So it has arrived. The opening game of the 2007-08 Premiership season. The kids have been suitably traumatised by some ‘Quality Time’ with their old Dad in the Summer, probably very grateful that the season has started.
So to the match. Hard to really read much into it beforehand with no form as such to go on. However, given that I always want and believe that the team will win every single game (don’t take any prediction at face value, they are always cautious; more goals are always expected, one league placing higher, etc., you get the drift) and in all honesty today ought to be a comfortable win. It would be good to see an open game but I suspect Fulham will make life difficult by massing ranks in the midfield.
I have not seen anything to the contrary so presume Eduardo passed his fitness test yesterday. If that is correct, the Arsenal team that I would like to see start is a 4-4-2 formation. I see no reason for caution in that respect on the opening day, at home, to a team who flirted with relegation last season. My starting line up would be:
Lehmann; Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy; Eboue, Fabregas, Flamini, Rosicky; RvP, Eduardo
with a bench of
Almunia, Senderos, Denilson, Walcott, Bendtner
I would omit Hleb, keeping him ready for a 4-5-1 formation in Prague on Wednesday night. Let’s not forget he proved susceptible to the odd strain last season so given that we need a good result there, better to ensure his fitness rather than risk it. Hopefully, we can get to, say, a three goal lead by the hour or so mark which would enable the replacement of RvP, Rosicky and Eduardo with Denilson, Walcott and Bendtner to give them an thirty minute runout but expect it not to be that way, for football rarely is.
Arsene meanwhile has now outright set a deadline on the completion of his contract negotiations, wanting them resolved by the end of August because,
I do not want that to be a handicap for the success of the team…I do not want my players to find these kind of excuses. I have a responsibility towards the fans, the players, the club. I have worked here for 10 years, and I want to stand up for that. I know that it is something important
The setting of a deadline surprised me, especially as it is a complete volte-face from the laid back attitude of the start of the Summer. Interestingly, there appears to be a reason as to why it will take a little longer, “sometimes the lawyers are on holiday“. It is however a damn fine way to start to the League season, a nice little boost to the start of the day – if one were needed – to know that both sides are eager as little Beavers to get this done and dusted.
Meanwhile the boss gave the media a little bit of fodder to throw back at the Club when talking of Cesc’s future,
I did not allow Fabregas to talk to anybody. He denies that he spoke to Real Madrid. So if you can get the statement that he’s done that and that Real Madrid, more than ever, has done that we will sue Real Madrid
It brought a weary sigh when I first read it because it is something you know that is going to be turned into a headline, “Fab Stabs Wenger In The Back” or some other witticism; it almost made me wonder why he said it. Hey, ho. Wenger has been given a double page spread which is curiously enough very similar to the interview carried on Arsenal.com but what do expect from a paper that makes a huge song and dance about a health scare, only to find there hasn’t been one and it all stems from the fact that he is doing one and a half jobs at the Club. The difference between the two is that Wenger has commented about the influence of Henry last season,
It is very difficult to analyse that we lost a world-class player. We will be different now. When there is a massive personality like that, sometimes it’s a bit scary for the players. But they can now show how strong they can be when they have a less stronger personality around them.
Which reflects the positive impact of his departure that most expect there to be in this seasons dressing room, dare one say, a better team spirit. It makes me laugh when I read some of the so-called pundits giving their views on the team. According to Tony Cascarino in yesterdays’ Sun, we struggled to score with Henry in the team so he has no idea how we will score this season. That’s the point; when the forwards were fit last season, we did not struggle to score. When we were left with Baptista and Aliadiere, we did. Still, never let a fact get in the way of an opinion.
Tomas Rosicky reckons that he will be given hell on Wednesday,
I am expecting a bad reaction from the supporters. Some of them were unhappy when I left. It will be a hard game for me – but we have no reason to worry about them on the pitch
The paper also says we are giving a trial to Honduran Wilson Palacios (seriously, you couldn’t make it up) and keeping tabs on Yoan Gouffran (as if that is news). The People reckons that we are set to swoop for Artur Boruc and the old chestnut of Morten Gaamst Pedersen rears his ugly little head again.
Enjoy your day wherever you are catching the game. ’til Tomorrow.

