A Big Weekend Approaches

A quiet news day ahead of the Chelsea game. Nicklas Bendtner refuted some questions about himself and Adebayor as a strike partnership,

People keep saying we are too similar in style and things like that, but I think it can work just fine

He substantiated this with comments about the Wigan and Villa games. However, the thrust is that they are building up an understanding although with the return to fitness of RvP, the likelihood of them getting much playing time together seems to diminish. The Dane then went on to discuss Sunday,

We have to come out with loads of determination, power, energy and will and really show that we can come back to winning ways in the league. It’s very important for us to push on now, we cannot allow any more points to be dropped now, otherwise we won’t make it - as simple as that

Like the rest of the squad, he knows what has to be done but talking about it is easy, the hard part comes at 4pm on Sunday when for the next hour and three quarters, the match takes place.

Meanwhile Arsene observed,

Chelsea is a big game for us now, but maybe it’s a good opportunity not to put too much pressure on ourselves and to show how good we are against a good side

Kolo Toure concurred,

We know that we can go anywhere and win - we have shown that in Milan. We need to repeat that kind of performance on Sunday and then we can be on top of Chelsea

This is all good stuff. If talking about it convinces the squad in their own minds that they can win, so be it. However, putting it into practice needs to happen as well because winning is the only option. A draw will not be good enough as United have a superior goal difference that requires Arsenal to hand out some good hidings to recover. The one truth that Alex Ferguson has spoken in recent weeks is that the most consistent team between now and May will win the league. He perhaps should have clarified that to the team that wins most consistently but there you go.

Gael Clichy meanwhile spoke of the Chelsea game and the pressures of being top,

We’ve had the experience of being on top and the pressure has been on. It’s good to be top, it shows the quality is there, but it’s not bad to be second or third. It will be an interesting end to the season and we hope we can come out in first place

It begs the question though as to how well they have handled being top of the League. Recent weeks suggests not too well when the ‘business end’ of the season approaches. Yet neither Arsenal or United have handled the pressure particularly well despite the latter’s so-called years of experience at the top. Well, OK, one season. External factors such as injuries and suspensions come into play but the inability of both sides to take advantage of their points supremacy at varying times in the season is going to come back and bite one of them painfully. If the squad want to stop the inquisition about whether or not they are ready to win the title despite tender years, they have to win on Sunday and that is something that they are more than capable of doing.

‘til Tomorrow.

Good piece Yogi, and if there was any match that had to be a ‘must win’ its surely our game on Sunday.
Lets all be honest it would be typical of our club to get the three points and end Chelsea’s long unbeaten run. We’ve done it so many times in the past where we have not been fancied, i for one would not bet against it.
A win might well spur us on to an unbeaten run ourselves, wouldn’t that be just fantastic !
Heres hoping !

AGAIN SOME OF THE PLAYERS COMING OUT WITH ALL THE TALK FUNNY HOW NONE OF THEM MENTION WE MUST SHOOT MORE ALL THE FANS AROUND THE STADIUM SEEM TO THINK THIS IS ONE OF OUR MAIN FAULTS EVEN WENGER DOESN’T MENTION SHOOTING MORE CAN ANYONE SECOND GUESS WENGER’ EXCUSE IF IT DOESN’T HAPPEN THIS SUN DAY…

Regardless of all the negative, pessimistic views of many, we must all be positive on Sunday and push our team to get past the Chelk$.

The Chelk$ themselves must be feeling they are not on a great run after their high scoring draw and failing to leap over us. We must not concede to keep their crowds quiet, we must be patient a la Milan game and not go forward and leave our back door open. In the end, we have the %50 - 50 chance to win with a little bit of luck that has abandoned us for long.

In the meantime, there is nothing false about hope. So, I will hope my team, all my team, whoever gets selected to play this game, to be successful and make us Arsenal fans proud.

Back to form today, YW.

We need the win, although it is not ‘a must win’ for us, but it certainly is for the Chavs.

