After Milan, Reality Bites

What can one say about this week that has not been said a million times over? Let’s face it; the past days have been made better by victory in a scintillating football match that was a credit to both sides and to the game in football in general, in an era when the more tawdry aspects of it are the headline makers.

What is interesting is the psyche of the national newspapers who for so long have railed against the diminishing number of natives in the Arsenal team, now embrace the squad as record-breakers, proving everything that is good in the English game. Um, well Arsenal are sort of unique in the English game with only Manchester United on the same level of playing football as it should be played. Chelsea and Liverpool are solid teams who can do it in patches but it is not their overriding philosophy as it is at The Emirates and Old Trafford. Nothing like selling a few extra copies to put the flip-flopping of your average politician to shame, eh lads?

Much has been said about achievements. I am not sure I like the use of the word in the context of one game; to be the first English club to win against AC Milan in their ‘own backyard’ is an achievement of sorts but without being in a successful season, does it mean anything more than progression to the next round? That is not mean to sound as if the win is being diminished because it is not, more a contextual issue surrounding the victory. The hype has been rising to such an extent that it concerns me that some may start to think this squad is now a shoe-in for the Champions League when there are still some very good teams involved.

The plaudits for the victory have been spread around the team, mainly in the direction of Fabregas or Cesc as his team-mates refer to him as, but others are getting praise. Philippe Senderos gets a rare piece of praise from Tony Cascarino,

It was such a great team effort that you couldn’t pick anyone out, but Philippe Senderos was a man mountain. Kaká is tremendous but he wasn’t given any time or space to cause any damage. Of all Wenger’s players, Senderos has more captain and leadership qualities than any. He makes the odd error but as a leader you cannot fault him and that is why Wenger thinks a lot of him. He was the one dictating things at the back. It is easy to criticise those who make the odd poor decision, but he’s more of a captain than William Gallas.

For a player who gets more brickbats than most I hope that he has boosted his own confidence enough to last him through to the end of the season because as Kolo Toure returns to fitness, the opportunities for Senderos will diminish. It must be quite difficult for the lad to know that no matter how well he plays, he will drop out of the team to the bench as soon as the first choice returns to fitness. The progress he has made in 2008 in confidence though is promising for the future. I know that some, perhaps many, do not think he will make it but it is the age old problem at Arsenal now; age. Everyone develops at a different pace but because of Cesc’s early progress, there seems to be a tendency to judge everyone by that standard and if they, in someone’s opinion, have not cut the mustard by the age of majority, it is a case of shipping them out which ought not necessarily be so, when patience might lead to late development and a realisation of the potential that was seen in the first place.

Mathieu Flamini in between being interpreted as telling Juventus to take a running jump, puts the win into perspective,

Of course to come here and beat the Champions League holders [is a boost]. It was a great team performance. The spirit was fantastic especially in difficult moments. It made a difference. Everyone did a great job. We were all working for each other…Now we are just going to enjoy this victory

Whilst Arsene concurred,

It was a perfectly executed performance, a display we wanted. We played with organisation, never dropped off, closed them down and didn’t give them any time. We played with authority, maturity and talent. I’m very proud of the team. To come here and beat a side like Milan deserves a lot of credit

Having been on the receiving end of a masterclass, the Milanese gave the rest of the world an object lesson in graciousness in defeat with everyone from the vice president to their star player acknowledging that the better team over the tie won. It might not always be the case but when you suffer a constant stream of turgid abuse from opposing managers and players, such comments stand out in the memory.

But the last word on the night perhaps goes to Emmanuel Adebayor,

Beating this Milan team means we can beat every single team in the world

Well, shall we start with Wigan on Sunday then?

‘til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Just watched the game again and Diaby was better than many people have been saying. He tired in the 2nd half but has been out injured so not up to speed yet. On to Wigan and the rugby pitch. Lets hope the lads keep focused and win.

