Just William, Arsene & Co With A Bit Of Merida

Giving the captaincy to William Gallas seemed to be a bit of a curve ball by Arsene in the summer yet it is reaping benefits already as the Frenchman has discovered humility, apologising to the staff at the club for being, well, the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. William is quoted as saying,

I know it might have been difficult for the rest of the group because I wasn’t always smiling when I was in the dressing room…So I want to say sorry to all the players and all the staff

Sadly for him, it comes a no surprise he was a miserable sod during the time he has been out. It must be frustrating for him to be injured and also watching the team go on a long winning run immediately he is out of the side. I am sure, provided Domenech does not push him too hard, that he will be back for the Bolton game, probably at the expense of Senderos. Without wishing to be a Merchant of Doom, there is no way, surely, that Arsene can contemplate him returning at Anfield given last season’s debacle under similar circumstances.

Talking of Domenech, Arsene was reported to be offering an olive branch and putting their feud behind them, for the good of the French team. It depends really on your interpretation of the words used as to whether or not the hatchet is buried somewhere other than in Domenech’s head,

My relationship with the French boss so far? There is no need to make a great fuss about it anymore

Hmmm, more diplomatic way of saying, “I think he is an idiot but I am fed up with the media attention on this subject“, is where Arsene’s true feelings lie. In a true patriotic bitesize sop to the French press and TV, he has held out a true olive branch for this weeks matches,

I am keen to accept for a decisive qualification match an Arsenal player, who is slightly injured, can play

Who can that be? Not William by any chance? Perhaps Flamini has a small knock? Either way, should they come back less than fully fit, that phrase may well come back to haunt him. The club is in a no win situation with the nations holding the power to decide who is fit and who is not, this is more an acceptance that whatever Arsene says, Domenech is going to ignore him over fitness matters and go his own stellar route.

It seems that once again the international break is the sign of formenting media dissent in the ranks. Joachim Low has told Jens that if he is not back in the Arsenal first team by December, he will have to move in January otherwise he is not going to be the Number One any more. As if Lehmann needed any more encouragement to throw a strop. It is a tough decision for him because there is no guarantee he will come back straight away given that Almunia has performed well in his absence. A debate that neither side of the fence can win decisively because no matter what daggers Lehmann may put in the back of the Spaniard, football is about current form not what you have done in the past. Whilst the assertion that Almunia has not won anything with the club in his career is correct, Jens is merely deflecting attention away from the fact that in two of his appearances this season, he has dropped a huge ricket. That should not be held entirely against him for aside from those he has not conceded any goals in the rest of the playing time but they have put unnecessary pressure on the rest of the team, meaning either ninety minutes of chasing what should have been a comfortable game or dropping the only points of the season.

Nicklas Bendtner has been quoted in the Danish media as saying he may well move on if he does not make the grade at Arsenal. Which is correct. The headlines no doubt will scream about him wanting out but the truth is exactly as he calls it,

I will stay at Arsenal to fight for my chance and in case it doesn’t work, I will join a different club permanently

In other words, if I don’t make the grade here, I’ll have to move on to have a career. Alas the media choose not to see it like that and will be stirring up a crock to give the impression that all is not well at The Emirates. His national team coach chooses to add petrol to those flames. Morten Olsen is quoted as saying,

A young player like him needs to play matches. It’s up to his coach to judge but he needs to get more playing time soon

That may come post January and the vested interest of Olsen should not be dismissed. Bendtner will, I think, be more of a challenge come the time of the heavy pitches when fatigue becomes more of an issue later in games and also as between now and December, there are just about two games every week for the first team squad with the climax of the Euro 2008 Qualifying Campaign coming round next month.

Fran Merida is hoping to garner positive attention this season, the current bout of media interest though is sadly for the wrong reasons. A Spanish Civil Court has ordered the player – not the club – to pay €3.4m in compensation for his ‘development’ costs although it is widely assumed that Arsenal will foot the bill. It is not surprising that Barcelona took this course of action for it hides in many respects their own administrative shortcomings, similar to those shown in the case of Fabregas where it is rumoured that on Laporta’s first day at the club, he found a file on his desk from his predecessor concerning the player with a note saying, “You’ll have to explain how this one got away“.

