Left Back Heaven, Arsene And Gallas Heap The Praise

The one position that Arsene has never really had problems with is left back. Inheriting Nigel Winterburn was a good start and since then Silvinho, Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy have all been consistent regulars. Add to that the competence shown by the deputies – William Gallas, Lauren and Mathieu Flamini – and the potential of Armand Traore, that consistency is undiminished. Yes, they have bad days but over the course of their spells in the position they have formed an admirable barrier to opponents on that wing. Of all of them though, Clichy has the potential to be the best, the most complete player.

Defensively he still has a bit to learn but such is his recovery speed that he is able to make up for positional deficiencies quickly. This season though, he has added improved support for the midfield to his armoury. Indeed, the only thing he has yet to bring to his game is chipping in with four or five goals a season. If he does that, he will probably be hailed as the best left back in the business.

Arsene was understandably pleased with the Fulham performance, highlighting the performance of the midfield,

Rosicky is more of a Pires-type and Hleb is more for me a guy who attracts people to the ball, and then slides it through. Alex looks like he always slows the game down to speed it up again. He is more of a dribbler and a passer, whereas Tomas is more of the guy who is in the flow of the game, a little bit similar to Pires.

High praise indeed and it seems that Hleb is at long last getting the universal recognition that his performances deserve. The skill has always been there and appreciated within the ground but television does not allow you to see the work that he puts in. This season, he has added goals although his return has dropped in recent months. Indicative of the consistency of his performances is the speculation linking him with an improbable move to Barcelona; the better they play, the more they are coveted.

William Gallas spoke of the inspiration that the younger players give,

Everyone wants to win at least one trophy this season and all the young players are very focused about what they have to do. We know Manchester United are strong, and we know Chelsea are not far behind so it will be difficult for Arsenal to be champions. But everyday when I go into training I love to see them play, because they are all so young and enthusiastic. I enjoy talking to them and advising them when something is wrong. I want them to enjoy every game and I want them to be champions at the end of the season because it is good to be champions when you are young

You cannot argue with that and one has to commend Gallas on his captaincy which has seen a transformation in him. It probably helps that compared to last season he is relatively fit, only missing one spell through injury.

Ahead of the Tottenham game, Arsene has noted that the squad is a bit thin with the current injuries and absentees – Toure and Eboue have their opening ACN fixture this afternoon – which will mean some of those on show on Saturday will be playing,

The players who were on the bench will play, but I will have to play one or two who played against because we are short in numbers

I suppose that either or both of Gallas and Senderos will be turning out whilst up front Eduardo or Walcott will partner Bendtner. To be honest, I would prefer Eduardo due to current form with Walcott on the right and Diaby the left. More information later today, I suspect.

‘til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. he does not have to use anyone twice. he has gibbs and Randall waiting and they are better wingers than Diaby and Walcott who should be allowed to play in their strongest positions of attacking midfielder and striker.
perhaps Sagna at RB is a good idea with Hoyte in the middle, because it worked so well last time. I would hate to see Gallas injured at Spurs – it would be just typical. We have Gilberto who can play at the back as well.
the midfield will be key tomorrow. If it is Bert and Denilson be prepared for a difficult match (and defeat).

  2. I noticed a particular absentee in the ‘left back cover’ in a certain Pascal Cygan. Also Flamini helped us reach the C.L final playing at left back.

  3. Wholeheartedly agree with the points about Clichy. Hleb takes his time with his pass (which isn’t a bad thing) and that gives others time to give him support. The interchange play Hleb and co. bring to Arsenal is brilliand. Would prefer Walcott to start through the center but all to all and that. Good post Yogi.

  4. According to the stats on the Telegraph website, Clichy is the best defender in the league, with the highest number of successful tackles, highest number of successful passes and the 2nd highest number of assists of all defenders.

He just needs to break that scoring duck!

  5. Please mr wenger “DONT PLAY GILBERTO”!!!!!

  6. I would not risk Gallas in this match. How about Gilberto and Hoyte with Sagna on the right. We are very thin on CBs and if Gallas gets injured it has to be now so that we have time to buy some one. How about the lad Harvarth( I hope I get the spelling right) why not try him. and Gilberto. I would not even risk Sagna for this if I can help it. We have not respected this cup for a good reason, winning does nothing for us except an empty boast.

I am full agreement on Clichy. On hind sight and strictly that Cashley Cole leaving was a blessing in disguise although then I was sick to the stomach losing him to Chel$ki.

    Up the Arse!!!!