  2. Howard, (I copied here just in case you didn’t get my reply to your last post)

Our first choice players are known to everyone. A 7 years old can pick the team if all are fit to play. That doesn’t mean in any way that Senderos, Djourou, Diaby, or Eboue are bad players at all. I have absolutely no problem seeing Kolo playing with Senderos and Gallas resting. You seem to forget this is Senderos that played great in CB in 2006 leading up to the CL final.

Don’t kid yourself mate, I would be surprised if Wenger signs any Cbacks this summer, if not any at all.

We have players the Boss believes in, you just don’t. Fair enough, I will go with the boss…call it brown nosing, call it what you may…he is the boss, and I like what he is doing for the club.

Look at what Fabregas is saying and I qoute
“Scoring that goal was one of the best moments of my career and I ran straight to the boss because without him I would never have had the chance to play in games like this.”

Something no one seems to understand in amaterialestic world, built on $$$ signs, diamond and gold….this is a sport with a business side, not a business for sports

  3. I think Senderos is a much better defender than people give him credit for, his problem is that he plays for Arsenal… he’d be dynamite playing for a more defensive minded team, but Arsenal require great skill & good passers of the ball throughout the entire the team, unfortunately Senderos can’t pass a ball for toffee, but he makes up this with sheer determination & grit, he plays with alot of heart and i think Wenger sees this and picks him for it…
i also vaguelly recall hearing that Senderos & Fabregas are best mates – i often wonder whether that has any bearing on him such a strong feature in the team… those bonds are important to 19 / 20 year olds, especially when moving to a different country… just a thought, mind…

  4. Good post as usual but I dont think anybody except the press is getting carried away with this victory which is no doubt historic and which I will enjoy till the end of the season. If you believed that then you would believe england could win the world cup and beat Croatia with the so called golden genration…and look what happened there! Cesc speaking for the team rightly says winning this game is just another step.It gives us the belief that with similar performances we can make it all the way in this competion as it did in beating Real at the Bernabeu and the impetus to finish the rest of the season on a high after all the hard work we have put into it. It was a grand gesture of respect from the AC Milan fans n players to applaud the Arsenal fans and a victory for beautiful football. The only teams bigging themsleves up blatanly are Chelsea n Man U which is not surprising is it.But at Arsenal we will let our football do the talking.

Back to the reality of the Premiership and as one blogger mentioned onto the “wigan rugby pitch” which will be sufficiently wrecked to eliminate our passing game. But we can take some encourgement from the return to form of Theo and Diaby and the return of RVP and shortly Rosicky and Song to give the other players a well earned rest. Onwards and upwards hey.

  5. Another very interesting post YW.

‘Much has been said about achievements’ -

it is true we have not won anything yet & indeed may not win anything this season. What this result & more importantly the standard of performance has proved is we have a group of players that have the ability to play at the highest level against even the highest quality opposition.

The doubters can even note that it was done without 4 of our best players.

What the team has to do is treat every game with the same intensity.

Arsene made a comment last week that nobody seemed to pick up but I think is absolutely key to our ability to winning things.

    He said:
‘it is good that we play Aston Villa because they are a good team & we have to concentrate’

    or words to that effect.

Now to me that smacks of not giving sufficient respect to lower teams.

We have seen them lose concentration against Sunderland & Brum (home game) & a few more. It seems dangerous if we take an early lead because complacency has sometimes crept in.

They have to be in the mindset that they are playing against the best to get the best out of themselves. They maybe have to have a little bit more fear.

Senderos was superb in Milan. He is a big match player & most definitely a confidence player. He gets better when he has a run of games.

Whilst he is in good form & confidence we may have an opportunity to add strength & power to the RM . That is Kolo in the position he started in.

  6. Superb ‘piece’ as usual Yogi, i do get annoyed at these so called experts view on things they know nothing about.
How does Tony Cascarino know that Big Phil is more of a captain than William Gallas. Is he at London Colney every day or is he ever in the dressing room before a match.
He gives this moronic view after seeing the player’s unusual behaviour in just one game and decides just because its not the normal english get on with it attitude that he is not fit to be the skipper.
What Cascarino fails to realise is Arsenal have done very well under William and i know from players quotes that he is very well respected with the others and that his one to one motivation is his forte’.
But i should not be surprised, as any action by any Arsenal player that is not up to standard in their eyes is jumped on by these idiots and multiplied to the extreme.

