Point Taken…

Liverpool 1 – 1 Arsenal

1 – 0 Gerrard (7)
1 – 1 Fabregas (80)

..but two dropped.

That is in the cold light of day how the result feels. For all of the character shown in retrieving a deficit through seventy minutes of constant pressure, composure in front of goal would have led to a comfortable victory. A warning has been served though that the team is not the powder-puff that many pundits seemed to think beforehand.

It was overall a decent performance, lacking the cutting edge in the business end of the pitch. Adebayor chose to have an ‘off’ day with a touch that was extremely heavy and foraging the lonely plough he only had one good opportunity to score, Reina saving well. The rest of the time, he worked hard on his own until joined by Bendtner.

In midfield, the passing patterns worked but the ball was invariably surrendered when faced with the seven to ten defenders Liverpool had in place for the majority of the match. It has been a long time since we have gone to Anfield in the League and totally dominated possession to the extent that the hosts were forced backwards constantly.

The pressure told in the end with Fabregas taking his shot early and wrong footing Reina. Hleb had been industrious all afternoon with little reward but he held the ball and waited for the run, spurning the chance to pass to Adebayor in an offside position, seeing the gap that had been created by the runs of the Togolese forward and Bendtner and waited for it to be filled by Fabregas.

The missed chances were, in the end, costly. Fabregas and Bendtner snatched at shots that had rebounded from the post to them when they had more time, controlling the ball would have been a better option which is easy to say with hindsight although I suspect that Bendtner knew pretty quickly what Kolo Toure felt in much the same way that Adebayor knew that the Ivorian did not appreciate a simple wall pass being cocked-up in the first half, an opportunity that would have seen Toure clean through without a defender having any chance of catching him.

Liverpool set out to disrupt with a 4-3-3 that was meant to be attacking but ended up being forced into a defensive 4-5-1 for most of the match. Their opener came from the pressure, Almunia making a good save, pushing the ball away from the incoming Torres. Eventually the ball found its way to Fabregas who lost control, fouling Alonso on the edge of the area even if the dive was somewhat theatrical. The wall committed a cardinal sin of breaking; if it had held firm, it might have been painful for a few minutes but not as painful as chasing a game for seventy minutes.

The chances Liverpool had were restricted to long range efforts, indicative of the manner in which the Arsenal back four and midfield protected their area. Almunia eased some of the doubts that surfaced recently with solid saves from Crouch and Gerrard, Riise sent an effort onto the top of the net. At the other end, Hyppia cleared off the line when Rosicky sent an effort over the onrushing Reina.

The introduction of Walcott, Gilberto and Bendtner was an interesting one. The removal of Eboue and Rosicky was unsurprising but Clichy, I presume had some sort of knock or appeared tired as he provides more of an attacking threat than Flamini from the left back position. But the changes worked as a point was salvaged.

Gripes about referees are nothing unusual but how Carragher remained on the pitch is beyond me. Twice he gave away stonewall penalties, twice neither were given but then as the sign says ‘This Is Anfield’. Grappling with opponents shirts is, the last time I looked, a punishable offence yet not for Carragher. Neither is putting your shoulder into an onrushing opponent. Eboue may or may not have ‘over-reacted’ but quite what Carragher thought he was doing throwing out an arm, I doubt even he knows. A lucky boy as is Mascherano, the second week running that a Liverpool player has escaped the correct punishment for a two-footed lunge from a mid-air position. When Steven Gerrard looks back at the times he was sent off for doing exactly that, he must feel hard done by.

One final thought. Since when did Arsenal allow tradition to die easily? Has the Club become so commercial that it has forgotten its roots, its heritage? Why was Emmanuel Eboue allowed to walk out with a long sleeved shirt in the second half? Heads must roll and I expect Peter Hill-Wood, Vic Akers and Arsene to resign immediately for such shoddiness.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Why was Emmanuel Eboue allowed to walk out with a long sleeved shirt in the second half? Heads must roll and I expect Peter Hill-Wood, Vic Akers and Arsene to resign immediately for such shoddiness.

i think ure stupid enough to think that that’s an issue.nuff said.

  2. Shows how much our expectations have risen with this team that a point at Anfield feels disappointing! Fortunately, these boys seem to be quick learners and hopefully that disintegration of the wall will not happen again.

    Bring on the next opponent!

  3. John

ure = Former Arsenal centre half

1.’you are’ is the correct grammar.
    2. Sentences begin with a capital letter

    You call me stupid?

