Toure, Adebayor and Internationals

It seems that one thumping of a mediocre Premier League team has given Manchester United the bragging rights for the title race, such as it is at this stage of the season, with both Evra and Tevez claiming that they are a better side than Arsenal. We shall see whether such confidence is well founded or misplaced in about seven months time. The Arsenal players meanwhile are playing down such talk with Kolo Toure stating,

For the minute we don’t talk about it. We just focus on what we are doing well, enjoy it and make our fans happy. At thed end we will see how far we go. The season is really long

In an age when the lurid activities or bragging is the standard by which newspapers judge the quality of a player, the humility displayed by Toure during interviews is a refreshing change. For a big club, Arsenal have very few adverse headlines which is a testament to the ethos of those involved and the awareness of the players of their responsibilities.

The subject of what has changed in the squad is touched on and Toure believes that they are more patient when trailing or level. Which is more or less the same as Adebayor said at the weekend in that the spirit within the squad is much improved on last time around. Indeed, the Togolese forward believes the confidence stems from pre-season when,

we felt at our training camp that we had a good side

There is no doubt that winning breeds confidence but perhaps more than anything a poor result shows the character of a squad. This season, the draw at Blackburn has been the only one so far and it has brought forth a run of ten wins. It is amazing how one team can be the spark for such runs, reminiscent of the 3 – 1 home defeat in 98 and the 3 – 3 draw at Highbury a couple of seasons later which were the catalysts for moving up a gear on the pitch. Time will tell if history is repeating itself.

The international break is not quite so arduous this time around for some of the players. Only Gilberto and Adebayor are out of Europe during the fortnight, the former potentially playing two games for Brazil, the latter just the one for Togo. With it being a home game, you would have to say that the likelihood is that he will be off to the ACN in the winter which is good for the player not so helpful for the Club. In the lead up to that, I would not be surprised if Bendtner and Eduardo are given significantly more playing time than they might otherwise expect to get them up to speed with the rest of the team. The plus point is that Adebayor ought to be back at the Club on Monday or Tuesday with the Togo v Mali fixture taking place this coming Saturday so for Bolton, he ought to be raring to go. Despite a languid style, I believe he has more stamina than a number of the other players, it is just he looks tired from minute one.

Indeed looking at the fixtures, the calls for rotation of the squad were a little unnecessary with Toure, Eboue, Rosicky, Gallas, Clichy, Sagna, Flamini and Diaby all playing one game in the next fortnight. The pity of it is that they take place next Wednesday. It is good for those recovering for injuries as the longer they wait to recover, the more certain you can be that they are not being rushed back by their national coaches. For some it will be a fortnight’s break without a game and that can only be good. A rare occasion indeed when Arsene will not be worried about overuse of those players. For the rest, it is simply a case of wait and see on the injury front and hoping that any injuries incurred are minor, or more preferrably, that none at all are sustained.

On the subject of Internationals, the age old weary complaint that Wenger does not breed English players rears its ugly head with Martin Samuel the guilty party this time, proving that you can take the man out of the tabloids but you can never take the tabloids out of the man. It is a pointless piece; Wenger will, according to Samuel, be judged to have failed in this area because there are not enough Arsenal players in the England squad. The problem is that Samuel is not berating him for not signing any old tat, it is that they don’t come through the Academy ranks fast enough. The article is not an ‘Arsenal hating’ one, nor even one that hates Arsene; indeed, Samuel admires his footballing philosophy and the ‘goods on the pitch’, lamenting that the current England squad contains

at least a single representative from each of the top 11 clubs in England, bar one. The best one

I won’t disagree on that statement but the problem I have with this argument is that aside from it being tiresome, Samuel answers his own problem,

His job is to produce the best team for Arsenal and it should not be bolstered by artificial charity cases

So why bother having a pop at Le Boss? Why not turn his ire on the people who deserve it, namely the administrators that say we can only basically look inside the M25 and Home Counties to train English players but can quite happily import Europeans, Africans and Americans? The nonsensical rulings are the reason, Mr Samuel. Don’t blame the worker trying to do the best for his employers, blame the red tape.

