Ten Days To Define Arsenal’s Title Challenge

It is not too melodramatic to call the next week and half exactly that. With Chelsea and Manchester United playing tonight, a Sky super-duper-fandabidozie Sunday this weekend and the visit to Bolton the weekend after, the debate about just how costly the eight points dropped from the last four Premier League games have been might well be settled. On the other hand, it might be.

You would expect United to win at home to Bolton this evening. The days when Allardyce forged a team of upstarts reminiscent of the ‘Crazy Gang’ days of Wimbledon seem long gone. Indeed, I would not be surprised if Gary Megson wrote off the match and decided to rest a few players for their final run-in. Chelsea meanwhile travel to White Hart Lane. Revenge might well be on the visitors minds but more importantly, the three points that would draw them level with Arsenal will be foremost in their thoughts.

If the results go as expected, it sets up Sunday as perhaps a defining moment. Neither Arsenal nor Chelsea can afford to lose the game, especially if United beat Liverpool. That would mean a gap of six points before kick-off; similarly, in those circumstances, a draw would not be much use either. A gap of five points on Sunday evening heaps a lot of pressure onto the following week’s games. Arsene and the squad acknowledged as much in recent days, agreeing that they cannot afford to lose another game this Premier League season if the title is to return to the club. I would go one-step further; the four draws mean that it is unlikely that they are able to draw another game.

That is not to concede the title, something that I will not do until it is mathematically impossible to win. Some might view that as naïve or optimistic but by the end of the evening we might even be top, six points clear of Chelsea and five ahead of United so it is realistic not to give up now.

We can debate until the cows come home about weaknesses, real or perceived, within the squad. You may feel free to say that we need this striker or midfielder but it is all irrelevant for this season. No one is joining right now or until June at the earliest. The fact is that the squad we have is the one that you are stuck with for the next two months whether you like it or not.

The squad are not giving up though. Kolo Toure believes that the result at Chelsea is far from settled

We are still in the title race

News to some, eh Kolo? You must have thought we were out of it in the last few days the way debates have been raging. He went on,

We know that we can go anywhere and win – we have shown that in Milan. We need to repeat that kind of performance next week and then we can beat Chelsea. The most important thing is to be confident and play your game, stay strong in your mind and believe that until the end, it is not finished

Robin van Persie concurred,

I am not a daydreamer. I really think we can win the title and Champions League this season. Why not? We have the qualities. We have to stick together and believe in it, belief can take you very far. We have everything to play for. Every game for me now is like a final

If it is, then I hope that nerves do not strike him or anyone else down as they do in the real thing on so many occasions.

Tomas Rosicky’s injury is one frustrating aspect of this and last season as well. The Czech international is not yet fit to undergo training,

There is nothing I can do but wait and hope that the injury goes away

You would hope that if surgery is needed to cure the problem that neither the player nor the club will put that on hold to satisfy his Euro2008 aspirations. I am sure they will not but his injury has been dogging him for some time now and it is a time when the squad could do with some of his wizardry.

The one thing that is clear that the players and Arsene are talking the talk. Now they have to walk the walk to make get some reward from the season.

‘til Tomorrow.

Yes good article yogi ,

I have not given up on the race either, but someone needs to step up and take on the strikers role and get a bag full of goals ! convert the many chances our midfield/wingers put in the box ..If ade can dig deeeep ! go for it ! but id rather put money on a RVP revival ..

Dudu is sorely missed and his creativity will also be missed , he made ade look good ,but i think theo can do the same ,we saw glimpses in the C.L and he deserves a run … Will the pressure get to him ?
you dont know if you dont try …

I think bolton and liverpool need points , so i believe Man U will drop some points .. how many
im unsure , but the key to our game with chelsea will be fitness , they play on thursday and then again 3 days later with us .. That is what needs to be capitalized upon . Hopefully spurs will run them ragged and steal a point or better …
If things are not going our way wenger needs to sub in sooner , waiting to the 60-70 minute mark has done nothing recently , he needs to have an eye for under performance and kill the problems (players) off after the 1st half ! His substitutions have been suspect for a while now .. Like the c.c game v’s spurs ! sending someone in ,in a pressure cooker environment for the last 10 -20 minutes it is pretty hard to play naturally, especially with always conceding 1st . A player is defeated mentally before he begins .. theo come in and score 2 goals in 10 minutes ! it aint going to happen, bendtner isnt ready and should be dropped .. give someone else a run as the boy needs more work CLEARLY ! it might make someone famous !

Clearly the battle is uphill ! and a few extra players from the jan window would have saved our bacon ..
but we dont need anymore players right ?

Uphill no doubt BUT c’mon guys one final push with the last few remaining matches and then we can really be proud of this season.

Great teams are forged in adversity. to be quite honest i dont buy into the negativity thats swirling around the team, on the contrary i am quite excited that everyone is writing us off. in my ten years of supportin arsenal i have never seen a fixture list place such a mountain before us, but i cant get past my gut feeling that this could be the making of this team. I have a feeling that this is indeed destiny calling. up the guns!!!

