Masterclass In The San Siro

UEFA Champions League
Round of Sixteen, Second Leg

AC Milan 0 – 2 Arsenal
Arsenal win 2 – 0 on aggregate

0 – 1 Fabregas (84)
0 – 2 Adebayor (90)

Ladies, Gentlemen, if you cannot enjoy an evening such as last night then it is truly time to pack up and walk away from football. The lows suffered always make the highs more beautiful to savour. Going into the match on the back of indifferent form and leaving your hosts acknowledging the margin of victory to be a fair reflection is always satisfying for fans so it ought to be for the players and staff as well. When those hosts are the reigning European Champions and a club with such a venerable history in the competition, it is a reflection of the stature of the achievement.

It was the complete team performance that we know that they are capable of, the best so far in 2008. The defending started from Adebayor to the back four and when Almunia was beaten, there was a man on the line. That the man was Fabregas sums up the evening; he chose the ultimate game to rediscover his form. Having been subdued in recent weeks, he emerged from his shell to dominate the midfield, prompting Adebayor and Hleb forwards with a full range of passing that stretched the Milan midfield and back four all evening. The middle quintet worked hard, enjoying varying degrees of success but all rarely giving their opponents time and space. When they did, it was individual brilliance from Kaka and Pato that created openings which were spurned.

Defensively, the team held firm and coped with most that was thrown at them with only a couple of real scares. The flanks were well marshalled by Clichy and Sagna whilst Gallas and Senderos got to grips with the Milan forwards. The Swiss international had a couple of his nervy minutes but was considerably better than commentator Clive Tyldesley’s description of being ‘prone to hapless moments’. Well, Clive, his moments come less frequently than yours do which is every time you open your mouth.

The opening salvos from Milan were answered with equal venom. Maldini’s header cleared off the line was met with the perfect riposte as Kalac’s fingertips were stung by Adebayor’s drive. As the game wore on, Arsenal emerged as more dominant, dictating the play. Hleb hassled, harried and dribbled around his opponents on a mission, providing support to Adebayor up front, never letting a gap emerge to leave the Togolese isolated against the Milan back four.

Half time often brings a loss of momentum; not last night. Within two minutes of the restart, Senderos was unable to wrap his foot around the ball when it fell to him and he shot straight at the Australian. It was however a sign that the form of the first forty-five minutes had not been lost by the interval. Moments later, Adebayor capitalised on sloppy play by Pirlo and fed Eboue on the right side of the penalty area, the shot sliced wide under pressure.

And so the game continued with Arsenal dominating possession, Milan breaking sporadically. When they did, they found the netting behind the goal more regularly than testing Almunia. With the game drawing to a close, Alexander Hleb wrested control in the centre of the pitch and fed Fabregas in the centre circle, a matter of feet inside the Milan half. Given the space, he moved forward and from thirty yards out, shot. Mindful that his effort in the first half had caused the woodwork to shudder, he kept the ball low and watched as it curled low into the bottom corner. It does not matter that Canadian Redwood’s have hit the ground faster than the Milan ‘keeper; all that counts is the ball spinning around the side and back of the net before nestling contentedly behind Kalac.

Having failed to score in the previous one hundred and seventy-four minutes of the tie, Milan sensed that twice in ten minutes was too much. The mountainous task became impossible when in injury time Walcott gave Kaladze a head start and still out-sprinted him to the ball. Having been on the pitch twenty minutes, he showed the same composure he had fifteen minutes earlier to pass across the face of the goal. This time, Kalac’s knee could not stop the ball reaching Adebayor who chose the same corner of the goal as Fabregas into which to deposit the ball. Quite possibly the best win in the club’s European history was sealed.

