The Right Attitude And Unwelcome Guests

A real sense of bouyancy about the place at the moment and, why not? Unbeaten at the start of the season with only one draw. For Robin van Persie, it is nothing unexpected, who told The Times

What I saw [in preseason] was a play-togetherness and a great belief, and big, big quality…If we can stay together we can do amazing stuff in the future. I think we are doing it now already. We are not at the end. We are progressing every week we play

I think the key to it has been the relative stability of the line-up, changing for the most part just through injury, something van Persie commented on when talking about rotation,

I like the fact that we play together week in, week out and some teams – for example, Liverpool – switch. That’s OK if they choose to do that, but we like to be settled. I know, for example, when Cesc has the ball I know what he’s thinking about; I know what I can do. Everyone knows what they have to do. It is very, very important.Sometimes it is hard because you play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday again

There was some talk that Adebayor should be rested in one of the next two games but it really does not seem necessary to me if you look at the fixtures. The match against Sunderland is followed by an International break with two games in a fortnight, less than he has been playing recently. The beneficiaries of any enforced break this weekend would be Togo not Arsenal, in the short term at least. Let us not forget, he has played just seven games since returning from injury as well, having missed most of the pre-season. His demeanour is someone who constantly looks knackered from the first minute to the last yet he appears to have more energy than most, able to summon up the reserves to chase the ball equally hard in the latter stages and the opening minutes.

van Persie is correct is noting the team is progressing each week. The big test though for any winning side is how they react to defeat; The Invincibles reacted badly to the end of their run. Not surprising in that forty nine games is a long time to go but surprising because they took a while to regain consistency. The strength of this squad’s character will be known in the game following their first defeat.

Goalkeeping is going to be a conundrum for Arsene to solve in the coming weeks, unless of course, Manuel Almunia drops a complete ricket in the near future. His performances have been decent on the whole, the odd moment of ‘eccentricity’ but there is no way that Lehmann can walk straight into the side. The Spaniard was criticised in the comment board yesterday for the clearance that led to Toure clearing from the line. It misses the point though as Almunia dealt with the situation leading up to Dica’s effort well; he took charge when Toure and Senderos were challenging together with a forward and cleared the ball a good twenty yards with his head. Ordinarily, that would have been sufficient but Dica had anticipated that eventuality. Almunia was decisive which is what you want a ‘keeper to be; Toure was decisive in covering him which is what you want your defence to be. The teamwork was not that evident last season but to class the passage of play as ‘Goalkeeping Error’ is wide of the mark.

Almunia told the Daily Mail

I’ve played a few games in a row, I’m doing well and so are the team. We have put in some big performances and I don’t think the boss should change anything. I believe I’m the best keeper and I think I can keep my place for a long time. I would like to play the whole season.

He does sound totally convinced about keeping his place but I do not think that changing ‘keepers is necessarily on Wenger’s mind. He wants people to be fighting for their place which is what he has. Lehmann may not agree but this competition is what the club needs, to ensure the best level of performance from both. That Lehmann is reportedly unhappy may be true; my own view is that he may well be sold in January. Should the team get six points from the Slavia games, I would let Fabianksi in for the Sevilla and Steaua matches. They will be a step up from the Carling Cup. If Sheffield United are beaten there is another match in that competition before Christmas by which time Arsene will know if he is ready to cope with being the Number Two, or even first choice, Goalkeeper at the Club.

The attitude that Lehmann needs to display is that of Gilberto,

I’m not the kind of player who accepts the bench. This kind of situation is quite hard to manage. It’s important I keep calm and keep my mind very strong. It’s down to me

He is a World Cup Winner; he expects to play but he will work to win his place back. He is somewhat unlucky that Flamini has rediscovered the form that prompted Arsene to buy him and it is another situation where the expected return has not happened but with Gilberto, I do not believe the player is actively seeking another club but is going to make it hard for the manager not to pick him. That is the collective attitude that is needed to win trophies.

Lots of speculation around Usmanov following his press briefing in Moscow recently; how he wants to buy the club, he doesn’t think Kroenke will; how Kroenke is about to confirm the rest of the broadband deal he signed up to when he bought Granada’s stake. At the end of the day, it is purely speculation even if Usmanov buys more shares. I don’t for one minute think Dein will be dropped by the Uzbek. He is the ‘palatable’ face of the deal for him, more likely Dein will be pushed aside from meetings with the Board. The calls for Dividends, etc., are from a man who has invested £120m in buying shares, he wants some Return on that. He probably won’t get it because there are enough supporters of the Board’s policy in that respect to make any initiatives on Usmanov’s part fail. The key thing at the moment though is that the keys to the door of the club are nowhere near his hands provided nerves are held. The sums of money being talked about per share have become mind-boggling; the key to any bid from him is the ‘lockdown’ agreement. If it is extended as Fiszman has indicated it will, then expect a bid sooner rather than later. If April comes and the deal is not extended, I would guess on a bid during next summer. Personally, I find Usmanov to be an unwelcome suitor but I would say that about most, if not all, potential buyers in the current climate. Things are going well on the pitch and appear to be managed well off of the pitch so why the desire for change on a supporters part? There should be none but the Arsenal Group is an attractive proposition for someone to make money from so we had better get used to this scenario as far as shareholdings go.

