Attention is being turned without and within to the latest ‘Battle of Britain’ in the Champions League that commences on Wednesday, a full preview will be here tomorrow. To whet the appetites though, Kolo Toure has kicked it all off from the Arsenal point of view by taking the view that last season’s meetings have some relevance to the Quarter-Final tie,
Last season we played them four times (meeting in the FA and Carling Cups as well as the league) and we showed how strong we were – we beat them in three of those games. It is going to be really tight, we know that, but we have the quality and I think they will be scared to play against us. We need to show them that we have continued to improve and are even stronger than last season
It seems that the nasty side Kolo referred to in a recent interview is shining through but in a really nice way. Which is of course, no real surprise because whenever I have heard the man respond to questions, he seems to be a ‘bloody nice bloke’. I doubt that Liverpool are scared of playing us but they, like Arsenal, would have preferred Schalke or Fenerbahce. But the Football Gods deemed it necessary to ensure that at least one Premier League team shall visit Moscow this Spring and I have a hankering that it will be the winner of this tie.
Meanwhile it seems that Arsene is like a lot of us, scarred by the Parisian defeat to Barcelona,
When I look back, I think of the opportunity we had to score the second goal that would have killed off Barcelona. In fact we had two chances – the game was there to be taken
Oh, that it was. And for those of us with a wife of Catalan extraction, it was not a pleasant evening. Actually that is not fair on her as she was not the problem; the Barcelona-born Suegra was although even she recognised that more than thirty minutes of crowing was perhaps straining relations a tad, especially as she ‘officially’ supports Espanyol.
Talking of Spaniards, Fran Merida is featured in the May issue of FourFourTwo as one of ‘The Next Big Things‘ which if such ‘accolades’ have gone to his head, is not showing through. Comparisons with Fabregas are knocked firmly on the head by Merida himself,
I get compared to Cesc a lot, but as I’ve already said lots of times, we’re different. He’s already played in a World Cup and a Champions League final, and I’m just a kid who is learning the game. I hope I achieve what he has, but for now I’m taking it step by step
The true extent of his progress is put into perspective by Arsene, who at the same time also explains his transfer philosophy,
At the moment we play the young players so quickly in the reserve team – at 16 or 17 – that at 18 and 19 there is sometimes no challenge for them any more
Merida meanwhile looks set to be back at the club for next season as Arsene commented
He should be at Sociedad for six months
The issue of the magazine has its own take on the ‘100 Greatest Foreigners’ to take the stage in the English game and surprisingly, the Premier League’s marketing department have not managed to airbrush the preceding one hundred and five years out of the game. The former players listed are
- Nwankwo Kanu (#91)
- Emmanuel Petit (#55)
- Marc Overmars (#51)
- Anders Limpar (#42)
- Nicolas Anelka (#37)
- Freddie Ljungberg (#33)
- Robert Pires (#19)
- Patrick Vieira (#10)
- Thierry Henry (#3)
- Dennis Bergkamp (#2)
Their ‘Top Of The Pops’ was Eric Cantona and that should not be dismissed lightly for I suspect that you could put one hundred people in a room and find them equally split over the order of those three. What was pleasing though was the recognition of Anders Limpar; an infuriating player at times but for two reasons, he stands out. Firstly, he was a beacon of light in the George Graham era, something he shared with David Rocastle. More importantly, he was one of the most skilful players ever to don the red and white of the club. And the atrocious away kits of the that time as well. Those old enough to remember will (sort of) understand when I say that Limpar genuinely stands as a peer of Robert Pires, save for the fact that the Frenchman was more consistent but that has as much to do with the manner of Arsenal’s play than anything else. You might have to trust me when I say that had Arsene ever managed to get hold of Limpar in his prime, well, you would have been positively drooling over him. Curiously enough though, there was no mention of John Jensen in this ‘Hall of Fame’. Every time I mention him, I can still see the ball curling into the net in front of the North Bank. It was summed up though when his only Arsenal goal came in a 1 – 3 defeat at home to QPR…Oh, and Cesc was #46
’til Tomorrow.

Patrick Vieira at #10, what a joke! The guy revloutionised central midfield players in this country, everyone then wanted to sign ‘the new Vieira’.
Interested to see where Fran Merida fits in next season, hope he gets a chance along with Barazite.

I’ve seen Cantona play, but to me Th14 is the best, most entertaining and exciting player to ever grace the EPL.
I think Cantona just gets it because he played for the Mancs.

