Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word But Belief Beats That

A common failing of this Arsenal squad, and the ones of the preceding two seasons, according to those whose opinion’s count (in their own minds at least) is that that they do not know how to close out a game when having a lead. It is not entirely correct but does have some merit in its argument with leads gained at Blackburn, Sevilla, Newcastle, Birmingham (home and away) but the results ended with points being dropped in respective competitions.

The reason for it? Well, Sevilla was team selection. The rest? Individual errors. Against Birmingham at The Emirates, poor marking allowed the equaliser, at St. Andrews it was an aberration by Clichy; I still cannot fathom out why we tried to play our way out of trouble at St James Park whilst, well, Jens has paid a heavy price for his costly lack of concentration at Ewood Park. The thread that is running through all of this is that there is not a collective problem with the team as such, more of individual lapses in concentration.

For Arsene, the problem is acute. It is not the same individual who is making the mistakes and therefore, it is not a problem with an easily identifiable solution. This issue has been compounded by the team being badly affected by the events at St Andrews yet they dug themselves out of this mindset to raise their game to an exceptional level at the San Siro. In many respects, that was similar to the rut that they were in when they went to the Bernabeu two seasons ago and won. The league form was poor by their standards, the title long gone then. Indeed, there is no doubt that the big games are not that much of an issue but it is the smaller teams who provide the stumbling blocks.

You might argue that it is experience which causes this. However, that argument falls down when comparing results since the ‘Invincibles’ won the title. The season immediately after was not one filled with inexperienced players, it was marred by injury. As was last season to key players. Both were wrecked title challenges before they began. This time, the squad have compensated until now. This brings us to the issue of confidence.

And that is where the problem resides. The good start to the season carried them a long way, covering for long term absences in the case of van Persie and so far shorter ones involving Rosicky. Kolo Toure’s departure to the African Cup of Nations was exacerbated by returning with an injury but Senderos deputised capably. However, it is in goalscoring where the body blows have been felt. The midfield is simply not chipping in with enough. Having sold Henry, the squad knew that they had to score collectively and they started well enough but the consistency has been lost.

The squad is full of creators but the hole left by Eduardo’s injury has put the pressure then transfers to the shoulders of Adebayor. With his regular quotient of goals having temporarily dried up, the blame is being pushed onto him but that ignores two salient facts. Firstly, no striker scores in every game. It simply does not happen; it did not when Henry was here, it did not before he arrived so why is there an expectation placed on Adebayor to improve on that? Secondly, he is still learning the trade. It is his first full season as a striker leading the line and you have to be extremely churlish to say that he has done anything other than excellently at the role.

Criticism of him being caught offside all of the time reeks of someone having an idea in their mind that cannot be changed and is devoid of an understanding of the issues of the game. All strikers push onto the last defender and generally run offside and then back on. Officiating cannot observe a ball being passed and the position of a player at the same time unless it is condensed into a small area of the pitch because as the Assistant is running they cannot look along a line of defenders and behind them at the same time. Unless they have Marty Feldman eyes. Instead the guess. They approximate and sometimes they get it right, others they get wrong. But to allege that Adebayor is offside more than other strikers is just plain wrong.

Back to the confidence. Before the season started, the midfield was known to be shot shy. Well, accurate shot shy. They have not been so this season, just goal shy. There have been plenty of accurate shots but conversion rates have not been as impressive. Goals started to come in the opening months but hit a dry spell. We lack goals from the flanks at the moment but it has been the case since Pires and Ljungberg were in their heydays. Calls for signing players who can score from those positions omit one point; the unbalancing nature to the squad.

It is a difficult balance to strike for the manager. He wants to build a squad that will last and by signing players, the message sent out is one that you are not quite ready yet so someone will come into cover for this. But what happens when those players are due for their moments in the sun and there is no space for them. Arsene’s philosophy has been to create rather than to sign, stars. It has been successful so far but based on a strong squad to begin with a decade or so ago. This time it is almost from scratch. What is needed is patience and it seems that it is in short supply now that things are going awry.

Let’s be honest, the team have over-performed this season. I thought we could finish second before the season started but expected that to be decided long before now. With eight games to go, the team are still fighting for the title. They could still do it. No team has dominated the top spot for more than a couple of weeks at a time. United have not suddenly ‘come good’, it is quite the opposite. They have been ploughing their furrow consistently since their blip that allowed us to go five points clear. If the title goes to Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge, they would argue they have deserved it. Possibly but I would argue that it has more to do with four consecutive Premier League draws by Arsenal.

Favourable results for Arsenal this weekend will see the race thrown wide open. Now is the time for the belief on and off the pitch to shine through.

‘til Tomorrow.

Great post Yogi, it feels so good to be sane.

Winning the premiership was never going to be easy for any team .. and one thing the everybody agrees on is the the one would be the closest in a long time … personally i feel the Gunners still have a Big Surprise.. there seem to perform well when pple expect them to roll over and die ..and i know the come may we would all celebrate

Quite right I think - strange isn’t it that the people now conceding the title on our behalf are the same that said that we were clearly going to lose 4th place? Every negative comment just becomes more inspiration to enjoy the fight.

Absolutely Sensational Post!