  7. Gunner4Ever

I read your post, right no problem.
I don’t have any problem with Senderos except that his mistakes don’t seem to be going away as he develops. He’s has improved no doubt about that but Senderos hasn’t improved throwing away his points/cup losing mistakes. The mistakes are still with him and keeps on coming up in almost every game.

In that case he’s still far away from being the substantive CB, looking beyond Gallas time at the club.

Saw the heading he gave to Kaka in the first halfof the Milan game which we were lucky to escape?

Can he sustain being on the bench waiting to come on if there’s an injury to Toure or Gallas?

Can he play consistently without the mistakes which comes up often in his game?

Can he improve on his pace to make him suit Arsenal’s attacking play.

If the answers to these questions are positive then I can see him making a future at the club; other than that I don’t see him beyond two more years at the club.

  8. Tony Cascarino – the very much a Chelsea fan reporter and also one time ‘Legend’…

Thinks a player who gets caught in the headlights every time he plays against Drogba should be Captain ahead of the guy that left Chelsea when no-one wanted him to go in acrimonious circumstances…

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm….

  9. Agree 110% with what you said about the Milan reaction after the game. Have seen it reported that there was even a standing ovation at the end. Whether (as reported) that was for our team, or even if it was for their team facing the end of an era, I can’t say enough about how classy Milan are, even in defeat.
They even re-layed the pitch beforehand.
    Total respect.

  10. On Senderos;

You cannot have back up CB as good as first choice. Yet Senderos and Djourou are good young back ups who should in future when gallas retires or is sold off, should be in position to take over.

    On quarter final draw:

I think we could draw against Barcelona…hopefully we cud do to henry what we did to viera…

I dont want us to draw against english team. Its more fun watching us plays against major european giants than english teams.

  11. Howard

Have you seen Gallas making mistakes? he did when he did not protect the channels enough and allowed Agbonlahor( I hope I got the spelling right) to cross and Senderos could not get his leg away in time and scored an own goal. it was more Gallas mistake for the Villa goal than Sendy’s.
Did you see Toure making some mistakes almost every game yes. All defenders makes mistakes ditto for goal keepers. And the nature of the game is that their mistakes will be more telling ie resulting in goals scored against.
I am no fan of Senderos , not yet, but he has improved on his psyche and he no longers dwell on his mistakes and defends well even after making them just like Gallas, Toure, Rio ferdinand, Tony Adams etc. Thsi new found mental fortitude will stand him in good stead. I have more hope for him now than lets say 3 months ago. One thing wqe must realised is AW very seldom keep duds. Most players he has persist with comes out quite good, Ade/Toure/even Wiltord and now Theo and even perhaps Senderos. All I can say is it has not done us much harm so far.

Reality comes hitting us on the head. We need to look forward and the next game is alawys the most important for the rest of the season and until we grab one or even two silver ware our last victory mean somthing but not enough…

I do have faith and we can do it

    Up The Arse !!!

  12. Cascarino’s full piece in the Times gives the game away. He played against Gallas in France tried to “get physical” and was greeted with a “look of withering contempt”.

  13. It looks to me that Senderos has improved his athleticism considerably since he has been playing regularly. he looks quicker over 20 yards than before. that makes a huge difference since pace is his real achilles heel. his positioning and football brain is as good as Tony Adams. he is a proper defender, but yes he is a bit lacking in skill. sometimes I worry about what he’s doing with his feet. against Villa he sliced a chance over the bar, agaisnt Milan there was one straight at the keeper and of course the own goal where he couldn’t get his foot out of the way. more nimble defenders like Toure dont make that kind of error, but may make other errors.
basically I dont have a problem with a fit Senderos in the team but in reality when toure is fit, he comes back into the side every time and rightly so for now.
Wonder if Toure is ready for this weekend?
RVP should be one would think.
as for the draw, there aren’t many team I dont want – other than Man u. I would find going to OT a bit of a bind to be fair. would much rather meet them in the final. you can just see us getting manure cant you?

