Derby County Preview

Derby visit The Emirates, hot on the heels of their first Premiership victory over Newcastle. They are though still favourites for the drop and it is exactly this sort of game that undid the Club last season at home; opposition that they are expected to trounce turning up and putting a brick wall up. Derby will do that, particularly as they have conceded ten goals in their last two away games. It is reminiscent of either the 89 or 91 title winning season that we face Derby so soon after Liverpool had thrashed them. Then it was a 0 – 7 reverse that we had to emulate; we did not come anywhere near that day, two Alan Smith headers from corners being the reward for what was a relatively turgid performance.

As far as the team goes, it seems that there may be a few changes from Wednesday, all enforced. Rosicky will be missing for the next two or three Premiership fixtures, Senderos and Hleb look likely to miss tomorrow only. It leaves Arsene with a small dilemma to resolve; earlier in the season Alex Hleb filled in on the left when Rosicky was off the pitch yet Theo Walcott’s goals in the last two season at club and international level have come through the left hand channel. It might be worth a try there. However, it could be time to give Denilson his appearance in the side in that area, something he has done before. I would be surprised if Abou Diaby were picked simply because he looks so uncomfortable as a ‘winger’. He may have been the architect of his own misfortune to some degree; the three points secured at Villa Park thanks to his goal may have teased Arsene with the prospect of Diaby playing on the left. However, Diaby does not have the positional discipline to fill that role in anything other than an emergency, something that tomorrow is definitely not.

Were Walcott to move to the left, I would put Diarra on the right, giving him his full debut. This is a position we were told that he could play when he was signed. There has been suggestion that Eduardo could play on the left yet I do not believe that will happen. I suspect he will get his chance with Adebayor being rested and Bendtner on the bench.

My line up for the game would be:

Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Gilberto, Clichy; Diarra, Fabregas, Flamini, Walcott; Eduardo, van Persie

with a bench of:

Fabianski, Hoyte, Bendtner, Diaby, Denilson

Assuming that a comfortable two goal lead is established, I would bring Bendtner and Diaby on after an hour for van Persie and Fabregas with Denilson coming on five or ten minutes later for Flamini. No doubt Arsene will do it differently, probably with Diaby on the left and Walcott on the right, perhaps even Alex Song as the holding midfield player.

Off the pitch, Red and White’s intentions have been made public. Usmanov has made it clear that he wants the whole kit and caboodle or a sizeable return on his investment by getting to 25% and one share to have a blocking vote on Corporate changes. In doing so, he is following a clear takeover path; there is nothing wrong with that in terms of his strategy. His fundamental problem and that for David Dein as well, is that once he exercises this power, any support for their plans ought to disappear unless such actions are followed very swiftly with a full takeover bid. To hold the Club to ransom is a risky ploy; not necessarily from antagonising shareholders but I fail to see how any supporter could put their weight behind an organisation that is preventing the Club from operating, assuming those actions are in the best interest of the organisation, possibly to the detriment of on the pitch matters. I still find it difficult to fathom those who believe that Usmanov can be a force for good as far as Arsenal Football Club is concerned but until such times as the investment is used negatively, it is a case of a wary eye being cast in their direction.

Enjoy the game wherever you watch it; we may be back online tomorrow at home but if not, see you Monday.

Responses

  1. Senderos appears to have recovered. And the boss seems to be considering Eduardo on the left.

    [Read here]

  2. Nice team… I like it. But I wouldn’t put Diaby on, I’d bring Denilson and Bendtner on.

    What about Daddybayor??

  3. Arsenal.com says that Senderos is fit… that solves our CM dilemma. I want to see walcott on the left too. I think he can be really effective from left flank. But we all know Wenger… as you pointed out.. Diaby will probably start!!!

