

I look forward to next year, and I will save myself more endless speculations.
