Prague-matic Approach Wins Through

Sparta Prague   0
Arsenal   2   Fabregas 72, Hleb 90

Something that was missing might be making a return to Arsenal. The inability to win ‘ugly’ has been long held as a criticism of this Third Generation. A general consensus is that last night was one of those occasions. A performance that will have driven Arsene insane on one level, the passing game did not get going (or would it be better to say, not allowed_ but pleased him immensely on another. As he noted afterwards, ‘the whole team has a resilience and fight to the last second‘, showing patience in the face of opponents who it seems did not watch the Ajax game; if they had, they would have known that this group of players is not so easy to physically intimidate and is capable of giving as good as they get in that respect.

The positives from last night will only be so if progress is made to the Group stage and as importantly, they are transferred to the Premiership, starting on Sunday at Blackburn. Repka was the chief hatchetman, apparently promising to outmuscle the Arsenal midfield. As when he was in the Premiership, he was found wanting, unable to last the pace, succumbing to injury following a strong challenge from Fabregas. Looking physically stronger than before, the young Spaniard has never been shy of putting a foot in when required. He had to do so more often last night as for the first half an hour, the Czech’s were the better side.

Defensive concentration lapsed on a couple of occasions but not from the usual culprits; Gael Clichy was outwitted at the far post and Lehmann did well to divert the ball onto the post. How quickly the brickbats have to turned to plaudits for Jens; his general display last night was what is seen from him quite regularly but goes unremarked. He was solid with generally good distribution, especially for the crucial second goal. Toure and Gallas looked solid last night, dealing reasonably comfortably with possibly the tallest striker this side of Peter Crouch that they will have to deal with all season.

The pairing of Flamini with Fabregas in the centre last night would not be everyone’s cup of tea. However, despite the former’s lack of presence in terms of reputation, he works as hard as anyone for the team cause and should not be castigated or dismissed lightly. Given he supposed desire to leave in the Summer, his change of heart has reflected well, taking advantage of the absence of Gilberto to press his claim for being second choice in the centre of midfield.

The biggest problem last night though came as a result of the Sparta game plan. Too often Hleb and van Persie were left isolated, the gap between the forwards and midfield being too great, too often. It is a sign of the latter’s maturity in playing the lone striker that he is able to do so to good effect on nights such as this. Whilst he may not have scored, he continued to offer an outlet for the rest of the team when needed, his movement being continuous for most of the game. Indeed for the opener, he dragged his marker away from the centre of the area to create the space for Cesc to bury his shot following another good forward run by Clichy.

n the right, Eboue is being questioned as a wide midfielder. However, it is in game’s such as this that the benefit is probably more noticeable. He could not offer the attacking outlet that most want yet adds more bite to that side of the pitch in midfield than say, Walcott or Hleb, would be able to. Sagna behind him offered another solid performance, confirming that he is by far and away the best right back at the Club, defensively speaking. He may also provide the solution for left winger. The counter-attack that led to the crucial second goal was one of the best of that ilk, good distribution from the ‘keeper, a solid run from defence and a simple finish. Whilst his shooting is still not the finished article, the Belorussian aims for the corners more often than not, making even a scuffed shot difficult to stop. He is on a roll, long may it continue. I suspect at the moment that if the ball hit him on the backside in the centre circle, it would probably rebound into the opponents net.

The second goal though opens up more options for Arsene. UEFA Regulations stipulate that ‘single cautions from the Qualifying Phase that have not resulted in a suspension, expire on completion of the Qualifying Phase in question‘. It seems logical to me therefore that injuries permitting, the most participation that van Persie and Fabregas, possibly Flamini, should have in the Return is the Bench, only called upon if absolutely necessary. Assuming everyone is fit, Eduardo, Adebayor and Bendtner give enough options for the starting line-up whilst Fabregas could be replaced in the centre by Rosicky, Hleb or Diaby with Denilson or Walcott slotting into the left hand side of midfield. It is of course, a risky strategy, but a two-goal lead ought to be comfortable enough to do so, especially as the Czech’s have to attack more than they would like to and we ought to be able to pick them off on the counter in such moments.

Not the fantastic flowing footballing performance that everyone wants but another step in the right direction, showing that some of the painful football lessons at places such as The Hawthorns and Bramall Lane have been learnt.

Responses

  1. Man Hleb is on a roll! 2 for 2; I wonder whose streak will last longer, his or Spurs?

  2. Your right Yogi in terms of we are really able to cope with the physical side of playing inferior teams who feel their best option is to put the boot in. We give back more than we receive now and i just hope we are able to do the same to the lesser teams in the Prem. A good test will be at Blackburn which is not the easiest places to go and win i just hope we dont suffer post euro fatigue too much, the plus side is Blackburn are playing in europe tonight so hopefully it will balance itself out. Heres hoping!

