Gallas Is Happy And Everyone’s Writing Arsenal Off

William Gallas has swallowed a happy pill, maybe that armband he has been wearing was swathed in drugs that have seeped into his skin. In yesterday’s Sunday People, the previously heard mantra of Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now has been replaced by Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Proving he’s actually a kitten rather than the Grizzly Bear With A Sore Head that most think of him, William commented on Arsene’s and the team’s future,

I don’t know what Wenger will do or if he will continue after this season. That will depend a lot on how things go but he is a man of commitment and he appears to be very integrated into everything that is happening at Arsenal on all levels. I don’t regret leaving Chelsea – I know that at Arsenal we have good things ahead of us. We have one of the best young squads in Europe and if they can take the next step we can be great once again

Whatever the drugs are, they should be made freely available for the supporters.

It seems the World and his wife are dismissing Arsenal’s chances this coming season. Dennis Rohmmedahl kicked it all off in the fallout from the Ajax match ruminating that

I think it will be really difficult for them this season. They have a few young players. . . still to compete at the high level. In Europe it will be even more difficult; they stand more chance in the Premiership. I think there will be bigger and stronger teams who will win the physical and technical [battles], and who will beat them

It appears that Dennis believes Ajax intimidated Arsenal, winning the physical battle. I must have been in The Twilight Zone when that happened because as I saw it, for large portions of the game, Ajax were played off the park, Arsenal gave as good as they got and more importantly, scored the only goal of the game.

As The Daily Telegraph put it, this is a man who spent ‘three largely undistinguished years in the Premiership’ and had enough time on the sidelines to be a decent judge of the top flight or so you would have thought. It seems however that he has lost his sense of reason or is it just a case of he lost on Saturday and just hates doing so, forgetting that dignity in defeat is as important as that in victory.

Not that Rohmmedahl is alone in that view. The weekend’s pre-season previews have all dismissed Arsenal’s chances of silverware this season, indeed most pundits believe that we are the only vunerable side in the top four, candidates for Tottenham (and bizarrely Newcastle) to overhaul and smash the Premiership cartel at the top. What makes some of the commentary wander into the twilight zone is that whilst Arsenal have rebuilt from within on the whole, a paltry £17m spent which most sides have equalled or beaten in one signing, of the players who have departed this Summer, only one could, hand on heart, have been classed as anything like a first team regular. You can see their point to some degree because that one was the Club’s record goalscorer but they have fallen into the hackneyed trap of dismissing players who are not considered Europe’s elite. The one advantage that Arsenal have, and it is a big advantage, is that we have a reasonably settled squad.  Bringing in a new Right Back barely disrupts a side, particularly if that player looks more positionally solid in the position than the current incumbents, whilst it seems largely forgotten that last season’s top scorer was not Thierry Henry. That is not to say that the opinions are invalid or even incorrect. When the fixtures first came out, I thought that we could finish second but would not win the title. It is still true, even with Henry’s departure, the best we should think about is second as supporters. The players won’t believe that because they want to win but to expect more this season is perhaps unrealistic on our part.

Those who seek to replace us have spent big money and brought in a number of players but it will take time for them to gel as a team. That may happen quickly but if Arsenal are being held hostage to history with the ‘You never win anything with kids‘ adage then the same is true about bringing in players in quantity in that teams with more than two new faces rarely function at their best immediately. Squad wise, it becomes even more important. One injury to an established player from previous seasons could see some take the field with anything up to five new players which upsets the balance of the eleven on the pitch.

Everyone is quick to dismiss Arsenal’s squad and to some degree you can understand this. Yet to do so is to ignore Wenger’s ability to bring in an unknown and turn them into a world-beater. A rare moment of sanity in the News of the World covered that point exactly. Yeah, I had to lie down as well. News of the World? Sanity? I still feel faint.

It is equally important that a top four spot is not taken for granted. Some believe that we have a divine right to the title. We have no divine right to anything. A title is earned; performances over thirty eight games show that which you have merited. It is now time for the players to earn their corn.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. you didn’t say anything in this peice

but you are still my new favourite

  2. Yes, i have read many previews and everyone had the opinion that Arsenal will struggle to finish in the top four. And the reason they are giving is that others are spending big. Will spending big bring in loads of points? In my opinion, not always.
As you said we have a pretty settled squad and we played most of the last season without Henry. Even though he left, we have two other options in Eduardo and Bendtner. Surely we”ll perform better.

