To start off with today, a worthy cause to make you aware of. Rocky 7 has been set-up to raise funds in memory of David Rocastle, the seventh anniversary of whose untimely death falls on Monday; his passing a reminder of the fragility of life.. Amongst Arsenal supporters over a certain age, Rocastle holds a special place in our hearts. All of us have our favourite memories of the player or a favourite goal. I think the latter will be a toss-up between two in the League Cup, either in the semi-final replay in 1987 at White Hart Lane or two seasons later at Anfield, a cracking twenty yard strike that left Grobelaar grasping at air. T-shirts have been produced and profits will go to Treehouse, Arsenal’s chosen charity for 2008-09 season.
So to the other matters which surround the club. Firstly, Arsene has stoutly defended William Gallas, which has surprised some people for reasons that I do not understand. Arsene said,
He has my full support and my full backing. I am completely behind him and behind the team as well. People have questioned him but you still have the same William Gallas. And the same people said it was a good choice to make him captain when we were five points ahead
His defence of his compatriot is two-fold; he has never to the best of my knowledge openly criticised a player in the past and secondly, this season’s mantra has been ‘I have faith in the squad’ and to remove the captaincy from Gallas would contradict that view and undermine Arsene, with the squad looking at him and in my view, rightly questioning what he has said previously. Misquoting and unsubstantiated comment is rife in this internet-age – yes I am aware of my own culpability – which Arsene highlighted,
I believe that the article where Theo was criticised was from an article made in GQ about Wayne Rooney. I read what William said in this article [about Theo] and I agree completely with him. He said Walcott could be the next Wayne Rooney, but he has to work. What is wrong with that? You want, at 18 years of age, not to work? I read it really carefully; it didn’t say anything wrong in that. After the way it has been turned, yes. But if you want to win the World Cup you have to accept that your players are highly exposed and you have to accept that you have to work. Is it an insult to say somebody has to work? I don’t think so
Such deliberations in his own mind suggest that Arsene was right to confirm he has no political ambitions although the diplomatic core should not be ruled out. After all, if one of the Spice Girls can be a UN Ambassador…
Back to the captaincy. For those who hark back to a golden age with Tony Adams at the helm on the pitch, let us not forget the tribulations that he endured; the experiences that made him the captain that he was. Let us not be too quick to judge, too harsh in our assessments. So, gentlemen of the media, can we let the matter drop?
And we move on today’s game at The Reebok. In days of old, one might have considered this to be the meeting of The Good and The Bad (as well as The Ugly but that was a trio and Sam Allardyce has now departed the scene). Bolton have to win to aid their fight for survival whilst Arsenal need to do the same to prove Avram Grant right and show they are not out of the title race. There will be changes to the Arsenal team today with the main one being Arsene’s decision to rest Emmanuel Adebayor ahead of the Liverpool matches. The decision was to rest; not drop permanently as some would hope, merely a rest, acknowledging the hard work that the Togolese international has put in so far this season. How much of a rest remains to be seen and depends on the shuffling of the pack. Bendtner, fresh from his goal in midweek – Gunnerblog has a link to it will no doubt start to add a bit of height up front to make the Bolton defence feel right at home. With Sagna out for three weeks which for todays encounter leaves the door open for either Theo Walcott or Justin Hoyte. Personally, I would leave Walcott on the bench as a late replacement for van Persie and have Hoyte / Eboue down the right.
In the rest of the midfield, I would expect no further changes. Defence though will be under the microscope and Kolo Toure believes the problems can be solved. That they certainly can; concentrate for ninety minutes and defend from the front.
I would expect the team to be
Almunia; Hoyte, Toure, Gallas, Clichy; Eboue, Fabregas, Flamini, Hleb; Bendtner, van Persie
With a bench of
Lehmann, Senderos, Gilberto, Diaby, Walcott
As much as the team need a win to keep the dimmed flame of their title hopes alive, they need the confidence of a clean sheet ahead of the home leg against Liverpool. Today is an excellent chance to achieve both of those objectives.
Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ‘til Tomorrow.

rather than put hoyte as a starter, and eboue as our right midfield, I think wenger will introduce Diaby as left winger and Hleb on the right, Eboue will then be drop as right back.

i reckon Hleb/Eboue works pretty well considering what we have available

I agree, I’d prefer to see Eboue as right back, or Toure to the right with big Phil back at centre back,
I have a sneaking feeling big Phil will play today given Bolton’s aerial threat.

