Arsene hit back at the media sniping yesterday
We will not bottle it. Believe me, we have the strength of character to win the title. That’s my belief, my firm belief, and, at the game on Sunday, you will see. Since the first day of the season, I have said that I believe in this team. Come back in May and we will speak about it then. Until you win, people have doubts about you, they’re questioning you. But the strong ones keep going
This is no more than he has been saying all season and nothing less than you would expect from him. Arsene is staunchly loyal to the players and that is on the whole reciprocated whilst they are in the first team. And there is not any doubt that his conviction is genuine.
He went on,
I feel that since the beginning of the season, we have been the most consistent team. We have lost just one game. If we win our big games and continue to be consistent, I’m sure we will finish in front of the other sides. I cannot imagine that we will lose the league if we have lost only one game at the end of the season
The last part indicates he has not got a vivid enough imagination because four consecutive draws indicates that you can lose one game and not win the title. Even winning all of our remaining games might not be sufficient if United do the same, bar in the Arsenal match of course. It would then come down to goal difference and that is a tad of a lottery because one good thumping distorts the total. Oh for the convoluted complexity of Goal Averages…
Theirry Henry gave some moral support and encouragement to the players,
I have this feeling Arsenal will win the Premier League. They are playing well against the big four and I do think they play the most attractive football, though Manchester United have also played some good stuff. So far, Arsenal have lost only one game and, if they remain unbeaten from now on, it would be very unusual not to win the title
Steadfastly loyal to his former colleagues as well,
Obviously, I love Arsenal. But that’s not the reason why I think they will win the title. I just feel they have the quality. I watch them every game possible and I wish them good luck. I still have something in my heart for Arsenal. They have played beautiful football this season and deserve to win something. It would be brilliant
And so say most of us. Theo Walcott is the main subject of this piece in The Independent with some interesting comparators although separating out starts from substitute appearances might be more useful.
Meanwhile Avram Grant sought to make Chelsea out to be the victims and gave a lily-livered rationale to their actions
There are players I think that make worse tackles than this and didn’t even get yellow cards and didn’t apologise. It’s happened to us someone sent our captain to hospital for a few days, and then not playing for a few weeks. Other players, I don’t want to mention names, and they didn’t apologise. We took responsibility, he [Cole] apologised and I am giving him credit for this
Hmmm, who could that be who injured John Terry? Ah, that would be Emmanuel Eboue. And it proves that the Chelsea manager does not read any press because Eboue has been kicked from pillar to post for his behaviour from within and without. If Grant does not want to mention names why bother with the comment? Oh, I get it; Chelsea are the same as everyone else and not the nasty, boot-boy thugs that the media make them out to be. Well, yes they are. No other team has been in front of the FA Beaks for failing to control their players on such a regular basis – twice that I can think of this season before even looking at it properly.
Fundamentally, he wants them to be loved. The problem is that they provoke a reaction through their attitude as a club. From the Boardroom downwards, there is quite simply a lack of any discernable class in their actions. Grant may be trying to change that and certainly Kenyon, Buck & Co., are keeping their mouths shut rather than seeking media glory personally. That might help but in much the same way that Manchester United garnered opprobrium for Roy Keane & Co’s hounding of referees, it is on the pitch that they will have to work hardest.
Still it all adds oil to the fires in the build-up for the match on Sunday. ’til Tomorrow