Finally Ashley Cole apparently was not comfortable at Highbury during his final season at the Club because, according to his wife, no-one spoke English so he could not have a conversation with anyone. That must have been a hell of a shock to Bergkamp, Henry and the rest; it may not be their mother tongue but I always thought they were fluent in the language. Maybe nobody spoke to him because (a) they thought he was a greedy little muppet and (b) perhaps they just did not like him. And I cannot be the only one who sees the unintentional irony from the comment that he was unhappy because the club blocked a move to Real Madrid? If he could not find a conversation at Arsenal, he would have been well and truly screwed at the Bernabeu. If she wants proof of that she should ask their heroes the Beckhams. Truly, the Coles are the Chav version of that couple but without the intelligence.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Not really surprising that Cashley has found kindred spirits in John ‘nine year contract and then manager role’ Terry and Frank ‘won’t sign unless the price is right’ Lampard.

  2. Decisiveness is in general a mark of good defending or keeping, but that is not to say you cannot make the wrong choice when being decisive. The problem with Almunia’s choice to attack the ball; is it led to clear scoring opportunity. When i do not believe that would have been the case, had he held. Having said that, it was not a droppable offence. Almumia lives on for now. We may be winning, but not on the back of his performances. The ten in front of him have been outstanding.

  3. Chav version. Heehee. You’re right.

Apart from Gallas, Diarra and Cole what other Chelsea/Arsenal transfers have there been? Which was the best for the receiving club?

  4. Danny, you need help!! You are suffering from Anti-Almunia Syndrome. Consult some kind of a specialist.

  5. I’m also not hugely confident when it comes to Almunia on free kicks. Steaua got their disallowed goal off of a free-kick, Tottenham scored off a free kick, Almunia looked a bit panicked at a free-kick from Portsmouth…they don’t look as solid with him in goal. And he’s gotten away with an awful lot because Kolo’s in form. His insane moments don’t look as bad because Kolo’s saved him on several occasions.

However, maybe the team likes him more. Lehmann’s friends on the team- Ljungberg, Henry, Bergkamp- are all gone. And with team spirit being so important to the current side…

  6. The Coles are really funny people, they can’t stop giving various reasons for leaving the Arsenal. They seem to be under torture now for leaving, may be being haunted and having nightmares. It’s their problem.

Personaly I think we need some English blood in the first team. It helps. I’ve raised this issue several times on this blog and have been shot down several times. It disturbs me at times to play week in week out without having no English player in the team. There’re a lot of English boys coming through but how many can make it to the first team? Arsene should spend some money on some good English players. A player like Micah Richards can do a lot for us in our weak centre back position and we can afford him so why not? He’s confessed of being an Arsenal fan too.

Gradually the club seem to becoming a training ground for the French national team. No wonder the average French young player dream of playing for us. We should look at it critically and do something about it. If you manage a team in Spain, Germany or France and continously field foreigners week in and week out, the press will complain especiaaly if you’re a top team like the Arsenal. We should not talk down to people who raise this issue but Arsene need to do something about it, its not lack of money or lack of player availability. We shouldn’t rely solely on academy players coming through as a lot may not make it.

    Please Arsene, do something.

  7. Do what? Spend nearly £100M on 4 English players like ManU? Do one.

  8. Having gone on about the need for everyone to be positive about the team’s prospects, I suddenly feel a little nervous. We’re certainly getting the plaudits from the media right now, but I don’t think the last two performances have justified it. I hope I’m just being a worrier, but I’m concerned we might be setup for a disappointment against Sunderland. I thought Bucharest were a very poor team by any standards, 0-1 will probably turn out to be below-par. We shouldnt hide behind results, it was 0-0 after 80 minutes and that would have been a horror scoreline against a team not fit to wash our knickers. In comparison, Chelsea looked fresh and strong last night, we shouldn’t get complacent.
A question that won’t go away in my mind, is regardless how well Flamini plays, are we deluding ourselves there, do we really not have better quality in that position? I don’t want to wait for a poor result before we make changes, I want us to capitalise on this run, play our very best team, and continue to improve our performance levels. I think as well as Flamini plays, there will always be a ceiling there in terms of his ability, and the football we can play when he is in the middle of the park.

I feel the team looks a little tired right now. I think the cure is to mix it up a little and bring in some freshness. I hear what you’re saying about Adebayor Yogi, and I think of probably all the players, we need him up front. But I’d really like to see some change in midfield this weekend. I’d rest Cesc, Flamini. I think we’re a game away from imploding there. I agree with Robin regards consistency, but there should be middle-ground between playing the players three times a week, and what Liverpool are doing. Wenger has a history (build-up to the Chelsea CL qrt-final) of playing teams into the ground un-necessarily.