Ethan not bad comments for a change in general I would agree with them all apart from the last line. Reason they dont hand out crystal balls to managers and it has been some time since a player had such a serious injury as Edourdo. (of course I know about Abou). I really get peeved when I see the following on other Arsenal blogs:
http://gunnerblog.com/?p=933.
I sure the players do at times read comments but this one really is beyond the limit. I just hope Eboue doesn’t read it, what a load of crap.

This campaign smells a lot like 2003 when we gave up an 8 point lead to Man Utd culminating in a 2-3 loss to Leeds. I don’t know why I should feel this campaign as being different to that one and so we’ve bottled it and history will now repeat itself. Sigh….

naga gunner have the same feeling brings back memories of our win at the pool to take the title; Wow would that be nice to see again.

old timer
whilst i think eboue is an OK player , i dont think the midfield position suits him ! i feel sorry for him really , wenger rips him from the right back position for the better sagna ,without question, but then throws him into the right winger position he has ended up being a jack of no - trades by no fault of his own ….. with theo needing more time on the pitch i do think eboue will possibly be sold come end of season. And if barca is the target club we need to make it a swap deal ! it would be a perfect chance for wenger to get a Barcelona player without paying dearly for them .. but i concur with your thoughts on degrading eboue he hasnt done that much wrong this season to warrant that sort of abuse !
He does dive a bit , but i think if all players are honest with themselves most do … Or at least make contact always look worse than it is …
My bug bear has been ade , but then its hard not
to compare any arsenal striker to the caliber of henry , a player who has been our rock in the past !.. Henry did turn those draws into wins ..
And if henry wanted to return i for one would welcome it .. He would be more humble after his term away from us , and i think in turn less demanding .. But regardless with dudu out for an unspecified period im sure wenger will be on the search for a striker now … maybe we can swap eboue for th14 ?

that wouldnt be too bad now would it ?

Ethan, I think that Eboue is a player we really need the example was when Sanga was withdrawn against Middle he really performed well. I still like his runs into the box and his crosses are not bad either, IMO he does attack the defense. I feel the best is still to come, even his diving seems to have stopped; no one will convince me that we should have received a penalty in the last game. . As for Ade he does have his draw backs but overall he still is the man in the box, and young Bendtner is still not ready yet. I would be extremely surprised if Henri came back cannot think of a player who has left us who returned as a player. His problem with sciatica is a real worry and one that will not go away, (speak from real experience). It suggest that he has a spinal problem that is crushing the nerve, and only surgery will overcome that but there are problems there. It could be a case of time on the bench for long periods. Its a risk I feel we cannot take. Its bad enough having Tommy out and RVP(although he appears to have recovered), that could mean another player out as well. There is a case in the summer to find perhaps another player because of the long recovery time for Dudu; but time will tell. You may be right and Henri will return, for the sum of 5 million it would perhaps be a gamble worth taking.

Yup im with you on all the above , but i if walcott next season ( and you have presume it will happen) gets a more regular starting births on that right wing , eboue will be relegated to our bench .. And i feel he needs to play every week or he will turn into the player that some already believe he is ! I honestly dont have a problem with eboues overall performance , to be honest i feel clichy has looked more ragged and worn out than eboue recently.. But if you stand back and look at clichys overall season it has been brilliant . Its hard to forget the error that made gallas loose it ! , its sort of like the senderos scenario… your remembered for doing one or 2 things bad ,but not remembered for a solid performances .

Lack of goals in the back of the net is my biggest concern , because without them we cannot pick up the precious points we so greatly require !
And you cannot really fault the midfield we have been playing so long now without any real attacking midfeilders (wingers) that these guys feed the box and put in the crosses like its second nature ,but the strikers having been keeping there end of the bargain .. Hlebs been flat recently , but he still is beating the man and trying to take them on two on one style .. flamini’s contract is a worry and i only wish pat was here so i could give him stick about it !
.. but over all i think we are still dictating play and possession , we are just lacking the final touch into the goal mouth !
And lastly almunia is a changed man ! he has turned from zero to hero this season !
just like flamini …

