Cesc Is Nuts and Adebayor

Tomorrow’s game is favoured topic of conversation amongst the players as one might expect. This morning’s Sun has Cesc proclaiming,

We’re like Brazil when they’re at the top of their game. The best thing about us is how quick and precise we are. But we must keep our feet on the ground and work harder than everyone else. Staying right at the top is the hardest thing

Whilst there is little to disagree with, the Brazil comparison is nuts. If he had used the 1970’s Brazil as a comparison, I might have agreed but for the current incarnation, I think he is wrong. Arsenal would beat them.

Cesc went on,

We have two tough league matches coming up and they provide an opportunity to show our strength. We will have to give everything to get a good result at Anfield but I trust in our team.

And therein is the crucial difference between this campaign and the two preceding. Whilst the team played well sporadically before – three good games, one indifferent, one bad – the start to this season has allowed them to believe in themselves post-Henry. The fixtures have been kind to a certain extent in that all of the home games should have been won but the away games were the sort of matches in which we have invariably fallen down.

But still it is not good enough for those who report on things. Still they do not consider Arsenal to be a genuine challenger for the title, simply because we have not played anyone decent. Yet titles are rarely decided over the matches between the top four, it is how many wins you get against teams from fifth to twentieth. Manchester United hardly set the world alight last season against their nearest rivals yet ended up winning the title with games to spare. Arsenal have been the same in the past, taking maybe eight or nine from eighteen points available in those matches.

Emmanuel Adebayor is interviewed in the Daily Mail today. He recalls the time when Arsene contacted him about moving to Arsenal,

I was in Togo having a kickabout with friends when my phone rang. One boys answered it and said, “Manu, it is Arsene for you”. “Arsene who?”, I said. “Arsene Wenger”, he said, “Get out of it”, I said, and grabbed the phone off him. But then I heard the voice. “Allo”. F***ing hell. It is Arsene Wenger!

He asked if I would come and play for Arsenal and I said I’d play for free. It was like moving from hell to paradise and, for the faith he showed in me then, I will forever be trying to repay him

Which is pretty much a common theme amongst a lot of the squad. They feel they owe Wenger a huge personal debt for giving them their chance at Arsenal and on the bigger stage. Which is why when you read the ‘loyalty’ pieces, this should be borne in mind and overreactions to the ‘news’ that a ‘starlet’ will leave if Arsene does should be toned down.

Adebayor is a deceptively fast man if his reports are correct, 4.90 seconds over forty metres, 11.41 over one hundred. To put it in perspective, Henry apparenty clocked 4.85 over the shorter distance whilst Walcott comes in at 11.85 for the longer. It is not surprising that he is quick given his leg length but it is an aspect of his game that gets overlooked because he is, well, awkward.

He has a high opinion of his abilities, borne by the displays he has made this season,

In the game, I’m very good. I’m strong, I’m fast, I can jump high, my holding of the ball is per…at the moment is very good. I nearly said perfect but nothing is perfect, and I still need to work more on my finishing

It is actually a pretty fair assessment of his game. He is good at the things he says and with six in nine Premiership games, he has a right to say his scoring ratio is as good as anyone’s yet the finishing does need working on. Alas this is where his detractors score points because he scores the difficult and fluffs the easy. It makes him more unpredictable for opponents but can let them off the hook on occasion. The key thing though is his overall contribution and it is about time that he was given proper credit where it is due, rather than having to defend himself against criticism of other aspects of his game. I am now hoping that he has a good game at Anfield so I don’t have to retract that defence of him.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Nice no-game Saturday post Yogi.
    “Arsene who?!!!!!!”
Adebayor can torment the best defenses in the game, but needs a bit more composure in the goal mouth. That I suppose will come sooner rather than later.
I think that our performances not being good enough for the media is the best thing that can happen to the team: It acts as a spur, and doesn’t allow fans and players alike to harbour needless expectations or illusions. In the ultimate analysis the table will speak for itself and I think this team will figure high up that reckoner.

  2. By the way, those sprint times surprised me! If ever there was deceptive pace, I suppose this qualifies.

  3. its good Adebayor knows his weaknesses. he is a good player but he needs to work upon his finishing. i was expecting adebayor to have many headers because of his physique and jumping.go on man…………..

  4. Flint McCullough

I thought he was quick but not as close to TH14 as that.

Mind you it is also a matter of what control you have of the ball, at pace, that you have.

Ade is effective now but I would say he is probably only at 70% of his full potential right now.

    Bodes well for us !