Arsene enjoyed the evening, overcome by emotion on the touchline, clutching onto Cesc after he scored like there was no tomorrow. The only thing missing was a headlock and Arsene slurring, “I love you like a brother” whilst ruffling the little Spaniard’s hair with his knuckles. After the match he was fulsome in his praise,

I believe that Fabregas, [Alexander] Hleb and [Mathieu] Flamini in the middle of the park delivered. They didn’t give Milan room. They defended very well and, when we had the ball, they had support from the flanks in [Bacary] Sagna and [Gaël] Clichy and supported them well. That gives them solutions. They did a good job defensively as well as going forward. The whole team did a good defensive job

Carlo Ancelotti conceded that the better team over the two legs won the tie,

I think over the 180 minutes they were able to play the way they know how and Milan didn’t achieve that with consistency. The credit goes to Arsenal, who pushed us all over the field and kept the pressure up

Cesc meanwhile enjoyed the moment but kept a level head,

To win in Milan 2-0, it is amazing. William [Gallas] said before the game enjoy the atmosphere. That is what we did. But this is just the beginning. We are now in the quarter-finals but we have not done anything. It is just one more step

The officiating left a lot to be desired as it always seems to on such days. There were wrong decisions such as Hleb being booked for diving after he had been fouled and Eboue’s showed the official being suckered by some acting, but it was the way for both teams and in that sense the officials were consistent. What was happening on the touchlines is anyone’s guess with Catweazle and his mop of busy hair interfering with his view on one side and a distant relative of Magnus Pike on the other, arms raised and moving around any time that the ball came near him.

Reality bites though and Wigan are now on the radar. Robin van Persie might well be fitter and perhaps able to play some part on Sunday. The squad is for the most part getting fitter and returning to the team as the run-in just got extended by at least two more games. For now though, the radiant sunshine this morning seems so much brighter.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. awesome!

  2. At last we can say…what a match! Who doesn’t believe Arsenal credentials for the Champions League and the Premiership? Roll on Wigan. Arsene got the tactics spot on. The whole team proved how good they are and all need to be regarded as first team players. 2-0 at the San Siro!!

  3. Great review Yogi and yes what a night, i agree probably the best euro result in the club’s history.
Its great hearing the so called experts on Talk Sport having to concede we were fantastic which makes it even more sweeter.
I hate to cast a shadow but Arsene has his work cut out now to bring the players down to earth as a trip to Wigan is a far cry from the heights of the San Siro.
But im going to let him worry about that as i am now going to wollow in that wonderful night of pride.
Its great to be a Gooner but never more so than NOW

  4. I take the view that this will lift the weight off the shoulders and allow us to blow Wigan off the park.

  5. I’m still floating – I barely slept last night and will be grinning ear to ear all day. I want to savour every drop of this momentous victory – there’s plenty of time to think about Wigan later this week. Cesc is clearly focused on the next game as I’m sure all the players will be, but as fans, these are the moments we live for!

  6. Looking ahead – the only team I would be afraid of Arsenal facing in the CL is Man U. I think we have the class and the confidence to beat Barcelona, Inter etc but Man U knows us too well.
Here is hoping they get knocked out by Barca.

What a fantastic result last night

  7. I was in seventh heaven last night, although, i must say the ref once again made it extremely difficult for us… It’s getting a little tedious now, it’s almost as if FIFA have asked the ref’s to be extra bias in order to justify the away goal rule! How the f*ck we did’n't get a penalty when that big horrible f*cker Nesta took out Hleb is beyond me, and Hleb’s caution was insult to injury.
Negatives aside, i thought it was a complete performance… I thought Cesc & Flamini were out of this world. I’d like to see Flamini with the captains arm band on next season & a whacking 5 year BIG MONEY contract – he’s earnt it in my opinion.
Up the Arse – I f*ckin’ love em!

  8. Enjoy the moment……….We did to Milan what Manutd couldnt do to them last year…

I dont have anything else to say…I am feeling the same way as Passenel has been….

  9. As I was watching us play, (even before we scored) I was already proud. We played like we were the home team, and I was thinking This is the Arsenal I love to watch.
The match must have been one of the greatest matches for the neutral, but God the tension was thick. and What an atmosphere! I wish the grove had an atmosphere like that. Got a bit scared when Gilberto was introduced, but I guess AW took no chance with hleb’s yellow and felt it was time to close. I sincerely believe If we play like that every week, very few team can touch us. We can do this. Thank u Arsenal for a brilliant night!