  14. yeah them or Barcelona, though i dont care who we meet. In fact if it is Manure we will probably be labelled underdogs again, which is what we want.

I like Senderos, I think his passing is fine, along the ground at least. And his pace is not that bad for a defender. He just makes the odd stupid mistake which is infuriating. He’ll always be third choice, but he’s a good third choice

  15. hackajack .. you stole my words .. Cascarino obviously has an issue with good old William .. maybe he couldnt get a ball against him in his days in France..
Yogi should have hinted at the onesideness of Cascarino’s article in the Times .. btw Cascarino is an idiot

  16. Concur Yw Milan were without doubt a very sporting team. Shades of when Arsenal met Manure prior to the Munich disaster. Great football played in the right manner. Swiss Tony very good with the head and people are right all defenders make mistakes, his seem to be getting lesser which makes him a more competent player the more games he gets. As usual the Boss always knows best.
I really worry about the Wigan games, comments now coming from Wigan seem like the comments we got from Birmingham, see the attched
    http://www.wigantoday.net/latics/Gunners-starting-to-crack.
3847143.jp and Kirlands comments. It may all be bravado but Manure have done it to us Sheffield Utd, I just hope the dont come out kicking us up in the air. Its a real l worry .

  17. Senderos is OK when hes not up against speedy players, and then when they get past him he fouls, gives away critical free kicks or is sent off. Our other weakness in the stand in players is Traore who has definetly gone backwards, and when Gallas complains about young players want flash cars I think Traore must be one of those, he gets 15k a week and there are many rumours of his playboy ways. I belive he should be loeaned out anf if we need stand in left back play Gallas there and bring in Song at CB

  18. Gallas actually went up in my estimation following his reaction post Birmingham, for me, actions speak louder than words and his actions seemed quite fitting to the day in question.
Flamini will be the next Arsenal captain.

  19. yeah flamini…if he stays..prolly he will..but Senderos v Toure..anytime even if senderos is at his best and toure at his usual(his usual is his best is his worst…he is that consistent)
..i would pick toure….SOng will be a v gud addition to the bench..i mean like give him last 10 mins in place of flamini in games which we are winning 2-0 or more…the more no. of players that start performing very well, the more the confidence of the whole team…and the less the same of manu…

  20. Rev:
“unfortunately Senderos can’t pass a ball for toffee”

    Jesus, such flipand infactual comments!

  21. Some of the teams in the premiership are amazing, always working in tandem to give the title away to MANU.

Any team that win the title other than MANU does a yoeman’s job ‘cos MANU is the establishment choice; and refrees and offcials are all working to support the success of MANU.

When you go to Old Trafford, they kick the lumps out of you while the refrees look on unconcerned. They also encourage other teams to do the same to you.

Now the trick is to water and destroy the pitch when playing Arsenal. MANU did it in the FA cup, Birmingham did it and Wigan is also following the trick.

Arsene should recruit some English regular players to replace some of our players who’re average to stem the bad press. It will also help business, enabling us to sell more shirts.

English players doing well at Arsenal will sell more shirts and merchanise than foreign players. You won’t believe it but its the truth. That’s the business side of going for English players.

  22. Howard:
Senderos no future! That is your opinion, can you please name a better CB in his age group? With comparable qualities but without the liabilities?
Your opinion on Senderos is frankly bais purely for your dislike of him.

  23. Can’t believe no one has mentioned the Bentley interview with Sky where he tries to undermine Theo’s place on the team.

  24. Howard:

“Arsene should recruit some English regular players to replace some of our players who’re average to stem the bad press. It will also help business, enabling us to sell more shirts.”

And the average players are? and how much do they cost?

I do agree somewhat on your point about ManU. We’ve never been favourite to win anything if ManU are still in it.
Frankly i don’t care.. neither does Wenger.