It is a must not lose for us, then all the remaining games have to be won.

Unlikely but possible. A win against Chelsea would certainly help give the confidence.

It is tight but a winning streak by Utd, the Chavs or us wins the title.

Great to be competing at this stage of the season. 17 PL teams including several big clubs, who followed the model advocated so eloquently here, are nowhere near this particular race.

Up the Gunners.

to Ethan yesterday.. I completely agree with you, Van Persie + Walcott will work, but at this moment of time adebayor cannot be dropped, u never know tho, mayb wenger will shock us. How long have us supporters been wanting to see Eboue dropped, but it never happens.. He will only put them in when they are completely ready, and walcott isnt there yet, congratulations to him bein called up to the england squad, but i can only see Ade and RVP startin at chelsea, walcott will be lucky to get ahead of Eboue even though he probably deserves to.

Heres my team for the Chelski:

Almunia
Sagna Toure Senderos Clichy
Walcott Fabregas Flamini Hleb
Van Persie Adebayor

Really hope walcott starts but then again, imagine the problems he can give cole later in the game if he comes from the bench..??

Come on u gooners!

Not sure I would say this is a “must-win” game, at least not untill the United-Liverpool result is in.

What I would say, is a defeat would be fatal to our title ambitions.

I’d guess we will play well, but can we find the net.

ooppps.. i didnt mean Senderos… i was feelin sorry for him at the time i was making the team, because he was playin so well and now hes dropped.. Gallas will obviously start!!

Anyone else amused by the Cole apology, can he really put sentences like that together? If ever there was a club panicking about a disrepute charge and points deductions, this is it. Typically Chelsea play to a different set of rules, imagine if one of our team had behaved like that. The FA are clearly afraid of Abramovich’s ability to take them to court on any judgement against his team, just like they are afraid to upset Fergie.

Stilll onwards and upwards, hopefully. Please ,please can we put Chelsea in their place?

chris i agree

i think wenger will start with ade but i just hope if he starts giving away possession to easily substitutions must take place earlier than60-70- 80 minute mark ! If theo is to make a real impact you cant send him in there under pressure , everyone says the lad isnt ready , but he’s more than ready ..
He always comes in under pressure to try and make a difference ! and sometimes he does !!!
But give the lad some time to get his eye in ! he will be better than cesc for us ! And the only way that will happen is if he gets more time on the pitch ! He is a great creator of chances and the team needs someone like that NOW !
and that ain’t no lie !

He who predicts and claims to know the future is a liar, even if what he predicted came true.
===============================
yes that really makes sense ! ????

This is set up for us to regain the lead !
i feel we have this in our power still to dictate our own futures ! We must watch joe cole and drogs,
mark them hard when they are going forward, avoid injuries!!!(cashley cole ?) and score early !
scoring early will put the fans to bed ! the midfield battle will be paramount !

Liverpool will come at man U hard with torres in top form ! I think man U aren’t playing that well currently , only ronaldo is carving it up , if liverpools defense can keep him quiet and get stevie G and torres creating down the other end
i think man U should be very afraid !

Possession will be vital on sunday ! its imperative that wenger keeps an eye on his players and makes the changes if people (any people) are under preforming ! We wont get as many chances as we did V’s boro etc .. its important to make those chances COUNT !

One of the key things this Sunday will happen miles from Stamford Bridge; we really need Liverpool to take at least a point from Utd. This is one of Utd’s remaining games that, with them going three points clear in midweek, we have marked as “tricky” and gives us hope to catch them.

Those that have written us off seem to forget that, for once, Sky’s billing of “Grand Slam” Sunday for the Big Four games could actually be as important as they make out. Recent seasons have seen these games mean very little apart from the clichéd “bragging rights.” This time around, all the big four still have to play eachother with 8 games to go so points could be “stolen” from eachother and there’s potential for someone to take all 9 points from those three games and really hurt the other team’s challenge…let’s hope we get the 9 points!