In a backhanded way though it is a compliment to Wenger and a slap in the face for every other Premier League club. Samuel obviously wants the players to come through the Arsenal ranks to learn the game properly as opposed to being sunk in the mire of long ball merchants that currently proliferate English football.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. A litte ire in you again this morning Yogi! Love it. It seems the United rivalry agrees with you. Me too. In typical united style they are first to start the talk, worrying that they have not learnt not to tangle with Wenger’s sharpest of tongues. Having said that Fergie is for now quiet. Of course it is early for the chat, so for now we shall do the talking on the pitch. That Ade’s stamina should need defending is ridiculous. Alongside Clichy he covers the most turf and he carries a larger frame. A Lion!

  2. YW

I agree with Samuel. I’ve said several times on this blog that there are equally young up and coming English players we can bring to the Arsenal. It’s a sensitive topic for Arsenal fans that many don’t want to admit, it’s not good for business and PR for the club to be looking outside for players all the time. Anytime we want a player, GK,CB etc Arsene solution, look outside.

Arsene seem to be patient with foreign players than English players. Alladierie was not performing for years but he urged him to stay. Even poor Baptiste was nearly retained even though he was crap. Almunia, Song, Senderos, Eboue and Diaby etc are not really top players but Arsene encouraged them to stay and work hard. Flamini was not really performing great for years but is now getting to the top because he’s been given time to work on his game. Compare same with English players who were not doing so well but not encouraged to keep working and you have a problem. Still we do have a GK problem, Jens and even Almunia may not be the right replacement while Fabianski still need time however, there are some good GK around, say Green but I bet that Arsene will go for another foreign GK.

I know its a sensitive issue to discuss on this blog but we need to be realistic about some of these drawbacks for the Arsenal and talk openly about it. We have a lot of academy players coming through but its not enough.

My own suggestion, look inside to fill positions first before looking outside for the right player.

  3. “Don’t blame the worker trying to do the best for his employers, blame the red tape.”

    Well said, Yogi.

  4. Why would Evra and Tevez need to claim they are a better side than us other than to reassure themselves? Perhaps the lack of depth exposed as their Carling Cup team crashed out to Coventry has undermined their confidence. Talk is cheap. It was only a few weeks back that Spurs were claiming that they were going to take our place in the top four and qualify for the CL.

  5. Howard, do you just create stories to support your argument! Baptista nearly retained? Ok sure! Aliadiere is now keeping a bunch of young Englishman out of Boro’s team. Name the quality English lads then price them. Truth is players like Ashley made it for us and got that chance. The boss is completely without prejudice so why would he be anti-English? Tune in Howard!

  6. I know it’s clutching at straws a little, but, and this is a big but considering who it is, Arsenal are represented. A certain A. Cole. I think you’ll find this little £££££$%&((*&%^$££££ came through the youth ranks at Arsenal. Others that are now begining to feature, or are being lauded by the press to appear, are Bentley and Pennant. Aresenal produce them, but these individuals seem to be up themselves.

  7. The absence of English players at Arsenal is not a sensitive issue on this blog – just a very tiresome one. There are a lot of comments attached to Samuels article which make the case succinctly and intelligently. They get seen but not really read by those nationalists determined to see only favouritism. Wenger does display favouritism to intelligent, patient and talented players from wherever they come.

Howard asks why Flamini was allowed time to work to achieve a place in the team. The difference is that he was prepared to. Bentley demanded a place and wanted out when he wasn’t guaranteed it. Similarly Sidwell wasn’t prepared to earn his place. The anti-english argument is intellectually bankrupt and, at its core, racist.

