Was Hleb Rushed Back Too Quickly?

One is never quite sure what to make of the injury news that is carried on the pages of the official site although yesterday’s news that Alexander Hleb is unlikely feature against Newcastle is not that much of a surprise. His hamstring injury has recurred so the omens are not good. The seriousness of his injuries is subject to conjecture but it is reminiscent of the breakdown Henry suffered through returning too quickly last March. Arsene’s tone indicates it is not that bad although he is by all accounts an eternal optimist on the injury front. Added to that, the tackle from Carew was agricultural, excused by the feeble term of a forward’s challenge.

That simply does not wash. It was reckless, dangerous and fully deserving of a red card. That is the edict that the Professional Game Match Officials board put out in the close season yet there is ample evidence of it being ignored on a weekly basis. However, the biggest problem with such an edict is that it leaves too much subjectivity in the decision-making. Compare the tackle of Carew with that which earned Robbie Keane a red card. Both were equally as bad so why the different reaction. I can understand why Tottenham are appealing against the expulsion but it simply has to fail if the PGMO are to retain any credibility. That is before we even take into account the ‘Papal Infallibility’ proffered on match officials by FIFA.

Back to Hleb. The loss is a blow and as Arsene commented yesterday, you can only hope that the players who are falling like flies are mending equally as quickly. Whilst these losses are troublesome in the short term, it is only the long-term absentees who give cause for concern. Robin van Persie’s absence seems to be the ‘Never Ending Story’ of this season; still no word on a return date although it would be nice if he were to be fit for the Steaua game as this would give the opportunity for him to have a twenty minute run out before Chelsea. We shall see.

Don Howe in The Telegraph believes that Newcastle lack the physical edge to trouble Arsenal in the way that Bolton used to. That is as maybe but they have enough in their midfield to break the play up and make life awkward so three points should not be taken for granted. Newcastle seems to be the latest in a long line of clubs in crisis with a whole three members of their squad up in arms about going to a post-Christmas training camp. Add to that the widely reported story that Allardyce will be out on his ear if they lose and you have the recipe for them to play out of their skins.

In a time when football’s press coverage seems to revolve around the bad elements of the game, it is good to read of the players and other staff donating a day’s wages to The Treehouse School, the club’s Charity of the Season. Part of a campaign called ‘Be A Gooner, Be A Giver’, the day’s wages in question will be those earned on December 16th, the Chelsea fixture when a portion of some of the commercial revenues will also be donated, namely 50p from each programme sale.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Can’t blame Wenger or Hleb. It falls down to Mr Carew’s inability to tackle properly.

Perhaps you could blame the whole Arsenal team actually… had they been 4-1 up, then perhaps Villa wouldn’t have been so desperate and coming up with crazy tackles! ha! :)

  2. James

It is the recurrence of the hamstring that is of concern; the tackle he might have shaken off but will have had to tread carefully for the h/s is a bit of a devil once it goes.

    YW

  3. Hamstrings don’t take well to having a f**king great big knee rammed into them, so who says it’s a “recurrence” and not a new injury?

  4. Judging by the way he was playing bofore that barbaric act from Carew, there was little evidence that he was ‘rushed back’. And even he was indeed rushed back, it was only worth it because it’s better for him to miss the Newcastle game rather then the Villa game where he was so instrumental in our 3 points grabbing.

  5. YW, I think Carew’s tackle deserved a red more than Keane’s tackle. Sometimes players with these huge bodies don’t have too much control. It feels sometimes like they’re the Bull in a China store…does any one remember Heskey on Walcott?

We’ve been beating up on Eboue so much but I didn’t hear any one talking about Walcott in the Aston Villa game, we were almost playing with 10 against 11, what is going on with this young man? He doesn’t seem to shift into 2nd gear.

I know this may not relay to YW’s post today, but I had to bring it up after seeing Bentley’s goals and Larsson’s………any one who says Arsenal/Arsene doesn’t contribute to English football is just a hypocrate. I know Larsson is not English but letting him go to BC is helping an English team. The list of English players that Arsenal provided to other teams in the league just goes on and on and all of them are doing good for their current clubs. Upson, Stokes……you can almost create a second English team with them. Arsene has done Bentley a great favor by letting him go, if he stayed at Arsenal with all the talent we have, he would never play day in and day out as he does with Blackburn.

I lost any respect I had for Lehmann, I really hope he goes away….I will take Eboue’s antics over Lehmann’s any time any day.

    G4E

  6. By the way Yogi, are you baking any humble pie any time soon?

I think Howard needs a big slice after Eboue, and Ade’s performances at Aston Villa.