  5. Top post Yogi. I can’t believe we still have to defend Adebayor, for me, our most important forward, his injury would have been far worse for the team than Van Persie’s. Personally, I won’t blame the guy if he misses chances, we all know his finishing needs to improve, but he brings so much more to the team, his all-round contribution to the team is fantastic in pretty much every match. If I had one complaint, it would be that his performance levels don’t appear quite as good away from the Emirates. Mind you, he performed quite nicely at Spurs thankyou very much.

  6. Was it a game in pre-season when the commentators were talking about “work-rate percentages”? I remember them saying TH14’s work-rate (I assume that work-rate is ground covered in a match) had dropped massively in his last two years, AND (this is the key) that Ade gave us 20% more than Henry at his peak.

I think this level of work-rate is freakishly high, and combined with all his other qualities, makes him a massive influence on every game, even if he can’t score a tap-in at a plumbing fair.

I’ve been keeping my own statistics recently, and I’ve just made this category which I call “3rd play”, which I define as the key involvement leading up to an assist and/or a goal. It’s basically an assist of an assist. Some examples: 1. Clichy’s speed in closing down the Portsmouth player which led to a deflection into the path of RvP which led to the penalty. 2. Walcott’s second goal against Slavia midweek. Hleb was the assist with lovely ball, but the two passes before that (both first time) from Flam to Fab and Fab to Hleb, are what I count as “3rd play”. 3. (for fun) The idiotic spurs fan who invaded the pitch, which led to the retaking of the free-kick which Fab placed on Ade’s forehead.

Anyway, the point of saying all that is this: Ade has some great 3rd play stats. Two of the obvious examples are the goal at West Ham, where he drove into the box, held it up and laid it on for Hleb’s first time cross to RvP. Also, the 6th goal against Slavia, where he dummied beautifully, laid it on to Walcott, who set up Fab.

In summary, Adebayor is a class act.

  7. Glad to see Ade get some credit – too many fans say, ‘he’s a striker, so his job is to score’. But in a team like Arsenal, there is no ‘one man, one job’ and he should get credit for his all round team play. He contributes so much that is either taken for granted or overlooked. I’m sure there is more to come from this man once he becomes more efficient in taking his chances.

  8. lets hope Ade is in top form tomorrow. Im worried about the game, if we win it will really show how strong we are, but Lpool are coming off a bad defeat and will really go for us, and they have alonso and torres back in the team but their defense is still dodgy

  9. Passenal

I concur with your position; still Ade will be a top, top player if he improves on his finishing. I’m happy he recognises that and contnues to work on it.

In the big games like the POOL match, chances are few and you take your chances when it comes otherwise you lose ‘cos your opponent will exploit his chances. I’m already full of nerves in this game praying that Ade is on top of his game tomorrow ‘cos a win will just hand over the title. The belief and the motivation will be so great that the players can just ride over all subsequent opponents.

  10. but if you had to ask for liverpool to have a weak area, it would be the defence. so the fact that hyppia is playing is very good. OK so Alonso and Torres play but many teams we play have good midfielders and strikers. its the defence that you live and die by in this league and if they have a got any weaknesses tomorrow, then I expect us to make the most of them.
Rafa still has the eternal Alonso/Gerrard conundrum. its the same as our Diaby Cesc issue, but Diaby luckily is not so much a first team player with history as Gerrard is. so we can play a passer in the middle and only use Diaby when we want to. An Alonso/Mascherano midfield should be OK for us, though Masc had a really good game against us last season.
Toure should deal with Torres’ strength and pace. as I have said on here before, the man we find hard to deal with is Crouch. see kenwyne Jones and Kevin davies at Emirates for proof of how we still struggle with height.

  11. is sir wenger a genius or what?…he has looked at the career path of the great henry and applied that to the soon to be great walcott. he brought him as a striker , put him out wide like titi at juva, and now he will unleash him upfront!! all part of the grand plan!! absolute genius!!

  12. i was pissed of with him playing theo on d wing but there seems logic in the theory!!!!!

  13. haha all we have to do is give the ball to hyypia and he’ll score on his own net

  14. also let me say that i think bendtner is a great prospect, but walcott comes first!! i ope bendtner can have patience , but theo needs the chance first , after all he is english!!!!

  15. Being english or not is irrelevant to the debate of who should get to play. Bendtner and Walcott are different types of players – Bendtner more of a replacemet for Ade, Walcott a Henry-esque player.

  16. Gazzap

You’re right, the height of opponent’s strikers is a problem in the team that’s why I’m often disappointed with Senderos. He has good height but often falls short in headings and has never really made use of his physical gifts. Actually, if he had continued to develop well, we wouldn’t need Gallas. To fill the gap however, we eed Gilberto to cover the defence as Flamini can’t help us much. POOL will be employing their usual ‘hoofing of the ball’ game so Gilberto should be a better option than Flamster this time.