I agree also. Eboue is certainly not the best defender around but i don’t see Hoyte as a necessarily more defensively sound choice (plus it would take something away from us going forward).

The confidence of a clean sheet?
get a grip ! what we need is GOALS in the back of the net ! (dont you read the papers what we are going through is the worst SCORING drought in 9 years? )
In large part to ades poor form ! If you refuse to write it FINE ! But dont be so coy to mimic arsene’s Quote .. As we all know it simply isnt true , and things need to be changed up front because it isnt working !!!!!!!!!
He is being DROPED due to poor form and hopefully others will shine and we will see how long a 24 year old with no injuries needs to be RESTED ! .. what a joke !
The confidence of a clean sheet?
Defense has little to do when your trying to defend against one of the top strikers in the world ! Your going to let some in , just ask anyone who’s ever marked TH14 ! (but youve forgot whats that like!)
your bet is hoyte to start ? Another excellent bit of deductive reasoning ?! Yes we shall see ..
Jens was rested after letting 2 goals in ..
As for the resting theory , Our players average 21-22 years of age ! Its all bollocks that anyone who isnt carrying an injury needs a rest ! They are young and if thats one thing positive about this squad is that no young player needs a rest !
What a excellent post .. NOT !

I was thinking maybe let lose Theo for the rest of the season in the league. Its time for the lad to get a run in the side to build his confidence and game physique. Himself and Hleb can easily swap sides throughout the game.
Almunia
Toure – Senderos – Gallas (c) – Clichy
Walcott – Fabregas – Flamini – Hleb
Bendtner – van Persie

“Defense has little to do when your trying to defend against one of the top strikers in the world !”
I would have thought a good defense would be the main goal here no ? Stop a top striker from scoring and hence win the fucking game ? Maybe i have this football lark all wrong….

Once again Yogi your pieces are brilliantly written, with such auditory verve. Absolutely admirable.
Please allow me to quote you on your last post: “As to Arsenal being impregnable at the club”, a freudian slip perhaps, indicative of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger’s synonimity.
I agree.
Keep up the good work, im proud to have such a brilliant mind, commentating on Arsenal affairs.

In the world of the insane, 24 year olds don’t need rest. They’re somehow at this age are just machines, goal scoring machines in this case. For example at the age of 22-24, Thierry Henry the goal scoring machine, was never rested during CC and even some FA games. Mind you those days we were playing 4-4-2, so Thierry did have someone to work with, not killing himself in many a 4-5-1 games.
Get a freaking life, or NOT.

almunia
eboue-toure-gallas-clichy
walcott-fabregas-flamini-diaby
bendtner-vanpersie
i have a feeling wenger will rest hleb aswell today… he hasnt been playing that well lately and plus coz rosicky has been out hleb has played almost every match and he played 90 mins for belarus this week…. theo and diaby should get the nod.
im goin for 1-0 arsenal with walott or vanpersie getting the winner

well done on your starting 11 ,at least someone has some insight to what will happen tonight !
It makes sense to start theo , the next 7 games are just a training exercise anyhow . Its a mammoth ask to expect Man U to lose 3 games out of 7 .. Its all about 2nd place now .. and even that looks sketchy(but not unrealistic)
as chevski definitely have the fixtures in there favor.

TH 14 was never rested when he was scoring goals and fit , you give me an exsample oh great POOH BAR of the SOCCER world !
yes if you get paid 50k + a week to play 90 minutes YOU DO IT !… Yes ask any pundit .. The excuse that a 24 year old UNINJURED player needs a rest is just a smoke screen for POOR FORM !..
But thats what i expect coming from you !
No real reasoning just pure arrogance, If you use the small part of your brain called a memory jens was RESTED too ! . Also about 100 000 arsenal fans in the past 3 weeks have been calling for ade to be droped and try another arrangement upfront !
You are rude , pathetic , argumentative , and arrogant G4E .. im not going to put up with you constantly picking on me ! when so many others are singing a similar song to me ! Try picking on someone else ,I thought you might have a bit of humility left in you ,to not draw attention to all your false claims you’ve been bragging about in the past .Your constant grinding and nagging of me !! is what is putting people off ! You are the instigator EVERY time , as you would prefer to lay down personal attacks ! like
In the world of the insane,
only insane 1 is you ! How right have you been !?

You shout the loudest with no knowledge to back you up !
pathetic !

