David Bentley - A Brain Barely Alive; Flamini And More Injuries

I did think long and hard about calling today’s post, ‘Idiots in abundance’. I was not referring to the brief intervention by some trolls last night but more to the fact that in reality, your average English footballer should obey the old adage about children; they should be seen and not heard.

Take David Bentley for example, and a few people I have encountered have suggested taking him somewhere with a baseball bat. Personally, I think that is a bit extreme and should not be condoned, especially as every time he opens his mouth, he simply puts a different foot in it and gives the distinct impression that any intellect he possesses is in severe danger of dying of boredom.

Were I one of Bentley’s advisors, my first question would be, ‘What the hell were you thinking when you said that about Walcott’ and the second would be, ‘Please, for the love of God, never speak to the press again’ on the grounds that he is making himself into a cartoon caricature of the stereotypical English footballer. Mentally challenged would be a polite description.

Bentley’s career may be resurgent in recent months and he has had lows as well as highs to gain experience. Sadly for him, the lows are largely self-inflicted. Walking away from an international tournament at any time is not a bright idea but to do so when it is too late to call up replacements is fundamentally stupid and disrespectful to the other squad members.

However, one has to question the value of his wisdom. He and Lassana Diarra are cut from the same cloth; neither has the stomach for the battle to gain a regular first team place at a big club nor the patience to wait for their chance.

Theo Walcott meanwhile has shown considerably more patience and already been rewarded by more pitch minutes for Arsenal than Bentley achieved in his time at the club. He also has considerably more dignity that Bentley in his media interviews. And he has more chance of making it Arsenal than Bentley ever did.

I have but one question for the Blackburn player to answer. At four years younger than Bentley currently is, Cesc Fabregas has made nearly two hundred first team appearances with as many players in his way to the first team; so why did Bentley take until two years ago to register fifty for three clubs? A conundrum that not even Carol could solve…

Onto much nicer things; Happy Birthday, Mathieu Flamini. So would one be correct in assuming that a welcome present would be a phone call from your Agent that says agreement with the club over a new contract has been reached? As Jean-Luc Picard was wont to say, ‘Make it so’.

Flamini typifies the desire that Arsene has built the squad upon,

Milan was a great game and I have more and more confidence now. But what is important for a player is to play and I am playing and game after game I am becoming more and more confident. I want to take more responsibility

All I will say is that if his form is that of a player who is not filled with self-belief, then he is a young man who could turn out to be very special indeed. And at a minimum, a damn sight more media-savvy than David Bentley.

Eduardo meanwhile has found himself to be the centre of some substantially scurrilous rumours, to the extent that Arsene has had to drag himself away from directing his eloquent barbs at Bentley to refute claims being made. The depths to which the media plummet have now gone through the Earth’s core and simply put, enough is enough. Eduardo’s comments about the length of his recuperation are being misinterpreted so badly that wars have been started over more accurate translations. Nowhere in any interview that I have seen has he said he fears being out for fifteen months, only that others opinions are range from nine to fifteen months.

The reaction to the injury is telling; Arjen Robben might only be out for a month or so but the tackle made on him has been condemned throughout Spain with no sympathy for Quique Alvarez ,the perpetrator. Contrast that with the reaction to Taylor…

Ahead of the Wigan game, it seems that the treatment room is more crowded. Arsene noted that Abou Diaby has a calf strain following on from the Milan game, Theo Walcott amongst others played in a practice match – why??? – alongside RvP and now has a thigh problem and will not feature at the weekend. Kolo Toure and Alex Song seem closer to returns and surprisingly, Tomas Rosicky seems to be on course for a return, possibly next weekend, but more likely the match after.

‘til Tomorrow.

how come there r no comments today?

cesc’s chica: It is because we are still posting on last blog entry, and this is a new post.

Good post, as usual Yogi.

Bentley continues to remind me of a guy who, after having split up with a long term girlfriend, just can’t stop himself from going on and on and on about her to anyone who cares to listen.