  4. That’s right Yogi, That performance was well worth three points.
As for Adebayor’s “off day”, I don’t think he’s yet at a point where he can be an effective lone striker: Hard as he works, he needs to develop composure and improve his touch before he can become one. His presence and movement, in my opinion, are currently more useful with a partner who exploits the resultant spaces. I’d be interested in giving Bendtner a run up front when we next play a lone frontman.
Jamie Carragher is using up his luck quota at a frightening rate.
Would we have been better off with a 4-4-2 with Rosicky and Hleb-what a pass that was to Fabregas- on the flanks and Walcott starting with Adebayor?

  5. And oh! a defensive coach and special sessions in taking and defending set-pieces please.

  6. YW – You just about summed up the afternoon I’d say. Ignore the ignoramus, the rest of us got the joke.

  7. Eboue should be banned for 3 games for wearing that long sleeve shirt

  8. A reasonable summary Yogi although I think the feeling of dissapointment about the win our performance definately deserved has caused you slighty gloss over the fact that we played quite brillianty. After the game i was happy & relived but now I am also thinking alot about the points that got away. We were superb in every dept except up front where we were toothless. The 2 sitters apart i was very dissapointed once again with Ade & his lack of goals is becoming a concern. Yes his workrate & interplay is valueble but when u look at the fact that he has played 7 epl games & scored in only 3 of them you begin to wonder when Arsene will give Bendtner or Ed a sustained chance in the team. If Ed playes 1 game & doesnt score why is then absent for the next 3 or 4? Everyone says it will take time 4 him to find his feet but for that to happen he needs games. Ade’s not scoring so whats there to lose. The midfield will not be able to bail out the striker all the time therefore i feel its time for Ade to sit out a few and be replaced. We have proved a point today & with RVP to return in a few weeks i have no fear for this young side. Bring on Utd as I believe we are going to realistically challange them for the title this year. Ps Alex Hleb is a world superstar.

  9. Agree with what you said Yogi. In the cold light of day this is two points dropped. So strange that we dominated possession so thoroughly and the pundits continue to drool so lavishly over our football, yet we played no where near our best. Maybe Wenger should have sacrificed that possession for the extra front man and a more pointed goal threat. Just have to say Kolo Toure was truly the king yesterday. His reading of play, picking off attackers in full flight and his sheer desire to win was magnificent!

  10. YW

You’re found of giving praises even when its undeserved. Simply put Ade was poor. He holds the ball well but can he finish? His passes to team mates were disjointed and he frustrated a lot of our moves. Other floppers include Rosicky and Eboue. It hurts me that we drew this game. We should’ve won this game with little amount of composure; with Eboue, Cesc and Bendtner losing it in front of goal.

This team is good but what this game has shown us is that we need a striker. Ade can hold the ball but we can’t rely on him to deliver the goals that we need. It’s proven. To win we need goals and he can’t provide them. Why Bendtner still sits on the bench with all the threats he poses when he comes on beats my imagination. I agree with Arsene but his judgemet of Bendtner is doubtful to me. If only Arsene had dropped Rosicky and started Bendtner we could’ve won this game.

It’s painful to have all this opportunity to extend a gap and didn’t take advantage of it.

  11. We dominated possession but absolutely brilliant, i’m afraid not KingKolo! We maybe deserved three points but must blame ourselves that a Liverpool team there to be taken was let off the hook by performance that was at times wasteful and low on cutting edge! Our killer pass was anonymous and the main culprit was a very average Eboue although no attackers quite found their “A” game. Next week we have to go up a gear and I know we will!

  12. Good one Yogi, as for the long sleeved shirts when did the tradition of shirts tucked in vanish?

  13. Overall, we have a good team. To be great, well, let’s see if we can roll MU over next week AND maintain the form until the Premiership is won.

I agree with u that Ade had a day off, but then again to be a top striker, he cannot have days off too often, esp against top teams. If we had RvP, likely we would have won.

Somehow I think AW must give Bendtner more chances. The game looked better after he has come on. It became too predictable with Ade ploughing alone. I thought AW should have replaced Eboue earlier with Theo, then replace Rosicky with Bendtner on the hour.

It was like u said, two points dropped. But then again, at this stage of the season, I will take the point.

  14. Definitely 2 points dropped.

I suppose we’ve proven to anyone and everyone that we’re good enough to fight for the title.

“Shows how much our expectations have risen with this team that a point at Anfield feels disappointing! ”

    Very, very true.

If I was Gillet or Hicks, I’d be asking how you can become a worse team after spending £46m adding to a squad that finished 3rd in the Premiership and reached a European Cup final.

Also, compare and contrast yesterday to the last two or three league performances at Anfield.

  15. John of The Long Sleeve Shirt and the slow brain——-please leave your intelligence is bringing doxn the average

  16. As for Ade’s performance I would say, he deserves to take a break. Ed has got great touch, superb pace and decent finish so he should be given more chances.