That the courts were involved shoots more holes in Blatter’s recent assertion that football must stay out of the legal circle, be seen to be above the law and resolve it’s own disputes. Barcelona complained about Merida, and Fabregas for that matter, to those authorities about Arsenal and had their cases thrown out. This ruling whilst in their favour creates them some problems. For example, they are likely to have to foot a number of costs in similar cases where they have taken players from Spanish clubs yet it offers them some protection as it seems that Merida simply walked out on them for several months beforehand. That does not appear to be ‘correct behaviour’ and possibly counted against him in the judge’s eyes. At the end of the day though, €3.4m does not seem too high a price to pay for someone who is deemed to have huge potential.

As I mentioned earlier it might create more problems for the Catalans that it solves. For starters, they will have to now start paying for players rather than just whisking them off but also, they are seen to ruling by fear. ‘If you don’t sign professional terms with us, we will sue you for development costs‘ hardly builds an endearing workplace ethic, ruling by fear something that they should be all too unhappily familiar with. Whether that enters the head of a youngster whose cranium has been turned by the sparkling lights of the city or club is another matter.

And we thought this was going to be a quiet international week.

Hasta mañana

  1. Interesting post Yogi i entirely agree with Bendtner who is obviously going to look to at least get a loan deal in jan should he not get any playing time before then. It looks increasingly likely that wont happen but the one point you made that i dont agree with is you mention when the heavy grounds come, i cant remember the last time a PL player played in mud.I remember when i first saw Arsenal the players had to struggle through inches of a combination of sand and thick slush. Professional players these days dont know their born with the billiard table surfaces they play on now such is the expertise of groundsmanship and technology in drainage systems. Gallas seriously owes us some performances as he appears very injury prone and your right poor big Phil is almost certain to give way, it will be interesting to see how he performs and leads the team. Heres hoping!

  2. Surely Bendtner will play when Adebayor goes to the ANC in February.

  3. Bendtner for me has far greater potential than Adebayor. Surely he will get play time in Jan.

  4. Paddy you make a good point however a gut feel tells me Eduardo will get the nod over him. Its going to be if Big Nic is going to be happy coming off the bench.

  5. Bendtner will not be going on loan again – he will try to break into the first team this season and as he says make a permanent move if it doesn’t work out. I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

Ade and RVP are doing well at the moment, so he’s hardly going to get a start ahead of them. He just has to be patient as he will definitely start in the Carling and probably F.A. cup too. He will also get opportunities when Ade is away in Jan, plus there will be injuries, suspensions and tiredness as well as substitute appearances. Patience is a virtue he should develop along with his football skills.

  6. Ok, the media rejoice in twisting stories but this Bendtner boy is not entirely innocent as well. There’s some veiled threats in his comments. Kind of wrning that ” if you won’t start me I will quit Arsenal”. Judging from Olsen’s comments, one can sense that that’s the mood in the Danish camp as well ( and I have a sneak suspision that its these people who are exerting too much presure on the boy). They are of the opinion that Wenger is not really giving their boy the ’special treatment’ he deserve. But given that even Gilberto, Lehmann, Denilson and Walcott are all “benching”, this is totally unfair and have no ground for justification whatsoever.

Bentner must take note that Wenger has an embarassment of riches in talented young players. Why should Wenger consider his a special case and rush him ahead of other equally talented starlets? He will do very well to learn a thin or two from Almunia,Traore, Hoyte, Clinchy, RVP, Ade, & co.

He is a smashing lad but if that is the mentality he posesses, he can just sod off with his talents, we don’t want another ‘Incredible Sulk’.

  7. I can’t imagine Arsenal paying that Merida fee. That judgement, if correctly reported, would be farcical. Future earnings?! He was a free agent to do as he pleased. Maybe the NBA will sue Coca Cola, because if I hadn’t had the temptation of Coke, I’d have drunk large quantities of milk, providing the essential quantities of calcium required to boost my 5′7 frame to 7′3, ensuring my hall of fame status and increased shirt revenue’s for the Chicago Bulls.