One of the best posts you have written Yogi. It will not becalm the chaotic demanding types, but it means a lot to those that believe and feel they understand the position of our football club.

Pray to God..thats what I can say

Nice piece. The season is not over yet and we will win the title!

Concerning Ade though, while I agree he deserves praise for the contribution he made and no one can doubt his commitment, I truely believe you have got it wrong on the small faults that have crept into his game. He is according to OPTA the most off-sided player in Britain. Now as you say, all strikers will be called off-side it is part of their game. However what makes a striker brilliant, such as Raul, Henry, Van Nistlerooy is the ability to time a run. Ade simply fails in this department. If you watched the Boro game their was a moment in the second half when Hleb was running with 3 defenders in front of him and Ade between them. He was already offside looking up towards Hleb as the 3 defenders moved closer to the attacker. Ade stayed routed, the crowd screemed for him to get onside, which he didnt. Advantage lost. Adebayor is a brilliant player, dont get me wrong and we are better for having him but I really think he has lost his focus because he wants the golden boot. I dont know, hopefully he scores a hat-trick this weekend.

yeah totally agree with adebayour losin his focus, cant really blame him tho, wuldnt you if you was suddenly being called the best striker in the premiership and every1 singing your praises. remember hes still young like the rest of our squad, hes been amazin this season and looks like a real top top striker for us already. The pressure turned to him to bag the goals for us, which is kind of unfair on him, hopefully wiv van Persie back they can share that pressure an bring the title home.

Nice post by the way.. i think the media have gone along way to dent our confidence, i dont like to think that every1 is against us, but time and time again they keep proving us wrong. For us to be in contention for the title at this stage i would expect a bit more positivity, on our day we can beat any1, lets start at Chelsea on the weekend… come on u gooners..!!

Great balanced post. Well-written too.

Who would have imagined that Wenger and this team could be at this point under pressure because they over-achieved? Incredible really.

I heard someone on radio saying yesterday that George Graham was a better manager for Arsenal and Wenger has done nothing. This guy simply wanted a return to crosses whipped in, and an Ian Wright type knocking them in. Classic British style. I think that’s the heart of the matter here.

What scares me is that when certain dynamics of mass psychology strike, reason gets thrown out of the window.

Very good post - a voice of sanity amongst the all the fair weather whingers.

Trennon, where’d you get that stat? I’ve been looking for offside stats for a while. Can’t seem to find any.

But you do get the feeling that the game on Sunday is make or break. A win would see our confidence surge back and we will ALL be talking of the title again. I think a defeat will finish us off. that wouldn’t have been so if we could have won a couple of the last 4 league games. A draw would not be conclusive either way - and to me seems the most likely result.

I disagree with Hansen who said, these draws are all down to the Man U cup game. that is a blatent dig at wenger for putting out a weakened side. he is just twisting the knife on a club that he hates. No it was the 2-2 draw at Birmingham that has caused this bad run. if you just look at the reaction of the players at the final whistle at St Andrews you will know that that day felt like ten defeats all at once. We all felt that there had been a death in the family, what with the Eduardo incident and the way we gave the win away. it hit us so hard that the players did not have enough in the tank to react against Villa.
that combined with giving everything we had left in Milan has killed us. Milan was played like a cup final. it was not played like a last 16 game with 15 games of the season to play. we shot our bolt.
now we are re-building, but I dont know whether we can re-build in time. I kept saying ever since Villa, we need to see the reaction and the building process and some momentum, but it has never arrived. we still look bogged down and going through the motions and its painful to watch.

I want to be optimistic but I am finding it very hard to be right now.

yes yogi ,

i saw the hidden scribes ..
But you are truly kidding yourself !
please watch the boro game and tell me in all honesty if you think any of ades off side were onside,
the goal ? well the officials have came out and explained that . So that isnt in question.. It was offside pain and simple ! Yes no skriker scores in every game , but how many EPL games has it been now ?
If it wasnt for walcott setting the table for ade in the C.L the drought would be continuing on longer
,also i remember reading 1/2 of your yes brigade stating walcott shouldnt take any part in that clash

Im not quite sure what games youve been watching but it isnt any that have contained AFC !
i really cant be bothered watching the game a 4th time to count how many times he spilled the ball !
I orginally thought its because we are playing a 4-5-1 and he cannot take the pressure , but even with a 4-4-2 his 1st touch is RUBBISH ! his lack of understanding the passing game is so unquestionable i cannot believe you also defend him ! i honestly thought you knew far better than half of your pleb followers here . I really shows me your vision in some areas are spot on , and in others your out there with the fairies !
henry won the golden boot many times ! thats the striker we need , thats the striker arsene is used too ! we have the cash , the rest is just common sense !
henry averaged over 30 + goals a year in the epl!

that is also on average 1 a game .. Id expect any co- striker to pick up the crumbs and dudu did so !
your arguement holds no water ! you admit yourself he is still young and learning . well if so put him in the reserves !

give him the limited time that theo gets . because
RVp is coming back and he will show us what a striker is all about and walcott will force ade out !

paul against the whingers?
so your happy with our recent form ??
you all have blinkers on !
read any other blog ! ,the arsenal masses aren’t happy,
you guys here are all on zanacs !
or acid …
grow some .. and voice your opinion ..
sanity? you think talking like your talking is sanity?
you are truly a lost being !

hi im a arsene knows best supporter , we gave it a try this year ! we did better than last year , we are still learning .i love ade hes great and still learning. theres always next year ..and the next .. and the next…

sad .. sad… you are all sad little men !

