No Match ‘Til Monday

The Setanta deal has certain benefits. Had Blackburn been visiting The Emirates this afternoon, it might well have been a case of ‘bring your boots, you’re playing’ such is the list of injuries at the moment. According to Arsene, the roll call is as follows:

International Duty Emmanuel Eboue
  Alex Song
Injured Johan Djourou (Groin)
  Philippe Senderos (Knee)
  Robin van Persie (Thigh)
  Abou Diaby (Calf)
  Mathieu Flamini (Hamstring)
  Manuel Almunia (Sick)
  Denilson (Hamstring)
  Tomas Rosicky (Hamstring)

And the Premier League think that adding an additional game is going to a fruitful and positive exercise. Well, their bank manager might agree but despite the platitudes of various managers, that list of players confirmed it is not. Incidentally, according to The Times, one of the reasons for the Football Association giving their tacit approval to such a laughable idea is that the EPL have promised not to schedule any ‘Super Sundays’ before England games whilst the protestations of Blatter and Platini are expected to be quelled with support for the quota idea and contributions to charity projects in the host cities. And some still believe this is a proposal that will not get off the ground.

Back to Arsenal. So bad is the list that Kolo Toure is being seriously considered for Monday’s game. Having seen his performance in the ACN semi-final, I find it hard to believe. The player was clearly unfit and not ready for a game. Little will have changed in the intervening days and adding a late night flight from Accra to London is not going to assist in recuperation. Desperate times though require desperate measures. With United expected to claim all three points against a confidence drained Manchester City, three points will be imperative to regain top spot. Ideally Liverpool will nick a point at Stamford Bridge although a goalless draw seems to be the best hope given their inability to hit the back of the net against decent opposition.

In the return of commonsense it seems that either Gilberto or Justin Hoyte will deputise for despite Philippe Senderos’ protestations, medial knee ligament damage is no laughing matter. Unless there is a seriously quick recovery by either Diaby or Flamini, it strikes me that Hoyte is likely to be drafted into the defence with Gilberto in midfield. Both could play in the centre and whilst they have obvious assets in that position, both have serious weaknesses which have to lead us to believe that Monday is going to require a win based on the philosophy of ‘you score three, we’ll get four’. Gilberto’s lack of pace is compensated by his ability to read the game whilst Hoyte has the reverse problem; he does not read the game particularly well but has pace in abundance. Of the two, I would prefer the Brazilian for his ability to read the game and better marking abilities. However, such is the inaccuracy of injury reports that emanate from the club over the years, whether by design or accident is for you to decide, that I will believe the list when kick-off comes on Monday evening.

In this era of global football, Arsenal have announced plans for an Academy in America and for an ‘Arsenal Cup’ to be developed that will be hosted at the marvellously named ‘Dick’s Sporting Goods Park’.

‘til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Well they put Håvard Nordtveit in the Champions League squad, so why not give him a go alongside Gallas

Gilberto worries me a bit, either he has lost the desire or has lost a lot of sharpness which is to be expected with not playing.

  2. one thing, is I dont want them to risk Kolo, he is not fit and risking him could cause us more problems down the line similar to rushing back Van Persie.

  3. I agree with you Yogi, the 39th game is already a fait accompli because money talks and that is really all this is about. And it won’t stop at 1 game – Arsene better buy some more players for all these extra money spinning games to come judging by the injury list.

Patthegooner you’re right, a fit though inexperienced central defender might be a better option than an unfit KT judging by his performance against Egypt, or JH out of position judging by his performance at WHL in the CC. I’d rather have a fit Kolo for Milan.

  4. The actual game of football seems an irrelevance at the moment.

I think a lot of us are delusional about the game & club we love. The truth is the real game was taken away from the traditional supporter years ago. What we have is a synthetic product of some quality but lacking any real integrity whatsoever.

We, to date, have been spared the organ music after a goal or the silly names that rugby has embraced. If we went down that route Arsenal Harlots would seem appropriate.

I know I am a dinosaur but the English League should be played in England with each team playing all the others once at home & once away. That should be sacrosanct.

The overseas supporters, specially those that grace these pages, I welcome totally. I certainly would not be opposed to meaningful competitions being played all over the world but not the League Championship of England.

In 1999 I went to Villa Park when we lost to Ryan Gigg’s wonder goal, in a game of electric passion that mattered so so much.

The very next season the FA forced Manchester United to opt out of the FA Cup to play a mickey mouse competition in Brazil. The Fa Cup was immediately & permanently devalued to a point where it is now viewed by a lot of us as insignificant.

The same thing will happen to the League. The authorities don’t care about its product’s most vital lifeblood, the cash paying public who go to the games, week in week out, creating at least some fraction of the atmospheres, we used to have. Only the fans are constant.