but the strikers haven’t been keeping there end of the bargain

Excellent piece Yogi, you always give us a constructive, well balanced view on the state of play when others all about us are voicing their doom and gloom.
It certainly is not over, and it would be very Arsenal like if the boys dug in and gave us a little purple patch between now and the end of the season. There is no reason why they cant as the pressure is slightly tilted away from us now and could be beneficial to the young players as everybody thinks we’ve blown it.
With regard to Eboue, the reason why Arsene bought Sagna was because he realised that Eboue was not up to it defensively, but saw something in his going forward and his running at people to suggest he might have a future in that position.
Its too early to say whether he will adapt and needs more time to show what he can do. I agree with Old Timer that the antics seem to have ceased which needed to happen, as he was driving us all up the wall.
Its a shame Bentley decided to go and not stay to fight it out as he would be for sure the best player in that right midfield slot.
For those gooners who didnt see the Sky Sports interview with him last Saturday, he said the quote from him wanting Theo to up and leave was totally false and went on to say that if Theo was in the same position in two years time he should think about leaving.
He was very gracious and said of course he would have loved to be part of our club as he had a fantastic time there but HE made the decision to leave and does not regret it, which is fair enough, but i feel any ill feeling we had against him should be taken back now.
The position with Tomas Rosicky is very worrying, as it looks like his season is over which makes his contribution to the cause very minimal. If surgery is not the answer his future is surely in doubt, which is a shame as he was an Arsenal type of player, lets hope they can rectify the problem and have him firing on all cylinders next season

Concur

the most advantageous thing for us this weekend is chelsea plays twice and both tough matches..so they wont be able torest too many players…

as far as our slump…i dont have too much confidence just faith….hope tht our boys will rise to the occasion..and someone needs to up the confidence..flamini and gallas have a work at hand spare the football…

btw a scary post by arseblog sent a chill down my spine….and for me …i dont find enf reason to defy his logic…god forbid!!

can we please not comment about Rosicky’s injury problems any longer??

I hope that he will be sold in the summer to whoever is willing to cough up some half decent dosh .. probably Inter .. as he is unfortunately not able to keep himself fit .. its not his fault, nevertheless we need a fit player to replace him

The difference with 2002-2003 was that the team was by far the best in the premiership we should have won three titles on the bounce.

This side has out-performed our pre-season expectations although you worry what the mental consequences will be of a title less season.

Both Man Utd and Chelsea will drop points before the end of the season the key is how few will we drop.

We should remember Eboue is playing his first season at right wing. He however has now atained a reputation with referees as a cheat and will struggle to get decisions his way.

so Hleb got tapped up by Inter the eve of our Milan game?? well well Alex .. why dont you transfer your outstanding goals record to the Serie A?? bye bye ..

Morning All,

Another great article! It is faith that we need now! I would like to think we are all over the ’slump’ of the weekends draw and have raised our positivity. We all had to, the general mood amoust Gooners has been pretty low the last few days! However, Man U WILL drop points on the run in, so the season in my eyes is still in our hands! It is, as a couple of players have come out and said, win every game!

That HAS to start with a win against Chavski on Sunday. I am not too worried about the Man U Vs Pool’ result, I think Man U will win, but we have to overcome Chavski, put them out of the race and use it as a springboard to getter the fire back in the team. Ade, needs to score. Get his confidence back and all we need is the first goal and we will be fine. We need to get into the habit of scoring early, as soon as we do that we can have anyone. As soon as a team comes on to us we have them their for a thrashing. They score early, settle for a 1-0 put all 11 behind the ball and we cant counter that.

But hold on……what team in the world can easily breakdown a team with 11 players behind the ball? Everyone always says, the way to stop Arsenal scoring and frustrating Arsenal is to put 11 behind the ball. I dont know why this is always pointed at Arsenal. No team finds that easy, just people are so scared of Arsenals pace on the break they do it more to us than other teams.

Ok sorry, rant and diversion over!

Players,

Eboue….Well I have to say I did prefer him at right back but Sagna is better, however losing him would mean there is no cover and the squad would be weaker! That is not good. We should try and keep him but change his view, make him more of a squad player and not a first team regular. Sagna is better than him at right back, and he simply does not have enough going forward. His shots are often wild, he dives ALL the time. He has pace and I did like him at the begining of the season hitting the byline and dinking the ball in but recently he has been ineffective. A good squad player but that it at the moment. Again though maybe learning his trade in midfield and could be a wizz in the future, just not yet!

Rosicky, unfortunately it is looking like his fitness is a serious concern ‘have to see if it goes away….’ sounds like there is nothing the medical team can do but wait. It is devestating because he is an AWSOME player when fully fit and firing on all cylinders, Arsenal have only seen a glimpse of his game. A real real shame!!

While I find Eboue’s endless frowns, dives and malicious assaults at least as disruptive and embarrassing as Jens’ set piece insanity was last year (how calm and constructive set pieces have been without him…), purely as a player I think that he is being judged a season early. He just got to this position. So far he has shown the ability to penetrate, round his marker, and often cross well, but like at least 4-5 other players in or close to our first team is probably a year away from developing the shot that would make him really valuable.
And, as said above, he offers cover for Sagna, too.
That said, unless he gets some psychological help (seriously and for his own good), I think he is too disruptive to play for - or represent the values of - this club.

will Rosicky be fit throughout the Euros? You can bet he will be.

I also found that article about Eboue disgusting on Gunnerblog. everyone knows I am not Eboue’s biggest fan but this is beyond the pale. no Arsenal player should ever be embarrased like this by his own fans.

