The Usual International Break – England Cock It Up And Arsenal Suffer A Few Injuries

There have been many words written about the debacle of England’s qualifying campaign for Euro2008. No doubt the sound of hatches being battened down at Arsenal will be heard for a while for once the braying sheep of the media have finished with the slashing of their knives into McClaren’s back, the sabre rattling will begin about how foreign players have caused the ruination of English football.

The causes of England’s problems are so widespread that the scattergun approach taken with media pot-shots is always going to hit a target. Players who are technically inept, unable to pass their way on anything less than the pristine surfaces of the Premier League, treating the ball as an enemy. Coaches who are devoid of tactical knowledge and do not even have a Plan A, let alone a B or C.

Perhaps the malaise that has set about the native footballers of these shores is best summed up by James Dodson in yesterday’s Fiver,

A retractable roof that doesn’t shut. A £700m field you wouldn’t play rugby on. A manager that is rewarded £2m for underperforming. A man-of-the-match award for Frank Lampard. A standing ovation for David Beckham. An FA chief executive who styles himself on a ginger Charlie Chaplin. Just so I’m clear, the problem with English football is that we have too many foreigners in the Premier League?

The event that sums it all up is the debacle over the National Training Centre in Burton. A grandiose plan foundered on lack of finance. Instead of scaling those plans back to concentrate on the core reason for its existence, the FA Councillors procrastinated to the point of immobility and shied away from making a decision; inertia rules OK. None at the top have the brass balls to make crucial choices and at least one generation will have lost the chance to utilise those facilities before they are built.

Those at the helm will no doubt point out that they have been proactive in terminating McClaren’s contract but that is disingenuous at best. That is a decision which should have never been made in the first place, the indecent haste with which their appointment was made was the folly. It has never been explained successfully why Eriksson’s successor had to be in place before the last World Cup; expediency took on more importance than wisdom.

The choice facing them now is stark. Do they have the courage to sit up and say that they are preparing for the next European Championships as a target, allowing the new coach to bring through the Under-21’s and younger for that qualifying campaign, using the upcoming World Cup campaign for experience, or, will they bow to media pressure and appoint someone who carries on with the current Golden Generation, a misnomer if ever there was one.

For once, I am truly saddened by the lack of Englishmen in Arsene’s squad; if there had been, they would have had all of next summer to rest.

Ahead of the Wigan match, the usual injury woes have struck. According to the official site, Arsene is denied the services of six players. Fabregas was not a surprise given he was suspended and the same applies to Gilberto who will be jetlagged. Disappointingly, RvP has not yet recovered enough to participate although the calls for him to return were premature if they involved the words ’starting’ and ‘line-up’. Indeed according to Arsene, van Persie will not feature against Sevilla either.

It was widely reported that Flamini had picked up a knock or so in the lead up to France’s match on Wednesday although it is reported that he will be out for a week, ‘maximum’. Going to Les Bleus seems to be detrimental to any Arsenal players’ health in recent seasons and Abou Diaby has picked up back-knack and is out as well, for the same period as Hleb, three weeks. Such has been Hleb’s form, he will be missed greatly yet it could give Walcott a chance to push for inclusion from the start in the home games at least. He did well for the Under-21’s in their games this past week and Wigan are likely to be a team undone by his pace as opposed to the strength that Eboue brings to that position.

All of the absences mean that the squad is somewhat patchwork and more likely to resemble a Carling Cup team once past the defence. My initial thoughts would be that Eduardo, Diarra and Denilson will come into a 4-4-2 formation although more will become clear from today’s press conference.

The goalkeepers at the club continue to sound like rejects from The Odd Couple. Jens believes

I have more experience than Almunia, I can cope better with pressure situations and I’m still at the peak of my powers

whilst Manuel reckons

I like to compare myself to a wine which gets better with age

which leaves no-one any the wiser about what the future holds for either.

Gael Clichy is enthused about William Gallas’ captaincy skills, patting him on the back for ‘creating’ the team huddle at the end of matches.

