West Ham Preview

An important game for the team today at Upton Park on several levels. Firstly, it is without doubt the most difficult match that any of the top four have; Newcastle in fifth travel to Manchester City but with due respect to both sides, I doubt that by Christmas they will occupy their current positions. I could be wrong but I do not think so. Three points are vital for Arsenal, ensuring that the good start continues, imbuing more confidence not that they should need this boost any more given that their unbeaten run this season has already stretched to double figures.

It is a match that allows them the opportunity to put myths and ghosts of yesteryear to bed, gaining maximum points at a ground which has in the recent past been something of a barren hunting ground. Not since 2001 have we won there, 2 – 1 that day. Since then three draws and a defeat have been the Premiership returns. A win might help convince those from without that a serious title challenge can be mounted. Indeed, with Chelsea entertaining Fulham and Liverpool and Manchester United visiting Wigan and Birmingham respectively, a win might be hugely beneficial in building a bigger gap between Arsenal and those expected to occupy the other top four spots; that is the best case scenario.

West Ham should not be underestimated yet their elevated league position seems to be based more on their away form than that at home. I think that their only maximum so far is the recent win over Middlesbrough with Manchester City and Wigan coming away from Upton Park with at least a share of the spoils. A win should be attainable but it will be a performance more akin to the visit to Ewood Park than Tottenham this time, a mix of the battling and beautiful. I suspect that the hosts confidence will be higher than last season when we visited and hopefully that will make them more expansive than packing the midfield in a 4-5-1 formation. We were undone by the inability to get the passing game going last season, West Ham hunting in packs for the tackle. Yet the durability of this season’s Arsenal is also a level higher than last; we were likely to score late goals last season, now it is almost expected. It would be nice if tomorrow the late goal should it arrive, emphasised the win rather than sealed it.

Team news is pretty uneventful in terms of the numbers of those returning. Only Alex Hleb is confirmed as he returning. That said, it is one of two changes I expect to see from last week. Whether it is Hleb or Eboue who replaces Walcott remains to be seen but my money is on the latter. Perhaps Diarra is in with a shout but I would be surprised if that is the case. Up front, I fully expect RvP to return in place of Eduardo, now absent through injury with Adebayor’s place will not be under threat in the immediate future other than through injury.

The team I suspect will be

Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Senderos, Clichy; Eboue, Fabregas, Flamini, Diaby; RvP, Adebayor

with a bench of

Fabianski, Gilberto, Diarra, Hoyte, Bendtner

The question for me will be whether or not Gilberto returns. If he does, I do not think it will be at the expense of Flamini. More likely, Diaby would drop to the bench and Flamini moves to the left. However, Arsene could use the Brazilian instead of Senderos to rest him after midweek, ahead of next weeks Champions League tie. Otherwise there is little, if any, need to change the side. All are playing well, contributing to the team. The key thing for this match and those coming up is that the opposition can no longer be sure where the goals are coming from. If they stop Adebayor, van Persie is more than capable of filling that void. Trying to stop Fabregas seems to be something that is difficult to do for the whole of the ninety minutes, no-one has succeeded so far but they will stop the scoring run but not the range of damaging passes that he has displayed this season.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. Hopefully, and there is a strong reason to say this, I’ll be back on Sunday but if not, Monday it is.

  1. Sort of hope Arsenal will slip so liverpool can catch up :D

  2. go back to your own blogs, scum!

  3. I’m surprised you’ve left out Hleb from your squad. I think it’s unlikely that we will have 2 defensive midfielders on the bench – seems like a waste of a substitute. The defence and attack seem pretty sorted so I think Wenger will go with:

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Senderos Clichy
    Eboue Fabregas Flamini Hleb
    RVP Adebayor

with a bench of Fabianski, Gilberto, Hoyte, Diaby/Eboue/Hleb

or another combination of Hleb/Eboue/Diaby on the wings. It all depends on how bad Hleb’s injury was. Don’t forget Eboue has only played 70 odd minutes in a CC match after being out for a few weeks injured aswell.

  4. oh and BBB on the bench too.

  5. I agree with your team selection, YW, although we might see Alex Hleb start instead of Eboue. This could be a very tricky game. Does anyone know what the state of the pitch is like at ‘Upton Park’ these days>

Howard, I have responded to your ‘comment’ to me on the previous blog so as not to bore everyone witless.

  6. I think Arsene will go for Eboue on the right and Hleb on the left to start. Diaby will come on at left mid at some point and either Eboue will come off and Hleb move to the right or Hleb will come off.