  25. howard is a biased one-eyed racist
maybe he should print a copy of his BNP card on this blog

  26. Bentley just trying to convince himself he was right to move to blackburn and fight for that last UEFA cup spot

Maybe a jealous seeing Walcott play in a champions league game against AC Milan. Walcott will get his chance as a first team regular soon enough i’m sure, if he’s patient. I hope he doesn’t leave

  27. Exactly. I also saw Gallas’ reaction in good light since he took distance to prevent himself from losing it and grabbing the referee’s whistle or something after giving a no-penalty.

Senderos is a great player. I was impressed with him at San Siro where he was simply imperious in the air and ground and in which Gallas struggled more.

One thing I detest which I find people engaging in when they talk of Senderos: Despite the 8-10 great games and clean sheets he’s contributed to these last 6 weeks, people still slag him. What more does he need to do. People still compare him to Titus Bramble.

I don’t think Wenger needs to buy a CB in the summer unless Gilberto leaves.

  28. Now I hope Arsenal get on the serious business of the title and stop saying we will win this and that.i hope the gunners will learn to be humble after the AC win.As the saying goes pride comes bf a fall.
now the other epl clubs will be gunning for Arsenal. You never know. To disrupt the gunners ground passing game the pitch could be made water logged say 50% will be good enuf. Another ingenius way could be to make pot holes.
I get very alarmed when Arsenal players make
statements abt winning the titile and cl.this will ruffle the feathers of a certain red nosed who has many ex mu players and sympathisers willing to sabotage the gunners.
Anyway I believe the gunners have what it takes to win both if the gunners have no injury problems and suspensions for key players.

  29. Hearing Wigan players run up to this game it occured to me how seriously teams take playing us. They talk it up for days and psyche themselves to be really up for it. If we’re not the strongest team in England why would this be so. Well it’s because we are!

  30. walcott is a sensible bloke, Bentley wasn’t. thats why Bentley made a huge mistake and is now regretting it and trying to make himself feel better by making theo do the same. sad.

  31. gazzap, I was shocked by Bentley’s comments too. It probably shows why the guy might never become an outstanding player. Arsenal is the one team that if you’re good enough, you play, and once you make the step up from not being good enough to being so, you’re in the team. If you cop out at first chance you might move to another team but you would still not be good enough.

  32. I like your conspiracy theory Mohd and looking back at the Old Trafford pitch during the FA Cup it was pretty waterlogged and messy wasnt it! A bit lyk Chelsea tried to do a few years ago against Barcelona but the better team triumphed on the day and at Old trafford the same was true. I still think though that for the games that count even if we get Man U will be a different affair. Man U hold no fear to us as we have beaten them twice and drawn once in the last 3 games against them. They are also a one trick pony with theyre game being based on outrunning teams and unleashing Rooney, Ronaldo,Tevez. But they were all clearly anonymous at the emirates being unable to outrun our efence save for 2 mistakes an ongoal by gallas and theo losing evra, I think Man U will be more worried about this one. The only thing we have to wrry about is the referee not spoiling the game and falling for Man U’s theatrics. bentley is a jealous loser.Does he think he woul have played better against Milan.

  33. I have to admit being one of those people who thought Senderos was never going to be first choice at centre-back for Arsenal but he’s really improved this season and is showing just why Wenger has always talked so highly of him and backed him even when he’d made mistakes in the past. An immense performance from him, and everyone else for that matter, in Milan that has made the rest of Europe sit up and take notice.

  34. You heard the foolish advice by Bentley? ‘Theo should leave Arsenal if he wants to make it big’ How big is Bentley making playing for Blackburn? Playing in the champions league?

My advice to stupid Bentley. Theo is not leaving today or tomorrow; he’s been training with top players and taking his lessons seriously. He’s being given chances and only at 18. He’s better than Bentley at the same age and now I strongly believe that if Theo takes his lessons seriously, he’s already on the verge of breaking into the first XI.

Theo is so important to Arsene and I know he wants to use Theo to prove a point.

Sour grapes; still harbouring pains that he couldn’t make it at Arsenal. Same sour grapes as Aliadiere; who had tons of chances but failed to prove his capabilities.

This attacks on Arsenal by former players make me feel nausea at times.