  7. I was quick to judge eboue on the right of mid. he needs to have a blinder against newcastle for us. however walcott was no doubt poor but i’ll give him a pass against villa – hey i know you’ve only played on the right and up front… so here’s the left, have fun… by the way we’re defending for our lives so we need you to backtrack and hold possesion – 2 of your fortes. that being said, i can’t rightly guess what part (if any) he’ll have tomorrow

  8. Gunner4ever, If you think Adebayour had a good game I wish you had been marking my exams when I was in school

  9. @ Gunner4Ever,

Give the boy a break man. Given the kind of game it was, he played decently against Sevilla. Against Villa he only came in in that infamous second half. In the 2nd half it was all Villa and all Arsenal players were busy defending. How can you, in your rightful mind, expect Walcott to do anything in agame like that? I mean not even Ade was realy visible in that second half.

He’s definetely shifting into 2nd gear ifnot 3rd.

  10. Come on guys will all know that Aston Villa’s game was a one half for us. In the first half yes Ade and Eboue both had a good game.

As far as Walcott, I’m pointing out that we beat Eboue, but Walcott although doesn’t act as Eboue….he just takes the ball and run with no aim or goal on mind. Someone with his speed, and a good mind would be able to pull his team in difficult times like this…instead he runs with the ball and every time end up in a cul-de-sac…always…even if we are playing good.

  11. walcott needs games to sort those tendencies out, pure and simple. but like i said newcastle away without key players isn’t the time to use him on the left (maybe partnering ade).

eboue on the other hand started woefully on the right. lacking creativity and often using sagna to create attacks. now he runs at defenders with purpose and occasionally ignores sagna’s runs. he deserves credit (even in the second half). he kept the left back at bay, leaving sagna to deal with young. sagna had enough to do and did reasonably well and that’s b/c of eboue

  12. and by “started woefully” , i meant at the start of the season

  13. I am hoping that the injuries to Hleb, RvP and Cesc are not as bad as we were told, and that AW is actually holding them back for a long and decent run from January onwards. Afterall, Flamini seems to be able to play the role held by Cesc almost seamlessly, while Diarra did the same good job in Flamini’s role. I am sure Rosicky can also play in the hole behind Ade just like Hleb did. And when RvP returns, he can alternate with or play with Ade depending on match situation.

So, all in all, it may not seem so disastrous. let us hope there are no more injuries.

Lehmann? Let him go in January.

  14. Gunner4Ever,

    Stokes is Irish.

But I agree with your point.

  15. i really find it annoying when our fans start to criticize theo walcott. there is no doubt he has improved alot this year. speaking of adebayor and eboue.. sometimes they play 4 or 5 matches in a row and are not involved at all and it seems to be ok, but when theo comes on for 28 mins against a good team like villa peeople say ” oh he didnt play well”. i always thought theo will be a really good player and this season has made me believe in this even more

  16. Sniff, Thanks for the correction.

Maybe I was a bit harsh on Walcott Kid, I guess I’m just frustrated and feel he is progressing with baby steps.

  17. The injuries are becoming a concern but at the same time could clear very quickly. It is however blunting our ability to kill teams off. If Hleb does not make it, Eduardo or Bendtner should partner Ade. I’m not sure we can say Hleb was rushed back, he does have a tendency to pop off with the first sign of a bruise, so who knows how bad his injury genuinely was.

  18. Forgive me for being a little amused by all this – but our boss is shrewd, and my view is he is saving RVP, Cesc, Alex for the ‘big’ games – AV away, we needed Hleb and his decision proved right to play him.

I dont believe they are all as badly injured as we are lead to believe – watch this space for this view!!

Theo – i think he will start with Ade up front, and against a weakened defence he should do well.

    My team for tomorrow

    Almunia

    Sagna, Kolo, Big Willy, Gael

    Eboue, Diarra, Flaminni, Thomas

    Theo & Ade

Jens Lehman is a discrace and for he and Almunia not to be talking proves what a child he is – I hope he goes in January and we bring in a ‘ready made’ good keeper. Oh and a big strong CH for Kolo cover

Have a good day and can’t wait for tomorrows game and now every four – Happy Days

  19. Hleb is clearly now a central figure – and we must get him fully fit for Chelsea and Spurs. Do not underestimate Newcastle- this will be a very hard game- they will be fired up and have been underperforming- if Martins and Emre and N’Zogbia hits form we will have our hands full and will have to defend really well to get anything from the game. Need to play Gilberto and Fab in midfield and Eduardo alongside Ade i.e. 442. Still maybe a draw.