  7. does anyone seriously think our reserves can beat the chelsea first team in the final? I dont. I mean in football of course you can never rule anything out but wenger has already said he wont make the same mistake as last year and use the first teamers in the final. chelsea’s first team, with Drogba and other Africans back, will poop all over us in reality.
so why risk losing again, AND having to postpone the Brum away game thus giving us a fixture pile up all for a win tomorrow?
basically I am saying, we should play our kids and not worry about the result. we should definitely not risk injuring Gallas and others to get to a final we probably wont win.
If we beat spuds then all well and good, at least its a day out at Wembley, if not then we have bigger fish to fry.

  8. Gazzap, it was universally recognised that we outplayed them last year, so why not?

After Arsene’s comments last week, it would suprise me to see Theo start up front, and maybe 1 of Hleb or Rosicky come in.

or maybe Arsene will take a punt on Gibbs or Randall?

Probably Hleb as he is a little less injury prone!!!

We are in a no lose situation tomorrow, so i for one will be enjoying my night out at the shit hole.

    My team would be –

    Fabianski

    Hoyte Gallas Senderos Traore

    Hleb Gilberto Denilson Diaby

    Bendtner Walcott

With a strong bench – Adebayor, Fabregas included.

Malaysian Gunner – Harvard is injured at the moment.

  9. Gazzap

I agree in essence, although I probably would not say our youngsters will not beat Chelsea because I believe they are more than capable, such is their fearlessness.

But you are quite right, why risk any big hitters, play the kids and see what happens.

This is not the trophy we are chasing.

  10. Definitely wouldn’t play Gallas Matt.

Just too risky. These mistakes have been made before, the Carling Cup is the kids tournement. If Arsenal are too win it, the kids and finge players are going to have to do it.

  11. We have always been strong at LB.

Hapgood & Lionel Smith were England internationals before my time, Dennis Evans, Bill McCullough, Peter Storey, Bob McNab, Sammy Nelson, Kenny Samson, Nutty Boy, Silvinho, Cashly & now Gail.

All decent to great players. At the moment Bill & Nutty Boy remain my favourites, although not actually the best players. That accolade probably goes to Kenny or Cashly but Nigel was close.

Clichy has time to be. If he could add some goals to his repertoire. He has already improved considerably on his attacking play. Evra is also a very good player but neither are playing for France, strange.

Sorry about that lapse into memory lane.

I don’t think AW will be tempted into playing any of our crucial players on Tuesday.

It is a game we are not really expected to win, why not play Gilberto at the back & Diaby in CM, with Randall & Gibbs wide.

Gilberto may be needed at CB, while Kolo is away, so a game there would sharpen him up.

  12. I have a feeling we’ll see Senderos/Gilberto at centre half and Randall/Barazite as wide men. Hope Denilson fights his heart out in midfield. He can do it.

  13. I just think he will play Gallas… i Might be wrong!

Ole – I doubt Barazite will play being as he fractured his shoulder about a month ago!!!

  14. come on, we lost to chelsea last year despite having several first team players on the pitch. we may have outplayed the chavs but a lot of teams ‘outplay’ them. they dont play football so much as just win games – thats what they are good at. so just because we outplayed them it doesn’t mean anything. this year without the first teamers I would not even give us much of a chance of outplaying them let alone beat them.
dont get me wrong I’d rather go to Wembley and lose than not go to Wembley at all but I am just saying if we do lose to Spuds tomorrow, its not the end of the world by any means.

Quite often when teams go out of competitions early, eg early FA cup exit they do better in other comps. I actually think had we not exited the FA cup early in the last 2 seasons, we would not have even finished fourth.

  15. Matt – Thanks for the info and spelling correction

Flint – old timers like us know these players well eh. I think Cashley had he stayed could have been so much more than the defensive drivel they play down there under Moaninho and now Grant. Has he scored since his move to Chelski? I think not. 5,000 pounds less was what it took to turn him..sad.

Now we have Gallas and space for Clichy to establish himself. He has time and I am sure eventually his crossing will be perfected( it is improving) and the goals, I am not sure they are essential to a left back but may be a left winger.
May be when Armand gets better we can move Clichy up front do a ala Eboue on the left. I am sure in the back of AW mind he sees this happening. Maybe that is the reason he has not bought any established LM.

It will be a very relaxed night tonight. All I want to see is the fringe players giving an honest account of themselves and if we beat the Spuds it will be icing on the cake.

    Up the Arse!!!