Hey, Dont get to angry over the list – it is subjective to whoever compiled it!
Anders Limpar – what a legend – a great, great player of that there is no doubt.
And even more of a legend for the sneaky punch in the face of Brian McClair during the brawlat Old Trafford – Brilliant!

Have to dismiss cantona as no.1, henry was equally good, over a longer period.
Saw arsenal.com had two interviews with gallas and toure, and both said something about what Arsene said halftime at the reebook. Anyone know what he said? (im obviously not a subscriber of arsenal online

Gooner….this is an earlier post from NYmarcus who saw the interviews:
” G4E, yes, I saw Kolo’s interview and also heard Gallas (whose interview is audio only).
Basically both of them said that AW’s half time talk was really important because it lifted them up, convinced them they could go back and win the game. He just drummed it into them not to give up. It sounds so simple but it works. The rest of what he said was just how down they were after being 2-0 down with one man less, how they worked so hard to get back into the game.
Gallas sounded exhausted and said basically the same things, adding that the substitions were very important as well. He also said he needed to go spend time with his family and kids and relax a bit after the game”

Looking 4wrd to the Liverpool encounters. It helps that we have 2 games at home n know their style of play in some respects.Liverpool will play 4 5 1 defend for the lives looking to get an away goal on the break. We have to remain calm and ressurect the spirit of Milan for our European nights. Anyway we thrive in these big game occasions. A victory would be good to put pressure on Liverpool at Anfield
It is unfortunate we have to meet another EPL team but it could have easily been Man U or Chelski.I really dont think there are any mug teams left n we r seriously underestimating Roma, Schalke n Fernabache they are a better calibre team to Olympiacos . Man U n Chelski will have their work cut out too.Do u remember Porto, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Monaco. Anything can happen in this competition. We just have to remain composed and dig deep for an imense performance.TH14 is the greatest by the way.Go on the Arsenal!

being so utterly down and out at 2-0 with 10 men actually worked in our favour. the psychology of the game switched round. At the start it was Arsenal who were expected to win, at that point it was Bolton who were expected to. Just shows you what pressure can do to a team.
when Bolton tired and we got fresh legs on, the momentum switched round. Of course had we not got that first goal, its unlikely we would have got the second and third. the first goal gives you belief and energy. When gallas scored THAT was the turning point of the game.
You do wonder what playing with 10 men for 60 mins will do for fatigue. I hope the boys have recovered sufficiently to play out of their skins tomorrow.

absolutely spot on gazzap…
am amazed at the energy levels of flamini, clihy esp, fab and ade…
compare to manu, chelsea and the rotated squad of liverpool….mayb vidic wud come close…or maybe joe cole…but its amazing really.
for tommorrow’s match…it will be a miracle if we come back after letting an away goal in…so i think we will also switch to 4-4-1-1..
toure-senderos-gallas-clichy
eboue-fab-flamini-hleb
RVP
Ade
i think senderos arial presence will have a say with gallas and toure going for 2nd ball.
I also think walcott will get a run in for a lesser time this time around…maybe 20 mins…in place of hleb/eboue (hleb most prolly)
If we score…it will be a very big advantage….but…3games in succession is a fu*kin joke….what a fu**in draw!!!!!!!

gunner4life, your team is probably what wenger will do despite a lot of us wanting to see walcott. there is still the suggestion that he can only make a telling impact when coming on for half an hour.
no one can know whether thats true because we have not see enough of Theo starting games for us. if that was the selection, I think we’d be OK.
I think RVP has been dropping quite deep since his return from injury. sometimes he is right back there defending on the edge of our box. I like to see that. it gives RVP another dimension and makes him more useful for wenger.

DB10 is #1 by a mile.
He’s also one of the three greatest players ever to have played in mid-90s (IMHO). The other being, Zidane, and Ronaldo.
IMO, the skill involved in his goals against Leicester, Newcastle and Argentina, is greater than Zidane’s touch, skill, and movement against La Coruna, and Norway.
And, Holland were better than France in WC98 EU00, and better than Denmark in EU92 in terms of flair attacking football with the Iceman at his best. When Schmeichel inspired Danes celebrated, I was gutted for my then favorite Van basten missed a penalty also. Btw, I rate DB more than Van Basten.
Ironically, an unlucky and underrated player still. a) Fear of flying, and b) No Euro, world cup and champions league medals.