  9. Danny, you have a serious condition man. You are suffering from Anti-Almunia Syndrome. You must consult some kind of a specialist, OK?

  10. Howard:
So by your reckonning we should get Micah. How much would you value him at? 25million i’ll say considering West brom valued Curtis Davis at over 10million. At some point you have to ask yourself, if we can pay 1 million for Kolo why should we pay 10m for Curtis or 25m for Micah. If Cliche cost us 500k why pay 10m for Bale.
As a club manager, you are responsible for the well being of the club not of the national team.
Sp*rs are in a dangerous position, they’ve gambled and spent big and are in danger of not playing in Europe next season. Leeds gambled the same way, buying Ferdinand, Fowler and co, assuming they will be playing Champions League every season. Look what happened when they failed to qualify UCL.

  11. Howard the main reason not many Englishmen play for us is because the cost of the player is far to high. One can also see the problems we have had when we bring on a young English players. Their either too greedy or in trouble with the law. The ones we do bring on i.e. Theo are criticised week in week out and not given time to develop. We seem to have at times a mentality of trying our hardest to reject them. The one English player I wish we had got was Dean Ashton, IMO he could be the player of the future for England, a pity we didn’t get him.
As for Almunia, think back to game where Seaman was beaten from a kick at the halfway line; the point I’m making all goalkeepers have problems at times,(except for spud goalkeepers who have problems all the time). The lad is doing a good job leave him alone, the boss will know when its right to move him.
But I still love my Arsenal go you gunners.

  12. I think i mentioned in a comment the other day that people should get off Almunia’s back.

He has done what is required in the games he has played – and we have won every game with him in goal – so it would be grossly unfair to drop him now.

Regarding Flamini – He has been one of our best and most consistent performers this season – and contributed to the way we are playing, so again – to drop him now would send the wrong message to the team.

Hboy – do you think we are playing worse now with Flamini in the middle than we did with Gilberto?

  13. I dont think we NEED to rest players against Sunderland because even the players on international duty then have a week before they play a game. they then play midweek before returning to Arsenal a couple of days before Bolton. If there is a game we should rest players in, its Bolton.

Denmark play spain next sat but I dont expect Cesc to play, otherwise Bentdner V cesc would be interesting. Spain dont play the following wednesday so Cesc should be re-freshed. France and Holland both play at home on the wednesday so the travelling is not too much and I dont expect too many of our buys to play for France even though they are in the squad. Brazil dont play any games. The international break should be a fairly decent rest for most of our players.

so we should just play our strongest team against sunderland and make sure we pick up the 3 points.

I agree with oldtimer that Ashton would be my pick of any english player but I think Bendtner could be as good as him in a couple of years. I think we will have English players again one day soon. not only do we have several coming through but we are now in a far healthier financial position to be able to buy top English players whereas over the past 6 years or more we have not been able to compete with Man U and recently chelsea for the best england has to offer.

The Coles doth protest too much. If they were happy with Chelsea they would not speak about it constantly. HaHa.

  14. William

Yes, Richards will fetch for GBP20+ but he’s worth it and only 19 years. He’s an excellent player and can solidify the centre back with Kolo, instead we’re looking at another foreigners Senderos, Song etc who are not the best. I think the policy should ‘ get out of England’ only when a suitable player is not available. We can buy the best young English players coming up, not the crap Spurs have.

  15. actually, Brazil do have games, my mistake. at least it will keep Gilberto sharp! I noticed Rosicky and Eduardo are both called up despite being injured for us. I wonder if they just get called up regardless of injury or whether they are nearly better?

  16. You are a real little Englander aren’t you, Howard? And you have your dander up. I will rue the day when the likes of you and your kind have anything to do with running this club.

  17. Great post today YW.

I think your para about the ownership issue puts more clarity on yesterdays debate with Frank.

    Howard,
I share your desire for English players but they have to be prepared to come through our system, be good enough to compete with anyone from anywhere, wait to show the right determination to take their opportunities & not drive cars up lamppost.

If they are to be bought they then they have to be at a price at least somewhere comparable to equivalent (but normally better) quality from abroad. We have to have the best.

Micah Richards looks an outstanding prospect but could you imagine the cost for him, even though he is still very much a “work in progress”.

I think the number of English lads, who have come through our system, although not good enough or patient enough for us, to play in the PL, other leagues & indeed England, is testament to our contribution to the supply of English players.

“I think as well as Flamini plays, there will always be a ceiling there in terms of his ability”

Hboy you have made some good comments in the past but what you have said today about Flamini is quite ludicrous.

There are quite a few out there who have been surprised how far he has raised his particular “ceiling” this season. He is 23, improving all the time & has thouroughly taken his chance.

That was a good performance against Steaua, because they were technically sound, if not gifted, & set out to defend on their own patch. Even our most famous sides might not have won that game.

  18. I do really like Richards, he seems not only an incredible athlete but a good and humble head on his shoulders (i.e. not a chav like Cashley). And he’s a gooner as well! That said… at a price of 20 million quid… there’s an awful lot of supremely talented youth you can get for that much. The lad we got Havard Nordveit is supposedly the best defending prospect from Norway in a decade… and we got him for a mere 2 mil or something. One Richards or ten Nordveits… That’s the bizarre economics occurring with decent English players.