  3. Are you reading my mind YW? I agree entirely. It’s great to see that if we are not allowed to play our game we can hang in there and take our chances when we get them. I’m sure if any team we meet wants to play football we’ll be ready for them too!

  4. Excellent report Yogi, you’re the best read out there right now, factual and sensible, keep it up. That used to be Arseblog but it’s pretty much evolved into farce now, a collection of bloggers’ opinions that are rolled out day after day, with little discussion of the match (which he usually hasn’t seen).

As you’ve said, not a great performance, but Prague and the referee were determined that the game be anything but a football match. There wasn’t much we could do but match Prague for strength and I think we did that with ease for the majority of the match.

  5. Good sensible report there as usual YW.

Completely agree about Jens, Eboue & the need for considered rotation because of the yellow cards.

Can’t resist pointing out our RB going down the left wing to make a pretty good goal.

  6. A lot of really good points in that piece Yogi.

On the Flamini/ Cesc pairing, Cesc seems to take a good half hour to get into games as he starts so slowly and a tad casually. Flaminis running and work rate helps compensate in that crucial period and Cesc invariably influences the game with increasing significance as it progresses.

  7. rosciky didn’t play so well yesterday, his attitude reminds me of paddy when he came to highbury with juventus.it seems he didn’t have the heart to play against his former(and let it be known beloved)club. :) anyway,3 points in the bag

  8. 3 points??? Are you sure? :-)

We still allow teams access to our back 4 by not defending very well from midfield..

Rosicky was the main culprit for not tracking his man back, so he needs to improve on that..

Apart from that – poor 1st half performance, much better in the 2nd – and good to see us win without playing well again – a nice habit to get in to.

  9. Eboue is quality player and I still think he could be a very good right back if he worked more on his defending. My concern is that he lacks the penetration and guile that is required from our wide players. We have many midfield players who can pass and move the ball in tight areas but sometimes we need a bit more penetration in the final third (Hleb excluded).

I think Eboue lacks the skill and attacking threat needed for that position. Just compare him to that of Chelsea, man u and Liverpools wide players. Thats not to say that he wont do a good a job for us there but I still feel if we signed a quality wide player on the left and then moved Rosicky out on the right we would have better shape and more penetration.

By the way, I loved the way Cesc completely smashed Repka moments after Repka was squaring up to Hleb. I think that was Cesc’s way of saying “you aint gonna fuck with us”!

    Anyone else notice that?

  10. Matt

Completely agree with you about defending from midfield and Rosicky in Particular.

Games like last night makes realise how important gilberto is to us!

  11. Nice one YW, I for one was elated when Flamini decided to stay. His pluses far outweigh his limitations. Hopefully with Adebayor, Eduardo, Walcott, Diaby & Denilson back we should move onto the next round. Fate has been on our side so far ( Jens 1st one to make a BIG mistake which he immediately rectifies with solid performances and further galvanizes the team—Bendtner able to show his abilities with Adebayor & Eduardo unavailable—-Hleb preferred in support striker role lasting & scoring @ 90minutes—game-masterstroke of hushing Gallas up with the armband while Gilberto, CAPTAIN OF BRAZIL is unavailable !!!!). Who could have written this script?Resiliance & Confidence grow wings in situations like this. All the better for the hard work put in. Bring on the tough tests, we want to WIN IT ALL!!!

  12. Good report, mate.

  13. Best match report so far this morning, although the general consensus is the new bite and toughness the team has accquired has been noticed by most of the press. This mean streak will be required more this year as already Portsmouth and Reading are ready to run and snap at the heels of opponents, this season looks likely to be the year of the athlete and stamina to kill teams off in the last quarter of the game, what the so called lesser teams may lack in technique they have been working on in their fitness
regimes, I do not doubt Arsenals ability to do what is required, only the depth of the squad could be the problem, sadly the Chavs tactics of absorbing the pressure and hitting back late may be the best tactic this season, Manure has suffered in their opening games by playing expansively
( and over confidently). I expect with teams running all over the pitch like whirling Dervishers their injuries will rise quickly and hopefully then we will be able to see more goals and skilfull play from the teams that are capable (AFC)

  14. great to see Arsenal battling to get wins. I actually enjoy watching the battles more than the free flowing stuff sometimes! not every week, but when its needed.

I did not see the cesc foul which according to radio 5 ‘overshadowed the win’. not for me it didn’t! fantastic, we need more of that.

the 4-5-1 formation is key in away european games. I really hope wenger sticks with that plan throughout the whole campaign. 4-4-2 at home is OK.

anyone else thinking here comes a cygan moment when Song came on? the moment he came on his firt touch was a pass straight out of play about 5 yards to clichy’s right. he then gave away 2 free kicks, missed a header and was found out of position in one of sparta’s attacks and all this within the last 10 minutes. I cant say I am warming to the guy. It could have been 1-1 at the end but 2-0 is a great result.

