It seemed for a while, well OK seventy nine minutes, as if this was heading the same way as so many matches have done in The Emirates, a draw. The luck in front of goal was not there; a missed penalty, which was frankly awful compared to the one that RvP scored against Fulham.
City defended well and we toiled away. Whilst it was nice to sit in the sun, being a player in it would not have been so much fun, especially for City with their policy of defending deep and hitting on the counter-attack. To surrender so much possession meant they chased shadows for most of the afternoon and in the end that policy very possibly cost them a point.
The City defence were stout in their work and brought a fair amount of luck with them; Caspar Schmeichel flapped and clawed several times at the ball but each time got to it, as well as producing some good saves. Richards and Dunne were resolute, the former confirming his reputation as a genuinely promising talent who is equally comfortable on the right or in the centre of defence whilst his partner there is unrecognisable from the man turned inside out, upside down and back to front during the 5 – 1 win at Maine Road a few seasons back. The new faces may mean City are unrecognisable but three wins out of four has meant that they are playing with confidence.
I think Arsene contributed to this though. The injury beforehand to Senderos would not have helped nor would Sagna’s departure but the absence of a dedicated defender on the bench exacerbated those losses. However, both Gilberto and Flamini did well enough when required. I do however think Arsene got it totally wrong with Adebayor. It was obvious that he was making his first appearance as a player this season, his touch understandably awry; there is no doubt in my mind that he should have been given half an hour yesterday as a sub and then start in midweek. That he did not give up trying is a credit to him but there were a couple of times yesterday when the more predatory striker that we are led to believe Eduardo is, may have been more centrally placed to receive the ball in the area. However, that is a lot of if’s, but’s and maybe’s; in the end it does not matter because three points were taken and it is good to see that even though the season is only three games old, the only reason we are not equal on points with Chelsea is the three points we have to take from the game in hand due to the ECL Qualifiers.
The goal was a well taken. Hleb had put in the performance on the right to suggest that his move to right may not detract from those in the first games. The timing of the release of the ball into Fabregas’ path was, as it turned out, perfect and the finish too powerful for Schmeichel to keep out.
Overall, it is fair to say that the rhythm and passing is not working at the peak level we know that it can with a number of stray passes yesterday afternoon. In defence though, we have regained the concentration required, two goals conceded in four games is an excellent return. Almunia had a bit of work yesterday but nothing too taxing to deal with. The key though is that when required, he was up to the task and more importantly the four immediately in front of him seemed to have confidence in him to do it. Toure and Gilberto worked well, both mopping up behind the other when required. Had Eriksson known about Senderos in time, I suspect Bianchi might have played from the outset with specific instructions to get ‘onto’ Gilberto, to pressurise him in his first game back. Flamini was competent as cover at right back; the injuries suffered by Sagna and Senderos are not believed to be serious enough to preclude their participation on Tuesday night. Denilson deserves credit for his performance yesterday, solid in his work with decent passing to boot. Fabregas though must be looking forward to the return to central midfield of Gilberto, to free him from some of his defensive duties. He has worked well with the ’stand-ins’, providing cover to the back four which is perhaps some of the reason that he has not yet appeared to reach the heights of performance from last season.
We need to remember that it is still early in the season. From nothing in terms of competitive football to two games a week takes a leap. It is no wonder that some of the passing is sluggish, particularly in testing conditions as they were yesterday. New partnerships up front are forming, the players understanding where their colleagues are favouring making their runs. A couple of occasions yesterday showed that it was not quite clicking yet but it will come.
Onto the papers. Despite protestations to the contrary from Arsene, it seems the media want us to buy someone. The News of the World reports that we have made a £9m bid for Obefami Martins which they believe will tempt Allardyce. Gael Clichy is reported in the same paper as saying,
Losing Thierry Henry this summer was a bitg shame but you can play without him. But to cope without of the best managers in the world – well that is different. For him to sign a new deal and for us to work with him for many years to come would be great for the team.
Well, it seems he may well get his wish with the new contract supposedly ready to be signed. In the same way that transfer gossip is treated, I’ll wait for the official confirmation of the deal being done.
’til Tomorrow.