  19. Great post!

    A truly venomous comment:

“The Coles are the Chav version of that couple (Beckhams) but without the intelligence.”

I was unaware the Beckhams had any intelligence? Or maybe that was the point!

I thought people would attempt to slate Big Al for the clearance… What are the chances of a player being able to half volley it back in the goal? In normal circumstances… Zero.

Even when Lehmann made a similar type clearance against the Greeks I wouldn’t have said it was a gaff, it was a phenomenal finish.

Keep Al in, and rotate him with Fabianski… Time to move on Jens.

  20. the manager cannot simply put in someone english to placate the media; that’s not his job. as for the 10 english boys coming through, isn’t that still a good sign even if some of them may not make the first team? so media crow for english players; we have english players coming through in our academy. how they fare is up to them. the point is, they’re coming through.

these jens rumors depress me. i’m a little overwhelmed at how some of you are quite ready to give him the boot.

kind of like hleb last season, i suppose. but look at him now.

  21. Howard,

Apart from Richards and Davies and the crap bought up the road where is this so called best of english talent? Why does it have to be English anyway? Whats you problem? If English players are that good what has happened since 1966?
Truth is they aren’t there. If they are they’ll not only come through the AFC Academy; they’ll also make into the first team squad. And taske a look at the Academy teams; AW is quoted as saying the spilt is currently 60/40 English/ Foreign

  22. Hi all,

I have once again enjoyed the thoughts and great job on the article YW. It is so damn difficult to see any games here in Toronto, especially with the lady having me at the gym 4 days a week (she hates all sports). Anyway, these posts are one of the few life lines I get for my beloved Arsenal.

I won’t to pick up on a couple of points raised thus far, the first being buying British. I agree that Richards is indeed a talented and athletic player but at this point he is also incredibly naive positionally and has used his pace to save himself on a number of occasions to date. This fact alone places him in the “work in progress” column and whilst he is undoubtedly someone to keep an eye on the price will be prohibitive as it generally is with everything British. The club is well run and whilst there may be money in the kitty it is not Wenger’s way to part with it on the basis of nationality. In any event Arsenal a producing super young players with 3 attending the U17 WC and doing exceptionally well… patience needs to be had here because Wenger creates stars not to much in to the buying of them.

My second point is refers to Flamini, who without question has taken his chance to shine. I have my favourite players as you all do, but I am glad that Wenger picks the team (almost exclusively) on form, and if it ain’t broken why meddle? Gilberto is a professional is the very sense of the word (I hope you are reading this Jens) and will battle for the position, regardless of who has it at the time… I like that we have strong competition within the squad and no Joey Bartons.

  23. I cant understand why buying British is so expensive. I guess its because there are so few truly good british players who are genuinely good enough to compete with the French, Brazilians, Dutch etc.
If you look at spanish player transfers in spain the players do not fetch anything like brits over here. the same goes for every other country in the world. wenger does not want to be ripped off by this so he goes shopping sensibly and buys quality from elsewhere. If he can pick up an England international for a reasonable price he will do so but their price does not match their ability.
Now Man City are rich they dont need the money so wont sell Micah for less than about 20m. I dont see it happening. wenger needs to do his work with the young english players and bring them through as he is already doing. just have some patience.

on a different note man u only have one recognised fit central midfielder for a while (scholes). carrick, Fletcher and Hargreaves are all injured. they will probably use O shea in the middle for over a month. could be a testing time for them but we need them to drop some points. we play them in exactly a months time.

  24. Sarah, Hleb last season and Lehmann this season are not comparable.

Jen’s is 37 and appears to have peaked, Hleb is young and no where near his peak! Jen’s has started to cost us games, and if there are two younger keepers who can play better, you can’t blame Wenger if he chooses to move Jens on.

Lehmann is a great keeper, but nobody wants to see another Seaman situation.

Whether we buy British doesn’t bother me at all. What sometimes bothers me a bit, is that Arsenal tend to allow foreigners the chance to progress more so than the English players. Steven Sidwell, David Bentley, Jermaine Pennant and Fabrice Muamba would surely have done as well as Flamini, Reyes and Baptista?

It may just be an attitude issue, or foreigners are more patient? Or in the case of Pennant, slightly more law abiding?

I wouldn’t worry to much about English players at the moment. There are some very promising English prospects coming through. Lansbury, Gibbs and Simpson to name but a few! If Lansbury is as good as they say, he looks like the he could be the next English marketing man’s dream!

Micah Richards would be lovely though! You would have to move on Djourou, Senderos, Gallas or Toure though? That would be a tough decision!