I also suspect Gilberto might play CB as he will cope better with Ashton than Senderos

  7. Frank

I’ve read your comments and I’m always dismayed by your attack on PHW and other directors on the Board despite working hard to make the Arsenal what it is. I know Dein’s PR machinery has been working 7/24 to create the impression that he alone is responsible for the current upward state of the club; which is a BIG LIE. Arsenal has existed before Dein and will continue to do even better without him ‘cos nature hates vacuum and so a vacuum will always be competently filled. His job at the club has been taken over temporarly by Ken Friar and according to Arsene, he’s been excellent. You can continue to cry for the return of Dein, that’s your right but I can tell you emphatically that its over for him and he’s not returning even with the cover of the ‘Judas’ silver coins he collected from the Russian. NOBODY IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB SO THAT EVEN IF YOU MISBEHAVE, YOU SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK. Dein is not the Arsenal and the Arsenal will continue to rise without Dein ‘cos Dein is not GOD.

  8. Hi Howard, how are you? I haven’t called for the return of DD, and I have not ‘attacked’ KenFriar or Keith Edelman.

I am beginning to think that the Prem deal with the TV companies rather than widening access games, contrives to exclude Arsenal fans from seeing the match. Whilst I am happy to listen to ATVO, the presenters seem to think that we should listen to their banter and epithets rather than a precise commentary on the action on the pitch.

I hope Big Phil plays and I hope he has a stormer today.

  9. my team against west ham is whatever team arsene will play.we have got sheffield utd in the carling cup.come on arsenal

  10. At the moment I am ambivalent about who owns the Club but I am dismayed that so many people can’t see that PHW is little more than an incompetent nice but dim.
As a Chairman his comments are best ill-timed and at worst present the Club Board as condescending know it alls.
By the way, this is the same PHW who interviewed AW then got cold feet and offered the job to Bruce Rioch (ref: Wenger the biography, Xavier Rivoire) only to come back a year later.

  11. Finally sorted the IT problems out so am able to be back online at home.

The post was written yesterday morning but updated with the news of Hleb’s fitness; sorry forgot to update the team although I thought at the time it would be a case of him being on the bench given Eboue has had an hour on the pitch since his return. If Hleb does start then my guess is that it will be on the left with Eboue on the right. I think as time goes on, with everyone fit, two of he, Rosicky and Eboue will fill the wide positions.

    YW

  12. @ Ian. I have to disagree with you about Peter Hill-Wood being “incompetent” or “dim”. I don’t know him personally (perhaps you do?) but I would guess that you don’t get to be head of investment at Hambros Bank if you are thick. Also, he has managed for many years to lead a board of directors whose stewardship of AFC is amost universally admired (certainly by Stan Kroenke, who praised the way Arsenal is run).
I also read an excerpt from the book on Wenger by Xavier Rivoire, and my take on it was that Dein (who was talking to the author) said that it was a JOINT decision to pass on AW’s services the first time round, and a JOINT decision to bring him in a year or so later. I suspect that the story of DD bringing Wenger in in the teeth of the others’ opposition is a bit of a myth.

@ Frank and Ian, I cannot see that PHW’s recent utterances are the public relations disaster which you seem to think they are. His observations (for example about Chelsea’s pretensions to “global club” status) have, for the most part, been blunt – but they have also been astute. His comment about not wanting “his sort”, referring to Kroenke, was ill-judged but understandable because he thought at the time that SK was a carpet-bagger. And he did not make the “his sort” remark in public, his comments were relayed to a newspaper by a third party. I can’t remember where I read that, I’m afraid, so you’ll have to take my word for it – if you’re prepared to do that. But in any case, PHW has met Kroenke since then, and relations have been cordial for months and SK is thought to be siding with the board over the takeover (see The Daily Telegraph a few days ago. I know – it’s the Telegraph – but force yourself…)
I don’t think PHW’s comments can prejudice the relationship with R&W Holdings. Yes, Hill-Wood said the business world was “murky” in Uzbekistan, but far worse things have been said about Usmanov, as we know. Usmanov has taken offence, but let’s be honest – this isn’t a Kroenke situation, where there is scope for Kroenke to co-operate with the board without launching a takeover. There is no middle ground here. The relationship between DD and the Arsenal board has already broken down and Usmanov/Dein have been interested in a hostile takeover from the start. Could your hostility to PHW simply be an expression of class prejudice? Just because he’s a toff, it doesn’t mean that he can’t love his club as much or more than anyone else who doesn’t have a double-barrelled surname.
    Cheers, anyway.

