It seems that not being assured publicly that he will walk straight back into the first team has brought the competitive side of Jens Lehmann to the fore. Did I say competitive? Perhaps bitchy might be a better phrase. The comments though need to be treated with some caution, their original intent perhaps being lost in the translation. Anyone who was expecting humility and the offer of dressing in sackcloth and ashes is barking up the wrong tree. Whilst he may believe that there is no-one of equal stature in the race for goalkeeping position – he’s right, there isn’t – it is his recent form opened the door for Manuel Almunia to takeover and current form is all selection should ever be based on.
The Spaniard has done little wrong in the three games he has been between the sticks. Whilst at times he has been unorthodox in his saves, the fact is that he has only conceded one goal in three games. It does not matter who the opposition were in those games; the objective is to prevent them scoring which he has done. It would be extremely harsh to drop him simply because of Lehmann’s return to fitness. There have been doubts due to Lehmann have two Jack Douglas moments in his opening two games of the season. Whilst he those are the only goals that he has conceded in his Arsenal matches so far in 2007-08, one of them proved costly and the opening day against Fulham could well have been more straightforward had we not been chasing the game for most of the ninety minutes. It is up to the German to convince Arsene that he is the best at the Club; whether he will do so before the weekend is another matter. Much of that will rest upon what other changes he is forced to make for the Spurs game. Already a new centre half is needed and probably the central midfield will have a swap around.
Thankfully William Gallas did not play for France on Saturday; his non-appearance in that international was good news from one perspective, as it meant that he could not pick up another knock or strain in the match. Given the propensity for Domenech to be beligerent and chose players even if they are not totally fit, it was a real surprise. Perhaps Venus was not properly in conjunction with Uranus? It raises the prospect though that he may not be fully fit for the Tottenham game although as that is a week away, it is too soon for that call to be made. However, Diarra’s apparent form at Right Back offers Arsene another way out if Gallas does not pass any fitness tests. If he can earn a Man of the Match rating from some of the media, then there is no reason why he should not be able to slot into the full back position on Saturday, allowing Sagna to move across to the centre, his apparent versatility was one of the reasons that Wenger signed him in the summer.
It seems unlikely that Gilberto Silva will participate on Saturday. Brazil’s match kicks off at midnight (BST) on Wednesday making Friday the likeliest day of his return to the UK. Previous international weeks have seen the player rested and it would be strange for him to be used in a Saturday lunchtime kick off. Flamini will presumably continue his role as his deputy.
A long way to go yet before those decisions have to be made and another round of internationals in which the best laid plans of mice and men can get well and truly screwed up.
’til Tomorrow.

Once just once I would like to see AFC play the tiny tots or Manure or Chelski with a full side. Right now we have no idea just how the full 11 would play.

It does seem we always make the best of a bad situation when we play the top sides. I dont want to see changes in both defence and midfield. I think if he is needed (ie Gallas is not fit) then Gilberto has to play despite him landing only the day before. I would scared to see diarra at RB, Sagna at CB and Flam in midfield all in the same game.
Gallas did say he’d be back in 2 weeks last week, so that means he should just about be ready for Spurs.

I’m not a religious man but I’m praying BWG will be fit for the game on Sat esp. as Gilberto won’t be playing.
As usual, Fabregas will be the key.
Hopefully Adebayor continues his rich game of form against Spurs.

The other option if WG is not fit is to play Gilberto at Centre Half (where he may not need to be as fit as he would to play CM), Sagna at RB (if fit) and Diarra as the defensive midfielder – which is his best position.
I would feel OK with this side –
Almunia
Sagna Giberto Toure Clichy
Hleb Diarra Fab Rosicky
RVP Adebayor / Edu

i think that if sanga and gallas both pull up fit perhaps diarra will slide into midfield and wenger will test the fabregas diarra combination in the midfield as to see if the two will gel once gilberto leaves, perhaps if successful it could pave the way for gilberto to leave in january

Assuming all are fit, I think AW is more likely to go with 4-5-1 meaning
Almunia
Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
Diarra Fabregas Flamini Rosicky
Hleb
RvP
leaving Adebayor and Eduardo on the bench.