  25. i suppose that wasn’t the greatest of comparisons, pedro. my point (unclear, i apologize) was that a lot of fans got on hleb’s back for some of his performances last season and wanted him shipped out immediately. if that had happened…

i agree that he made those concentration errors at the start of the season, and he may well cost us more games. his experience helps, though, and he does have a big game mentality.

maybe louiequatorze is right; he’s probably not feeling as comfortable at the moment now that the old guard have gone. i doubt, though, he’ll pull a ‘cole’, as rosa and aleks are probably fluent in german. =D

  26. Arsenal is the premier club in London, a cosmopolitan city which has grown into one of the most tolerant places to live on Earth. The club itself has grown with London and itself is cosmopolitan in its attitude as evidenced by the different races, cultures etc represented by its players (and manager) at all levels, and also fans. Across the club the nationality with the most representatives is England, not surprisingly. In fact those representatives have a distinct advantage over the rest because they have the language, family not to far away etc. The fact that the English kids do not take that advantage is a sociological issue which has little to do with the club. For AW nationality has never been an issue, but quality is an issue and thankfully he will not compromise on either.

England as a national team has been pretty poor since the sixties with one or two blips. For most of that time there were virtually no non-British players in the English leagues. The conclusion is staring everyone in the face, in terms of turning out football playing quality England as a nation is an under-achiever. Nothing to do with Arsenal. Unless of course you want Arsenal’s success rate to drop to the level of Englands

Howard, I do feel sorry for you because with your views and attitude you must have had a difficult time over the last eleven years, having to watch a group of johnny foreigners managed by a johnny foreigner week in week out. Is that why PHW can do no wrong for you? You think he is the quintessential Englander don’t you? Well I have news for you, his time is nearly over. Time moves on, times change. Arsenal at its best in the 20-30s and in the 90 – 00s has been an innovative club and not surprisingly it finds itself at the forefront of changes in football and society as a whole. Long may that continue and long may AW succeed with whichever group of nationalities it takes.

  27. Howard,
Wearing a Arsenal shirt should be about commitment and skill, nothing else.
Once both the criteria are met, the question of a player’s price comes into the equation. Sound financial management demands that we buy what we seek at the best price. There should never be more to it than that.
Arsenal, today, are an international club, with staff and fans from around the world, and long may that continue.

  28. “What sometimes bothers me a bit, is that Arsenal tend to allow foreigners the chance to progress more so than the English players. Steven Sidwell, David Bentley, Jermaine Pennant and Fabrice Muamba would surely have done as well as Flamini, Reyes and Baptista?”

I have to take issue with you here Pedro – Sidwell, Bentley and Muamba had a choice and chose to go elsewhere for first team football. If you know anything about Arsene you know he will not hold a player back if they want to leave – ask Cashley about that. Pennant could have been a major talent, but he chose the wrong path and for all the chances the club gave him, his situation is of his own making.

Also, in regards to your question – “Micah Richards would be lovely though! You would have to move on Djourou, Senderos, Gallas or Toure though? That would be a tough decision!” – no contest. As good as Richards might potentially become I would not spend half the transfer budget on him just because he is English. The English players already in the Academy will come through if and when they are ready and they will be Arsenal quality and already schooled in the Arsenal culture if they make it.

  29. Any quality english player is very quickly priced out of what Wenger sees as an acceptable price. And i have to say i agree with him. An young and untried potential international class player from England costs about as much and in some cases a lot more than a full international from another country.

  30. I want to add my 2 cts worth ( 20 million pounds worth?) on Micah Richards. I am unabashedly an ardent fan of the young man. He has so much, aerial prowess, power, agility, pace and such good positional sense for one so young. And at his age 19 he can only get much better. He will be fighting to be our future captain with Cesc and will benefit the Arse for years to come. 20 million pounds is cheap considering we spent 16 million on Reyes who flopped. Micah can be the foundation like TA which championships winning sides are build upon. Imagine Kolo and Micah the inpregnetrable fortress with Fabianski who I also rate highly.

In fact if Rio is worth 23 million pound( if memory serves me right) then Micah is worth much more and he can play right back when need to.

If we can we should close both eyes and buy him.

  31. Passenal, I wasn’t saying Wenger shipped them out, I was merely pointing out that some of the English players don’t get a fair crack at the whip. Maybe the foreigners have more staying power, or maybe the get more first team opps?

I don’t really remember Sidwell getting as many first team chances as the Flamster and I certainly don’t remember Bentley getting anywhere near as many opportunities as someone like Reyes did. Sidwell now plays for Chelsea and Bentley is apparently being courted by Man U, so it wasn’t a quality issue.

If you were to compare Sidwell and Flamini last season, who would you say was the more polished performer? They are of a similar age, build and position. If Flamini was given 2 chances in a year, would he stick around? I doubt it, so I can see why he moved on.

Please don’t think I am slating Flamini either, I think the guy is great, I am just wondering why we couldn’t give a similar talent the same chances?

  32. Hi Pedro,

“Arsenal tend to allow foreigners the chance to progress more so than the English players.”