  10. Just magnificent. All the better for being against such a quality side. Just think: Milan’s defense was almost flawless, and they were very dangerous in spurts on the attack. We lacked composure in the final third, and there were a LOT of giveaways, especially by our “wingers”. Despite all that, we played them right off their hallowed pitch. Dominant. The only thing more exciting than the victory is that it was not our best offensive effort by far.

For Wigan, the most important thing is Cesc’s return to form.

The only vague regret is that I hate that the ref will not take more heat for the most atrocious call I can remember. It was a penalty, clearly. Calling an outside the box free kick would have been annoying. Letting it go as a “no foul” would have been infuriating. But a yellow for diving just beggars belief. As Hleb was saying, one would have to be blind. Now he’s on a yellow for the duration. The huge positive is that we just kept playing through it.

  11. The night the team remembered how good they can be. They excelled in every department.

Two memories will remain with me for a long time. Lehman’s genuine look of pleasure joining in Cesc’s goal celebration and Walcott’s speed and composure in setting up the second goal.

I swear I woke up this morning still with a satisfied grin on my face. I can’t remember deriving more enjoyment from watching us on television.

Committed from the start, no lead to protect, first to the ball and with a clear determination, not just to win, but to show the World, that this team can compete with the best, playing the brand of attractive football that gooners everywhere know this team can produce.

No-one should underestimate the importance of this victory or its manner of achievement. I now expect really good things for the rest of the season.

I thought the Villa game was to be the match that defined our season and I was downcast after that match. I was wrong.

  12. why arsene took so long to bring on theo is the only question i have, he should start ahead of eboue. but what a result, didyou guys know that of recent teams that knock out milan lift the the trouphy.

  13. To be a Gooner is a 100% deal. Supporting a footballl club inevitably brings it’s highs and lows. Great Clubs have hard times, Manchester United had to wait thirty years or so to win the league title again and Liverpool are similarly going through the same difficulties.

We have an arkward run, in a season where our chances were written off before a ball was kicked and out come the questioners, the doubters, worringly out come our own. Yesterday some of the posts here were vile. In adversity, we need to stand together. If somehow Spurs win the Premiership, We won’t crumble we’ll stand chin in the air and bare their taunts, with an inner strength and certainty.

What is important is we stand together. If you do not like a player or he has a poor performance, hold your tongue for a while. Lend your support. I read a post here last night, where an initial reaction to the match was to criticise two of our players. That’s not being in the game, for the right reasons.

I thought we were magnificent last night and I implore every man at the club, from the Youth team thorugh to the board to persuade Flamini to sign a new deal.

  14. Good article Yw great to see this team really showing its true potential. We must be worrying all those now left in the CL. I cant say anymore other than the comments I made this morning, truly a real inspiring game for us.

confidentgoner, your comments are right by why cant you just let us enjoy the moment without walking around with that black cloud over your head. We all know the game is not over but this was a great moment for us. Smell the roses and enjoy the sunshine lad, tomorrow it may rain but today the sun is shinning.

  15. I woke up with a grin too. Lovely days. Puts to bed an awful two weeks, and hopefully our brilliant form of the start of the season will be resumed. Fingers crossed.

I have a Man Utd friend who I discuss football with, hes one of the few fans who loves the game for what it is, and thus, both of us supporting teams that play good football, we usually have good discussions full of respect for the other team. Not last night. Despite his team going through on Ronaldo’s 30th goal in 30 games, he couldnt take any pleasure from it. He was a little drunk I think, and thus his true colours came out, and while he didnt say it, I could tell that he was spiteful because we beat Milan on their home ground emphatically, while his team crashed out last year 3-0 there.

And there was fear, too. While Man Utd struggled to beat Lyon, we put in our performance of the season. Man United, and their fans, and all the other teams we face, will have fear and a healthy amount of respect reinjected into their systems. And this is will play into our hands.

    UP THE ARSENAL!

  16. Congrats to all gunners.

One thing has been consistent this season and that is that the rose tinted brigade have had much more to rejoice over than the doom sayers. Long may this continue into May!

This team can only get better and it is the passing on of the baton of some sorts. We should do Milan a favour and go ahead to win it; they will then be happier to have lost to us.