I wouldnt call it a training exercise. we should still be aiming to win all our remaining games. Fair enough the title is out of our hands but just in case theres a slipup we need to be in the mix.
Next season Theo will ba used more as a striker i feel but its no harm getting the lad toughened up and ready for more games next season either.
Same might be said for giving Diaby a central midfield attacking role. Start with Cesc and if we are in control then put Diaby in there in his place.

there is a lot of rumors that diaby wont be around much longer ,he wants to be playing every week and there is a good chance he will go to Italy in the off season . With vela coming into the mix and hopefully flamini re-signing i cant see much space for diaby to really get a break ! therefore giving diaby a run and experience might not gel well into wengers plans for next season ..
Im sure we will see him again .. you know arsene
he will want to ensure his decision to sell diaby is justified .. But in all honesty unless arsene loans about about 4 or 5 players next season we might very well see a basement youth player sale happen shortly !

Ade wont play so no need to gloss over it for hours for 2day’s game
i for once would like to see Theo play alongside the Dutch man
i think that both Nik and Ade are atypical Arsenal strikers
i am frankly not convinced about Bendtner’ s ability to have what it takes to play for the Arse.. nor do İ like his attitude
Ade is good enough to play for us, except that his game can be developed and therefore should he sometimes be substituted and rested
which brings us back to the argument as to whether current squad is big enough
and we know the answer to this one
i would also like to see Diaby start in midfield, but then again hope is eternal

disagree completely with the slightest idea that hoyte shud be played….sorry YW…
u know, even if hoyte plays and puts up a man of match performance i wud say it was a pathetic choice to play him after cc and fa cup debacles….
best choice toure rite back…senderos and gallas in center…best possible option…
logically thinking hoyte is by no meqns sagna…and the crosses that sagna prevented from coming in..will now appear all of a sudden…
even if we r too tired to think about this one….simply statistically….if u just count numbers..like total minutes of playing time for the back four…or total percentage of let ins to opps in those playing minutes…hoyte will look more of school boyish in comparision to senderos..
plz let us not go by hunches..let us go by sane thinking….
as for diaby..he is too lazy to play any type of pacy games…the odd goals he scored(those “awesome” ones) were just because they came as surprise to opp rather than his own …not so terriffic abilities…hope denilson gets his chance…and vela fits in the winger role nicely….
yes without further signings it wont be possible for us to challenge for title next season…..no way

i agree totally .
but whilst i have more of a passion than any man alive that we sign some experience i just cant help but notice the amount of players that need to play next season or they will be deemed as failures , which will dent wengers ego ..
denilson , hoyte,gibbs,traore ,vela,diaby(?)Walcott,bendtner,the 2 swiss boys,
the list is endless ..
I only hope that he buys 1 MEGA class striker
to partner RVP .. and more of an immediate sub for alumina .
jens and gilberto need to go .. im sure the wages are too high for arsenes liking … And im sure they will get a little push come the end of the season ..
I agree with you 110% about several class players needed to mount a title challenge next season but i think as BB said
hope is eternal

I think 1979 gooner is correct. I think Toure on the right big Phil in, and i would drop cesc to rest him. Diaby in the middle i think he plays well in the middle. Almunia
Toure senderos Gallas Clichey
Eboue Diaby Flammini Hleb
Bendtner RVP
I think this team can win the game, ideally Hleb and clichy need a rest, luckily LFC play a big game with Everton, otherwise they would rest at least 4 players giving them a competitive edge. However, i believe that we have been better than Liverpool for 15 years, 1 season above us in that time is not a team we should fear at all, fuck anfield. COME ON THE GUNNERS
By: UPYOURARSEnal on March 29, 2008
at 11:08 am
Anyways.
I would like to see Walcott having the chance to play with RVP up front, but knowing how light Walcott can be, I think Bendtner is a better option against big & physical defenders.
Unless and until Bolton comes all out attack on us, Walcott will not have a chance of running in empty spaces behind their defenses. So, I still think he would be better as a sub especially if we scored and they start to open up.
This again is one of those games, that if we concede first would make it very difficult for us chasing the game and the equalizer and I hope this will not be the case today.
The other option is to go for broke, and play Eboue as right back and start with Walcott in right midfield and that proved very dangerous in the past as Eboue will not be protected at all.
I still think after what Wenger said about Gallas and defense from the Chelski’ game, he will stick with them in the middle. Even though I think Senderos is better in the air, in a game that Bolton might and probably will resort to the high balls in our box.
In any case, I hope we win.