As for the game yesterday i thought we fought very well and showed a lot of belief. Still not fluent at all, but showed good character. I still think the squad is a bit thin in places, but we’ll have to make do as Wenger has said that’s enough in the transfer market. Makes you wonder who on earth he’ll play in the Carling cup this year. I mean it’s usually youngsters, but the young players below the first team squad are “very” young this year. I think all but a couple are U18.

I think you are wrong about Ade YW.
Although it was obvious that his touch was not there he did enough running to worry & tire them in that heat. He has to play to get his touch.
I thought it was a game that would be won or lost at the end, when the players were tiring & so it was.
Flamini deserves special credit.
Despite what some people say about him, if you watch him carefully, he is a very intelligent player with a huge will to win. I am glad he stayed and hope he will remain with us. He is our Grimondi of the day. Very useful to have around.

So, after spending 80 minutes biting off my nails, I caught some of the Birmingham City game. Are Arsenal supporters aware that Steve Bruce played Johan Djorou in central midfielder against Derby??! He did well from what I saw …
Even the announcer claimed “Djorou has looked like a Rolls Royce so far … everything he does has a stamp of quality”
Wonder if Wegner anticipated his loanee defener playing an attacking role for the Brummies.

I think Djourou has gone to Brum to get a bit of steel. It doesn’t matter where he plays as long as he plays.
He has everything, apart from enough aggression as yet, to be a really top player.
I was amazed he went on loan but can see the logic now.

Your right about Ade everyone in ground could see he was not ‘match ready’ after 25mins!!
It still frustrates me why Wenger wont make early subs in second half Eduardo suited our style of play alot better when he came on.. & like u say he may have been there 4 one of those cut backs..
2 CMs in back 4 did very well.. personally I feel more at ease with Gilberto at CB than Senderos, i was pleasently pleased when i saw starting XI..
Ps. You have gotta love ‘Flamini’.. CM, RM, LB, RB how many players can do a job like that.. plus i love when he gets crowd goin, he & Kolo only ones that seem to do it, in 1st half we got a corner & Flamini got the ball by crowd & gestured ‘Come On’ with a punch & whole crowd responded… Love it

I disagree about Adebayor. Aw’s normal policy when returning players come back from more than a game out is to bring them on substitutes. I wonder why he deviated from that yesterday? Adebayor did not do badly yesterday but it was apparent that he needs time to get into the swing of things. He would have benefitted more from 30 minutes to welcome him back, especially as he was in Africa during the week.
He did work tirelessly and I credited him for that. However, I would suggest that Eduardo may well have run them ragged as well. He got a tough introduction last weekend, scored in the week and may well have scored yesterday.
His introduction when City were tiring was fine as he has the pace to trouble them. Whether that would have been better deployed from the start is something we won’t know and ultimately, it does not really matter because the three points were won.

I can understand the decision to go with Ade alongside RvP as the more ‘formed’ or experienced partnership but I agree that it was a mistake. For all Ades workrate and enthusiasm he wasn’t quite there and giving him half an hour in his first start of the season and a full game against Prague would have made more sense. For me either Bendtner or Eduardo would have given us a little more much needed sharpness both having played full competitive games, including internationals, already this season.
Credit to City though for proving that you don’t have to kick us to give us a game.

I still think he is looking for players, but is being coy, for all we know the deals may already be done. Mybe he is looking for loan first
Hleb is probably our most improved player. I did wonder if it would continue when he returned to the wing but fair play it has and the lad has confidence running through his veins
A great example of Footballing journalism in the People today, they have a snippet saying
Arsenal are trailing Ajax left-back Urby Emanuelson and Bolton youngster Kyle Bartley.
Funny that as if they had have checked out the Arsenal website they would have seen that we already have signed him. Kyle Bartley that is.

A number of the players were involved for the full 90 in midweek but I seem to recall reading that Eduardo came off after about an hour. Bosnia is only a couple of hours flight and no time zones unlike Adebayor. I think Cesc got eight minutes which hardly seems worth bothering to use him for that match.