No Yogi – Remember Wenger’s target this season is to always start with two strikers upfront
My dream team would be
almunia
Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
Hleb Fabregas Diarra Rosicky
Adebayor Eduardo
Substitutes
Denilson in for Hleb to bolster our defensive midfield options in the 70th minute ( By then Arsenal 3 Spuds 0 ), Van Persie for Eduardo, Eboue, Walcot, Diaby and Hoyte.
Arsenal are poised to win this game with a big margin in commemoration of Wenger’s new contract signing.
Results: Arsenal 5 Spuds 0 ( 1 )
Eduardo to score his debutant goal for Arsenal in Premier League.
Man of the Match – Rosicky/ Eduardo.
LET’S GEAR UP FOR THE GAME ON SATURDAY!!!!

Yogi, Diarra on RW? cant see that. with 4-5-1 AW will end up annoying 3 strikers, all of whom want to play. 4-5-1 gives spuds too much respect. save that for OT and SB.
I forgot to mention with my team, that that would be my line up if Gallas is not fit.. clearly if he is fit then Gallas plays and Gilberto rests.
I would also say that my team was what I wanted and not what I think AW will do which are two completely different things.
By: gazzap on September 10, 2007

Gazzap –
You would favour Eboue over Rosicky????
Giberto needs to play if possible – he is the best we have in the air – and the Spuds will no doubt throw balls into the box…..

i think it will be an easy game for Arsenal
i didnt think they could win anything this yr, but the last 2 games, they have shown they will be up for it this season … cant wait till they play Liverpool .. i think if they can convincingly beat them, they will be the team to win the EPL title
only thing i can see hurting them, is the fact they no longer have Henry, nor did they buy a replacment for him … not having a big striker may hurt them later on, but we will just have to see

Fabregas had two yellows, hence missed that game, and may be the next-Let it be God.
On the issue of Gilbrto arriving on Friday when Arsene has already given his press conference, I dont think it gonna happen that he will qualify even the bench.
If William Gallas gets a game on Wednesday, then we will be happy that he will be back as long as it will be a half game. Well, I’ll expect this to happen:
Almunia will start, backed up by Clichy, Kolo, Gallas/Sagna, Flamin/Sagna/Eboue, Flamin/Dennilison/Diarra, Cesc, Hleb, Rosicky, Van Perse, Adebayour/Eduardo, all of these benched by: Diarra/Diaby/Eboue, Adebayour/Eduardo, Jense, Sagna/Gallas/, Nordveirt,
—————– Almunia—————–
Sagna/Flamini/Eboue,—-Kolo,—- Gallas/sagna—-Clichy
Eboue/Hleb/Walcott—–Cesc——Diarra/Flamin/Diaby/—-Rosicky
Van pesrse—– Adebayour/DUDU….
I hope so.
Jens need to liven up and stop being a sllepy old man.

It’s not going to be an easy win, we’ll all be relieved when Arsenal win. This will be a dirty game and they’ll try and kick Arsenal all over the pitch. Let’s just hope it doesn’t result in a key injury.
I think bringing on Eduardo in this game is crucial, he’s on top form and it would show Spuds how much better he is than Darren the gent.

dont know much about this joefootball guy on this blog, but I watched Italy-France and Diarra was man of the match .. he played for long parts against both Del Piero and Zambrotta as Ribery wasnt covering the right channel (something that made Thuram very unhappy and he subsequently gave Ribery a massive bollocking)
now Del Piero might not be the sharpest anymore, but Zambrotta still likes to have a go.. so very very impressed by Monsieur Lassana
also Arsene was commenting on French TV and was asked whether he had bought Diarra for same right back spot to which he replied that he had bought him for a central midfield spot

I dont think Eboue is a better player than rosicky but I think a midfield 4 of Hleb, Fab, Diarra (or Flam) and Rosicky is way too leightwight to go to WHL and get a win. thats why I would put Eboue in midfield. a bit of strength pace and directness would mix it up nicely.

I will disagree with you, Spurs don’t kick opponents; we’ll beat them but I can assure you that they won’t play like Bolton or Blackburn, their game is beautiful. Their approach when playing Arsenal is the first 20 minutes; they’ll be pushing and forcing and after that they relax. Their forward with Berbatov is powerful but the mid field and defence don’t give much support. Our fringe players beat them in the CC the only minuses being Bent and Bale who can’t change the normal pattern. 2 goals to the Arsenal from FAB4 and ROSICKY.