“According to Tony Cascarino in yesterdays’ Sun, we struggled to score with Henry in the team so he has no idea how we will score this season.”
Pretty sure that was the times, YW! (football ‘guide’ pullout)
Glad to hear you are so confident about the result. I would tend to agree with the 11 but not sure I understand why you dont want to take a risk with Hleb, who has no injury, but are prepared to take one with Eduardo, who, potenially, has one. I only say this because I still feel that Baptista was really hindered by his injury at the start of last year; the last thing we need is for Eduardo to do something similar; while I would love to see him play today, I would also want to see some caution too…
anyways, bring on Northern Ire…! whoops, Wimbel…! sorry, Fulham!

Hey fellow gooners! would just like to say that i am confident in this arsenal side that Wenger has given us and that they will surprise everyone who said that they will fail, we will beat fulham today quite comfortably i think.
Go gunners and theres no way those c*&#! from Shite Hart lane are gonna finish above us.
And i heard that we are going to offer 8mil for Modric, hope that deal goes through as a winger is needed!
Have a great day Gooners!

Two reasons. Firstly Eduardo had a minor knock nothing like the problem Baptista had but secondly, Helb is far more important to a 4-5-1 (or seemed to be) with Wednesday being important to the season it is early on to expect players to be up for two games in three days.

He isn’t in the squad for this weekend’s match and there is no injury news on him on the official site. Could be that Arsene is ’saving’ him for the CL Qualifier on Wednesday.

Great to talk about the actual football YW.
I agree with your team except I expect Hleb to play for either Rosicky or Dudu, & maybe Denilson for Flamini.
Whilst it is possible to make up points at this stage of the season a good start is really essential, so I don’t see anyone being held back for Sparta.
We will play our strongest available side, based on pre season form/training, & do the same on Wednesday, when hopefully Ade will be fit.

I don’t care which XI we’ll see play. They’re all good. (My optimism talking again.) I just want to get 3 points in our pocket, with no horrow show at the back – CLEAN SHEET! So 2:0 or above would really make my day.
For the 2nd striker, the pecking order seems to me like Eduardo (fitness permitting) > Hleb > Bendtner > Walcott > Rosicky (for fitness reasons)

Guys
For those unfortunate enough to live too far away to go to the game, it is on Star Sports which you can watch on the internet
Download Sopcast and install it
Then go to
http://www.myp2p.eu/Matches/Match1.htm
and click on the sopcast link and it will open the app
If you do this, start the app early (Mine is on now) as it takes a while to settle, picture is very watchable

Grimandi reports….
————————————————————————-
“Before, Arsene was snowed under with work. Now it has become frightening. He is taking on a large part of Dein’s work and the situation is getting difficult,” he told The News of the World.
“All of us around Arsene are trying to take the strain off him but Dein is irreplaceable…
—————————————————————————
well lets hope he signs soon , and also AGAIN the ETHAN GOONER WAS RIGHT
‘I do not want that to be a handicap for the success of the team’
hmmm.., think i said something like this OVER 2 months ago
Its not his fault ‘he’s french’, it probly does take longer for them to think about ones own actions..
Also we have been linked with Luka Modric
with the amount of speculation starting to rear its ugly head , it sounds like the arsenal scouts are on the rampage. So im hopefully of another signing or 2 ..
it may very well be that chevz’s have gave us the middle finger with regards to diarra . So we are on the hunt AGAIN
i personally think it will be a 1-5-4 formation with da silva on the bench .. rvp upfront and HLEB included .. into the 5 man mid-feild. dudu on the bench and comming in at 70 minute mark . 1-0 or 2-0 or possibly a 2-1 all in our favour.