Well done YW.

Danny sums it up perfectly.

‘Let’s be honest, the team have over-performed this season’

I would not completely agree with that. I always thought, that with a fair wind, we had a decent chance because there was a lot of quality show last season, largely spoilt by correctable errors.

We have not had a fair wind however, the Eduardo incident being particularly significant, so your comment now becomes true.

The good thing is that this team is a long long way from peaking.

That is no guarantee that it will ever win anything, of course, but I would be surprised if they don’t have to extend the trophy room at the Emerates.

Don’t confuse patience with a lack of passion.

Ole,

Although your comment is true, I loved GG & would have liked to see what he could do with more high class players at his disposal. He originally had more in his locker than kick & hope. Players like Rocky & Paul Davis would be great in the current side.

Agree with Gazzap, but the run of 4 draws need to be put into perspective. If the penalty had not been awarded or Clichy had put the ball into row z I think we would be talking a different story here. A draw at home against Villa is not a great result nor is it a disaster. The result against Wigan was a poor result but after the game midweek it was always going to be a difficult match, also remember that Man U and Chelsea both lost - Chelsea with a strong side against Barnsley. What we need now is a confidence boost as the team seem to be second guessing themselves. Hopefully a good result(s) at the weekend will give them a second wind.

All we can do is get behind the team - COME ON THE ARSENAL

Ethan - I don’t remember Henry regularly getting over 30 goals a season in the league. I thought it was usually 25 ish (Still an excellent return). Also he would have to score 38 league goals a season to average 1 a game. I do not think that is possible in the modern league. You’re expectations are unrelistic regarding Ade and who is the striker that we should have bought in the summer?

marc ,

ruud VN is a great proven EPL striker , Anelka given our midfield would have been sensational . Torres even has shown great skill even with liverpools static midfield . There are plenty of options available .
And given that a TOP CLASS CLUB like us with our sort of ground and facilities you would expect it .

The problem lays fairly on a strikers shoulders .
are midfield are using ade as the target man !
They are doing there job , they give him the ball in the box ,and the wingers are supplying the crosses ! he needs to keep his end of the bargain.

yes henrys scores were 30 g - 37 apps
32app-25g -
32app-27g

he scored in at least 8 goals in every 10 games !
i think his last season was 16 from as many ..
but a truly remarkable striker , a lot of fans claim anelka would have been better .. and given our midfield and there pure creativity , you have to demand more !!! anyone who cant see that isnt worth there salt !

eto - boran - wagner - fred .. anyone but ade !

“We lack goals from the flanks at the moment but it has been the case since Pires and Ljungberg were in their heydays. Calls for signing players who can score from those positions omit one point; the unbalancing nature to the squad.”

may I just ask you Yogi, what is unbalancing about buying decent football players into your squad??

that surely sounds like a weird concept??

so, according to you, reinforcing the squad by buying goal scoring wingers is a destabilizing act??

who are you kidding and please explain??

http://blog.huqing.net

Ethan - No arguments regarding Henry’s ability but you’re suggested replacements. Are you sure? Van Nistleroy was pretty much detested by all Arsenal fans - Anelka not exactly popular with his previous and Torres, great player and what would he do with better players around him in a team that play good attractive football. Unfortunately Torres went to Liverpool because of Benitize so we could not have got him anyway.

Plenty of options? 2 players not acceptable and 1 not available.

What about Darren Bent for £16 million? (Just kidding!)

This is why Wenger is such a good manager he finds players that fit the bill 9 times out of 10 at a low price who go on to be superstars.

No one is happy with the recent performances but please at least show a little faith.

you can never blame players for bad performances. we have seen plenty of proof that Ade is a good striker who scores lots of goals, and therefore you cannot criticise him. the buck always stops with the manger. if Ade is tired and underperforming then wenger has overused him and is refusing to rest him in favour of Bendtner. do not blame Ade.
I am not saying wenger is a bad manager because he is not, I am just saying every performance has a reason behind it and wenger made decisions and has to live with the consequences. he crossed his fingers that Cesc and Ade could play all season, but after 30 games its proven that they cannot. not really wengers fault though. at the times when Ade needed a rest who could have come into the team? RVP was injured and Bendtner looked inexperienced.
however right now, I would have Nik B in the team instead of Ade.

ethan: I do agree that we need a striker that’ll regularly get 20-25 in the league a season. If Adebayor goes on to get that this season will you stop fucking bleating?

BB

Read the next paragraph of the post, it is explained there. Nothing weird about the concept, it’s called man management.

YW

Perhaps we should remind ourselves that as someone said earlier, it is Ades 1st season as senior striker so i dont really think its fair to critisise a return of 18 goals with 8 games to go. Only 2 people have scored more and both were bought for a lot more money than we paid. You’ve also got to think about the likes of Rooney & Drogba. Not exactly banging them in are they?
Lets hope that his confidence returns this weekend with a goal or two.