I have read a lot about how Arsenal will respond now that expectations are not as high because everyone thinks we’ve blown it. While I agree that the psycology of the situation is in our favour and we are not many points behind (even after tonights results), the fact is there are real problems within the team right now. we have not drawn 4 games because we are mentally weak. the problems are physical. Our 3 most key players (Hleb, Cesc and Ade) are all knackered and have not shown enough invention in any of the recent draws. without those players finding form we cannot win 8 league game in a row. as I say I dont think their loss of form is in the mind and thats why I am still worried.
of course, every bad run had to come to an end at some point. we can only pray that ours is this sunday.

yh i agree… we all have our own opinion on certain players, but now is not the time to be getting our players down. Eboue was one of the more brighter players against Boro, he gave 100% going forward, hes a converted defender so dont fault him for his efforts. Time to get behind our team.. gunnerblog really shocked me with that, although it is amusin there is no place for that sort of thing. Demoralising the players wen we struggling for form aint gonna help.

Lets get behind the team for chelsea peopple..!!

I’m feeling good about beating Chel$ki, it feels like it time for them to lose a game at home and lose the record, and what better team to do that than Arsenal.

I’ve been optimistic all season, but I have to say if we lose that game…the psychological effect of the loss to Chel$ki will be the end of our title push. We may continue with the CL try, but I think the league will be hard. Not because we don’t have good players, but mainly psychological.

I have to say I’m surprisingly surprised to say this, but I will give credit when credit it due.
Ethan your comments today are much welcomed than earlier ones. Although I still do not agree, that as much as I adored TH14…his momentum has long gone…and his return can only hurt the team and not help. When Arsene lets someone go, it means they have a one way ticket. Remember PV4 and the rumors of his return back to Arsenal? Never happened.

G4E

MARCUS

dont think you can tell eboue to take a lesser role and become more of a squad player , he has played a lot of games as right back and an equal amount this year . I wouldnt want to be the one who tells him he will swap places with theo next season … and hence cut his playing time in 1/2 or maybe even quarters .

I think Traore needs to play both left and right back positions and theres your cover for next season .
If you dont give him time on the pitch next season he will be off like the rest of them . Eboue is expendable and like i said earlier thru no fault of his own !

The problem i think that will be faced next season is you have more young players coming thru who will want 1st team activity , i just dont need it turn into another liverpool rotation policy only with lesser quality output than them !

Arsene needs to send these boys out to the wigans and derbys of the EPL on loan ! not let them sit there and fester .

G4E

not that i really care what you think , but our squad has proved they can do it without him , im sure they wont feel so brittle against him if in a pipe dream he did return

rest easy

I never thought I would say this and never thought it would ever happen or even be suggested after he left, but TH14 back up top with Ade and RVP would be a dream for next season!

Wake up Marcus…….IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!

As said above by G4E, if you turn your back on Arsenal, there is no way back with Wenger. I agree with that and agree with that philosophy…but HENRY??? Would we really not want him back?

Up the the Arse

I would love to see Henry back Marcus, there is no player in this world I enjoyed watching more than Henry…no Pele, no Maradona, no one I loved more than him. But, we have to be realistic in our dreams….

TH14 is part of our great History, History may repeat itself, but history never move backward.

G4E

Well i only suggested it as earlier he did state he wants to return in some capacity , i also here rumors he’s not really happy out there on the wing , then you get barca interested in eboue …

Are barca using us like a ‘player’ video library ?

and G4E for once i agree with you he was a pleasure to watch , and he always gave you a glimmer of hope whilst he was on the pitch , I think arsene would have him back in a heart beat after this seasons form in front of goal ..
I mean who wouldnt want the best striker to ever grace the earth back ? he misses his daughter and im sure he will play again for a uk club ..

Its probably a pipe dream but i get this feeling ..

TH14 has got a back problem .. its a proplapsed disk issue which leads to sciatica..very bad for anybody (me included) not to mention a pro footballer .. better leave the big boy alone now and he isnt stupid enough to come back anyway..
he’ll remain the best player that has ever played for us

now we need to buy a Dudu replacement .. I have not been convinced by Dudu this season .. me reckons he’s a bit slow and his touch isnt that great either .. thats why he cost only 8MM .. and not 18MM..or 22MM like Torres

You guys are crazy, dreaming of TH14 returning, but then I must be too…because I can see the older, somewhat slowed TH playing in DB’s role just off the main the striker and shredding defenses with his passing. Somehow I doubt it will happen.

Since we are dreaming here (and I just woke up, and besides this is sports!), I am waiting for reaction from the bloggosphere and chatboards after Eboue goals put us past Chelsea and then Man U …

I have calmed down a bit after the weekend, and for some reason i am feeling more confident!

I dont know why, but i fancy us to turn Chelsea over at the weekend…

Anyone got any recommendations for a nice lunch on the Kings Road before the game on Sunday?

