Captaincy, Diarra And Theo & RvP Get All Loved Up

Relegated to a footnote on the bottom the page, Gilberto has been ‘officially’ named as Arsenal Captain for the second time this summer, with Kolo Toure and William Gallas sharing vice-captaincy duties, whatever that entails. There won’t be many, if any, complaints about that choice. Indeed I don’t think I would be going out a limb to say that a fair few would be happy with the Anyone But Gallas element of the decision.

I say it was ‘officially’ announced, it was in The Sun Says So It Must Be True. Right after their ‘breaking news’ that Arsene is going to ‘test Chelsea’s resolve’ with a £5m bid for Lassana Diarra. This means that in the fortnight since the rumour first surfaced, his price has increased by 150% from £2m. Apparently, Chelsea ‘dare not’ refuse this or else he is going to leave next summer on a free. As if they are worried about £5m! More likely is that they will sell him to Middlesbrough, Reading or Portsmouth rather than strengthen Arsene’s hand but we shall see.

Robin van Persie has been in chatty mode for the past couple of weeks. This time he is ‘bigging up‘ Theo Walcott and his professional attitude in this Summer past, returning to training early with the Dutchman as they both recovered from injury,

When we were doing tests over the summer it was very hard…I could see it in his face he was really going for it. I like Theo has a person. He is a young man but I think he has big, big ambitions for himself to show his qualities. His ambition is one of the biggest things about him. He is just 18 but I see in him a big, big desire achieve his goals.

Just about the only thing RvP did not say was something along the lines of ‘I see a lot of myself in him‘. It is perhaps this season that we will see the real Walcott, freed from the shackles of his shoulder injury.

Like one or two others, he has been touted as being on his last chance – seriously – by some supporters. I just do not ‘get’ it. It is both a good and bad time to be a young player at the Club. Good because they know they will get a chance but also a time for caution as there are a minority who will judge the players on an exceptionally small number of appearances, forsaking those who do live up to idealistic and unreasonably applied standards. Nearly twenty years ago, David Hillier broke into the first team. God alone knows what would be made of him now by The Great And The Good. He showed some promise and was given the benefit of the doubt despite apparent limitations. He was given a chance. Too frequently now, careers are dismissed by the Sages of the Message Boards in an instant.

Walcott has been brought along in the usual cautious manner by Arsene, ensuring that he is not overplayed at this point in his development. It is hard to see what people want from him? It seems that some expect miracles, goals galore from the lad. I doubt that will happen from right or left wing. He has set his target on double figures, I hope he reaches it but I would be very happy if he chipped with five League goals from the fifteen or so starts that he is likely to get. I can see him playing when AW believes he will ‘make hay’ against a lesser defence. More likely to feature from the start at home I suspect, where Eboue’s defensive instincts will not be so readily required. It would not surprise me to see him start on Sunday against Fulham, if fit, with Eboue filling the wide right berth in Prague next week

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. The stories about Diarra are quite amusing. Like you say, why would Chelsea care about £5million – especially when they’re looking to line up a £24million bid for Daniel Alves!

As for Walcott v Eboue against Fulham, I personally hope Eboue starts both. He’s looked a little sharper than Theo so far in pre-season and deserves a start – just needs to stop diving around like a fool.

  2. spanish fry dont really agree with what ya saying. first of all u say why would chelsea be worried about 5 million for diarra. well i remember them saying they wasnt gonna give us gallas last summer and they did. the players clearly unhappy with the rest of the chavs and knows that wenger will give him a chance. we dont know if he has a clause in his contract if anyone offers so much he can leave. i think the deal will go through but without chelsea liking it. else they will get nothing for him next summer.
and dont like the way u slagged off eboue “diving like a fool” come on no need to be that strong…..give the guy a break theres enough diving going on in other teams. i dont like it but how we gonna stop it. just be a bit kinder in ya words for our players.

  3. I like Diarra and the squad lacks a proper Gilberto type back up. Denilson, Diaby, Flamini are quite attack minded and Diarra could fill the holding role if Gilberto was to be injured for example.

But when would Diarra get a game at Arsenal? Carling and FA Cup? He might as well stay at Chelsea.

Unless Flamini and Song are set to leave the club, which is highly doubtful, then this will remain idle speculation.