And even the presence of a new girlfriend isn’t sufficient to take Bentleys’ mind off of the old one. Perhaps he should ring the PFA and ascertain if they can provide him with some counselling/therapy.

Flamini is clearly growing in stature and influence as the season progresses and the team is benefiting bigtime.

Gilberto has said in recent interviews that he really doesn’t know why he can’t get his place back in the team, and has effectively been scratching his head in puzzlement.

But this is clearly a case - as mirrored in the play “42nd Street” - where Gilbertos’ onetime understudy, having been given a chance to play in his role (during Gilberto’s absence at the Copa America) has now made it his own and become a star in his own right. Such is life.

Our injury record this season is something else.
I clearly remember Arsene saying, at the beginning of Rosicky’s latest injury, that it was a question of days not weeks before he’d return - and that was a number of weeks ago now.

And at the rate that Diaby is picking up injuries - irrespective of whether he is played in his correct position or not - there must be a question mark over the extent to which he’s going to fulfill his potential during his football career.

If there will be a Hall of Shame built, there are a few names I would suggest. Ashley Cole, David Bentley amongst them.

By the way Yogi’s Warrior. Pls share the origin of “A cultured left foot.”

Is it Liam Brady?

It must be Chippy

Diaby injured again, rosisky always injured i think they are dead wood and need to be replaced with players who don’t break so easily, any way Bently is a twat and is obviously spitefull at the fact he never made it at as a Gunner

Bentley sorry Yw his correct name is Boof head. Let him harp on all he likes it only sells papers which are best used for wiping one’s arse with. (Used to have to do that before us lower classes had toilet paper, great reading in the Loo).

JD glad your not the manager, why dont we just shoot them, if their injured knock them off. Sorry but a very silly idea. If they are injured they are injured, leave it to the Boss he really knows what he is doing.

Its a worry about Wigan but I’m sure the boss will select the best side possible and we do have an extra day for those injured to get better, here’s hoping.

gr88 article by a gr88 writer.

btw bentley really really suxxx… I felt it was rite to play theo in the practice match..which wud have given him gud confidence ahead of upcoming matches…. but these players rosicky, theo , diaby, persie…need to learn something from ade, flamini, fabregas, sagna, clichy…staying out of the injury lane is also significant…how can the boss play anyone thinking he mite get injured..its the players’ responsibility to stay away from such niggles….damn its infuriating.

Yes Yogi, please share with us how did you come up with the name ‘A Cultured left foot’ ?

LOL Old Timer, yeah some fans have the mentality of “Kill them all”. A minor injury happens to any player, it is frustrating in the case of Diaby, and long injury happens in the case of RVP, Rosicky….I said before it may be a blessing in disguise because it allows more players to step up and prove if they are worthy to play and contribute to the team overall success. I’m sure Denilson is anxious to get in on the act and have a piece of the pie….Did you see the look on his face during the Milan game? He had a sad look, I’m sure he would’ve loved to play against his country men…Kaka & Pato.

If you read C*ntley’s report, he said “Yourself” referring to him about 5 times, which means it’s all about him, his fat ego and making himself some money…..so much for caring about the club you play for……Proves Yogi’s point, there is not much difference between ‘himself” and Diarra.

Isn’t weird the English players that leave us always rhyme with Cashley, C*untley??!

G4E

Another question for the desperately self-rationalizing Mr Bentley:
Just which of the two of you was it who played in the Champion’s League against AC Milan in the San Siro on this last Tuesday?

Another question for the desperately self-rationalizing little Mr Bentley:
Just which of the two of you was it who found himself playing in the Champions League this last Tuesday, against AC Milan in the San Siro?
Of course, for you, this probably wouldn’t match the fun of the all the banter in the Blackburn showers.

(sorry, the site told me that the first message didn’t go through)

Not only played hkm, but provided an inch perfect Brazilian ground cross for Ade to score.

He was also the one providing the cross for Ade to hit the woodwork in the Milan game first leg.