There is no way the current Board will sell to Kroenke or Dein’s Russians. The Board holds 45% and AST holds 12%, together 57%. Red and White can get 30% through other small shareholders but when they launch a takeover bid they won’t succeed ‘cos the Board and AST won’t sell by any circumstances. The Arsenal Board is not like the greedy MANU and the POOL board or Ken Bates of Chelsea who was in debt and had to sell. So please, forget your dreams of a takeover by the Russians and Kroenke, they’re wasting their time it won’t happen. They’ll always remain at the rim, a mere investors in Arsenal shares minus control. Dein’s dream won’t come to fruition.

Fizsman is the person who decides when the club sells and who it sells to. he is the man with all the cards. Kranky will sell at a profit to someone like Red and White and they will happily take Fizsmans shares when he finally decides to sell and that will take them over 50%. I expect then the other shareholders would follow relatively easily. we need to hope that a more credable buyer comes along than Red and White who lets face it Fizsman will not want to sell to as I understand he and Dein are not friends and Usmanov is a crook. With luck Fizsman can mastermind a better takeover whereby he and the board agree to sell to a buyer, giving that new buyer a 50% share in the club. then as I say I think both Kranky and Red and white would be more or less forced to sell up to the new buyer. they would not have to sell but they wont hold any power within the club with their current small shareholding. As I say Fizsman is the boss, but I really dont expect anything to happen for 2 years.

How many of you saw the Italy-France game? I think only one of you on this thread so far has said they watched it. Diarra was incredible. He knocked down Gattuso and was basically Vieira’s “deputy” in absolutely dominating Italy physically. And it was great to see Vieira play like the old uncompromising enforcer he used to with Arsenal. France had tons of fouls, they just didn’t let up on the Italians. After watching Diarra in that game, I can’t wait to see him play at Arsenal.
It’s too bad Domenech was so predictably conservative because France could’ve won that game, if only he’d taken off Henry! Or not put him on the pitch at all! Henry doesn’t work well with Anelka and it was Anelka who gave Italy problems, not Henry (he was invisible).

i saw the France – Italy game, and the only reason why Diarra did well, was becasue Del Piero was rubbish …. also gattuso played terrible in the first half, due to the fact he was more interested in doing rash tackles, than play football, but in the second half, he played very well
and about Anelka .. all i have to say is taht hes rubbish, and the fact that Trezege (how ever its spelt) didnt take part in teh game, shows how crap Domenech really is as a coach … its not every day you get two good team, with tow rubbish coaches playing each other

I watched it. Yes France could have won it if they decided to push forward a little more but they were happy with the point. A shame because I wanted to see the italians eliminated, and losing there would have helped a lot.
So, Joe, apparently you’ve decided Diarra is crap and won’t change your mind even if he single handedly wins three world cups, ten premierships and eight champions leagues. Talk about picking a side before seeing the facts.

i agree gazzap
no chance of playing a 4-5-1
if we do , we will be on the back foot before we start.suggesting 4-5-1 is ridiculous !. We will need goals on the road , not midfield dominance !
(you might find a 4-5-1 employed once we are 2 goals up) but…
RVP and DUDU played to well internationally to be overlooked , if certain people watched the internationals they might understand how important a tool they are in the selection process
based on current form!

I don’t really care about the current board continuing on there merry path , or if dein or krankie takes over.So get your facts straight it ain’t no dream of mine AND I NEVER SAID IT WAS!
But what i’m saying is if you think that this is the last you’ll here of RED and WHITE your sadly mistaken, everything has its price. So i should say to you , get it out of your head that the board will stay firm on NOT SELLING SHARES in the future, because DD is coming like creeping jesus !
And everyone has there price , he’s taken his own sweet time to get into bed with the right parties with the financial clout to succeed .Also he wants arsenal, he turned down other positions with other clubs to mount this challenge..
its NOT my bubble that will be burst …
I only care about the football ON THE PITCH. But i know about business and business registration , and there ain’t no way DD will sit on his arse-nal ,he obviously has a strategy ,and registered a business name for take over purposes .krankie will eventually sell up to dein , thats gotta be the game plan .

