A rumour without a leg to stand on will get around some other way
- John Tudor (the writer, not the former Newcastle player)
When is a transfer rumour not a transfer rumour? When one of the clubs involved blows the whole thing to smithereens by denying any truth and phoning the ‘selling’ club to distance themselves from the whole thing. Which is what Juventus have done with the Mathieu Flamini rumours doing the rounds,
There is nothing true. He’s a really good player, but we have never looked at him. Our chief officer has contacted the Gunners to reassure them. It’s a gesture that was needed considering the good relationship there must be between two big clubs like Juve and Arsenal, and that has been appreciated
Of course this only rules out one club and as Alex Hleb’s Agent
has found, old public pronouncements rehashed denying interest in Barcelona means only that Internazionale turn up as a destination instead. And there is the distinct possibility that this is all a clever ruse by the ‘Turin Giants’ with Mathieu joining them in June. Aah, ‘what tangled webs we do weave, when we practice to deceive’ as Sir Walter Scott once wrote.
Onto the weekend’s game with Villa. Arsene noted that the treatment room is going to be less crowded with Abou Diaby in the frame for a return whilst Kolo Toure is a possible for the second leg against Milan next week. That still leaves Alex Song, Tomas Rosicky, Robin van Persie and Johan Djourou racing to London Colney to be the first to put their towels on the treatment table, bagging the best spot before breakfast.
The return of Diaby alleviates some of the pressure on the forward line, giving Arsene the option of playing Hleb on the right and Diaby the other flank with Walcott up front. Walcott believes it might well be his chance to shine,
I feel upbeat, I feel confident. The goals helped and they gave me a boost so hopefully I can take that into Saturday. It was nice to get a poacher’s goal. My agents have told me I need more of those. Then the second was more about the kind of player I am. Left-foot too, which is something people have questioned me about. Now I just have to improve with every game and time will tell [if I can fill the striker’s role]. After all, the boss picks the team so when I do play I will just do my best
If Walcott can build on the two goals at St Andrews then more power to his elbow. Whether he will start up front remains to be seen with Bendtner presumably favourite to start alongside Adebayor. Robin van Persie is being touted as a possible Milan returnee although all Arsene confirms is that he will not be rushing the Dutchman back,
We will not rush Robin back but the news is quite good. It is very difficult to say [when he will be back in the team]. But he should come back into normal training very, very quickly now
Eduardo is not far from the players minds as Walcott noted,
It was a quiet coach ride home and felt just like a loss in truth. We had a couple of days off and then actually went bowling to keep our team-spirit up. A couple of lads went to see him yesterday and reported back to the rest of us. But we have tried to forget about it in a way and concentrate on Saturday. We don’t all want to rush there and then gradually stop. It will be more difficult for him in later months so we want to be there for him the whole time he is out
A team building exercise indeed. One hopes that Adebayor’s aim was rather more accurate than it had been at St Andrews although he probably borrowed the stand set aside for Walcott to put his ball on to aim down the lane.
The players seem to be refocused following Eduardo’s injury, at least ‘talking the talk’. Saturday will prove whether they can do the ‘walk’ associated with it.
Finally do not forget that those of you who wish to subscribe by email can do so by clicking here or by clicking on the link on the right entitled ‘ACLF by email’. ’til Tomorrow.

I certainly hope Bendtner will not start upfront with Ade on Saturday. It is absolutely clear both of the can’t work together….not because they hate each other, but they can’t co-ordinate together or they are very similar players in the air. You can see that both of them go for the same high ball in the box and getting in each others way.
I think Walcott should have the chance upfront with Ade, and Diaby on the left.

Old Timer, I hope you got my apology. I thought you personally made the 1-1 prediction for Saturday….my fault..Sorry again.

Interesting article from Harry Red, finally an English manager saying England should quit punting the ball and hope it will fall for someone to score, especially in the lower leagues.
Hmmmm, Does that make Wenger, 10 light years ahead of his counterparts in English football?

I’d also like to see Walcott start up front but I found this quote very odd: “my agents have told me I need more of those”. Why is he taking football advice from his agent?
By: Arirang on February 29, 2008

I also thought that was a rather strange thing to say, and probably a little bit worrying. When he starts scoring a bit more, will his ‘agent’ be pushing for a move to, say, Chelsea?