  5. Patthegooner, I think Gilberto has lost his sharpness, not his ability. He may also be in a bit of a funk psychologically, which would be understandable. I really hope he doesn’t play in central defense. The man has said he doesn’t like it, but more than that, his genius is in his ability to channel attacks away from where they can do damage, not make last-ditch tackles and all those things one expects from a central defender. Anyhow, I hope he plays…and scores two goals on Monday (not saying it is probably). It would be good for him and good for Arsenal.

  6. Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, however awkward it does sound, is the home of the Colorado Rapids, owned by (drum roll, please) Stan Kroenke.

It seems that Stan the Man is taking advantage of his Arsenal connections to make his football operations better. I fully expect Wenger style training methods and development to be fully implemented in Denver. Who knows, maybe in about ten years, if this continues, MLS will be dominated by a Wengerball playing Rapids.

  7. I live in Denver and Dick’s, while named quite poorly, is a fantastic facility and one of the best of its kind in the US. I would much rather see the Rapids travel to train with Arsenal in the off season as I doubt Wenger would ever travel here. And if the Gunners played an exhibition match here that would be incredible.
Right now all I want is a win on Monday and these injuries to be overblown a bit.

  8. I agree Pat – Nordviet would be nice, but i dont think Arsene will do that – much more likely that Hoyte or Gilberto will play there, depending on Flamini’s fitness.

Hopefully we wont have to risk Kolo – i am not sure he has recovered from whatever it was he smoked before the Egypt game. :-)

  9. Its sad that we always have so many players getting injured during internationals. I hope it won’t endanger our title push. We don’t seem to learn how? Arsenal was winning titles and cups with a combination of foreign players and English players. Now our whole regular XI is foreign.

During internationals, they all troop out and come back injured or jet-weary a la Gilberto and yet we continue to fill the team with foreign players mostly French at the expense of equally good English players.

I’m happy Blatter is working to put this issue upfront as it will save the Arsenal in the long run. Arsenal was stronger with English key players; but for the past 3-4 years we’ve been weak due to lack of English players.

  10. Howard, that’s the most insane non-sequitir I’ve ever seen you post here (a high bar to clear). What on earth do English players have to do with international injuries? Do you think they get injured on the plane? And how far away do you think France is?

If you want to rant about the lack of English players, I won’t dissuade you from your hobby. But please don’t try to cloak such whining in this lame attempt at rationality. It’s embarrassing.

  11. Howard what is it with you and English players. Surely you can see by the players who play for England that they are no way as good as the players we have at Arsenal. Their idea is two passes and a hoof upfield. That is not what I want to see at Arsenal.

  12. Howard

Gilberto? Jet Lagged? From Dublin????? The only time he has suffered recently is the Copa America in the Summer because Brazil play a large portion of their friendlies in Europe.

Injuries at international level happen whatever nationality the individual is. English is not a pre-requisite for staying fit, indeed quite the opposite if you look at recent seasons with the number of England players who return to their clubs with knee-knack and the like.

We have not been weak due to a lack of English players; we have suffered prior to now because of an inadequate squad. Frankly, I look at the England squad and I would only be happy with three of them at Arsenal. The rest are simply not good enough to play for us which is one of the reasons for the national teams failure to qualify for Euro2008.

    YW

  13. P.S. 2004 Unbeaten with few English players.

  14. YW

‘I look at England squad and I would only be happy with three of them at Arsenal’

Then why haven’t we won anything ever since with our foreign-filled team but clubs with English players winning something?

I don’t like Arsenal XI to be all foreign. To me its bad for the Arsenal and I always pray that Arsene should have some change of heart and bring in some good English players.

If you take out Kolo, Hleb, Cesc, Rosicky, Clichy, Sagna and now Ade (improved) and Flamini, the rest are all replaceable; not with any exceptional skills as some of you always preach.

Let’s go to Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, France or even Africa and check if there is a top club whose regular XI is all foreign players? Its not done anywhere in the world of football.

Meanwhile you people want this to be the norm in North London.

Eventually Blatter will force Arsene to do the right thing and improve the image of the Arsenal and help us achieve more glories like the days when we had both foreign and English players in the regualar XI.

The image of the Arsenal due to its global brand should a combination of English and foreign but foreign XI based in London.

  15. Steve

2004 unbeaten with few English players but there were English players though. Right?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against foreign players but equally what we have now is not right.

Name a top team in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas that play week in week out with complete foreign players? Give me an example and let me support your case.

  16. A top team in Europe is Arsenal. Africa, Asia and America do not have leagues with the same amount of money to compete for the top players that is why most of their top players play in Europe. Also name one good English player who plays in Europe.

  17. Howard as usual you are talking crap. Almunia is fine in goal which british GK would you get to replace him. Song is on of the stars of the ANC, Gallas has been a great captain and is one of best CBs in the world. Our UK players Walcott and Hoyte are the average ones, and Wright and Jeffers were expensive disasters.

  18. I would like to see more English Players, but I think Arsene is doing something about it. You only have to look at the volume of home grown talent in the youth setup to see that.