Where was Bentley then? Watching jealously with a cheap beer in hand in a bar with his mediocre teammates somewhere up north?

Please forgive David Bentley, he has not taste champion league games, he had not enough chances to warm Arsenal’s bench, he needs to speak regularly to remind others that he is stil around, he needs to inform the world that he has join Blackburn, a club that teach you how to kick your oponent. Birmingham benfit from that after buying 1 of their so call, gentle, soft giant, out to break your ankle if you are too fast.

David Bentley, I hope you enjoy your football more in the mid table, forever playing for nothing than to make up the numbers in the premier league.

People are out to speak against Arsenal these days, and I am ready out to offend every single F***** that do that.

anybody catching up on Blatter??

Lifetime bans and criminal prosecution for players who make dangerous challenges from the front and the side

quote”Dangerous tackling is one of the most important issues in football at the moment..Players who do this kind of thing intentionnally should be banned from the game”

Can we now name and shame all the English journalists and smash their heads in .. ??

I would really think the fair rule to have, is if you injure a player like in Eduardo’s case, you should be banned until the injured player returns. This will make stupid giants with tiny minds like Taylor and the like to think twice before jumping on others like a huge bull in a china store.

If FIFA doesn’t come up with this rule, talented players will be oust of the game…and the likes of Taylor will rule….and the end result?….an inferior kind of football….Birmingham, Blackburn….and You want fries with that?

and compare this to the reaction in Spain when Robben got injured after a reckless tackle

the entire Spanish football world went on a mission to lynch the tackler and he had to come out and degrade himself to some kind of subservient football dwarf

whilst in England, Martin Taylor is a victim and possibly a hero because he injured an Arsenal player

BB,

fat chence - they(english journalists) will certainly come up with an argument what registers tackle as “intentional”. They are the smartest ass. tut tut..

Actually edlass, what will they argue is if you go by that rule there will very few English players left to play.

Talking to a mate last night who went to the game on Tuesday night:
He sat 3 seats away from Cesc’s grandparents in the away supporters section, who were overwhelmed by the chanting of their grandsons name and smiled and had photos taken with supporters.
Fans sung all match and atmosphere was better than in Madrid.
Virtually no police presents, the Milan fans clapped the Arsenal players and fans as they were leaving the ground before the end and after the end of the game.
They were kept shut in for only 40 minutes after the final whistle (short by European standards) and on leaving the ground every steward clapped the supporters the whole time as they dispersed.

I think that the club and us other fans should be proud of our supporters record and I wish that it was reported in the press rather that the fighting that goes on when ManU fans go away.

Ref the earlier comments about the blog, it is indeed in homage to Liam; and early blog header had a large b&w photo of him scoring at WHL in the 5-0 win.

Yogi, bless you - best arsenal blog, emm, so far ( a la Homer Simpson)

DB is not worthy of further comment as I think it’s been well covered by YW and other posters.

Eduardo is making a good point about his injury. We really do not know when he could be back and worst case scenario could well be 15 months. However, I’m still hoping for the best where that is concerned.

What does worrry me about Eduardo’s eventual return is the attitude of some towards Diaby. He also had a career threatening injury - broken and dislocated ankle and since his return has struggled with a few niggling injuries. To me this is perfectly understandable and therefore not a reason to suggest ditching him from the squad. Is poor Eduardo going to suffer the same callousness when he returns and has to go through a period of adjustment whereby he may not always play at his best or experience injury problems associated with a long lay off from competitive football?

Unfortunately, Rosicky, RVP, and Diably are injury prone thats why its important for the squad to be strengthened next season, especially with 7 players on the bench. I think Song can can play a big part based on his showing in the ANC hes another Essien, and he can cover at CB as well, he will be a good replacement for Gilberto quicker stronger and more agressive. I hope hes back next week

My favourite David Bentley quote of all time, as featured on Football Focus:

“I don’t want to be an under-21 player forever.”

