Arsene Praises Bentley, Gallas Praises Everyone On A Quiet Sunday

With the media attention diverted by the cartoon caricature that Richard Scudamore is rapidly becoming, Arsene has been praising David Bentley ahead of tomorrow’s match

I let him go at a moment where I could have said ‘no, you stay here’ – but I was also conscious there were big players in front of him and he was not experienced enough. You have to consider is it fair to them not to let them go, even if it hurts you later

It is a small lesson in PR for Bentley who is not backwards in coming forwards when he adds his voice to the criticism of Arsene for not having enough Englishmen in his team, telling how he was not given a fair chance at the club. The small matter of Dennis Bergkamp ahead of him in the team apparently not being a persuasive argument in his eyes. This is one of the aspects of Bentley that separates him from others, an open confidence in his own abilities.

Such self-belief can be construed as arrogance but all top players have that strength of character. Some of the flak he has received has been of his own making, such as his ill-timed withdrawal from the England U-21 squad prior to a tournament. No-one should question the decision but to leave the squad in the lurch was a lesson he learned the hard way because it undoubtedly hurt his international career in the short term.

Arsene went on,

He would play here now, whether he would be a regular or not, I don’t know, but he has the quality

Therein is the question. Would he start regularly? Probably he would have given the injuries suffered this season to the midfield. I doubt it would be in the centre, most likely on the flanks rotating with Rosicky and Hleb as required. Would he have been able to displace Fabregas? Highly unlikely. Bentley is though having a good time of it at Ewood Park and may yet make the ranks of a member of the ‘Big Four’ clubs. He might well, as Arsene says, be the one that got away but in every manager’s career such players exist; Wenger has fewer than most, possibly only Diarra might fall into that category alongside Bentley from recent seasons.

William Gallas meanwhile believes he knows what has turned the team from a top four side to pushing for the title. The News Of The World quotes him as saying,

Last season we had obvious qualities but our play was less disciplined. We defenders realised straight away. As soon as opposition midfielders found themselves up against us, we were placed in immediate danger. That is never the case this year. We form a real unit that is difficult to unsettle. We are very solid, we attack and defend together. That is what makes out strength. We rely now more on team-work rather than the talent of several individuals

There are several factors that Gallas does not mention by name. The first of which is the full back areas. On both the right and left flanks, the team looks stronger. Clichy improves as he gets more experience but also by his willingness to support the attack, putting opponents on the back foot, turning their attention toward defence rather than attack. Equally, on the right Sagna does likewise but he is more solid at the back than his predecessors. It is to his credit that he settled so quickly.

In the centre, the team has been undoubtedly helped by the partnership of Gallas and Toure, their absences have been less frequent it seems this time around, an understanding is being built by the central pairing which was forming last season and now is reaching fruition.

However, the Frenchman stopped short of saying the real difference. That is having the Captain there to organise; last season, there was definitely a case of ‘too many cooks’ with no one person deemed to be the leader. It helps that Gallas has the respect of his colleagues on the pitch and that the players are prepared to listen to each other.

The feeling this season I have is that the forwards and midfielders are also making more of a barrier to opponents than they did last season. Gilberto was in good form last term, adept at reading the game but Flamini is more in the face of opponents, not letting them settle on the ball which they could perhaps in previous times. Adebayor and Eduardo are not averse to tracking back either. It is an altogether different sort of defence this season.

Finally, the blog has been nominated at the 2007 Soccerlens Awards and you can vote for it here or in any other category that you do desire in the ‘Other’ selection. Voting is open now and closes on February 17th.

‘til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. I agree it’s definitely the team work that is making the difference this season. The players all work well together as a unit and support each other on the pitch. In addition, they are a year older, wiser and more experienced.

  2. There is more of a fighting spirit this year that we lacked in the past. I credit Gallas and Kolo and Flamini for creating this spirit. The fullbacks and Flamini have made all the difference this time around, so idiots like Tim Sherwood can write his bitter one paragraph columns that sound like they would be better off on a blog than on Setana’s site.

Even sites like Harry Hotspur’s can provide more of a balanced analysis than Mr. Sherwood’s.

  3. The problem with decent players at clubs like Blackburn is that they are the only player who does anything. If we only played through Hleb he would look 10 times better. If Bentley was a bit-part player he would be poor. Hence Morten GP looking poor this season with Bentley doing all the work.