  15. Bit puzzled when the press insist we were just lucky and others with similar scores played well; am I becoming paranoid. YW great read, no need for me to comment. My feelings we are on a roll and the dice keep turning up our way.

  16. Matt and JJ Gooner

I also completely agree that most (but not all) our defensive frailties come from poor defending in midfield. It was particularly noticeable at times on Sunday, where our back line were clearing the ball out of the box, only to find the Fulham midfield with stacks of time to think about where they were going to pop it back in.

I am a big Gael Clichy fan but he does get caught ball-watching too often. He went to sleep last night, allowing that guy to hit our post. One mistake like that can get you knocked out of a cup competition. If he can eliminate that, then I think we have a very strong back line now.

  17. Great to see The Arsenal play with resolve and grit. It wasn’t
vintage Arseball, but you can’t ask any more from them at this stage of the season.
Flamini reminds me of the one and only Romford Pele, he can only get better. His late runs into the oppositions box have not yet been picked up on by the rest of the team yet. I can see him scoring his fair share if given a run in the team.
Cesc seems a little of the pace but apart from that, it’s all good.
Clichy is getting over exposed on the left, he needs help. We can’t expect him to do all the attacking and defending on the left side all season long.
With small improvements in places, no injuries and suspension. Then this squad has what it takes to mount a challenge in the EPL, anything else is a bonus.

  18. Gazzap – good points regarding Song unfortunately Wengers stubborn and likely to persist with him before selling him in a few years time – how much did AW pay for him?

  19. bloody spartans!!! :)

  20. I have to say that I prefer this Arsenal to the pretty passing Arsenal of before. All pre-season and now the team is playing like a ‘team’ and we are winning ugly and playing ugly as well, but who cares. I’d rather win that play pretty footy….

  21. He he he….look what happend to spurs with all that spending..they are non sense..have no policy or culture..we shud thank arsene for that..he is priceless..

guys can u suggest some bolgs of our rivals..am just interested to know what they feel..pls provide of spurs..manu ..chelsea..barcelona..newcastle..milan and real madrid..thanks..

how much time will Dudu take though ?

look what happend to ronaldo and rooney..chelsea or liverpool will loose points..we shud beat blackburn and then positives will build..but i dont want to underestimate blackburn..under mark hughes they are competitive side..so we shud be on toes and not get carried away..

  22. Gazzap

Good to see its not just me that thought that of Song’s contribution when he came on, I got slated on here last night for abusing him. I seem to remember one good game he had for us but that is it. You are right his early error could of cost us the win last night.

Guy is a Liability, I think we have a lot of very good promising youth players in our squad, and I personally think that you can generally judge how good a player is going to be in a short space of time,

I think this is his 3rd year with us now, and I have seen no potential or progress from him. I think Wenger sticks with him as he got him on a Exceptional Talent visa and probably does not want to risk problems getting players on that basis on the future.

The big snag is he is a confidence player and he is only going to get that confidence with a prolonged run in the 1st team. sorry that is not going to happen at Arsenal so the best thing for him as a player is to go off on loan at a club like Charlton where he will play the whole season.

  23. Old Timer I have to agree with you on the press. Some parts of the press core seem to have written their articals before the games are played. I get the feeling that they have a load of Arsenals demise with out TH14 headlines already saved to hard drives waiting to print. So far this team has showed them other wise and press don’t like it. Like you I’m of the feeling things are on the up and going our way.

  24. Glad we are playing like a team and giving it our all. Just watched the highlights on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5FOj9JzLgQ
We will certianly need to battle as hard against Blackburn this weekend. Nice to see we have 50% more points than United having played half the games, lets keep that going!!

  25. glad to see blackbeard have got an away game today in Finland. had they gone into our game with a weeks rest it could have been bad news for us. However, now I do expect us to get a win. hopefully we will have a couple of players back fit as well. will be a difficult game but with Man City, Portsmouth and spurs our next 3 games we cant afford to go there for a point. I would seriously think about resting Cesc if Diaby is fit again. looked tired at the end yesterday, like he was running in sand.

  26. Keep it tight for 60 mins then when it was obvious they couldnt keep up the tempo (the tempo of kicking the backs of the legs of the arsenal players) put together a few nice moves and create a few chances. Making sure to take a few this time. Bad as a spectacle but a great result. These places can be tricky but we did the job to a tee. Watching Sagna at right back is like having Ralph back. Its that same feeling of dependability , surely a must for a defender. Had to laugh though when he goes bombing through in the 93 min to create Hlebs goal. Great tribute to his fitness, and he even had the strength to lift Hleb to celebrate. But then what does he do ? Doubles over like hes gonna be sick and dont come up for air for another 2 mins. Brill. I love a player that runs his heart out for the club, hes got some skills to mind, but what a heart. Sagna3 i salute you.