I am always happier when the team we have lost to in a competition go ahead to win. It shows that we lost to the champs!

    Up the Gunners

  17. No matter that I had an hour of sleep before 6 hours of class, I had to blog about the experience, and bring my subjectivity into such an epic.

Great post as usual YW, in my euphoria I cannot dissect the team’s performance in the controlled state of mind that you have displayed.

The power of the Gunners stretches across continents indeed. Its never too late to hope twice.

  18. Let the record show that Arsenal dominated, then knocked out, the reigning European & World (club) Champions.

What a performance and what a result!

    Well done to all concerned.

I think that one of the key reasons why we generally looked rock solid defensively was because of Senderos’s aerial dominance.

We look so much more solid and defensively competent when we have at least one of our central defenders who can win most – if not all – of the balls in the air.

I think this issue presents Arsene with an interesting selection dilemma, particularly once Toure is fit & available for selection.

But thats’ to think about on another day. Today is for celebrating our glorious victory at the San Siro.

  19. yesterday’s performance form the Gunners were truly awesome.. it was worth waiting till 1:15am in the night to watch the match. I too couldnt sleep afterwards and still having a mile long smile..

The entire team played beautifully from the start to the end.. Hope the Gunners take this form to the remaining games in the season and get the double..

Come on Gunners.. lets do it.. Lets do the double.. For Eduardo and Sagna’s brother.

  20. Got in at 4.00am from Milan.

It was just an awesome performance, the Milan fans and players looked shell shocked at how good we were and that’s dispite Eboue & Diaby looking out of position at times and Ade constantly failing to stay on side.

Milan are definately in need of a rebuild but they are World Club Champions not just European.

Interesting talking to a number of supporters who only go to away games as they can’t face the lack of atmosphere at the Emirates.

  21. Great game and great result. Haven’t enjoyed myself in front of the TV since the Madrid game.

Yogi you were a bit harsh pointing out:

Clive Tyldesley’s description of being ‘prone to hapless moments’.

He did says it and it also irked me at the time but the ITV commentary and analysis is so much better that the rubbish that the BBC and SKy put over that they can be forgiven for this error.
Can we appeal Hleb’s card? The ref would have to rescind it if he looked at the video evidence, it would certainly be worth it.

  22. Some more thoughts…ITV really blew it bigtime last night – in scheduling terms – by shunting the Milan-Arsenal game over onto ITV4, when, as the game of the night, in which history was being made, it should clearly have been live on ITV1, for the whole nation to see, rather than broadcast on a junior digital channel.

    Shame on them.

  23. Great day to be in work. Absolutely delighted!!
I posted yesterday and got the 2 goalscorers right but went for 2-1.

Couple of things of note. Hlebs card!! They need to rescind it. The guy could miss a semi or final for that.
But on to the positives. Walcott for the second goal made an absolute MUG of Kiladze. If you watch closely, he slowed when he knew he had him, tempting him into the tackle, then left him for dead on the sideline. Magnificent play. The first sign of genius I’ve seen from Theo in the red of Arsenal and a great sign for the future.

Finally, as all the plaudits are going to Cesc this morning and rightly so, I’d like to highlight the great work of Flamini. He was immense last night. The Milan team should start nicknaming Gattuso after Flamini as he was taught a lesson on being a defensive midfielder.
Bravo lads!! Thanks for another wonderful european night.

  24. [...] If Arsenal can just learn to shoot more often rather than trying to walk the ball in, even at the San Siro, they will be an even more effective unit. [...]

  25. Wonderful performance, wonderful team, and well done to the majority of the fans on this forum believing in the team yesterday.

Special praise to Cesc, Hleb and Flamini who ran the match. Well done to Diaby who I backed yesterday against many complaining fans and who contributed well, he was strong, and his ability to beat men was excellent at the start of the game, helped us to establish our superiority. Well done to Eboue who I’ve slagged off in recent times, but who also contributed well in the first half. Well done to Gael Cliche who made up for his horror against Birmingham, by making a brilliant recovery tackle on Inzaghi. Well done to Gallas who rose to the occasion after some suspect performances, he covered brilliantly for a somewhat haphazard performance by Philipe. Well done to Arsene for getting the tactics and line-up spot-on for once. Well done to Walcott who’s now made three impressive performances in a row, his confidence is for the first time is building from game to game, his career starts here.