He is a great leader and a great captainHe knows whether to be nice to you or boss you a bit in the game and that’s the best way to lead the team. With his performances too, everyone can see what a great captain he is

Which smoothes the path for his inclusion in the French team in the future, no doubt, although unless Mystic Meg says something about Domenech needing a gale to clear the cobwebs away, it may well be curtains for his international career in the near future?

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Yogi, that summary from James Dodson is a classic! Great stuff.

What I really find incredible is that, despite the England team consistently underachieving for the last 41 years, there still exists a widespread lack of consensus about why there has been no new silverware put on the country’s mantlepiece since 1966, and what needs to be done to change the situation for the better.

That is not a good sign, and I’m beginning to suspect that there is more chance of a British/English sportsman winning Wimbledon, than there is of the England football team winning a major international tournament again.

Perhaps England is paying karmically for sins committed by previous generations, and is destined to keep repeating the same mistakes, over & over & over again, refusing to learn the lessons that matter.

    C’est la vie.

  2. If the next England manager is smart… he will start building the squad around the U21s and also the Arsenal U18s such as Lansbury etc. I.e. people who actually learned from a young age how to pass and move.

  3. After the FA’s bumbling appointment of McClaren, what could be more contemptible than this unseemly dash to disown him once England went out. ‘Emergency Meeting’? The only ‘emergency’ I can see was to put as much distance as possible between blame and their incompetent asses.

  4. HKM and Magichat

Fully agree. The likes of Gerard , Lampard, Sol, etc are just filler ins till the next Euro 2012. I seriously doubt this generation or even those slightly younger , SWP, Nugent, etc will be get England into the next world cup which is 2.5 years away. Why not blood the U 21s and U 17s with a shrew experience manager Capello, Hiddinks etc. Get a few Manu and Arsenal youngsters to be in the core and move on from there. These youngster will not be having egos and delusions about themselves and will be hungry. The whole board should resign including Barwick for their failures. It was not Steve Maclaren who failed alone it was Geof Thompson to Scott Carson , Lampard , and etc.

The whole lot should take responsibility and no a single one including Gerard,et al should not assume that their place in the squad is a given.

Play the youngsters more often. Allow them to fail and learn. More importantly build a team and not a collection of the best players in their positions. But a good manager will know how to do that.

  5. Thers certainly no golden generation coming from the under-21’s, but we have a couple that can join the team. You can’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

I laughed my way through that england game, for once, it was great entertainment so I thank McLaren, more farce please!

I’m not laughing about our injury crisis though, there’s an old Indian saying – No Hleb, No good. We’re going to have enough to beat Wigan, but I expect more questions than answers – first question, can Rosicky step up to the plate, personally I expect little other than an injury during the wigan game.

  6. Sod England.
Our best three players this season have been Fabregas, Hleb, and Van Persie (an argument could be made for Clichy but since the press never mention foreign full backs I won’t either).
So – this weekend is the “test” we’ve been warned about for so long. Can Arsenal cope without our three best players?
If we can’t I will be very surprised indeed.
More of a problem is the subsequent December away matches. Fab will be back and we need RVP straight back on top form – since in my view the success of this team has been built on Hleb more than anyone else over the last month or so (Fab for the opening months) and I am a little worried about how we’ll cope without him.

F*CKING INTERNATIONALS RUINING OUR SQUAD YET AGAIN – WHY DON’T UEFA AND FIFA JUST P*SS OFF AND ABANDON INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL, IT’S FOR HOOIGANS AND PLASTIC FANS ONLY.

  7. England have quality players. They have players playing at the highest level in club football. They also have egos to match and the media to massage those egos. That showed in their attitude in that game.

All the buildup was of now that they got a get out of jail card they had nothing to do but go out and get the draw they needed to see them through. And if they put some effort into it they would beat Croatia and top the group.

Did they all forget the previous game where Croatia beat them. Oh yeah i forgot that was purely down to luck wasn’t it !