Flamini is another player, like Senderos, who has now developed into an all-round great pro under Wenger. He was another player flattering to deceive a couple of years ago and there were serious doubts he was going to be good enough to make it but he’s proving just how good he is now.

On Bentley, looking at it from an objective point of view, and from his perspective, you could argue he is right. He has clearly benefitted from leaving Arsenal and he has had a great season with Blackburn. It was more a question that his reported lack of professionalism and bad attitude that meant he was never going to have a future under Wenger, not a lack of talent.

I wouldn’t regard Senderos an all round great player… i think he plays with alot of heart but his passing is pretty terrible at times and he seems to have trouble leaping off the ground - which is something all great defenders are capable of - Keown being the perfect example.
He’s improving all the time though and I think he’s a much better defender than people give him credit for, i just don’t think he suits the way we play, he’s uncomfortable with the ball at his feet and his passing game is lousy most of the time. If he was playing for a defensive minded side who knock a long ball out of the defense he’d be dynamite, but the Arse pass through the whole team… That said i love him to bits & i think he makes up his shortfalls through sheer brave determination and grit…

Rev

I think we as fans forms our judgement sometimes pre maturely. We need to trust AW and the coaches to make the right decisions as to who to play on and who to let go. I for one never think that AW is sentimental enough to keep anyone just because he likes him or is biased towards a certain player. But how he makes up his mind is entirely different from you and I. I believe he looks for both character and talent, and then make up him mind as to whether to keep any player in the Arsenal outfit. I do not believe he is sentimental at all, he allowed Viera, Petit and Henry to go despite being very close to all of them. Why ? He does not see them as the future but the past. And very few players when they are allowed to leave the Arsenal fare better than when they were wit the club. He does have a ruthless streak of a winner.
So in Arsene we trust as far as football is concerned.

Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

Just when you thought all the cretins in football were gone, up cropped David Bentley! The guy is a class A idiot and the less said about him the better. It wasnt going to be long till The Suns chief sports writer Steven Howard tried to diminish Arsenals victory in Milan , calling Milan a spent force and not the same team that Man U met last year and predicts Arsenal will fall against English opposition in the next stage of the champions league. !Cue some anoraks stats. And Man u on course for the treble….Blah blah blah. What more can we expcet from the Pro Man U English Media. Fergie, Giggs, Nani, Tevez, Hargreaves,Evra, Van Der Saar,Vidic, Ronaldo arent even English! We seriously need to give Man U a good spanking in the league and CL to shut these morons up once and for all coz theyre air head comments are getting tedious. Thank goodess for the sanity of this blog YW.

Sadly more niggling injuries this week to deal with but then winning this premiership season was never going to be easy with the press and pundits predicting our demise and singing Manure n Chelski’s praises. Thankfully the injuries come 2 weeks before our key clash with Chelski and hopefully we should return to winning ways against Wigan. We are likely to see Gilberto and Denilson start to give Fab and Cesc a rest or coming on after 70 minutes.

we can not afford to rest fab/flam, it is an absolute must win game. The played tuesday and not again till sunday and then not for 6 days. it will be the best players available whoever may still be fit enough to play!!!

not sure why anyone is wasting time even discussing bentley he is not worth the energy.

Yogi….Thanks for sharing, some of us, or at least me, don’t know Brady this much but I just watched an FA cup final from the 1970’s against Man Ure which we won and he was playing…..Too bad one can’t see a full season of those days.

Malaysiangunner, I agree with most of what you said, but I don’t think Wenger doesn’t have a heart. I remember when Cesc scored against Blackburn at Highbury maybe in 2005 or 2006 I don’t remember….and the way he looked and smiled at Fabregas after he scored tells you…he loves this young lad like his own son.

I agree he probably goes by Character, Talent, Stats, then Sentiment comes last. After all he snatches those lads from their home environment and probably feels responsible for their success.

G4E

The Spuds actually offering a hand-watch with “CC winners” on it for 148 pounds…..is the CC itself worth that much?

G4E Spuds will be having an open top bus around london next.