Boooooo to ITV, who decided the public should be treated like battery-chickens, fed a constant diet of Man Utd, when there was a more tasty free-range dish available. If this is their approach to football / ratings, then I hope the BBC take the next contract. Even if the BBC is packed full of c*nts, they’re more likely to give each of our teams a share of the limelight.

  26. Don’t know how many of you watched the game on Setanta, but Senderos gave an interview after the game and came across brilliantly. The question was put to him that many people had questioned this team and wrote them off as title / CL contenders.
    His reply??? “We didn’t!”
The spirit in this team is magnificent. Big things to come over the next few years!

  27. IFlamini

  28. Flamini – future Arsenal captain perhaps?

  29. this is for me the most wellbalanced & well written arsenal blog right now…keep up the good work yogi! oh & fabregas for EVERY SINGLE individual honour next year! hahaha

  30. firstly have to say i dont remember anyone on here being pessimistic about the game! the only people that knew we were gunner win were us gooners and the team itself!

in 25 years of watching the arse i dont think i have seen a better performance!!

and itv and talk sport are man u arse lickers!

  31. Wow, what a game! We really showed everyone what we’re capable of.

It was a team performance but you have to say the trio of Hleb, Cesc and Flamini were simply awesome.

Hboy – I thought Senderos was immense, especially considering his confidence must have been knocked after the og. The whole back 4 in fact were great.

    Bring on the next round!

  32. YW brilliant report as usual. I particularly liked this line:
“Arsene enjoyed the evening, overcome by emotion on the touchline, clutching onto Cesc after he scored”.
cesc really rose to the occasion. that is the sign of a great player. Hleb and Flamini next to him played near their capacity as well and that was the basis for the performance.

Will wenger keep Hleb in a central role now or with RVP back does that mean Hleb can only play wide? certainly in europe, this is the formation to use. RVP would have to sit the away games out.

I would love to get Barcelona in the next round. dont want an English club, dont want a small name like Fenerbache and dont want Inter Milan or Real Madrid. Yes Barca would be lovely. shame for Messi though as he is out for 6 weeks or more with a hamstring.

I am trying to think of a better performance by Arsenal in the last 15 years. can anyone think of one? I am thinking this might be the best performance I have ever seen.

  33. “It does not matter that Canadian Redwood’s have hit the ground faster than the Milan ‘keeper; all that counts is the ball spinning around the side and back of the net before nestling contentedly behind Kalac.”

It was a beutifully placed shot too. Cesc knew where he wanted it to go, and it went there.

Such a sweet evening. The whole team were excellent, but Fab and Flam were out of this world, and could possibly be better than the Petit/PV4-paring if they can continue on that form. Flam needs to sign the dotted line, tho’.

  34. Old Timer, I take the bait, but am a die hard arsenal fan for over 15years now! Don’t get me wrong, am still over the moon for this victory!

I was reacting mainly to previous posts! Up the Arse!!

  35. Cesc, Hleb & Flamini were the pick & the rest were magnificent including Diaby & Eboue, who were doing a lot of really great support work.

Wish I had your way with words, YW.
That Canadian Redwood analogy for the Aussie double sheep shagger was brilliant.

Like Kelsey S, I had to smile at Jen’s grin & his playful dozen whacks on Cesc’s head.

This performance does certainly rank as one of the best in my time. Worth much more than a CC win. Even if we don’t win it.

  36. if nothing else the game needs to serve as a boost for the premier league assault. if we dont go onto win the CL then it matters not. it wont make this win any less sweet. we still remember the bernabeu with fondness even though we did not win it that year. it was a great win against a great team and no one can take that away from us.
    Now team for Wigan…
    Seriously.

    Almunia
    Sagna Sendy/Toure Gallas Clichy
    Walcott Flam Cesc Hleb
    RVP Ade

bench: Bendtner, Diaby, Gilberto, Hoyte/Sendy, Lehmann

There’s always the next game to think of!