  8. What the hell are you on about Howard, Eboue and Diaby not top players? You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. You’re obviously a media read’n'believer, how anyone can follow Arsenal and still not understand the lack of English quality compared with the talent we bring in, astounds me. What you’re trying to say about Arsene not giving our English players time strikes of one phrase, polishing turds. Of all the football managers in the world, Arsene is the one who will see the talent and persist with it until it blossoms, if he seems limited talent, he allows them to go elsewhere to blossom into their limited best. ie. Sidwell, Bentley. They’ve gone from good players to very good players as they’ve blossomed, but they will never be great players.

Huge respect for Martin Samuel, a great writer. As you’ve said Yogi, it’s a complimentary article, and with a bit of a silly point. You can understand what he’s saying though, which for me is, how unfortunate we can’t have any English players integrated/educated with this brilliant style of football.

If they’d really felt that, they should have given Ashley Cole the shaming of all time when he left us, instead papers sided with him at times, put out his wanky quotes from his book etc. Why should Arsene have to put up with English players, I’m totally sick of them, to compare someone with the humility of Kolo Toure, as you pointed out today, with the likes of Pennant and Cole, and before that, thickets like Merson and Adams. In the media this weekend, they were saying how impressive Gael Cliche was in the press conference in Bucharest, a well-spoken young man with intelligence, well of-course, all of our young foreign men are of that ilk, Arsene is looking for intelligence in young players, as much as talent. Where are the young English players with brains, your Martin Keowns, Lee Dixons, Steve Boulds. There’s so few intelligent English footballers that everyone knows who they are, so much so that you know they’re guaranteed either a managers or pundits job at the end of their career, such as Gareth Southgate. In Theo Walcott Arsene has obviously seen that intelligence, I remember the relief when I heard him speak for the first time after we signed him, and I realised what a well brought up young man he was. Lets hope the same is true of the other young players coming through, Gibbs, Thomas, Lansbury etc.

  9. Howard,

All the arguments have been rehearsed time and time again and they all still apply but I will throw in one that gets discussed less than the others.

Most Arsenal fans are not English. The reason is manifold. The club was the first ‘European club’, touring Europe before any other club; The club is based in London a multi-cultural, multi-national society; the globalisation of the sport through TV; international marketing; agreements with clubs in other nations. In addition the club was founded by Scotsmen and some of our greatest players from the pre-modern era are not English e.g. Liam Brady. The club does not have a mandate to provide English players.

However I think that the club is happy to take English players and indeed Englishmen still make up the biggest national chunk in the youth teams. All they have to do is reach the required level of quality, be value for money and be within the required geographical distance. They also have to not have been ruined by some oafish training regime in their early days.

I know, I know Howard I am a S**** supporter and a DD/ Usmanov agent. But then Samuels is just a jobbing hack trying to get the herd to read his stuff for wonga.

  10. Amos said it all for me. And I would like all these critics of Arsenal to explain to me why English players act like Gods even at 19 years of age. “I must play or I leave.” What’s Wenger supposed to do?

Also, can you really credit Chelsea with anyone other than Terry? It really would be the height of stupidity to say Chelsea contributed Lampard, J Cole, A Cole, etc. to the England team. How is spending stupid amounts of money to buy second rate players who happen to be English going to develop English football?

There is another problem which I would like all these great commentators to solve which is an even bigger concern. When Lansbury, Murphy and Hoyte (I think) went to the U17 tournament, they came back saying that what they found difficult was that everyone else on their team had been taught to smash the ball forward at every opportunity while they tried to play the patient build-up game. England must decide whether it wants to stay in the dark ages with Blackburn type football or join the rest of the world in playing proper football. That should be more of a worry than how many English players are at Arsenal.

  11. I agree with hboy. Except I have no respect for populist hacks, which includes Samuel even if he is throwing us some titbits. Damning with faint praise it is called.