Opta stats appear conclusive that Ade has been flagged offside more than any other premiership player. I think he has suffered recently from the adelation heaped on him, why talk about the golden boot in the press especially as Torres has now more PL goals. Anyone who thinks motivating colleagues by calling them shit and then headbutting them is suspect in my book. He needs to concentrate on his workrate and control.

I totally concure that young players make mistakes we are unfortunate that the one at Birmingham was compounded by a poor refereeing decision.

Tevez and Rooney arn’t the most prolific goal scorers. Most of Ronaldo’s goals come from break aways where he is able to drift into the penalty area while defenses are over-stretched. Our recent play has not stretched defences indeed the players have resorted to receiving with their backs to the ball like last season.

People should stop whinging and moaning. Blogs have been full of unbalanced comments. The stadium is blighted by the lack of atmosphere and empty seats as the team strives for equalisers/winners in the last few minutes. If we don’t believe then why should the players!

Wenger has chosen a particular path and we have relished 80% of the season it is disappointing that such a promising position has been lost but there is still an outside chance of turning things round.

Neither Chelsea nor Man Utd are actually playing exceptionally well either as exits in the FA Cup show the form team at the moment is probably Liverpool. Just apity we’ve drawn them in the CL

I’ve only been reading a while (1 season) but I’m already finding Ethan a little trying….

Why not write your own blog? Your comments are as long as Yogi’s post. I might well read it.

Thanks again for a great post. I’m keeping the faith.

it’s a thin line between success and failure and Edwardo’s injury was probably the point when our challenge faltered, his overall contribution to the team was fantastic, especially his ability to play wide left and allow Helb space to operate alongside Ade, a lack of a specialist left sided midfielder has cost us. helb has been outstanding alongside Abe, but on the left without Edwardo allowing him inside, he has been average, the key injury has been to Rosicyi, Helb isn’t a left midfilder he plays centrally, Van Percie for all the Hype has never been anything like as consistent as Edwardo and is far too rusty and selfish to be thrown in now, I’d consider pushing Clishey forward and bring Trare in and playing helb up top, as the moment Rosicky and Diaby are out indefinitely; not to wenger sign some more robust players

ole yes i will !
if he scores a goal a game for the next 8 games to get his tally to at least 26 ! i will consider him coming of age !
but he needs to be a team player who can pass the ball about , it is admirable that he tries to do and go for glory , but it just aint working ! and timing your run off the back of a defense isnt a hard thing to do , i dont need to be taught tactics off side traps 101 … however ade does !

russ
the thing you need to realize with our limited strike options he has had more playing time than anyone with HIS lions share of opportunities !
He needs to convert those opportunities or we need to find differing personnel !
19 goals in 30 games isnt a good return when looking at him as our strike force ONE AND ONLY!

I just watched football focus and all pundits stated arsenals decline is brought about by lack of scoring and finger pointed to ade ! THANKYOU ! i think id prefer to believe pundits with years of experience than G4E ! but in all honesty it is common sense !
you guys blaming our midfield for the lack of goals
,if you dont see hleb -clichy-sagna -cesc-flamini all looking for ade in the final 3rd your all blind as a bat ! They are doing there job !slotting the passes in ! ade needs to do his !

and marc i gave you 4 other options too !
also robinho .. sneijder ,huntleear - dutch or brazil strikers .. plus other up and coming talent pato bojan etc .. and dont tell me we cannot get them , we throw money at any club we will get who we need !

“Neither Chelsea nor Man Utd are actually playing exceptionally well either as exits in the FA Cup show the form team at the moment is probably Liverpool. Just apity we’ve drawn them in the CL”

Why so glass half empty? Why is the last sentence not “Brilliant that they are the form team going in to Old Trafford this weekend?”

vivb

Ade has been flagged offside more than any other premiership player.

thankyou

can you read it .. ?? yogi’s gang?

nola

i think liverpool can do it against man U ,torres is on fire , and they need the points ..thats enough motivation for raffa !

the problem is can we beat chelsea ?
it will be a interesting weekend which will give us more of an insight to the direction of the title race !

chelsea play spurs on thursday it could be a factor ! but our strikers need to fire .. because to claim 3 points we need goal (S) in the back of the net against a strong defensive team !

Wenger won’t buy because he has invested in youth why strangle Merida, Vela, Randell, Lansbury, Brazite, Freeman, Gibbs before they get a chance to shine.

I only raised the Liverpool point as although they are playing Man Utd on Sunday we play them 3 times in 8 days.

I hope and we have seen over the last 2 seasons that we play better against the better teams who are more inclined to attack rather than Middlesborough’s 11 man defence.

