Dein, Dia-Wanna Another Midfielder And Pompey

A day offline thanks to the incompetence of a certain well-known Telecommunications company, just at the time when the ‘battle lines’ are being drawn (© The Daily Mail); another reason to not want Arsenal’s future to be Orange, as if any were needed. On the subject of The Daily Mail, there is one set of journalists who must have died and wondered if they had gone to Media Heaven (or Hell as it is more commonly known). They have been able to play all of their ‘trump’ cards in the space of forty eight hours; a bastion of Englishness under threat, dodgy Eastern European’s and the re-ignition of The Cold War, according to their latest report. Here they come riding on their Chargers in defence of a Club upon whom they have heaped oppobrium and scorn for the past eighteen months for not having enough English players in their starting line-up. It is The Crusades once more and I, for one, cannot help but have giggling fits at their brazen opportunism.

So to the transfer day drama; Arsene fibbed. He signed Lassanna Diarra; essentially a central midfielder but with enough versatility to play at Right Back apparently. It is a curious signing in many respects. Not because the player is without talent; the limited viewings I have had of him in action suggest he has the potential to be a very good player. The award of Chelsea’s Young Player Of The Year is a double edged sword; it is an accolade but they are not exactly noted for ‘blooding’ young players, evidence by his twenty one starts in two years at the Club. The oddity is the signing of a player whose positions are those which are well served at the Club; we have more Central Midfielders at the Club than can comfortably fit into a Hackney Cab with the Right Back situation not far behind. It has to be said that his signature has to signal the end of at least two players careers at Arsenal. A quick check of the squad shows that Gilberto, Diaby, Song, Flamini and Diarra are all fighting for the same place in the team. Likewise, Diarra is in competition with Eboue, Hoyte and I guess, Flamini for the Right Back position if Sagna is unfit. The simple maths of it all does not fit unless Arsene has other ideas for, say, Diaby or perhaps even concerns about his ongoing fitness.

More likely though, Song would be the one to make way for him, all things being equal, although perhaps Arsene has had an indication from Gilberto that he would be unwilling to continually sign one year contract extensions once his current contract gets to renewal time. If there are to be exits, and I think it inevitable, I suspect that it would be one of Flamini or Hoyte; the former because he wants regular first team action, something that is open to question in twelve months time and the latter because it simply cuts off the first team, full stop. It is a nice problem to have though and one which only time will tell was a sage move in the transfer market or if Arsene is developing GG’s old tendency to just buy lots of players for one position.

The key advantage that I can see, aside from the continued future planning, is that allows Arsene to fully exploit a policy of not rushing players back from injury, giving him breathing space in both positions to play Diarra should he so chose to allow that one extra game, as opposed to say putting a player back into the side earlier than he is comfortable with, risking a repetition of the setbacks suffered last season.

So to this afternoon’s game; Portsmouth come in decent form and will, I am sure, prove a stern test. Despite not beating either of United or Chelsea, they will have been bouyed not necessarily by the results but certainly their performances. However, this is a team that we have to set out to beat and be reasonably confident of doing so. Having said that, the defence will need to concentrate to control Muntari and Kanu but are capable of doing so. With the signing of Glen Johnson, it is expected that Lauren will play right midfield. This will mean that Rosicky faces a defensively competent opponent; however the question is whether or not Lauren’s legs can keep pace with the movement of the Arsenal midfield, injuries may have taken their toll on the player.

For Arsenal, no further news on Alex Hleb – that I have seen anyway – so I would assume that he will probably miss out. It makes the choice of team a little easier I guess, with the starting line-up almost picking itself until you get to the forward line. The defence will remain unchanged from midweek with neither Sagna nor Eboue apparently available. In midfield, it is too soon to expect Diarra to participate at any level. I would expect him to push for a place on the bench as early as the Tottenham game though. Up front is a real quandry. Whilst it is certain that RvP will start, it is a case of who with. It would be easy to look purely at Portsmouth and assume that they will have two big rough, tough, Centre Backs and be inclined to put Adebayor in there for muscle. However, Eduardo has more pace and is equally good, if not better in the air. Whether he plays better with RvP than Adebayor is debatable and probably down to lack of time together than anything else. A difficult choice but I think in this instance, I would be inclined to start with Adebayor and bring on Eduardo as an impact player although probably with about twenty to twenty five minutes to go, as opposed to the last fifteen. My starting line-up would be:

Almunia; Hoyte, Toure, Senderos, Clichy; Walcott, Fabregas, Gilberto, Rosicky; RvP, Adebayor

with a bench of

Fabianski, Flamini, Eduardo, Denilson, Bendtner

If Hleb is fit, then I would start him in place of Rosicky, dropping Denilson from the bench. Walcott has the pace to trouble Hreiddarsson on the right and I see no reason to change that irrespective of Hleb’s fitness. However, the Belorussian’s dribbling skills will trouble Lauren and Johnson more than perhaps Rosicky would. The key though is getting people in to the box; it is of little use having players who can work the wings if they do not have sufficient targets in the area. Wednesday night proved how well that can work; let us hope that the lessons have been learned.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Surely Denilson or Diaby could get a place in the bench instead of Alex. I really don’t see Song getting many opportunities with this new signing. I’m positively intrigued by Arsène’s plans regarding squad rotation. Maybe Diarra can play right mifield?

