Slavia Preview, Cap’n Bill And Arsene

Initially I thought that tonight’s team might contain a few changes; that was before the squad was announced. I say announced, more the BBC ran with their guess, hoovering up the tidbits of misinformation that float around before a game. The one change that seems likely to happen is that Theo Walcott will start, probably ahead of Emmanuel Eboue on the right. To me that makes more sense than resting Eduardo this evening, the other candidate to make way for Walcott. It is nothing less than the lad deserves, a chance to start following on from two impact performances from the bench. Having pace to burn is by far and away his best asset from that position; I hope that people will realise that he cannot do that for a whole ninety minutes, needing to be more judicious in his choices for runs than being able to replicate a thirty minute cameo, expanding it to a ninety minute performance of non-stop running.

The other position where I believe there could be activity is centre back with William Gallas making way for Gilberto, resting the Frenchman ahead of Saturday. We should not forget that he has returned from ten weeks of inactivity to playing two games in three days which if continued could well lead to a muscular injury that can ill be afforded with the upcoming fixture list in mind. Whether Arsene will do that or not is another manner and somehow I think he will play the Frenchman, perhaps taking the view that he needs another match to regain his sharpness which, let us not beat about the bush, was in no way challenged by an appalling Bolton attacking display.

Otherwise, it is hard to see that there are changes which are warranted. The ideal for Arsene I guess is to be three up with an hour played which would enable him to rest players such as Fabregas and Adebayor with Sunday in mind.

The team tonight will probably be

Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy; Walcott, Fabregas, Flamini, Hleb; Eduardo, Adebayor

with a bench of

Lehmann, Bendtner, Rosicky, Gilberto, Diaby, Denilson, Eboue

The problem Arsene has tonight is that this is a game we expect to win. Not even are expected, expect is the crucial word. Having seen the side enter the season as underdogs in the race for any trophies, expectations have shifted seismically. An unbeaten run with one draw and thirteen wins has created more confidence in the players which he appears to be keeping in check so that the dreaded prefix of ‘over‘ is not inserted beforehand. In Europe, rarely have we been in a position whereby we can assure qualification by not losing our next two games. Not even having to win them. A goalless draw tonight and a scoring draw in the return in Prague sees the team in the knockout phase on head-to-head results against Slavia. That assumes that Sevilla do not lose to Steaua, something which ought not to happen but the inconsistent form domestically of the Spaniards means nothing can be taken for granted.

William Gallas was effusive in his praise for the players and the manner of their victories in his absence yesterday,

When I was on the bench or in the stands I was really, really surprised at how we played. I was so happy for them when they won. I think I was like a fan – when they had an occasion to score and they didn’t I stood up and would shout. I was like a kid. We’re playing better football than any other team I’ve been involved with

High praise indeed, although when you consider one of those team’s was Mourinho’s Chelsea who were well, the equivalent of Revie’s Leeds; players capable of playing good football but the managers obsession with winning had no room for flair. There was however, a proviso to all of this.

We play good football but I have said before you can play well and win nothing, Maybe we have to play not so good but win. The most important thing is the victory. It is very important for us to win something this season and we’re ready to fight. We know the season will be long and we know we have to improve in every game. That will not be easy for us because every team wants to beat Arsenal, but we’re ready to fight them. It is not only the Champions League but the Premier League. This season I don’t know if we will win the Champions League or the Premier League, but definitely we have to win something. If we can win them both that would be good

And here, I have to take Monsieur Gallas to task. To win the Champions League and the Premiership in one season would not be good. It would be (insert your own expletive disguised as a verb here) unbelievable. But that, as they say, is getting a long way ahead of ourselves.

Arsene meanwhile has given more fodder to the stirring pot when talking about Gilberto and Lehmann’s omission from the starting line-up,

They are certainly not happy, but their attitude in training is spot on. That’s where you gain more respect. My job is to win the next game, and my players will always behave like professionals

You cannot envisage that barb being directed at Gilberto who, as far as the English media is concerned, has not been reported as saying anything contentious. It was not even a thinly disguised barb at Lehmann; more a direct shot across the bows. However, nothing would be better if that were the truth and Lehmann was simply doing his job and trying to win back his place. Arsene also threw down the gauntlet to the team to continue to improve,

We can be more efficient, we can improve our movement and I feel our conversion rate with the chances we create can be better. We will not always have five or six chances in the big games for one goal, in the big games you need one chance, one goal or two chances, one goal. We can improve in many aspects. What I thought was important at the start of the season was to win to give confidence and belief to the team because we had not a lot. The test is how can we put in consistent performances and how well we deal with big games. I hope we can become invincibles again, but I want to see that first

Some people are just never satisfied. And long may that continue. The point regarding chance conversion is pertinent when you look at the Sunderland and Bolton games, although not so much the latter. The conversion rate in that match was about one in three but Sunderland showed more profligacy in front of goal than had perhaps been the norm. The assertion about the big games though is true but in the tougher matches this season – Sevilla, Tottenham and West Ham – the team have been converting about one in two of their chances but much more importantly, the defence held together, conceding just one goal in those three games. It is those two combined that have propelled the team so far and long may that continue.