Also a salute to Cesc, for going in Repkas knee, telling him hed be better off being substituted by doing that rolly thing the ref does to signal a sub and also playacting a limp when Repka came back on. Nice

  27. first Arsenal game I saw this year as away on hols
did see other premier league games but no Arsenal
now I have 3 questions regarding the team..
Can somebody explain what position Eboue is playing at?
I felt that for large parts, he was so out of it that we played virtually with 10 men..
Why does AW play Van Persie up on his own upfront?
He has got neither the speed nor the physical strength to deal with a lone striker role!
Last night reminded me of the Sheffield away game last season .. and I will say that he has NOT improved since then in this position and never will as he NEEDS a support striker to be effective.
Lastly and this is soemthing that has been raised here already, what does “famous” Rigobert’s nephew do at the AFC?? His bewildered looks and vast incompetence should ensure he has no place at our club..
maybe we should sell him to Barcelona or is he not good enough to play for them?
Now, as far as winning ugly is concerned, fine but I would like to see the team play better football because this aint good enough .. irrespective of ManU’s results so far, their team plays some great offensive football and they will win games over time .. I am a bit afraid that we dont have the quality on the pitch anymore to match them and it pities me to say so
Sagna looks a terrific buy and Clichy is as good as ever, but that really is it for the moment and I am afraid the wake up call will come rather sooner than later..
we played Fulham at home and Sparta Prague .. not exactly world beaters..

    Arsene, buy some talent please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. To be fair to Cesc he is not 100% fit yet as he is just getting over a virus but despite that he scored a goal, showed he cannot be intimidated in the middle of the park and took the ball off the toes of the Sparta player in the penalty area late on. Not bad I’d say!

BB – I’d say RVP is up front on his own because we are missing Eduardo and Adebayor so Arsene didn’t really have much choice as Bendtner is not yet experienced enough for such responsibility. Can’t you just be glad that we did the job?

  29. BB

I think Flint, Frank and Old Timer might well be passing comment on your post :)

To answer some of them points though

    1) Eboue is now second choice RB and has now moved to RM to give us more options, Views on this are mixed and I personally still need convincing but he is better there than I thought so far; Whether or not we should have bought a ready made player is debatable.
    2) VP 11 is upfront as we only have 4 Strikers and 2 of those are injured. Instead we are playing with Hleb in a DB10 type role just behind him, which so far is working very well for Hleb, although I am sure VP11 would be more potent with someone upfront with him. Dudu should be back at the weekend although given that we are away at BB I expect to keep the same system.
    3) Song, I do agree with you but some on here think it is not very nice to criticise him for being poo. I personally think he will never be a starting or regular (Or at least he shouldnt be) reserve team player, and should be farmed out on loan

I will hand over to Flint & co to give you their viewpoint

  30. Yay an ugly win! Strangely it makes me almost just as happy as seeing a typical, beautiful, Arsenal win… :P And on the beautiful side, Cesc was very quick to give credit to Gael Clichy who made his goal. Quoted on the club website, he said “90% of it was his (Gael’s) goal. He made the run, he made my assist, he told I had time, I just had to put it in the back of the net.” Now this is beautiful TEAM work.

BTW, pleased to see not just Spurs but also Bolton at the bottom of the table though it’s just 2 games. And seeing ManU draw twice, losing Rooney for a few weeks and Ronaldo for a few matches, reinforces my belief that we do have a chance this year. Injuries are part of the game, we were unlucky last year (still not entirely lucky now that we’re without Ade, Eduardo, Diaby and Denilson), maybe we could still get luckier than some this year. Who knows.

  31. it was a fantastic result, great that we were not bullied by a very big and rough team and two more goals from midfield is great.

thought lehman did well, gallas and toure handled the huge fella pretty well. clichy did amazingly for the goal. sagna was great again looks a wonderful buy.

thought flamini did well for him and fab had a much better game than saturday and was really getting stuck in. goal aside helb was average and hopefully we will see two forwards again very soon. eboue was awful and should not be played there and again rosicky was peripheral in the game. i assume he must get frustrated playing where he does. RVP worked hard and got kicked a lot, playing up front on his own is obviously not ideal was way too isolated all night. as sparta were tiring i was hoping to see bendtner and walcott come on and try and win the game and then we obviously got the goal.

overall great night’s work and would obviously love to see the wingers we keep talking about and another forward if wenger thinks bendtner is not ready to start games.

  32. forgot to mention song, his contribution was a total embarressment the guy can not be trusted even for 10 minutes on the pitch, he came on and gave the ball away everytime he got the ball. the idea was for him to help close up shop and had the opposite effect. wenger shold just get rid of him for ours and his sake, he can do a job for lower level teams but not for us.

  33. It appears that Ethan’s slightly better educated twin brother has turned up Pat !

  34. I thought you might like that Flint,

Dan, I think you might be right about lower level for Sideshow Song. I really think it is time for him to go on a Years loan at either a struggling Premiership team (Spuds maybe, they need a Midfield) or a Championship side.