Ive noticed a pattern !

all the realistic , thinkers come on at this time of the day, later is when you get the zanac’s kids on with there hippy psychedelic kaleidescope vivbs , stating peace man we are doing better dude this year chill man ! whooaaa!

or the name calling little bytches who havnt got one ounce of footballing brain amongst them ,

lincoln you shouldnt be on til later ! :)

if Liverpool lose to united, their form will whither like a dying flower in the frost. they are quite fragile, but I admit they have been on a good run. United have been LUCKY recently with their league results. they have not played any better than us but they have played against poor teams and have just managed to win them. Chelsea look somewhere in between. their 1-0 at sunderland was hardly convincing. its not the others I am worried about, its us. we seem to be having some difficulty in scoring at the moment and thats the worry.

vivb

if you look at the c.l draw there is all likely hood that if we progress we will face liverpool - chelsea and then man U !

is this the domestic league ?? :)

ethan: let’s watch and see then. Knowing you, if he scored 30 you’ll say the standard is 40.

vivb .. and how on earth are we going to turn all of these guys into super players worthwhile wearing the Arsenal shirt?
by giving them 5 games a season in the CC team??
and playing the odd game in the reserves??

the fact is .. these guys will never shine if they stay at Arsenal as they wont get playing time

its bloody obvious, aint it??

we are fooling ourselves if we belive that these guys can make it with 5 to 10 games a season

look at Cesc and please tell me .. he is the ONLY one that played every game since he is 17 .. and he succeeded

we should stop buying 16 year olds and pretending that we can turn each and every of them into a super star .. by using Cesc’s example

Th14/PV4 and Pires were established players before they joined AFC

TH14 was part of the French 98 squad
PV4 had shone brilliantly at Cannes .. then a 1st division team and went to Milan
Pires .. no need to mention.. nearly won the league single handedly for Metz before moving to Marseille

its one thing to buy players that had a bad spell somewhere but that are established talented pros and another to turn every young kid into a super hero

it kills me .. as much as I would love to see these guys succeed at AFC, they wont get the chance to do so logistically.. we would need two feeder clubs for this to happen where we can park the players

also..look at Anelka .. he was the only guy that came through at this time at AFC ..

also .. Diaby’s agent .. a certain Roger Boli who won the CL with Marseille, is trumpeting a move for his player to Italy .. where he played himself ..

what about Flamini?? is he gonna sign??

the more I think, the more I am convinced that there is very poor people management going at Arsenal!!

but vivb ,
you know some time arsene is forced to spend .
we needed a R.B so we got sagna .. he out laid the cash .. we lost th14 we outlaid the cash on dudu.

hleb cost us 10 mil 3 years ago … Im sure he knows we are coming up short in the striking department .
He will use this time to qualify a strike team .. well lets hopee he does ! if not i cannot see any other option but to bring in 1 world class striker !

eboue is clearly replaceable , with theo pushing for more time and wengers belief he should be on the R.W .. vela coming into the team arsene will predictably follow suit with him on the wing .
Id take barca’s interest in eboue and do a swap + cash … for one of there strikers !

lets hope .. And no ive got nothing against eboue , but he seems like he’s been kicked about to much in the line up for me to think arsene takes him really seriously . he is a bit of a diver thou , and that is a great skill to have in spain :)

ethan i kinda agree with your posts. though some may say that adebayor is only experiencing his first full season as a striker, we shouldnt blame him and all, i find his lackluster performance in recent matches, the least to say, disheartening.

arsenal being a world class club, i dont see any “shame” in brining in world class strikers. perhaps ade could learn a thing of two from them. not only that, strikers tend to get injured easily and i think arsene should buy some strikers as substitutes…

we cant always rely on the young guns such as vela and walcott, they r jus too young to be scoring consistently in matches. i find eduardo a brilliant striker out front alongside with ade but with him gone, the arsenal team is weakening.

the good thing is that now with RVP back, we COULD be scoring more goals, though it is unlikely he will be scoring hat tricks soon.

BB

dead right what is the good of buying all this talented youth and not playing them ?!

i suggested sending them out on long term loans !
but that can be disastrous too . Unless they are played every week like vela ,and in a good quality club it can stunt them just like he is doing to theo !

he needs to start buying 21 + year olds !
and pay a bit more ..
ones that have shown potential in other clubs around the world and are good enough to be handed over 20 games a season without arsenals over all fabric being tested ! I do agree its too much for ade to be given this role , and thats why i keep coming back to wenger …
Torres robinho and bojan are the type of youth we should be scouting , with 7 - 8 years ahead of them and plenty of skill already , when you think that ade is almost 24 he should be far more advanced if he is the skillful striker that people are claiming , the problem is he really is just a poor mans claim of a great striker … there are plenty of better potential candidates out there ..

BB

we should stop buying 16 year olds and pretending that we can turn each and every of them into a super star .. by using Cesc’s example

you know why arsene wont stop buying youth !
he doesn’t want to pay an arm and a leg and they can be turned into cash like Jeremie larrson , bentley ,pennant mumbva etc…
almost the selling club mentality that we have been labelled with in recent years .
Nothing is wrong with that but its pretty depressing to see them go out and be successful at other clubs isnt it ! scoring against us ! proving a point against us !
the arsene knows best brigade will have trouble
feeling this unbiased vivb , but im sure most of the level headed bloggers will know what i mean !

It depends on what the issue is. I think there’s nobody that’ll say we don’t want Arsene to strike a very good striker.

However I do think there are some people who views of real life are based on playstation who deny the obvious which is that Adebayor has done very very well for us this season, and done as well as any striker in the league.

What’s wrong with buying youth? All the world’s best players at the moment are kids. And it’s a moronic idea that you can’t win anything with kids. Some of the greatest most dominant football sides ever were based on kids.