yes i said theo and RVP was the only way forward this season and maybe if we did it V’s chelsea we would have looked more of a threat upfront.. in fact ill go as far as saying WE 100% would of been more effective !
Whilst i agree with you on bendtner, he still has hope only being 19 ! Id like to see him go on a full season loan next season to a lower end P.L club to get some much needed playing time .. Also it could be the gauge that will make him as a player.
I think both Theo and bendtner didnt really progress much this season with wengers inability to rotate .Which i think is key if you are going to adopt this youthful collection of HOPEFULS then you need to rotate them or they will only stagnate
into average players . What makes players great is time on the pitch , cesc is a living testament to that . He needs to loan them out … or his little experiment will be in vain !
By: ethan_goon on March 29, 2008
at 11:16 am
watever happens….i just want proper wing players to fill in the role of wingers…and not makeshift like diaby or hleb..or even rosicky for tht matter……if tht happens w/o any buys…(ie vela does well) fine…no need for any signing….else..we will very much need…if for example vela is played by wenger in rite flank..who knows??
By: gunner4life on March 29, 2008

i really dont care abt ur f*c*ing ideas ethan…u dont make players great…arsene does…yes this is a very gud ploy to “rest” ade and see how bendtner choses to perform when given the chance..fully knowing tht if he performs well enf…he mite even get the nod ahead of ade against liverpool….he is a genius…but u r not.
wat rotation are u talking abt…as per u i blve wenger needs to do evthing he has already doing al over again…shut up and stop making indications towards “wenger’s little experiment”…its not little…i just hope we win the league this time….and someone sees ur comments in here and gives u a sh** cake on ur face in a pub..i really do…f*c*ing a** corky.

there will have to be an exodus of young guns after the end of next season at latest

The Togolose giant has been sick this season and was naturally gonna get tired as the season progressed.
The future looks good but we need some serious good fotune to get back into this race.

Ethan – Adebayor and Walcott changed the game – Bendtner was the one who was pathetic – he didnt do anything all game – and didnt even challenge for half of the high balls thrown his way.

Hey Guys keep the faith! you know we always do it the hard way !
Only Arsenal could have done something like that – absolutely brilliant, will give them so much confidence now.
Yes we will be fatigued but Liverpool will be as well.

Yes Veteran. I’m also wondering how much effort they’ll put into the derby. But for them it’s a CL spot at stake too, must give a lot. We’ll see.

3 GOALS ! ade on the bench !
?
i thought he was rested
being sub’d on ain’t rested !
another point proven !
Wow, you really aren’t afraid of ridicule.
Ade was rested for 60 minutes. He came in and, together with Theo, changed the game. Did you see his backheel to Flamini in our second? And he gave some serious work to a not very solid Bolton defence.
But Theo and Cesc deserve a lot of credit. Hleb was very important in two of our 3 goals too.
Great victory, I was full of joy when we scored the third.

so so so so upbeat…loved toure wen he ramped down to smother tht s.o.b ref and got carded…2nd goal completely team work…hleb was the one who got thr first and knew a penalty is on cards…bit lucky on the 3rd one…but ditch luck….f.u.c.k luck…comoooooooooon gunners…

By: gunner4life on March 29, 2008

matt .. bendtner does not have enough class to make it at Arsnal .. we def need a top guy to create some competition upfront..happy for Ade/Theo to change course of game, but we need more than impact players upfront
especially since RVP is injury prone
and ethan has a point reg Ade.. he does have a very bad tendency to drift offside ..he always cites the big man as an example yet doesnt realize that he always made it back onside
By: BB on March 29, 2008

@ BB
this game could has easily made it 6 games without a win .. while it is normal to sore when we dont win .. it is not a bad thing to feel happy when we do .. the rot we find / found our self in started from some where .. and it has to stop from somewhere .. beating bolton a team we have always had problem with and one that beat manure at home .. is definitly a step in the right direction.. its not yet uhuru .. for either manure chelsea or arsenal … so its game on
By: Nigerian Gunner on March 29, 2008

A win, is a win. 3 points are 3 points.
You can never please some people…Ever. If we play great and lose the points, they say we are not good enough, if we play with grit and grind a win, they say hold on…don’t get your hopes up high.
What exactly is it? Make up your minds people?
Hope or no Hope?