Or his agents pressuring him to score to cash in on the incentives in his contract tied to his performance? Something is fishy about this comment.

Apprehensive about tomorrow, which in some ways could be a blessing as I can hopefully then be pleasantly surprised as opposed to woefully disappointed. I feel it we can just get the 3 points, regardless of the performance or quality of play, for the next few games then confidence will be a lot higher in the run up and our performances will improve with the return of tommy gun and RVP.
Has anyone else seen this? It’s reassured me slightly about some of the nations supposed “journalists”:

Hi All, if anyone requires anymore motivation for tomorrow’s match, just read Mark Lawrenson’s preview below:
Arsenal need to get themselves back on track but Villa are playing really well and I think this might be a draw.
I’m still waiting for someone to explain William Gallas’s behaviour at Birmingham last weekend.
The Arsenal skipper sat on the ground near the half-way line after Birmingham were awarded a penalty late in the match.
In purely footballing terms, what if the penalty taker had struck the crossbar and the ball bounced out to the edge of the area. Where was Gallas to deal with that?
A few weeks ago people said that the only danger for Arsenal was the prospect of them imploding but I did not think it would happen.
But then you look at the Gallas incident, the spat between Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Adebayor and the non-performance against Manchester United in the FA Cup – it is a worry for Arsenal.
Verdict: 1-1

while of course the 3 points is vital, I still think we need a good performance. we have not really had a great performance for many weeks and if we cannot regain some form we have no chance of winning the league. a great performance is what we need to kick start a relentless run in and a shot in the arm for Tuesday night as well.
the players will want to react to everything that happened last saturday and we have had a weeks rest so there is no reason why we should not see a good performance.

The Riddler.
Mark Lawrenson along with many so called pundits( they demean the profession) are biased against us and when they talked about Liverpool or against their betters they talk thru their arsenals. So ignore.
We have enough to beat Villa comfortably this week end if the guys focus on teh task at hand and with all these AHs writing us off their motivation could not be stronger.

I stopped dwelling on the Arsene thing, while many members of the media just won’t stop. But Arsene’s ATVO interview is pure class, and I thought it’s worthsharing with you guys (I guess those of you who have ATV might see it on TV too):
On Eduardo’s recovery and whether suggestions of him spending less than the estimated 9 months on the sidelines would be possible,
A: “He’s a brave boy, very hard-working boy. A sensational attitude, so that’s good. That gives you a lot of hope that he can come back earlier (than 9 months from now).”
Q: Immediately after the game, you said something about Martin Taylor. You took those back. What made you rethink?”
A: “Because at the end of the day, I don’t know what was behind a tackle like that. And I don’t want to make him the guy who everybody’s after because I don’t know him well enough. And at the end of the day as well, I thought anyway I cannot change anything about it now. And we do not want to be seen as a club of hate. We want to be seen as a club with a positive attitude. And so that’s why I thought the best is to take care as much as we can of Eduardo. Only Martin Taylor knows what he’s done, and why he’s tackled like that. And at the end of the day, it’s his problem, he will have to live with that.”
Q: “One of the other issues thrown up about the game was about William Gallas in the last few minutes. Have you spoken with him?”
A: “Yes of course, it’s destined to… I feel he’s a highly committed guy, who’s there to win games. And he was upset with… the incident. Of course it’s always better if you keep in control. But he wanted just… he’s so committed, William, that he just got over. It was too much on that day for him.
Q: “Of course you’re still 3 points clear. But you’ve lost a big player and 2 big points. Will you try to address those problems?”
A: “Well, overall, I believe it’s better you’re 3 points ahead than 3 points behind. (Smile) 3 weeks ago, we were behind, you know? And it’s just an incident, and I believe we deserved to win this game. And that’s the most important. We went 1-0 down, we came back to win 2-1; and it was a very very controversial penalty allowed in the last minute. And er, but we cannot master that. What we can master is our attitude, our calm, our commitment, our focus. We want to influence what makes us win. I believe we will do it. And I believe that the next Villa game will show that.”
Other bits and pieces about not rushing RvP back, having Diaby back, you know already. Song is about “2 weeks” away, after picking up an injury of knee ligament from ACN. Arsene even said with a “well, what can we do?” smile that we’re still without the ACN players long after the tournament.
For players who’ll be back for Milan, it’s Eboue (cos it’s just domestic suspension) and maybe Kolo.
Hope you, like me, enjoy this dose of positive thinking ahead of the weekend.