Not Bad
I got one wrong in the starting line up, I thought Walcott would start instead of Eboue
GK Lehmann
LB Clichy
CB Toure
CB Gallas
RB Sagna
LW Rosicky
CM Cesc
CM Flamini
RW Eboue
AM Hleb
FW VP
3-0 to the Arsenal I think
Lets just hope VP11 does not get injured

1-0 Fulham at half time
you could easily fall into saying same as last year but to be honest there goal was a gift so I will leave that until full time, we do need to score soon though otherwise they will be in danger of falling back into that bad habit
We do look different though, Hleb is relishing his favoured position and should have scored late on (Great Save) and Rosicky seems more happy to have a crack from outside the box, Sagna and Eboue have linked well but we are still over passing a bit though. Fulham have had a few chances and probably should have had a penalty late on although that probably evens up the Hleb one (Lawrie Sanchez was having kittens for about 10 mins after tosser)
Warner is stopping everything, It could be one of those days!!!

remember baptista last season . .
wenger in the 1st game probly would of went with a proven striker in the EPL to start the season+ a 5 man midfeild to dominate the park , i cant even watch the game the blasted cable guy didnt turn up yesterday.. its frustrating , but so far its as i predicted(same old arsenal).. lets just hope for a second half thats better than the 1st… 2-1 is still the only score still left in my prediction , but i thought it would have been a consolation goal not a TAKE THE LEAD goal !

Phew
It is 3 points and a hard-earnt 3 points, I really thought it was going to be West Ham all over gain
Hleb was easily MOM for me, he worked his socks off,
I was seriously worried though and that is not good, we created enough chances to have easily put that one to bed but a mixture of poor finishing and quality goalkeeping kept us out
We are still guilty of over-passing but for me it was an improvement of last season
I wont say it is same as last season as a crazy error put us in that situation, hope they dont continue
By: Patthegooner on August 12, 2007

I thought it was a similar game to the Villa game last year. it looked all the world like we would at very best draw that but we managed to force the win. Up to the penalty I was not overly impressed with our play in the final third. It was very reminiscent of last season.
perhaps the Hleb to forward makes a difference though he scored his goal when he should have been on the left wing!
I will have to give that game some more thought before commenting. just to say Lehmann is a liability and I have no time for him but I have not liked him for 2 years. his kicking has always been poor and these days its one of the key parts of a keepers game. Get Almunia or Fabi in now i say.

id say it was close enough to last years preformances . it is hard to judge a single game .. but with ade out and dudu out before the season has even started i think it is just madness not to actually get a striker -midfeilder and a defender even… of proven quality .. it was a struggle and thanks pat for directing me to sopcast.. i did see the final 20 minutes and they did better it sounds in those minutes than the other 70 .. i hate yens
he is a complaining german cry baby .. with a attitude that can only damage arsenals chances .. plus he is too casual in the way he feeds the ball nowadays… hes scarey quite frankly ..
By: ethan_gooner on August 12, 2007
at 2:14 pm
Yeah Jens was quite scary… sometimes yeah he did seem casual with some of the passes and it cost us this time. It’s kind of unfair to put the burden/pressure on the outfield players to score right starting from the 1st minute of the game like that… But well, I just hope/think Almunia and Fabianski will keep pushing for his place and get him to work harder.
By: Louisa on August 12, 2007

As I was atching the game all those not to distant memories of Man City (away) Csk Moscow West Ham (home) came rushing back. But thankfully the players rallied around each other and earned a much needed win

What were you guys thinking during those 80 mins when we’re 1-0 down? The thought of getting to the bottom of the table among bastards like Spurs, Bolton and West Ham did cross my mind… I was almost sweating! >_<
With the same 2-1 scoreline, Liverpool was not really playing well and it took Steven Gerrard’s stunning FK to win the game, also in the last minute. But we (bar Jens) played way way way better for a start.
Credit to Fulham though, their defence was really solid, especially Warner and Knight. And yet we put the frustrations aside and kept attacking. That’s a good sign too.
By: Louisa on August 12, 2007

Bendtner was immense physically. But I am really starting to get disappointed in Theo. I have never seen the Boss so animated at the touchline. I think he too realizes this season is like judgement day both for him as well as for his players

Chelsea 3-2 Birmingham. It was 2-2 at half time and I was hoping Djourou could help us take points off Chelsea. But Chelsea didn’t look very sharp, either. He he heee…
So yeah, Liverpool weren’t sharp, Chelsea aren’t sharp, Spurs were crap, now in the relegation zone where they belong. We weren’t sharp either but looked much better in creating chances (what’s new). Just that the defence is still a concern.