I’m sure they’ll be…after they forget they just lost to PSV and could be out of the Euro Cup.

In fairness to Bentley he did come out a while ago and said that he was not forced out or asked to go, but was given the you can go or stay scenario by Arsene. He also said he was very grateful to Arsene and the club for the way his move was handled and mentioned he had no grudge at all and was pleased to have the opportunity of playing Prem football albeit somewhere else.
I feel this latest quote smacks of a little jealousy as he probably realises had he stayed a little longer he would have probably secured that right midfield spot and would probably be playing CL football now, as he certainly has the ability.
I sense there is a little bitterness now and he probably thinks Theo being in a similar situation should do the same.
Poor misguided boy!

veteran, the fact that he never stops talking about Arsenal at any given opportunity suggests that he has regrets about leaving, but he needs to move on. Theo probably could have gone on loan in January, but he came out at the time and said that he would learn more by training and playing with world class players at Arsenal. I think he is a sensible lad who will be smart enough to take advantage of the opportunities he is being given.

How can he be grateful, and then incite our player to leave the club?
If he was stupid, why ask some to be stupid like you?

I do not question his talent, but his IQ.

****The Village Idiot is back****

(Mourinho) in case you thought of someone else. The Idiot is back with more retarded comments than ever before….Brace your yourself, and buy a helmet to protect your brains from his “Idiotness Virus” carried through his driveling comments.

G4E

Gunner4Ever:
Here is Arsene reply to the “Village Idiot”

“I know people who have won trophies and I don’t rate them at all. I can give you examples of people who have won 100-metre medals in the Olympic Games and they have cheated. I know people in football who have done exactly the same, you look at the history of football.

“What is important for me is to do things in a fair way and in a way that people will enjoy. Of course, a trophy is what you can show but what remains is not only the trophy but the way you play, the way you behave.

“Winning can never be everything,” he went on. “And to destroy people can never be everything. I do not understand those who come out to destroy people. That is not what life is about. Why should you always have to kill other people to exist? If you do that then, somewhere, you feel you are not good enough.

“It’s like you say to me you kick everybody off the park and at the end of the season you win a trophy. To win trophies is important but it is not the only thing in sport.”

I do question about his talent. Surrounded by whole bunch of Blackburn kickers, of course he shines. But if he is still playing at Arsenal, he would have drag the whole team down because of his speed and even skill. He is simply overrated.

Passenal you make good points and yes im sure your right about him regretting leaving. I dont think there are too many who dont as they all end up saying the
best time of their career was at Arsenal.
Its a shame because i would probably prefer Bentley to Eboue in that position but such is life.
Theo is a sensible lad and your right i cant see him making the same mistake.

G4E i sense he knows he should have stayed and feels he doesnt want an englishman to suceed at Arsenal which would prove he made the mistake.
We all assume these guys have some brain cells but clearly players like him and Cashley clearly havnt and get swayed by Agents far too easily.
The curse of the modern game im afraid.

Vet, I agree and with Passenal as well. I just think, if you let your agent pull you by the ear like some sort of mindless cow or something…..Don’t ask others to do the same thing. If anything he should tell Walcott to stick with Arsenal and not make the same mistake as he did, but I guess he will not do that because he is not mature enough, or has the guts to admit his mistake. Good luck to him, and he should mind his own business going forward.
___

Thanks Shango, Wenger smacked the village idiot on the head as usual. I really don’t see anything in Mourinho, he had endless amounts of money, and played defensive crappy football and won a few titles…any average manager can do that with a bit of luck.

Come on guys, idiots like Bentley or Mourinho just aren’t worth our while..

G4E, on Arsene’s “love” and especially for Cesc, I’ve just finished watching this week’s ATVO interview:

Interviewer: “Cesc scored the opening goal, he ran to you. When asked why, he said he wouldn’t be playing in a game like this without Arsene Wenger. How does that make you feel?”

The boss answered in the interview, very gracefully, without even taking the huge credit due to him regarding Cesc’s success story so far.

