Fabregas Thinks Arsene Is Smelly

The news that the missing trio of Fabregas, Hleb and Flamini all trained on Friday is welcome indeed. Added to the midweek return of Robin van Persie, it means that the strongest squad available to Arsene is ready for selection to varying degrees.

He has commented that he will make a decision on Sunday morning about who participates that afternoon against Chelsea and to what extent their involvement will take. For all of the conjecture about the team, it would not surprise me if Arsene chose all of RvP, Flamini, Fabregas and Hleb to start.

Fabregas is the subject of an interview in The Times this morning. He has some interesting views on English players,

I don’t see a lot of English players taking the risk to go out of the country to try to fight for their chance. It looks like they are comfortable where they are and that is it

There is a substantial element of truth in that but historically Spaniards have travelled out of the country less than the English. Whilst it is becoming more common, the reluctance of English players to move is somewhat baffling if you think of anything other than money. After all, many outside of professional football move abroad and are successful at it; football is perhaps a more mobile career, albeit shorter, so why do more not do it?

Fabregas is asked to describe Arsene in six words. His first was ‘smelly’ which apparently meant intuitive. The others were talented, sacrificial, intelligent, patient and winner. He was also asked to draw a picture of himself on a whiteboard and the result was him scoring the only goal against Chelsea tomorrow. His comment afterwards,

I ask the supporters to cheer and help the team even if we are behind. It’s very important.

Arsene echoed that theme,

I want our fans to be behind out team and not to especially have resentment with Ashley Cole

Funnily enough, we as supporters ask the impossible of the team every week and more often than not, they deliver. Will we do so when he asks the same of us? No chance. Cole will be hammered. Personally, I do not care about him, anger over the move dissipating as soon as last season started. If some bear grudges so be it; that is the history of football and it will not change. However it should not detract from backing the team from the off.

The debate about who of Fabregas and Hleb is the most important to the team misses the point to some degree. To compare them in terms of skill is disingenuous as they bring different skill sets to the team. None is more important to any outcome and all are missed in equal measure when the trio are out at the same time. A combination of two of the three will compensate for one who is missing but not entirely.

Populist mythology suggests that Fabregas is more important. The media ram that message down our throats all of the time. He is the more complete player of the three but that does not mean that he is the only key ingredient in Arsenal’s successful start to this season.  The combination of their play is crucial. Either can be provider and scorer; neither can do everything by themselves. Each provides an outlet for the other and their teammates, a strong player who works hard to give themselves space to receive a pass. If anything, Hleb is possibly the better of the two at receiving the ball under the close attention of an opponent, his count of stray passes amongst the lowest in the Premier League.

Flamini has provided a solid cover in midfield for the other two to display their respective flair. Having been given the opportunity, he has not spurned it. Concerns about whether or not he can regain the form he has shown thus far are not unfounded but should not be any deeper than those surrounding any player coming back from injury. Quite simply, he has worked too hard to surrender his place easily. He knows that Diarra is building in the same way that he has had to and putting him in the defensive role would not be hard for Arsene, especially if the gifted individuals are back in the team.

This match is being built up beyond its importance. It is a key game but one of twenty four remaining. A win is the demand, a draw is acceptable under the current conditions but defeat is dangerous, possibly damaging morale. However, after the game there will still be sixty nine points to be won or lost and those are the ones where titles will be won or lost.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Thanks YW. Interesting take as usual.

Good news on the injury front but I somehow doubt we shall see all of them play. It would be too risky.

The likelihood is that either Hleb or RVP will play with 1 replacing the other later in the game.

Whilst having Cesc back would be an enormous boost, no one should underestimate what it will mean to have Flamini back.

Flamini’s form is no flash in the pan. He is a traditional ‘Arsenal’ player, gives everything all of the time. He has now matured into the player we hoped for & will go from strength to strength.

Good thread with Ethan & NEM last night. Good to see. The thing with the apprentices is that very very few make it to be regular 1st teamers with us. This has always been the case. Occasionally you get golden generations, eg Simpson/Storey/Rice etc Brady/O’Leary/Stapleton or Adms/Rocky/Thomas etc. The rest is a few here & there.

It is accepted that most youngsters will not make it to the top level but those that do help to create the Arsenalness that is vital to the team code & spirit.

What has changed is that now some 16/17year olds are coming for biggish transfer fees. Perhaps the expectation for those is higher. We shall see.

The clear thing is that it is still a version of the Arsenal way. The traditionalists, among us, love to see a team built mainly from within or relatively unknown players. Big transfers rarely work for us.