By: Louisa on August 12, 2007

Next Sunday is the Blackburn game
We do need a winger, Eboue was ok today and linked well with Sagna but it is the left wing that worries me, Rosicky did not do a lot and I am sure he would rather of been playing Hlebs position.
Quaresma is being linked with a move to the Premiership again and I hope we pursue it. The problem would be with Chelski though, if they are in the bidding for him we wouldnt stand a chance.
Having taking a breather after the game, I also think we need another Striker. Bendtner is not ready yet and with Dudu and Ade injured we had limited resources on the bench. everytime VP11 got clattered I was concerned, Anelka or Martins would do me although Huntelaar would be spot on……wont happen though.
By: Patthegooner on August 12, 2007
at 3:08 pm
100% agreed, Pat. But in fairness, Rosicky’s not back in form yet. And I think it’s time we admit he’s not a winger, but a No. 10, really. Yeah I’ve been hoping for Hunterlaar too, but you’re right, it’s not going to happen. So a winger and a striker would be great. But I think the former’s more likely, if Wenger would open his cheque book at all, than the latter as he’s famously succeeded in converting people into wingers in the past, e.g. Pires and Freddie weren’t wingers before they came, or so I heard. Fingers crossed.

I’m watching the Chelsea-Birmingham match now. Amazing how some of the better players of the match are produced from the successful Arsenal Youth Academy. Djourou’s pretty solid and unfazed despite strong opponents, Seb Larsson and Muamba are lively and strong, Sidwell looks capable but just lacks a bit of sharpness and Cole only came in as a sub.
By: Louisa on August 12, 2007
at 3:23 pm
Quaresma is 20 million plus and definetly not worth it. unfortunately theo is not coming to life. when we have players back he may not even be on the bench unless he makes dramatic improvement.
I think Diably Denilson were rested so as to be ready fro Sparta game.
Djouru will come straight into side when he comes back and Toure goes to ANC.
We should have got Malouda for 13 million
By: solgooner on August 12, 2007
at 3:23 pm
Chelsea have struggled too, they won 3-2 but I am sure that their fans probably expected a 3 or 4-0 scoreline.
So far I have watched 4 of the supposed top 5 and to be honest I think we have played the best. I say again I think if it wasnt for Jens error we would have killed that game off by half time, so despite my pre-season pesimism I am not going to jump on the same old Arsenal bus based on that. I think we were drawing those games last year so for me I am happy but not ecstatic.
I was impressed with Liverpool’s depth though what a player to bring on in Babel, he was excellent and it is a shame we did not pursue him.
Chelski did what they always do, grind a result out even if not on top form
The spuds were awful for me, it is all very well having four top strikers but I forgot how woeful their midfield was especially without Lennon, and because of that they could not create anything. I wonder whether Martin Jol is putting some pressure on himself, they have a tough game against Everton next.
So now Man Ure and I am looking forward to this one, again I am sure their fans are expecting a 3/4 -0 so lets see
one last thought, I think we should drop Jens for that and give Almunia a go, that is the final straw for me with him and I am pleased this is his last season. he is so frustrating he can be World Class one day and the next he is doing that…what an idiot.
By: Patthegooner on August 12, 2007

jens days are numbered , he knows it .. at some point this season i think he will be dropped/ rested probly for almunia .
almunia is 1 hell of a shot stopper .. but not sure his game is well rounded off enough to be an arsenal no. 1 keeper .. we should have sold jens 2 years ago and picked up buffon when juve was religated and fined .. he’s still only 28-29 now and probly got years left in him !!!
i agree with Louisa , wenger needs to spend the 15 mil . he made on players instead of making a bank role for the board !
if he doesnt spend the guestimated sum of 15 mil . I will have to agree with the term selling club .. as i cannot see the need
to turn smart business into a stupid one !WE NEED TO BE COMPEDITIVE 1st and foremost… we barely scraped thru against fulham .. and regardless of the tinted brigade trying to find positives from the game, again the oposition scored 1st .. again we went into 1/2 time behind .. and we played a sloppy 1st half.. reading every report of the game it must be said everyone who saw the game thought we were lucky to get 3 points ..