i don’t understand how anyone can pick an arsenal team with eboue as right midfield, how many times do you have to see how utterly hopeless he is there. he is a complete waste of space. unfortunately wenger agrees and we will see him once again doing nothing, falling over and embarressing our good name. what does walcott have to do to play!!!!! this impact sub rubbish is ridiculous the guy is old enough and good enough to be starting games, why not have that impact for 70/80 minutes not 20? he is the only player with the pace and width we need and yert we see him permantly overlooked for diaby and eboue on the wings, i find it completely absurd, but what do i know.
By: dan on April 1, 2008
at 1:24 pm
I dont rate Eboue at all, but I think wenger will see the need to play tight defensively and think that Eboue can do that job as a winger with a defender behind him (Toure). clearly thats wenger’s call, but I would not be at all surprised to see him do it.
walcott should be coming on earlier though. I think 50 or 55 mins ie just after half time is fine. if he only plays the last 20 mins, by the time the final whistle goes he still has got loads of energy to burn.
By: gazzap on April 1, 2008
at 1:31 pm
eboue can not even defend, which is why he bought sagna . he is hopeless, he plays him every game (bar this weekened thankfully) and has nothing to do with needing him defensively as he plays all the games not just champions league games. i don’t normally single out players but him on the right and diaby on the left have been proven time and time again to be a complete waste of time. all the while we have theo who has been getting better and better. we are in a position where goals are very hard to come by and why on earth wouldn’t you play walcott who scores and creates goals something neither diaby or eboue ever do!!!!! ( i know diaby has scored a couple but you know what i mean)

#2 – Henry

Henry had more pace. Improved his finishing. Incredibly improved under AW.
DB has more skill, a better passer, and a vision thats unsurpassed in modern game. Even a simple pass looks graceful with complete control! It looks Awesome in fact! He’s a prototype of a “total” football player. don’t forget that he was a great finisher and changed his game to suit “the hole” and the team! Above all, Scores beautiful goals, and sets up orgasmic assists!

Good to see other Limpar fans on here, I named my son Anders, enough said!
Personally, I think the most influential foreign player, and our most influential foreign player, is without question, Vieira. Patrick ruled the Premier League with a rod of iron, from his first day, to near on his last. He guaranteed success. In his prime, he stood out from all opponents (and our own players) like a colossus amongst drawfs. He gave us a decade of success. Bergkamp was different, he ruled our hearts, and for many of us, including myself, will be our favourite player, but that’s different to effectiveness. Without Vieira Wenger may have failed, Bergkamp may never have had any success. Vieira was the foundation on which many careers were built, Wenger included.

Yogi i’m so pleased you mentioned Anders Limpar as one of the most skilful players ever to don the shirt.
Fantastic ability, passed and shot with both feet (oh if every player could do the same!) lightning pace and the scorer of many a spectactular goal, he is one of my favourite all time Arsenal players.
It was a great shame he fell out with George Graham which led him to exit the club for Everton where he never really hit the same heights.
Ironically the present team could do with someone like him, a super quick goal scoring winger which would give us another option.
I hope Arsene gets someone of the same ilk in the summer – here’s hoping !

Dan, me biased? Never!
What I don’t understand is what has happened to Denilson. We heard about injuries months ago but since then there’s been no info on that at all. Every time reporters ask Arsene about injuries for the upcoming game, he mentions the usual names, and never Denilson. He’s been on the bench a few times, but that’s it. It’s as if he doesn’t even exist as an Arsenal player anymore.

Really nice to see the blog back on top form over the last few days, great work everybody concerned.
It really takes the sting out of my day to come home and read Yogi’s thoughtful prose, and when its followed up by some sensible considered discussion it completes the unwinding process perfectly.
Thanks everyone.
p.s Anders was a legend, but I always held Marwood in higher esteem – probably because he was the guy with the flair when I first started watching The Arsenal. Its sad both players lost so much through injury. Nonetheless both players were the difference during the 89 & 91 Championships.

Not surprised dan, but no bad luck to them at all…not even an injury to put someone out for just 3-4 games? something to slow them down a little?
Or did we get all the bad luck for every one else?
By: Gunner4Ever on April 1, 2008

Seems like every f–king team on the planet just bends over to Utd. Utd were crap in the first half, did absolutely nothing, roma dominated, and then out of the blue in a set piece, roma forget to defend, and Cronaldo runs like mad into the penalty box and heads the ball into the net. Great goal but geezus it would be nice for once to see Utd beaten when they actually deserve to be. And judging by their first half performance, they definitely deserve to be beaten.