Further to this, I’ve just seen Alan Hansen is making a complete prat of himself again by stating in his BBC article that Chelsea cannot be discounted from the title race but if Arsenal lose on Sunday and Utd win, “Wenger can forget about the title!” What? If Chelsea win they’ll be one pont ahead of us…why would that put them in contention but put us out? Admittedly it would be extremely difficult particularly being 6 points behind Utd and potentially having to make-up the goal difference but not impossible.

I’m loathed to comment on Manyoo’s remaining games as, at the moment, all I’m hoping for is that Arsenal find some wins from their games. However, Utd’s last eight include trips to Chelsea, Boro, Blackburn and Wigan. West Ham, Villa and Arsenal still have to go to Old Trafford with Liverpool there this weekend. I hope they get hammered in every single one of them!!! ;-)

danny M

the reason he is making a prat out of himself is chevski have to play the top 4 still … And all those games are based at Stamford bridge ! So he typically is stating that they have the odds in there favor to take 9 points from the top 4 !

Yes there is the possibility ! and probability ..
pundits like that like to state those phrases like
that but dont make a point of the fixtures being weighed in there favor , so they look even better
if it all rings true ! But it is something i noted back in december .. That they are set up to come back from behind .

If you don’t understand the comment, move on. It just means it’s over and beyond your level, don’t try to understand it…it was not meant for you.

its over ! lets hope so !

Man United 1 Liverpool 2
Chelsea 0 Arsenal 1

Flint and Danny your right in terms of points difference, its just i feel the players need that win as we cant keep drawing and confidence is bound to dip and belief will start to go out of the window if we dont.

Ps7 i was astounded Cole did not get sent off the other night. He deserved a straight red for the tackle but then to act like that to the referee was outrageous. He should have got another yellow card for that show and walked.
Im an ex referee and how these guys keep their temper with these prima donnas i dont know.
I would not have taken that the other night and im sure a number of ex refs would have felt the same.
Its indicative of the modern game when these stars are behaving the way they do.
Im amazed their even discussing who will be the next England captain and could not believe it when they say John Terry is the favourite.
Dont get me wrong im not saying he is not a good player, but to berate the ref at every decision and grabbing cards out of the referees hand is not the behaviour of an England captain, not to mention his so called off field activities.
Gerrard for me is the man for the job, not only a great player but an inspiration as well.

Anyway ive got that off my chest, wishing you all fellow Gooners a great Easter.

Cheslea are not the same team as when Mourinho was there.. even tho the same players are still there, they dont look as solid defensively, becos Grant is urging the players forward more often.

They are a real threat to any defence, with Drogba, Lampard, Cole.. but our defenders coped with them back in the winter they can do it again now. I always fancy us to outscore any team wen we are on form, maybe it will be an open game, but if we hold onto the ball like we have been doin, we can frustrate chelsea more than we have been doin ourselves.

All these games we drew we have had loads n loads of possession, just lacked that bit of creativity. Chelsea are not use to chasing the ball, lets give them the runaround and chances will follow from there.

The boys will give everythin to win this game.. they realise how important it is, but then again it is for chelski as well.. i think the team that makes the most of their chances will come out on top. Ade.. RVP.. Hleb.. Fab.. are you listening??

Who i would start with…

Almunia
Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
Eboue Fabregas Flamini Hleb
RvP Ade

This is the team we all know will start the game.. mayb walcott might get tho nod, but i doubt it, coming off the bench in a big game like this could suit us more.

come on u gooonas..!!

almunia
sagna-gallas-toure-clichy
eboue-fabregas-flamini-hleb
RVP-Ade

Sub:lehman,walcott,gilberto,senderos,Bendtner

Cant wait for this match. Their midfield looks better than ours but if we can raise the game like we did against milan..we can be all over them…but they look very very strong…particularly Cole and Drogba.

