Theo, Arsene Loses The Plot And Fulham

Fulham this afternoon revisits what was possibly the worst forty five minutes of the past season and a half. Simply put it was a Craven capitulation; this time around though there can be no excuses for such an abject display.

The team will be without Robin van Persie who is going to Holland for his rehabilitation; apparently he will be out for two to three weeks but given the way this and last season have gone for the lad, I will believe it when I see it. And see him last for more than one match. Johan Djourou will be out for a similar spell but gets to see the sights of Hertfordshire instead.

The media are making a big story out of Theo Walcott’s absence. However, I did not expect to see him this afternoon unless Tomas Rosicky had failed to recover given the proximity of the Tottenham game. Arsene commented yesterday,

He will get where I expect him to be. At the moment he is not. But I’m not worried personally. He plays on confidence and he has qualities that will come out

Walcott comes in for some unfair criticism at times although his performance against Birmingham was poor, his mind seemingly elsewhere. People forget he is a youngster, albeit one with an expensive price tag on his head. Being picked for the World Cup in 2006 was deemed to be folly on the part of Eriksson but it also raised expectations given the paucity of genuinely talented English players. Walcott has skill in abundance and has inconsistently proven that. Part of the problem as Arsene admits is the fault of his manager,

I tried to force him to play wide but today I am convinced he will be a central player. I think that is where he will be happiest because he is direct, he has good timing for his runs and I believe he will do well

Playing out of position is nothing unusual for Arsene’s charges though but I suspect that Walcott’s biggest problem is mental. He has had a congenital shoulder injury resolved which held him back but now apparently the problem is on the other side. It is an instinctive human reaction to protect an injured part of the body, to prevent more damage and that will affect the way in which he plays.

As a centre forward, he has shown that he can play well there at international level, albeit Under-21’s; the Premier League is somewhat more rough and tumble. At Arsenal the biggest cross he has to bear though is our weight of expectation on his fragile shoulders; we were spoilt rotten with Fabregas but instead of recognising that the Spaniard was unique in the sense of his maturity combined with skill, those levels are imposed on others and when they do not reach those standards, the brickbats are handed out far too readily. It is also a sign of the changing times; Arsenal used to be a place where the support gave players time to adapt and come through. Now in a football world where winning is the only thing that matters, that adaptation period is inconsiderately short.

Another aspect that people should remember is there own work performance at eighteen. Ask yourself this – were you totally consistent at eighteen? Unless you were a child prodigy, the answer is no nor did you have millions of people scrutinising your performance so cut the lad some slack.

Back to Fulham, a team in trouble and the sort that have given us trouble in the past. They will never be a top team but have struggled more this season, their current run is no wins in eleven games and are without a clean sheet in the last twelve of their Premier League matches. They readily concede at home which will hopefully allow Adebayor – congratulations to him on being the BBC’s African player of the Year (although why that award is over a calendar year and not a season is beyond me) – and Eduardo to ‘make hay’.

The team for this afternoon largely picks itself. If Rosicky is fully recovered, I expect him to start with Diaby on the bench; if not then the roles will be reversed:

Almunia; Sagna, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy; Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini, Rosicky; Adebayor, Eduardo

With a bench of

Lehmann, Hoyte (J), Gilberto, Bendtner, Diaby

This is a game we have to win, a draw whilst not being the end of the world would give United an edge which in the current run of fixtures that both sides have is unlikely to be surrendered easily.

Arsene cut some rumours dead in their tracks yesterday by denying that any of the Russian players with which we have been linked will be joining whilst also coming up with what can only be described as ‘tosh and piffle’ about the transfer window,

It is not necessarily a good idea because it can change the force inside the League. For example, teams who you have not played against at all are stronger. To me, it is not fair

I think that has to be described as one of the worst excuses I have ever heard and simply put, I do not believe he believes that for it defies logic in the illogical world of football. He also hit the nail on the head with Diarra,

I believe he was impatient especially because he had known a situation like that before at Chelsea. When he had exactly the same problem again, he panicked a little bit

Finally Gilberto answered a short Q&A on the UEFA website.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Testament to Arsene. Real honest bloke, to be honest not really looking forward to the Fulham game but we’ll see how it goes.