  17. Liverpool scored early and then tried to hold onto that lead. Rafa sacrificed both Kyut and Voronin as attackers and used them to stop Sagna and Clichy as an attacking force. He used Mascherano and Alonso to shackle Hleb and Cesc. Then he was relying on the pace of Torres and running from deep from Gerrard to nick a goal. Total case of his tactics trying to nullify as much of arsenals attacking avenues as he could with the hope that either gerrard or torres could win it with the 1 goal. Nearly worked too but yet again arsenal play right to the end and get a goal in last 10 mins. How many is that this season ?

  18. Ade really deserves a break or sometime on the bench. He was more of a liability in most moves than an asset. This season. he has only performed well against Spurs and Derby, two teams struggling for their lifes in the relegation battle zone. With all the chances he gets, he should’ve been 15 goals by now. Torres in our team could score 30 a season but I doubt if Ade can deliver more than 15. AW should seriously give Bendtner some starts to prove himself, otherwise we shop for a striker in the January window.

I feel very terrible that we had opportunities to take all the 3 points and still let it drop.

  19. This was a magnificent performance. Our football was fantastic, we made Liverpool look like a Sunday-league team, which unfortunately for them, is not too far from the truth.

Jamie Redknapp – a draw was fair.
Jamie Carragher – man of the match.

What a farce. A draw was only fair if you have no interest in watching football, like watching an expensively assembled bunch of cloggers scrapping for their lives, and Carragher man of the match if you encourage cheating and getting away with it.

Hleb was perfection from start to finish, Cesc not far behind. Most of the team was excellent, and I’d like to give some praise to Eboue because I’m sure no one else will, but I thought he was excellent, it was his interplay with Hleb and Cesc that was responsible for most of our football, interlaced with some occasional poor passes, but I’ll take that.

All that said, the tactics were a little wrong – hard to complain after such a performance, but when you find yourself 1-0 down after outplaying the opposition for 80 minutes, and having not created many clear cut chances, something wasn’t right. The something that clearly wasn’t right, was that we didn’t have enough support for Adebayor. The 4/5 in midfield was a decent idea, but once we’d taken a grip on the game, we needed to adjust. Rosicky was anonymous. We needed to force the game, Liverpool were there for the taking, but we needed more men in the box. I’d personally liked to have seen Walcott or Bendtner on a lot sooner, we looked a lot more dangerous once they were on, if they’d come on earlier, who knows. We had the situation at one point where Gallas was trying to force the game by going forward itself, that wasn’t clever switching of roles, it was just desperation, the defenders were twitching their thumbs and the team didn’t have enough numbers up front.

Still, we went into this game hoping perhaps we could deliver a knock-out blow to Liverpool, and with the injuries they’ve collected in this one, not to mention the bruising out-classing, we might just have done that.

  20. Maybe we shouldnt be so harsh on John – definately a 7.30AM comment! :-)

I think you need another cup of coffee John!

Good post as usual Yogi – i too felt happy at a point at the final whistle, only to feel dissapointed after refelcting on the game.

Flamini must take some blame for the goal – if he had stood his ground in the wall, he would of been in position to block the shot.

All in all we played well, and would of won with a little more composure in front of goal.

On a positive note – it is a point more than we got in the same fixture last year.

Does anyone else think that Arsene seems to be improving at making substitutions this season?

Eboue was poor, Rosicky did not have a good game – and the subs came at pretty much the right time.

And another slice of humble pie for me this weekend – Hleb was outstanding.

  21. After the Spurs game, I was prepared to give Adebayor the benefit of the doubt. Since then I think he has been a liability. His clumsy first touch is so out of character with the rest of the team it is embarrassing to watch.
Toure was obviously not amused to have made a magnificent run into the Liverpool penalty area when a simple return pass from Adebayor would have led to Kolo scoring. The usual unskilled, far to heavy prod led to the chance disappearing. He causes so many of our great moves to break down that he is having a negative effect of the team’s overall performance. He is quite rightly praised for his hard work, but if you watched closely yesterday as I did, even that was missing.
I cannot understand why Eduardo is not being given an extended run, especially with RVP out for a while. We desperately need a predator in the box and I am sure Eduardo would have put away at least one of the loose chances that were sadly missed.

  22. You don’t see much humour in your life do you John?

Agree with most of that YW. An excellent piece in your own inimitable style.

Ade was not at his best but he still had that energy to run Liverpool to the point where they were opened up in that last 15 minutes. I don’t think that Bentner or Ed can give us that. Ade contributed to the team effort & on another day could have been more productive himself.

Clichy & Rosicky were also not at their best but I thought Eboue, a couple of poor passes apart, had a decent day. Carracher, who I like as a player, was lucky to get away with quite a lot yesterday, specially that straight forearm on Eboue.

