Newcastle arrive at The Emirates today for the resumption of the FA Cup. The squad will no doubt be rotated again with a number of the starting line-up from White Hart Lane relegated to the bench and vice versa. The resources which were stretched with injury and absentees may find themselves pushed for longer with the news of Kolo Toure’s injury in Ghana. Initial reports are always prone to make the situation seem worse than it actually is but the prognosis from Gerard Gili, the Ivory Coast’s Head Coach is not promising,
I’m concerned about him because he has injured his groin. I don’t know how long he’ll be out
If that is the case, one would hope that the player will be allowed to return to Arsenal for treatment. That is not a condemnation of medical facilities, more an observation that a national Coach is more likely to take unnecessary risks with a player in a tournament without a second thought for any responsibilities that he has to the players club.
Depending on the outcome of Toure’s scans, Arsene may well change his views on signing anyone in the transfer window although if the walking wounded return without complications, there is no reason to dip into the kitty. The dilemma the manager faces is that the window closes before he will be certain of the return of the injured players and for someone who has publicly put great faith in his young players, to me at least, it seems unlikely that he will sign anyone of substance.
Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner’s sideshow appears to be rolling out of town with reports that they have kissed and made up but that seems more based on the fact that neither of them beat ten bells of you know what out of the other at training yesterday. Arsene believes that in the long run the incident will boost unity and in a perverse way he is probably right, with any animosities out in the open and hopefully resolved.
Back to this afternoon; Philippe Senderos and Gael Clichy will return for Hoyte and Traore but I would expect Arsene to play Lehmann in goal rather than Almunia, as he did at Burnley. Midfield is perhaps the biggest quandary. Whilst Alex Hleb is the ‘form’ player at the moment, Arsene has already stated his primary targets this season are the Premier and Champions Leagues which makes it unlikely that the Belorussian will start today. More likely would be Walcott reverting to the right with Diaby remaining on the left. In the centre, Fabregas will probably return given Denilson’s injury and be partnered by Gilberto, giving Flamini a complete rest ahead of Tuesday’s fixture against the same opponents. Whilst I can appreciate the rationale, I would personally put Rosicky on the right and Flamini in the centre to field the strongest side. One of the disadvantages with matches being scheduled on a Tuesday for midweek domestic home fixtures is the lack of recovery time from the previous Saturday. The forward line will no doubt be Eduardo and Adebayor with Bendtner on the bench, which would leave a team of
Lehmann; Sagna, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy; Walcott, Fabregas, Gilberto, Diaby; Eduardo, Adebayor
With the bench being
Fabianski, Hoyte, Hleb, Bendtner, Randall
Cup ties are notoriously difficult to predict but Newcastle seem to be ready to field a strong team so expect a tougher match than the Carling Cup tie earlier this season. Enjoy the game wherever you are watching it. ‘til Tomorrow.

I think he’ll rotate a fair bit for this one. I’d be surprised to see Gallas, Hleb or Fabregas all of whom had long stints on Tuesday.
Lehmann; Sagna, Senderos, Gilberto, Clichy; Randall Flamini, Diaby. Rosicky; Eduardo, Bendtner

I think we need the win for confidence. I hope we go for our strongest, fittest team. We certainly don’t want a draw because the replays with Bolton & Blackburn took a lot out of the team, causing damage in PL & CL.
Newcastle didn’t play in the week but playing us at our best is tiring, so I don’t see the need to save players for the PL game, unless there are fitness issues.

i am totally gutted with our performance against lesser sides..i feared that at start of season and even now..we lost points against boro..city and newcastle..else there wud be so much positivity around..
also diarrah walkingout..rvp injured..theo in no form..african cup..guys fighting..i am feeling restless..
we are looking so thin at the moment..really outside automatic 11 no one is inspiring nay confidence..we need to quickly get at comfort level that existed at the start of the season..performance wise and personnel wise..else we cud see things quickly evaporate..remember milan is waiting and manutd do not look like giving away much..chelsea seem to be sticking around also..
guys have sense..concentrate..else all the pre season gloom will return…come one lift ur selfs