  2. Nacho,

I have changed my mind – you’re right I think Denilson will go on the bench and I suspect AW will go with two forwards rather than two defensive midfielders, bring Bendtner and Denilson into my squad, dropping Song and Traore. The only thing that may make the original selection correct is that he may be conscious of the fact that we were left somewhat lightweight against City with two injuries in the Back Four and perhaps against Portsmouth may want some cover in case Gilberto has to fall back into the Centre and Flamini is required elsewhere.

Given that it is a home game though, I would opt for the two forwards as the pressure is more on us being the hosts.

  3. Can’t imagine what Arsene is planning with Diarra.

Maybe he’s supposed to be an option for right-midfield, and Hleb is to be moved from that role for good.

Or maybe Arsene sees Hoyte evolving into a central defender?

Otherwise as you say, it looks like an embarrassment of riches in CM and RB positions.

  4. I think mr Wenger wants his midfield to be a unit and not left, center, center, right. A midfield that rotates on the field and every player is comfortable in every position

  5. Gotto go with u Oskar.
Diarra is a very potent player in my view who’s creative and unafraid to tangle with anyone. A true soldier in the Veira/Mascherano/Makelele model who can penetrate if need be. He’ll have freer room to express himself and boy, we are going to enjoy this young man.
Having such quality & youth in central midfield is fantastic. It’ll allow for greater rotation & fresher legs w/o quality loss.

    DEFENSIVE-ALL UTILITY
    Gilberto-Flamini-Diarra–Denilson-Eboue-Song
    ATTACKING-ALL UTILITY
    Fabregas-Hleb-Rosicky-Walcott-Diaby

The rotational flexibility is quite impressive. I hope AW makes it all work out. We’ll be able to outrun most teams.

  6. Portsmouth is a team of experienced heads. An early goal would force their hand though. We’d then have more chances to kill them off via counterattacks. An early goal by them would be quite unheathy and might yield a draw which we don’t really need based on how the EPL table looks now. Can’t wait for us to play Liverpool!

  7. Oh yeah, at prob 3m, buying Diarra was a no-brainer! He will become a regular for Les Bleues why not grab him before he’s big time? Well done AW! If need be we’ll add a LW in Jan, though I think Gibbs might be up to it with some Carling cup games under his belt.

  8. eduardo must start. he is the only experienced goal scorer we have. RVP should be on the bench. he doesnt play well with anyone and lacks the qualities that this arsenal team require. adebyaor may be clumsy at tiem but he at least knows how to link with a fwllow striker. i think bendtner is the best bet overall but he is young and raw and needs tiem to make the step up aso best to leave him on the bench. after all, he has made a big imapct in thegames agaisnt fulham and blackburn this season after coming on in the second half. it should be obvious to anyone that RVP isnt right for the way arsenal play. he cant link with fwellow strikers, his passing is genrally weak, he cant head the ball an has little physical strength up front, his touch is often poor and he doesnt make the runs that a striker should – in hort he can play neihter the Bergkamp role nor that of the out and out goalscorer. at best he is an impact player who can come on and do soemthing as an indivual that makes a difference. unfortuantley he has become the new Henry, undroppable. if he is our first choice striker we will struggle this season.

  9. I think one probably has to evaluate the circumstances around the transfer.

I think the offer was made and has been lying on the table for some time.

With Dein gone (remember, it was Dein who went after chelsea over the cashley affair, PHW wanted to just let it lie), maybe there is a little less animosity between the clubs?

I would imagine that chelsea felt they didn’t want the player, and were looking for other offers. When none came in, they took AW up on his.

AW will have planned to do without him, but when the opportunity arose, he grabbed it.

I think we’re actually looking at 2 stand-ins for Bert.

I think Bert has got maybe 2 seasons left in him, including this one, and I think he’s going to be used at CB every now and then as well.

I think Diarra and Song are the Berts of the future. Diaby is more of a box-to-box player, and offers a different dynamic, and The Flamster is either going to leave at the end of this season (he hasn’t signed a new contract yet as far as I know), or he is going too be our utility man.