Sorry, nothing new from me either, I agree with most of you guys : It’s last season all over again. I can not see that we have improved at all (except for Hleb, who was MoM, and he has improved because AW finally plays him wher he belongs).
Eboue hasnt got the skills to be a RW, neither does Theo. Tomas on LW is not ideal and we dont have any predators to put the ball in the net. The defence plays dangerousley and will give away a lot of crappy goals. SO generally : Same old story as last year.

Well we got out of jail there. Just about deserved the win in the end.
I was at the game so I haven’t seen any of the penalty incidents again. The 1 we got looked pretty clear cut but what about their claim just before half time?
Our problem today I thought revolved around Cesc’s lack of sharpness, so Hleb & Flamini did well in the circumstances. Cesc is so key to the rythm of our play.
Big plus was Bentner, & to a lesser extent Theo, making a difference, when they came on. Bentner provides something that we have not had in years, a forward who is genuinely good in the air & with an eye for goal.
Overall not a great performance, 1st games are often like that, but enough spirit to win in the end. Just about satisfactory.

These early starts never seem to be good for the team and they were definitely slow to get started today, which was not helped by Jens’ gift to Fulham. He must be the most relieved man at Emirates today!
The way I saw it there seemed to be a few first game jitters, but the positives are that the defence were pretty solid. They dealt with corners well even though Fulham have some good headers of the ball. The other positive is the never say die spirit. The team did not get frustrated and kept pressing for a goal to the bitter end. The result was just reward for their efforts. I don’t mind that it was not classic Arsenal, this team have shown that they can win ugly even when they are not at their fluent best. These are positives to build on.

didnt watch so rely on match reports
same old same old
now I watched Bayern yday and Ribery was awesome ..again
I found Liverpool very good in 1st half as well and Torres is a sharp guy who will get his fair share of goals
Chelsea created quite a bit .. dont think we would have snatched that game..again they scored 2 minutes after Forsell opened for Birmingham ..so you can say same old same old for them as well
btw apart from Djourou clearing on the line, he was poor especially his very erratic distribution created problems for his colleagues
if AW persists with his stubbornness and does not add a striker of any quality or reputation, I am afraid the season will unfold as last one .. all the signs are there
look at 2day’s team sheet and who on earth are we expecting to bang the goals in?
no Dudu nor Ade and already we suffer the indignity of beıng led for 82 mins
now irrespetive of ManU-Reading, ManU has upfront Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Tevez .. please compare this to ours
why on earth are we not buying a winger and also I must say I would love to see Anelka coming back .. he is very sharp and would get us the goals .. great shot/1st touch/speed .. what we need
a winger would also take pressure of Fabregas when he has one of his weaker games as seems to have been the case 2day
we are predictable and as such, we will get caught out more than once
I hate to sound pessimistic, but to be rosy now after having escaped with a blue eye is not advisable
please AW strengthen your side and sign a contract
leave that German stingyness aside and spend .. feel free .. its not your money.. and also.. sack your fellow German cousin Lehmann

Chill, guys! Apart from Mad Jens, I think everyone else gave 100% in this game. Even Rosicky, who’s not on good form, ran a lot, stretched defence and tried some shots which went pretty close too. And Bendtner seemed more ready than Theo to step up to the plate when we had 2 strikers ruled out.
Ade can’t make the CL qualifier and Eduardo is “50-50″ (according to Arsene on arsenal.com). So the Wed formation might look like this, with backups in ():
Mad Jens (Almunia) (Or swap their positions?)
Sagna Kolo (Senderos) Captain Gallas Clichy
Eboue (Theo) Cesc (Denilson) Diaby (Flamini) Rosicky
Hleb
RvP
PS: I had RvP, Hleb, Cesc, Eboue and Clichy in this week’s Fantasy Football… he he he… A friend said I could pick someone playing 2 games in this week to maximise points but I insisted to have as many as 5 Arsenal players in my 11. So yeah, sometimes you just have to get behind your guys.