  37. It is snowing a storm here in Toronto and yet today seems awfully bright :)

Why oh why, can we not shoot from outside the box more often… no complaints though, what a win!

  38. Jer – I can understand why you were pleased with Senderos, I just don’t think it was one of his best, it was a bit hap-hazard for me with his decision making. The header onto Inzaghi was very poor and the italians wouldn’t have made a mistake like that if we’d bombarded them all evening, and there were a few times when he missed tackles and ended up adrift in midfield. That said, he kept at it, and got better as the game went on, until by the end of the match when he was back to dominating the defence, which is what he does best. He played better against Milan at home for me though.

Gazzap – Personally, I wouldn’t keep Hleb in this position. Last night was great, but we have to remember something, we didn’t polish Milan off, and for long periods, it looked as if somehow we’d end up regretting it. On another night, we will regret it. Against PSV last year, we regretted it. This isn’t entirely by bad fortune, we’re playing with one up front and even though Alex is my favourite player, he’s never going to score goals. For me, I can’t wait to have Van Persie back, and Alex back to the right, where I still feel he does his best work. That said, horses for courses, and the more conservative approach seems ideally suited away in europe.

  39. it is good we can all agree!!! fantastic performance. what was most pleasing was how Fab/Flam/Helb & ade all really stepped up when we needed it. i thought flamini was particularly good. hopefully this will drive us on for the rest of the season.

  40. Who now believes Wenger was wrong to play weakened teams in the Carling(Mickey Mouse) cup and the FA cup.Wenger got his priorites right. We are going after the big two trophies. He said all along that he was only bothered in winning two trophies this season.
Last night was our best performance ever in Europe.Dont believe that Milan were an ageing team they weren”t saying that after the 1st leg.

  41. I too would rather see RVP playing alongside Ade, when he returns, for most games. But just the big man up front works really well those tricky away games against the better teams.

You cant say it is an overly defensive formation, look at the chances we created last night. It just gives that extra man in midfield to help outnumber the opposition midfield and win the ball back.

Ade worked his bolox off, as he needed to do, which enabled those penetrating runs from midfield. Sure he lost the ball a few times and didnt find a player with every pass, but he was up against one of the best defences in europe on his own, and deserved his goal in the end

  42. does anyone know where you can find the stats of distance covered from last night’s game? I want to know how far Flamini ran. I cant find anything about distance on the UEFA website.

  43. gazzap, even if you did keep Hleb in a central role, RVP has played the wing just fine for Holland (and us, IIRC). But frankly I would rather have RVP up front and Hleb on the wing.

My preferred that I never got to see was Ade/Dudu up front both RVP/Hleb on the wings, and Ros/Theo coming on as subs at 70.

Speaking of depth, I will be forever grateful for Seedorf’s injury balancing out RVP/Ros. We DESTROYED them in the middle of the field.

  44. gazzap I seem to remember Sky Sports News showing the stats last night.

It was something like Flam – 13 Miles, Cesc 12 Miles, Gattuso 11 miles

  45. I just think it’s hilarious (and telling) that the one team that keeps breaking these “first English team to beat so-and-so on their home ground” records is the one PL team with the fewest Englishmen. Guess that’s the only way to beat those records. :-)

How wonderful to see Theo do so well on the big stage, I just wish AW would’ve brought him on earlier. I’m tired of seeing Eboue play, I wish he could be sold. He’s indifferent, ineffective, useless.

    Loved the Wenger-Cesc hug. :-)

  46. “It was something like Flam – 13 Miles, Cesc 12 Miles, Gattuso 11 miles”

Gattuso – was he even playing last night? hardly remember him getting a touch of the ball :)

  47. Damn, Yogi… that first paragraph reads like poetry. Well done.

It appears as if I’m not alone in the “still floating” category. A great night be a great gunners side. Down in the history books wit this one. Poor, poor, Wigan… they will receive the thrashing of their lives come Sunday.