  2. Agree with you regarding the desperate, self-absorbed little hollowness that is Ashley Cole.
He is the one who started this whole press slather off earlier in the week, making a big martyr thing out of his return because he so desperately wants to be the centre of attention.
For me he just doesn’t matter. He played for Arsenal before Clichy and the new team. Gael fills that position now with electric, exhilarating play every week, with Traore in promising development right behind.
To me Cole’s days seem a remarkably long, irrelevant time ago. Been there, done that.
Who the fuck cares about Ashley Cole.

  3. I’m happy the three including RvP are all back. I knew they’ll be back and that Arsene was being pessimistic just to unsettle Chelsea planners.

The 3 points is already in the bag; all that we need to do is to give them the support they need to deliver the goods. Shout till we see cracks in the Emirates structures.

We should forget about this Cole guy and we shouldn’t make him important. We don’t need Cashley Cole.

  4. i agree with you flint

from the stand point that arsene has thrown a 5 year deal at flamini. Obviously he plans on keeping him around as he sees the potential there . He reminds me a bit of olde ray parlour . Gritty ,workhorse style of player who goes largely unnoticed unless your really looking . I still feel though that denilson or diarra will become a casualty however ..
You add gilberto into the mix and we are over stocked in that department ,4 defensive midfeilders with one spot on offer !
I’m sure this is gilberto’s final year . Unless things come to a head , im also sure gilberto will see out the season, and go quietly . He could also demand to play 1st team football ,in which case you could see him leave next month , basically the same as jens. They are both getting on and need 1st team football to keep there skills sharp..
I mean gilberto is involved with Brazil also so i think it isn’t fair to restrict either player as backups with there credentials and more importantly there involvement in there respective national teams. but it is pretty plain to see that they are on the outer as we say in cricket .

  5. I agree with you people in that Ashley should just be ignored. Though wouldn’t it be excelent if Clichy scored his first Arsenal goal tomorrow?

From yesterday’s blog: “Also i think you avoided the goalie question !
WHO ? what age ? where from ? our youth academy?
and its obvious he will buy .. But who ?”

I don’t know, that’s the answer, with a dosis of I don’t care thrown in the mix. I’m not so interested in transfer market speculation right now, and don’t have the information to do it.

Regarding the rest: ethan, I think we agree with certain things but you answered as if we didn’t. For example, in the fact that there’s football outside the EPL. The problem is we don’t watch it. Maybe we watch some spanish, italian, ok, but who knew Hleb before he came to us? And Sagna? And they were established first teamers. That’s why I think it’s really hard to speculate on transfers, we simply have no idea of three quarters of the football world or more.

  6. three points already in the bag????can i have some of what you having Howard because i really wanna feel that confident too

i do hope we get that three points because iknow we capable of it,and winning against their defenc would put us in good stead.

cant wait to hear who actually makes it for the game,as um sure the whole of Chavski r waiting too

  7. Ethan made it quite clear all summer that he does not agree with Arsene’s transfer policy! Frankly it has become boring!

We know he wants Anelka, but we all know Wenger is not about to pay the over hyped price for a Premiership 25 plus years of age player.

Had a look at the Bulgarian lad, obviously he looks good on YouTube, could not tell if he had the pace or strength though.

I feel Wenger really will only play the players who are not a risk but that still could be all three, he may well have been saving them for this fixture.

Agree on Flamini, he has really come on as a player and is capable of winning the midfield battle tomorrow. Strongly feel, that tomorrow should not be defined by who we may or may not have returning but by those that Chelsea definitely have out. Drogba and Essien equals a Chelsea side we should always fancy beating!

They have turned around a run when they could not even dream of beating us, time to turn it back on them!

  8. Casicky

Well thats where your wrong , i do agree with arsenes transfer policies !
Sanga was purchased for 7 mil . dudu was purchased for 7-8 mil.. Hleb for 10 mil. rosicky for 6mil
MORE OF THE SAME PLEASE ! NOT KIDS !
although i do believe dudu has been disappointing in the EPL to date .
And i don’t like anelka thanks! But i think he will tide us over until we get a real 2nd striker ..
But alas it sounds like chevski’s will be moving in on him , As drogba’s out and then at the ANC .
Also if you remember 2 or 3 months ago when figures for the richest clubs in the Uk were released . arsenal where on top,And arsene came out and said he could spend up to 70 mil if he wanted too this window!
    Heres to hoping !

  9. sorry Casicky
its danny whos the pratt , i was directing it at him !

and you think im boring look what you just wrote

I feel Wenger really will only play the players who are not a risk but that still could be all three, he may well have been saving them for this fixture.

NO #hit sherlock ! talk about stating the obvious !
3 may play , but they may not ! thank you for your excellent prognosis .

Again i apologize to Casicky as the web page half loaded, then timed out leaving your name on danny’s scribble !