2AM at night for us here in Oz which sucks.

  2. I admit I was one of the people going off on Walcott, I only take on him is losing the ball so easliy and almost consistantly. Even if you are playing out of position, the smart thing to do is pass the ball to a teammate, in short…play it simple.

I’m glad Wenger finally realized, that not every player (specially English) can convert to something else other than what they really are.

It’s is also true that Walcott playing in central role would be more effective with being direct, fast, and finally, hopefully good finishing.

Good Luck to all Gunners (including you Oracle) :)

    G4E

  3. Right Cannontime, 2am here…we need some sleep before the game :) at 8 am in AZ.

  4. You won’t get any argument from me Yogi. And I’m equally baffled by Wenger’s comment re the January window. If he believes the squad is strong enough without reinforcements then it shouldn’t matter what others do.

  5. Some good points there YW.

I think we all need to realise that Cesc is the exception, rather than the rule.

Theo is without doubt a talent, but in my opinion not ready to start games, certainly in his less favoured wide position. He is, at present, an impact player, who has a lot of pace to open teams up , late on.

He is also carrying this ridiculous weight of expectancy.

We have seen enough to know that he certainly can develop into the kind of player we want but we must give him time.

Quite often you see a young player go through bad periods, only to blossom when you least expect it.

  6. Good post YW

You are right YW, we Gooners are an impatient lot. Yes, Walcott is 18 and we should realised that. But I realise that AW is sometimes too optimistic of a persons ability to adapt. So he plays a lot players out of position. Maybe it is a French thing as I remembered Gerrard Houllier doing the same to Emile Heskey and Cisse in his Liverpool days. They did not adapt well but then they were well over 20 by then. So maybe age has something to do with it. But many good athleletics players can do so for eg TH 14, Toure and etc.. But some fail like Wiltord and now Theo. I hope Diaby will manage it. I believe it could be more a mental thing than a physical thing ie the footballing brain that can adapt. We know TH 14 other than his physical attributes is also a very intelligent person.

Theo has all the physical attritibute to be a first class winger but some how as mentioned by YW there seems to be a mental block some where.

Tonight for us here is South East Asia is a must win game. I am confident the lads will be up for it.

    Up The Arse!!!!

  7. I think we can beat ourselves as fans up sometimes. The weight of expectation Theo feels, is mainly that he places on himself.

He set himself some hearty challenges, goals and appearance wise pre season. I’m sure that this is healthy but there was really no particular need for these targets to be made public.

He was bought for a rather hefty transfer fee for such a young man and it is maybe this, that causes this young man’s growth to be rather different than that of other emerging youngsters.

Even, now the boss talks a lot about him, undoubtedly because he is honest and the media have asked about the lad.

Theo can come thru, when he just relaxes and acts the kid again.

  8. Malaysian

    Wiltord fail???

I always felt he did quite well on the right. Scored a few. Kept Freddie out the team at times. For a little burly striker he adapted quite well.

  9. Danny

Yes Walcott does have his own expectations but those placed upon by fans are higher; they have increased as well following on from the brace in the CL against Sparta.

The point is that we no longer give players time to adapt – if the individual does not shine straight away, then they are berated without considering circumstances.

    YW

  10. Not sure much has changed Yogi. Certainly the players get a rougher ride on the blogs but at the actual ground, players have always got a bit for grief for ropey starts.

When I’ve been at the games and Theo’s played the fans seem to give too much support for Theo. They definitely mean well, and are always trying to give him a lift, I suppose maybe that at times is still a form of pressure and has a detrimental effect on the lad.

  11. Yogi, wise words on youngsters – one of the most annoying themes recently being pursued by so called supporters recently was that Merida was being loaned out because he had failed and Arsene was dumping him – not in the first team at the age of 17, shocking………and Djourou has “failed” at the age of 20, Bendtner has to succeed this season or he’s finished…….

