Blatter Hates Us, Everyone Else Loves Us

Yes, you lot. Sepp Blatter hates you.

One day you’ll say we don’t want a national team, then okay you’ll follow Arsene Wenger

Oh bugger. Me as well. Arsenal it is then. Blatter’s problem is not necessarily with Arsene’s footballing philosophy, more that his success is deemed to be detrimental to the English National team as there are no players in his side in the starting XI for the country.

Yet that does a disservice to Wenger. The England team will benefit in the long term simply because he is raising the standards required at club level. Young English players know that if he signs them or brings them through the ranks then they have the technical ability to play at any level, in any team, anywhere in the world. It is the failing of the FA and the coaching set-up that there are probably only five of Steve McClaren’s squad who are good enough technically to play for Arsenal. Those players? Richards, Rooney, Ferdinand, Gerrard and possibly Joe Cole. That this is the sum total of the ‘best’ that England can offer is a damning indictment of the state of English football not of Arsene Wenger’s methodologies.

Taking the line-up on Sunday, at either full or younger levels, I can think of only one who does not make his national squad on a regular basis: Almunia. The rest are always away on international duty when qualifying matches and tournaments, or when the seemingly endless round of turgid friendlies takes place. Wenger owes nothing to the England team. His duty is to Arsenal Football Club. Given that is the case, Blatter’s comments are, as per usual, ill-conceived and even by his standards, well wide of the mark, reminiscent of a John Jensen shot. And I have not even started on about the incompetence that is the only common theme about FIFA under Blatter….

Following on from Sunday’s performance, friend and foe have been praising Arsenal. Jamie Carragher lifted his head long enough from the patch of four-leaf clovers and horseshoes that he currently inhabits to say,

Are Arsenal as good as people say they are? You’d better believe it, I thought they had 12 men out there

whilst his boss believes that Arsene has forged ‘one of the best teams in England and Europe’.

William Gallas is being widely misquoted this morning, the headlines scream ‘Title rivals are scared of us’ when in fact he said,

Maybe Liverpool were a little bit afraid of us, and a lot of teams will be afraid again

The inference in the headline is a tad different to the substance. He commented,

We’re playing very well, can score goals at any time, yet can also play a physical game as well

Isolating United and Chelsea as the ‘true’ rivals that the club have for the title race, he observed,

Three or four teams can win, but they will be the most difficult two teams to beat. We will not change our style and play football all the way. It’s really important for us to play good football and give something to the supporters. We have good players who are young and like to play football. Sometimes they play too well, but I’m very pleased to be in this team.

If they can win things playing this sort of football, I doubt that there will be many complaints from us either other than the habitual knocking of individuals who could score a hat-trick in every game and still be dismissed as worse than useless.

According to The Daily Mirror, Gilberto has been complaining about everything under the sun. Here is the best quote that they have,

Aah. There were none. So it’s all about ragtag and bobtail ‘journalism’ disguised as supposition and rumour. Apparently, Arsene has delivered an ‘amazing Carling Cup snub’ to Gilberto after he ‘refused’ to play centre half and is ‘no longer willing’ to do so in the future.

Back to the proper stuff. Bob Wilson has been praising Fabregas to the hilt in this morning’s Daily Telegraph, describing the mercurial midfielder as having

Dennis’s [Bergkamp] brain, the combativeness and touch of Patrick Vieira, the marauding spirit of Rocastle and Thomas, and the magic wand of Liam Brady’s left foot, only in his right boot. I can’t praise him enough; he’s up there with the best of them.

Wilson continued

It reminded me of what Arsene Wenger said three years ago when I was just finishing my time as goalkeeping coach with Arsenal. He told me: “I have seen the best 17-year-old player I’ve ever seen.” Well, it was an extraordinary statement for Arsene to make. I remember saying: “But wasn’t Pele the best 17-year-old?” “I am telling you about a player who plays in a different role to Pele; Pele was a striker, not a creator.”