  4. Can anyone guess what will be our starting line up tomorrow give injury..it is getting difficult for me to predict..may be flamini or senderos will play inspite of injury..its serious situation as bakcburn are no pushovers…these are going to be vital points..

i hope chelsea draw today..i dont wan them to lose..as i feel we will first team to defeat them at home for long time now..

draw for manu agaist city wud be acceptable as well..

but most importantly all 3 points against blackburn

  5. I suspect Kolo and Eboue will play against B’burn, as I didn’t see them figure in the ivorian team on saturday. They could be here already.

  6. Ebuoue may be on the bench, but Kolo need to get perfectly fit, you could see against Egypt he was well below par, his trainer must have thought he wasnt ready even yesterday, so we need him to be perfectly fit in a weeks time, and then SONG will be back whos an able deputy for either Toure or FLamini, once hes back we dont need to include Gilberto even on the bench Song deserves to take his place. hes just improved beyond belief

  7. so it is that gallas is a leader of greatness on the team and dagna like a rock of solid is he also clichy fast fast pace quickly and i love the craziness and power of toure and senderos does so granite like well recent clean sheets well done

  8. Since it’s really boring here, I’d like to make a comment about Eduardo (though I agree the back 4 is the huge difference).

I just saw a comp of his first 10 goals. I’ve never seen a finisher quite like him. Someone here commented on his first EPL goal that “it seemed like he was going to shrug,” he was so calm. But he immediately did a double fist pump…very expressive for him. So he was pretty wired about it.

When he gets the ball in the box, his whole body seems to go slack. Perfectly relaxed. I mean, we use “clinical,” but this is something more; it’s almost like a trance that lasts until about a second after he scores. No wonder he’s scored almost 100 goals.

  9. totally agree with nolaboyd. Eduardo is a born goalscorer. its like his mind is wired to the goal and the concentration is absolute but at the same time he is ultra relaxed. I love Eduardo, I dont think we have seen a player quite as clinical as him for a long time at Arsenal. his finishing is not in doubt, its about what else he can bring to the team. if he can work on things he does not find so natural then he will find himself as an ever present and RVP might struggle to be an automatic choice.

Surely Toure will play if he gets back. we dont know that his mess ups the other night were down to his groin do we. he could have just been rattled – his head might be back in England thinking about Arsenal, he might simply be desperate to get back and play for us. if thats the case then I want him there tomorrow night alongside Gallas.

If not then Sendy is doing fine and perhaps Bert can do a job at the back far more so than he can do a job in midfield. thats why its imperitive that Flam shakes off his hamstring or whatever it was he got. who can play if he does not make it? Only Gilberto.
Diarra looks some player for pompey…the little sh!t.

  10. Gazzap, the problem’s that Senderos is out… Otherwise yes he’s been quite solid so far. But I don’t want a tired/unfit Kolo as it’s not good for the team and him. If Hoyte/Gilberto has to stand in, we can’t be choosers…

City were really fantastic against ManU tonight. Well done to them! Now it’s down to us to widen the gap! I’m fairly confident though we have numerous injuries – so do Blackburn.

  11. Song was injured and taken off on 16 minutes, what the H*ll is going on?

  12. G4E – he should have never started, his leg was so heavily strapped it was clear he was not fit. But he looked so disappointed when he came off, I really felt for him.

  13. I keep reading some pretty wishful thinking about Toure coming back and just getting back to work. If he does, it will because there is an absolute emergency at the back. About a week ago he noted how tired he was which is already something for a player who is so determined. Then he got this groin injury. I think there is a real risk of injury if he keeps playing and Arsene would probably prefer to give him the week off if he had any other options.

  14. Gazzap Diarrah is good BUT SONG was practically the man of the whole ANC its a pity he was injured in first 15 minutes of the final . I used to think he was ruubish now I think hes the next Vierah lets hope his injury clears up then he will be well ahead of Diably in CM

  15. There is a strong case now that the path to the title is open after couple of years in the wilderness.

MANU losing and the Chavs drawing are the best news this week end. We just need to consolidate our position by focusing on the Monday game and win despite the injuries.

  16. Howard does this mean you now think this team with Almunia, and Ade who were useless according to you can now win the title?

  17. Sol LOL cut the guy some slack – just as you did with Ade, Almunia, etc. ;)

  18. You gotta love footie fans.

One minute it’s “we’re doomed, we’re doomed” and the next “we gotta win the title”.