i normally dont entertain discussions with individuals like joefootball, but to round the italy-france game up, if any Italian player deserved man of the match, it was Cannavaro .. henry looked out of his depth against him, and Anelka didnt fare much better .. having said that, the Domenech tactics of leaving the play to Vieira/Makele/Malouda is certainly not a recipe for creativity
I for once am very happy to count Diarra amongst our squad and believe he’ll be a great success for us
if only Ribery played for us as well !!!!!
this will give us an extra option especially with regards to the Gallas/Gilberto situation

I care because I don’t want Arsenal to fall into any group who just want the club to milk it for what it can provide; money. Luckily this Board says they won’t sell; so if Dein wants to buy the shares for say 50k per share using the so called Red and White Company and they say no, what can Dein do? I’m saying that Dein is only dreaming big, it won’t happen. Today (BBC Sports), the Board has emphasized that they’re prepared to talk to any shareholder but sale is off the table. In fact Peter Hill-Wood said they’re not interested in hearing the point of view of Dein because they’ve known his views for about 25 years now so his views are not new. He wanted to sell the club to Kroenke and they said no; he’s gone on to sell his shares to Usmanov or whatever and he’s no more a shareholder. He’s a fan and no more in the decision making circle of the club. So he can continue to dream of becoming Chairman of the club as he dreamt of selling the club to Kroenke and becoming Chairman and was stopped. Dreams are always good but actualising the dreams is another matter. Arsenal don’t need investments, let alone from Russian and American ‘money draculas’. Its investment is the new stadium and it’ll provide the resources for the club to succeed now and the forseable future. THE SO CALLED INVESTORS CAN BUY SPURS; IN FACT SPURS IS SAID TO BE ON SALE FOR 250 MILLION. It’ll be better for Dein to move Usmanov’s money there as he’s going fail to achieve his dream. Arsenal is not MANU, POOL or Chelsea who sold out. He can get Kroenke on his side but that does not mean that he’ll gain control of the club, as AST and the Board will still retain control. He’s been plotting to gain control of the club by fair or foul means and I’m saying that he can’t achieve it. Yes everything has a price but it does not mean that because they have a price they’re also saleable. It depends on the value the holder places on that assets and I’m saying that the Board won’t sell because they see the shares as a HERITAGE whilst Dein saw them as a commercial items. IF I WERE DEIN I WILL STAY AT HOME HOME AND MAKE USE OF THE WINDFALL OF MORE THAN 74 MILLION. He bought his shares for less than 300k. He’s wasting his time dreaming big. AST is also taking the copuntermeasures to resist nayone who’s plotting to sell Arsenal. ARSENAL NEEDS STABILITY and those who can ensure that is the current Board not Dein and the Russians/Americans.

Wow, not to be mean, but you completely misread what i wrote yesterday. I didnt say that Wenger would sign on the 25th. I meant on that day (Jun 25th) that YOU said that you KNEW he wouldn’t sign. Not “considered leaving in april” (which is what dein claims in the article you used to try to prove yourself right) or anything else you’ve been bleating on and on about these last couple days.
But you were wrong. Why can’t you admit that? Just admit it. I asked you if you were wrong would it be OK to throw it in your face as you did all of us when we were wrong about Henry. So i am simply following suit.
Only difference is, back then, you were REVELING in being right about something that could’ve been detrimental to the club (turns out we’re doing alright without TH14); and yet while we celebrate re-signing the best manager in world football, instead of just admitting you were wrong and being happy that our nightmate didnt come true, you jump for joy that he may or may not have had doubts about continuing his career, using twisted logic just to prove to yourself that you were “right”
It must be torture for you to be an arsenal fan.