High praise indeed and deserved of his performances since coming into the first team, standards rising each season.

The Telegraph is having a tad of a love-in with the Spaniard with Don Howe praising him to the hilt, comparing Fabregas favourably with Paul Scholes, something that both the player and his manager have done in the past. Howe’s praise though is not limited to the Spaniard, Flamini and Hleb are recognised as being core elements of the teams success this season,

Of the Frenchman he writes,

He has been playing so well in the midfield anchorman role in front of the back four that he has even managed to dislodge Gilberto Silva from Arsenal’s 1st XI, for the time being anyway. His presence gives Fabregas the freedom to drive forward.

There is little doubt that Flamini is head and shoulders above everyone else in the ‘Most Improved Player’ stakes this season at the club in that the consistency of his performances is unexpected. Previously, he has played well for a couple of games and then been a fish out of water, no doubt hindered mentally by knowing he would make way for Gilberto when the Brazilian returned or through being played out of position; he is not a natural wide midfielder through either lack of guile or a lack of confidence in his own ability.

I am not sure who gets the higher praise when Howe says of Hleb that ‘he reminds me of the mercurial Barcelona and Argentina player Lionel Messi‘. Howe likes the way that the Belorussian ‘because of the sublime way he runs with the ball and his desire to take defenders on‘. It is becoming apparent that Fabregas and Hleb are the fulcrum upon which the side is built but for the latter, it is almost a triumph of good over evil, converting unbelievers to his cause.

Perhaps people will bear this in mind in the current bout of criticism coming Adebayor’s way. I read in the comments yesterday that he is apparently not good enough because he has only scored in three of seven games. My question to that is how many forwards score have a better ratio of games in which they have scored to those played this season? Ian Wright raised the bar in the scoring stakes and Henry took it higher yet Adebayor is neither. He is not the thirty goals a season man that some crave nor is the team geared to that. Having had two seasons of relying on one player to score, Arsene had to break that mentality and the benefit is being seen through a number of players scoring rather than goals being the sole preserve of one player.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. The only problem is still the striker position. We don’t have anyone with the skill to make use of all the chances we create. MANU will be another tough battle with limited chances. MANU rarely miss their chances. Are we going to waste the few opportunities that will come our way again? Who is the striker available to take of our chances? We need to pray.

  2. Howard

    Glass half-empty this morning, eh?

In recent weeks, United have done exactly what we have been doing namely punishing poor sides. The striker position is not a big problem; goals are coming from elsewhere. In the same way we are not invincible, neither are they. And why, pray tell, are ‘few opportunities’ going to come our way?

    YW

  3. Ade is not playing well in a team that’s playing very well. Put Ade in say Everton and he would be their best player every game.

In a team where movement is so fluid and crisp and easy to the eye, Ade is very clumsy. Heck, he was born that way, always clumsy, like Kanu, but with a talent to be a nuisance to other’s defence. That’s why RvP, Hleb and Fabregas can benefit from partnering Ade. That’s why if we had RvP against Liverpool, we would have won.

  4. Fitness is the key issue for us against Fergie’s team. Adebayor’s especially. He looked kind of out of it at Anfield and I hope he’s fully replenished come Saturday. In all fairness though he does seem to play well against Man U.

Fab4 & Stereohlebs13 will be marked men from now on so again freshness is key.

I hope Rosicky returns to form asap ’cause he is terribly terribly important for ensuring the attacking-midfield retains the “ruthless-ambiguity” that baffles opponents. If he’s not up for it Gilberto & Flamini should both play to reduce the defensive duties of Fab & Stereo, with Diaby or Diarra ready to come on if alteration’s required.

I hope the Sheffield Utd game goes very well for our 2nd string’s enthusiasm & morale. Having that to play for is vitally important forEVERYONE at the club.

    We wait & we wonder….