  4. Diarra is on his way. It is official!

  5. Yogi – I like your term for the quick judgment brigade: the great and the good. “Last Chance” expectations on Theo are idiotic, to say nothing of the fact that all judgments will be silently taken back once he does start knocking them in regularly. A couple of points: Theo was a latecomer to football, wasn’t he? He’s only been seriously concentrating on football for 6 or 7 years (??? Or is it a bit more???). To give this some contrast, I saw a biography of Rooney in a cheap and crap bookshop (reduced to $2.95 Aus) and there’s photos of him as sperm kicking a ball against the walls of his dad’s bollocks. Rooney was football from day one, and is only football, Theo is still becoming football – he’ll get there. Secondly, Theo is really serving an apprenticeship on the right wing, where he is having to grow as a player in entirely new ways. He and the team will reap the rewards of this later on, but for now, he is still learning. Give him time! Would you give your child a “last chance” to learn his times table because he wasn’t Einstein at 7?

  6. please sign a winger…please

  7. PaulO
How official is this news of Diarra coming over?

  8. Who else thinks that, given the current injury streak at chelsea and the superpopulation of central midfielders in arsenal, Diarra has more chances of first team football at the bridge than at the grove?

  9. spanish fry, i agree what u say about eboue. i hate it when he dives, he dramatizes it as well. we arsenal fans are true fans of beautiful football. look at manure fans, they always deny that cronaldo dives. i believe this is walcott’s year.

  10. pls sign a left winger 2 provide 4 da Silva goals

  11. why do we need diara…not at this time…we can easily wait for a year…i think arsene is just teasing chelsea…I dont think defensive midfileder is that much of priority…but u never know even right back was not..instead of left back..we got right back..instead of winger we may get defensive midfileder…ONLY ARSENE KNOWS AND IN HIM WE TRUST COMPLETELY…

  12. Tina, I must agree with “Spanish Fry”. Yes his words were “harsh” if you say. But he does make a very important point, however onerous his words. I go onto a lot of message boards and many Man Utd fans don’t really care if C. Ronaldo dives or not. Defending him in most cases. The same is with Robben of Chelsea. But what I have found, to my delight, is that most if not all Arsenal fans will not tolerate our players diving. It should be shunned from the game and the only way is to frown upon it. By, criticising. No one likes diving. But many don’t care if its their players doing it. Arsenal, are the exception.

  13. Young Theo reminds me of a certain Dennis Rommendahl, great pace but not much else! I do not think Theo will make it on the wing, as for the forward positions I just don’t see how…Bendtner looks a great prospect and should be ahead of Theo….anyone who has watched Carlos Vela will tell you his abilities are about 300% those of Theo….but who knows, Theo might actually make it!

  14. With the glare of television constantly on players long before they reach the first team as both club and national youth tournaments are routinely shown on one of the sports channels players have a ‘career’ before they reach the business end of the professional level. This encourages people to big up players like Vela, Merida, Barazite and others before they have been through the normal development of making mistakes and learning their craft. In order to win the backing of some supporters it becomes just as necessary for them to win their tournaments and put in a good performance as the first team. It has always been the case that failure teaches you much more than success. Without the opportunity to make the mistakes and fail without your career being written off or expectations raised too early we may lose valuable players that otherwise would have gone on to develop naturally.

  15. kiki, walcott also has great touch and a terrific right foot. Don’t compare him to Rommedahl.. Frankly once he develops more confidence in one on one situations and a bit more tactical awareness there will be few defenders who’ll be able to stop him.

  16. I really don’t believe the Diarra rumours, I haven’t heard Wenger say anything and why would we need him when we have Flammini, Song and Denilson? get rid of Song and I’ll have him.

Also we have many youngsters coming through like Merida and signing Diarra would cause selection problems so I can’t see it.

As for Theo, does anybody remember the goals he’s scored against Germany in the under 21’s and against Chelsea? he’s a natural finisher in the Thierry/Dennis mould, he’s 18 for goodness sake.

I think Theo will be one of the all time greats and Wenger is playing him out of position to get his all round game better, another year he’ll bulk up, then we’ll see what he’s capable of, look at Joe Cole and Theo’s twice the player he was at 18.

We do however need a left winger.