Serves them right in my opinion. The players need to have a good look at themselves and realise that being a good player in the league does not mean they will have an easy ride for England and qualify with little or no effort.

The FA also need to address the coaching system in the country. Who next for england boss ? Coppell ? The reason they will look abroad is because most english managers are not as qualified, indeed some have practically no qualifications. Then you have the media blaming the foreign players for their failure – thats rich isnt it. Those players will be going to the tournament while the english ones watch from their tv sets.

Talent + Hard work on the training pitch + Proper coaching from qualified coaches = Potential reached & Success

    not the english model

Talent – Hard work (because im great, just look at my wages) + Substandard, backward thinking coaching (teach the kids to win at all costs, dont worry about trivial things as technique and tactics) = Potential wasted & Inflated Egos & “Why didnt we win that, we did in 66″

  8. Fair points Joel. It looks like the Wigan match will see us tested with a raft of injuries but thereon hopefully players will steadily return. Let’s not let Fergie’s little henchman get the better of us. I suspect Bert will be forced into action. Long haul or not. From now on we’ll see an unsettled first eleven, so those who have been either patiently or impatiently waiting need make no mistakes here. Diarra in particular could do with a big performance on saturday. I won’t mention Rosicky, 90mins will do!

  9. Fuckin internationals injuring our players again. Did you see the casualty list for the wigan game ?
Hleb, Flamini, Cesc, Diaby, VanP and Gilberto all out. Only Cesc isny injuried (thank fuck).

    Team for Wigan ?
    Almunia
    Sagna Kolo Gallas Clichy
    Eboue Denilson Diarra Rosicky
    Ade Edu

    Bench
    Jens, Hoyte, Senderos, Theo, Bentdner

  10. Since we won’t have any participating players to wear out, I suggest we all call for a “Home Internationals” tournament at the same time as Euro2008.

  11. Great post & comments today, YW.

    England
Everything was there to show why I have become totally disillusioned with the national team. The team selection, the jeering of the Croatian national anthem, sporadic support then booing from those wonderful ‘plastic’ England fans, the lumping it up to the big man, although Crouch was the only player worthy of the shirt on the night, Gerrard throwing himself to ground, Lampard gone missing yet ‘man of the match’. Then the knee jerk emergency early morning meeting, when they have got 9 months to take a rational decision.

I had thought we might as well keep McClaren but his team selection put paid to that for me. Despite the evidence that England are better with either Lampard or Gerrard- he had to play both, so there was no support for Crouch, thus making the hoofing tactic threat less.

England, like Arsenal & Man U, have to get quality in the side even if it is inexperienced. Take a bit of short to medium term pain & grow a team, keeping it to a fairly exclusive squad of 22, where caps are not as cheap as they have been for a number of years.

Will that happen, with the FA & our media, what do you think?

    Arsenal
Great to be damaged by the internationals again.

Team: Almunia; Sagna, Kolo, Gallas, Clichy; Eboue/Walcott, Denilson, Diarra, Rosicky; Ade, Walcott/Denilson.

We will need a big one from Tommy.

I don’t like top against bottom games, especially in November after internationals , with a new manager watching.

Respect & the correct motivation will be key.

Hope the little one survived yesterday, YW.

  12. That was meant to be Walcott/ Eduardo up front.

  13. Magneto will you stop with that “C’est la vie” foreign talk. That’s what got this blog into the mess you see today.

  14. Well Said Flint

I didn’t even realise Lampard was playing until the the Penalty.

And like you I lost interest in England years ago and I wasn’t that gutted on the night. And until there are radical changes on the pitch and in the FA I cant see myself getting back into it.

You can see already that they will struggle to find a quality replacement. All the best ones are already managing international teams and have something to do next Summer. Those that are capable and are available are ruling themselves out. Mourinho and O’Neil are expected to do that today.