  5. I agree with Arsenal fans world wide. sepp Blatter needs to answer the following questions:-

    A) Where does Theo Walcott come from?
    B) If Blatter cares about FIFA and national football so much, then he will take due care to note that in the recent Under-18s World Cup, Arsenal had more players than any other club
    C) Blatter should learn that nationality is not a pre-cursor to quality. It is not axiomatic that a player should simply be picked on nationality as opposed to merit. Only a racist fool would come out with such claptrap. Wha a ridiculous notion to spread. No wonder England is replete with imbeciles like Pennant, Bentley et al., who believe that by virtue of being English they should be picked.
    D) Blatter should shut the fuck up and realize that he is talking to one of the biggest managers in world football and somebody with general respect. He has respect from nobody and has been exposed for being a corpulent kleptocrat who wanted to hold World Cups every 2 years and has made a mockery of international football by awarding FIFA World Player awards based on whoever endorses the most commercial activities. Pathetic.
    E) I hope Arsene hits back and hits back hard.

  6. Wow, Ade world-beater one week, not top notch the next. Howard why don’t you stick to targeting one weak link at a time. Ade was sensational against Rio last year and simply on fire two short weeks ago. Guess what? Arsene is rightly going to keep the faith and Ade will put one average performance behind him. We have the strikers Howard, that’s why we’re top of the league both domestically and in Europe! Lavish praise for Fab and he also was below par against Liverpool. Anyway, they will both play well!

  7. I am seriously concerned at splatter’s public and personal attack on AW.

As I have stated many, many times, splatter and his mates have a huge conflict of interest.

I despise people who want to lower the general standard so that their agenda/product looks better, and that’s exactly what splatter and his ilk are trying to do, it’s NOT for the good of football.

That is why I want these people thrown out on their ears.

I am seriously worried about the consequences of this for Arsenal. I think these clowns are as dodgey as the day is long, and we’ve seen more than a few questionable performances by referees in the past (any wonder why they don’t like video reviews?).

I am seriously concerned that they would not hesitate to cheat to prevent Arsenal winning the title.

  8. A great article, thanks. But I do agree with the criticism of Ade. I was at the Sunderland match and for the first 15 minutes I thought that he was going to show me how wrong I was. However, after that he became either anonymous or barely useful.
Against Liverpool he was almost a problem. His first touch was poor with no control…. he constantly returned the ball without trying to use it, he made no attempt to beat his man, and his dreadful return pass to Kolo Toure was symptomatic of his play. He does not lead his line, he is just not up to the standard of the rest of the team, and I for one would be happy to see Bendtner given a run out for several matches to see how he beds in.
He seems to be constructive when he has he ball, he certainly is a goal scorer, both with his feet and head, and he creates a level of panic in defences.

  9. The annoying thing about that Blathering Blatter is that Arsenal had the highest number of players at last year’s world cup. More than Barca, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Man Utd.

How is that killing international football?

  10. I was steaming mad when I read Blatter’s comments – how dare he make this a personal attack on Arsene? His proposal will not improve the England team, it will just weaken club football. Surely the Human Rights Act and the EU employment law will stop this nonsense in it’s track?

I see the Ade knockers are back already. They have such short memories – they must love the taste of humble pie because they will be eating more soon.

  11. It kills international football because club football, as played by Arsenal, is a far better product.

In the last year or three, more and more fans have been negative about these international “breaks”, which is a huge flashing red light for this fat, sweaty, oxygen thieves.

So, instead of trying to improve their own product, and conduct themselves in a more reasonable and fair manner, they are trying to use their power to destroy a rival product.

One which they for some absurd reason, actually hold authority over.

It’s time splatter and his ilk were thrown out of football, there is no place for these clowns and their rampant self-interest in the beautiful game.

  12. Blatter really does talk out out of his arse sometimes doesnt he. Rather than take a proper look at the issues effecting international football and trying to fix that he blames the club game. Tosser

  13. I’ve been reading this blog for a few weeks now, must say I’m impressed by the quality of the write-ups & comments (I look forward to reading this site every morning, these days).