Personally I hope he stays, there’s not many players with his drive and determination, and yes, skill, who can cover as many positions on the park as he can.

His versatility buys you cover all over the pitch, and therefore gives you more opportunity to have extra options on the bench.

I think we are quite possibly going to keep all of our players, and we are going to see some interesting combinations, especially on cold, wet nights up north.

People seem to be unaware that Song was one of our most creative players in the reserves, but he also has a very strong presence.

Imagine playing against fat sam’s thugs as follows:

    ——–Manny——–

    Sagna—-Kolo—-Billy—-Gael

    Eboue—Diarra—Diaby—Song

    ——Ade—-Bendtner—–

One could mix and match a bit of course, but I don’t think fat sam’s thugs would feel to happy facing that little lot.

  10. [...] The Red Corner Following on from the earlier catch up post after yesterday’s broadband debacle, a briefish look at the papers seen so far this morning. [...]

  11. Mike

Interesting team but I think it has too many ‘first choices’ for the Carling Cup. It is a good tie for Arsene to have; Newcastle won’t field their strongest XI but it is a stern test.

I would expect the team to be something like:

    Fabianski, Hoyte, Toure, Senderos, Traore

    Walcott, Diaby, Song, Gibbs

    Bendtner, Eduardo

It won’t be a completely novice team, as most of last years were not but he will not risk all of his first choice players. It could be Diarra into the RB slot, Hoyte the middle of the back four. Or Diarra in RM with Walcott up front with Bendtner.

Much will depend on injuries and the slew of fixtures around that tie.

  12. Song is no longer needed, he may have been good in the reserves, but in the first team he stinks, there are enough other better players to be on the bench. Today is a real test as though we have more points than last year we have done worse against the teams we played, last year we beat Blackburn 2-0 and drew with Prtsmouth so if we win today its a very positive sign.

I agree that RVP is a problem till we find someone he can play with as a strike partner lets hope Ade does it today. Liverpool striker strength is theyhave Torres, Crouch, Kuyt, and Babel to rotate, we dont have that luxury.

Walcott faded badly aginst Sparta so if he does start and begais to lose his effectiveness, he should be replaced with Eduardo quickly, otherwise I prefer EDS on the left in the starting line up, and Bentdner to play at least 20 minutes.

  13. Mike

I think Reserves is the level where Song feels most suited. He is not and will not be a 1st team regular, especially now Diarra is in,

He is like a dying dog that needs to be put out of his misery and either sold or loaned to a team who are on his level which in my view is either bottom 6 Premiership or Championship.

Proof is in the pudding, I see the potential in every single one of kids but you will always have the odd one or two who dont fulfil their potential. He was a very stocky lad when he came and maybe wenger thought his technical skills would come along a lot more, well they havent, he looks lazy to me and his distribution and ability to be knocked of the ball despite his frame are truly shocking.

Flamini agreed, He is our Grimandi, he will never be world class in any one position but as a utility player he is gold dust

As for today, the RB position worries me, That Muntari is deadly and will punish us if we are not on top of our game at RB. I would be tempted to start Flamini there as he is the better defensively. I would prefer Diarra but I don think he will be thrown in the deep end. I would also like to see Eduardo start out on the LW (Seen as we didnt buy one Bah Humbug)

    Almunia

    Clichy
    Senderos
    Toure
    Flamini

    Eduardo
    Cesc
    Gilberto
    Hleb

    RVP
    Adebayor

Bench: Fabianksi, Diarra, Walcott, Rosicky, Denilson

  14. This will be a hard game and all this talk about portsmouth being fielded with all old players is nonsence.

They have Muntari, Kranjcar, Taylor, Utaka, Mvuemba, Cranie, Glen Jhonson all young players and all pushing to play in the game.

I see this being a benana skin, they are very good against the top sides in the league, Harry knows how to get a result from us. 2-2 is my prediction.

  15. I think everyone is being just too unkind to Song.
He looked good in some pre-season games and played superbly well at times for Charlton when on loan there last season.
Don t forget he is still only 20 years old with loads of developing time to come. I still believe he can come good if the fans keep of his back long enough – obviously Arsene thinks that too

  16. Then Loan time would be good for him Jim

He makes too many mistakes in our first team and looks out of his depth, now that the Premiership is so strong you cant afford to carry anyone even if it is to help their development. Now we have Diarra, to me he has moved even further down the pecking order, look where he is

Cesc, Gilberto, Diarra, Flamini, Diaby, Denilson, Song.

He is 7th fighting for 2 positions and that is not going to develop him at all. I think the loan window opens again next week so I expect to see him move down a level.