He must have something otherwise Wenger would not have bothered, maybe he stood out a young age but had actually peaked. I do shiver whenever he takes his tracksuit off.

  35. hahaha ..well Flint .. I dont mind Ethan .. he at least doesnt fall for the wishy washy stuff .. will not continue arguing with you as I got other things to do .. simply I felt/feel that the team needs reinforcements or we will end up short of trophies again this season ..IMHO

  36. Sideshow Song..Haha. I think ship him off to America. they will take anyone that has played in the premiership. it’ll take them a couple of years to work out he is the reason they keep losing. he is like the crap player in the team at school that no one wants to pass to.

  37. he did well for charlton, not sure why he would want to be 6th choice for us and so clearly out of his depth, (surely he must know he is) when he could have decent career playing first team football elsewhere. his confidence must be low after even 10 minutes of such an unbelievably bad performance last night. we could probably get a few million for him as well.

  38. it was going well until your last line there dan

  39. i disagree i bet we could get 2m or him. we got that for muamba.

  40. Flint

Relating to a previous Eboue conversation I was simply saying I prefer my wingers in the silky skilled guise. With the ability either thorugh their dribbling or timing into the box to change matches. I am not sure about Eboue there because he lacks the extra. I do not believe Ray Parlour could cut a niche in the current squad so thus am unconvinced that Eboue can. Its is not a slight on him, I never moaned about him at right back. Actually thought he was great there but i can now also see the big pluses with Sagna. For the record I like Eboue, not even bothered he likes a roll. Just not convinced by full backs extending themselves to wingers, where their attacks are less of a surprise but a relied upon make up of our attacking play

  41. Muamba was better Sideshow, we would never get two for him

  42. ethan_gooner

Where are you? Still negative? Are you a Spur in disguise?

  43. Why Song is still given opportunities to make mistakes when he comes on baffles me. The guy is not good for us yet Arsene is still persisting with him. Why let Muamba go and keep Song? It’s just strange to understand.

  44. Told you those heart tablets would work ethan. BB not your Dad? Love the team love the manager love the Arsenal. Youth is wasted on the young.

  45. [...] Thursday, August 16th, 2007 in Blogroll Both Liverpool and Arsenal earned important victories away from home in the European Champions league qualifiers. Liverpool at Stade Muncipal, beat Toulouse 1-nil courtesy of a Andriey Voronin goal (sky sports match report). Meanwhile Arsenal on their away trip to to Sparta Prague, managed to secure a 2 nil win late into the game, with goals coming from Cesc Fabregas in the 72nd minute and Alexander Hleb in the 90th. (aculturedleftfoot.wordpress match report). [...]

  46. Song doesn’t seem to have the ability but he must have some thing. Why else would Wenger play him. I think he really feels the pressure when he comes on, theres no other reason for simple 5 yard passing mistakes. Once you make one mistake, your confidence is shot and spirrals from there.

I actually feel sorry for him because he’s still only young and clearly the supporters have got on his back which isn’t nice for any player and will only compound the pressure he feels when he does play.

If Diaby or Denilson were fit then Song proably wouldn’t of even travelled to Prague.

    Danny,

I agree with you on Eboue.

  47. Time will tell with Eboue at RM, Danny & JJ.

I still think you will be pleasantly surprised. His interchangeable combination with Sagna will work well.

He needs some more composure but last night he gave a very disciplined performance for the team. No he did not do a lot going forwards but that was not his first responsibility in a game like that.

I would guess he is the fastest player on our books at the moment. He has pace & can put over a good cross.

    Just give him time.

As for Song, why can’t you lot just accept that he won’t be a regular for 2/3 more years, if at all, & appreciate he does his best as about 5th choice in his position.

  48. me and yogi had a barney last night .. so i was going to stay quiet for a while .. but as you all would rather talk about me than the football .. I thought id come here to entertain you all.

as for matt i wasnt crying last night infact if you listened to me in earlier posts, ive always rated arsenal to get atleast to the group stages .. no supprises we seem still on track .. but do remember weve played our worst games at the emirates , and sitting back on defence and resting players like yogi suggests could be our undoing !

old timer i dont need any of your heart tablets ..
i know you always take them just before posting your bloggs
but please TOO MUCH INFROMATION ..ALSO just dont confuse viagra for them … it could be embarrising on public transport.

as for flint boy .. get a BACH.ARCH after your name then you
can call me less educated ! but i see your point , you pretty much blurt out everything that the tinted brigade vomits onto there bloggs ,so by me having a differing opinion im an easy target .. NOT !