  48. Too soon to talk about dishing out thrashings, I don’t think we’re going to get what we deserve in the long run, until we get Van Persie back. I think RVP gives us a bit of that Man Utd-esque cutting-edge. Every game we go into I know we’re going to have more ball, better ball, but it’s hard to know where the goals are coming from right now. It took a 35-yarder from Cesc last night, and if Adebayor doesn’t get put on his shooting boots, it may take the same against Wigan. Don’t mistake that for a complaint, on today of all todays, I’m just saying we deserve our beautiful football to be rewarded and to do that, we need clear goal-scoring opportunities. We’re creating plenty of half-chances at the moment, but not any 1-on-1’s. I’m also very encouraged by Theo’s improvement, he could make a big contribution to the end of this season, especially if the team can learn to play the ball in behind the defence, as we saw last night. These balls to his feet are no good at all, we need to use his pace in behind, we want him running without the ball.

  49. Flamin covered just over 8 miles with Cesc second just over 7 miles.

  50. +i

  51. Hboy,

Pirlo actually gave the ball to Ade on his 18 yard box like a school boy who never played football before.
Ease up on Senderos man, he only had one mistake in the entire game against AC Milan, he cut out like 1500 high balls after that and was actually great….I don’t care if he sends the ball to raw Z or even outside the staduim in a game like this.

  52. How anyone can dismiss Senderos last night is beyond me. Rock rock solid, except for one mistake. He’s a different player in the CL, and he hasn’t done too badly in recent league games either. People ask why AW persists with him, well just re-watch that game last night.

  53. Another look at “Wenger hugging his kids”. Many of our respected fans would like to Axe out any young player who doesn’t perform to their liking in a specific season. Wenger treats these players as his own kids, and it is hard for some fans to understand that.

For example, your own kid is a very smart kid, you know he is good enough to be something but then he gets bad school results one year, what would you do? Axe him out of school, or try to find what the problem is and deal with it to get him/her back on track?

It’s different at Arsenal, I love my club the way it is……..Eboue, Diaby frustrate me a lot, but I’m sure if I had my own kid who will frustrate me sometimes….but I will never get rid of him/her because of that…..It’s my responsibility to teach them and make them successful.

  54. Good post as usual YW!I cant remember a more sweeter and more dominant performance.AC Milan were comprehensively outshone and outplayed and ALL the team desreve collective praise for this.I was jumping up and down like a maniac yesterday!Well done to all the Arsenal boys for finally showing the rest of Europe what we always new they were about! The only thing Im annoyed about is that I didnt put a bet on the score line. I also had to take back my doubts about diaby who played very well in an attacking midfield role.

And come on hboy if you cant enjoy a historic victory like this one without picking holes in it I dont know when else you will. It is frustrating being a fan, going through a myriad of emotions but as an Arsenal fan Im going to wallow in this moment and Ive enjoyed all the two faced press and pundits retracting their statements and choking on humble pie. As for RVP where not doing too bad without him. he can only make us stronger.

  55. Hi all,

I’m a little late to offer my thoughts, but it has a long and busy day here in Toronto.

I wanted to offer my experience of the game yesterday, alas I wasn’t there but enjoyed all I saw. I luckily was able to see the majority of the game on TV (not easy here because they love Manchester United for TV coverage), and let me tell you I sit here today as a very proud Arsenal supporter. I am proud that the club played to there potential and achieved a result that shall indeed go down as one of the best in our history.

The passing whilst not perfect was purposeful and the pace frightening at times for a Milan team that has pedigree. There are those that may try and narrow the achievement with blunt statements concerning the age of the Milan squad, but this is the same team that last year accounted for both Manchester United and Liverpool. In fact any such statements should be met with the appropriate level of indignation. There are defining moments for all teams whether they are viewed in light of championships gained or lost, last night was a water shed in as much as it brings the team an understanding of their potential on the ‘Football’ stage. It may come to pass that this season well not be met with Arsenal silverware, but the potential on display was inspiring. As an Arsenal fan I have often enjoyed the flow of the ball as it shifts from foot to foot as players in the famous red and white ply there trade, but Milan was special. I sat back with coffee in hand, a smile brimming with admiration and confidence. I watched in awe as the Milan fans provided a standing ovation to the players as they left the field, something not seen since Portsmouth.