I think people forget that we are 3 points clear. that is a good gap. if we win tomorrow it puts the problems behind us and suddenly the gap looks healthy again even though its probably still 3 points. we are 3 points ahead AND the underdogs. there is actually very little pressure on us. everyone is saying man u will it. the pressure is on them. that suits us.
chances are we will have to go to OT and get a draw at least. we either need them to have a little bad run or for us to go there and draw.
chelsea will still have a big say in the race because both of us have to go to SB. if chelsea can beat man u but we can get a draw there then that gives us an advantage too. There is still a lot of football to be played in this title race yet. nothing is anywhere near being decided.
while I dont want to lose on Tuesday, its possible that if we do get past Milan, our focus will be taken slightly away from the premier league. anything that reduces our chances of winning that is not good. clearly we should try to win every game but if we do lose I will try and take it philosophically, in so far as we can use it to our advantage.
we need to hope that the CL draw is unkind to Man U, assuming they get through.

No problems lad, enjoy your comments.
gazzap concur, thats my way of thinking. Its better to have the points on the board than chase after them. There’s still many a twist before the end of this season and we are much better than last. I know your feelings on Eboue but it would be good if he can show similar performance to the last game he played, because along with Teo I just feel the two may have turned the corner. The upsets of last weekend overshadow the young lads performance and now he knows where it is hopefully he can find it again. AV will be no push over but I still like the fact that we are playing at home. I feel invigorated knowing that the major two, (excepting of course Pool and Everton are still there with an outside chance) could be cup tied and that may even extend both those teams especially as there appears be be an upset going on at Chelsea. We could be just right with players returning and having rested know that in some cases they only have ten or less EPL games to play. A win this weekend could be just what the doctor ordered. (Fingers crossed)

Have any of you read Taylor’s comments to the press yesterday? Not one word of apology. He just said that he didn’t mean it and that it was an accident.
So let’s get this straight: he commits a reckless, irresponsible tackle (foregoing the concept of “duty of care”) that is potentially career-destroying, causes untold hurt to the player and his family. He destroys the hopes of an entire nation for their national team’s fortunes in Europe’s most prestigious int’l football tournament…
and is incapable of simply saying “I’m sorry.”
Ben Thatcher: “Sorry, Pedro, didn’t mean it, it wasn accident.”
Stephen Hunt: “Sorry about that, Petr, almost causing you fatal brain damage and all, it was an accident.”
Drunk driver: “oh, so sorry, Ma’am, didn’t mean to put your kids in the hospital like that.”
It just beggars belief.

Marcus and Gazzap, I agree with you. But I understand where the doubters are coming from. They think we’re more likely to drop points because our players are less experienced and bench not as deep as ManU/Chelsea. To them it seems we’d need a bigger buffer than 3 points to win the title, because ManU are just not capable of dropping points.
That’s what THEY think. Let them. I’d rather think we have all ingredients in place (quality, character, team spirit, now even a bit of siege mentality, slightly better league fixtures than ManU in the remaining games, especially towards the end). The only issue we have is injuries. That’s the only thing that makes me worried. We’ll see how Rosicky and RvP come back. They’ll be vital in our challenge for the title.

Yes I know Sam Kanu through work but I never knew he played for Arsenal! very nice bloke. when I first heard about the attack I was shocked to hear the story. he tried to stop a robber from robbing the local food store on Tooley street but the bloke just completely mashed him up with no mercy – I think 3.5 years is lenient considering he will prob be out in 2. its a wonder he is still alive. I only found out later that he played for Arsenal with Cole. Great to see that Cesc and Sendy took time out of their days to visit him.
If it hadn’t been for his knee injury he would probably still be playing pro football now, if not at Arsenal then somewhere else. Then he wouldn’t have been at that store in Tooley street late at night. why do some people have such bad luck in life while other nasty people seem to get away with things all their life?