  35. Walcott Vs Bentley

It’s all about attitude, just see how Walcott talk, reacts, and play. He may be frustrating at times, but he is only 18 and now finally starting to be more effective than ever before. But his attitude, his humbleness, and his sincere desire to do good is the key to his career at Arsenal. I think Walcott’s problem is more confidence than lack of desire and technique. On the other hand, look at Bentley’s cockiness & arrogance which is disgusting and probably the reason Arsene didn’t hesitate to let him go…it’s his loss, he is a nothing player yet, he won no trophies, actually Walcott done better than him for England under 21. That of course until Man Ure buys him for 30 mil and inflate his arrogance even more.

Thanks Howard for giving Senderos two years, in two years time you will be saying you are so glad we didn’t axe him out. Defenders need a lot more time to gain confidence and understanding with their partners. Kolo’s speed always makes his partner look good whether it’s Gallas or Senderos.

    G4E

  36. One of the main reasons I like Senderos is that he’s the type of player who would throw himself in front of a bus if he thought it would stop the opposition scoring. He wears his heart on his sleeve and you can see it really upset him to score that og, poor lad was almost in tears.

He needs to be more consistent, true, but hopefully that will come and I think Gallas will help impart that on him. Speaking of which, I think Gallas has been great this year too and a very good captain too, the others certainly seem to respect and listen to him.

In fact our first choice back 4/5 is pretty awesome. Would be interested to see some stats on goals conceeded with them all playing

  37. Oh shit, just saw that Theo and Diaby are out for Wigan, injured in a game on Thur and at Milan respectively. The boss said RvP played in that behind-closed-doors game too, came through unscathed, but is not certain to play vs Wigan. Song’s still a doubt. Kolo may or may not be back. Tomas is still 10-12 days away.

Bentley – isn’t even worth discussing for me. Sour grapes. But I’d give him one point he said “If you’re at 24 and have like 30 games under your belt, you have to go somewhere else.” Fair play to him. But look, Theo’s had 15+13=28 games so far this season. So why leave when you’re developing under the best coach there is, training with world-class players, playing in Europe? Out of those Theo appearances, 3+4=7 were in CL. That’s Bentley’s jealousy speaking.

Senderos – we only lost once when he has been standing in for Kolo (correct me if that’s wrong, I read it somewhere). And you don’t have to look beyond the 2 legs vs Milan. Kaka and Pato quiet over 180 mins, Inzaghi/Gilardino over 90, and TWO CLEAN SHEETS vs the European and World Champions. If that doesn’t mean we should give him more time and cut him some slack, I don’t know what to say. Plus, I actually think together with Cesc and Flam, he’s got the natural leadership required in a young team too. After Gallas, there’s a professional, passionate fellow called Kolo who’ll be ready to lead. But looking at the next generation, we have 3 leaders in Cesc, Flam and Senderos.

PS: Mr Mathieu Flamini is turning 24 tomorrow. :)

  38. Walcott & Diaby injured….again? WTF

  39. Senderos; distribution is good when he has the time. good football brain but lacks speed.

Traore; “going backwards”? He’s 18? This is normal, the progress of most players at this age is inconsistent.

Walcott v Bentley: Play Walcott every game and it will ruin him, either injury through over playing(Owen) or lose confidence. Cesc and a few others are exceptions not the rule. Personally, I can’t see Rooney having a full career, too heavy and already playing too much

Finally, when everyone was writing us off (Gooners, you know who you are), some of us were more patient and optimistic. Similarly, great result but we’ve won nothing. As Arsene states “humility”

  40. G4E, were you responding my post above? Or did you find out about the injuries yourself? Cos it says it’s still awaiting moderation for me.

  41. I found it on Arsenal dot com Lou

  42. Your comment about that is not there yet?

  43. Not yet, cos I said “sh;t” in it probably – exactly referring to the injuries. Anyway.

  44. Diaby & Walcott’s injuries and Eboues’ continuing suspension will probably mean that Denilson returns to the team against Wigan – on the right of midfield, with Hleb on the left flank and RVP upfront alongside Adebayor.