Hope Gallas doesnt make silly mistakes like against Boro it will prove very costly….and hope Flamini keeps cole so quite he wud move to left/rite flank..where either sagna or clichy wud take care of him.

Hope we win.

The Chelsea draw will do us wonders - They will now be forced to come out to win the game, and arsenal are a much more effective team against an opponent that comes to play.

Of more interest to me is how ManU will approach the game. I can see Benitez, far from coming out all guns blazing, coming out very defensively. ManU will become quite desperate towards the latter stages if they are not in the lead.

PS - Alan Hansen is a twat - just want to lay that out there - a total and complete twat.

I know sometimes ignoring is better but I can’t ignore blatant lies:

Ethan said yesterday:

“and lastly i said that we would loose of C.L spot if wenger didnt buy anyone !!! and didnt replace henry !
he got dudu - sagna and diarra ..
HE bought people ! like i said he would !
like you people said HE WOULDNT !
i was happy when he got dudu !
also i think that means my statement of we will loose our spot if we dont buy anyone
IS NULL AND VOID !”

But it’s not. Because look at what he said when the league was starting and we had already bought Dudu and Sagna (diarra was bought later but didn’t almost play, so his influence in the league is marginal):

“im just hoping arsene will sign another 1 or 2 players , im just praying he’s going to access how well we function in the next game or 2 in the EPL and add the players after
his foundings are completed.

But as is .. i cant see a top 4 birth ..
talking top 2 is absolutely ludicris.”

Shame.

You can click on my nick if you want to read it yourselves. There’s also people saying Wenger’s trust in Flamini was ridiculous, for example. :)

Cheers to Yogi and the rest.

I think that if we are to seriously challenge for this title then Sunday is a must win regardless of what happens at Old Trafford. Being 3 points behind and really you can call it four with the goal difference, means that we have to come out on top of the 6 pointers against Chelsea, Man Ure and Liverpool

before the Season I stated that a successful season to me would be a top four finish, but more importantly would be to finish within single figures in points behind the leaders. I certainly did not think we could or would win so all of this is a bonus.

We have the benefit now that Eduardo aside, all of our big players are coming back to fitness, and who knows, things can change on a weekly basis, for example imagine what a 3 or 4 week injury to Ronaldo would do to Man Ure.

Oh and as for Ashley Cole, there is no way that was a personal written apology, that had PR manager written all over it, just shows what he has turned into, as for the reaction of the Chelsea Spice boys surrounding the ref in the same incident, total disrepect for the game, awful

Wenger on Flamini’s Contract

“We are on course there, negotiations are going well and we hope to sort that out in April.”

Good News, it is dragging on but I think he will stay

Just to clarify - I agree that ideally we need to win on Sunday but I was just making the point that Utd dropping points against teams like Liverpool is vital to our challenge.

I also wanted to say that no win does not mean no title - there’s a long way to go people - these recent weeks remind me of losing to Derby and drawing with Wimbledon at the end of the 88/89 season. That feeling brilliantly portrayed by Nick Hornby/Colin Firth in Fever Pitch of completely giving up on the title. We’ve been written out of it by so many people I just hope we can clinch it and see the naysayers backtrack (Hansen especially!).

yh.. the media are a complete bunch of twats.. we have been the most consistent team near enough, lost the fewest games, played the most attractive football yet they still write us off.. Its gd in a way tho becos when they done that at the start of the season it gave us the momentum to prove them wrong. I think sunday that will be the case.. we will want to prove to every1 and ourselves that we are gd enough and end up the best team in the country come May.

These people like Hansen are making these comments so they seem commendable to wot the predicted at the start of the season, all a bunch of muppets, they just make themselves look worse an worse every time..! Hopefully our boys will silence all these so called experts who know absolutely nuffin about football

Come on the Arsenal..!!

I think it would be better to have eboue start on the right instead of walcott because chelsea pose more threat down the flanks.