AW (smiling the whole time, actually throughout the whole interview): “I’m of course very happy, because happiness for a manager, I believe, is that your players are happy. And the joy you could see on Cesc’s face. Because he’s very demanding with himself, so sometimes he’s quickly unhappy with himself. To see him happy, and to see the players happy, is the biggest reward for the manager and for the coaching staff.”

BTW the photo in which Cesc and team embrace le boss is one of my favourite memories of the Milan game. Look at Cesc’s face on that one and you know what I mean.

Not just between the boss and Cesc. Actually look at how Ade jumps onto a beaming Almunia (imagine carrying a big man like Ade!), how Cesc and Hleb hug each other, how the players on the bench i.e. Eboue, Hleb, RvP and Jens look truly ecstatic for and run to congratulate Cesc, how Theo celebrates with Ade after giving him the superb assist, how Clichy and Sagna and Senderos and Gallas can’t stop smiling, and the team huddle at the end. So you’re right, there’s certainly love there. Don’t know if it’s my obvious bias, but I don’t recall seeing anything close to that kind of caramaderie or brotherhood in any other team.

Lou,

I think Fabregas & the team running towards Arsene when we scored was a brilliant way of demonstrating to the English sporting media that despite their continuing hostile campaign against them, Arsenal are as one in purpose, spirit and action, and that they’re going to keep on keeping on.

Lou, Thanks for the report on Arsene’s interview. I have no doubt there is love in Wenger’s heart for his players, but make no mistake about it, this would never interfere with his judgment on who can make it at Arsenal and who will not.

This is why I love this club so much, if you remember the previous team (The Invincibles) TH14, Perez, Etc., used to do the same things. That’s what we teach at Arsenal…the whole package, players are human beings, they have feelings, they’re not merchandise to buy & sell when you like or at your whim.

Some of us don’t understand why Wenger takes a very long time to sign a player, or watching a players before signing them….That’s the reason, he doesn’t want to sign a player to try, if it doesn’t work he sells. It’s a long relationship between all parties Club, Manager, and player.

Yes G4E, your point on taking time to observe a player before signing him has just been testified today by none other than Grimandi, our chief scout of France. He reveals how Arsenal scouts spend years looking at young players, focusing on a few quality ones rather than spreading their net wide - which I thought was the case, given their incredibly wide reach all over the world. How they spend so close attention on select players, and at the same time leave no stones unturned on a really global basis is nothing short of amazing to me. You can see that article on SkySports.com

Thanks Lou.

here is another player saying he didn’t understand why Wenger would come to sign him when he didn’t score for 19 consecutive games at Monaco. Adebayor.

Click my name to read the article.

Yeah just what did they see in Ade that made Arsene sign him despite his terrible goal-scoring record at that time? And how did those qualities that we at last see now (work rate, physical presence, hold-up play, team work, most improved finishing ability, etc etc) get brought out over the past 2 years? Amazing huh!

That’s why I keep saying that there’s bound to be something that Arsene thought was worth his while in players like Senderos or Hoyte or Traore or Theo (obviously when he uncharacteristically paid such a high fee for a boy). It’s just that some guys develop sooner, some later, some fall short of their promises or Arsenal’s demands (in which case Arsene will deal with them too, e.g. Aliadiere, Pennant, Seb Larsson), some want to leave before their talent bears fruit for us (e.g. Bentley, Diarra). That’s the way it is, but by and large, the scouting and training system hasn’t let Arsene/us down at all.

So the moral of the story is: keep our faith!

Exactly Lou…..
it always comes back to “Patience is a Virtue” doesn’t it? :)

Yeah I know sometimes it’s hard to be patient. But for me it’s much easier to just trust the guy with 12 years of track record with Arsenal.