According to my calcs, we’re on track for a 93 point season. If United can exceed that, good luck to them, they’ll have earned the title!

  19. David Bentley would get nowhere near the team in terms of being ahead of hleb or rosicky, he’d be a squad player and that’s it, although i’d imagine he would have got a fair few games due to our injuries. To say he would have rotated with rosicky or hleb is over the top as he’s a class or two below them

  20. Solgooner,

Alex Song played well at the Africa Cup of Nations, and showed some of what he can do – when he’s given an extended run in the team & playing game after game consistently.

However, despite being named in the “Team of theTournament by the organizers (CAF), he was not practically the man of the competition, as stated.

That honour correctly went to the Egyptian player Hosny.

But Song certainly came of age in the tournament…he went out there as a relatively unknown player (in world terms) and leaves it as someone who other clubs here & abroad will be watching with interest from now on.

Good for him, and good for Arsenal.

  21. sol. I think we were too harsh on Song as well but there is an element of over hyping right now. truth is he is somewhere in between. the ANC can make players look good. I saw some of the ANC and at times the quality was laughable. I mean did you see the FINAL tonight? the goal Egypt scored was ridiculous. where was the defence? that was worse than Derby and I am not exaggerating here. Song did look good at charlton and he did look good for Cameroon but looking good next to Cesc at Old trafford at 100mph is a step up that we have not seen from the lad. give him time but dont over-hype the poor lad!

  22. Gazzap I know we are both culprits about Songs ability previously but did you see him against Ghana ? He was twice as good as Essien. He needs to play regularly which is the same problem as we had with Diarrah, but in CM I would like to see him get some chances instead of Diably or to replace Diably coming in as a sub, Seeing him play and Carlos Vela, I feel both will make a big difference in coming seasons.
Also at CB this season he has been excellent and I now feel more secure with him than I do with Senderos or Djouru

  23. da passion here is so great that when the team doesnt do well we all down beat contemplting doom but when things are up so are we at least when we down we dont show that to the team its good we give them the full support all the time.

Blackburn is going to be tense we got injuries they got suspensions but i feel we can jus nick this actually i hope we can jus nick this one it will be good to have that cushion.

i jus dont know bout rushing in either Toure or Senderos if his injured,i think a weeks rest would do them good.pple talk bout maybe playing Sagna alongside Gallas at the back but we have had situations when we could have put him there but Wenger didnt go for it um starting to think that he may not be good at that position.

i wouldnt mind seeing Hoyte in there i actually thot he did well when he slotted in for Djourou for that game we dont talk bout,Berto has another chance to star in the mid i jus dont think any of the guys with injury doubts should be risked nxt week is another big game.

  24. Casicky,

I think the reason for not playing Sagna in CB is because you’ll lose his crosses from the right, and you lose an attacking option going forward. Yes Hoyt can play in RB but he is not Sagna.

We are not completely broken, we just don’t have many options in the defensive positions in Mid field and Back line. Whoever plays, it must be played with a strong desire to make that leap and open a 5 point gap on Man Ure. It’s a difficult fixture at a difficult time, but we can do it.

    Good Luck Gunners
    G4E

  25. Gazzap you’re being a bit harsh re the Cameroon defence. If they were that bad the score would have been a lot worse. It was one defensive error by a tired, older player against a young player with fresh legs at a time when Cameroon were trying to win the game.

Whilst I agree with you that Alex Song should not be over-hyped, equally I think you shouldn’t dismiss the quality of his contribution in the tournament. The experts watching the games have no particular axe to grind yet they picked out his performances because they were outstanding and this was against Premiership quality players like Essien, Muntari etc.

  26. We now have a quality deputy for the Flamster at the DM position and his name is a SONG!

  27. “The one that got away” is right….

in hindsight Bentley going to Tottenham is every gooner’s nightmare coming true. Last season we saw how much of a booby wenger had made in letting this quality player go and now the boy who has a grudge to bear with the arsenal and something to prove has now come back reincarnated as a yiddo….. and he has a 6 year contract! A spurs supporting youngster now has his wish.. to play for the team he loves against their arch rivals…. the team that he (on the quiet) hates.

Im sure Spurs fans are rubbing their hands at the prospect of seeing Bentley this season. I know as a gooner I am a little gutted to see him signing for the scum. Bentley is cocky but also ambitious and I hate to say it but i think he will do well at the Spuds….