I don’t think any Arsenal side, in my time, has ever dominated Liverpool, at Anfield, anywhere near as much as this.

An excellent performance against a very strong side.

    Why are we complaining?

  23. Guys i dont think your giving Liverpool enough credit as they had to work their socks off to keep us at bay. The perfect example of this was when Garacher was interviewed after the game and was out on his feet totally exhausted, which shows teams have to work so hard to counter our movement. A point at Anfield is a good result at any time and we cant expect to score for fun every week, sometimes it just wont go your way. Lets all be proud of the fantastic football we are turning out and the many admirers we must be getting around the world. During a season a Premiership winning team is bound to drop points, lets not get too down about losing two.

  24. Hi All

Woked up just in time to see the last 30 minutes of the game at around 2.30 AM my time zone. We were down 1-0 then. I missed some of the razzle dazzle of the first half from the team that was reported by the press. I did witness the miss by Brendtner and the substitution. While I did not see the firts half I was very surprise by the substitution as it took away our width ie Rosicky and Clichy on the left wing.

We were not as dominant until minutes before Cesc scored the equaliser Ade was poor and running out of steam.

From what I have seen of Brendther I am not sure he would have done better considering he missed the target on the rebound from Cesc’s shot that hit the right post.

So I came off quite flat watching this performance. This Liverpool team was quite poor and negative. It was 2 points dropped. But the season is early and we held our nerve the only consolation.

  25. Howard have to agree with u that Ade is having a bad run, he should be on the bench once the MANU game is out of the way. Dudu should be in the squad Im sure he would have scored yesterday. He will probably play on Wednesday and depending on how he does will be included at leat on the bench for Saturday. BTW why didnt you mention how well Almunia played.

AW will not buy a striker as RVP will be fit by November 20 and theres no room for more than 4 strikers so unless we get a good price for Bentdner I cant see that happening

  26. What’s with you guys. Eboue poor? Apparently Carragher does not share your opinion with that unprovoked forearm smash in the first half. The boy was decent on the right side especially with Sagna having to stay at home more than usual. As hboy correctly observed his interplay with the Hlebinator on the right side on occasions was superb. That shot which cannoned from Reina’s left post and the rebound ballooned by Cesc deserved a goal. For those Eboue-haters out there, stop being one-eyed Cyclops. As a midfielder he offers a lot more defensively on the right side than Rosicky or Walcott. That’s why he is starting. Jeez…talk about a herd mentality.

  27. I dont think its about feeling disappointed or happy. with football, a point is a point, because you can win or lose games on the smallest of details – had Gallas not made that challenge liverpool probably would have won. you move on to the next game and try and focus on the areas where you are weak and improve them.
I was happy with our overall level of play, which away at Anfield was something special.

I think the defence were excellent. toure and Gallas in particular. Flam was at fault for the wall breaking and IMO, Bert should play against united.

Ade had a poor game but he still wore out the ‘pool defenders, but wengers substitutions were at least 10 minutes too late, which is odd since he normally makes them at 60minutes. With a very tired liverpool, had we got fresh legs supporting Ade earlier I am convinced we could have made them pay.

Ade is still an important player but I am surprised at the lack of action for both EDS and Bendtner. they both deserve more.
Still not convinced Eboue is good enough. he was an average right back and he is an average right winger. a jack of all trades, master of none. useful squad player but I would seriously love to have an out an out winger in the team. I would take a few million for him in January and buy Modric if nothing else is available.
Not sure why Ros looked so far off the pace. was he carrying an injury? very worrying. we need him to step up this season if we are to win the league but the evidence so far this season is not hugely positive. I think with him it is a physical thing.
I have harped on about this for a long time but Hleb should be left side and Ros right side. wenger please make that switch permanent. Hleb is twice the player on the left (or centrally). Ros is a good crosser from the right.

I think in the long run Bendtner and Walcott could be a devastating pair. EDS and RVP are also quality finishers. Ade could be running on borrowed time and he needs a great finisher next to him to stop his embarrasment. thats why RVP and Ade worked so well even though they never really play off each other.
I would seriously think about resting Eboue and Ade for united, but clearly wenger wouldn’t.

  28. I think I will trust AW’s judgments, Gazzap.

  29. [...] This game was on Canadian TV so I didn’t record highlights, however you can get them from here. Grab the feed. There’s a much more level-headed take over at A Cultured Left Foot. [...]

  30. [...] Report A Cultured Left Foot | [...]

  31. What’s the deal with the long-sleeved shirt?

I’ve only supported Arsenal for a a few years (yup, I’m an American) and I didn’t get the joke. Can someone explain?

    Cheers.