Regarding the players that you mention, Arsene definitely wanted Sidwell and Bentley to stay (not sure about Muamba) but they chose to leave because they wanted guaranteed first team football – ahead of Pires, Ljungberg etc. Bentley confirmed that in an interview with the Independent a few months ago. So I would argue it’s a level playing field for all.
I know a lot of people feel, like you, that foreigners get more encouragement, but I imagine that if someone is prepared to move to England to play football, they might be more motivated to succeed anyway – after all, they’ve taken a huge step and more is at stake for them. Furthermore, the EPL probably has even more glamour for a foreign player than for an English player. Add to this that the players Arsene brings in, at whatever level, are usually not well-known in this country – the usual reaction to a new AW signing is “Huh? Who he?” – so the players have to prove themselves. So they might be more humble and therefore more patient about earning their place in the first team. Obviously I’m speaking in general terms, and there are exceptions (one could cite Justin Hoyte and Nicklas Bendtner) but do you see what I am getting at? It’s not Arsene being more encouraging, it’s the foreigner being more patient. Just a thought.

  33. I really don’t understand some Arsenal fans. Obviously, they want Arsenal to win trophies and dominate world soccer. This, however can only be achieved if we assemble a group of very talented players (or “super players” as per AW) from wherever they may be accross the globe, at reasonable prices.

The terrible truth is that there are few ’super players’ in Britain that can play the Wenger style, and those who are there are very overpriced(Bent, Davies, Gordon, and all other made in the U.K brands), making this very fact already a stambling block in itself. The total cost of Man.U’s four English players (Ferdi, Looney, Carrick and Heagreaves), could surpass the total cost of the entire current Aresenal XI. Micah Richards would cost around 15m pounds, so why can’t we find another Micah at 500 0000 somewhere else? Surely he is not the only Micah in the world.

If you observe carefully, the situation is more or less the same at all great clubs the world over. Get Valdes injured then bench Xavi & Iniesta and you could have a Spanishless Barca. At Inter Milan they did put out an Italianless side on few a ocassions. At Madrid, apart from Casillas, they only have two regular Spanish players intheir line up( Raul & Ramos).

The point I am trying to put accross is that: If you want Arsenal as football Club to dominate world football, then the nationality of the team members should not matter. Rather use the players’ quality as a measure of who should play for Asenal or not. Let nationalism wait.

  34. not many if any England players would even get into the Arsenal side now and those that might would cost more than most of the rest of the team put together.
most of our young english players are 17/18 so its another 2 or 3 years away before we can realistically expect them to be in the team. they will go on loan before they play for us anyway.

  35. Fungunner, I know they chose to leave, but the reasoning behind the transfer request for Bentley was that he wasn’t getting the same chances as some of the other players.

I do agree with you on your suggestion that foreigners are more likely to stay on than the nationals.

I am totally fine with the Arsenal team as it is, I’m not even a fan of Pennant and David Bentley. It’s just a touch disappointing when players like Sidwell end up at Classless Bridge!

Still, you win some, you lose some. As long as we are winning and unearthing world class gems, Arsene can field all the foreigners he wants!

  36. I too would like to see more English players on Arsenal’s first team — don’t you think Wenger would too? It certainly would relieve him of so much criticism from the British press. Does anyone think he LIKES being called “anti-English” all the time?

But Wenger is willing to put up with it because he puts the needs of the team first.

Many people — incl. some gooners — still don’t quite appreciate how difficult it is to find the kind of player that meets Wenger’s requirements, who can play the Arsenal way.

That player has to have pace, endurance, power, technique. He needs to be comfortable with and on the ball, he needs to view the ball the way Brazilians do: as something to protect, embrace and love — not something to smash and hoof. Furthermore, he needs to be comfortable playing in different positions.

Finally, Wenger insists that such a player be reasonably priced. In the past, when he has risked breaking this rule, he hasn’t always been satisfied with the result.

It is difficult enough to find players with all these qualities outside Britain. Which is why Wenger’s scouting system is so vast — he needs to have a very wide net.

Try limiting his focus to Britain (never mind just England) with all those criteria in mind. The task becomes far too difficult simply because British football does not value or nurture players like this. Such talents are suffocated early on.

What complicates matters is Wenger’s comparatively strict economic philosophy (comparative to the likes of Ferguson, Mourinho, Jol, etc.). I believe there’s an old quote by Wenger that goes something like “an English boy needs to play better than a Brazilian if he wants to play for Arsenal.” A lot of critics of Wenger use that quote time and time again to bludgeon him with charges of anti-English discrimination.

But it has nothing to do with that — it has everything to do with the simple fact that Wenger’s economics background and basic philosophy informs what is today a very old-fashioned view: if product A costs more money than product B, then A should automatically be of better quality than B.

Why should any manager spend 10 million on a decent player when he can spend 500,000 on one with more technique, pace and basic skills on the ball?

The only thing we can hope for is that the English kids coming up from the Academy (who Wenger talks about often as promising) have the right attitude and hunger, and can satisfy Wenger’s requirements for first team status. Wenger has said it takes about 10 or 15 years for this process to bear fruit. Several of the English kids at the academy have been there since the age of 9 or 10.