  12. Howard, u gatta a point there but u too r not being realistic at all, first look at the base at which he keeps the foriegn players. These foriegn players are not over praised in the papers like the English players, for example if Flamin was an English player oh! my God u would hear hell being talked in papers that he is so good they are not using him, all that nonsense and which creates a different mind for the player to think that he is too good yet those journlist are not coaches to tell that, so and so is good to play, the manager knows better. Then the player will seem to be on pressure to play in the first team and with that not happening, he will definately ask for a transfer and you know Arsene is not the type of manager who will force you to stay,he will try to talk to you to stay and when you insist he will let you go. Otherwise the whole problem is with the journlist they are doing bad than good for their own English players, they should stop over praising them let them do it on the pitch than words, in other words let them show what they are on the pitch than just words please, please.

  13. Martin Samuel ought to know better.
He’d be better serving the game if he wrote an article on the scandalous situation where one of the richest associations on the Continent can’t put together a uniform and high quality training system that takes kids in young and brings them through, and which then worsens the situation by giving clubs no incentive whatsoever, with the restrictive rules highlighted by a lot of folks, to do the job themselves.
I’m sorry Howard, that applies to you too. You’d be better off directing your disappointment at the FA.
As for the comments emanating out of Manchester, that’s the best thing that can happen to the Arsenal. I’d rather players and the press hype someone else all the way, while we go about our job quietly. The players not only are free of needless pressure, but also have an incentive to reply by putting their feet, metaphorically ofcourse, in the commenters’ mouths.

  14. His article also seems to miss the fact that Cashley and Bentley both went through our Academy, so there are two Arsenal products in the England Squad. not only that but Pennant is knocking and if Sidwell had not have gone to Chelsea he would be there too.

I think we provide a few at youth level, and I am sure we will see a rise of Arsenal players in the England Squad in the future.

Yogi makes a good point that you never see adverse stories regarding Arsenal players unlike Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Ure, and maybe Wenger prefers to sign players that he knows have a balanced and sensible private life. Unfortunately given the UK pub and club culture, it is not English lads but players from Mainland Europe and beyond that generally fit into that sensible stereotype, so are more appealing to fit into the squad. not only that but they are cheaper.

However like any Arsenal fan I would like to see more English players in the squad and the one I would like is Micah Richards. I really believe despite the price he would be a asset to our squad, he can play in mulitple positions and fits into the lifestyle mould that Wenger promotes within his team.

  15. Pat, Despite what Howard says I am an Arsenal fan and I don’t care whether we have English players or not. I just want quality players with the intelligence and skill to play to AWs requirements. The matter of ‘nationality’ is the responsibility of those that care about and have some responsibility for it. Not me and certainly not Arsenal. The England team do not perfrom to people’s expectations becuase of a) their expectations and b) the FA are very poor. I would add that if I had a particular interest in the national team I would argue that the Press and Media in the country are absolutely. completely and utterly useless and best and malevolent at worst. Samuel is a fine example.

  16. United won the league last season but they are not made of steel. They have had easier fixtures than we have and there is no doubt that they have a real problem with a midfield that’s not creating, and a weak bench.

We’re stronger than them. The test is going to be how we fight on cold nights on wasting fields of Sheffield and such places.

I am backing Arsenal for the title and it’s not just because I am Gunner.

  17. Ole the test will come when we have five away games in December and the two home games are Chelski and Spurs, we have been very fortunate to have five out of eight games at home, plus Bolton makes six.

We need seven points from next 3 games including a win against MANU.

  18. The only English player worth getting is Micah Richards even if he would be overpriced. He loves Arsenal and is really talented.

  19. Howard, can’t you see that you are almost all alone in your argument?
That’s because your argument is blinded by unreasonable nationalism and is so full of holes that it reminds me of a Swiss cheese.

Do you really watch Arsenal games or just read match reports (from the Red Rants website?)? How can you claim that those players you have mentioned are not good players(especially Diaby and Eboue)?