  20. No, he was hacked down by a cynical tackle.

  21. Yogi, you owe us a book title, don’t you?

  22. He got a cut on his achilles from that attack by Carew didn’t he, nothing to do with being rushed back, that’s why he’s only reported as missing the one game

  23. Ade still getting grief i see. What does he have to do for people to get off his back. Granted he wasnt at his best on sat but he scored the winner. This seems to be the way it pans out for him.

great work rate and opens the game up for others to shine = he needs to score more (8 goals in 14 league games)

    or

He scores the winner = ah well he didnt work enough for the team and should have had 1 or 2 more goals.

The man cant win. Ill take his strikerate to the end of the season please – it wouild be a 20+ league season for him then….

  24. According to Arsene, Hleb has also had a recurrence of his hamstring injury which was nothing to do with the tackle.

    YW

  25. Boys & Girls

It seems to me that no one is really looking at the problems that Newcastle have and all you seem to have forgotten when we beat them 2:0 with our reserve team. At the current standing they have big problems at the back. All of you should get a grip and stop moaning about which player did what and what they did not do, I think Diarras passing against Villa was awful and if anyone can prove me wrong then I’m happy to share the video with. Still he did very well and will do better with more play time.

You should support the whole team apart from Lehman yes, and trust Arsene!

  26. Silly question, did you see our performance without him in the 2nd half agaisnt Villa, pivotal he was in the 1st. He was fit, how else could he play like that and we needed him. You cannot control a player being hacked down.

  27. Do not worry he is a worrying and always recovers swiftly from injuries.

  28. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_article_id=499553&in_page_id=1779&ct=5

  29. Actually the Keane and Carew tackles are the opposite ends of the spectrum. Carew’s was a clear hack with no intention of getting the ball – straight red. Keane’s was a fair attempt to get the ball in which he only made contact with the player’s thigh since Muamba went to ground – borderline foul, yellow harsh, red ridiculous.

  30. We shall miss the Hleb-inator. Mark my words. The man is a genius. Without Hleb (and Cesc) there is no one to dictate the tempo of our passing game. It is unfair to expect other players to duplicate their roles as their talents are unique. Diarra and Flamini are not as creative and are not expected to be. Wenger probably has no choice but to thrust Rosicky into the pivot of our midfield but I am not convinced he is a central midfielder. Given Newcastle’s flaky defending the Boss is likely to go 4-4-2 but I expect the Toon to play out of their skins knowing that with a depleted midfield this is probably a good time as ever to pinch a win over the Gunners.

  31. Don think Hleb was rushed back as he was playing without caution in the first half to be a big part in us turning around the scoreline. Wenger knows how importat to us he is and wouldnt risk him being out long term unneadlessly. Bu i think yoou have also got to look at the influence Rosicky had on our play. He is going to be vital now that Hleb and Cesc wont play against newcastle. Hes gotta be the link man between our defence and attack. I fancy Tomas to get a goal against the toon along with Ade

  32. Hackajack

The Keane tackle was as bad as Carew’s; two-footed and reckless. If he got Muamba on the thigh then he missed the ball and fortunately for Muamba, his shins. It’s a red card under the PGMO edict.

The problem is the inconsistency of decision making by officials.

    YW

  33. Cesc might be back for tomorrow! Can anyone confirm?

  34. Can’t agree Yogi. Keane’s wasn’t two-footed, he did get a bit of ball and his foot was sliding along the turf when he contacted Muamba who was going to ground. Contrast Carew who was late, high and had to intention of playing the ball.

  35. Hackajack

We’ll agree to disagree. I don’t think Keane got anything of the ball; Muamba played the ball against his thigh which is why it span upwards rather than being a superbly timed tackle that Keane believes it have been.

    YW

  36. According to Sky Sports News, Flamini, Fabregas and Hleb are all out for tomorrow; the latter two also miss the trip to Middlesbrough on Sunday

    YW

  37. As Arsene says we thought we were overun with midfield players now we are down to the bare bones at Newcastle. It doesn’t need any working out it has to be Eboue Diarra Gilberto and Denilson with Rosicky playing behind Ade if Arsene plays that formation. He could play 4 4 2 and play Eduardo with Denilson on the bench but its more likely he will go with 4 4 1 1. Whoever plays its now going to be a test as the creative dept is not available and a lot of responsibility is going to go on Tomas to bring that to the table tomorrow night. If Newcastle needed a lift its knowing all those players are out, but i still have confidence the boys can do the business.