  17. Good point Amos.

It is absurd that we have these pressures & instant judgements on developing players.

Hillier wasn’t actually a bad player. It was just that the midfield of him Selley & Morrow made them all look bad. They were all reasonable players in a good team but together, a good team they did not make.

  18. The reason the players love Arsene is that he will give them a chance and allow them to fail in order to learn and develop. It’s a shame a few more fans aren’t like that. Theo’s problem is that he is ‘the great English hope’ at Arsenal and some people’s expectations of him are ridiculously high. Arsene spotted the potential of Walcott but knew that at Southampton he would be overplayed and rely on his speed to get by. At Arsenal he is learning all the techniques out on the wing, that will reap dividends when he moves to the front. I think Wenger is absolutely right with the way he is developing Theo and other youngsters. He sees them in training and knows their strengths and weaknesses, he also knows when they are ready to take on more responsibility. Allow him to do his job and allow the players time to show us what they can do.

  19. I agree with Geoff,

Walcott has shown enough in the past (U21’s & the CC Final) to show he has great finishing ability.

Allhe lacks at the moment is the confidence to try different things and the tactical awareness that comes with age and expirience.

I look forward to the day in a couple of seasons time when we have the best english striker around….

Lets see what you all say then.

Yogi makes a very good point in his column – there are too many fans out there who expect players of 17 years of age to be world beaters the moment they put on the shirt.

    Unrealistic…

Have patience, and good things will happen.

  20. The criticisms or lack of faith in Theo are all very shallow. We seem to have a lot of fans posting, who either hype the youngsters before seeing any actual game time or having seen the odd 90 minutes make ruthless, ridiculous judgements of a player. In the short-term this is great fun but hardly befitting of taking a supportive, patient stance. Some of the guys seem to have covered this point. What these usually alarmist type fans fail to ever realise, is the process or metamorphesis these players go through. Especially in the presence of our great boss. Henry needed time to emerge as footballing stallion and while Theo appears closer to bambi at times, this is all part of the process. What a credit to Theo and the boss, that they are not simply throwing him on up front for 20 minutes every now and then. He would have surely scored more goals and maybe had a bigger impact but instead Theo is being forced to develop one on one skills and a greater all round awareness. Fans need to be patient and themselves be aware that Wenger and Theo are working to a long term objective. Early into last season, Theo was coming on and testing opposition full backs, later on possibly carrying his shoulder injury he was slighty less effective. This season the boss looks like he is planning to start him more often in league games. Theo is becoming more of a complete player, lets save complete judement untill he is 21.

  21. when fit Theo looks 10 times the player as to when he’s not fit. clearly he is another one that needs to avoid serious injuries, but he has already picked up a slight injury in pre season along with Rosicky. These things do not bode well. I hope they are nothing serious or chronic anyway.
theo will develop his game in much the same way as Henry did. no one really rated Henry at 18 despite his pace. Henry developed all his skills to beat players from playing on the wing and that is what theo is learning now. Wenger is trying to give him other weapons other than pace. theo is probably still a year away from a more regular place in the team. As Yogi suggests I still expect him to be exposed slowly to the premiership, injuries permitting.

really great to see gilberto is captain, was getting worried there for a moment. not sure who would take the captain role if he is not playing, I would have a guess that it would be Gallas rather than Toure.

cant work out this Diarra story. it has been running for a long time and thats too much smoke for there to be no fire. wenger is probably relaxed about it since he has Gilberto but wants to get under Mourinhos skin. Diarra will not sign for portsmouth or Boro, he wants to play CL football. CFC dont want him to go for free, so might just be trying to squeeze us for a few million. Wenger might take that since leaving Diarra at the chavs could lead to him playing a lot of games there this season and then singing a new deal there. Once he comes here he will feel he can sell Gilberto next summer at 31. for me though Gilberto is getting better and better with age. question is, how long can he go on?

  22. Emmanuel Eboue does not have “defensive instincts”.

  23. It seems to me that a lot of sites make this a make or break season for a number of players. I agree that it is an important season, but again patience is key. We haven’t had the best couple of seasons but we have been terribly unlucky with injuries. Think about Chelsea without Drogba, or ManU without Ronaldo for most of the season. Unless Arsene is losing his footballing acumen (which I gravely doubt), he knows what we need, and will do his very best to get it. Theo has a lifetime ahead of him – he obviously has pace and skills – the rest may or may not come. Arsenal is the best place to find out.