  10. Danny Boy I would not count your chickens before the hatch. Wenger sometimes find ways to give away points due to his over confidence. The game is a ninty minutes darby and Aresenal has to strike early. You can see these last minute comebacks is catching with them. Even without Drogba and Essien Chealsea is still dangerous.
Now do I think Arsenal can win! yes they need this win to show they are the true front runner but no premiership teams has ever won the league in December. So take this game in stride it’s only one game.

  11. nacho your in the USA right?
    dont you have cable ?
because i get most series A games, la liga french – german ..And some very talented players .Asian football has some real stars also ! Pace ,skill ,smarts
Im keen on the south american football too , boca juniors are a great team , watch them if ever you get the chance ! But you are correct arsene gets alot of unknowns .. But trust me there is plenty of choice to pick from out there , only time and work permits are the restrictions .

  12. now i was after 25 + aged players danny?
its like playing Chinese whispers ! .

i want to state a phrase made popular by gordon ramsay , but i fear yogi wont process it :)

  13. Loads of sense there Ethan. You are dense! Feel sorry for your kid!

  14. Just thought I’d pop in and say,

Let’s leave the progeny of commenters out of it. Irrespective of the lightness of tone or the fact that the comments are directed at the poster, I have to say as a parent that any comment that involved my children would send my blood pressure through the roof. Perhaps I’m over-sensitive but hey, that’s what makes me so [insert your own adjective here].

At the same time, the histrionic comparisons to Nazi’s can go the same way.

    Cheers

    YW

  15. Ethan

    >And i don’t like anelka thanks!

Pardon???? You’ve been his biggest champion going! The summer saw continual requests for his return and you’ve done the same recently.

C’mon, admit it. You like the moody little devil.

I don’t doubt that he is a good finisher but as he said a short while ago, he would not be guaranteed a starting place anymore. Plus, he would be more than a tad disruptive.

    YW

  16. Ethan, I live in Argentina so there’s lot of Boca coverage in here. In fact, tomorrow the arses that manage Fox Sports will show the REPLAY of Boca – Meelan instead of Arsenal-Chelsea live, so I’ll have to watch it on a stream or on a replay a couple of hours later.

There’s spanish, italian, german, argentinian, champions league and international football here too. But it’s hard to follow everything up to the point of being able to spot a player like Clichy in France’s third division…

I agree with you that the Hleb-Sagna-Rosicky kind is the best Arsène can buy for the first team, because they’re talented, open minded and young enough to be able to adapt, not already established superstars with huge salaries. That’s why a player like Anelka cannot be easily thrown into this mix, though you have to admit that his attitude has improved a lot in the last few years.

  17. Thanks Yogi on the last two comments, I think we needed them as many of us come here for a good reading followed by a good debate.

I think we tend sometimes to respond to the person instead of responding to the issue they bring. I think we are much better today though :) it’s a nice feeling being united before a Chelski game….I can tell you, I hate losing to them….So, I hope we will win tomorrow.

I agree with Ethan on Gilberto & Lehmann, Gilberto may finish this year…I say that with a doubt that he may not even finish the season. Arsene needs to do that to open some room for all the others in midfield. Gilberto has done a great job for Arsenal, but he is from another era now….it would only be fair to let him have regular football somewhere else for the last couple of years of his career. Same goes for Jens, but has to be done when we secure a good replacement. Jens was %90 good keeper and a huge %10 EGO but his days are numbered as well, again maybe till the end of his contract.

I agree with Yogi, who cares what happens with Cole…if the crowds wants to boo him for a bit so what? Sol Campbell used to get booed by the Sp*rts every game for 5 years. The most important though is to cheer our team ….I will quote Howard on that with a slight change,

all that we need to do is to give them the support they need to deliver the goods. Shout till we make the Emirates a scary fortress or something……I don’t any cracks in my Emirates structure man :)

Good luck to the best, out Arsenal

    G4E

  18. <<that was our Arsenal

  19. If Flamini does not start, I hope Gilberto is not in the running, he definitely too slow, and he misplaces too many passes. Diarra might have something to prove, so could do well. Either way there has not been a better chance of beating Cheski in the last 2 seasons

  20. I’m praying that Almunia will be up and doing in this game. He seems to have problems with big games and hopeful he can put his panick-driven performances behind him on Sunday.

It’s a big game we can’t afford to lose. A loss will be too devastating and a win will really rebuild confidence and a boost in upcoming games against Spurs and Everton.

  21. there are 3 or 4 question marks over the players but I think they will all play. wenger knows its a gamble but he is a gambler and he will take it. RVP might not be able to last 90 minutes, the same goes for Cesc, but I think wenger will want 75+ mins out of both of them.

Diaby can come in for Cesc later, Diarra can come in for Flamini later and Bendtner can come in for RVP later. he has been playing better than EDS so I think Bendtner will be used.