And talking about spending: Since when have Arsenal got success by spending big sums for players? Can somebody point me to that era?

ethan .. bojan is 17 and by no means a finished product .. dont put him into the Torres/Robinho group .. yet

I kind of disgaree with you on Ade.. he has contributed a lot this season .. you might argue as you did that AFC should always have a quality striker .. thats true, but they dont grow on trees unfortunately
they need to be trained and developed and nurtured .. as was the case with Torres/Robinho
he is not perfect..nobody pretends him to be so .. but fundamentally our good start of the season was due to Cesc and even Hleb and Flam scoring a few goals .. dont forget the Gallas man either

Ade has done his job .. somebody sometimes needs to take the relay .. and thats where our shortcomings in Hleb and Eboue and even Rosicky appear .. none of them scores any goals .. or playes enough decisisve passes

thats where it hurts most

Ade/RVP are a good enough strike force in any team .. if they are both fit and then bring Theo through..but not Theo and Bendtner at the same time .. in fact, sell Nik as me thinks he is just short of AFC class

as I said yday, bring one decent good young guy through per line .. thats more than enough to coach

and then as you suggest, buy 23/25 years old proven players .. our standing in the world as a club should command that we do so .. imagine a club such as Arsenal that constantly tries to knick players from second/third tier European clubs for no money or very little ..

its not very nice and Platini has a point in attacking AW on it

we can do better than that .. and we would fukk up less players’s careers .. when will these Denilson/Diaby/Bendtner/Traore/Hoyte (who is not a talent btw)/Walcott/Merida etc .. leave??

ole .. we have too many youths in the team at the same time .. these guys dont play enough .. Bojan/Prato/Giovanni and so on are playing in nearly all the games .. so was Cesc .. so was Messi .. think about our youngsters .. how many games do they play?? the odd CC game .. it aint gonna work for them .. thats why you see them regressing .. best examples are Denilson/Traore .. and Diaby is played out of position

think of it through the players eyes .. what kind of season can Denilson look back to come May?? how many games was he involved in?
I saw him coming on against Pompey at the start of the season and he looked great .. and now.. a shadow of what he achieved last year
cant be great for the confidence either ..
Traore is still young, but the Brazilian is 20/21 .. absolutely crucial to play

the only one that saw through this was Diarra .. God bless him

I dont like to be negative but IF we do finish 3rd what is the qualifying position for the Champions league? are there fewer games than for whoever finishes 4th? if not then I say, if we lose to Chelsea then rest players and concentrate fully on winning the CL. if we lose to chelsea that may happen naturally anyway.

BB…I just have to wonder where you guys make this stuff out of.

Most kids playing for top clubs in the world are not playing regularly. They get many more games playing for Arsenal if they are good enough.

You claiming you’re only worried about the future of those kids is ridiculous because Wenger picks players who are good enough. If they’re good enough they’ll play.

The players that left Arsenal instead of waiting are even at this moment not good enough to play for Arsenal.

What’s most dubious about your argument is this: Squad players do not generally get many games. Which is better? To have an 18 year old still learning his craft on the bench or to have a 31 year old World Cup winner.

Which player is harmed more? And which would more benefit?

Ole Gunner:
Why do you get involve, surely by now you must know what to read and what to ignore on this blog?

Excellent post, Yogi — thank you, I needed to read something like that.

I do have issues with Ade but it’s ridiculous to focus on him as the cause of our current problems. I don’t think the real blame rests with the players, it rests with AW. It gives me no pleasure to say that because I’m as vehement and as passionate a supporter of Arsene Wenger as they come. I wish AW would bench Ade and start Bendtner only because Ade looks like he needs a break.

I do think a trophy is still possible but I also think that a loss against Chelsea will be decisive against our title hopes. A draw, I’m not so sure.

shango like you ?

your always good for a riveting read ?
but i like your thought process
DONT GET INVOLVED

ole
And talking about spending: Since when have Arsenal got success by spending big sums for players?

when has arsenal recently won anything ?
since the spending of the top clubs started ?
you should ask yourself !

spending sprees started

well marcus thats a start !
its good to see some of you coming around to common sense !
I dont hate ade either ! as G4E suggests i just know
that it aint working ! its bloody obvious !
its obvious to the neutrals also !

But to blame our midfield is poor judgment .
you can see they are feeding the box with chances !
I think cesc is shooting more recently because he’s given up feeding ade pass after pass after pass ! But it obvious to me that they focus there energy in feeding the big fella !
But it aint happening !
As 4 draws on the trot are telling us !
that lost us this season .
it will take a tremendous effort to dig our way out ! but i do have faith it can happen ! but someone needs to step up !!!

RVp and theo with our limited options is worth a go for me ! Not sure id like to test it out against chevski but it do or die ! I cant fathom how arsene will get out of this spot .

ole enough with the video games , i know your only 18 or 20 , a couch potato with a controller in your hand but i think your subliminal messages are getting very subliminal ! wot are you on about ?
or are you talking about your fantasy league where they only total goals scored that count :) >?