  12. Glad to see arsene pick up on his own errors .
He is consistently playing people out of position and in my opinion the only success story left is toure , flamini did well at left back , but like a sulk didn’t like playing there . I think walcott would be a good link up for dudu . In fact that would be worth watching a game of … It might patch up my fragile feelings on the striker scenario . Thou it probably wont for me ..

Arsene from that article sounds like a man with nothing in the bread basket, I think the 70 million war chest is a Hoax . I thought that when he started stating i ALMOST bought berbatov and Anelka ,like a jealous little boy watching a rich neighbor’s kid opening presents at Christmas time … This article takes the cake good pick up yogi !

At least it would explain why he isn’t buying this window ..

  13. i doubt we should use the excuse of Walcot as being young because he is judged alongside his team mates who are equally young. Denilson is 19 and has played on the right wing which is not his position, Diaby plys on the left yet he gets stick. Song 19 still he gets stick, Senderos young to be considered a seasoned defender. So pls lets face it either Walcot cant interpret what is expected of him on the wings which to me translate to the lack of ball sense or he finds it difficult to adapt to other positions like most english players

  14. UnWenger-like stuff. I thought it was always clear that Theo was a central player and that he was being played on the wing for experience. Why is the window unfair, we could buy too if we wanted? Strange.

  15. He is not buying because he’s not interested in it! He’s said it thousands of times.

Yogi, Arsène also said Theo wouldn’t play today because with the Tottenham match on tuesday he wanted to have him fresh to start. It could be an excuse, of course, but it makes sense.

  16. If Wenger comments on a player publicly, you can bet that Arsene has an agenda. He would never ctiticise a player if it had a dterimental effect. There is a reason for these public comments. Maybe the same comments privately have not had an effect. Don’t forget it was accompanied by a reassuring promise that Theo will perform

  17. Just to point out that good technical players have no problem playing outside of position. Look at Rosicky and Hleb switching positions in the second half.

There is nothing wrong with players exchanging positions, or playing out of position when the need arise. It also sometimes confuses the opponents defenders.

Good result today, although Fulham didn’t really have a change with their horrible form.

    :::Howard:::

    Ade adds “2″….I know what you’ll say…it doesn’t count because it’s Fulham…right?

And I will do the Oracle Ha-Ha.

    G4E

  18. Yeah YW, you tell them! Some of us have been asking for patience as they kid’s only 18 and they keep using other teenage sensations like Cesc as a benchmark, which is hugely unfair as, let’s face it, Cesc’s one of a kind and already in the first team at such young age for a reason. I don’t like to single out any posters here, but players have different levels of adaptability, to compare Theo with the likes of Denilson (who’s much more used to switching between positions bcos he did so with Sao Paulo in Brazil from a young age as part of the football training). Even if Theo can’t play the winger role well, so what? If he’s picking up (however slowly) some skills there, and he got some playing time at that young age, why not? Just that it’s (a) hurting his confidence, which is the case now, and (b) hindering his development, that makes Arsene give up the idea of forcing him to learn tricks by playing on the wing. The arrangement that Thierry benefited from may not be suitable for everyone. If Arsene admits as such, I’m actually glad he’ll put the kid back up front. The only thing’s that Ade, Eduardo and Bendtner are still ahead of him in the pecking order. While RvP is taking an extended time off now (so sad), Ade and Edu like today may have more games together. Which means maybe, just maybe, Bendtner/Theo might form a partnership in FAC or CC games, with Mark Randall coming in in RW. Who knows? I can see some positives there – at least Theo’s ending his misery in RW.

  19. Great Performance today, it was good to see us using the width, its not often we score goals from crosses let alone 3 three of them

    Well Done Arsenal

Just a shame Man Ure and Chelsea scored late on

  20. Good performance today. Eduardo was lethal! The Crozilian had a great game and was my MOTM. I was also very impressed with Rosicky’s effort on his goal. He ran hard the entire way. Fabregas was a bit anonymous, but for a wayward toe poke he would have been on the score sheet as well. Fulham are crap but it was good to see the team do the right thing and cruise to a win. Adebayor’s two goals were great stuff as well. He timed his leaps to perfection and the technique on the headers was awesome. All in all a good performance, which I hope will get the lads back on track.