Enjoy tonights match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Hello, good blog. But Do you think you culd put more air in your segmnets, it would make it easyer to read.

  2. I mostly agree with your team selection, although I still have a sneaky suspicion that Lehman could be back for this game, which would enable Wenger to assess his readiness to return to the premiership.

  3. Passenal

I don’t think that will happen. The previous ‘rotation’ of goalkeepers has always been in domestic cup competitions and I think Arsene has made his choice now until Almunia has a bad game. I don’t think he will persevere with him beyond that, recalling Lehmann immediately. In both cases though, I think they are in the top spot for one season only with Fabianski taking over in 2008-09. The only way I can see that altering is if we win the league with Almunia in goal all season or if Arsene signs a proven Premiership ‘keeper in January or next summer.

    YW

  4. I have a feeling that Gilberto will start against Liverpool.

  5. One of the interesting things about Wenger is he rarely changes his team based on his opponents – he has HIS team, it is the BEST team, and his opponents can change THEIR team if they want. It is the opposite approach to Benitez.

And when he DOES do it, like two years ago in the CL when he played 5 in midfield, it was always in the same way…you could almost feel how loth he was upset his most loved 4-4-2.

So I doubt Lehman plays today…or any other day, so long as almunia does ok. Nor will Gilberto play against either team, so long as Gallas and Flamini are healthy

  6. I think YW’s team is correct for tonight but I was hoping Flam would start against Liverpool and I just think why do we need to go into that game with tired players? I hope I am wrong and Gilberto gets to play one of those games, or unless flam gets subbed off after 60 mins today – that would be OK.

Despite playing a czech team, I think Rosicky needs the rest due to his hamstrings. 3 games a week is not possible just like old freddie.

Gallas wont have an issue with tiredness. the centre back position is not the toughest for fatigue and I think more benefit comes from playing and sharpening up.

I’d like to see Hleb given a bit of a rest too if possible. he will be very important at Anfield.

As for Lehmann I think his days are really numbered. I agree with YW that Fabi could be our ‘keeper by next season. wenger will probably buy another young keeper for third choice in the winter/summer depending on when lehmann leaves.

  7. I think that tiredness isn’t really an issue at this time of the season. Gallas hardly had to break sweat against Bolton.

It will be the small knocks, that we don’t know about, that can make the difference.

Hleb, Cesc & Kolo are the players we don’t want to go to Anfield without, so if it is possible to protect them it should be done.

I agree on the ‘keeper issue. Jens may get back in at some stage but it will be this season only. There could be the situation, where Almunia goes as well, if his position as no 1 is not established.

Then we need 1 or 2 in, depending how highly Mannone & the younger Pole are rated.

    YW-
Revie’s Leeds certainly did play with a great deal of flair but unfortunately they were also the most bastard like team ever to play the game in England.

John Giles summed them up – sumptuously gifted but the worst “over the top” merchant you would come across.

  8. I think we should aim to rest Cesc and Hleb. Those two have been ever present this season and I’m not sure it makes sense to risk them for too long tonight. With all due respect to Flamini, I feel we would be able to cover his abscence against Liverpool if needed.

    What do people think about:

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Eboue Diarra/Denilson Flamini Walcott
    Adebayor Eduardo

Lehman, Bendtner, Gilberto, Rosicky, Diarra/Denilson, Hleb, Hoyte

That squad should have enough for Slavia Prague (especially as we don’t absolutely need to win). I just think that a rest for Cesc and Hleb would increase their hunger even more and have them chomping at the bit for Liverpool. I’ve put Hleb on the bench because we just don’t have another player that can do the things he does, whereas Cesc can be replaced (albeit not as good) by Denilson. The other option is to go a bit more defensive and bring in Gilberto alongside Flamini, although I don’t think Slavia deserve such a conservative approach.

  9. Oops forgot Diaby

    Try

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Eboue Diaby Flamini Walcott
    Adebayor Eduardo

Lehman, Bendtner, Gilberto, Rosicky, Denilson, Hleb, Hoyte

I don’t think Rosicky should start yet if the reports about his dodgy hamstrings are anything to go by. He should come on as an early sub to give him some match time before Liverpool.