Another prove that you are pointless is the fact that you want to label Wenger as an anti-English coach. An accusation which is clearly unfounded!!!If you know Wenger, you will know that it’s not his policy to hold back a player who is impatient enough to wait for his chances. All these young Enlish players( Bently, Sidwell, Muamba etc) you are reffering to fall in that category and wanted to thought that their chances were beter somwhere else. So, What do you want Weneger to do? Hold them at a gun point? Don’t forget that it was the young A.Cole who pushed out that outstanding Silvinho.Wenger produced Justin Hoyte, a competent right back, but Mclaren doesn’t even seems to know if he exists.

As much as I respect your rights to form an opinion I just don’t think your point is relevant here ( or at least many Arsenal fans don’t seem to agree with it). Bear in mind that its the responsibility of your government’s department of sports to ensure that proper development structures are in place at all levels. Take a hind from Nigeria and stop blaming the clubs.

  20. The “Arsene doesn’t produce any English players’” argument is indeed tiresome, but it’s also dishonest too.

The real question, to my mind, is why England produces so few proper footballers for the England
    team?

It seems to me that those few English players who may be good enough to play for Arsenal, have made progress into the England national team despite, and not because of, the coaching they received as kids and teenagers.

Let me repeat that…despite, and not because of, the coaching they received as kids and teenagers.

    Think about it.

If Arsene were running for election as Football Prime Minister in this Country, his campaign slogan would be “Technique, Technique, Technique”.

If and when kids and teenagers in this Country start to receive high quality coaching from professional coaches who really know their stuff, coaches who have a proper vision of how the game should be played – as opposed to believing that how Blackburn & Bolton play is where it’s at – then and only then will the Country start to produce players who may be good enough to be considered for selection by Arsene and Arsenal.

  21. Samuel also fails to mention how many great young English players we have coming through the ranks. Lansbury, Gibbs, Simpson, Bartley and Theo to name but a few.

Arsene said the England team will benefit from his methods within 5 years. Not that it matters anyway, its all about Arsenal for me.

Lets look forward to an injury free 2 weeks!

  22. Solgooner

I agree with you. Our worst performance at Anfield should be a draw, still we can beat them ‘cos we’ve done it before. If we can get at least a point and beat MANU at home, then I’m all for it. Just let’s look at it, game after game and see what unfolds as Toure said.

  23. Tevez and Evra have revealed how relieved to win conviencingly. This shows how really worried they were/are about the situation and that they had little belief in their ability. This is just Psychological warfare. They know very well that Arsenal is the team to beat this season. They know perfectly well that they are facing an uphill in order to keep up with all that hype the media placed upon them in the off season. They will be back in their places when we go 8 points clear with a game in hand( which will happen very soon).

  24. Touche to all of the above. Please tune in Howard. Micah would be FANTASTIC for us but at 25million+????????? Thats like 2/3 of the present team ain’t it?

  25. the problem with that fat bearded monster is he only writes to get a reaction and rarely basis it on fact.

    Here’s some facts.

Number one Bentley, Pennant, Upson, Cole have all played for England but are either injury prone, up themselves or drunks.

Then there’s Muamba, Murphy, Sidwell, Lansbury, Gavin Hoyte, Ogogo all playing in the under 17’s at some point and Justin Hoyte and Theo who should be in the England set up.

Don’t blame Wenger fat boy, blame England.

    Now all visit le-grove.co.uk

  26. Current rule restricts clubs with FA-sanctioned youth academies to sign players under 16 who live within 90 minutes of traveling time to the club. As a result a lot of talented young players are forced to play near their home despite their wish to join a top academy such as that of Arsenal’s. So when these players start to shine, their respective clubs put a very high price tags on them and eventually make a fortune from selling them. I really find this rule very unfair. If a 13yr old kid is allowed leave his family and study at a boarding school, then whats the problem with the same kid moving from say manchester Smile to north london.