i agree at this current point in time and having wenger at the helm for another 3 years, he has managed to keep us competitive, whilst spending little money in the process, its very wide open for debate that we don’t need the billionaires money at all. Fair comment !
but the boy is 57 , and will be 60 when his term is over. I’m sure retiring will be on the cards shortly after , maybe he will be around another 5 years after that , but , if you got someone like martin jol or that git jose as our new ‘club manager MOULD’ who can only buy big names to stay competitive, you would want to have some FUTURE structure in place. EG. a big MONEY owner ..
Im not against dein taking over , remember the emirates stadium is a new virtually untapped money source producing machine that will take 3 or 4 years to gauge its real profit producing capabilities
, I’m sure thats the REAL reason no one wants to sell the shares , i’m sure it makes far more revenue than highbury , so why would you give it up ?!
its like buying beach front land and putting a HUGE house on the shore front! would you sell the land before its developed? would you wait until more people move in , making the land value increase ?.. Its more complicated than working out the cost of a pie and multiplying it by 60 000 seats .
I can understand PHW wouldn’t want to sell the arsenal . but the others WILL HAVE THERE PRICE .
Im sure !
and they are waiting for that beach front land to increase with inflation . But like i said whilst arsene is at the helm he will regulate and keep in check the quality control on the pitch , what the guys with the big bucks do in the board room , is their business . We can speculate all day long but
time will tell if dein is pissing on an electric fence!
My personal view is that he will return , and thats the ONLY reason arsene stayed on !
Friendship in business is a wonderful thing !
2touch
Its quite easy to understand .
ARSENE signed on the 6th of September 2007,
If he want to sign before , he would have !
HE HAD ENOUGH CHANCES !!!
but he didn’t , meaning HE WAS NON-COMMITTAL
in its lead up to the start of the season. If you don’t find that DD’s plea for him to sign on as manager again.., ‘fishy’ ..
And Then ‘low and behold’ arsene signs 4 days later , after over 5 months of speculation and NON commitment , i would say you really need some coaching on the issue of human body language. You my friend are 2 cans short of a 6 pack if you still have trouble with what im saying!
Then dein states arsene was leaving arsenal at the end of his term but he wanted him to stay, GO FIGURE !! I PICKED UP ON IT ! back in june !
think about it . if he was doing it for the betterment of his young players and the club , he would of signed on june 25th LIKE I STATED common sense prevailing.
Which would of stabilized rumors like fabrigas and gallas leaving !
No one knew the fixtures at that point we could of got liverpool ,chevs and man u ‘away’all IN A ROW,
It showed to me like i presumed he didnt really care about them , and only cared about GETTING OUT! (due to deins removal)
He was NON – COMMITTAL until DD released his statement (2nd sept) for arsene to re-sign ..
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand the bits in the middle .
Yes arsene did re-sign and and eventually i was proved wrong, but if arsene wanted to quit after DD left in april- may , im sure he still wanted to leave in JUNE when ‘like i said HE WOULD’ .. @!
AT THAT TIME I WAS 100% CORRECT IN MY JUDGMENTS AND FEELINGS ! SO ADMIT THAT !!!
at the time I WAS RIGHT , god knows what happening between then and there ,but deins statement is my guess !
AND HE HASNT CAME OUT AND DENIED IT ! SO DEINS STATEMENT WAS OBVIOUSLY CORRECT !
AND AT THE TIME ‘SO WAS I’ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and although it cant be proved, i’m sure if dd didn’t mount this take over challenge with RED AND WHITE arsene’s signature would still be up for grabs ! TODAY!
It proves to me , with comments in the past that wenger stated recently…
‘ he didn’t want to sign a new contract with takeovers looming And with the clubs unstable future’
, and then 4 days after DD drops a bomb shell called RED AND WHITE with hints of takeovers , he signs on the dotted line ASAP !!
i wasn’t wrong . At the time i stated it !!!
so im not sure what your really trying to prove??
By: ethangooner on September 11, 2007

why didnt arsene sign a left winger..who will cover rosicky if injured..may be hleb..but it isnt his natural position..rest all are central midfielders..he signs players who may not really be our requirements..but who he feel is right..so many CM and RB are prove of it…i love arsene wenger..he exactly does what what others wont do in his position…

your right!!! wingers are needed , but the problem we face is getting a winger into the club at 1stly at the right price and secondly the required skill level .. to be honest there isn’t too many who have the skill level who are considered natural wingers, i think arsene fancies himself to make them up , walcott being one of them and eboue being another . plus hleb and rosicky . he obviously feels dudu and RVP went called for will fill in too . NOT IDEAL !
but when your doing england on a budget what do you expect… ??