I to hope we put out our best strongest team, we need to win this match. We can take players off during the game to rest them but most important is to rekindle our confidence, which must be down at the moment. This game has me really worried.

adc: you are right. the problem is that the good squad players we had have lost form and are not helping out. from last years performances i thought diaby would be pushing for a first team place (but he has been awful lately, albeit on the left). i thought denilson, traore and theo were very promising last year in the league cup but they have not developed very much. bendtner is good but sporadic. gilberto has lost lost it. diarra has left. from having a very healthy squad 2 months ago we are now very thin. as you say i do not have confidence in the players coming in other than our first xi.

It’s interesting that a lot of fans are currently questioning Theo’s talent, but I’ve lost count of the number of teams who want to take him on loan this season. Clearly they see what Wenger sees and a lot of others seem to be missing.
drgooner you’re right, some of our squad players are not on form at the moment, but we know they have the quality so that form will return. It’s not that they lack anything other than experience and consistency, which comes with playing time.

My feelings towards the game are that we will win it or lose it in central midfield. On that thought I would say Gilberto cannot start. When he plays we lose the ball too often in midfield. With Flamini’s natural energy I would be surprised if he needs much of a rest. I would play him, I think he inspires the side and allows those more creative around him to play. I would either partner him with Cesq or give Rosicky his chance in the centre. Giving a team of:
Lehmann, Hoyte, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy, Randall, Flamini, Cesq/Rosicky, Diaby, Eduardo, Ade.
Subs from:
Traore, Gilberto, Walcott, Bendtner, Manonne
Giving Sagna an important rest (for the first time this season it seems!) and Hleb a break before Tues nite, at the moment he’s the player we can least afford to lose.

The players am worried about are traore and gilberto. We cant blame diaby for his shockingly inept performances considering he’s been played out of position and doesnt seen interested in playing on the wing re: diaby blame wenger. Now regarding traore he’ been dissapointing at the left back position where he’s been unsolid and it’s his natural position, he’s defending is poor, he gets turned too easily for my liking and just because he’s 18 and strong doesnt mean he would cut the mustard. Gilberto cynical plőy has been uncovered. ever since gallas was offered the captaincy, he’s been ampling and trotting around like a lost soul in the engine room of the team, neither going backward nor forward. Have u noticed how the game runs by him in midfield this is his way of venting his fury at arsene for ignoring him or how else can you xplain last seasons performance with this season’s ?

Im in for the strongest squad as well with one aside, Id prefer to see Diaby sit a spell out of the squad untill he ups his game. For me he has been by far the biggest dissapointment this season, I hope he gets back int he groove. I have faith in Theo and see great improvement from last year, he still has a long way to go but at 18 has time to come good.

am sorry if i am sounding totally frustrated..but one thing i have observed with arsenal is we hardly ever have serenity and stability in our dressing room..
earlier it used to be viera..then cashley..reyes..henry..has anyone served us without giving us misery..out of top clubs i think only arsenal is one every one takes for ride..when we thought the solution is to get rid of big ego..we get likes of adebayor etc who briefly become superstar and get themselves wrecked in brain..i like ade..dont get me wrong there…but what i want to see is certain discipline..for a moment i want arsene to be bit nastier than he is..i want him to have anger over his players which he seldom has..like ferguson..i want him to make suffer likes of diarra to give others a example that not to mess with club..we have too many occassion when club has been hold ransom to likes of cashley reyes and diarra..it spoils all the planning..lets set an example for dressing room..and stop players from crying incaseof non selection..only then can we have healthy 22 players of good quality..which will make our squad stronger

rumor has it we got striker/winger Yoan Gouffran
hes a great score if its true .. Another Potential player with an unknown starting date ,as in we don’t know when he will come good for the club but a striker-winger is a good start …Another French connection player, but at least its a worthy one .
He is quality …
I’m quietly confident about tonights game !