  16. Barazite is back in training, Matt. http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?article=486615&lid=NewsHeadline&sub=Exclusive:+Nacer+Barazite+on+his+injury+agony&sublid=NewsHeadline&Title=Exclusive:+Nacer+Barazite+on+his+injury+agony&f=rss

  17. On the more than reasonable assumption that we go through tomorrow night why is it automatically assumed that we will be playing Chelsea? Everton have a pretty decent chance of getting a result – David Moyes and his team are no pushover and it would be nice to see Liverpool’s better team reach the final (only to fall at the final hurdle). On top of which, if Everton get through and we don’t then they can count on my support to win the cup. If Spurs and Chelsea get through then to paraphrase Henry Kissinger when he was commenting on the Iran/Iraq war ‘it’s a shame they can’t both lose’.

  18. Respectfully, I am tired of hearing Cliche has got a bit more to learn. Getting caught out of position is bound to happen for an attacking full back.

I think he is already the most consistent full back in the business. The kid is simply awesome. To say AW got him from a div 2 team for £500k say it all.

  19. Clichy is one of my fave gunners ever. He’s so humble, so focused, so consistent and so professional. At 22. Lasagna Diarrhea should learn from him. He came to Arsenal. Had Cole in front of him. Didn’t make a fuss. Didn’t disrespect. Just knuckled down, showed what he could, and when his chance came he took it. The boy will be a Gunner legend. Hope his son comes to Arsenal too.

  20. good point about Everton. its true they are no pushovers and maybe without the Drog-breath the Chavs will suffer at goodison. It would have been nice to have played a day later than them to know who we will get.

  21. AW will play a Gilberto/Denilson midfield combination that has failed to impress.

Diaby should be playing in the centre as should Walcott, blood Randall and Lansbury if not now when will they get the opportunity?

  22. Diarra is earning £60,000 a week at portsmouth who presumably expect to re-coup this when they sell him on to Juventus etc

  23. Gazzapl

    Agree 100% with ya mate.

Can’t beleive people are putting soooo much importance on this reserve game!

Who cares? Let the kids play and if it means the spuds win this game….Bothered. We got bigger fish to fry.

We have made massive improvements and one of the best ways to f*ck that up is by getting 1st teamers injured or suspended against the spuds.

We havent been involved in the title race for 3 years. I dont see why we should fuck that up coz of local rivalry!

  24. I have this team in my mind since last week:

    Fabianski
    Sagna-Hoyte-Senderos or Gilberto-Traore
    Randall-Denilson-Diaby or Bert-Diaby or Gibbs
    Theo-Bendtner

The bench is interesting. Maybe a mix of youngsters and first team members? Eduardo played a lot in this cuo, so he could be there. Nordtveit or Gavin as defensive cover, Gibbs and maybe Barazite.

  25. I think it is a good time to remember the Summer when many Gooners were pushing for the Dein lead buyout or complaining about the lack of funds. When you look at what’s going on at Liverpool, the revenue the Emirates is producing and our current league position I think that we should applaud the board for the excellent running of the club they have shown over recent years.

We should also note that there are still hostile forces waiting for an opportunity.

  26. I agree Marc. The general atmosphere in some Arsenal blogs was excruciating. I’m glad there were places such as this (bar some exceptions) where people mantained a sense of perspective.

And yes, we should keep an eye or twenty on the ownership thing. It may be the most important thing in a club… just ask FC United fans.

  27. I also agree with Marc. Good post again Yogi.
I was gonna delete my link to this site due to the clown who I won’t mention but i see he’s infecting other sites with his tripe opinions. It’s painful having to read his posts.
I know everyones entitled to an opinion but on the other hand your not obliged to have to read it.
Hopefully he finds his home again on vital football.

  28. BBC posted the squad (dont know how accurate it is) but from that id go with this

    Fabianski,
    Hoyte, Gallas, Senderos, Traore,
    Diaby, Denilson, Gilberto, Rosicky,
    Walcott, Bendtner,

Mannone, Sagna, Eduardo, Randall, Gibbs, Lansbury, G Hoyte.

  29. the BBC guess the squad and usually just put the same squad up from the last (CC) game so I would not trust it.
I did not know that Senderos would be injured because of that nose bleed. I guess it was a hell of a whack and it may have left him bruised. so Gallas WILL play. I dont mind that but I hope he does not have to play against Newcastle in the FA cup. Gallas is an older player and there is a limit to the number of games you can play before the risk of injury increases.

I think hoyte will play with Gallas but I hope its Gilberto, if only to get him out of midfield where he has looked totally off the pace of late.

  30. Yeah, Gallas should play tomorrow and be rested for the FA Cup. That sounds more than reasonable to me.

Randall will be playing for the reserves today, so that makes me wonder who will start on the right side of midfield tomorrow. Maybe Barazite?

  31. Thanks Ole – But i cant see Barazite playing having just started training after that kind of injury.

Maybe Gibbs will play on the left?