Sounds to me like some small-time court judgement that will be pushed to a higher court and over-turned. Where would it end? Didn’t David Beckham train with West Ham as a youngster before going to Man Utd? Young players move all over the place before they sign professional contracts, trying to judge which academy during the players youth was responsible for his blossoming as a football talent is impossible.

  8. I can foresee problems with the team with Gallas as Captain. He tends to lend himself to too much sulking even when things appear to be rosy.
Sit and think for one moment what would happen to teamspirit when things aren’t going too bright for us. Or in the worst case scenario, if he were to be dropped for lack of form.
Before the season even kicked off he moaned about the lack of ambition, stating he might be tempted to walk if things do not change. You do not expect such rubbish from a senior player still in the team. Lundjberg had left the team before he made his regretable comments. So that could be excused, but still difficult to accept wholly coming from a player who has been with the club for almost 9years. I believe Arsene will come to regret ever appointing Gallas Captain in the 1st place. I earnestly hope not. Which brings to mind the Chelsea assertions that he promised to score an own goal if he was forced to play against his wishes. From the experiences we have had so far of him, could there be an element of truth in these Chelsea assertions? For the sake of the team and unity, would it be wise to continue with Toure as Captain regardless of whether Gallas is picked or not for the 1st team? Another concern is that as the highest paid player in the team, how many times has he actually played for the 1st team since he joined? And out of these, how many times has he excelled and played very well?
For me Diarra would be a better option in that position and sell Gallas in the January transfer window> Thank you.

  9. I don’t believe for one second that Bendtner’s comments contained any kind of veiled threats.

Arsene, Arsenal & Team Bendtner ( the player plus his agent father) sat down and fully discussed the player’s prospects at Arsenal prior to him signing a new 5 year contract earlier this year.

Team Bendtner would have been made fully aware of what was required if the player was to succeed at the club, including potential timescales for him to make a real breakthrough into the first team.

Bendtner’s reported comments simply state what was & is already known to all parties…that he will try and forge a successful career at the club, but if things don’t work out, then he’s likely to move elsewhere instead. That’s fair enough in my books.

Bendtner is being patient and also, I believe, showing a bit of humility, which for somebody so confident in his own abilities is a good sign.

Incidentally, we shall find out in the next few days if Adebayor is actually going off to the ACON in January 2008, or not.

If his Country, Togo, fails to beat Mali in a qualifying match during this international break, then Togo will not be making the trip to Ghana, where the tournament is being held.

The prospect of Adebayor being available during January for first team games may also impact upon the chances of Bendtner getting more first team action as well.

  10. “Without wishing to be a Merchant of Doom, there is no way, surely, that Arsene can contemplate him returning at Anfield given last season’s debacle under similar circumstances.”

I honestly hope you’re not serious. Firstly it’s worth remembering that the indomitable penis of Cpt. Gallas scored our only goal that day, secondly the circumstances weren’t similar they were in fact entirely different. Confidence was rock bottom after being knocked out of two (or was it three) cup competitions and too far off the pace in the league and players struggled to be motivated. Our confidence, barring any unexpected comedowns, is set to be at an all time high by the time we play Liverpool in a couple of weeks time.

  11. Some interesting points here YW.

Gallas: In the few matches we have seen him as captain he has shown an obvious determination to be just that. I see that as a good thing. The internationals, this time, should be a help in getting him match fit.

Lehmann: Although he could still be our best ‘keeper for now he almost certainly won’t be with us next season. With this in mind it would surely be a mistake to not to continue with Almunia, who has certainly been good enough to deserve an extended run to prove he is capable of being our permanent no 1. If he isn’t then we need to bring in 1/2 ‘keepers, depending how highly Mannone is rated at the club.

Bentner: He is at the same point that RVP was when he joined the club. You would expect similar management of his career by AW. 20 min subs + a few starts. RVP became a regular starter, aged 22/23, which allows a good 10 years at the top if all goes well. Bentner’s problem is that he is an understudy to younger men than RVP was.