  45. I dont know what u ppl r so hyped about. It was as if Milan had come to provide a training match to you ppl, no pressure and sometimes their defending was also slack. Will see ya if u face an english opponent in qtr finals, better hope it wont be united.

  46. it’sUnited….your’re jusy jealous…Milan wiped the San Siro with your A$$es last year.

  47. Well u know tht…Milan r totally crap nowadays..pathetic standing in serie A..and their age factor has overtaken their talent…thts y u scumbags were able to win…just waiting 2 see ya crash out of qtrs against an english side..oh yeah

  48. And tht fabric-ass about whom u r so boasting…he put tht goal in a fluke..he cant stand slight pressure and has no other skills othr thn passing….far from ronaldo’s quality…boo

  49. Dream on….your over-inflated team will burst into nothing soon.

And the red nosed idiot will be crying, so will you….now you go find a stupid Man urine blog

  50. Hey “itsUnited” welcome to a really sensible blog. I’m so glad you took the trouble to find us. After our respective European games this week I’m not surprised that you decided to visit an Arsenal blog – after all, there can’t be much of interest on your club’s blogs after you scraped past Lyon. Your name’s not Ethan, is it, by any chance?

  51. Lou

I would guess that perhaps you are right about why your comment was moderated but as far as I can see, it was not one of my moderation ‘traps’ that you walked into.

As for the troll, feed him if you must and I must, I’m afraid. What he seems to have overlooked is that if two English teams meet, the PL type of game goes out of the window, conditions in which United thrive. It becomes a European match and whilst the players know each other, the style of game is different.

And of course, Arsenal have a certain motivation called pride that wants to prove that the 0-4 FA Cup result whilst thoroughly merited as a scoreline was ‘a bad day at the office’.

    YW

  52. I think he is gone now Yogi, he wouldn’t survive around here. :)

  53. Whatever u say…u cant deny tht fab-ass is crap before Ronaldo…who ll once again help us win loads of silverware and glory this year

  54. YW, I think you’re right regarding how English teams play differently in Europe, even if they face English opponents.

Guys, if you just ignore those idiots, they’ll go away. We don’t need their opinions about our team and certainly don’t need any stupid wind-up either.

You could say that and you would be entitled to your opinion.

However, any validity to your arguments is lost through exceptionally poor grammatical standards. Please show your comments to your teacher and ask them to correct the errors. Print out your contributions so that said teacher can take great delight in striking through all of the mistakes with a red biro.

When you have corrected the aforementioned errors and learnt from them, this should enable you to form a cogent argument about the merits of the two players and why you believe that Ronaldo is better.

Once you have achieved this, you will find that you can face the world and aim higher in your chosen career than ending each sentence with,
‘Do you want fries with that?’

  56. I would say not on our watch Lou, there are other crappy blogs for that troll.

But, I will take your advise for now :)

  57. Just had 4 of that guys comments pop up on my blog, what a fool.

    Fab-ass

    What a degenerate.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted abuse on a rivals teams blog?

    That’s mancs for you.

  58. Yeah G4E, it takes two or more to complete the loop of a wind-up after all lol. If you stop feeding the troll, he can’t keep going on his own.

On Wigan, I’m thinking how did we come back to this ‘bare bones’ scenario?! With Eboue still suspended (he really should learn from this), Theo and Diaby injured, I guess we have to play Hleb on the left, Denilson or the right. Or bring in Gilberto in the middle and have Cesc in RM (I seem to recall such a setup in one instance this season).

Up front, we don’t want to risk RvP if he only ‘came through unscathed’ after their behind-closed-doors game on Thur. No choice but Ade-Bendtner then. No creative players other than a half-match-fit RvP on the bench..?!

  59. Good reply to the wee lad YW. If we do draw an English team in the next round the biggest difference will be in the referee. Most FIFA refs will not allow the “kick ‘em to stop ‘em” attitude.

  60. What I question, is why play a game like this with players you need for Wigan, when we just came out of a grueling game on Tuesday?…unless it was like a training session.