Yup i agree with you BB i haven’t been totally convinced by dudu either , however i think he’s better than a certain other striker .. He seems like he has the intelligence in front of goal and the skills to boot ! .
Its possibly the English game that he needs to come to terms with . Lets face it , its very seldom a striker can hit the ground running , even torres took 6 months .. But look at him now ! my pre-season pick was torres, babel and ribery . im disappointed in arsene for finding unknowns sometimes . like ive said to yogi in the past , there usually is a reason you pay top money for top players … its all well and good if you can manufacture a player , but we really didnt manufacture cesc , we still paid heavily for him like 2 million for a 16 year old ..
I think arsene had to turn him into a star ,
Hleb seems to have been tapped up by inter .. not sure whats going on there …
and likewise speak of the dead henry has been linked with my nemesis Manchester city !

he denied it of course but then he denied he was leaving for barca too !

hey BB what is going on with rosicky ???

Ribery would of been a perfect signing for us - by all accounts he has had an impressive season at Bayern.

He would of given us that something extra in tight games.

Hey ho - hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Rosicky is made of glass Ethan - thats the problem.

Matt it wasnt really hind sight RE : ribery .. lets face it .. it came down to the almighty dollar !

Everyone knew he would be a great signing for the club ..

I think tonight will be a good night for Arsenal, it could be a big night.

I fully expect Spurs to beat Chelsea, can’t see that going any other way. And I fancy Bolton to get something tonight. Man Utd look to be on similar form to ourselves, haven’t their last three games been the struggling 1-0 win against Lyon, the FA Cup defeat to Portsmouth and the 0-1 horror performance against Derby?

So a good night with Chelsea failing to pick up three points, and a big night if Bolton can get something.

As for our fans, depressing to see the lack of support throughout the forums. It didn’t take Arseblog long to return to form, he wants Hleb dropped for Walcott over the ice cream incident. Yes, lets kiss our Premier League chances goodbye over an ice cream.

No, the up’s and down’s of a title race are nothing new to long-term fans who have seen it all before, but the lack of support is. Perhaps it’s not new, it’s just in the modern day with modern technology streams, we get to hear the constant criticism from our own supporters. Previously, the only experience of this was listening to supporters on the way to the match, in the chip shop or on the tube, you could roll your eyes and move away, now it’s constant, in your face bollocks from all directions. The net result is that now I feel the battle within me against the media, the opposition, and 75% of our own supporters.

Sorry but David Bentley saying Theo’s in the position he was three years ago underlines how much of a cunt he is.

Theo has multiple Champions League appearances and 2 goals. Theo’s in a title race.

Bentley’s bleating. Someone tell him to shut up.

few observations for the day, firstly the players should keep their mouths shut, i do not think it is constructive to be saying we must win something or the season is a bust etc, they are setting themselves up for failure. just get on with picking the season back up again.

as for helb it is yet just another sign of how the game is full of mercanaries, if he did meet them he should sod off. as for kssing the season goodbye his performances other than the night after the meeting have been appalling specifically wigan and boro,. and walcott could not do any worse. flamini is another one, it does look like there is a serious chance that he will be on his way, very sad that the $50k a week isn’t enough for him. he has had 3/4 of a wonderful season and i truly take my hate off to him for sticking with it and proving his worth. at the same however he is not the finshed article not even a full international. if he wants to sod off to juventus he can also go. not sure why we all allow ourselves to get so emotionally involved these people that care so much less than we do!!!

end of rant.

And before everyone bums themself to death about Ribery, he’s scored 6 in the weak German league this season, including at least 1 from the penalty spot. Rosicky (who has also scored 6 in the league) therefore has scored as many goals as him.

Ribery doesn’t have a great goal-scoring record, and if Wenger had signed him, we’d be full of wise heads here in saying that Wenger shouldn’t have signed a non-goal-scoring winger when we already had one in Hleb.

i heard sunu will be moving into the 1st team next season , he plays down the left wing - just like vela so im sure we wont see any wingers being signed in the off season …

lets hope these kids hit the ground running ..

i also don’t understand why clubs complain about the other clubs informally speaking to players, tey all do it. i blame the players, no one forced cashley or in this case helb to meet people the night before huge games.

hboy, I hope it’s not as high as 75% - it’s just the naysayers on the internet who seem to shout the loudest. I’m not hearing the same from gooners I know who don’t go on the internet or generally speaking at matches.