  27. Actually Goonerboy it is worse than that. The majority of fans who go to England matches seem to be from clubs in leagues lower than the Prem so they are probably direct beneficiaries of this ghastly system.

  28. I have always thought that working class areas tend to be better breeding grounds for greater numbers of players. Thats why West ham always get a regular output of good youngsters. Look how many were born within 30 minutes walk of upton park.
But Arsenal should be able to get a few coming through. It seems some of the hackney and haringey kids go to spuds, and some come to us. But Arsenal focus on the ‘wealthier’ satellite towns like Milton Keynes, Watford, St Albans, Luton, Epsom, Shoreham, Northampton etc.
We have plenty of very good english players at the academy now, probably more than ever before. its up to them if they want to make it. I am sure many of them will be good enough for England even if they dont stay at Arsenal.

  29. Weah9, there’s no way Hoyte should be playing in the England squad when he can’t make the Arsenal XVI. He’s fine in the U21s (proving McLaren does know he exists).

  30. ever wondered if it is the ” mentality” of english players rather then the skill that sir wenger is not convinced about!!

  31. crafty bison,

I am not saying he should be first choice. What I am sayin is that, even when England has a defence ‘crises’ no one mentions his name(remember when Terry, Carragher, Ferdi, Micah were all limbing? none thought about him even though he is more than qulified to fill in). Are you sayin he isn’t good enough to be in Mclaren’s back up plans? Then Arsenal should offload him ASAP.

If first team football is a prerequsite, why pick Owen straight from injury when you have a couple of fully fit forwards?

  32. gilberto has the look of a bull with a blue tongue, it looks like there is a pattern in the way sir wenger gets rid of his older players, why else would he not be playing him. i hope i am wrong but i cant see him here next season!!

  33. Tend to disagree Duke

Wenger is playing Flam on the basis that he is the current incumbent through good performances but once Bert returns and solidifies our back line he will become the present incumbent.

It’s a similar story for Jens
Actually think we have missed him recently.

  34. Bert that is!

  35. Hm, 90 minutes travelling time… would that include flying time? or am I trying to circumvent the rule? I have a question, wasn’t the “locally” rule set out because the administrators were worried that the big clubs would get a monopoly on the best and brightest thereby starving the rest from the ripe pickings? The point I guess here is that the rule is tough which ever way it swings. We are Arsenal supporters and want everything the club can get whether it is the best players or trophies. The greater question must be what can be done to improve the product known as the EPL which when done will improve the English game. I would like to suggest that instead of knocking Arsenal about the lack of English players… get Wenger to hold coaching clinics for all the other EPL managers and show them what a string of passes looks like, what intelligent players actually look like and how they behave both on and off the pitch (I would love to see Fergie’s face for that).

  36. the 90 min rule is daft. its very hard for any coach to tell whether a 14 year old will really make it to premier league level by the time they are 19, let alone tell whether they are Arsenal/Man U quality, which is virtually impossible. some of the best players dont really develop until late teens. Even if Arsenal or Man u had their pick of all 13/14 year olds you can bet your bottom dollar these kids would still not be the ones representing the England team 10 years later. one or two might be. The really great ones would still crop up at other smaller clubs all round the country.
many of Arsenals young players end up in the lower leagues and a few dont even end up as professional footballers at all.

Once its apparant that the kids are top quality, usually around age 19, then you are looking at top money. Micah Richard being a very good example. 18 months ago no one knew who he was and now he is 20m rated. AW is not the sort to splash 20m on a player he can get for 5m abroad.

Theo was 12m+ at age 17 and that was a gamble. no one really knew if he’d make it athe very top level and we still dont 2 years later.

furthermore, if a top club really wants a young player then I have no doubt that that players family would move closer to the big club.