  24. crafty bison – Ronaldo and Robinho might disagree with you there. When he puts his mind to it he can keep the best wingers quiet.

  25. Ignore Paul0…I’ve come across his input before and he’s blatantly just trying to stir things up. Last time it was official that Ribery and Malouda were on their way. Funny guy!

  26. Unless I see or hear evidence then i dont beleive anything to do with football rumours.
Bloody quiet at the moment. never known it quite like this before.

  27. Eboue has far more pace..stamina..dribbling ability..crossing and even finishing ability than theo..i will put him ahead of theo as right wing potential…

Did anyone understand why Erickson took him to worldcup…going by that judgement i think man city are in big hole..trust them along with fulham and derby county to go down..what say?

  28. YW

Theo last chance? He just recovered from shoulder surgery and played well in pre-season against Barnet and Gernglibir (that Turkish team), got injured during pre-season training in Austria. He performed poorly against Lazio apparently because he’s just returned from injury and so was Rosicky and you say last chance. Last chance for a lad who’s actually 18 years and just learning his trade? What about Song and others who’ve been given tons of chances and still not performing and yet in the team? Too much expectation from fans but give him time, Theo will definitely make it. His peers have confidence in him. Listen to RVP on Theo.

  29. Henry, Eto and Ronaldinho played for the first time yesterday on Barca’s Asian tour, it was a bit of a disaster apparantly. The Catalan press are already on Henry’s back about his performances and heralding the young Mexican Giovani Dos Santos instead.

I was at the charity shield on sunday and apart from the agro between the supporters was left generally unimpressed by both Chelsea and Man Utd I think this season could be a lot more competitive with a few teams not just two or four having a go at it. And to be quite frank it’s what the premiership needs.

  30. Eriksson maintained that he had taken Theo to the World Cup , mainly so he could get the experience, since he didn’t feel there were any other English strikers worth taking beyond Crouch, Rooney and Owen.

I understood his point but then couldn’t understand why he didn’t stick him on against Sweden anyway after Owen got injured, in a game we didn’t need to win

  31. Cecilia

You’ve misread the piece. I was commenting on others who were saying it was his last chance, and how I do not understand their mentality, not that I thought it was his last chance.

Eboue has better finishing ability than Theo? Don’t believe it. Just watch Arsenal/Inter Milan pre-season and you’ll see sitters he missed and roll back to Arsenal/Spurs at White Hart Lane and check the misses there too. I’ll try and compare the two though I’m not technically good in terms of football.

    Speed-Theo is faster than Eboue.
    Power-Eboue is far ahead
Ball possession-Eboue better, Theo still learning
One to one with defenders-Eboue better
    Finishing-Theo is a better finisher

So you can see where Theo needs to improve. He has// to use the gym to improve physic and power. He also needs to improve on his ball possession and dribbling abilities and he’ll become a complete player. Both of them hug the wing and both are better playing at the right wing than Hleb. So Eboue is ahead of Theo on the right mid. RM should be shared by the two, Eboue on top. Eboue should work on his finishing. His poor finishing is understandable for now as he’s been a defender for a long time. He has to change his attitude too, confrontation with match officials and in some cases dramatising tacklings.

  33. Easy Tiger – Sven wouldn’t've taken Theo if Arsene hadn’t told him to. Sven knows that Arsene is, unlike him, a genius, so he did as he was told.

  34. Guys lets get real even if Chelsea were going to get rid of Diarra they most certainly are not going to sell him to us one of their closest rivals. The only way is if there is a clause in his contract allowing him to go for a sum or we have him on a free at the end of the season. I dont think with their injuries they are even going to consider parting with him before the deadline and as someone has already mentioned they are not too bothered about the odd couple of million they might lose. If indeed Arsene is interested its more likely it will be next season as i dont think we need him at the present as he is no better than the players we have already. If Arsene is going to buy and it is looking increasingly likely that he wont it would surely be a wide man as we look thin on the left wing rather than central midfield.