Eboue could be the other sub in case Hleb needs to come off.

if our best 11 start you have to feel as if a win is well within our capabilities. we need to hope that the players that have been out can come in and play at the top level straight away. Diaby and RVP showed they could do that and I dont doubt that Cesc, Flam and Hleb can do it too.

  22. Yogi ,
honestly i hate anelka ! hes a club hopping hippee ! But He is the only unsettled striker in the league who probably would come to arsenal (again!)
at the drop of a hat ! He wouldn’t be much more than 5-6 mil and i think within arsenes price range . And most importantly we know he would preform straight off the bat ! (no dudu teething problems)..
So i suppose from the stand point i do like him .
But on a personal level i have no respect for him .
But as ever im not the sort to hold grudges (for too long) , and like to put the team first before emotions . Not that it will probably happen as like i said earlier as it seems that chelsea feel the same way as me . he’s a proven performer , hes a good goal hungry striker and should yield you 15+ goals a season for the next 2 years . And better for us he would give us over lap whilst bentner ,ade, dudu are coming good . I think its important to play 4-4-2 again and attack the other top 3 instead of this holding midfield set up we have at every important fixture we face . Quite frankly its a little ugly for me . a lot of creativity but not much finishing !

Some useless facts going into the game tomorrow (today for me )
chelsea in there last 21 games against the top 3
have only lost 3 times out of 21 ..
and this season have kept 10 clean sheets ..

Scoring goals will be hard , but i’m thankful they are missing 3 key players .

As for danny , my boy is a smart lad ! potty trained and well advanced of you it seems ,
and it just goes to show you how bigger moron you are ..
Keep it about the football ! but no need to direct comments at me anymore because to me your no one ! And i just skip over you .. It was only yogi’s comment that made me read your blog.. and see what a plonker you truly are .. but i knew that already..

  23. yogi

If you go through your archives i think youll find i didn’t even talk about anelka 6 months ago, and if i did it was all negative! .. What changed my mind? apart from the obvious that he can score goals with startling regularity , its one of those voids that need to be filled , since TH14 has gone we really haven’t had anyone else to step up in that roll (RVP is class and holds 1 spot). Bentner has much more ball control than ade, and is 4 years younger (thats potential !)..And not sure with ade’s ego if he will want to play 3rd striker , so he had better pull his finger out and show he can pass and create chances ,because bentner moved the ball far better than ade V’s steaua, and that might be due to what nacho was talking about , that he has played through the youth ranks and has adapted to arsenals game play better than ade !

But dudu in every game has been played out of position, it would be nice if we played a 4-4-2 with dudu and RVP up front . Id like to see that .. I think last time he was played as a striker it was against Seville and he scored !
Im not anti- ade but i know what ive seen and i think he needs a lot more work before he is the finished product. And for that reason i rate bentner over him . If bentner was given the chances ade had im sure he would be the number one goal scorer for us ..

But this transfer window it would be madness not to pick up a seasoned striker and top flight goalie .But what top flight goalie would want to leave a club mid season ?

  24. here’s the trade that’s in the works for January with our N. London friends…

    3 for 1…

    Gilberto/Diarra/Denilson…

    for Berbatov.

    as good as done…

    steal!!

  25. it is Nicklas Bendtner with a D ffs

  26. actually , the person i wanted to join the club 6 months ago was martins ! He was the one i talked non stop about .. I always thought there was younger options available for strikers, i think you had me confused with someone else yogi … i only turned the anelka corner once RVP got injured .

  27. oh and mc’carthy !!

  28. When was the last time Wenger bought a player from a club in the PL? Walcott, his club was not playing in the PL, and Gallas in some weird circumstances with Cashley going the other direction. So is Diarra who didn’t want to stay at Chelski, otherwise we would’ve never got him.

We normally give clubs like BBurn, Birm. City, etc., we don’t take from them. We have what it takes, RVP, Ade, Bendtner, Eduardo, and Walcott…buy any established striker with a 3 year contract and you set back the progress of one of them by three years. So who’s it going to be? Put Walcott in the reserves or Ade? We have 5 strikers, when one drops in form we use the other…you just have to get the best out of them when they’re in form. It’s obvious Bendtner and Walcott getting more and more time. As for Eduardo, I think it’s all mental in the PL for him….he playes good for his country and in tough games, the PL is not the same…he has to find his legs and his mind to make a place for himself.

Patience is a virtue, and it’s a hard one to find.

    G4E

  29. A brief return from the wilderness. How does that saying go

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

sorry Frank the boss will have all back except Theo and I feel he will use all the means possible to take this a win. My only worry is Terry and his gang flaying around with their boots to people such as Helb, can not catch him boot him off the park.
I expect all will play we can use one half back line for 60 minutes and replace them with almost like for another 30 minutes with similar ability, with perhaps leaving one on to change a forward. Go you Mighty Gunners now is the moment now is the time.