On your point of developing players as all-round men, what I found impressive and endearing (again) about Gael Clichy is how confident but humble, level-headed, eager to improve and mature this young man is:

Without being asked, he reflects on his performance vs Birmingham. “…I’m the first to be sad because it’s kind of my fault. We lost 2 points. But as we say, it’s just a game and we have to refocus. We won against Milan and I’m sure now we can go again to get the 3 points against Wigan and finish the season well.”

Interviewer: “Did you touch that ball? Did you win the ball?”
Gael: “Yes of course. It wasn’t a penalty. But you know, like we say, the ref never comes back on his decision so it’s no point to talk about it. But it’s not the fight on the penalty. It’s more the mistake that I’ve done before. Losing the ball… that hurts me a lot. Of course, (dropping) 2 points is painful. The next 2 days it’s really difficult for me. I was waiting for the Villa game to think about something else. Once again, I’m sorry about that. I hope that one didn’t cause any problem for the rest of the season.”

Interviewer: “How did you cope? The reason they (the 2 mistakes against Man City and Brum) stand out is that they’ve been so so rare.”
Gael: “Well it’s always difficult. And I’m the kind of person who want to progress and be at the top. If you want to be a big player and a top player, you have to avoid those kind of mistakes. That’s why I was so upset with myself. I cost 2 points against Birmingham. I really don’t want that. I’ll really try hard to not make any mistake. But like everyone told me, you know, even big players make mistakes. You’re allowed to make a few. And it’s better to make them now than 3 or 2 games before the end of the season, because now we still got time to get 4 points (ahead of ManU) if we win at Wigan. And Manchester could make some mistakes as well. Let’s go for it. But I’ll remember all of what happened.”

Interviewer: “You won the Premier League before and you were the youngest player with a PL medal ever in 2004. You only played 12 games that season. Would it mean more to win it this year, having been more involved?”
Gael: “Well it’s exactly the same thing when I went to San Siro. When we got there (last time), I wasn’t involved in the game. I was on the bench against Inter Milan. It’s exactly what you say. It’s a different feeling. Of course it’s a pleasure to win the PL and to be the youngest player to win the medal. But it’s something different if we win this season because I’ve been a key player in the team, I’ve been playing all the games. It’s different. I hope I can make it for the second time. This time I would be really proud of this medal.” (He’s our only player who’s played in all league games this season.)

When asked when he’d score his first goal for the team, he said “I’m sure it’ll come before the end of the season.” Similar to the bet between Cesc, Hleb, Rosicky and Flamini, Gael also revealed he had a bet with Johan Djourou who hasn’t scored his first Arsenal goal either; didn’t include Bacary Sagna because he had just joined the club at that time. When asked if he’d invite Sagna, who’s also never scored a goal having played 100+ senior games, Gael said yes, if he’s open to the challenge. He also said he’s been working on his crosses for 2 years now, hence those assists and good balls into the box we’ve seen recently.

He also revealed that he played as a striker and in midfield when he’s 15. “I used to score quite a few goals… But it’s been 5 years now (that he’s played in LB I guess). I can’t wait for my first goal!” Good luck to him!

Sorry for the long post. I love him as a player and a person and just wanted to share with you guys.

Thanks Lou, that was quite enjoyable. I love Clichy too and always always preferred him to Ashley.

In life you can’t get along mindset-wise with everyone. I actually have no real problem with Bentley’s utterance. It’s clear he’s pained not to still be with us. It’s not easy to verbalize how disappointed he is with himself hence the defensive antagonism. He’ll grow & learn.

A 1-0 @ Wigan should do. Hope we don’t draw Man U or Chelsea. Would much prefer Roma, Fenerbache or Schalke.

Keep up the great work Yogi…AW’s Arsenal forever

You must have been up all night researching that one Lou! Good stuff all round G4E too. It is the stuff that makes us love Arsenal. And it makes u realise the work that Arsene and his team put into finding these uncut diamonds who nobodoy ever knows anything about and raises eyebrows about. Amazing!

As for Mourinho ..empty vessels make the most noise. ….David Bently ….sour grapes! And to European domination onwards and upwards we go.