It all depends on just how good he actually is. If he is indeed as good as predicted he will get the same chance that TH14 had & become undroppable even for the likes of DB10.

    I hate international weeks.

  12. Really, guys, let us not worry about the minor plots such as Bendtner’s, Gallas’ or the Gilberto’s not playing and concentrate on the big picture – win the premiership. Do not let the press or other people to unsettle us.

It is a common practice to try to undermine your opponents who is doing better than you by talking up “unhappiness within the ranks”. If you were to ask any player who has not played for a while in any club in the land whether they are happy not playing, you will surely get the standard answer. So why fall into this trap year in and year out?

Let’s build up confidence by talking positive things and by winning on the pitch.

  13. yeah I dont think you can blame Gallas for our defeat that day. The whole team looked downbeat. OK so crouch is very tall and we had short centre backs, but that was not the only reason we lost.

Bendtner will get his chance. wenger always gives players chances in the end. but sometimes they get impatient and want to leave to play NOW. in the long term that does their career no good whatsoever. Its unlikely a big team will buy them and then put him straight into the first team. AC milan might be interested but does he seriously think he will get any nearer their first team than he is already near ours? If Ade misses a game then Bendtner plays, but Ade is playing well and staying fit. thats whats it like sometimes in football.

I think Bendtner is an excellent player. probably a far better finisher than Ade but can he make things happen for the team like Ade does or will he rely on other people to make things happen? we will find out. But 4 strikers at a big club is not too many. Had he been a year older he would have played about 30 games last season for us!

  14. With the fixtures coming thick and heavy at the turn of the year, I could see Niklas get quite a bit of playing time, especially in the cup competitions. It would be quite interesting if he forged a partnership with Eduardo… Then we could have two Big Man/Small Man partnerships (ADE-RVP and BENDTNER-DUDU) which we could rotate. I know Rafa at ‘Pool gets a lot of stick for rotation, but let’s be honest, a top four squad challenging in all competitions needs to rotate some or the players will be dead on their feet by March. Niklas still has an important part to play for us even this, in his first full season with the first team squad.

  15. I think giving Gallas the captaincy was a stroke of genius.

I too had my misgivings but I knew after the first game that Wenger had made the right decision.

Did you see any post-match huddles before Gallas became captain?

He’s got that gritty character and fighting spirit that Henry didn’t have but Vieira and Adams before him did.

You don’t see Gallas acting like the head cheerleader or telling players to come over and dance with him instead of celebrating with the rest of the team.

Henry didn’t believe in this team, Gallas does.

You know how I know that’s true?

While on the sidelines, Gallas is really upset he’s not doing his bit alongside the lads.

While injured, Henry engineered his transfer to Barcelona.

While we’ve won 11 from the opening 12 fixtures in all competitions. topping our domestic and CL table, Henry’s struggling to make an impact in Spain.

    Oh, and Wenger’s re-signed.

Does anyone else think Monsieur Centre of Attention regrets leaving all this behind to get hauled off after 65 mins for a kid as well as playing second fiddle to Messi ?

  16. Further to the above, we all know Henry’s ego is hurting with all the talk of Arsenal being better off without him.

Even after all that ^, I do hope he comes back so we can say a proper goodbye.

    He should definitely come back on a match day too. I’d love to sing ‘Thi-erry Hen-ry, Thi-erry Hen-ry! Thi-erry Hen-ry, Thi-erry Hen-ry!’ one more time…

  17. I would chuckle if Barca dont win anything and Arsenal do. I dont wish him bad things but it would be ironic. I read yesterday that henry says he is missing London. I think he may be starting to realise that he has been stupid with his marriage and daughter as well. his ego got too big for him to handle.
when his career is over, I think he will reflect on what he has done and have regrets.
Until about 2004 Henry was everything to this team but after that, when his ego took over and he became very arrogant, he actually started to take away from the team despite scoring sublime goals every now and then. He will never lose that ability but to be the best you have to stay humble and hard working and TH was far from that in the end.