  3. Great post YW.

With regard to Rohmmedahl’s comment my view is that Ajax, a very technical, physical side typical of many in Europe, tried to kick us off the park to a point that were it a competive match at least 4 of their players would have been sent off.

What would of happened is they would have got yellows early enough for them to have to lay off the kicking & petty flow stopping little fouls.

In that respect Ajax’s methods were disgraceful.

I love it that we are being written off.

  4. last season we were the best team in the middle of the park,we controlled games, dictated the pace, denied the ball to opponents. We killed off teams who didn’t fear us.so if anyone writes us off, it is to their peril. The best thing they can do is write us off!!Our defence will be better than last seasonwhere injuries made a stable back four hard.
This season will be diffrent IF our mid- fielders start adding their quota. Hopefully, fabregas continues from where he stopped last season.

  5. Well, Arsenal’s midfield was fundamentally flawed last year, and Wenger’s done nothing to improve it.

Rosicky and Hleb are still unlikely to deliver – and if moving Eboue forward is the best Wenger can manage, I’d not be at all surprised to see sides that have actually worked to plug their holes, rather than just sell off as many players as possible, beat them to fourth place.

At any other club, Wenger will be fired at the end of the season if you don’t make the Champions League – but I believe your tight-arse board must be loving his profitable transfer dealings, which must right now be making up for lack of prize money.

  6. Bendtner is too slow to play on the left. I think we need a natural left winger who has an eye for a goal and then we’re good to go.

  7. Jean

    Your answer contains your answer:

    >I’d not be at all surprised to see sides that have actually worked to plug their holes

They have more gaps to fill because their current incumbents are either injury-prone or not good enough. It takes time for a team to gel unless you have brought in players who are the top of the pile. Even that does not guarantee success – Shevchenko & Ballack are the prime example – and more importantly, of those who have come in, are they experienced in the rigours of the Premiership? In Arsenal’s case, the team may be young but his starting XI all have Premiership experience bar Sagna and Eduardo. And do not forget, the team finished a comfortable fourth without a recognised goalscorer for a third of the season.

  8. Who are these sad people who support other teams doing commenting an d reading Arsenal sites? Are they worried or just pathetic? No knowledge, no insight, no sense.

  9. If our midfield were fundamentally flawed how is that, second only to ManU, we had more shots on target and created more goal attempts than others last season ? I think it is your footballing judgement that is fundamentally flawed Jean. At any other club Wenger would be welcomed with open arms not fired.

If the pundits are right and that other teams below us have strengthened then that has to be better for our chances. The more open and competitive the competition is the more likely we are to get something out of it.

  10. Exactly my point yogi, we have a problem in the left wing no doubt but the fact is arsenal played the most of last season with its midfield (practically no strikeforce) but yet lost only about 6 premiership games either due to rough up tactics or the team had nothing to fight for(end of our season).Look at chelsea without drogba in the charity shield,i was drooling at the thought of that being Arsenal instead of Man-utd.Personally,the right wing wasn’t our problem last season most commentators agree we simply didnt TAKE OUR CHANCES we created hatfull of chances the same will happen with a drenthe, quaresma whatever.Scoring is the problem.strecht teams all you want you dont score you dont win simple. If our midfield can bring us 4th place surely a better strikeforce will give us the title?

  11. left wing sorry:)

  12. We DO have a devine right to win the title!

I dont know what planet you live on…!

  13. Yogi, Yogi, Yogi!!!!!

Wow, we can finish second but not first!! When such fine lines can decide who gains the winners trophy and who takes runner-up spot, this seems an unusual admission. The players have to believe and so do we!!! Simply put, because as supporters that is our role to play. While others will claim what we cannot do, we will claim what we can. If in pre-season we cannot be optimistic, if not full of faith when can we. I would understand it more if you said we would acheive fourth.

I understand there is hoping and expecting, these two are completely different but if you believe we can come second, why not first?

Do you really believe we can come second? Or do you fear worse?

  14. get rid of hoyte! he’s unbelievably average defensively for Arsenal standard and even wopse offensively. bring back gilbert!!

  15. Danny

We can finish second from top. For that to happen though we have to be more ruthless home and away from The Emirates. The theory goes that with Henry, players believed he could dig them out of a hole and either rescue a game or pull the rabbit out of the hat to win it with something spectacular.