Yes – we could finish anywhere between 1st – 20th.
It would be foolish to judge anything until 10 or so games have been played.

wow….the doom mongers have had a field day today. Etan “i told you the world would end” has had a stormer! Calm down, not a wonderful display but thus far no club is in a position to get too excited. Once again though, we have displayed great character and while penalties are generally a given, that was big, big one for Van Persie. Yes he has the mantle and yes he can handle the pressure. Good lad! He was a bit isolated today, Wenger is going have to tinker with that for Wednesday and I am still concerned with the idea of a right back playing as a winger but there you go. The season has started now, so Pat, Ethan just relax a little, accept Wenger has not read all your blogs and made all your suggested signings, get behind the team and actually enjoy the fact the season has finally started and we have begun our campaign with three points. Oh and Van Persie is off the mark. It’s not all got to be rosy as you like to say, but cheer bloody up!

did look similar to last season but we needed Ade and Dudu really to judge where we are going. Gilberto might make a difference as well. Otherwise expect a lot of what we saw last season. I have not seen a great deal of improvement in front of goal from cesc or Rosicky. Hleb on the other hand has made a step forward. Bendtner looks the business I think. he creates havoc in the final third a bit like Ade. Defenders hate tall busy players.
the penalty decisions. Hleb was tripped in the first half and it was a 100% stick on penalty. the ref got that one wrong. the reading one, it was hard to tell whether cesc had just touched the reading players heel or whether he’d tripped himself up. for certain cesc did nothing intentional and was not even trying to do a tackle, it was an accident at worst and for me not a penalty. the Toure penalty was also a definite pen. it was inside the box and the reading defender moved across to block Toure so it cant simply be obstruction.

Hey Danny
I am on your side today and believe me I am 110% behind whoever plays, if you read my reports above I was quite happy with it, of the top 5 (Having now watched Man Ure) I think we look the sharpest and you can’t base the ’same old Arsenal’ comment on todays performance. It was a freak goal and we had to chase all the way through.
With another keeper in their net we would have put the game to bed way before panic started to kick in on the hour. If we hadn’t of won then yes I would have grave concerns but I think the spirit shown today was outstanding. We would have lost or drawn that game last year and for me thats improvement
I still maintain that we will not come above 3rd unless we buy a Striker and a Winger and again today would have been a lot easier with them. If we had bought a Malouda, or a Ribery or Babel then it would have at least been an option given that Rosicky is still a bit of the pace. It was interesting to read Flint’s comments on Bendtner, i did not see much of him on the TV but I guess seeing his movement live at the game may be different.
If you want to see doom go and read the in-match comments on Gunnerblog, if they were all in the same room there would be a punch up

Anyone seen Sanchez’s comments after the game, what a bad loser.
He claims all of our Penalty claims were simulation, how Toure running into a brick wall (Ok Fulham Player that jumped in his way) is simulation is beyond me, and Hleb in the first half is as clear a Penalty as I have seen.
Maybe he should watch the incidents first before making a idiotic comment.
He also thinks their appeal (Which was 50/50 for me) was a definate Penalty. I always thought he was a bit of a dick
He also thinks they were good value for their lead!!!!

Yeah, that guy’s comments were unfair when he hadn’t even watched the incidents again. And this blogger’s right in saying that he should apologise:
http://www.insidearsenal.co.uk/?p=794
And Arsene’s fair enough to say that he’d watch the videos though it seemed to him that Hleb was tripped in the box and Hleb also told him he didn’t “dive.” That’s what we call class. He even went on to say he’s for using video to giving retrospective red cards:
http://football.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/feedstory/0,,-6844790,00.html
On the only potentially arguable case on the Fulham side, where Healy entered the box and fell while Cesc was chasing. But the slow-motion showed that there wasn’t any contact and the guy just lost his balance himself! Shut up Sanchez!

he was pretty cheeky before the game as well Pat, ruling us out the title race.
pretty sure it’s not for him to say. should have kept his mouth shut.
Andy Gray has just been saying he expects us to challenge.
By: danny on August 12, 2007