BB

too true
Denilson/Diaby/Bendtner/Traore/Hoyte /Walcott/Merida add to that gibbs randall ,sunu, vela that norway 16 year old and bazerite etc…

not all of them will get a run .. in fact most will become Jeremie ali’s , larrsons , stokes ,
diarra’s and mumvba’s .. these guys need 1st team football and for a few seasons before we can really gauge there development . Im sure they would hit there straps before 23 but most kids wont have the patience to wait here , and we will screw there careers up in the process !
cesc is a lucky lad to have all the 1st team air time ! It really makes you wonder how arsene thinks sometimes , he looks like a kleptomaniac who hasn’t thought it through

ethan: I’m a gooner for 30 years, and we’ve had our fair bit of success. But we’ve never based that on splashing cash like crazy.

Don’t get me wrong, Arsenal has spent a lot of money over the years, but we’ve never just gone and bought any player or a series of player with price being no objection. It’s never

ole .. you tell me what club tries to bring through 11 young players at the same time and tries to compete for their respective league and the CL??

you better look outside your little box

also please explain .. AW buys players that are good enough ie they should then play and then you write if they are good enough, they will play
so he obviously doesnt know whether they are good enough when he buys them .. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nobody knows how a 16 to 19 years old will turn out to be .. and surely you wont find out by not playing them

lets get real here .. we have overhyped our youth system .. we are trying to poach promising youngsters .. without guarantees .. thats the true story .. even in days past, AW managed to splash money on Sol .. albeit on a free but with a big salary tag .. what happened since??

BB and Ethan - You seem to be getting cause and effect mixed up. Cesc is not a great player because he got a run in the team. He got a run in the team because he’s a great player.

***Ade & the Offside***

To prove that a lot of fans taking this issue one sided and being unfair.

The striker can be caught offside, because the ball was not played fast enough when he was not in an offside position.

TH14 in his last few seasons, used to get so freaked out at Cesc and others because they didn’t release the ball faster before he’s in an offside position.

If you want to bring an issue, bring it from both sides, not just one sided.

ole
…… But we’ve never based that on splashing cash like crazy.

i know what you mean but when chevskis new owner came to pass , the goal posts changed !
you have sir alex stating this is the best squad he’s ever had .. and no one doubts chelsea has the players to win any title .. and still do well on all fronts , the champions league as late has become such a head hunted prize to all clubs who deem they can chase it .. You need to add depth to chase multiple
cups and titles , and lets face it,we have state of the art grounds and training facilities , we really need to act like the elite club we claim we are !

No more years of promise , if youve been a fan for so long youll remember a wenger statement
saying WE ARE NOT IN A TRANSITIONAL PERIOD

what do you think now ?
or have you just got used to loosing ?

Jer .. dont be ridiculous .. as a youngster, u need to play
basta .. we cant accomodate 2 youth teams at the same time
end of story

I know that the big mantra at our club is to develop young talent and that we are selling us to the entire world as this perfectly respectable club that does things the right ethical way, but I think that our standing should command us to buy 23/25 years old established players and try to bring on 2/3 good youngsters at the same time by giving them playing time

ole .. cont..

also not to mention west ham - pompy - everton - manC’s (even spurs next year ) have upgraded there
personnel in such a short space of time , just in order for them to avoid relegation . managers flying out the door as fast as they come in ! the games a changing.

its like a chess game you need to be 3 steps ahead or youll just keep loosing !

Also Agree with Chris Goona, The fans wanted to replace their hero TH14 with someone else so quickly and they sing Ade’s name now more than they sing for Arsenal. It may have gone to his head…he’s only 24. Fans should sing when he scores or when he needs to be pushed on….but not every minute of the game.

jer
i think your getting opportunism arising mixed up with talent.

We let go of patrick and arsene replaced him with the best young central midfield player we had in our ranks… he didnt set the world of fire when he first played ! cant you remember ?.. muscled off the ball, rather like walcott small flashes of brilliance with large periods of shocking play..
He took alot of time to mature to the player he is today .. thats why he comes out every six months and kisses wengers butttt. thanking him for the opportunity . a self admission of what bb’s on about ..

look at when cashley left , clichy was waiting ..
if clichy leaves .. traore’s next ..

if we played walcott since he joined the club where do you think he would be now ??

a regular !

G4E
chris who ?
wot are you on about .. ?
ok so you have chris someone and you getting rocks thrown at you currently ? . ok G4E cya …
I dont think they have had anything to sing about for along time… mate !

all i here is THEO THEO THEO !
stop it with ade already , he is playing badly and you just look foolish !

I don’t have to tell you who looks foolish Ethan, you just need to actually read the posts from now to three months back…Foolish is largly associated with you.

G4E
i am not going to be drawn into a spat fight with you
ade as i predicted cant run the front line and hasnt scored in at least the 4 games we drew , he needed to score a bag of goals for us and he hasnt .He has problably lost us the title this year and it isnt his fault , its wengers for persisting with him . maybe next season if he learns to pass off , stay on side and convert more of his chances all well and good , but currently he isnt in form and wenger keeps playing him . Im only conserned about this season and i did state we needed a striker at christmas ! If he did what i was asking maybe we would still be in the race .. but he didnt !
so stop giving me shite and start giving me credit.
its that simple …

sure G4E what ever you think , all you need to do is read the posts today where 90% of the people agree with me !

and if you read from now to 3 months back you wouldnt find a single post with me on it ! ive only started reposting in the last 48 hours …

what i predicted i did over 4 months ago when he was scoring goals .. shabby UNarsenal like goals !
with a huge percentage of really bad raw play in between ! i stopped banging my head up against a brick wall with you and co. about 2 weeks before the transfer window shut .. so look back between now and the last 3 months ..

go for it mate ..