Thanks for Walcott’s agent clarification Old Timer, I’m sure his dad wants him to score a few of those
I think two games from now, AV & Milan and we will have most of our injured players back. That will be a great boost and a hell of a lot more tactical options for Wenger to chose from which will be so great for the final run-in. If this happens, and we don’t lose any more players….I would be very optimistic we will win the title this season.

Just when I thought the media couldn’t sink any lower, Daily Mail have continued their let’s-throw-stones-at-Arsenal campaign with a list of red card in Arsene’s reign. I wonder if they realised we were terribly fouled, not the one who actually fouled? Pathetic.
Guys, don’t buy their paper. I even regret reading it online for free. They don’t deserve any addition to their internet pageview count.

On today’s Arsenal.com website:
“We are the team in the last three years that has committed less fouls than any other team, and the numbers are available. We are the team that has been fouled more than any other team and the team that has been punished more than any other team.” — Arsene Wenger
http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=488242&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Wenger+-+My+players+need+more+protection

I’m impressed that Arsene would speak to the hacks after the week of crap he’s had to put up with from them. He certainly left them speechless when he wouldn’t bite at their attempts to make him responsible for Martin Taylor’s ‘distress’ or the death threats he has received.

I will say it again the Media hate us because we raise above the rest with the beautiful way we play our football.
I don’t understand what they want? They want us to kick some players, break some legs, and engage in a boxing match instead of a football game?
I always explain to my American friends, that the beauty of football is trying to control the ball with your legs & head only which is much more difficult than trying to control it with your hands like American football.
If they want to watch a game of people kicking each other, they can watch a bloody kick boxing game (No ball involved).
Football is about out-smarting your opponents not about kicking them to death.

Marcus, that’s EXACTLY what I asked for in the comment posted after reading that Daily Mail list. I asked them for a comparison against other teams’ records in the same period since Sep 1996. There’s no way we were worse than the likes of Bolton, Blackburn, etc. over the past 12 years. But then they haven’t always been in the top flight. But I don’t care either.
They chose to dig up the Arsenal-only record of the past 12 years, while Arsene was talking about the past 3, Arsenal compared to ALL teams. Anyway. I’ll see whether my comment gets posted after moderation.
What’s even more amazing was that Daily Mail said Arsene “responded” to their list by highlighting Arsenal’s record of the past 3 years. What he was responding to was just a question at the press conference today. How pathetic, the way they twist things.
What also pissed me off watching Arsene’s press conference was that a journo asked “Taylor received death threats. Do you think you could have been more emphatic on your retraction of post-match comments about him?” For God’s sake it’s them journalists who chose to under-report and/or delay in their reporting of Arsene’s back-tracking! Some (lamely) said reporting’s probably slower over the weekend. Haha, and they kept churning out articles about Gallas so promptly then. Then Arsene responded with dignity, saying he went overboard and he took responsibility by retracting his comments; while those who send in death threats are “idiot” and should “take their own responsibilities” too. All fair enough. Obviously these journalists asking questions like those were trying to fan the flame even more.

It hurts me as much but Arsenal will not beat Aston Villa tomorrow… the asian handicap has said so… I have been betting for years and last night I saw what I fear the most…. Arsenal having a handicap of -3/4… this kind of odd is the curse of the team giving the habdicap because VERY SELDOM especially in EPL has the team cleared the handicap. And the disgraceful media have influenced public opinion on our plight. Even people who don’t follow football think that Arsenal are in someway the agressor now!!!!
Stupid Mancs keep referring us back to Gallas’ kick at Nani, as if the two incidents were comparable. How can a seriously broken leg equate to a little kick-out in frustration???
God I really hate the media. I’m so angry that they can actually get away with making the news as opposed to just accurately reporting it. When I think of the noise they made about Eboue’s tackle on Terry and yet now, Taylor has somehow become a vicitm. So much so that he doesn’t even feel the need to say sorry, just to blame Arsene for his death threats.