Very good point about every Arsenal player being away on national duty. Does Blatter have a problem with players from small countries like Belarus & Togo playing in a better league & improving their respective country’s chances at national level tournaments?! When did he start heading the FA instead of FIFA?

Anyways, leaving that bloke to be barking on one side, the site has been having a very interesting discussion about who should play up front & its seems to be divided between Ade Vs EDS/NB at the moment which I’m not sure which way to join but I sure like the future where its NB & Walcott, which (if NB is patient enuf) would be world betting duo to finish of the creative moves of Fab, Hleb, Ros, etc. Then we can say bring on TH14, Eto, Ron & Messi & watch the match end with a scoreline of 7-4 in our favor?! I got too ahead of myself?! Coming back to the present, I hope we win this wkend & put an end to any lingering doubt in anyone’s mind (ours & the opponents) that we are a force…not just in the league but in CL as well.

  14. According to the BBC.

Arsenal (from): Fabianski, J Hoyte, Toure, Song, Traore, Eboue, Denilson, Diarra, Diaby, Walcott, Bendtner, Mannone, Eduardo, Lansbury, G Hoyte, Merida.

Eboue? Kolo Toure? And no Gilberto? That’s a very strange squad…

  15. What do the bbc know, they pulled that from the telegraph who pulled it from the mirror….

  16. Am I the only one that is neither an Ade knocker nor Adephile? Surely most of us are somewhere in between. We can see the excellent hold up play, the great potential (those goals against Spuds) to be a world class striker and yet we are also able to be howlingly frustrated when he looks out of place in the team, miss placing passes missing seemingly easy chances.
I wonder if it’s his position which attracts such polar extremes of opinion? Keepers and centre forwards stand out like blind cobbler’s thumbs when they screw up don’t they?
We all love Fab but it was after all his error (poor control of all things) that gave Liverpool their free kick – no one shouts at him, but then I suppose, in his defence he is breathtakingly brilliant .

  17. But if Toure does play and Bert does not then its not a good sign for bert’s future. He should have played. he needs games and to show that he still has a hunger for this team. If Toure is willing to play then why not Gilberto?
we dont know why Bert has been excluded from the squad though, but even just looking at team selections recently Bert has certainly lost his place in the team and I really dont see him getting it back from a man 7 years his junior. Diarra is sniffing for a start and I think wenger really wanted Bert to play centre back. But Bert is not playing ball and I assume he wants to remain in midfield. thats Bert’s choice and fair enough, so no doubt he will leave soon. But should that happen, we need to buy a centre back in soonish. I am sorry but I still dont really trust Song to come through and be a first choice defender for us in years to come (or more importantly this season) and we should not simply have players in our squad who are there for CC games. Either Song is good enough to play away at Man u in the league or he isn’t.
Gallas has probably one more season at the top and the others are too young so a centre back is still top of my wish list come the summer.

  18. I don’t know, the BBC is usually the only site that puts all the squads before matches, it would be strange if they were inventing this.

  19. Seems like Ade has no “fan credits” built up where a bad game or 2 or a mistake in a game is written off because hes been great for 10.

  20. HEY GUYS
A CULTURED LEFT FOOT HAS BEEN ELECTED AS THE BEST BLOG OF ENGLKISH FOOTBALL
See the ranking blogs in the spanish
    http://elhacha.wordpress.com/2007/10/30/ranking-blogs-futbol-octubre-2007/
    Congratulations

  21. Mike,
I share most of your views regarding Blatter etc., except it is surely a bit far fetched for Fifa to launch an on field conspiracy against us- or is it?

Sadly, I think you are right about Gilberto, Gazzap.

I think if he has a long term future with us he will need to be prepared to play CB, which could prolong his career. In my opinion he can make an excellent CB.

However he is unlikely to play CB for Brazil, so he could be thinking about his international situation.