Cecilia do you change your name every second day on this blog? do i know you ?
have we met in some seedy pub before ? was i drunk ??
NO i hate spurs ,but on paper they have the best team they have ever produced ,so i would be VERY quiet about them .. mouthing off to much like old timer, frank, matt, flint and the tinted brigade, might allow karma to catch up !
    ALSO
im not negative – im objective and dont agree with most of you!! FULL STOP ! .. WE HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED YET !

did we play against RM?- barcalona ? liverpool ? chelsea?
man ure?? NO ! … so until the time comes you can throw
parties as much as you want and hire wind machines to blow AIR up your own backsides .. but the truth is
we have an inexperienced squad , and very light on quality
personnel .song?.. and have not replaced key players just in the PURE HOPE that our youth squad grows up enough to push for a title birth … NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME !!!
And with so many other clubs emulating chelsea and getting in quality players to compete i can see us loosing ground, like we have done for the past 3 years ..
(isnt that enough proof for you optamists?)
IT MUST STOP and your all too blind to see it ..
so keep hoping , keep breathing (except old timer ) you can use your bed side oxygen tanks , because once the real tests start happening against this team , youll all be sounding like me … infact after last nights preformance in the 1st half , its happening already .. CL football and EPL are 2 differing styles of game .. we play the 1st style far better than the 2nd ! our boys need more gym work and 2 or 3 years on them before you can start holding your FORCED AIR parties .. but buying 1 or 2 CHOICE players might get us further !!!

  49. Last few games (incl pre-season) we seem to be scoring a goal a game more than we probably would have in comparable situations last season. This bodes very well, so fingers crossed.

Enjoyed Alan Hansen’s comment on MOTD last night: “History shows that it’s always a mistake to think Spurs will do well.” :)

  50. old timer your wasted on something !!

  51. easy win for them

but i still cant see them winning the title

  52. I’m with flint, I think Eboue will come through and surprise a few people. its a matter of time.

  53. Pretty amazing that France doesn’t have room for Gael in their squad…

  54. Flint,

I cannot rule out his ability to surprise me, It’s happened before particularly with Wenger players. Also there is no question of myself needing to give him time because I am not the type to constantly barrack a player on the net or at the ground for that matter.

Simply put, I like flair players for wingers, Pires being case in point. Though in fairness not an out and out winger. Players like this bring a bit extra, touch, control, vision, skills. They play the game on another plane, but in Eboue’s case there are always roles in teams for the less sparkling players, but with the ability to still make an impact and often a tremendous work ethic. Ray Parlour being case in point.

So he still may find a role on the flank and surprise me, it’s just as a full-back, you could say he has flair. As a winger, he may have to become workmanlike.

I also still think when Eduardo comes back, Eboue will be the man to make way. With Rosicky and Hleb returning to former roles, if not though on different wings than previously employed.

Either way, i do see this as a slight imbalance, but as is the case you only need someone to find their niche. When in the past we have had such dazzling left sides with Henry, Pires and previously Overmars plying their trades, we have still had an effective right side, though a tad less kind on the eye with the likes of Parlour, Ljungberg and Wiltord. So in essence he only needs to do a job for us there. I just prefer the fellas on the left side.

  55. I can wait ’til Domenech gets his clutches into Gael and over-uses him in pointless friendlies.

Re Eboue – wasn’t he a midfielder until Arsene converted him to right back because of Lauren’s injury? Why shouldn’t he do well there once he settles into his new role? He has had very little match experience on the right of midfield so I think he should be given time before being dismissed as a winger.

  56. pass ,
dont you think with the money left over from all our other sales
of players this season we should actually BUY a 1st team professional player .. an EXPERIENCED player in that area ? ! why not SPLURGE ! …. as i still say sagna is this years purchase.. eboue made way.. freddies gone .. LETS REPLACE HIM with a winger who plays on both flanks .. a REAL WINGER .
and a TOP MARKSMAN ! to cover up front ! game 2 of the season and we have 5 players out for varying reasons ..
If no one can see we need more cover then you all are truely
    in need of glasses !

  57. No Ethan, I don’t think we should ’splurge’ just for the sake of it.

If there is a player we need who will make a difference the boss will buy. But if he has personnel already at the club who know the Arsenal way and have shown promise, why not try to use them?

Any new player is an unknown quantity. Will they settle quickly, how will they impact on team spirit etc etc. That is what I would expect a top quality manager to do. This is what Arsene Wenger does.

Ask Martin Jol about splurging and what that gets you.

  58. Depends what you mean by Splurging

RB called Sagna at 7m is good business
RB called Alves at 25m is madness

Who is the better RB, and which is Splurging?

I agree we Definately need a Winger and I still believe that behind the scenes this is being dealt with.

I Personally would like another Striker, I worry that we only have 4 and Wenger has stated one of those is not ready yet. We could use Walcott though so I will not be overly concerned if dont get one.

Probably best solution is Robinho as he could fill both roles. I think this depends on Robben though.

We will all know on 1st September!!!!!