Panic over, Kolo is fit to play in Tuesday’s game, so no worries about a long term layoff
I think that Gouffran story is still speculation. the only reference I can find is a translated page from Eurosport.

i fully agree with ADC comments regarding wenger not being ruthless enough with certain individuals its a long list anelka, cole, henry, reyes, vieira, diarra, talking out of turn whenever they feel the need to.
ferguson would not put up with it, united comes first as far as he’s concerned diarra should have been made to stay until at least the end of the season
not when he feels like going.
wenger although a great manager is far to lenient when it comes to these matters.. and it transmitts itself to certain individuals like adebayor who’s been at the club two minutes who then thinks it’s ok to go around lamping his own team mates.

GOUFFRAN APPARENTLY SIGNS FOR ARSENAL
He was expected in Paris but Yoan Gouffran could be finally crossing the Channel. And not for any English club. According to our sources, the young Caen striker has signed a pre-contract with Arsenal. No big surprise because the Gunners have been watching the U-21 international for a long time. They have taken advantage of the player who was voted best Ligue 2 player last season’s refusal to go to Paris to come back into the frame. The attraction of a contract much more substantial than the one proposed by PSG, which did not impress the young Caennais: (80 000 euro per month)….

Shango you are right!
I have read countless comments and blogs talking about Ade head butting Nik.
I have really looked for a report or comment from someone who watched the game live and saw it and I have failled to get any. I was at the game and I did not see it – not that I was looking at them at that time.
This is even more sad people taking it for a given that there was a head butt and Ade started it all when there is not even a single footage of that.
So just before we call Ade a thug etc, who actually saw it?

You have to put Ade/Bendtner in prospective if the two guys don’t like each other….then Bendtner may said that to get Ade in trouble.
From another point of view, it could also be the Spuds fans who created the head-butt rumor to get Arsenal players in trouble…it’s not far from the Spuds fans to do just that.
So we are still chewing on the negative, if this happened with Man Ure, their fans probably would put a lid on it and it would be forgotten.
I think we have bigger problems than a head-butt no one saw, and not one single camera has it on tape.
Get over it.

Quite Comfortable in the end
A couple more for Ade, the second of which included a NBA style block by Eduardo to give him the free run on goal. he could have had 4 or 5
I thought Newcastle had their chances though, especially in the first half, so maybe 3-0 flattered us a bit
I think we just grew in confidence as the game went on. although on the wing Diaby seemed to play infield a little more and this gave Clichy loads of room down the LW and he had a great game. Flamini and Cesc are getting back to their passing best, Senderos was solid enough and confidence is definately growing there
all in all a good team performance and an important one after Tuesday.

I think Walcott did better by maybe a full %1 than last game, he was getting better at the last moments before going off.
Ade had a couple of chances he should have scored, but he still proved to be our main striker/goal scorer.
That block from Eduardo for Ade’s second was awesome….Pat got it right, it’s an NBA block
Not a bad performance considering the last game’s effect on confidence.
I hope we do the same in the all important next EPL game.
Long live the Gunners.

That was the best we have played for a short while. It was undoubtedly aided by the return of King Kev, who seemed to set his side up with intention of seeing an entertaining game. Some will see that as tactically naive, I’m afraid I’m one of them.
The Ade doubters will of course continue, but that was a great display from him today. His energy was boundless and his runs almost unplayable. If he can manuaveure himself into top gear come the Milan game, they’ll find themselves breathing out their @rses. I can’t see how they will have faced much like Ade before. They may be in for quite a shock.
Flamini put in another all action hero of a display. He is completely fearless and must be unbelievably fit. In fact, an element of our play today was the running the lads put in. It helps when a team doesn’t just park the bus, but we have seemed to be cruising through games a little too much of late. Signs of Fab coming back into form, his passing and work-rate more like the player we know. If he alongside this midfield can find their way back into the goals, the early season form will be back, right on time.
Diaby was helped by the open space, but he showed much more of what he can give the side. I’m happy to see the lad play.