G4E, they have been fortunate with injuries, but credit where credit is due they are best team in england and europe for that matter by quite a way. when a team wins the league and then still goes and buys anderson, hargreaves, nani and tevez you know that they are going to be very hard to catch. our manager should learn something from theirs, red nose just steps it up time and time again not afraid to spend the money required to bring in the players he wants. had we shown such guts then 17m for a ribery for example could have made a huge difference.
i find it very demoralizing to be honest.

Can anyone else explain how come Ronaldo is not experiencing burn out, he seems to have played a lot for them this season but still looks the mutts nutts and seems to be as fit as he was leaving pre-season training, ultimately I think he is the difference between us and them
I just hope Real Madrid get another freebie loan off their council and buy him for 60 million
Flicked between that and the Barca game, they were awful but still got the win, Henry looks un-happy, although you can see he is trying to impress, anyone else see the Seattle Rumours, I think that would suit him, I think he needs to be the main man and Seattle will certainly give him that. lets face it he will only ever return to Arsenal upstairs
Oh and if he does, I will go out there for his debut, Seattle is a great night out
Good call on Limpar Earlier, I loved Limpar

pat,
he is not the difference between them and us. They have a much better squad than we do. their options in midfield especially are infinately better than ours, they have a better keeper, stronger defence and in fact better forwards as well. if they lost ronaldo and rooney for a while they would struggle but short term losses of them do not effect them.
let’s face it we have eboue and diaby again tomorrow night, enough said!!!!

Patthe, hasn’t Fergie rotated Ronaldo enuf to keep him fresh? Hasn’t he played fewer games than Cesc and Flamini? It’s not only Henry who looks unhappy, everyone at Barca looks unhappy.

barca are rubbish, utd will slaughter them. they got such an easy draw.
fergie has rotated him and is able to with the options he has. he also happens to be one of those guys who never gets injured which is a surprise as most people try and kick the crap out of him.

Nope just checked it
Ronaldo 37 and 2 as a sub
Cesc 37 and 2 as a sub
Flamini 36 and 1 as a sub
and Dan, all I meant was if we had Ronaldo we would be top, and if we both didnt we would be top
Apart from him, I dont think they are a lot stronger at all. If you put a best 11 out of both I would go for
Gk Van Der Sar
LB Clichy
CB Gallas
CB Vidic
RB Sagna
LW Ronaldo
CM Cesc
CM Flamini
RW Hleb
FW Tevez
FW Van Persie
Bench
1) Lehmann
2) Rooney
3) Adebayor
4) Nani
5) Ferdinand

Let me get this right, Dan. Mancs have got a better goalie than Arsenal, they’ve got a better defence, better midfielders and better forwards. They’ve also got a far deeper squad. Yet a month ago, before Eduardo’s injury and our bad run, we were 5 points clear?!? Bit odd isn’t it. Maybe’s your analysis is a bit flawed…
Incidentally, you (and NYmarcus)should check Mancs results when Ronaldo HASN’T been playing – they’re not exactly impressive! Hence he HASN’T been rotated much. (Rooney’s missed more, and Mancs have lost games when he’s been out.) Ronaldo’s played 38 games so far – Fab’s played 37 + 2 as sub. That Ronaldo is still looking so fresh is undoubtedly irritating
. I really don’t like him but he’s playing blinding at the moment – undoubtedly the main difference between us and them. Imagine if Alex could score 20+ goals…
By: DaveyB on April 1, 2008

Sorry Cesc and Ronaldo have actually both played 39 each with 2 sub appearances each

Thanks Pat. I’ve followed Yogi’s excellent blog for quite a time now, hadn’t actually posted before. But couldn’t let these claims go without comment
. Tel #1 for me, btw.
As for tomorrow, I expect Arsene to go with Eboue due to his better defensive qualities – Theo really is a liability defensively, even though it’s great to see him improving going forward. Eboue is bloody irritating, but does bring some qualities even if some people are too blind to see it…

I would go with eboue too but only because if we play theo from the start there is no potential game changer on the bench with rosicky and eduardo out
Eboue is more defensive but I can’t help cringing everytime he tackles and we need to keep discipline in both legs to get through
I would also bring Jens back