  59. i do not think a couple of 10m players is a splurge in todays market especially considering our transfer activities net income added to the saved salaries since January.

clearly new players can not be gauranteed successes (we have had our own share of mistakes) but i think you would be hard pushed to argue that a malouda, ribery, babel, anelka, martins, pederson etc would not improve our squad.

it is not as if wenger has never taken any risks in the transfer market, walcott and reyes comes to mind. all of the above mentioned players would have been less of a risk than those two. you could also argue $8m on eduardo (who has never played in the big leagues) is a bigger risk than any of those above.

  60. This blog is so much fun to read…comparing to other blogs where they just provide links to news reports, tabloid rumors and goal clips. Keep up the good work Yogi’s warrior.

  61. I’m not sure it is a question of risks, simply whether Wenger can find the right man at what he would consider to be a reasonable price. Personally if it was going to be one of Anelka, Martins or Pedersen, I would sooner just leave it. If the boss can find a wide player who carries a goal threat and obviously of immense quality we would all be happy. Lets face it, it’s a rare day when a signing strolls in and you’re actually disappointed.

The Robinho idea may gather steam with each Real Madrid transfer manuveure, but I still cannot really see it and from another perspective, I am not sure I fancy helping Real Madrid balance out their dealings for a consecutive summer!

So one more signing, would be welcomed but I do not subscribe to the idea that it is any way crucial. I have total faith in the bosses ability to find solutions, whatever form they come in.

Any player that did come in, would have to fit in character. The most pleasing element thus far, is the unity the young team is displaying. The mood at the moment is just right, with young hunger and ambition. The personality would need be able to understand and immediately fit into the current team spirit. Right now, it is that determination and willingness to fight for each other that comes a clear first. Where there are slight imbalances in the squad, the team spirit could not be more in tune.

  62. i think wenger’s aversion to big name signings may also be the fact that he has not been that successful with them over the years. his greatest successes TH aside have been the cheap less established players, anelka, toure, fab, vieira, rvp, freddie, clichy, while the bigger purchases, ie wiltord, jeffers, reyes, walcott (so far), helb, rosicky, van bronkhurst, richard wright have been less successful.

  63. You are aware Dan that Theo cost no more than 6 million at point of purchase and Reyes was along the lines of 8 million again with rising add-ons. Arsenal as a club have always been a bit canny in the transfer market and have never really joined in with the high brow big spenders.

Would hardly list Wright and Gio as times when Wenger has gone out on a limb in terms of money spent. Our deals for all our signings are always riduculously structured, so paper quotes for transfers paid are always inflated far beyond the actual. In reality, the club have never been the type to just give money away. I see your point but it does not mention Henry and next to those players he was hardly cheap. Nor I suppose Overmars.

  64. Anybody knows what is going on with Ade ? It all started with a pb due to training in the heat in Austria and he was supposed to be back for the premiership…apparently he is now out for sunday where he would be much needed ! it will soon add up to 4 weeks…

  65. the point i was making was that wenger agreed to 12m for walcott and 17m for reyes, how ever it gets to that figure i am not sure is relevant. nearly all deals now have add ons etc and is rarely the straight cash at the beginning.
you can not have it both ways as i am sure all of chelsea’ liverpools etc deals are structured the same and you and others say that they over pay for everyone. the point is he thought they were worth that money and both were huge gambles for untried players, in fact the walcott one seems beyond belief in retrospect.

as for TH i did include him in the expensive ones as i said “TH aside”

Van Bronkorst was $7m and wright almost the same and for 5 years ago that was seen as pretty exensive and would certainly equate to a deal today of around 12m. if memory serves me right we spent about 6m on inamoto as well at the time!!!!

  66. I disagree that we need a winger or another striker. Our problem as others have said is defending from midfield. Hleb, rosicky and Cesc are variations of the same player, all would like to play central and advanced, and not great at defending, including positional sense. The defence are good athletes and players but are exposed by the midfield. Cesc is not a replacement for Vieira. Arsene makes the mistake of trying to play them all. We need a partner for Gilberto just like Manu or Edu was for Patrick. That would free Cesc or the others to roam. I thought Diaby was the solution but he’s either injured or played wide. Also, if we buy another striker will Bendtner or even Eduardo get enough chances to play and develop.

  67. danny, i believe juventus still owe us money fom the vieira deal!!!!! and we were all so impressed at how much we sold him for.

  68. Memory does not! Inamoto was no more than 2m and there was fun to have on shirt deals and of course the add ons are relevant. We never paid 17 million for Reyes, so it has not worked out but been a costly venture. Do believe it was about 6mill for Gio and Wright around 5mill but you are wrong to say that it was expensive for the time because there was a boom at the time and silly deals far larger than those were going on.

You can ignore all these things, but that is calculating risk. The structured deals we make are far tighter than the big spenders around us.

Dan you only have to look at net spending over the course of the last ten years to see that we do not do business like Leeds, Spurs and obviously the likes of Manchester United. If you go prior to Wenger, there was a short spell of business when Bergkamp was signed but under Graham it was much the same. When the Blackburn’s and United were going big on Cole and Shearer and the likes we were going small on the likes of McGoldrick, Kiwomya and Helder.