Have a little faith Aman I think to call yourself European contenders you have to be prepared to beat the best. Our victory against Milan gave us belief in the same way it did agianst Madrid 2 years ago but more importantly showed that in this cup we definitely mean business. I expect there will be a few potential banana skins along the way, but I wouldnt be fooled by our 4-O loss to the hatchet men of Man U in the FA Cup. The media would have us beleive that Arsenal wont cope if you rough them up but i think weve shown that we wont be bullied anymore. Furthernore weve only lost once to the big 4 in 2 years at Liverpool in a game where we had nothing left to play for after beating them twice that year. Believe me Chelsea. Liverpool and Man U wont want to draw us either over two legs If RVP comes back we can only get better.

Agree Gooner4Life, we should not back out or fear an English team in the CL. As Yogi mentioned in his articles, the CL is a different ball game, it’s not an English competition where being brutal with your opponents is viewed as better than being clever with the ball.

For example: Pirlo’s foul on Walcott after our first goal earned him a yellow card. If this foul was in an English game, the referee might thank the guilty player for being such a man. It’s ridiculous.

If we play with the same commitment, and maturity as we played against Milan, any team will be scared to play us.

On to Wigan, it is going to be a difficult game just because the media hype again..it almost feels like Arsenal is going to war every game. Also the pitch may have a big factor in the result, but again if we play committed to get a good result, we will.

C’mon you Gunners.

I can’t believe people think Senderos is playing well, let alone approaching Captain material– my only take on this game (other than people are making too much of a win based on one speculative shot finding the corner of the net against a second-choice goaltender) is that Wenger has got to finally spend some of his money on defense– we can’t have a team where one injury to Toure means we have to depend on someone who simply isn’t good enough, like Senderos. It’s bad enough that we are playing Diaby at wing, where he is totally lost, and virtually useless– can’t Wenger see how well spent the investment in Sagna was last year? Imagine if Wenger would only spend half the money that Ferguson has spent on central defenders, to get a really good, young, quick center fullback– Toure would be relegated to third choice, Djourou (if he ever plays again) would be fourth choice (he’s got far more potential than Senderos), and we could sell Senderos for whatever we could get for him.

Didn’t anyone notice that it was Senderos’ cockup that should have cost us the Milan game– the errant header to Inzaghi was only the appetizer– it was Senderos failure to track Pato on the play where Pato stupidly tried to lob the keeper from close range (and should have scored instead), that should have cost us the game. On that play, Clichy was tracking one of the other Milan players back into the box, when Pato cut diagonally behind the Milan player that Clichy was defending to head for the right side of the goal (our left defensive side), and Senderos was trailing him… instead of staying with him, Senderos motioned to Clichy (who was busy defending the other Milan player, and didn’t see Senderos’ hand motion) to go out on Pato, leaving Senderos in the middle; instead, we ended up with Clichy defending the other Milan player, and Senderos defending no one, while Pato was left wide open on our left, to receive the pass for what should have been the go-ahead goal– but what should have happened is that Senderos stayed with Pato, while Clichy stayed with his man– you don’t switch defenders off of opponents in the box, in the middle of a developing play… Senderos screwed up (again) and we’re lucky we didn’t pay with a goal (which I’m willing to bet would have meant a loss).

Senderos has no ball skills (I thought Wenger valued technique in players above all else), no pace (I thought Wenger valued pace second most after technique), he doesn’t pass well, and he has no self-assurance, confidence on the ball, or even the simple ability to settle the ball, and pass it out rationally, when under any kind of pressure at the back. Somehow Senderos managed to score an own goal for Aston Villa when it was harder to put it in the net than it was to kick it out of bounds (somehow placing the ball in the only place our goalie couldn’t/wouldn’t get it), and then he manages to screw up the single best scoring opportunity of the Milan game by kicking the ball back across the goal mouth straight into the goalie’s hands, when it would have been easier to just bump the ball into the gaping, wide-open end of the goal nearest him– how does he manage to get it exactly wrong both times?