Yes I though Ade was kept on for about 10 minutes too long. He was clearly knackered but as I said before he was being used to keep them on the back foot.
He needed the time on the pitch & we needed his muscle so that the game could be opened up.
What a player that Richards is. From what I have seen he does have a tendency to fade in the 2nd half though & we managed to exploit that.

I think we have to bear in mind our game on wednesday maybe Eduardo is being held back for that. I was very hot yesterday both teams tired in the 2nd half. Helb especially there were several times City had 2 against one. The pitch also seemed dry despite the spinklers and the ball wasn’t running totally true.

That is one thing City did very well in midfield and on the flanks. They hunted in packs and when they won the ball were able to play short passes to a colleague. Good practice for the European games as this is a common tactic.

48k a week for Anelka, that is not bad bear in mind he would get you 15-20 goals a Season.
I would love to see him back Yogi, but I just dont think it will happen.

I think that the Ade / RVP partnership is more orthodox. Also, Wenger seems definitely more open to mixing it up with some direct floated central balls to Ade who can make a nuisance of himself and break the ball to oncoming midfielders. I think that Wenger shows great loyalty – it looks like he will give Ade & RVP the first crack at the front 2 positions and ease Eduardo in. Ditto, with Flamini. I only saw highlights but note that you all say he was excellent.
I only saw the highlights but City did have some very good attacking positions which with more conviction could have hurt us. But as Wenger said, they are now a good team.
Chelsea were steeped against Portsmouth. Portsmouth are a very big side with good pace and organisation who will trouble us when they come to the Emirates shortly. Rednapp has added 3 players who would all have had some merit perhaps in adding to our squad:
Sylvain Distin – experienced strong centre back with good pace and positional sense – on a free
Sulley Muntari – central midfeild strongman, makes Essien look like a wimp
John Utaka – left sided rocket man – did you see his speed in scoring the other week against Bolton?
What do you think?
By: AlanG on August 26, 2007
at 9:20 am
The problem with playing Ade is that we seem to overplay the long ball. I noticed that at times early on last season. I don’t know whether that is a planned tactic or whether Ades movement invites that type of pass but a keeper and defenders with decent positional sense will most often snuff out the threat as they did yesterday. Without Ade we seem more inclined to keep the ball on the ground and that is when we are at our most productive.
By: Amos on August 26, 2007
at 9:28 am
Jimmy, I agree about the possible grounds for fielding Ade. However, what bothered me most was our tactic of playing balls in the air (into their box that is). It seemed that we played a large amount of our game in their final third this way and this was playing to the strengths of Richards and Dunne who mopped up easily. Whether this tactic was behind the use of Ade over Eduardo [Prince], I’m not certain but I hope we reflect on this approach and match our future tactics to our opponents. A great day out in the sun though and a pleasing start.

Eduardo played 90 mins midweek, Ade played from the start due to this, and i also feel Eduardo will start against the czechs on wendesday and score.
Good result but bit of a shaky performance at times but then with 2 forced changes to the defence, impacting the midfield also in the first 20 mins wouldnt have helped.
Its good to have gilberto back and ade will improve when he gets match fit, which he clearly wasnt yesterday, but that run will do him good.
Wenger says both Sagna and Senderos injurys are minor and will both be ok for the champs league.

Hi. Watched the game last night, and I agreed with most of you here that Ade was off the mark. The positive is he was winning balls in the air but otherwise, he wasn’t really able to offer much in terms of penetration. He wasn’t able to bring the ball past defenders and he his runs off the ball wasn’t very good too. But maybe he needs more game to get his touch back.
I’m begginning to change my view on Flamini. I think he’s a very valuable player to us, not just because of his flexibilty to play in any position except the goalie, but the way he plays shows off a lot of his commitment and his never-say-die attitude is a valuable asset when the chips are down. I felt he was very involved in the game and he seems to be everywhere! Really nice!
Gilberto’s reading of the game is superb and for me he is an amazing player.
Nice game. I was quietly confident we would be able to score even after RVP missed the penalty. I’m just surprised the goal came so suddenly from Fab4 in such a simple manner.
I’m certainly looking forward to the next game where we’ll definitely be more fluent in our play