That’s prbably because all the sane people are gone. Thanks to you

Sorry for every one else posted today, I know some of you have valid points and actually care about the club.

I’m leaving too, you can have the blog to yourself Ethan.

hoorrah !

yawn

ethan - it doesn’t mean you’ve won the argument, it’s just sane people also have lives to get on with rather than wasting their time reading and responding to your cr*p. I also concur with the earlier poster - go write your own blog, oh wait, you already tried that and no one was interested.

bb,it`s basil boli and not his brother roger who won the cl for marseille against ac milan.

cant we all just get along … just think what would happen if the players were as divided as us … the press dont give us a chance… other clubs think we have met are water loo .. but all that is nothing if we dont believe in our selves ..we need to be united .. and give our players .. all of them the support they need .. yeah i know that each and everyone has an opinion about the way Arsenal should be run.. yeah opinion is diff from support and right now support is what the team needs … Come On Gunners .. WE CAN STILL WIN THIS THING

Never mind the quality feel the ethan

hi, my name is dumb a&& ethan. i talk from my a&& all the time. i will dominate the world of football sh^t one day with my big dumb a&&.
my a&& thinks sh^t talks sh^t and sees sh^t.
and i say ade is sh^t bcz im full of sh^t
what else can i say but sh^t?????

it’s the end of the world as you know it. and my sh^t will take over & out…..hahahahahaha

wicked blog 4 the day!

Lifted my spirits and presented a realistic assessment of our over achievements this season and long may it continue, but so what! we are wicked come on arsenal!

nice article.
i think the pertinent question is: if we don’t win any silverware this year, is a four year barren run acceptable for a club like Arsenal?

There’s no doubting Wenger’s genius in spotting players, in developing the club, in playing the beautiful game. But for all that, if there is no silverware on a prolonged basis, perhaps something has to give (eg Wenger partially sacrificing his preference for home-grown/nurtured players in order to make several big money signings. Granted, big money signings are no guarantee of success, but they might make the difference especially at crucial stages in the season).

Yet, I’m not even totally convinced by my own theory. If football is entertainment, Arsenal are pre-eminent. And watching superior football, in superb surroundings without being whorred out to a Russian/American/etc is a pleasure in itself.

[...] Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word But Belief Beats That A common failing of this Arsenal squad, and the ones of the preceding two seasons, according to those whose opinion’s […] [...]

more like all the sane people can write now without fear of being condemned by you HEAD IN THE CLOUDS and your theories ! The tripe and belief you all still have whilst turning a blind eye to obvious problems is more damaging than having the b#lls to step up to the plate and admit they are happening and voice the disapproval loud enough that arsenal and more importantly Arsene does something about it … It worked for liverpool , everyone shouted about the rotation policy and it worked !

I think you just cant get over how right i was and how long ago i said it ! get over it !
Because from all the cr*p i received did you think
i wouldnt come back and give you all a serve when finally common sense prevailed !

We have the ability to be so much better , but most people would rather just blow it off and wait now for next season !
I still think we can win this !
But we need to expose the problems and hope someone steps up !!!

and pas if you think G4E is sane you need help !

paul

i think the pertinent question is: if we don’t win any silverware this year, is a four year barren run acceptable for a club like Arsenal?

NO, it was so important to win something thats why i asked the crew here to get behind winning the C.C
but they all said NO its not a priority ! let the youth continue ! stupid idea ..abuse abuse … yet people like pas thinks im insane !

it would have administered a glimmer of belief to the lads , but no ! everyone would rather win nothing here and applaud our coming of age ?!!?

not sure what we achieved ? we are still in the top 4 , we have still won nothing ,we still cant hold onto top spot ,we still cannot kill teams off … we give the c.c to spurs at a time when chevski was beatable ..
yes im the insane one , and all of you know just so much ! your frightening !!!!
a certain minority HERE are exonerated…

Ethan ….blah…..blah!If you have got nothing intelligent to contribute to this blog then why bother feeding us ur daily “pearls of wisdom”!What exactly is ur point! You have to make 20 posts every day to say what?

Where are you getting ur stats from? If you want to be grown up about this then send us a link so we can all see them.

Where we tonight shall camp?….The top blogs of the day. the newest report , see and reply me some comments. Thanks.

You’re right Ethan. I don’t know that much about football as an American.

However I find your invective a little trying. Why not write a well-thought through post to refute Yogi? I’d love to get another take on it. Sadly the way you communicate, fairly nastily, means that most of us just regard what you write. If you aren’t going to take to the time to be polite, clear and organised then it’s just another opinion…. about as useful as the so-called “zanac’s kids on with their hippy psychedelic kaleidoscope vivbs , stating peace man we are doing better dude this year chill man!

(Spelling corrections all mine.)

ethan: you’re not a real fan.

That’s just cheeky Ole!