With him now gone, they have to concentrate more defensively which will hopefully result in sloppy goals being conceded on a less frequent basis. If RvP continues in a goalscoring vein and chips in fifteen, Adebayor is capable of doing the same but midfield needs to stop flattering to deceive in front of goal and at least two of them have to hit double figures. Once you get four or five regular goalscorers who hit fifty or more goals between them, the rest of the team will chip in with twenty or so which is getting to the totals that genuine challengers score in a season.

The pre-season indicated that a lot of the above is falling into place although there were some iffy goals conceded but the portents remain positive for 2007-08 being a vast improvement on last season.

    YW

  16. good point Amos. If the premiership becomes stronger then I think arsenal’s chances improve for two reasons. firstly, we do really well against adventurous teams who like to play football and do less well against big physical teams who just want to kick us about, defend in numbers and nick a goal from a set piece. secondly, there will greater chance that other teams will start to beat our title rivals on a regular basis. that means it might only take 80 points to win the league. But I still think that a good 7 or 8 teams towards the bottom of the league will play the ugly way that we dont like. since Vieira left we have not really competed with those teams as we should do with all the talent we have at our disposal. If wenger can use team selection better e.g use diaby in those kinds of games, then we can overcome it.

even so a left winger is still required, not least because Rosicky will get injured and clichy is needed at left back. I think something will happen this week.

  17. Going by the community shield game not much has changed with either Chelski or ManU from last season. but it wasnt against these two that our season fell apart. It was against the weaker sides in the league that we let ourselves down. That is what needs to change if we are to have a go at winning the title. And from what i have seen over the last few preseason games is that we can grind out a result when we are not playing at our best. Count how many games the top 2 won when they were out of sorts and you will see the points difference. All the top 4 teams can be devastating on their day, its when they are up against it and have to dig deep for a win that the difference was seen last season. ManU and Chelski were able to win these games. Liverpool and The Arsenal were not.

  18. you cannot win the league if you have a flaw in the side. you need a flawless team, a bit of luck and few significant injuries to win the league these days. our 2 potential flaws are lack of goals from midfield (left?) and an average defence. both of these can improve this season and if they do then we have a chance. but it is a biggish IF.

  19. Yogi, I’me very positive. What i still do not understand is you believing we can finish second but not first.

If you predict we can force ourselves into a title race, then anything can happen. Mind-Games, Injuries, Suspensions, Swings in confidence, a team on the March, a massive victory in a titile decider, a massive loss in a title decider. These are the unscripted and anything goes. So the question is can we get ourselves into contention?

So i cannot understand the rationale behind saying we can finish second but not first!

If they challenge, they can finish first, anyone that gets into serious contention could finish first!

  20. Those 2 flaws you mention gazzap can be remedied without any signings(id still like to see a pacy winger) The back 4 should only get stronger. Individually they are all quality and it only needs games for them to gel, im sure of it. Rosicky, Hleb and Cesc will all feature more on the score sheet this season too. They simply have to as their returns wernt up to scratch last term and they know this. Add to this the goals im sure Eduardo will bring, either from the bench or from the start. The season opener is close now and im getting excited. Im always optimistic , and im sure this team can move on from last season. Whether that means a league title, im not sure, but a league title challenge , definately.

  21. Danny

First is too big a leap in one season, points wise, unless an awful lot goes in our favour.

Contrary to a lot of people, I don’t think the Premiership is more competitive. The same gaps are there between the top four and the rest. Perhaps Tottenham will bridge it but I cannot see anyone else having the necessary squad to do so. No-one has bought that well in the Summer.

There may be more competitiveness in the teams bunched in the middle but they always raise their games against the bigger clubs so what is new? The difference is how the top four handle them. I think Arsenal will handle them better than the last two seasons but probably not enough to win the title. That as I said months ago is probably 2008-09.

    YW

  22. Heaven help us if we beat PSG, INTER, LAZIO and AJAX and lose to birmingham, derby, sunderland and westham.
Give us lassana and lasagna they will be toxic to the spuds.

  23. I am with Danny here YW.

If you can finish 2nd you can also get that top position.

I would not predict anything because we know all sorts of things, eg injuries etc, have an effect on all teams.