And why now Mourinho, the press have been slating his style of play for the last few years, now they want him to manage it. Would it be any different for England? I am not so sure but given the rest of the candidates he is unfortunately probably the best of a bad bunch.

As for Arsenal, I think Gilberto will start at the weekend and probably wants to start. Hopefully alongside Denilson. hopefully Eduardo will get a chance up front. Playing a bottom three side at home is surely the perfect game to give him experiece.

Almunia, Sagna, Kolo, Gallas, Clichy, Eboue, Gilberto, Denilson, Rosciky, Ade and Eduardo

Bench to include Bendtner (who is scoring for Denmark again), Diarra and Walcott

  15. I’m getting used to Englands disrespect of other peoples national anthems now.Never seen it done by any other country, to my knowledge.Low class .Thankfully I won’t run into those fans next year.Mind you, I’ve never seen anyone turn on their own players like England fans so why should I be suprised yet again that our anthem is destroyed.I can’t even understand what kind of people these are, I don’t know anyone like that. It’s only a minority but it’s your fans who represent your country so that’s all people see.The players must be embarrassed.
Anyway, looking fwd to normal football again and an easy win this weekend.

  16. I think Gilberto will be saved for Seville because of the jet lag.

Who can England appoint, with any pedigree now?

If they want a quick fix then they should bite Capello’s hand off but I cannot see him lasting the 8 years or so to really take us on.

Perhaps the answer is a progressive quality but inexperienced young manager who can also learn with his team. Bilic seems to have done ok.

The problem will always be this totally unrealistic & unrelenting pressure on any England team by people who just do not understand the game.

  17. Flint

If they want someone quickly, Lippi would be a better bet. Mourinho ought to be appointed though for his playing style is throwback to the even drearier days of the 1970’s. On the pitch, it wouldl, at least, seem like a step up from now.

    YW

  18. I was just praying, please done boo the croat anthem – and they did – f*cking morons. typical blo*dy english fans are a total embarrasment to England. I was kind of happy for Croatia to win and knock England out. I felt happy for them. I wonder if the england players will now take stock and really think about why they are under -performing, or whether they will still think they were just unlucky. probably the latter. I was hoping this result would force the media and FA and other English to really think about what the real problems are. this is a time to be wise. However, all I am seeing, is even more knee jerk hysteria, foreigner blaming attitude than ever before. With that attitude England will only get worse in the future not better.

I really want to see EDS start tomorrow. I think he is class. its probably his last real chance before RVP returns. If Gilberto is to be sold in January (as the papers are saying) then I hope he does not play tomorrow. I’d rather us use a player who is going to be here for a long time then one leaving soon. Diarra could gain useful experience in a relatively easy fixture. I also think he is a better player than Gilberto.

  19. and looking forward, I would not even take Rosicky to Seville. he needs wrapping in cotton wool before our visit to Villa. he is great for one game a week but two games is too much for his legs. Use walcott or Eduardo on the wing/up front with Eboue on the other. Of course, Cesc will play in Seville, probably with Gilberto.

  20. I think an in-experienced manager would only work with a National squad without the Ego’s. That is why Bilic does so well with Croatia. I think it would be a different story with England.

It is an unfortunate situation to be faced with, but when the FA come up with the short list, they have to ask themselves

If the Arsenal, or Man Utd or Barcelona or Real Madrid Manager post become available, would this candidate be considered

This then leads onto does he have experience of Managing so-called top drawer players that have the ego’s to match and if so has he succesfully managed them.

One other possibility (That might get shot down) is, does anyone know when world cup qualification start. if it is post Euro 08, would it be worth hanging on for a suitable candidate after the tournament?

Richard I know you are Croatian and well done the other night, Croatia played really well and it is a shame that certain individuals treated your anthem in that way. I lived and worked in Trogir a few years ago and loved the Croatian hospitality. Maybe if those idiots had have respected it, the Croatian fans would not have cheered so loudly and the players would not have given that extra 20% to show those idiots.