    Yogi,

    Thanks for all your effort.

  32. I read my post again and maybe I sounded more negative than I actually feel. Hleb will be the next Bergkamp and he is near there now. The eye for the killer pass is getting better and better. And he is faster and dribbles better. Once the calmness in finishing is learnt then he may even be better than DB 10. DB 10 had scored the most exquisite goals in the premier league’s history. He will be a a hard act to follow but Helb will get near there.

Brendther needs more game time and Ade had too many. Clichy needs a rest and I feel that the 7-0 trashing of Slavia may have taken too much from some of the boys. Sometimes 1-0 to the Arsenal may not be a bad result as we have still a relatively thin squad and wants to be challeging for CL and the Premier League this year.

Gallas played better than last year. Toure has improved in that he is steadier this year.

MA has performed well for us not to be too troubled by Jens leaving in Jan 08.

Eboue is 10 minutes very good and the next 15 poor. So I am not sure of him at all.

Flamini has been at it for 120 % the last 12 games or so, so may be Bert should come back for little while.

  33. Flint, at every opportunity you make a snidy little dig at me and others on this blog. do you think that makes you look better? I dont.
You’d be better off putting forward your counter arguments to specific points if you disagree with any of it.

  34. Why should Eboue always hit the post? Its wierd. I can count the number times this has happened. Against Chelsea, Spurs, Manu and now Pool. What’s wrong with his composure?

  35. Here we go again. It was a good performance yesterday but we really shouldn’t have expected our scoring problems from last season to simply vanish completely.

What really surprises me is now that we have drawn against Liverpool away, all the wannabe managers have come sagely out of the woodwork to let us exactly how AW would have won the game if only he had listened to their wise words.

We did enough to win that game and if you really want to look at it in the cold light of day then you could say that it was Cesc or the wall that lost us 2 points. But no one wants to say it was Cesc’s fault and it is much easier to pass the blame by talking about what could have happened.

What did happen though is the man that everyone wants to replace Ade, missed the best chance to win the game for us. If Ade had done that there would have been people frothing at the mouth in anger.

If only more people would take up Yogi’s style and give a balanced view of what happened – with a healthy dose of arsenal bias. As comments like this from Howard are just ridiculous

“If only Arsene had dropped Rosicky and started Bendtner we could’ve won this game”

  36. Don’t agree with anyone giving stick to Adebayor, let’s get it straight, Adebayor is pivotal to our attack, he’s going nowhere. It’s one thing to say he wasn’t effective, another to say he should be dropped/rested. Bendtner is the only player close to being capable of giving the team what Ade brings, and I don’t think he’s anywhere close to being mature/strong enough to handle that position right now. Adebayor is a maturing star, there is no question of his talent. Ditto for Eboue.

Veteran – not giving Liverpool enough credit?, too much credit I’m afraid, way too much. Part timers get credit for trying hard against Premiership opposition in the FA Cup, we’re talking about Liverpool, we’re talking about a team who considerably out-spend us each summer, we’re talking about a team paraded all summer as potential champions, with Arsenal deemed no hopers. They didn’t deserve credit, they deserved shame, which they got in the form of silence from their own supporters for the duration, who were bamboozled at their own lack of progress in the face of this Arsenal team, they must have thought we’d arrived from a different planet. If I’d been a Liverpool fan, I’d have been truly embarrassed. For all their spending, Gerrard was still their only hope.

  37. Gazzap-

I think my views are well enough known on here.

There are a lot of things I can agree with you on & some I don’t. That is just opinion.

What I find hard to accept is this “I know better than AW” tone that you & a lot of others take.

I am sorry if you consider that “snide”.

  38. sorry, on reflection I did not mean to say Ade should be dropped/rested. I just meant that with Bendtner around, Ade has to play well or risk being subbed off. I WOULD start with Ade against united, but i’d have no issue in bringing him off if he was not on form. It seems AW will never sub Ade off even when NB comes on.

I dont think anyone is making Ade an easy scapegoat. fact is, he DID NOT miss any sitters while other players, including Cesc, did. But cesc had a level of play that was so high that you cannot criticise him. Meanwhile Ade had a poor game of misplaced passes and not enough hold up play which should be his bread and butter.

for united, I would rather see Walcott on right than Eboue, and rather see Hleb left than Ros and rather see Bert in the middle than Flam, who seemed to have peaked about 4-5 matches ago. and where is EDS? this guy needs games, he can be as clinical as RVP in the box and while RVP is out needs games badly.

  39. Flint, arsene is the best manager in the world and if he ever leaves, it will be a sad day indeed. doesn’t mean I cant say I think the substitutions should have happened 10 minutes earlier. its my opinion and I am allowed it.
I dont think this means I beleive I am better than AW. that’s a strange logic that you are using.