Alex Song is really playing well for Cameroon in midfield, maybe he should be Gilberto’s replacement in midfield next season, rather than being played at CB. He could of course still play there in case of injury/suspension.

I don’t think the scoreline flattered us at all. First half we were understandably a bit cagey and Newcastle had their moments but second half it was all us and Newcastle didn’t get a look in.
Great to see Ade is still on fire – more of the same on Tuesday please.

didn’t diarra score for pompey today? I would hate to see him turn into a world class player that we all knew he could be.
the bad news today is the 2 injuries to Toure and Rosicky. Even if Ros is out for 2 weeks it could be a blow and Toure could be out for 6 weeks if its serious. that would really knock us badly.
was pleased with the game today. newcastle were never really in it. arsenal just started slowly and clearly had an eye on keeping a bit in reserve for Tuesday. I think we were in control and were always likely to step it up to which Newcastle had no answer. I think we can do even better on Tuesday.

Gazzap, Newcastle WAS in it in the 1st half. I just had audio commentary but it did sound they were very lively and we were a bit shaky at the back at times. But for the 2nd half, I had web TV and it looked like a different story.
By: Lou on January 26, 2008

I think newcastle had one chance which Owen missed across the face of goal. everything was just huff and puff with no real substance. not saying we played well first half but I did not think newcastle were all that and they reckon thats the best they can do!
media people love to say how the big teams are on the ropes but teams like us, chelsea and man u always come through patches like that and show what we are all about in the end (most of the time!). either way, I was not worried at half time.

Phew!!! what a relief. We needed to win this to get our confidence back. I am glad AW played Theo and Hoyte plus Cesc and Diaby. They needed to get their confidence back. All played well and Gallas finally marshalled the defence well too. Clichy deserved a special mention other than the goal line clearance as he and Flamini covered acres and acres of grass tirelessly.
Diaby when he came into the center to allow Clichy room was very good. Ade today played more for the team and with just enough selfishness and confidence to blast in two.
Like some said Cesc form is now returning and thsi can only be good for us.
Hoyte and Senderos when about their business in a calm professional manner and was steady through out.
Theo had enough aggression today, not his best but much improved from the Spud game. He needs a goal or two.
Like the Americans like to say it is all good today as we did not implode as most vultures in the form of pundits and TV commentators had put us to the sword before the game. I thought to myself what a load of rubbish. They were hyping up King Kev’s return and our impending implosion ala last season.
We will out play King Kev’s team every day of the week including Sundays.
I have been hearing ESPN’s Asian team with Sky sport collusion and their punditry if you can call it that is biased to the extreme and not one of them is an Arsenal fan I bet.
Never mind them.

So Ade, Theo, Diaby, Cesc, Gallas and Hoyte have had this chance to (half-)redeem themselves. I feel confident about the mid-week league game.
And so the Ade hater(s) won’t show up anytime soon I guess.

Well said Lou. The one thing you need to support a football team is faith. Just running off at the mouth (before engaging your brain) at every poor performance does not help. A good striker is always selfish but Ade is also working very hard defending at times.

I would be very sad for Rosicky if he is going to be out again, he seemed very frustrated. I just hope he came out as precaution and nothing else.

Cesc – Flamini, what a pair! We all new Cesc was just absolutely Fabregas….but Flamini is just running like a fine tuned engine.
Again, people doubted Wenger for Flamini but Le Boss always kept faith in him, and look how he pairs nicely with Mr. Fabulous 4.
As for Clichey, patience paid well son, compare that to Cashley Cole in the Sun (What a sc*m).
Adebayoooorr……Adebayoooorr…..Give him the ball,… and he will scorrrre.
Should’ve have been a Hat-rick today..but I’m sure he will be happy to ad(e) two.