  37. so even if Arsenal did have their pick of players in say Exeter or Carlisle, we still would not be starving the rest of the country of talent as the FA would have you beleive, but maybe one or two WOULD make it and they would get the best coaching and become the best players in the world instead of almost becoming just very good but learning bad habits with poor coaches.
The FA are shooting themselves in the foot by denying good young players the best coaching.

Furthermore England need that school of excellence desperately.

  38. Aman

I just had time to read you. Yes Micah will be great and seems expensive at 25+ but at 19 years, he’ll play for us for over 10 years and looks very good investment to me. He’s an Arsenal fan so his allegiance will be unquestionable. Micah/ Toure or Micah/Gallas whichever partnership will be great and solve our CB problem for perhaps over a decade.

Will Arsene go for him? I doubt. Arsene will still stick to his Senderoses and the Djourous, who always give us nerves. Micah might rot at City until may be Chelsea or Liverpool go for him.

We have the money to buy this guy who will do a job for us like Adams did but here we are again.

  39. Howard if you were boss, Micah would be great value. No offence but im not placing too much faith in your scouting networks or ability to spot raw talent. Thing is, you’re not the boss and our’s is sensational at finding/developing talent! So you can have 30 million Rooneys or Andersons but we are in the privileged position to have 3 million Van Persies or for peanuts Fabregas’s. Very lucky indeed!

  40. Howard, you just don’t give up do you? If Richard’s was not English this would not even be an issue. He will not ‘rot’ at City – they are doing great at the moment and if they can keep it up they will do well this season. Richard’s is not the finished article so £25m + is way over-priced. Just because we have money now Arsene will not suddenly start wasting it like some lottery winner on a ’spend, spend, spend’ mission. No matter how much you might want it, Wenger will buy the players he deems suitable for Arsenal, so why not just relax and let the man who is more often right than wrong, do his job?

  41. Howard, Admit it..you are mot really an Arsenal fan at all are you? You are an England fan. Nothing wrong with that. But it distorts your expectations of the club.

  42. I see your point Howard but 25mill+ is still too much to pay. His weekly would jack up everyone else’s weekly at the Arse. Not a good look at all when we can have one of the best teams in Europe over the next 5 years at a comparatively medium wage level.
    Joga bonito baby!

  43. Damnit, Fab4 & Theo got called up for Internationals. There goes the whole squad……..

    We wait & we wonder

  44. ManU have a number of current England players, but most of those weren’t raised through their academy either.

And I don’t see why it’s a problem if a Rooney gets discovered by Everton, or a Walcott by Southampton.

Basically I’m with gazzap. The best youngsters will turn up all over the place, and develop at all different rates.

While we’re on this subject, let me mention that from time immemorial in all kinds of industries and all over the world, people who’re not doing so great like to cry out: “Just keep out the foreign competition, and then we’ll have a chance to become world beaters”.

It doesn’t work that way. No more for English footie than for British Leyland.

Keep out the foreign competition and all you get is homegrown mediocrity.

The best thing for English footie is to have the best players and the best coaches here, and for English kids to know that if they want to play the beautiful game, the level they need to get to is the level of the Denilsons and Clichys of the world.

Btw, I hope Micah Richards does come to us one day – on a free. Cos he’s looking like a great player in the making, and of course cos he’s a gooner.

  45. As for Micah Richards, I am with Howard this time. 25 million pounds which I do not believe is too much if Theo is considered to be worth 17 million pounds and Rio is valued at 23 to 24 million pounds. Look around you, how many world class center backs are there this young ( ready to play first team and yet will grow to be an even better player.) Not many and I for one strongly believe that we need a spine of world class players to be continually competing. Just imagine Fabianski, Micah, Cesc(later Denilson) and Van Persie(later Walcott) as the Arsenal spine for years to come. Sometimes you need to pay over the top to get the player you need(want). Sir Alex knows it so he was not afraid to spend on Van Nilsteroy, Rooney, Ronaldo , Rio and etc. He has nine league titles to prove the point

  46. Hail Arsenal!