  69. Perhaps I am reading this wrong but my impression of the team so far is that they are a team, simply put they are playing for each other creating chances for each other and now the midfielad is starting to produce the goals which were lacking last season. If in this mix our strikers, who with notable exceptions have been missing from the field due to injuries enter into the mix; then comments like spend ,(although an option as the manager has said) will fade into the background. Players such as Eboue will shine, he is a class act, lets not write him off just yet. Every member of the team will have his good days and poor days but the overall picture (IMO) is they are playing as a team. If you run around like a headless chicken grabbing at this player that player no matter how good they are they can become stranded and from past experience disenchanted and their performance and the teams performance falls. The boss has reiterated on many many occassions the fighting spriit of the team, I as a humble schoolboy footballer bow to his better judgement.
ethan; tsk tsk tsk, go wash your mouth out suggesting I need Viagra. I told your mother not to send you to that school. Thats what happens when your Dad leaves those naughty books around.

  70. Before you start ethan a past schoolboy footballer.

  71. http://www.japan-zone.com/modern/inamoto_junichi.shtml

according to this inamoto was 4m.

  72. old timer, football is all about opinions and in mine eboue is no where near being ” a class act” quite the contrary, he is a defender who has very little defending ability, loses concentration and gives the ball away too regularly. the way he conducts himself on the pitch is a disgrace to himself and arsenal football club and when we see the likes of ronaldo and drogba do it we rightly call the scumbags.

i love the look of sagna who does look like a class act, through his ability and the way he seems to conduct himself. I am very comfortable with hoyte as a back up.

Eboue is clearly not a right midfielder although he can do some sort of job there. i would be very glad if we sold him got decent money for him and purchased a real right midfielder with that money. i very much doubt any other top club uin england or europe would have someone of his limited ability playing right midfield and hopefully we will not for too much longer!!!!!

  73. Wenger obviously also was not overly impressed with eboue or he wouldn’t have bought sagna and made him first choice right back straight away.

My guess is that by keeping hoyte as well wenger will phase out eboue completely from defence.
Once it becomes obvious that he is not a right midfielder, which shouldn’t také long i think he will be out full stop. Hopefully!!

  74. Dan-

Why don’t you hope Eboue becomes an outstanding RM even in your eyes?

Have you actually seen him at close quarters? I have regularly & he posseses a lot of assets. I agree there is certainly some room for improvement, particularly concentration & the ‘mambe pambieness’.

I would also remind you that he played a major part in the CL clean sheet run we had.

  75. “BACH.ARCH”

My sister-in-law is one of those. She lacks people skills too!

  76. that chapiuons league run was also shared by flamini and senderos but they are also fairly average players. as for eboue he is an ok RB but i really do not think he is a RM, he doesn’t have the footballing brain, attacking ability, scoring ability. come on flint don’t deny you would rather see a proper RM than a RB who is being put there becuase he just lose his place at RB.

  77. I can agree with you on one point his lack of control over his emotions does concern me; but of late that has eased somewhat. Nevertheless I still think he has the ability to succeed as a RM. I think it would be a big mistake to sell him and feel sure if AW was of the same opinion the young man would be sitting more on the bench than lining up as a first team player. But as you say we will see what happens over the coming days. At the moment I’m wrapped, two games two wins, long may it remain that way.

  78. on this blog all we say is how great the way aresnal do things and eboue does not stand up for the values we stand for. i am no moral preacher but i really think he is a slimy cheating git and and i said in my opinion not that great a player to make all his crap worthwhile.

  79. What is this talk of Pederson from Blackburn. He is a lazy player and not an Arsenal player. I would not want him in our side.

  80. [...] Prague-matic Approach Wins Through Sparta Prague 0 Arsenal 2 Fabregas 72, Hleb 90 Something that was missing might be making a return […] [...]

  81. dan no one wants a dirty player but I do think your terms of referring to Eboue as a slimy cheating git is a bit over the top. We are playing in a league which contains the evil sisters etc so sometimes we do have to play fire with fire. I think all forwards do at times try to milk a penalty, and the art of rolling over many many times getting up and running the full length of the pitch is not new. I do believe the boss does insist that players play the Arsenal way, and those that don’t are reminded what is expected. As for Senderos, I have reservations but I am not yet quiet ready to give up on. In the pre games he performed well and although not a first team member a handy backup. We cant always have a team with Ces ability, we have been very lucky so far. When we were down to two LB Flamini fill that role well, he gives his heart to the team and is also handy as a backup. I go back to my main point the Boss has his hands on the pulse and in him I trust.

  82. Well put, Old Timer. I read about Scolari screaming at one of his players last World Cup for getting up to quickly after a perfectly legal tackle brought the player down. In other words, some coaches teach their teams to milk it. And although it does happen, diving doesn’t seem to be endemic in Arsenal.