The problem with English players is firstly to buy them means vastly inflated prices (D.Bent, S W Phillips ETC) and they also have a habit of coming with baggage. Take a look at the last few that left us, Cashley, Bentley and Pennant not to mention the lazy Jeffers. Too much Playstation and Pils.

Player wise In England, I would only look at Terry, Gerrard, Richards and Joe Cole and they have all been on the front page for the wrong reasons in the past. And I think that coupled with the inflated prices is why Arsene is now getting them at a younger age (Bartley and Walcott ETC) and developing them in the right way on and off the field and in my mind having level headed foreigners in the Squad will help that.

So sure I would love more English Players, but short term (1-2 Years) there is no current solution.

  19. As long as they are in the team on merit and not because of their passport

  20. As I wrote back on 1/27/08 that the New York Giants would beat the New England Patriots. Just as I said Tom Brady could not set and throw on that bad ankle. Because in game situations only happens on game day. In practice you are told not to hit the quarterback. But it was like the Offensive line could not stop the Giants pass rush. I think that was the main factor in the game for the Giants. Does anyone think anything different?

  21. Howard,

Who said we want this to be the norm in the club, we have English players with the potential to be better than any of the current established English players.

I can’t wait for someone like Gibbs playing, which is not far. I have no doubt Walcott any time soon can explode…just needs some confidence. There is a few more maybe still 3 years away from 1st team.

You always seem to miss the strategy of the club going into a new era with a new stadium with no big resources ($$$.$$). Were you willing to give Wenger 30 Million to buy a Frank Lame-pard?

The club is doing fine, because We can see the plan….We can see the future…..We can see the young English players coming, and we can see the first team challenging for the title.
    —-

The Hamstring injuries are 37.5%, more than a third of all injuries and can raise up to 43% if we excluded Almunia (Sick). Should we worry about this?
    —-

Gilberto, used to play very heated and fired-up games against B’Burn…but I don’t think he will be up for any further fights. If he’s selected, he probably will just do his job as any professional…nothing more. Not so encouraging to feel this way but you can’t blame him, he knows he’s going. He was one of the Invincibles and that’s a great testament to his contribution.

In a game like this, with this long list of injuries, I would play Gibbs if he’s fit in front of Clichy. He played as left back before, he and Clichy can overlap well or at least he can cover Clichy’s runs.

There you go Howard, an English man on the field…maybe two?

I personally hope it’s a victory day for >>Arsenal<< with or without English players.

    G4E

  22. G43

Yes, he can try Gibbs but he’s off on loan as Randall. They might end up being sold. However, if anything Arsene will bring another young foreigner, Traore.

Its sickening at times when these young players are not any special but it just that they get chances to improve.

  23. randy212 is that sarcasm? If not, you might as well be speaking Martian for all it means to me!

G4E, don’t waste your time, Howard will only see what he wants to see. And Howard if you are so ’sickened’ by all the foreigners in the Arsenal first team, you could always do one, since we don’t need your kind. You either support all the players in the squad regardless of where they come from or you don’t support Arsenal at all.

  24. Passenal: I could not agree more. Howard has been moaning about Almunia and others but then eaten humble pie. Now it is the little englander stance. It is sickening to hear this, “The Sun”, attitude from an Arsenal supporter. Try NUFC Howard they seem your type of fan or support a La Liga team.

  25. stop moaning Howard, you get support from all over the world because you have their best players. And English players aren’t worth the money, see Mr Bent at tottenham and record prices for Rio Ferdinand and his equals. You can get players just as good or better for far less if you get them young, fullstop.

  26. It’s a shame that Arsenal are focusing on Denver — nothing wrong with the city or people who live there, but it is definitely a second-tier city and media market, and really a come-down for Arsenal. Further, it is probably the one major city in North America whose altitude radically changes how any sport is played. Chicago, New York, LA, the Bay Area — that’s where Arsenal should put down roots. I hope Stan is either paying big bucks or promising not to sell to the Russian in return for this incredible gift that neither he nor his market deserves.

  27. Of those on that injury list, if I’m remembering rightly, only Senderos got his injuries on international duty.

Stuff happens. You can’t keep half a dozen quality central defenders on the payroll “just in case”.

Just be thankful we don’t have to rely on those fine Englishmen Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate. So immune to injury they’re practically superhuman. :)

  28. Flamini and Diaby were injured on International duty.
Playing for a B French team. How daft is that Domenech. Why play a friendly B team when the A team can change 6 players. What B**llocks

  29. Correction: Diaby was already injured.

  30. Speaking of injuries, it seems that Song had a knock in the semi final which ruled him out of the last training session with the team.

Their coach has said that he will play anyway, which is very weird!

The fact that he is forced to play him shows his importance for the Cameroon team this year. He has been exceptional with them in this campaign, and is probably the main reason they are in the final!

And at 20 yrs old, we have a real gem in our hands!

    Wenger knows!