Fingers crossed for later, although I just can’t help having a very, very, very good feeling…

  13. Hleb starts indeed. :)

  14. goallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll,robin van persieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  15. Hi FunGunner,

I read the whole book not just an excerpt. For the avoidance of doubt, I confirm that PHW and AW dined at an exclusive restaurant in Chelsea close to the Chairman’s home with Hill Wood “initially encouraged to make contact by David Dein”
On the one hand you have him as leader of a Board of Directors but on the he makes JOINT decisions. OK you can have it both ways if thats the way you want to read it.
Sorry but I don’t think competent Chairmen or CEO’s make such class-ridden and disrespectful statements. Frankly he is an anachronism whose stewardship had been solely based on maintaining the status quo until Dein then Fiszman(spelling?) came along.
These guys together with Edelman started to manage the club as modern business and interpreted AW’s vision as a business strategy.

  16. I agree with Ian

  17. Half time. We need the second goal. Looks like we are going to be without Hleb for a while.

  18. great hleb back from injury!!..shit hleb out injured, fuck it!!

  19. Ian & Frank

You people don’t know what you’re talking about. Always slating PHW as if he’s done nothing for the Arsenal. He’s no fool and knows what’s necessary to make the club successful. He’s always been right that’s why the club is where it is. He’s fighting a takeover right now by ‘vultures’ led by Dein and he’ll do anything to safeguard the dignity and values of the club. If you disagree with him, its your right but don’t insult him if you disrespect him. He’s an Arsenal great to chair a successful club for so many years now.

Anyway, Arsenal 1 West Ham 0. That makes my day. With this victory I’m becoming convinced now, may be another unbeaten title chase in the horizon. This time a young invicibles.

  20. Well done the lads! I’ve already seen a few people criticizing the style of the win, but we can’t always be at our fluent best. The score is what counts at the end of the day. 1 – 0 to the Arsenal!

  21. Hi Frank
I do not dispute that DD introduced Arsene to the Arsenal, just that he was not solely responsible for Arsene signing for the club and it was not against the wishes of the other directors. The excerpt of Rivoire’s book that I read dealt specifically with how Arsene was recruited, and it quoted Dein as saying “we” when talking about the decision not to take Arsene on the first time around, and also the decision to appoint him later. That is evidence of a joint decision. PHW is the chairman of the board, therefore he IS the leader of the team who run arsenal – that’s just what being the chairman means. There is no contradiction between a group of people having a leader and making joint decisions. If the group agree on a course of action – that’s a joint decision.
I am still curious as to what your real problem with Hill-Wood is. I would love to hear an example of any statements that PHW has made which you consider to be class-ridden. Kroenke seems to have forgiven PHW for any percieved insult, so why can’t you?

  22. Last response should have been directed at Ian, mainly. Drat!

  23. No problem, FunGunner. Actually my views are similar to Ian’s although I am not as well read. I think that for a very modern football club the patronage of the Hill-Woods is not only not required but could be positively dangerous. It is an anachronism and a throw back to the days of cloth caps and bowler hats. If Hill-Wood has a role at all it is tryng to keep the original Bracewell-Smith promise of maintaining their shares in the club (now the Bracewell-Smtih and Carrs’ shares) on behalf of the fans. Difficult because he got rid of his. Btw I doubt whether he was employed by Hambros as a strategist, more to do with contacts. DF is the power behind the throne.

  24. No problem with the style Passenal. A great, great win. Fantastic team performance again.

  25. This is the result I have been most impressed by. We were not on top form but we have ground out a result against a potential bogey team.

and with Chelsea stuttering, it is great to keep putting points on the board.

Did anyone see the challenge on Hleb, it was awful and I will be amazed if he is not out for a while, I think a yellow was lenient, it was very late.

I think players have been watching Diaby though and he is being caught out for being so one footed. I wonder if it is worth trialling Eduardo out on the Left.

  26. might be but have no idea how long EDS is out for. its a groin. Hleb looks to be out for a while. I would say a couple of games, but I am hoping its not a ligament in his knee or it could be a lot longer. Wenger said Ade would be back for tuesday. Ade is massively important to this team and while EDS is out so is RVP. a couple of injuries and suddenly you start feeling vulnerable.
our centre midfielders dont ever seem to get injured and there’s millions of them! we are short of wingers, strikers and centre backs and thats where all our injuries are.

anyway great result today. in 3 tricky away games this season we have not yet lost so the omens are good. Liverpool away is this teams big test, but it does seem that we are going to be involved in the title battle and thats all I asked for pre season so I am happy.

  27. “Those young English players will be of a good enough quality as soon as I go and see the French under-17s and I say to myself, no I’m not going to take that player there, because I have an English boy who is under 17 and as good as him. But one of the beautiful things in sport is being able to say: ‘Why shouldn’t a kid who is passionate and talented – and born in Zimbabwe – have the chance to play with the best footballers in the world?’ It would be an injustice”. Arsene Wenger. What a man.