Walcott must start in all our remaining home games and against the lesser sides like boro! (another 10 mins against boro and we would have won) but against the tougher sides we need eboue’s in your face attitude!

maybe theo should get a free role in a 4-4-1+ theo.

by the way does anyone know any good place to watch the game in calais?

Just wanted to reply to Joseph K from the previous post’s discussion, re Paul Doyle’s negative article on Man United in the Guardian.

Joseph, yes, journos often pieces like that to provoke a reaction. However, if you knew anything about Doyle, he has consistently criticized MU, he has predicted all season long that they will not win anything. He is one of the few journos out there who does not swallow the hype about Fergie and his invincibles. Of course he’s likely wrong that MU won’t win anything this season (if only!), I’m just saying that I’ve read him for years now and he always expresses skepticism about MU whenever he reports or opines on them.

Difficult to think about anything right now except Sunday’s 2 games. We have to win, we have to win, we have to win. However, if we don’t, please let’s just play in a far more inspired manner than recently, in a manner that gives hope for the remaining games.

WE WILL WIN

Marcus history is on our side only loosing once this season ! so going on that a draw isnt a bad thing !

what is crucial is liverpool win ! chelsea cant take 3 points but then neither can Man U !

a draw isnt bad it keeps us within strikng distance and sets up our game at old trafford !
mathematically its still a good chance , however im with you on the need to preform and get goals in the back of the net ! RVP should go a long way to providing that as long as he get service !

a draw will be a great result irrespective of the other game. however if utd win and we draw it is curtains. RVP has been out for too long to be relied on. not sure where the spark will come we should certaimnly play walcott in my opnion as he is about the only one who can or has been providing it. we need to score goals, you have to assume we will let in at least one. no point playing eboue who adds NOTHING going forward. (or anwhere else for that matter).

i am going for a 1 1 prediction and the same at old trafford.

Listening to raffa’s press conference you gotta say hes out for closing the gap ! If they can subdue ronaldo with some good marking , torres and gerrard
have got the quality to make an upset ! They really have played pretty well recently , ( which is unsettling for the C.L) but i hope they show the same quality against Man U , mind you the last 3 games at old trafford V’s pool has earned them 3 losses !
not a good stat if your gunner !
But by the same token it could be a good time to upset the trend and percentage wise there due for a win ! ..
I know the betting is giving even odds ! on all the top 4 this weekend .. so they aren’t brave enough to give out any odds !…

or should i say FAVORED odds !

Ethan quote
“But by the same token it could be a good time to upset the trend and percentage wise there due for a win !”

Then he criticize people for their spelling, when he seems to be writing as a 6 grader. Just in case you didn’t know Ethan, it should be “They are due for a win” not “there due for a win”

Learn you English before you attack others.

NYmarcus

Memory fails me but isn’t Doyle a Bluenose?

Do you spend much time on the Guardian blogs? If so give me a shout, I’m PedroV and always to be found lurking of a weekday as my company firewall won’t allow me access to sites such as this one!

Re. Sunday: The main point of interest for me is Eboue and how Wenger is tempted to play it relating to our right side.

Obviously, there is going to be alot of needle between the teams as it is; the London rivalry, the state of play in the league and not least - Cashley. So to add Eboue into the mix given the bad feeling against him over Terry kicking his studs (ahem) would really shake things up.

The question we have to ask is this: do we try to dampen the atmosphere and sacrifice solidity by putting Theo out right, thus gambling that Chelsea play narrow with J Cole in a central position. Or do we say safety first Eboue plays with Theo to come on at the first sign of a moment of madness? Its a worry becasue Cole and/or Malouda could conceivably be attacking that channel…

My money is that Eboue plays and we play safety first, my hope is that Grant gets it tactically as perfect as he did in the Carling cup final.

JosephK, I think you’re right about Doyle.