The value AW places on Flamini & Hleb is getting clearer by the game. Hleb has been my favourite among our recent buys primarily because I cannot name 10 footballers today that possess that much coordinative intelligence between brain & feet (He clearly plays in STEREO!). Improving strength & stamina was/is prerequisite to greater decisiveness in front of goal. His short passing game is impeccable & in my view he’s on his way to becoming one of the best midfielders ever.
Flamini is pure passion, all-utility and heart, so so necessary on ANY team. It’s infectious and extremely welcome on a team of smooth operators to have a player never afraid to bring the ruckus!

Will we rest players on wednesday? I think Hleb’s second goal in Prague gives us room for this. I would rest Cesc, RVP and the Flamster, who have a yellow, at least. RVP also played an international, so it would do him good. And both Ade and Eduardo could do with 90 minutes of playing time or close.

Of course you are allowed an opinion. It’s up to us to change it to the correct one through intellectual debate! We’re working on Pat & the rest although there are some that you just have to give up on, aren’t there Ethan.
I would disagree with you about Song – if anyone would benefit from a loan deal, it is he because even with the best will in the World, he is not going to get regular enough first team football at the present time. He did well for Charlton last season and more pitch minutes than the odd 2 or 3 here and there would bring him on, as someone pointed out earlier.

I welcome your opinion Geoff but like to know how you are coming to your conclusions.
It is just that my opinion is the total opposite of yours.
I don’t know how many players you want for each position but we seem to be as well stocked for quality back up as Chelsea & Man Utd.
If you have too many players that means some will have no chance of playing & disatifaction can grow, harming team spirit.
Duke-
You are right of course but any signing is a gamble.
AW likes a little cheap punt occasionally. Players like Mendes & Stepanovs, players that could be molded into something. Stepanovs for all his faults did have a little spell, where he did well for us eg Juve at Highbury. Vivas was a current Argie international on a free who should have been better than he was.
No one is flawless but I think AW & his staff know quite a bit more than the rest of us put together.

Great report Yogi, spot on as usual. You’re right, we’re really not clicking at the moment, I thought we were dreadful in the first half, improved as the game went on. But no concern, we have the players, the football will come, results will do for now. Eduardo had a nightmare I thought when he came on yesterday, looked nervous, but I’ve already seen enough from him to know he will come good. I think possibly one thing he has to come to terms with, is that whilst he had the pace to run past defenders in Croatia, he probably doesn’t in the EPL, he should keep it neat and save his evident sharpness for the penalty area.

EDS needs 90 on weds while Hleb and RVP need a rest, be that a complete rest or just play a half. Players like Walcott and Denilson might be worth getting more game time into. Gilberto might be worth getting into midfield before pompey game.
Not sure whether Rosicky needs a rest or to play 90 because he does not look 100% yet. But it could be a risk to play walcott and Rosicky on the wings. However my team would be:
Almunia
Sagna Toure Senderos Clichy
walcott denilson gilberto Rosicky
EDS Ade
Interesting to see that Djourou was in midfield, which i understand he says is his fave position. its very possible he is the replacement for Gilberto come next year and wenger will either buy a centre back or hope Nortveit can come through. seems a bit of an odd one since we have millions of central midfielders and Diaby and Den cant really get a game, and meanwhile we are short of top quality centre backs – which JD definitely is one.

Don’t forget that for centre back we also have Matthew Connoly waiting. He was the substantive captain for the reserves and cuurntly on loan at Cochester for a year. A highly rated guy, he’s the who’ll be fighting for the position with Sendy next season. Mark my words.
Just by the way, why can’t Spurs beat United for once. They played better yet they couldn’t win. They were counting on penalty though but that’s always in the hands of the refree. Spurs always lose to United home and away, its depressing and also have been selling their top players to United for years. Their record against the top teams is so poor, I think its a psychological problem.