What has happened is Flamini is more of a tackler than Gilberto & even if he is not as good a player, speeds our play up. Diarra & Denilson appear to be the same, so I would imagine that is the way AW wants to go. It has been working.

Song is making a lot of progress, if the Newcastle game is anything to go by, but we should know more after tomorrow’s game.

We really don’t want Kolo to play at Sheffield but the Hoytes could be a bit small to counter their likely aerial bombardment tactics.

  22. I am going to say it upfront. I am not at all happy Kolo is playing in the Carling Cup. Yes we may want to prolong our participation to give the likes of Diarra , Edu and Brendther a run of games but looking at our squad especially in the CBs we are very thin. And we need Kolo for the rest of the season for the Premier League and CL. He is also going for the ACN. So he would be playing too many games if he plays in the CC. If he gets injured before Djorou can come back then we will be severely undermanned in the CB position. My stand for the CC is that if the second strings can get by without too much involvement from the first team then fine if not there is already the FA cup and injuries for them to get some action. We need to be more focus in our use of resources. If Bert is not prepared to play ball and play in the CB then we are even thinner than now.

Yes we need a good CB this Jan and also a natural Left wing if we are to go all the way this season. Injuries is like Murphy’s Law it will happen.

  23. I’m not sure Seppy has something against arsenal, I just think he is happy to bitch about anything that comes up. We only hear his comments about English clubs but does anyone know if he slags off other countries as well? I bet he does.

Hopefully our younguns will perform in the CC cup tie, but I doubt it will convince many here of our depth. I really can’t believe that some are still calling for more players when we have a great crop of youngsters waiting for their chance, who have been trained in the ‘Wenger ways’.

But I also think AW should watch Gilberto carefully. While he might be a really nice gentle guy on the outside, he has the eyes of a dormant psychopath. I have no doubt that if rubbed the wrong way, he’d show up at your place in the middle of the night with a hacksaw, a carbattery and a few meat hooks for payback.

  24. Not suprised to see Eboue he needs time at RW to adjust so this is the perfect foil, 20 – 45 minute run out me thinks.

I thought he stepped his game up in the position at Liverpool he has been poor to average beforehand whereas at Liverpool he was borderline good.

  25. Gazzap its quoted in several papers that ilberto and AW have fallen out and Bert refused to play CB`position for the Sheffiled game. If this is true his da are numbered, but with Djouru on loan big Phil injured it really is risky to play Toure in the CC, if Toure or Gallas gets injured and Bert refuses to play CB we lost with the much improved but not tested Song,

Unattractive talking of eyes have you looked at EDS his squint is fearful.

  26. If you add Blatter’s comments to Platini’s comments it is not surprising that people feel that AW is on UEFA and FIFA hit lists. The point is that as a football strategist, philosopher and economist he beats both organisations and their representatives into a cocked hat.

  27. The BBC is often wrong about team selection, so I would wait until it’s officially announced. I hope it’s not true that Gilberto has refused to do his part for the team, but if so it’s a real shame both from his and our point of view.

YW, you can add Platini to the list of people who hate us. He’s now joined in the criticism of Arsene. They must be really fear his influence to be targetting him this way. After all his product speaks for itself.

  28. From Arsenal.com

Wenger – There’s no rift with Gilberto, he’ll play at Sheff Utd

    By Richard Clarke

Gilberto will play for Arsenal at Sheffield United on Wednesday.

Media reports had suggested the Brazilian midfielder would not feature in the Carling Cup tie after refusing to play at centre half at Bramall Lane.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online on Tuesday afternoon, Wenger vehemently refuted such a suggestion.

“I deny that categorically, and I find this assessment disrespectful to a great professional like Gilberto,” said the manager. “He is 100 per cent professional and is in the squad for tomorrow. He will play.

“I believe that as a manager and as a player you always have one thing in your mind and that is what is good for the club and the team. I cannot fault Gilberto on that since he arrived here.