  18. I think the issue of Gallas being made captain is a very interesting insight on how Wenger works. He was extremely spoilt to start off having Adams as captain followed by Vieira.

When Vieira left, everyone knew who there was only 1 choice for Captain. Henry was, to most, the greatest player to have donned an Arsenal shirt ‘He deserved it’. But we all knew that he was not captain material so appointing him was and unavoidable mistake. He is sulky, but in the silent dangerous way that terrified the younger players. So much that Ade resorted to that ridiculous ‘dance of homage’ to help the great man forget his latest howler.

This pre-season we all agreed once again that Bert deserved the captaincy, Gallas was an ex Chelsea player who had missed most of last season through injury, we were shocked that AW would even consider him. But AW is in love with psychology and the age old saying ‘a leaders actions are reflected in his men’ (or something like that!) probably explains why Gallas got the job.

Gilberto is a solid player, he does a quiet but important job in midfield, yet I doubt many will call his work inspiring. While Gallas is a serial moaner and general pain-in-the-arse where nothing is good enough, but his PR team will call him a perfectionist. In another stroke of genius, by appointing Gallas as captain not only has AW got rid of the incessant bitching, leaving a more humble and positive Frenchman but he can expect the driven uncompromising nature to filter through the team.

Captaincy is a job, not an award and should be given to the player who will do the best job, the question of who deserved it is irrelevant. Arsene knows!

  19. um not impressed with Bendtner’s interviews,we have a lot of talented youngsters who are not playing week in week out but you dont hear them giving out interviews like he does.its fine if you are going to fight for your place but where is the need to add that if not you will be leaving permanently he needs to be a bit more humble otherwise eventhough Van Persie and Ade wre apparent tear-aways befire they arrived they have shown little sign of that and um sure if his confidence turns into cockyness then Wenger will let him go and i have no doubt Wenger if need be can find another gem,we jus dont need people rocking the boat this season.
Gallas as captain is a stroke of genius, because now all the pressure Gallas was tryna put on the squad to perform during pre-season has all shifted on to him because he now walks ino a team that have been doing really well without him and if he is such a winner then he can only make them better,we need a talker on the ground and to some extent Toure is but you feel Gallas would be a step up from Toure as far as being a leader and the good thing above all is that the pressure is on Gallas to lead by example and i feel we are about to see the best of him.

  20. Good posts gazzap + Unattractive Man.

  21. Bendtner has a big future and needs to be talked to take his time. I’ve seen this gem play a few times and believes we have another top player in the making.

For me, I even rate him than Adebayor but I pray that he stays and just bid his time; he’s only 19 and will get a lot of chances to display what he’s capable of doing. He should slow down and not put pressure on Arsene. In some games I’ve felt like we could’ve done better if brought on.

I wish I could get a chance to talk to him; he will have a big impact on the Arsenal like Anelka did if he gets his chance. He will be a huge success, I know that, he just needs to cool it awhile.

  22. Woah there everybody with this Henry bashing.

The man did great things for our club, stood by the club the season before last and simply decided to move on. Speculating about his decisions to leave his wife is not for us. The man split with his wife some consideration please.
He made comments this week about how much he misses London and loves the club we should be applauding him, not pouring scorn.

  23. henry still loves the arsenal, he cant stop talking about us!! he regrets the break up. its like something out of a jane austin novel!!

sorry henry but you broke our hearts so we aint taking you back.

  24. Yes I agree we should stop this Henry bashing. I have been an Arsenal fan since I was 10 years old but I have never seen a player of the likes of Henry in our team. I am sure some will say Bergkamp or even Liam Brady but Henry is the epitome of speed, power, strength and sublime skills. Liam has the cultured left foot(of which this blog is named I venture to guess) that he was pinging inch perfect passes all over the pitch and Bergkamp the eye for the pass and fantastic ball control. But Henry helped to bring us to where we are today by scoring all those fantastic goals. Do not diss him just because he wanted to try something new( plus his personal problems is just that ,personal) and spoil all those wonderful memories he had gifted us. Let move on as we have new heroes in the pitch now. Up the Arsenal