  4. The team will be:
    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Senderos Clichy
    Walcott Flamini Fabregas Eduardo
    Adebayor Van Persie

    Fabianski, Gilberto, Hoyte, Denilson, Bendtner

  5. Le Boss said:-
“We still have Eboue (ankle), Gallas (groin) and Lehmann [elbow) out. We have lost Rosicky and Hleb as well now. Rosicky has a minor strain and will be out for 10 days, Hleb has a knee injury. But Senderos will be fit. I will rotate a little bit and try to get the right mixture between stability and some fresh legs as well. Gilberto will be back, maybe Theo Walcott will start, I do not know yet. Eduardo down the left can be a possibility as well.”

so the line up should be:-
    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Senderos Clichy
    Walcott Gilberto Fabregas Eduardo
    Adebayor Van Persie

  6. My line up:

    Almunia.

    Sagna- Kolo- Gilberto- Clichy.

    Flamini- Diarra- Fabregas.

    Walcott- Adebayor- Eduardo.

    4-3-3.

  7. Arsene probably wont, but Id be tempted to play a hell of a lot of CMs:

    almunia
    sagna – toure – senderos – clichy
    flamini – gilberto – fabregas – diaby
    Adebayor – Eduardo

(hell, might as well put diarra in goal and exhibit the entire collection!)

except that against a team that will defend flat out, we dont need so many defensive-minded players. So your lineup seems wise.

    COME ON ARSENAL!

  8. A 2:0 win is all I think we need. Early goal on both halves, with Fab4, Flam, Ade or RvP sbstituted for EDS, Denilson, Bendtner, Diarra or Hoyte.

    Almunia
    Sagna-Toure-Senderos-Clichy
    Gilberto
    Walcott-Fab4-Flam16
    Ade-RvP

  9. Goalscorers: Adebayor 18″, Walcott 56″….

Apparently Arsenal has NEVER lost a game when Adebayor scores! Hmmm….

  10. 5:0 at 82nd minute. Ade hat-trick, Diaby, Fab4..poor Derby. Go GOOOOOOONERSSSS!!!!!!!

  11. The team was immense today. Everyone played well and looked quality. Flamini once again had an understated but made a superb contribution, only reinforcing how important he is to us now.

  12. great team performance and like so much of this season the show is really being run by Cesc and Adebayor. what is great though is that they have a strong defence behind them and particularly the full backs who are great at going forward and defending.
Diaby did well even though he was in his unfavoured positon once more. sweet sweet strike, but I dont think it beats Adebayors against spurs.
I thought despite not getting a goal Eduardo still looked class to me. if he was 1 yard faster he would already have scored more goals in my opinion.
Walcott looked a bit out of sorts. he needs to work on his decision making and final ball, but I guess he needs more time to practice that.
But a good performace without Hleb or Rosicky so a bit less of the possession football in the first half that we are used to and more forward drive to the game. not sure which is best.

Word on Diarra, who looked class to me. really good on the ball and does not put a foot wrong. OK so he only had 10 minutes but I think wenger has played a blinder there. the competition for the place next to cesc is unbeleivably tough. Gilberto could not even get in the squad!!

  13. I read somewhoere Gilberto had a cold. Is this true?

  14. Sunday’s Q of the day:
Which Premiership (or top club) manager would have played Fabregas 3 years ago like AW did? Would Mourinho have? Sir Alex? Rijkaard? Capello? Duande Ramos???
    Guys…your thoughts

  15. there is only one arsene wenger, aman.up the gunners.

  16. yogi where was adebadboy in your team?
thank god you aint the manager!!!

  17. Jimmy your so right about Flamini who again showed what a valuable player he is and is beginning to show why he should not be allowed to leave. A new contract should be put infront of him immediately.

  18. absolutely. I dont care that we have denilson, Diarra etc, Flamini needs to be re-signed. he is actually the most versatile of those players as well and I have always thought that that is the sign of a quality player. I think, though I may be wrong, he is one of the few players that has been involved in every game for Arsenal this season. wenger has faith in him and so should we.

despite his brilliant game, I hope we dont use diaby on the left until Rosicky returns. there are still better options out wide than him. he is so right footed, at least get him on the right wing!!

  19. Anyone notice there has been no sign of ethan-gooner since we thrashed tottenham? Hmmm, makes you wonder…

  20. Flamster didn’t play 2nd leg vs. Sparta. Only Kolo played all matches so far. And Cesc, though he came as a sub once.