  35. No way, we have Keiran Gibbs, no need for a left winger. Only joking that would be the one area of the squad I think we should address for the start of the season, though it does appear to be Rosicky’s established position these days. So do we buy someone who will play there instead of him, or someone who can provide cover for him?

  36. Gilberto is vice captain, Gallas is captain.. check arsenal site!

  37. Could it be a clever ruse by Arsene to get the best out of Gallas?

At least it has had a short term effect – the recent noises from Gallas are much more of what we expect from him.

Now we need the performances that made us think we got the better of the deal with Cole…..

  38. Clever line by matt, i too think that Gallas has been made skipper by AW to keep him on his toes, he may now use his mouth to good effect, plus he now has to stand up and be counted. Which at least off field and against Ajax he did.
As for transfer rumours, I was once told to only believe a player has signed or is to sign when you see him grinning like buffoon and holding up a shirt for the press, until then I never pay any attention to it, Check those expensive phone sites who are always telling us that WORLD CUP WINNER jets in, which sounds mouth watering, until you suss out that its November and the transfer window is closed, and its way of drumming up trade. When it appears on the official web site, its official.
As for Theo, I think he s great, he needs a few injury free games, league rather than in a changed league cup tie team, to see him at his best.

  39. Theo will kick butt this year i said it 6 weeks ago . and ill say it again for those who doubt him !

one things for sure youll see some stars rise from the ranks .
as weve already lost most of our current stars,so arsene will just make some more to sell this season. lets just hope we dont loose our CL spot in the process !

  40. This is good for Arsenal, the right man for the job … Expect arsenal to do big things this year

ohh and if you want come join my football forum – http://www.insearchoffootball.frbb.net

  41. Personally, I am a bit dissapointed with Gallas as captain.
I think there is a bit more to it than what Wenger is saying. Gallas has just not done enough to deserve the honour. I cannot help but feel Gilberto and Kolo will be dissapointed with the decision.
Kolo, may have lost out because of his commitment to the African Nations cup. Gilberto more than anyone else has the respect of all the other players.

  42. Surprised it’s not Gilberto, and hope it doesn’t get him down. Being captain seemed to fire him up and bring out the best.

On the plus side, Gallas seems the most hungry to win trophies, which can only be good.

Also Toure misses critical games with the ACN, and Gilberto misses the all-important start of the season with his hols. So at least there should be continuity with Gallas.

Good move to give Kolo. Bert and Jens some captaining role as well, to make sure they all help lead the team.

Can’t help noticing it’s the third French captain in a row too. :)

Probably standing up and saying “I want to be captain” counts for something too.

  43. I cannot believe Arsene has made Gallas captain after his outburst a few weeks ago. I have wondered why Gallas’s attitude has changed the last couple of interviews, if you try and look between the lines it seems as though perhaps he was given the arm band to keep him happy, I sincerely hope im wrong in that but i cant help but think it. This is a big kick in the teeth for Gilberto whose own performances improved greatly with the added responsibility of captain last season. I am not at all happy with Gallas’s behaviour since joining us and whether he actually deserves this honour and i know there are many tens of thousand other Gooners who feel the same. Im Gutted!

  44. Gallas is the best choice for us now. He’s a fighter and that’s stuff we need at a time when the team is young and needs leadership with grit. Toure and Gilberto are too nice to offer us the toughness that we need at this time of Arsenal’s history. Go on Gallas and bring in the silverware.

  45. very good points about why he has made Gallas captain, torchwolf/william/matt. I just hope wenger explained it like that to Gilberto and Toure. I am sure he did since he has not made the decision until Gilberto got back and he could tell him face to face rather than Gilberto finding out in the papers last week or something.
Personally I dont like it, but we will see what it does for the team. I dont think Toure needed any further motivation but perhaps Gallas did and wenger will want to speak in french to his captain in a much closer relationship than he probably has with Gilberto. I dont think it had anything to do with gilberto missing the the first two games of the season though.

  46. Calm down Veteran – I heard Arsene was thinking about Hleb!

It is a surprise that Gilberto hasn’t got the job because he really took responsibility last season.

Maybe AW sees that there will be more rotation in midfield & the defence only being changed for injuries.

I think it possible that Kolo is doing enough without the added burden of captaincy.

Could be that Gallas was the 1 who really wanted it, who knows.