I think Bendtner will be sold simply doesn’t fit into the way we play…..
Come one boys lets finish the season on a high, unfotunately 6 points is gonna be really difficult to claw away from man u, then to compound things they have their mammoth goal difference which is like a point in its self.
But Like Wnger said we must continue to fight and apply pressure to the others.

BTW, I just found “Le Grove” moderating any comments about Ade.

What a joke!
By: Gunners Unlimited on March 29, 2008
at 7:28 pm
Well Diably is out for 3 games and lets hope his agent gets his wish and some italian team buy him. RVP is still not back to his old form but its coming, Ade was his usual self some good some bad. Walcott was excellent. lets hope Song comes in against Pool NOT GIBERTO. This formation of ADE, RVP, hleb and theo on wings and cesc and flamini in the middle is working, Tolo will have a hard time against Babel, maybe Ebueos speed could help although his tackling is lousy. Bentdner and Song can play a part from the bench
By: solgooner on March 29, 2008
at 7:35 pm
I guess that depends on which Babel turns up Sol
I have seen both sides of him this year, sometimes he is excellent and sometimes he is anonymous. For Liverpool I agree that we should go with Theo on the wing, he looked hungry today and certainly made the difference. I know Hleb set the goals up and I dont want to take away his contribution, but Theo seemed to inject some energy in the team and it rubbed off. We often hear criticism about how late Arsene leaves it before making substituations, well tonight the introduction of Ade and Theo won us the game.
I am still not convinced about Bendtner, he has got something, but maybe another loan period would suit him
Looking forward to MOTD tonight, I wonder what Mssr’s Hansen and Lawrenson will make of that.
Final point for now, fair play Man Ure looked awesome tonight and I think it will take a minor miracle for us to win it, but hey today was a minor miracle. I think we would need to win on the 13th and then they have back to back away games at Blackburn and Chelsea.
By: Patthegooner on March 29, 2008

A great fightback but also papers over some very bad aspects of the teams play
But at least a rub of the green again and great to see things turn
I thought a few weeks back that villa might get a draw at OT but they have gone totally off the boil
Diaby?? I give up. He doesn’t tackle and when he does he almost breaks someones leg. AS BAD AS TAYLORS TACKLE GUYS. That’s why WEnger doesn’t trust him in CM.
Bendter?? No passion or workrate. Prima donna.
This game provided a good example of how Arsenal should have played against teams who drop deep. Go to three at the back : Kolo, Gallas & Clichy. That trio have more pace that anyone in the league. Don’t play the offside. Just defend each break on its merits as the most attackers you face are 1-2. Hey presto, you have an extra midfielder or attacker. It’s a no brainer Wenger. Should have been done against Brum and Boro

By: Steve on March 29, 2008

I cannot see Song playing against pool. More likely to be Hleb left and Theo on the right. He might be on the bench though.
By: Steve on March 29, 2008
at 10:20 pm
whats all this about Song? why would Wenger drop Flamini? if you are talking bench then fine. dont forget we have 7 subs in europe.
I hope man u beleive their own press. because if they keep this up no one else has a chance. we need to hope they come up against a dogged side or are complacent but fergie never allows complacency. they seem very professional in that respect. I heard that they may have injury problems. ronaldo might have a hamstring prob, nani is out, Giggs is out, carrick and scholes also went off injured today. you never know.
Eboue should play RB on Weds, with Toure at CB and Theo on the wing. Senderos and Diaby need to be on the bench. Ade and RVP to start up top.
anyway well pleased with that result today. such character and maybe that has turned our fortunes?
By: gazzap on March 29, 2008

Gazzap: Man u are a strange animal. At one time they seem unplayable then get beaten by Bolton at home. Bit like us I suppose.
By: Steve on March 29, 2008
at 11:09 pm
Great result but lots of defensive lapses Clichy similar to the one against¡t Brom Flamini gave away a goal. Kolo is no longer fast enough for RB, Bentdner is a good sub not a starter. golas came from wing play thats why we need a winger, apart from Vela
By: solgooner on March 29, 2008
at 11:21 pm
Gazzap Diably should not play on the wing Wednesday, hes a CM and an inexperienced defender

“3 goals ! with ade on the bench !”
The 3 goals were with him on the pitch. Enough said. He was rested as Cesc and Ade were rested on the Carling Cup and came on later. As Ade was rested at Everton only to come on the second half and finish the game off with a goal. Etc. He will start on wednesday if nothing goes wrong.
If you are trying to say this: “he gave us 60 minutes to get our passing game going !” you are either joking or a troll.