BB, I disagree with what you say about Eduardo. He had a lot to offer the team including goals. The fact that he cost £8 million is because he came from Croatia not Spain. What exactly had Torres done for Athletico Madrid to justify his price tag?

i m nt sure ant u guys..but i never thot rosicky cud make up for pires in terms of effectiveness…flashy i guess…but not effective…runs too much square probing for an opening rather than making an opening.

yes i agree dan , they either do it via the media or their agents .. it makes little difference really ..

sounds like diaby is going to italy !

whooopiee

all in all to get third in the prem given our resources relative to the big two isn’t bad, let us not forget both Liverpool and Totttwats have spent large recently, my only annoyance is that a couple of seasons ago went cashly cuntly was leaving wenger rather that getting a specialist left- back for that season tried all sorts of options in that position which patently didn’t work Cigan being the worst, it is a thin line between winning and loosing and you cannot have a mediocre player playing out of position when you’re competing with Man U and Chelsea, they don’t ever get in that situation. Wengers stubbornness very nearly cost us our champions league spot, he is doing the same again with the left side of midfield, Roskinjury is like Helb and Diaby a central attacking midfielder, unless we sort out that weakness we won’t win anything again…

You, Eboue’s haters, you are a disgrace. And I should add that you don’t know much about football. writing on this blog doesn’t make you any football manager. I still believe that he(Eboue) remains a better defender than Sagna. He just needed someone like Sagna to challenge him at right-back instead of Hoyte; that’s the only difference. I like Sagna though, for his commitment and energy.
I observed that Eboue has been a key in many derby games we had with this team. For example, at the Emirates, against Manu, when Eboue was withdrawn, Sagna was all over the place and the goal came naturally for the Manc. Last Sunday, Eboue kept defending as well as going forward; we just needed a finisher I believe we don’t have since Eduardo is out. Ade can score some fantastic goals; but I just have the feeling that he will be desappointing when we need most his goals.
You should question yourself as why Barcelona would went Eboue if he was not that good.
I just want him to improve his shooting when he is in the penalty box.
If you don’t know players who should Arsenal leave next summer; I am going to tell you, right now as I did it for Th14 last season to Arseblog.
- Rosicky should leave Arsenal next summer, as he failed in his second consecutive season to play one in ten of games available.
- RVP should leave next season, as he is in his fouth season at Arsenal; the ‘new’ Berkamp is just a lightweight pony who passes more time in hospital than on football pitch.
- Hoyte, nice fellow, but not good enough, another English boy to replace him.
- Gilberto should leave for losing a form that it doesn’t look like he will ever retrieve.
- Then, Lehman should, as I want to see Fabiansky get more first team games; I still don’t trust Almunia in big games though.
That’s about it.

I always thought Gooners were a pessimistic bunch. most of us look at the worst case scenario but we always keep a degree of hope on the horizon. I dont think thats changed in recent years but I think the internet possibly encourages the moany kind of culture that we see all day long.

If Hleb and Flam leave we are buggered. but I dont think they will in the end.

lc, how can you say you want RVP to leave. his injuries have mostly been from knocks or twists and not from chronic persistant problems such as hamtrings and groins that we see from others like Freddie and Rosicky.
I think RVP could prove us all wrong and do a Clichy, who has rarely been injured since he came into the team full time. we all though he was a lost case. when RVP is in the team his goals to games ratio is fantastic and there are few other players that can score from half chances and from anywhere in and around the box like he can. he at the very least needs one more season to prove himself.

Would have to agree about lehmann, Gilberto, Hoyte and Rosicky though.

Gazzap, I have no doubt about RVP’s talent; but if he keeps getting injured as that ’s been the case for last successive three years; What are you expecting AW to do, if we had to end up with another trophyless season, which I won’t be surprised at all at the moment. RVP is currently our most improved finisher, but he doesn’t look like he will be able to play regularly as the result of what I have mentioned above. We need him fit. I really rate him, but I am really desappointed that we have to put all our faith on Ade who can’t even pass it.

Sorry to say it is all over.Any team that has to rely on Eboue and Diaby as wingers has no chance of winning the title. In 98 we had overmars in 02 and 04 we had Pires real quality.
Rvp is too injury prone and i bet Rosicky”s next game is the Czech”s first game in Euro 08.What is the point in having a player who cant play 3 games in a row.
Arsene”s biggest mistake was not signing Ribery.A bargin at £17 m

ic

i hear you , but who is going to want injury prone players ? arsene wont get rid of them either , and i also doubt he will get a bid for them anyhow! … unless he lets them go for next to nothing . but what top club would buy injury prone players ?

As much as i dont have a problem with eboue ,
arsene shortly, with the addition of vela and walcott have options , and with theo pushing for more time
(and sunu too it seems ), he will look at eboue and his positioning within the club im sure in the summer , if he stays he will be getting less time on the pitch thats for sure ..
but as a player i would always opt for Barcelona , why wouldn’t you if you were any individual wanting the best for their own career ?!

ic no need to get emotional about it .. its just opinion . But if you want to shout at anyone that would be arsene .

don
you bet your life that wenger will keep persisting with theo’s pace on the wing . and add vela into the fray they might surprise you next season , however .. Im more worried about whats left of this one currently .

Im with you on ribery !

so according to your analysis we have 3 18 year old sunu, walcott and vela for next year. glad we have learned from this year!!!!