We are not in the dressing room so we just have to respect AW’s choice.

  47. could it be that he didn’t think Gilberto would be an automatic first choice this season?

  48. I think you are right Jimmy. I think it should be Alex Song.

  49. I’m with this one i’m afraid, spoke yesterday about Gallas running a well-timed election campaign and to be fair he may have just about reeled me in. Yes he likes a moan and agreed he is yet to reach grand footballing heights for ourselves but he does have a serious will to win. Bert did have great season or so in charge but did not really strike me as a genuine leader. I prefer the vocal types, those that refuse to be intimidated. Kolo looked another good candidate but maybe there were signs that he was still a little young for the job. We love him but does he really command the ear of the squad. He can at times look a little erratic, not in terms of his own display but when he is organising the backline. Gallas is a very experienced player and more importantly than may be realised, he was a big enough man to say he really wanted the job. He may not have the love of the fans but the players seem to respect him and pre-season he has looked the captain on the pitch. Henry and Bert led by performance. Paddy and Tony were leaders as well as performers. Billy may well have to raise his game but this young team need a genuine leader.

  50. Fliint i would prefer Hleb to Gallas! only joking lets hope Gallas makes a success of it, i just dont think he deserves it.

  51. we could have got geremi, who went to Geordie’s on a free. Same mold as diarra.

  52. I’m surprised but not disappointed. In fairness, he does have some qualities required. Just that he hasn’t earned it. But if AW says he can do the job, he can do the job. He sees the players day in, day out, and has the wisdom to judge.
Don’t want to make it a long comment. Here’s what I’ve written IMHO:
    http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-nEP52Yc9dLOrgx_UAEF3qfKTHg–?cq=1&p=148
Let me know if this makes sense to you.

  53. Do you know what really annoys me about this whole thing, aside from wasting time reading footnotes in soiled newspapers? It’s the fact that I’ve got to change tomorrow’s post again to re-incorporate my original point about Gallas and responsibility.

  54. we love you arsenal we do,we love you arsenal we do,we love you arsenal we do,come on arsenal we love you.in wenger we trust.

  55. The team have to get nasty to win things. Henry, Gilberto and Toure are just too nice. After we conceeded the goal against PSV it was Gallas who picked the ball up and ran to the halfway line with it despite it being a lost cause he wants to win.

  56. The big advantage that Gallas had over Gilberto is that he can see the whole field from CB. Also, perhaps as between Gallas and Toure, AW wants to set out who is to take charge in that partnership as they do seem to get a bit lost together at times.

  57. [...] Captaincy, Diarra And Theo & RvP Get All Loved Up Relegated to a footnote on the bottom the page, Gilberto has been ‘officially’ named as Arsenal Captain for […] [...]

  58. Cecilia and others who support Theo..I am ready to bet Eboue will score more goals this season than Theo..He could be second top midfield scorer after Rosicky..whom also I fancy..Eboue shooting abilities are good..i have seen him shoot few times to surprise of many ..as they dont expect right back to shoot..but few times it has directly gone to goal keepers..but this season he will find back of net more often…I also dont agree Theo has better dribbling abilities..Eboue has earned few penalties for us..why ..cause he was causing havoc in box and thats why fouled..hopefully with his new positionb he will stay up and shoot with more confidence…

Captaincy for Gallas is really surprising…cause apart from fan not loving him …i think even players mite not like him suspecting us..it cud just have been to gel him with others …cause arsene wud think his partnership with toure and getting best out of him is must for winning league..Arsene definitely rates him high else why wud he buy him for 15 Mil at age of 28…

  59. Gallas is captain of Arsenal? Fucking ridiculous. He is the great winner? He is the great fighter, the one who will fight hardest for a trophy? What the fuck are you smoking, he played a year for us and he didn’t fight or win shit, but only bitched and moaned while spending half the season out with “thigh strain”. This will probably go down as the worst decision of Wenger’s career, and it does not spell good things for the coming season.

It’s not enough to give someone a title, on the pitch they have to have moral authority to lead the team, that means they have to have everyone’s respect. Does Gallas have it, and can he keep it for the whole year?

Gutted about this, really makes my stomache turn. The bottom line is that it is an injustice. Of all the players on the team, Gallas is the one who has done the LEAST to earn the armband.