  21. This booing of national anthems is a big issue for me.

I don’t recall any concerted effort from the the FA, Uefa or Fifa or even the dear old BBC to stop this.

There should be a public warning that the England players will forfeit the match if it happens.

Their solution seems to be to have someone, who should be nowhere near a football pitch, singing at a huge volume so that the TV audiences cannot hear our disgrace.

  22. My point about the young manager is that it would be mainly the young players & those who can lose their egos who would get in the squad.

  23. Sorry Flint

Missed that bit in your post. The ego thing does need sorting, and you are right, the best time to do that is when the players are at u-21,18 level.

I wonder if the likes of Lansbury will pick up on the senior squad. Apart from Mad Jens, we seem to have a level-headed squad and maybe the foreign element there will have a positive effect on our young English players. I think you can already see that in Theo

  24. Lads, we’re arsenal. Let the FA sort out there own mess. I think Dodsons quote says it all really.
    Team to play Wigan……..

    Almunia
    Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy
    Eboue, Diarra, Denilson, Rosicky
    Eduardo and Ade.

Sub: Gilberto, Lehmann, Bentdner, Senderos and Theo.

So Fabregas’s needless booking turns out to be not so smart after all. And I remember some depressed bloggers earlier in the season cursing Wenger for his over abundance of central midfielders. It seems not only is Wenger an astroid but he can also see the future!!

  25. I dont know dublgun, i’d still rather cesc miss this one than say Villa or Newcastle away. I have seen the squad reported as this:
Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Eboue, Denilson, Diarra, Rosicky, Walcott, Adebayor, Lehmann, Bendtner, Song, Hoyte, Traore, Eduardo, Randall.

No Gilberto in there. from the order of the names (if there is anything in that at all) it would appear that Ade and Walcott will be strikers while EDS will have to take his place on the bench once more. Interesting to see Englishman Randall in the squad. would be good to see him even for the last few minutes just to give the media something to think about.

  26. Wow, David Beckham’s talking sense. See skysports.com for what he said about the influx of foreign players NOT to be blamed for England’s failures – “excuse” he said. Fair play to him.

  27. Bloody internationals well at least there’s none for a good few months to get in the way of the real. Aside from the injuries some decent performances by our boys and a standout performance by Bendtner who scored one and created two.

    Almunia
    Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy
    Eboue, Diarra, Denilson, Rosicky
    Eduardo and Ade

Sounds like the ticket, Gilberto will be jetlagged and if the press are to be believed (when are they ever!) it looks like Gilberto is going in January, anyway I’d think Diarra should get some games under his belt sooner rather than later. Similarly Eduardo needs the games also, perhaps no more than Walcott but Theo’s need maybe isn’t as great as Eduardo’s.

  28. Whilst I may or may not have as much interest in the national team as the next man\woman I come to this sight to see and discuss all things Arsenal. (Full Stop)

So please Yogi and everyone less of the discussion of the nation teams plight. I won’t say I don’t care but …

  29. Louisa, I think being a hypocrite needs a degree of intelligance so dissing foreign players whilst playing in the States would probably be a bridge to far for Becks.

It’ll be a sad day when Gilberto leaves arsenal but it something we’ve become accustomed to over the last few years. Diarra looks ready made to step in there. Hopefully Flamini won’t suffer too much due to Le’ curse of the French national team. He deserves to retain his place on return from injury unless Diarra plays a couple of blinders (which looks ominous considering the last few times I’ve watched him play).
Great oppurtunity for Denilson too. I like his attitude. No rumblings about moving if he don’t get a game. Spot on.

  30. Alex Hleb as been very crucial to our league topping. He has, with Fabregas, the engines to our outstanding perfomance. I dont know how we will cope without them, I hope they will be ok on the chelsea game all.

  31. I would personally play Theo and EDS –

GK and Defence the usual –

Mid – Theo Diarra Denilson Rosicky

    EDS and Ade up front.

We are playing Wigan – no need to hold back.

I think now is the time we see what Diarra is about – really looking forward to seeing him play tomorrow – he has looked impressive so far.