  61. Their Gilberto not a patch on ours. haha

  62. Quote from Arsene on the Bentley crap.

“What is important is what the player really wants. When you are in one of the biggest clubs in the world you have to accept competition and if you accept it, it makes you better. If you move down you are down, not at the top.

    Classic.

  63. Spurs to win all domestic trophies next year

  64. Steve, I also like this part of Arsene’s quote on Bentley:

“Bentley is entitled to his opinion but it does not mean he is right. I don’t know why one player should incite another player to leave a club. It is not his job.”

Imagine that idiot’s face hearing this. Priceless.

Sorry, I’ve given it more attention than I’d wanted to, or I thought I would. Have no time for any ex-player who constantly talks about us in a small-minded way. So I’ll stop right here.

  65. St. Totts day nears.

  66. Sorry, I actually meant to share with you a good piece from Vital Arsenal on Bentley. Now I’ll stop. :D

  67. Jamie

Just thought I’d pop in and say, ‘Hi, Hugs, and St Totts day has all but arrived. Eleven games to go, tops that the Tiny’s can get is 65 points which is curiously enough the same total we have now’.

So, do you want fries with that?

    YW

  68. Can Sp*rs win the FA Vase?

  69. Didn’t Spuds lose today? The CC gone to their heads….now they think they’re the invincibles.

  70. Hey I’m not an expert in this St Totts Day thing. But technically speaking, don’t we have this small problem of goal difference to take into account? In view of that, the gap between the two teams’ goal differences is, er, 32 – and how did they get only +4 in GD btw?!?! To put it in perspective, 32 also happens to be the total amount of home goals we’ve scored so far this season.

In other words, if Spurs keep winning every game and score 32 goals in those 11 games without conceding until at the end of the season, they’ll be where we are now. So doesn’t that technically make St Totts Day potentially this Sunday if we beat Wigan and they drop points? Btw, this week they’ll host their dearest neighbours West Ham.

  71. Yeah I watched the 2nd half of the Spurs-PSV game on ITV. Remember how they laughed when we got knocked out by the same opponents in last year’s CL? Well at least we didn’t lose at home. When Berbatov started sulking again, you just know this Coke Cup won’t be enough to tie him there.

  72. Lou

And therein is the flaw in the plan for Tottenham. They have to win all of their games by an average of 1.5 goals better than the opposition whilst we have to lose all of ours by more than 1 goal….

    YW

  73. Come on guys everyone in the media said totts would take 4th place from us this season. Even the “expert pundits on TV”. They cannot all be wrong CAN THEY? :)

  74. Lou: Wet Spam got a hiding last week from their other mates at Chel$ki, I bet they do not want a repeat of that.

  75. Er.. right, that’s why I had to ask. So if we outperform Spurs points-wise in the next game, St Totts Day arrives at 6pm this Sunday!

  76. U got it Lou.

  77. We should know by half time Sunday as the Totts kick off at 3 and if they do not win it is all over for them AGAIN. No bad chefs involved honest.

  78. West Ham have lost 4-0 twice in a row, now this. What kind of fixtures are those? Fulham away (I know, but still a derby), Chelsea home, Liverpool away, now Spurs away, then Blackburn home, Everton away. Wish them good luck with all those injuries…

  79. They will be in trouble at Blackburn as Bentley (self confessed better than any gunner) plays his socks off for BR, or so he thinks.

  80. [...] A Cultured Left wants to start “beating every team in the world” by taking three points at Wigan. [...]

  81. Just realised West Ham still have 9 players out injured. Seems like they’re the only team consistently worse than us in terms of injuries. Maybe we need to wait a bit for the official arrival of St Totts Day..

  82. Not if we get a least a point on Sunday Lou. Even if the scum win 1 point is enough. 3 is much preferred though.

  83. Oh right, yeah. See, told you I wasn’t familiar with this thingy. Of course, here’s to 3 points and STD this Sunday!

  84. We’ve just report
the top blogs of the day

  85. Boys, St. Totts day was last weekend. With 10 games to go we lead the Spuds by 33 points.

  86. Ah no, they’ve got that game in hand!