  41. Somewhat counter to Yogi, I was actually really disappointed at full time that we hadn’t picked up the three points (and Carragher’s MOTM award) but having thought about it for a while (and watched the highlights) now feel a point was actually a fair result and that Liverpool’s defence really did deserve a lot of credit (and considering Hyppia is a liability, a lot of that defence under pressure came from Carragher).

Agree with Yogi’s piece and many of the posts here so will just pick up a few specific points to discuss:

    1) Adebayor – he doesn’t have the consistent technique of other players in the side. This is obviously an issue when you play for Arsene Wenger and teh basis of your football is entirely based on technique and pace. As a result, when he misses chances (admittedly all too often), it’s easy to get further annoyed by the poor touches and the compounded frustration makes you want to vent your spleen. I’ll admit i’ve done that many atime. However, the reason he’s in our side is to give us a plan B. There will be games this season when our passing football isn’t working for whatever reason, and we’ll need to long ball to ease pressure / try something different. Similarly, the threat of this plan B pushes back opposition defences and creates more space for our midfielders to play the A game so ironicially increases the chances of him not being needed as a long ball option. It’s for this reason that he plays and I think in that context he adds a lot to our side by being present in the side. This physical / aerial strength isn’t present in Edu for all his technical merits, and i don’t think Bendtner is yet mature enough to accept this role – while he’s undoubtedly a better finisher, I suspect he’s still keen to show his skills and force the game by running at defences when he wins it, rather than hold the ball and pass of to teammates. This was highlighted after he came on by the number of times he lost the ball attacking. My point is that Adebayor helps the Arsenal technique-based game by dint of not being a technique based player. If he could finish, I’d be really happy, but I think it’s a case of giving him some time to develop his finishing – I can recall how Henry wasn’t the greatest box / 1-on-1 finisher for his first couple of seasons in the team.

    2) Hleb. Absoutely tremendous. I’ve always been a fan – rather than beat players with fancy step-overs he does it with his body shape – something one of my mate’s refers to as “old school trickery” á la KH Rummenigge back in the ’70s. Just class.

    3) Eboue. I’m with Shotta Gunner on this one. I’ll admit, I was at the Bolton game last saturday and was absolutely livid with Eboue in that game. But I thought, for the most part, he had a good game against Liverpool. He was really important in linking the play between flamini and fabregas/hleb and building momentum. His movement in the play before he hit the post was absolute class. I do think he lacks confidence on the wing at present – he’s absolute lightning and is a box of tricks but is often scared of taking on his full back and pacing it down the wing. I remember when we first bought him. He lacked confidence for almost a year and wasn’t getting into the team, and it was only when he had an excellent African Nations cup that he suddenly came back full of confidence and played really well. With a new position, I think he’s just slowly building up this confidence again, and once he learns to take on players I think he’ll be an excellent right winger. He gets a lot of stick because he’s such a bad diver and has a knack of avoiding big 50:50 tackles – this doesn’t help when combined with inconsistency. But I do think we need to get off his back a little and give him a season in his new position and see how he does.

    4) It’s total football isn’t it? When I saw both Toure and Gallas linking up in the opposition box (at 1-1) and their presence wasn’t a result of a set-piece but having developed the ball from the back, I was absolutely loving it. Sometimes this really does feel like we’re watching the ‘74 Dutch National team.

    5) Come on the Arsenal!!!!

    Phew, i’m done! :)

  42. It’s unfortunate that some Arsenal players don’t seem to have enough ‘credit’ in the bank to allow them a few misplaced passes or off days. Even the great TH14 had his sub-par moments. At the end of the day, the only opinion that matters is Wenger’s.

Perhaps some of those expecting perfection from the players should bear things in mind like the fact that Rosicky is still working his way back from injury and may have a little mental work to overcome a slight fear of breaking down again. Constructive criticism is fine, but as fans, knowing the players as we do we should be able to put it into context and try to be supportive with it.

  43. I agree with the both of you, Flint and Gazzap. On Flint’s side, I’m pretty much 100% behind anyone that Wenger signs / rates, I back his judgement entirely, especially with young players. On Gazzap’s side, we are here to debate these things. I think Arsene is pretty average in terms of tactics, but we all accept that, it’s “go out and play good football” and nothing much more advanced than that, which is fantastic 90% of the time. Some times you are left pulling your hair out and wishing Arsene had Mourinho’s in-game tactical nouse. For me, the subs were too late yesterday, Liverpool were there for the taking, they’d been ran all over the park and were struggling with injuries, if the change had been made earlier, we may have gone on to win it.

  44. Good points there AmanM.

Ade gives you many options because of his combination of size, speed & tenacity. He is 23 & has time to improve, which I am sure he will. He is still at the smoothing of the rough diamond stage.