Don i dont go with your bargain at £17 m for Ribery.
From all accounts he hasnt set the world on fire at Bayern, playing in a very average league with other top players his goal ratio is nothing special.
Im not saying he is not useful but at that price i know why Arsene said no after initially saying he was very interested.
Agreed i think we need a good winger in the Overmars/Robben mould but not at those silly prices.

DAN

what can you do with them dan ?
arsene has been buying youngsters like crazy .
there seems to be no let up in it ..
its a obsession ..

i feel the ‘arsene knows best brigade’ will have there day in the sun again , sooner or later one will turn good and all will be forgiven , we still wont win anything ,but they will admire how arsene will unearth talent of biblical proportions ..

they forget about all the bentley’s that were sold etc. ones who didnt make the cut .. stokes larrson, mumbva etc.. instead of buying promising youth and selling 5 or 6 who dont cut it , just get one or 2 players who will make a REAL difference to the team ..

if you look at the youthteam and people sitting in the wings aresene has got alot to choice from , but as ever they lack those 3 or 4 years of experience at the top level ..

they wont peak with us !
thats the problem ….
no one has that sort of patients , especially if your that good !

whatever the money men say about how much we have to spend we still cannot be run like chelsea and man u. those clubs happily spend £40m on players each summer without a flinch. Arsenal might have money to spend but thats because we have not spent very much for a few seasons now. its not because we are on the same level as the other two mentioned.
thats partly why £17m on Ribery or a player like him wont happen. wenger might well have 17m but he hasn’t go 17m to waste. if that player ends up not settling or getting his leg broken, Arsenal dont have another 17m to splash out as the other 2 seemingly can do at will.
wenger manages the club in a sounds financial way and can get quality players in for less than (or a lot less than) £10m regularly. we have to respect that and realise that this method of management is safe guarding the long-term future of the club.

wenger has had his fingers burnt with two of most expensive signings Wiltord and Reyes and lost a lot of money. his best buys have cost him less than 5m. I dont really have a problem with his methods. I have more a problem with the numbers of them he brings in. Had we got another 2 or 3 players of the same ilk (ie unknown but top quality) last summer I would have been pleased but I always felt this squad was too thin.

veteran

have you ever thought that ribery might preform better in our environment .. its pretty hard to judge someone playing in a totally differing league and then pass those sorts of judgments ?

Most frenchies make it at arsenal .. and our midfielders are top class! that would make him fit in perfectly .. he wouldn’t fail , and he would be resold by wenger in 4 or 5 years for roughly the same price

i cant see any problem with that ..

ethan you have a point. I mean look at Flam. we have had to suffer his growing pains. by that I mean when an 18 yo comes and plays first team football at Arsenal they are not the finished article. over the years, they develop into world class players because Arsene is patient with them and gives them chances.
what thanks or loyalty does that get you a few years down the line?? sod all. Juve et al come along and offer a huge signing on fee and suddenly loyalty means nothing at all.
while man u buy the finished product in Hargreaves, we buy the young unpolished version, but where is it really getting us if these players are not staying for life?

at least cesc looks like he wants to stay, but thats only because Barca have said they would never buy cesc back out of principle.

take Bentley. years in the academy, gets some games in the first team, has a loan spell etc. lots of patience and development and then one day, ‘Sorry Arsene, cant be bothered with this anymore, I want to play week in week out for Blackburn, see ya later’. all that investment of time in him is gone. the money we got for him was not a lot and was never likely to be used for a replacement so in effect the investment disppears into thin air.

I am not for one moment saying we should not develop young players, but we have to supplment it with the odd finished product as well. Eduardo was a good example of the sort of signing I like to see more of.

oh and why didn’t wenger buy that Wilson Palacios now at Wigan? he looks better than Diaby and Denilson already. if Flam leaves and clearly Gilberto will (and always was) leave and so had Diarra. our midfield could be looking very short by the summer. that was a mistake.

If you watch the AC Milan game, Hleb was upset for being sub’ed at the last minute…I thought that was weird?!

gaz

by the same token arsene never USUALLY looses too much on a player .. even with the ones you mentioned . with reyes money he bought a few players like sagna and dudu who could easily be sold for over 10m + now , broken legs an’ all !

the revenue he’s getting for the new stadium and
making $$$ on sold youth could easily fund one or 2 world class players now ..

if they failed he would sell them at profit and snow ball on again …

i think you are still in belt tightening mode from
when we had too !! whilst the stadium was being built .. He will need to strengthen the squad if
he wants to compete for all trophies next season

yup i said that to pat 4 /5 months ago ..
re : flamini … i also said to pat why wouldnt you leave ?

better wages .. the chance to play for a club rich in history ( as against us who in all honesty haven’t won much recently) , he has Italian roots , so to me it was really a no brainer ..
with hleb being tapped up - flamini suspect - rosicky injury prone .. it looks to me like my worst fear is coming to fruition ..
and with that going on what will cesc think ???