I did frequent the Guardian blogs until recently. Now I don’t plan on going there ever again. I got tired of the insults (some thrown at me), meanspirited tribalism and just got fed up with the whole site. What cemented my feelings was the whole Eduardo aftermath — the whole thing just had me in such rage, contempt and disgust that I just didn’t want to participate on the blog anymore.

and yes, please god, may Grant have his very worst day ever on Sunday.

Marcus

Funnily enough, I have exactly the same feelings - particularly after the Eduardo incident. The rampant childish tribalism really bugs me on there, but its all I have! Its that or the BBC 606 site, and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, well maybe Ethan! I have been trying to ween myself off general blogging since Eduardo and have had a fair bit of success which has resulted in lots more stuff getting done at work!

So Hleb did meet the agent before the Milan game. Wenger says he will keep it secret and did not confirm if Hleb discussed a move with the agent.

I think Hleb is looking around for a move. I don’t blame him for wanting to move out of the PL after being kicked around, then the Stupid Giant Thug of B’ham incident. I blame Hleb for taking the sneaky way though, and if he discussed a move, then there is no difference between him and Cashley. The motives may be different, but the way the went about it is all the same “Just Wrong”.

I for one don’t blame Hleb. Anyone who dribbles like he does should fear for his legs in the EPL. I don’t want him to go, but I would understand.

Cole’s tackle was instructive, and shows everything Taylor and Bham said to be complete bulls**t. Cole went in harder and higher than Taylor, but as his studs made contact, he pulled out, bending his knee. Taylor, OTOH, went straight through like a karate kick. He made no effort to pull out of the tackle at all, keeping his leg locked straight as his studs made contact.

EPL is full of scum bags like Taylor and Cashley….Eventually good players will leave espcially the ones that are not protected by referees and most of those are Arsenal players.

re. the trashley ‘apology’, there’s no doubt he was smirking as he delivered it. nasty piece of work.
and that’s an interesting point raised by nolaboyd - the taylor challenge did somehow seem particularly brutal compared to other, runofthemill studs up challenges. it didnt help that taylor’s a great lump of a man and dudu’s only diddy.
my suggestions to leboss for next season: new keeper, more cover at centre back, new winger, new striker.

i’m a one bad a$$ boy

nacho

wenger stated:-
Wenger admitted a year ago that he may have to let Flamini leave to get regular football, but he has gone on to become a fixture alongside Cesc Fabregas in Arsenal’s midfield.

So if he was willing to let him go im sure i can be forgiven for backing him ! Least i have an opinion,
im not just a regurgitator !

Haha I like how Ashley became Cashley which has now become Trashley. Yeah, rubbish.

Thanks YW, good piece.

I’m cautiously optimistic about Sunday’s game because, as some of you said, Chelsea aren’t in the best of form themselves. The Spurs game that some press called “classic” was just a combination of goal galore, Joe Cole’s brilliance throughout and Robbie Keane’s great goal. Both teams just threw away their defence. How I wish they’d be like that this Sunday too. Secondly, Chelsea played an exhausting mid-week derby while we will have rested one week. Thirdly, Cudicini was a bit guilty of bad positioning in some of the goals and so hopefully we can test him.

On our side, I don’t have to repeat that we play better against strong teams. Chelsea are strong. That’s it.

Lou
i agree both teams pushed forward abandoning their defense, but can we score 4 goals ? we dont really possess a keane and a berbatov upfront .
I think we need to NEVER abandon our defense against chevski , because then we will need to go head to head with them in goal scoring and based on current form you wouldnt want to be a betting man !
with those odds ! hit them on the counter and keep it tight , is the key …

I think there will be lots of yellows and we need to sit tight on defense

Josef K or ethan_alert as you so sacredly call yourself ..

thats SLANG not bad spelling.. Also i’m not the one calling the kettle black ! you taunt me about my grammar and the very blog you write you cant even spell ‘believing’ ….

useless waste of space that you are , hypocritical geek! do a extra shift at work , we don’t want you to come home !