As a fan of the beautiful game, I wanted to be there and applaud, to stand shoulder to shoulder with those lucky few fan supporting both teams. Yesterday, in the rain swept skies of Italy the game became the winner, not a team. The artists both old and new plied their trades on a canvas so famed.

Today, I am both a proud Arsenal and Football fan.

I am tempted to write again, the verse trembling at mine lips… but a master piece speaks for itself.

  56. if anyone is still reading click on my name for a torrent of last nights game.

its a 900 meg mp4 so should be good quality.

For those of you not in the know download utorrent then click my name and enjoy.

    Spread the word!

  57. Sagna was brilliant. Has become one of the best right backs in the world I think.

  58. i watched a post game interview of seerdof and he said he hoped we win it.becoz we were clearly th better side in both legs, and were unlucky nt to get a few in th first…i love most of th milan players…such class
BUT,my dream fixture is arsenal/roma…playing my second fav team roma wud just put a huge one on my face!

  59. Thanks JK, is it from FBTZ?

  60. Good as usual YW.

Nothing I can add to what has already been said about our performance but I am in a delirious;y joyous mood the whole of yesterday and even now.
We played as a team and won it as a team.

Now onwards and upwards, lets win the whole lot!

Up The Arse! Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

  61. Just the delite of watching the boys play like that…. gr88 victory… butlooking forward….i think theo and rvp will have a big big part to our results this season…this is the opportunity for theo to come of age…”10 games that theo played”

I had written a blog sometime back on what could improve theo..Galls pointed out just the same and he is trying to do just that …carry unpredictibility with the speed of his feet. Hope he nails down wigan with a brace.
….RVP on the other hand can add the much needed imppetus to our set plays…in particular free kicks just outside the box…its amazing we have played all season without many free kick goals…and still are at top.

  62. I lost count of how many times I watched the last 20 minutes….it was just awesome.

I watched the game about 4 or 5 times already, from different networks, different languages (That I don’t understand) and it was still awesome.

Some are saying we beat an old team, they make me laugh…how pathetic they can get? Milan, with all the experience, fame, 80k+ staduim….with our 24 years age average team running circles around them is just awesome whichever way you look at it.

Moments like these are priceless and you have to inhale every minute of it as much as you can….this was a piece of history…I’m so grateful to live through it.

    Gunner 4 Ever

  63. Gunner4Ever

Let’s be honest here. Senderos has improved but he’s still the weak man in the back 4.

If Kolo is fit; I don’t see why he should sit on the bench for Senderos to play. I mean, nobody should even dream of that. He’s too prone to mistakes as proved on so many occassions. At best he’s only good as a sub for now. Really, both Djourou and Senderos are not good as first choice CB’s for a club like Arsenal, week in week out. It’s just too dangerous a risk to take.

Arsene should be looking for a CB in the summer, preferably, an English. He should be slowing down on his foreign recruitment now especially in areas where technicality is not crucial but strength and power is, like the defence.

Another weak point in the team is Eboue and Diaby. Diaby gives the ball away like throwing toys to a child. If he’s pushed in the midfield we will be in trouble as giving balls away in that central position will only endanger us. As for Eboue he should be off and I’m happy Theo seems to be coming good gradually.

I’ll prefer Hleb on the left and Theo on the right till Rosicky recovers.

  64. Howard,

Our first choice players are known to everyone. A 7 years old can pick the team if all are fit to play. That doesn’t mean in any way that Senderos, Djourou, Diaby, or Eboue are bad players at all. I have absolutely no problem seeing Kolo playing with Senderos and Gallas resting. You seem to forget this is Senderos that played great in CB in 2006 leading up to the CL final.

Don’t kid yourself mate, I would be surprised if Wenger signs any Cbacks this summer, if not any at all.

We have players the Boss believes in, you just don’t. Fair enough, I will go with the boss…call it brown nosing, call it what you may…he is the boss, and I like what he is doing for the club.

Look at what Fabregas is saying and I qoute
“Scoring that goal was one of the best moments of my career and I ran straight to the boss because without him I would never have had the chance to play in games like this.”

Something no one seems to understand in amaterialestic world, built on $$$ signs, diamond and gold….this is a sport with a business side, not a business for sports.