We will see some forward rotation, as the season progresses. Bentner will get starts before too long but in the main he will probably be introduced gradually, like RVP.

  45. It is true that AW always says he concentrates on what we are going to do, rather than worry about the opposition.

That is not quite the case though because he does change the make up of the side against the better opponents, hence Rosicky in for Walcott.

You have to have faith in the style of football we produce or it cannot work. That style has become a bit more mixed, so that can be a tactic in itself.

In that respect AW is not like Mourinio or Benitez as a tactician. We cannot alter our basic style.

The problem with this is the comparatively rare occasions when we get a poor pitch, or the more common refs that allow us to be kicked off the park, or a combination of both (eg Sheff Utd). We should be better able to deal with that now, but we shall see.

I too would have liked to have seen the subs. earlier but this is a fine judgment. We were playing well but to go 2-0 down would have been fatal. We don’t know which players have knocks so we just have to accept AW’s choices.

As it turned out the subs did make a difference & we had enough chances to have won the game, in that last 15 minutes.

  46. Manuel Almunia: England’s No.1.

  47. Interestingly where is “ethan gooner”
I am really missing his “rose tinted glasses” kind of statements
overall an amazing match and gunning for victory next week against the manure

  48. Ade was far too isolated. Almunia proved he’s a top shot-stopper but will never be a top-level keeper in terms of commanding the area. Fabregas didn’t have a good game, yet still BBC Sport’s player rate asks “Who was the best player, Gerrard or Fabregas?” Admittedly Gerrard was good and always threatening but Hleb was by far the best player on the pitch. Eboue needs a good kicking, I can’t believe he’s getting selected – if you need a defensive presence wide right, put Flamini there (he played there in the Deschamps role pre-Arsenal) and Gilberto can return in the centre.

Incidentally I thought Gilberto and Bendtner both did very well after coming on. Theo will be disappointed to not have been given a go front-centre at all though, especially after Slavia.

  49. interesting point there crafty about flam moving to right wing and bert back into the middle.
I guess the options for the wing are walcott, eboue or Rosicky before you think of flamini – and normally rosicky would get the vote hands down so I hope his poor game was a one off.
I also think wenger wont now return flam to a position he is not happy in, since he has done well in the middle. I could be wrong, but I think AW wont want to dilute what flam has acheived. Moving him to left back yesterday was not a big surprise – I think clichy has needed a rest for afew games now.

the thing that surprised me in yesterday’s squad was the fact that diarra, Bert and Flam all travelled.

  50. After a run of “lesser-than” opponents, it was great to see both a smothering defense, and fantastic, sustained offensive form against a top side.
Finishing chances seven-out-of-seven one game, and one-out-of-five the next is going to be a problem for a team that creates so many chances. It’s not the worst problem in the world to have (tho’ Ade seems to need someone else up there with him). A worse problem is one that Arsenal doesn’t have: a defense that looks like it’s standing still next to an opponent’s fast strikers and midfielders–the way that all defenses look against Arsenal. The Arsenal defense looks consistently faster than opponents, to the extent that players like Sagna look at home when they go forward. If I’m playing Arsenal, I’m as worried about scoring as being scored upon. All points not taken have been the result of momentary gaffs in an otherwise rock solid defense (stick with Almunia), and it’s for this reason Arsenal should worry ManU (I think it’s funny that the mouths at ManU insist Arsenal have no claim to contention because they haven’t proven themselves after a loss yet).

  51. Great game yesterday (already blogged). On to the next game, Sheffield United. I’m itching to watch our 2nd string play again. Need to see who really steps up because after Man U AW will probably make more rotations till the end of the year to maintain our high standard of play.
Diarra, Hoyte, Diaby, Denilson, EDS, Traore, Song & Fabianski all need a good run out to prepare US for Nov-Dec.
Fab4, StereoHleb13, Clichy, Ade, Flam & Sagna will need reduced minutes in Nov after we beat ManU.

  52. Who will play CB with Song if Swiss T is still not fit?

  53. Am I the only one… it was a superb game that the Gunners played but I did feel occasionally frustrated about the stray passes that went straight to the opposition… Or was it because the Liverpool defence/midfield did so well in intercepting and breaking up our play? Other than that, the Gunners were fantastic and really deserved all three points. So, no complaints there. :)

    Now bring on ManU!

  54. Flint – fair points. I agree our basic style should stay the same, and I love Arsene’s approach above tactics, I’d hate us to try and nullify players and what-not, he’s got it bang on. But I think his tactical substitutions haven’t always been good (a few times bringing on extra centre halfs to horrendous results), and often, like yesterday, not quickly enough.