  21. The same fans who protects players like Senderos, Diaby, Eboue, Denilson, Djourou and other below par performers are same criticising Theo Walcott this time. People should get off the back of Theo and allow him space to develop.

Theo is no worse than Diaby, Eboue, Denilson and Senderos who’re all being given chances to prove what they have to offer for the team.

Get off Theo’s back, afterall he’s only 18 and far younger than other players who’ve been with the club for years and still crap.

  22. Howard, your argument is fatally flawed – the people who criticise Walcott are the same people who criticise other players. If Walcott deserves time, so do the others otherwise I question the reason why you apply different standards to the other players you name?

  23. pass
the difference between walcott and others is he is English ! we shouldn’t have to say anymore to begin with … also he is the only one who is played out of position .. in drastic proportions ! a striker played as a midfield player ! might as well get jens to become a left winger ! and then the final difference is his age !
he is younger than anyone , with more potential oozing from him ,than anyone! It just needs to be used correctly !
instead of wenger persisting with him being a right winger .. the only fatal flaw i see is you writing a kid off when he’s not given a chance to shine in the position he gained recognition in !

  24. gaya

again the denilsons and diabys are still midfielders
just playing left or right , they still have the SKILL SET of a midfielder , when do we play a defender as a striker ? or a striker as a defender ? a Striker and a midfielder has differing skill sets ! , most midfield players dont even have an EYE FOR GOAL !
So why waste a hungry little strikers lust for goal by playing him so far away from it ??? !!

    think with the brain !

  25. So, to sum up, Ade was poor today?

    Ethan,

It was obvious that we were going to buy a couple of players in the summer, one of them being a forward and the other one a winger. Eduardo and Sagna were these players, Sagna being a right back but allowing Eboué to start playing in front of him. After that, Arsène said he wouldn’t buy any more strikers because he didn’t collect them, he just bought the ones he needed. And I agree with him in that, we have a lot of options up front with Theo now apparently switching back to that position. Are there any other weak areas? Well, the defence a bit but it’s just temporary, Kolo, Eboue and Song will be back and we won’t need more bodies there.

Think of it this way: Diarra off, Djourou on. That’s the only change in our squad for this semester and I’m ok with it. Of course, if, Arsène says, we find a real gem available at a good price, then maybe something could happen, but don’t hold your breath ’cause it’s unlikely.

It maybe time for the youth players now. Randall has a place open on the right if Theo starts playing up front. Gibbs could also see some minutes on the left. Carling Cup on tuesday will be interesting.

  26. nacho
we do have vela coming in next year too ,
but is that soon enough to cover for the injury prone
RVP ? bendtner is good but still to raw , ade is the wrong sort of player to play with AFC ! and it leaves you with dudu ! Im sorry ade showed more of the same to me .. again most people cant see it because we got the result ! But as far as flair is concerned Upfront its lacking, and ade takes dudu out of the ball game by his selfishness ..
Thing is arsene would probably buy someone
but anelka is gone and others would take too much time to adapt . But mark my words he will buy next transfer window .. and it will be a striker
Unless this season someone UNEARTHS someone !

  27. nacho

Unless this season someone UNEARTHS themselves !

dudu – RVP duo … is my bet …

  28. Ade was definitely better ! at least he didn’t give away possession as much ! so if that makes him better then YES ! As far as playing with his partner upfront .. He is still the same .. Watch the game !

There are much better strikers in the League – ronaldo – berbatov – torres – anelka -benni mac even petrov .. has more skill !

And for a top team we dont have any that come close !!!! think about it !!!

    ALL OF YOU !!!!

  29. If it wasn’t for clichys and Hlebs sublime crosses that were so perfect ade would have done nothing AGAIN!

yes he’s a big bugger ! but you need to credit the vision of the people who crossed the ball ! because if they didnt we would of won 1 nil !