Just watching the analysis of the weekend games by Andy Gray and he said that Arsenal will mount a title challenge – unlike messieurs Hansan and Lawrenson. He said anybody who thought that Arsenal were not a good team last season were bonkers, and in his post match analysis of the Arsenal game he was categorical that Hleb had a penalty in the 1st half, and was very complimentary about Arsenals play, which seems contrary to a lot of the comments in this forum.
By: Phil on August 12, 2007
at 7:05 pm
Phil, because what Andy Gray says is true! Hleb and Kolo were both tripped/blocked in the box. Seemed to us definite penalties at the time and in slo-mo replays.
And how dared they push our players around when we wanted to go back to play after RvP scoring the equaliser! For all his heroics, Warner was time-wasting and holding the ball up. What a bunch of time-wasters since the 1st minute when they went 1-0 up.
This Sanchez bastard has to shut up and watch the damn videos before opening his month again (to apologise).
And yeah, don’t pretend to be a big gun in the prem when you’re only months into the job by saying we got no chances blah blah blah with the press. Jerk.
By: Louisa on August 12, 2007

Even as a player Lawrie Sanchez never had any class. As a manager he was even worse. Now that he is at Fulham and got a little of money to spend, he start to believe his own little hype.
He is making Fulham, a team with an ethos to play a new wimbledon, only worse to watch. Hoofing the ball and try to mick a goal with David Healy worked for NI, but in the long run I do not think that he will work for Fulham. His team lost and deservedly so. They started to time waste as soon as they took the lead. 1 minute into the game !!!
As now shown by Sky the initial pass over the top that lead to Arsenal goal was to a player offside. Andy Gray may say that it is good for a change to see the advantage given to a forward. But the problem is that he was offside by a meter, not just on the same line. Mind you Lehman did make a pig ear of it.
Regarding the penalty, the law of the game are that now in the penalty box any minor deliberate foul including obstruction must be punished by a penalty. It was a clear cut penalty.
I watched the game live on French TV, in the first half Arsenal had two clear cut penalty turn down.
Regarding his appeal, again on French TV, it was shown that Fabregas tugged on the player outside of the penalty box. He then let go. The player then tripped on his own foot. At best it is foul way outside the box. At worst he could also be punished for dissent because he appealed for a penalty when he knew that he tripped himself. Unless you are completely uncoordinated if you trip yourself you must feel your own feet.
Fabregas had a very poor game and bar three luminuous passes (including Hleb goal) and one interception did nothing all afternoon. He still looks like under the kosh with a virus.
Rosicky did not complete the whole pre-season training and it showed. Maybe the mid-week game was on his mind, but he was ineffectual.
Eboue was poor, and Walcott who replaced him was even worse. He is quick, but sometime he should look up and try to pass.
Bentdner was trying too hard, but he was causing them problem with his physical approach to the game. Zat Knight did not get a single header out of him. All his knowck-down were troubling Fulham.
What is clear is that because of his selfishness, he is not completely trusted by his team-mates.
By the way it was announced that Diaby and Denilson were injured, (Song replaced on the teamsheet). Diaby may make the team mid-week but Denilson is unlikely to do so.
On the TV, they also said that Van Persie and Flamini are best of mates and Van Persie may be the one who convince Flamini to stay. They do extra practice together, Van Persie to better his right foot and Flamini to better his left foot.

I think Sanchez should be asked to explain his comments
if he said something about the Ref he would have to. If I were Hleb or Toure I would be pretty annoyed by his comments
for those who have not seen them
“I was at the same Premier League meeting with Arsene Wenger and (referees’ chief) Keith Hackett last Tuesday, and it was agreed that simulation was going to be a big no-no this year,” Sanchez said.
“Yet here there were three simulations that went unpunished. That gives people the impression they can get away with it and it didn’t surprise me when the penalty was given.
“It’s a bit harsh, as a small club coming here to a big stadium and not getting those decisions.”
I am pleased Andy Gray took a look at each incident in slo mo and it proves his comments are rude and blantently wrong
Maybe he should look more at our 19 shots to their 12, their 19 fouls and 5 Yellow cards to our 6 and 1 card. or maybe our 14 Corners to their 4 and probably the most conclusive stat
Arsenal 2 Fulham 1
and if it wasnt for Warner it probably would have been 4 or 5 -1

Thanks Valentin, this is illuminating. Now with these injuries, I’m a bit worried about the Wed game. Hope Arsene would see more of a need to get some new bodies in.