Arsene needs to give flamini the cash he wants as last i heard negotiations had stalled .
you know a player who signs on a free transfer usually gets a cash incentive for signing also ..
Its great for juve they pay him 1/2 a mil plus get a top class asset for free .. and flamini gets 500 000 + to get set up in his new country , playing for a club that will be in the C.L next season ..
try tell pat that thou ! :)

Ethan: I still don’t agree with you in some of your opinions, but your attitude is way more likeable lately.

Ribery may not of scored that many goals this year, but if you have seen him play he is more than capable of creating chances from nothing for his teammates.

He has been excellent every time i have seen him play - and constantly looks dangerous.

Still - he didnt come, so what difference does it make.

Rosicky is a great player, of that there is no doubt - it is such a shame he is constantly broken.

I had to change my ID sincere there are 2 Marcuses now.

I despair at gooners who keep going on about how AW should’ve brought in Ribery. I’m a huge Ribery fan and watched him regularly at Marseille (as well as on the French NT) and now at Bayern. I’d love to see him at Arsenal BUT — you’re all assuming he WANTED to come to England.

Ribery has been quoted in the French press many times in the past saying that he has no desire to come to England. And I’m dubious about him being willing to play under Wenger’s management. Ribery is a difficult character — AW knows this too.

As to Henry….take it from someone who knows….once you get sciatica, you are NEVER THE SAME AGAIN. You can still be very active but you are simply not as strong, not as consistent, not as efficient or precise. Henry can still put in some decent performances but he will never be the same again.

As to arseblogger’s comments re Hleb…I have to agree. If that’s what he’s doing the night before a huge CL game, he can f–k off. I know it’s naive to hope for loyalty from players nowadays but it’s still disappointing to see these kids so well nurtured by Arsene acting like this.

I still think he will sign though Ethan, the Italian league is a shambles with half empty stadiums and dull football.

Admitedly it has taken longer than I hoped but I will live on Wenger’s last words on the matter, we will sit down with him and it should be signed in March (Sorry Cant find the reference). And if he did go it would be just like Petit, Overmars, Vieira, Pires and Henry before him, he would regret the decision

You say why wouldn’t you go, well I like to think more of Why would you want to leave, his big buddies Cesc and Hleb are here, he is in a team that on the most part plays the best football in the World in the best stadium, A manager that does not only last a season or two has a lot of faith and belief in him, A team that gets further in the Champions League, the best training facilities anywhere and the best fans in the world that love him even when things are bad….and he wont get that in Italy. Honestly if he did go I would lose a lot of respect for him as it would be for financial not footballing reasons. I just think he is holding out for the right deal at Arsenal and knows he is in a strong position.

Cant see Hleb going either but if he does so be it, I think Hleb is replaceable, Flamini would be harder to.

didn’t take utd long!!!!!!!!!!

not to state the obvious or anything but we MUST win this weekend.

we are never going to catch utd!!!! they change 7 players from the last game and have won it in 20 minutes already. very depressing.

Nacho - what ever you argumentative ****

Pat ..

its all about the big bucks ..he wants payment equilibrium with cesc and Hleb . 80 k i think ?
Its gone from don’t be stupid ethan he will sign !
to ..errr i think he will sign :)
And i don’t think he will regret the decision because he will obviously will be paid 80k+ from juve ..
money or glory ? money or glory ?
MONEY :)

Dan
yup no surprises there , i dont know why they dont mark ronaldo , madness !
and flicking over to the chevski game ,cashleys challenge on hutton , i just wanted to bash him !
looks like a dudu challenge , and his mouth !cashley you need to die !.. Horrid tackle..

lampards tackle too doesn’t even get a free kick .
every spurs player is rolling around on the floor in pain ! i think our injury tally is about to get worse !

i think chelsea will push utd all the way and we will finish 3rd.

Havent changed my thoughts at all Ethan

In December I thought he would sign and I still do

If he was so keen to leave, then why has he not signed for an Italian Club already, after all he has had 2 1/2 months to talk to them. mmm maybe he really wants to stay at Arsenal and negotiations are continuing

He will get the deal that suits both parties. Are Cesc and Hleb already on 80k didnt know that.

no way helb is on 80k

Bolton & Spuds are just c*nts….they roll-over to Man Ure & Chel$ki and they play like mad against Arsenal….ba*tards.

Cant believe I am saying it but well done Spurs, thats the first time I have been jumping around the room to a Robbie Keane goal

need to win at Chelski on Sunday now, hopefully Liverpool can get at least a point too

In an interview on soccer saturday a few weeks ago Flamini said he will be at Arsenal next season. And none of our players are on 80k a week.

Ok, I take half of what I said back…at least the spuds had a tiny backbone

I see that Djourou was playing in midfield for the reserves. I wonder if Wenger sees that as his future position.

Could be Falmini’s replacement?

Yes, that’s the old ethan, I was missing him already!

Nice one Chelsea!!