  10. wenger will always use at least 2 of his ball players if available. the 3 ball players are Hleb, Cesc and Rosicky. Eboue wont start tonight but may come on to relieve Hleb for the last 30 minutes.

I would try and rest Flam, Hleb and Cesc after 60 mins, but unfortunately some games are not always as easy as they seem before kick off.
probably Diaby, Gilberto and Eboue to come on in their places, though wenger often sees things differently to the rest of us. for example I think he thinks Flam can handle 3 games in a week.

that guy has so much energy, so he can ‘handle’ it, but the question is, are we losing 5% of his ability if we do that? sometimes that extra little edge wont show up in players stats after the match. I expect Flam would cover 12,000 metres against Liverpool and maybe his pass success rate would be just as high, but the stats cant show things like the risk level of the pass and creativity levels, which may have dropped.

  11. gazzap, wouldn’t you class Diaby as a ball player?

  12. nando has a good point, AW doesn’t really rest players once they are playing well.

For the next few games (apart from the cc) I think that AW will stick with the same team. It is important to keep the momentum going, and if we can qualify from our group early then AW will be able to rest key players.

I really like the way the team is balanced at the moment. The is alot of pressure on the players but in this case it is a good thing as it comes from the internal competition for places.

Flamini & Almunia know that one poor game could spell the end of their run in the team, as bert & Jens will surely jump at any chance they get. While other players, especially Walcott, Eduardo & even Diaby will believe that they can follow Flamini’s footsteps.

I’m counting on our players to perform tonight. If only I could find my scarf!

  13. Liverpool fans are all going crazy because Rafa keeps resting players, and we’re all chatting about who we should rest and why!

We should play our best team, we don’t want to start tinkering with a winning formula. The players are professional athletes, I am sure they are fine and would be offended if they were rested!

I am wondering if Bendtner and Gilberto had been playing all the matches this season and doing well whether anyone would be talking about resting players?

I think people believe Flamini and Adebayor are inferior players, that’s why there is so much subtle discontent amongst gooners.

  14. in comparison to other players at other clubs yes, in comparison to Ros, Hleb and Cesc, no.

  15. but look at fergie. he rests layers at man u and no one says he is tinkering. there is a big difference between resting a player and making wholesale changes right throughout your team on match day like Liverpool do. Man U know there strongest line up but still were able to rest Ronaldo on Saturday and win comfortably. the way Rafa does it is wrong and if I were a liverpool fan I would be seething because they look like blowing a genuine title chance.
same goes for us. I am not questioning that Flam or Ade should be the first choice players, but I would still rest them in some games. I would not like any of my key players in the front 6, playing 3 full games in a week. the defenders and GK can handle it, (though Clichy covers a lot of ground for a left back). but ideally in the midweek game I would be looking at taking off the key players after 60 minutes if at all possible.

  16. I wish Jens and Gilberto returns because of the upcoming crucial two games against POOL and MANU. We need Gilberto to assist in headings as POOL are going to hoof the ball higher with Crouch playing. We also need Jens agility to save us from some of the classy shots we might be confronted with.

In any case, why does POOL play by hoofing the ball? They played same against Everton and watching both teams kick the ball to the sky was a horrible footie for me.

  17. Howard after Lehmanns latestout burst I doubt he will play for AFC again. Gilberto should play against Liverpol regardless.

  18. lehman will never play again for us. he has lost the plot completely and doesn’t desreve to play for us anymore. good riddance as far as i am concerned. (however average almunia is)

  19. I love Mad Jens.

No matter, whether we like it or not everything he currently says is true. None of them have won medals. No offense to Mauel but he has not won me over yet, he still has quite a few more games to do it though. I think Jens is just showing the kind of attitude which got him to be a world class GK, fight and bottle. Rather he fought the opposing team though and I would much rather have him on my team.

  20. but he fights anyone, including his own team and in this case his manager. its not good for team morale. the togetherness of the current team is absolutely key to where we are right now. Lehmann is trying to disrupt that for his own ends, which have nothing to do with ARenal and everything to do with playing for Germany in the summer.
Arsenal pay his wages and his latest criticism of wenger and almunia is not far short of misconduct.

I dont think he should play for us ever again.

I hope Gilberto comes on tonight though.

  21. his comments are ridiculus, no they haven’t won anything because he was the goalie at the time and in the past few years the entire team has been changed. this is a new arsenal team who are growing and improving. i do think almunia is second rate however lehman (who never should have been offered a new contract in the first place) is clearly past his best and his attitude to the other players and disrespect to wenger is totally not on especially as this “new team” are all about the team spirit. personally i like the look of fabianski and although he will probably make mistakes no doubt almunia will do as well (ie the sunderland second goal)