Interesting points there Valentine.
Do you know if the Spurs away game is scheduled to be shown in France & if so where would I be likely to see it?
Pat – there is a lot you don’t see on the TV? That is why I get so pissed of with some of the criticism.
The advantage of tv is that you are not sure of some of the incidents & tv can often clear them up.
I was sitting right behind Sanchez & he was at the 4th official from start to finish. He must have made a 1000 diving motions at him.
Fulham actually looked a decent side & had a couple more chances.
To be fair to Jens, it was his 1st touch, a complete aberration, but ‘cut him some slack’ he did well after that.

The last time that Wenger categorically deny that he was going to bring somebody else was two weeks before he brought Reyes.
He is just saying that to avoid being gazumped and also to instill confidence in the team.
I believe that he is still searching for a left winger. I suspect that is a player playing in the Bundesliga. Wenger sended some scouts over there who normally look at players in France.

I’m starting to see a bit of our team last year in ManU. Painful draw against Reading. Sir cursed missed chances. Lost a striker in Rooney through a fracture in his left foot now. Tevez not fit to play yet. Saha still struggling. Had to play John O’Shea as an emergency striker in the second half as Solskjaer wasn’t even on the bench. Oh, and Hahnemann did great as well. Sounds familiar huh? The only difference is that we had Gilberto to equaliser when their bore draw ended 0-0. Oh well.

Fulham got an early lucky goal…like the small timers they are despite wasting a good few quid this summer…they followed their early stroke of good fortune by sitting and hoping. What followed was penalty shout followed by keeper save and some useful defending. When justice was finally done, they rolled over to give us the three points, which we earnt through grit, endeavour and stamina. So Sanchez need only look at himself and ask why when investing a small fortune he did so on limited hard working players from a nation that hardly have ripped any trees up. This is not random international but the Premiership and frankly Chris Coleman is far better manager. See you at the Cottage for more of the same Sanchez….that’s if you’ve still gotta job.

No team played really well, Birmingham were let down by their goalkeeper. The two early goals he let in were that bad. I’ll prefer Bendtner to Ade; Bendtner gives us plan B and his finishing is better than Ade. Don’t know when Rosicky will improve on his finishing, any time he gets a chance he misses and it was the same last year. Bendtner should’ve come on earlier for Hleb to move to the left. It’s earl days yet so let’s keep our fingers crossed, MANU just drew and Pool had luck too.

If Arsene is going to buy Modric, it will have to happen before the CL 3rd quarlifer because he he plays for his club, that means he will no longer be able to play for us. What do you think?
By: Ken on August 12, 2007
at 10:06 pm
Can’t see it Ken. If they were going to tear their own club apart would they not have rather done it earlier on in a double transfer giving them more time recover and themselves look for purchases. Just when their fans have begun to come to terms with the loss of Eduardo, they sell Modric. Be a bit like us now selling Fabregas. I think Wenger will look at today and be quite happy with Eduardo, Ade, Bert and Diaby still to come. The shipping out of Djourou shows that he wants to see these youngsters come to the fore and he is not about to block their paths.

danny and all other no need to call me doom monger..
i just deal in facts … im not an optamist .. i see what i see , and so far i see a team that wont hold 4th spot ..
we havnt got the depth in the squad , even game 1 and we had to play 1-5-4 due to lack of strikers .. i understood where yogi was comming from .. ATTACK fulham with a 4-4-2 .. but i knew dudu was suspect about playing and wenger wouldnt risk it too boot .. dominate the midfeild (which we didnt do especially in the 1/2 half) and play rvp upfront .. same old arsenal .. sorry ..
but no one improves that much in an off season .. sure we had great games last season Vs liverpool and manc’s we got the better of .. but inconsistancy almost reared its ugly head again
yesterday . And that is the thing that hasnt changed .. and too be fair in pre season we looked the same against lesser competion as last season .. one or 2 fresh faces of quality is needed .. or we wont go the distance ..