  32. This talk about foreign players is not only wide of the mark but dangerous. According to the press and apparently half of the league clubs in England the problem is the lack of English players playing at the highest level ie Premiership football. However this is not the highest level of club football, the Champions leaugue is.

Does anyone really think that England will be able to hold on to its 4 CL places if we limit the number of foreign players to 5?

What would happen is that we would lose the number of places afforded to us and this means less English players not more experiencing CL football plus the Premier league would suffer.

    Just what we need!

  33. Will the FA go for an english manager or will they go foreign. Surely all those foreigners are ruining the english game …..

  34. Predictable, the fat git’s kicked it off…

    http://tinyurl.com/35llg3

  35. The lead-ins for the England-Croatia match showed videos of Boban kicking a policeman who had been beating a Dynamo Zagreb supporter, highlights of a World Cup match in which Croatia beat Germany (in which Bilic featured in defense), and clips of Klansnic trying to carry on with his career after kidney transplantation. It was pretty clear that Croatia’s team ethos was going to be a problem for England and that, should England lose, the message should be that England footballers have a lot to learn from foreigners.

  36. Interesting article on Cesc and Charlie George on the Daily Mail. Quite funny too.

  37. Cheers Patthegooner
I can honestly say I wasn’t jumping up and down after the win.I was shocked England didn’t make it and truly upset that my mates team hadn’t made it.The booing is what it is I guess, there are jerks everywhere and you can’t control them.I know the Croatian team had been thinking about it and that’s why they’ve gone a bit over the top with this result.Corluka probably should just shut up or he’ll be targeted. In the papers back home the players are saying that the English players constantly taunted them and their abilities and were saying that they crap.So it just fired them up even more.No way Russia is the second best team in the group but I said all along that some of the teams in the group had their best squads in a decade.Croatia, Russia, Israel and Macedonia all had good new teams on the way up.England had to have their best 11 on the pitch to get through this group, and it just didn’t happen that often.when you did you beat teams easily. But the depth when you have to change a handful of players just isn’t quite there.I’m shocked really but I knew we’d put a good show in.Even more shocking was seeing tiny Luka Modric knock gerrard out of the way a couple of times. He really is going to be a great player. That pitch didn’t suit good play so I was pretty happy with what he showed and I’d love Arsenal to get him but it looks like chealsea might. No way I’d pay what they’re asking but he’s a very special talent.England needs a player like that in the middle. You can run all day but you need to be able to beat players so the opposition is put in two minds. It was just too easy for our guys to play against 3 similar players in Gerrard, lamps and Barry.I’d rather play against those guys than Hleb any day.he’d be a nightmare for defenders.
Anyway, bummer Englands out but this has to be the kick your team needs.A modern coach with fresh ideas and someone with the courage to pick players on form and add the excitement of youth.Don’t be scared to put some flair players in either. You can have your hargreaves out back but have guys who are singleminded on attack.
I think a foreign coach may be the answer because he’ll get past the egos and stake his rep on performance alone. He’ll have to keep some of these guys but introduce the youngs and agbonlahors and walcotts immediately. They’re ready to step up so give them a chance.Mclaren was just too defensive and void of fresh ideas. And don’t play 4-5-1 at home FFS.It was too easy to mark a lone striker.Almost every coach on the planet plays 4-4-2 0r 4-3-3 nowdays.
And beckham for me can still offer something. He was the one player croatia hoped wouldn’t play and Bilic made no secret of that.Bilic was laughing when he saw he wasn’t playing cause he knew that threat of delivery and set pieces wouldn’t be there, so they took players down in the first half. They only did it once or twice the second half.
You’ll bounce back a much better side for this.My best mate at work from the Isle of Wight said all week he wanted England out for the sake of the country. He still feels the same way.Weird but I see his point now.
Cheers.Like to see eds today but he really needs to step up now.he’s not the player I know he can be so maybe yesterday gave him a jump.