It would be a great gift to British football if Wenger were to succeed in crafting a new brand of English player. We can only hope.

  37. The article that Yogi refers to — the one that quotes Cole’s girlfriend about his discomfort with a squad of players who can’t speak English — also says that he felt “paranoid” that the squad were talking about him when they spoke in different languages. It also says that Ashley felt like he couldn’t converse with anyone.

As Yogi mentioned, this is pretty strange when we’ve all heard Henry, Lehmann, Ljunberg, RVP and others speak perfectly good English to the press. Gilberto’s English isn’t great but you can have a conversation with him.

It tells me all I need to know about Ashley Cole—he’s a provincial little bigot who can’t handle being around foreigners. How superior are players like Gilberto, Denilson, Lehmann, RVP, Fabregas and the rest in their willingness and ability to handle playing with such a cosmopolitan squad?

How insecure is Ashley Cole that he feels so threatened hearing different languages around him that he thinks they’re all talking about him? Reyes got a lot of stick for his unwillingness to adjust to England — Cole is his English mirror image.

BTW, has anyone here heard of a commentator called Pat Dolan? I’m here in the US and not too familiar with sports TV commentators in Britain. I ask because I subscribe to Setanta Sports, where I saw the Steaua-Arsenal game this week. We get the Setanta Ireland commentary feed before, during and after the games. They had Ray Parlour as one of the commentators. The other guy was Pat Dolan who spend the whole time going on anti-Arsenal and anti-Wenger screeds.

  38. I knew I’ll attract criticism for talking about the need to bring in English blood in the team. But that is the spirit of open discussion which no one should take it away.

I’ve never changed my position for months ‘cos I know its good for the Arsenal. We could’ve kept Muamba and let Song go. Now Matthew Connolly ( he was the reserve captain before Simpson and now Haarvard), a central defender well rated by fans who’ve seen him play is on loan for one year at Colchester. I hope he comes back and not sold.

All I’m say is that it’ll be good to bring in talented English players who’re good. If we could find 15+ to buy Reyes why can’t we find 20+ to get Richards, who at 19 will play for us for over 10 years. A good defender, good in the air and with pace, far better than Senderos and Djourou and a gooner from childhood?

  39. Mweneni

Barca-Puyol, Valdes, Xavi and Iniesta all spanish and regular

Madrid-Calsillas, Ramos, Guti and Raul all regulars and before the Helguira.

At least they have some in the team but what about us. How gifted is the Arsenal way with Song, Senderos, Djourou etc. How so talented are they that there are no English players doing better than these guys? Even Stephen Taylor, Onouha, Anton Ferdinand are better players than Senderos and Djourou in my opinion for centre backs. Its debatable but that’s my opinion. Alliadiere was at Arsenal for several years and given tons of changes but Stokes was moved on. Arsene has been patient with Song but did not extend same to Muamba. Its a bit disturbing at times.

  40. I sincerely hope that the current squad show more loyalty to the club and fans than you do the players, Howard. We have the privilege of watching the building of one of the finest squads in football history and your tiny mind needs to focus upon Englishness. You ask for openness but if anyone disagrees with you you just hurl insults at them. Do as you would be done by and crawl back under your rock, the world is smaller, cosier and more comfortable for you under there.

  41. Pat Dolan actually signed as a trainee for The Arsenal but failed to make the grade. In fact he failed to make any grade at all in the english game and moved back to play in the irish league where he wasnt great either. He managed a few teams in the irish leagues also. Then he became a fat waistcoat wearing wankbag of a pundit on setanta and like you say, never has a good word to say about the Gunners. Both Andy Townsend and Ray Parlour in recent arsenal games setanta have covered looked like he wanted to slap him cause he wouldnt give any credit to the arsenal players at all.

  42. Thank you Deise for the info. I’d never heard of him.

  43. No problem Marcus. He just sounds bitter to me cause he didnt make it at the Arsenal. And he would really want to sort his hair out and stop letting his mum dress him. :o )

  44. Yeah his hair looks awful — and it was pretty obvious that Ray wasn’t happy at all listening to Dolan. Even the host had to apologize to Ray, saying something like “I’m sorry, Ray, I told you, when he gets on this Arsenal thing…”

  45. Gazzap – There seems to be an approach from a lot of the fans at the moment that coming into an international game, if we’ve got them the game before that break, then we play them, as if to get the last bit of energy out of them before they go off. Now I don’t give a flying feck about the Internationals, I just worry about a) whether the players will pick up injuries either in our games or on International duty through being exhausted, and b) whether they have enough energy to put on a proper performance for us on match day. Now if we were talking about a Thierry Henry or Patrick Vieira, players on a different level from the rest of our team, then I’d say yep, playing at 80% they’re still better than our other players, they have to play. I do no believe that is the case with our current squad. Cesc is not the be all and end all of our team by any stretch. An 80% Cesc is not necessary in a game against Sunderland, when we’ve got a bench full of talented guys with energy to burn and a point to prove.