Who knows – either way it is going to be exciting!

  32. The intriguing part is who will play on the right. Hleb? Theo? Barazite? Denilson?

  33. heres the humiliating bit….

Spurs actually rested a bunch of players for this match! Berbatov played, but he could play every day – not exactly the hardest worker, but chimbonda and keane did not start, nor did king.

Any Arsenal player under twenty should go out there with a bib on…maybe we can even hand THE official ARSENAL bib to their captain at the start….

Walcott I feel will not likely start out wide – I think Wenger’s comments have put icing on that move….

  34. The intriguing thing for me is whether wenger will play Theo up front with Bendtner or whether he will go with EDS and Bendtner. it just seems to me, theo needs to get off the wing. the comment earlier that asked how many goals would a 17 year old Michael Owen have scored from the wing struck a chord. I really feel Theo is a square peg in a round hole there, probably to the detriment of his development as a striker.

  35. Gallas is playing at shite fart stain as senderos is injured.

  36. did everyone see Vela’s latest goal on Youtube? he scored the second in a 2-0 win. great finish. lashed a volley with his left foot from about 20 yards past the keeper, just inside the post. good to know our squad will be added to in the summer without us having to do anything.

  37. I prefer if Walcott plays with Bendtner, although this would be a light weight strikers against King and the other guy. I still think they have the quality to do it.

Eduardo should be held for the league + FA Cup.

I also hope Gallas will not play, but it seems from your posts that he will. Praying he doesn’t get injured or we will suffer badly in the back.

Yes Gazzap, he looks like a great young player to add to the squad next year. Some people want us to buy more players so we can stop the progress of our talented young players.

I agree with Malaysiangunner, I think when Traore is ready, Wenger will play Clichey/ Traore on the left. I think he did it before a couple of times when Cashley was still playing for us.

I hope we win tomorrow with no injuries…Am I asking too much?

    G4E

  38. Good post Yogi and yes i fully agree about Gael.
The fact nobody has touched on is his speed of recovery, as a winger you think your past him and then within no time at all he’s back snapping at your ankles like a terrrier dog.
He is still learning but i feel he could well be an all time great and as Flint has already said if he could add a goal or two to his game he would be lethal.
Probably Kenny Sansom is the best left back i have seen when he first came to Arsenal he literally ran the game from that position – some player!
As for tomorrow night i agree play the kids, they got themselves in this position they deserve to go on and get to the final. If indeed we got there then that becomes another kettle of fish but lets get there first.

  39. If the manager feels he has no choice but to play Gallas, so be it. I hope it’s worth it, i.e. no injury and him leading us to Wembley (without playing there in the final, preferably with Djourou back).

  40. Not a bad deal getting rid of Clive Allen for Kenny Sansom I think veteran. A big thank you to old Venables for that. I bet he was sick after that transfer.

  41. Your so right Steve

  42. Guys,

I thought you may be interested in the Governments official response to the petition raised in response to the Usamov affair.

I have implanted $ signs to try and avoid the Spam problem Yogi alluded to this morning – you will need to delete them when you have pasted the link to your browser.

  43. Government’s response

The Government is committed to ensuring that all football clubs are run in the best possible way and that they remain a focal point of their local community, including for the clubs’ supporters.

Governance is primarily a matter for Football itself, but the Government has been clear that the Football Authorities and clubs must demonstrate modern, competent governance and financial transparency if they are to protect the future integrity of the game.

Both the Premier League and the Football League introduced a fit and proper test (FAPT) for Directors of football clubs in the summer of 2004 whereby no-one convicted of a range of offences, including fraud, theft and being subject to football banning order, will not be able to be a director of a club.

The Government welcomes the Fit and Proper Person Test in this regard which already goes further than normal company regulations and is tailored to the ownership of Football clubs.

Further possible action is possible if requested by the Football Authorities and the Government will continue to work closely with them to ensure they have the tools to govern the modern game effectively.

  44. I hope the English government would do anything to protect our club….but I thought government doesn’t interfer in Football?

    G4E

  45. The Government welcomes the Fit and Proper Person Test in this regard which already goes further than normal company regulations and is tailored to the ownership of Football clubs.

    Taksin ? anyone ?
You people don’t realize the criminal your harboring !
G4E the government ’should’ interfere in this case !
Also wouldn’t be surprised to see some team regulars in action tonight ! Gallas being captain its a MUST !

  46. Malaysian, have u heard about the one where Titus James Palani is joining arsenal? eh? u think he’s good enough mate?

  47. Is Titus truly joining Arsenal?! I’ve never heard of him lately. He’s still in France i guess. But he has a record in Guiness Book for ball juggling.