  30. And nacho i agree it is unlikely .. As all the team changing tranfers are out of the question this transfer window or gone already (anelka)
but remember even you missed diarra’s signing ..
As wenger said no more signings after dudu !

then we got sagna and diarra after he supposedly said SHOP SHUT !

    arsene surprises you …

  31. But for the last time i will state !!!

I dont have a problem with our starting 9 from 11

    ———alumina
    sagna-toure-gallas-clichy
    Hleb cesc flamini rosicky

But then i have problems ..
    (RVP dudu ) ????

Ade is rubbish , and dudu needs a partner ..
therefore we need another striker …
for me its very apparent ! Maybe if RVP came back we would’nt need to have this conversation .. but do we want to loose our position based on this gambling ?
As options upfront are second rate !!!!
We need an experienced goal scorer !
And a veteran defender like sol .. wouldnt go astray .. Someone who can come in and do a job and dont mind playing every 2nd or 3rd game ..
Senderos did ok … and for that reason i think only a striker is Seriously needed ..

But after anelka , there really was no SELF starter left !
Berbatov maybe but i dont think wenger would have much luck prying him from Spurs of all people !

  32. and nacho

Eduardo and Sagna were these players, Sagna being a right back but allowing Eboué to start playing in front of him.

that was NEVER apparent ! eboue played as a winger 1 time against west ham . How you could base that opinion is beyond me .. Sagna was brought in for RB
and CD cover flexibility … He won French Defender of the year so there goes another G4E , we never buy established well known players :) And we have enough in the middle of the park . Arsene had the idea to move eboue , but what else could he do ?
drop him all together??? He should of .. But he had more faith in him …
but the above formation i stated is far better
and eboue was really made surplus or 2nd fiddle , fitness permitting !

  33. Ethan, pls pls sidestep the Anelka/Berbatov rants. AW like u stated clearly 3000 times has his way of doing things. If he buys good, if not good…try to be more constructive man, U clearly have the intellect but it seems like your passionate side controls u too much. Damn man, chill out a bit & let’s enjoy your mind!!!

    Up the Arse!

  34. Aman

get a grip , its just my opinion !
do we live in a communist world ?
you relax and chill ! not me !

    and stop chastising people !
    you must be american !!!
    Ok big brother !

And why must i sidestep anelka ??
    does it hurt?
Its pretty obvious he isnt joining us ..
so why does it hurt your ears ! ?
I said its obvious we are not buying anyone
because he would have been arsenes only target .
Ive had enough of your rants aimed at me !
get the @@@@ off my back !

  35. constructive??

gee , is you giving someone a serve constructive ?
I think not .. just be quiet if you cant talk football !

  36. Communists, americans, foreigners, you don’t like anyone, ethan. :)

“As wenger said no more signings after dudu !”

He never said that. And if he did I bet it was before someone’s departure, which made space for a new signing.

Regarding Sagna: he was brought in for several reasons. One was that our defence had been to fragile, and Eboué wasn¡t solid enough at the back. But Arsène thought Eboué had the talent, so he kept him in the team and started playing him more often at RW (where he had played well against for example spurs in the CC last season). This way he solved two problems in one: the need for cover in the wings and the need to make our defence better. With Eboué as a winger, also, we were adding a more “balanced” option down the right too, ’cause he knew how to cover the RB position when Sagna overlapped. It was a smart signing.

  37. Oracle you should stop all this BS who we should buy now if u read the small print in the bond issue, we can spend 9 miilion nett on tranfers THAT 9 MILLION ABOVE WHAT WE GET IN FROM TRANSFERS. Theres no 70 million to spare so you have to live with Ade. a veteran feender like SOL dont make me laugh Sol is slower than Gilberto. After the ANC Song will be in contention for sy¡tand by CB or to deputise for Flamini, Song has improved tremendously since his loan spell.

  38. [...] Theo, Arsene Loses The Plot And Fulham Fulham this afternoon revisits what was possibly the worst forty five minutes of the past season and a half. Simply put […] [...]