I think he did have a ponder at the end of last season and decide that more strength was required. Regardless of what the others say here, I’m sure that Eboue is part of Arsene’s master plan. I saw Eboue and Sagna do fantastic things as a partnership in pre-season, and I think that will come out more as the season progresses. Two strong men, able to interchange and overlap, it’s a real force to be reckoned with. For me, Wenger believes in this selection so strongly, that he’s allowed Hleb to be moved around because of it, pushed out to wide left and behind the striker. As long as he performs, and he most certainly did yesterday, the position is his. He will definetely start against Man Utd.

Against Man Utd, I’d expect two up front, I think it’d be seen as a negative approach by Arsene not to play two up front. Depends on the fitness of EDS I guess, but I’d expect him to play, with Rosicky dropping out. If not, perhaps he will play the same formation, but with Diaby coming in for Rosicky. Either way, we need more cutting edge and I don’t think these tight congested games really play to Rosicky’s strengths.

  55. Louisa – I think stray passes will always happen when we’re on top of our game. We play at such speed, at such a cutting edge and crispness, it’s relying on almost telepathic understandings, and it can’t come off all the time. I think achieving maybe a 90% success rate brings breath-taking results, as we saw yesterday. It was true for the 7-0 Prague game too, lots of misplaced passes, but lots of exciting football. As Arsene said, playing without the handbrake, playing without a fear of what will happen if we give the ball away. For me, it’s to be encouraged, and the fans should accept the misplaced passes as a consequence. The players know to turn these passing sequences on and off, we’re generally very good at keeping the ball when we’re in front, slowing things down, we were just chasing the game all match yesterday so there was a lot of risk-based football.

CB mid-week, surely Gilberto (if no Senderos) with Song. Gilerto has hardly played, and I don’t think he’ll be in Arsene’s first-11 plans for Man Utd.

  56. hboy, that’s what most people fail to realise – we make more passes and take more risks therefore passess will go astray. But even so I think the stats yesterday showed over 83% success rate with our passes, which are usually going forward rather than backwards.

  57. Hleb is far better on the left than on the right.

    What I’d do – if they’re all fit, I haven’t checked -

    SHEFF UTD:
    Fabianski GK
    Hoyte RB
    Gilberto CB
    Song CB
    Traore LB
    Lansbury RM
    Diarra CM
    Diaby CM
    Eduardo LM/CF
    Walcott CF/LM
    Bendtner CF

    MAN UTD:
    Almunia GK
    Sagna RB
    Toure CB
    Gallas CB
Clichy LB (but he needs next game off)
    Flamini RM
    Gilberto CM
    Fabregas CM
    Hleb LM
    Adebayor CF
    Walcott CF

  58. Crafty you left out Denilson or is he injured my apologies if he is

  59. I love Fleetwood Mac

  60. denilson would be peeved if he were not picked for sheffield. Maybe Gilberto will play at the back but could be Gavin hoyte?

  61. Crafty,

There is NO, i repeat NO way Gilberto will play against sheffield. NO NO way.

One thing is to have him on the bench against Liverpool, another is to pair him with ten 19 year olds (my pardon for the hyperbole here).

course if he does play ill feel the fool. but you gotta take a stand

  62. I will repeat the clown even missed the ball at the kick off.

Do not underestimate what Eboue has to offer the team

  63. To crafty Bison.
You are a courageous man if you can pick an Arsenal team without including Rosicky

  64. Tagertux (from way back)

The tradition is that the team wears the same style of shirt that the Captain decides. If he wants long sleeves, the team wear it, irrespective of the conditions. The same with short sleeves.

    YW

  65. Apparently Gilberto has told AW that he will not play CB against Sheffield Utd. If this is true it makes me very sad as he is obviously peeved off with his lack of playing and he has been a rock for us. However it sickens me when players tell their managers where and when they are going to play.
They get great money for performing and should play where the boss asks them to. Its the slippery slope when this happens as recent history of players like Bellamy have shown.
Flamini has benefited from getting himself together, working hard and cementing his place in the starting line-up. However as we get into the Winter and more injuries occur, then Gilberto would surely be seen more.
He is a great back-up and slotted right into the groove when he came on as sub against Liverpool. I hope these reports are not true or maybe exaggerated as he is certainly an important part of the squad, otherwise he will be another one out of the door.
Most of them in this scenario in the past have, like Petit, regretted leaving for far fields which have not turned out to be greener when they got there. Think hard GDS.

  66. HEY GUYS

    Congratulations

  67. Thanks Yogi. Just checked back to find your answer on sleeves. One the fashion side of things I’m sad to see that none of the players are wearing their socks quite as high as TH14 did last season. Surely someone could have continued that.