Flint – To say what I said was unreasonable seems harsh, do you genuinely believe that Flamini has more potential than Diaby or Denilson. I think Flamini is an excellent squad man, and is really coming on in midfield, but we’re not talking about being very good here, we’re talking about needing to be the best. You have to put Flamini against the top midfielders in the world, in your mind, and decide whether he’s going to cut it at the very top. Personally, I don’t know. If you’d put that question to anyone at the start of the season, they wouldn’t have blinked before answering. If you’re saying otherwise, then that guy has made a hell of a lot of progress in a few games. So like I say, I like him, he’s doing a great job, he’s high morale, and can aspire to be as good as Makelele, but for me, Denilson and Diaby are the real deal, real stars, and Diarra has looked to have excellent potential also. If we were going into a CL semi final as well, I can’t believe I’d take Flamini over Gilberto in that position. Gilberto has fantastic pace, and is a big defensive presence in our penalty area from corners. I tell you, if we start conceding from corners, Flamini will be hooked out of that team.

  46. Frank

I know you’re a Spurs guy and doing PR for Dein. I don’t even read your writings anymore because I don’t need to entertain Spurs supporters. Get some sense and move to Spurs blog instead of hanging around here. Arsenal won’t be sold for you to get your consultancy fees.

  47. hboy, I think the point is that we are winning with the current formation and Flamini suits the high tempo game that we are currently playing, more than Gilberto for instance. It does not mean that Gilberto no longer has a place in the team, Wenger will use the right combination for the circumstances. If Cesc/Flamini are working well, why risk upsetting the balance? Diaby and Denilson are still a work in progress and they will get their chances, but you need work horses as well as stallions to get through a long hard season so I still see a place for the less ‘naturally gifted’ players. Also, if you actually look at Flamini’s game, he has improved considerably – it’s not just about his work rate. He is tackling, throwing himself in front of shots on goal and passing much more effectively. Given his age and willingness to work hard at his game, why shouldn’t he go on improving? He may never be Cesc, but he is a useful squad player whose versatility and ‘never say die’ attitude is good for the team.

  48. OK its a fair cop you really got me there, Howard. Very astute, how did you do it? Perhaps you could explain so that I don’t make the same mistakes again.

  49. “I feel the team looks a little tired right now. Wenger has a history (build-up to the Chelsea CL qrt-final) of playing teams into the ground un-necessarily”.
    —–hboy

I again agree with hboy on this rotation issue. AW DOES HAVE A HISTORY of OVERWORKING HIS REGULARS. It made sense in the past but not with the talented multi-dimensional team he has presently. I can’t believe he’s going to make the same mistake.

    We wait and we wonder…….

  50. Flamini is playing probobly at the top of his game right now so you have to use that while you can. He wont improve much past the level he is at right now i wouldnt say. Diarra as the holding player alongside Cesc is probobly the future centre midfield pairing. To call Diarra just a holding player is a bit unfair though. As well as good positional sense his passing is really accurate and varied and he also has good attacking instincts. Its between him and Diaby for midfield battler and Cesc and Denilson for the maestro.

  51. After Sunderland there is a 2 week gap to next fixture. That will be 8 league games and 4 champs league, a total of 12 games. The players would hardly be nackered after 12 games , surely.

You have gotta start with best 11 and not take the game lightly. When you have it in the bag then rest the main guys

  52. “I think we’re a game away from imploding there”

What an earth are you talking about?

The team has just won 2 tricky away games, by far the better team in both, but didn’t exactly dazzle.

They are on a high & should not be knackered just yet. I bet they cannot wait for the next game.

When you have a winning formation you don’t change it unless you need to.

There will be plenty of opportunities for the others.

    Hboy,
Passenal has given a very adequate response regarding Flamini.

    Frank & Howard,
It is a matter of opinions here & Frank is a well respected long term blogger here, even if I cannot agree with him on the current board issues, just as I am unable to concur with much of what Howard comes up with about the playing side.

Perhaps you can just agree to disagree without the insults.

  53. My contribution to the English thing: Name me one English player who is the best player for his Premier league side?

    Want him in the team?

    Nah, me neither.

  54. Frank: I also strongly disagree with Howard about the need to bring in english players jus for the sake of nationality, but that has nothing to do with takeover arguments or russian/uzbek money. The problem with them is NOT that they aren’t english. But you seem unable to grasp that simple concept.

  55. Non Edible Nacho,

What are you talking about? The only Board member I have taken issue with is PHW. I have also stated quite clearly that I do not want Usmanov to own the club and that DD is now history. If you are going to come out with bold statements ‘you seem unable to grasp the simple concept’ I suggest you read carefully, engage your brain and then reply.

  56. @ Howard, I think you were too hasty in defending yourself, therefore, unable to read my post properly(or maybe you did read it properly but could understand what I am sayin).

Take it easy man, I for one, understand your poind perfectly just that, unfortunately, I have a different opinion.

  57. Frank: you did have the talent to transform a chat about foreign players in another opportunity to attack the current chairman, relating Howards point of view in the two subjects. That’s what I was complaining about.

  58. Hi! Nice site!