  39. Forgive me Oracle for my sins, I will never again try to appeal to the calmer side of u. U are who u are and I now fully accept it…

  40. Solgooner: there is indeed a lot of money available if it’s needed. Check the last annual report.

  41. Oracle, two words “Hopeless Case”.

  42. Why do you people bother with him. He was doom and gloom in august, then he departed when things were going well, now when we have a dip he is back with his negative attitude. No matter what Wenger does he will never be satisfied because he requires BIG names and that is not Wenger’s way. If someone disagrees with him they are “gimps” or worse.

Anyone who goes to games knows that you never see the full movement of a player on TV as the camara follows the ball. Ade’s movement is very good and makes room for the midfielders to fill.

G4E: I agree he is a Hopless Case. And as Frank would say. Oh Dear!

  43. nacho
check your facts we were not as far wenger was concerned buying ANYONE , he then came out and said due to henrys departure he had to replace him (with dudu)… then sagna came after that and diarra still .

    steve
I require 1 big name striker to make use of our great midfield i know most of you lack the vision to see it , but trust me it needs it ! You people keep this discussion going , by your vain attempts to prove me wrong .. as for ade’s movement like ive said and keep having to repeat myself, workrate counts for poo if you keep spilling possession ! And wont pass to your strike partner!

You might as well have kept TH14 at least he could find the back of the net .. Because all i can see is someone with the exact same attitude minus the skill and technical ability ..

  44. sol goon

I said ‘LIKE’ sol .. meaning English pref. experienced definitely .. and not to worried about being the 1st sub.. and not in the starting 11 ..
you are out of your mind if you think i was asking for sol back !

    Aman
if you want to appeal to anyones good side dont start off by saying
Ethan, pls pls sidestep the Anelka/Berbatov rants.

Im over it!!! but others keep bring up the issue ..
as its the only thing they can keep saying !
It still doesn’t make our striker woes go away though !

    also
If he buys good, if not good…try to be more constructive man,

this is a blog its opinions .. what opinions do you want to hear here ?
Everything is brilliant , that our strike options are the best in the league ?? We would rather conserve money for some rainy day that will never warrant Arsene spending a cent ? Or maybe like him you would rather say its unfair for clubs to buy players during a TRANSFER WINDOW ?
yes it fully makes sense to me ! You only ever come on here and lay personal attacks on me ..
I ignored you last time .. but im not this time !

if you want constructive TALK football talk not
getting all personal , about the do’s and donts about want im allowed to say ..
At least G4E and nacho right or wrong have an opinion !!!

also RE :sol goon not sure how you think we can only spend 9 mil ? what planet are you on ?
Who do you think we are Sunderland ?

  45. G4E

    Oracle, two words “Hopeless Case”.

    you talking about Ade??? :)

  46. Etahn who is the best striker in the league at the moment? Adebayor. Ronaldo is a great midfileder and has scored shed loads of goals but the manure strikers have not.

  47. -etahn
    +ethan

  48. Steve, I think you are right man. I’m done. Hopeless case was the end of a useless argument with a single cell brain.

Instead of wasting my time on the pessimistic broken record…I’ll go enjoy the game again.

Two very well placed headers that’s a beauty to watch. Although the game was easy, the lads showed that they will not take it lightly as they did with B’ham. The 3rd goal was also a nice one from Eduardo and Rosicky.

Keep it up young gunns. The future is ours and maybe the present as well.

    G4E

  49. ronaldo is playing in a forward role !
if you hadnt noticed Man U are playing a 3-3-4
with ronaldo – rooney and tevez up front !

also Benjani is pretty good , but you have to realize
NONE of the EPL teams have the supply that ARSENAL’s midfield brings ! He should be tallying over 25 goals by now ! OVER !!!! Our midfield are so
creative that he just parks in the 6 yard box and gets spoon fed .

But like everyone says wenger wont buy a EPL player .. so you really have to look for options over the channel and beyond .
Also torres is pretty special , if he didnt play infront of such a average side he would yield more also ! much the same as anelka and berba ..

  50. Adebayor….Adebayooor…..Adebayoor….Adebayooooor………..Hahahaha.

  51. gents, why attack the messenger and not critically evaluate the message?