  29. I really hope Kolo doesn’t play, he always seems to be forced to play Carling Cup games and will get very tired again soon enough. Gallas could play if we need experience – shouldn’t a captain be leading the team in all competitions anyway?

  30. Good article Yogi.

Blatter (and FIFA for that matter), are scared – terrified in fact. Their biggest fear is that their one weapon, exclusion of countries from the world cup, loses its sting.

They have to fight to keep other power centers from becoming too powerfuoo – the most natural place for that power to reside, after all, is in the hands of the large clubs, since they have access to the best and most valuable (as well as to the richest fans).

To the extent these clubs allow it, they “lend” some of their power/wealth to their national associations to help with a league (England in this respect is better than most since TV revenue is shared, unlike, say, Italy), and also to Eufa for the same reasons.

It all basically resembles a game of chicken. The big clubs threaten now and again to form a super league. Eufa threatens to severe ties with Fifa (after all, could not the European Championship plus Argentina and Brazil basically be considered the world cup?), and Fifa constantly try to threaten countries with exclusion from the WC.

Blatter, then, really needs to weaken the power of these big clubs, because as money keeps concentrating in 10-15 big clubs in europe, he runs a big risk that they will eventually feel powerfull enough to organize themselves. WHat, after all, si to stop the G14 of big clubs from organizing their own World competition? After all, it is mostly THEIR players who will play in it! And then they keep all the revenue (with some going to the national associations….

  31. Good old Auntie BBC.

It seems they have published a ‘made up’ squad + provided Platini with the platform to spout his, possibly well meaning but naive, rant against football’s progress.

Blatter & Platini, within days, having a direct go at AW, does strengthen the conspiracy theory. The little Englanders at the BBC must be joyous to join in.

  32. I doubt Kolo has to be forced to play.

My guess is they would all love to play at the moment.

I would imagine Kolo & Cesc have to be saved from themselves.

  33. We are 1 of he biggest forces in the world at the momnt, the premier league is the best league in the world hands down and if we can top the league then i find it hard to believe that there can be many teams to match us at the moment.

  34. FIFA and UEFA hate England. have done for a while, but I think they know England is a major force of world football, mainly due to the premier league. they want to reduce that influence. they also want the national team to become weaker, despite what they have said about more english players needed in all teams. They know full well that if they force that through, the premier league and the standard of players will in fact drop not increase. that would mean the league will be less attractive and attract less TV money thus being less of a world power than it is now. It will mean that foreign players are far more likely to stay within their own country. I dont really know why they target Arsenal and not Man U or chelsea. I dont know whether they are ignorant of the truth about our academy or whether they have some ulterior motive to try and kill Arsenal. Blatter and Platini cannot be trusted and I feel are in cahoots with each other. This is a very bad situation and they will continue moving the goal posts until English football has been weakened.

  35. The G.14 will not agree to any of Platini or Blatters proposals, and neither wil the EU overturn the free movement of players.

Lets hope Gilberto is captain tomorrow night.

  36. Very long blog today

  37. The thing that really annoys me about this whole blatter thing is that Arsene was asked a question by a reporter on the issue and gave an honest answer, nothing more.

Yet Blatter has chosen to paint Wenger as some petition-waving madman who’s pushing an agenda of axeing internationals, which is just a ludicrous thing to do and completely untrue. It really drives me mad.

I can’t see Wenger responding to this directly, though i’m sure he’ll be asked another question on the subject by a journalist soon enough “Arsene, Sepp Blatter says…”. He’s unlikely to start an argument with Blatter though, because Wenger’s already won the fight – there’s simply no way it’ll pass a challenge in any EU court. Maybe something could get through relating to non-EU players, but considering the bulk of Arsenal’s (and most other clubs’) players are EU-nationals, this really isn’t going to make any difference. And Carlos Vela has already demonstrated that Wenger’s got his contingency on this in place already.

Btw – If you don’t subscribe to Arsenal TV Online and watch Arsene’s press conferences, I can’t recommend them enough (I don’t work for them!).