With a fair wind & maybe 1 more new face, I know we have the ability to mount a serious challenge. Whether that will happen, who knows?

What I do know is that as the season starts it is always a time of hope & why not hope for the PL & CL?

It looks like 1 of my tips Bouazza of Watford is going to Fulham. I think he will be a really useful player in a good team.

  24. I donot see that before starting season … Arsenal is off from Championship …………. as the team they are proving in preseason game.

In my point of view if Arsene adds 2-3 player like Goal scorrer .. , Midlefiled defender , one left foot player they will defently champion … other wise the minium i expect is second rank with 4-5-1 formation.

All the best for Gunner ……………

  25. I struggle to think if any of the usual hacks ever give us a chance pre season (Alan Smith and Ian Ridley excepted) they must have a rolling double or quits bet, most of them seem to be Man U , West Ham or Newcastle supporters. Jean such bitterness, now I wonder what team you might support!!
Ajax had clearly been watching the Mark Hughes how to beat Arsenal DVD which is such a shame as they have generally been a skillful outfit with gifted players.
Although it was encouraging to see the team coping well and getting on with game despite the bullying, how the hell has that ref been allowed to reach international level ?
A tough pre season unlike some other potential top 4 teams just a matter of keeping the momentem, at 12/1 even some of the critics will have a punt.

  26. 21 points is a big gap to bridge and as Yogi says a lot has to go our way to be able to do it. It has been done before though. A team 23 points behind the winners on 67 points in 87-88 went on to win the title in the following season 88-89. The team of course was Arsenal.

  27. Nice header!

  28. Yes Bouazza would have been a good buy. he was a stand out player for Watford. lightning fast and can cross a ball as well as anyone in the premiership. plus he is well capable of scoring goals. very cheap too.

  29. All Arsenal needs to do to be competitive is tighten up at the back. Last year we scored three or four goals less than Chelsea but conceded a lot lot more. Clearly, if we can defend better and score early, we might even shock all the pundits who have written us off. I can see us scoring early against all those midtable teams if in the 4-4-2 set up we were to play Ade and RVP upfront with DUDU on attacking left midfield. Still, it would be a good idea for AW to get someone who can play on the left midfield slot the way Eboue does on the right. If that happens, it is easy to see that we might well be 1st or 2nd.

I saw the Community Shield yesterday and for me what comes through is the obvious lack of creative midfielders at Chelsea. Which leads me to conclude that Chelsea is unlikely to win the EPL unless they have a strong solid performance from their defence.

  30. Wasnt Bouazza on our books and we sent him packing ? Or am i thinking of someone else ?

  31. I’m glad we’re being written off.

Success will just taste all that much sweeter and defeat for the others will be so much more bitter.

Besides; I think I’m gonna enjoy supporting the “underdogs” this season! :)

  32. Now all we need is Adrian Dick-head Durham on Talk Shite to write us off completely, syainf we are in crisis and we will win the league. He said the same both times at the bigining of both of our last 2 championship winning seasons!!

  33. er, Paulo Vernazza?

  34. Yogi, I agree with everything you say regarding the competitiveness of other teams.

But i cannot understand how we can finish second but therefore cannot finish first.

If we were not talking about Arsenal and you said that team X could finish second but not first it would still not make sense. Unless all of the other contenders were really poor. Like the SPL, but it would still not really make sense there. Maybe the former Bundesliga, when Bayern would dominate, maybe then some clubs might believe they could not topple them.

But in our league, if you can finish above Chelsea for example, why not believe you can finish above United?

  35. everyone beleives united will win the title, but we beat them twice last season. It seems to me we have a bit more bottle about us this time round so we have to win those horrible away games like Everton, Derby, Sunderland, Newcastle, West Ham, Blackburn and Bolton. THESE are the key games this season.

  36. I believe ‘our so-called ‘defensive frailties’ will be resolved this coming season, especially away from home where tiltles are won and lost. Last year, for the 1st 8-10 games AW played TH14 upfront in a 4-5-1 formation. This proved a success in the CL when we reached the final but TH14 didn’t like the formation (he likes to stroll around and provide a burst of speed when he gets the ball). I feel, as shown against Ajax, we will be playing 4-5-1 away from home this season and probably 4-4-2 at home. Whichever formation we play, we will be lethal, COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!

  37. That’s it Flint. If you’re a top 4 team with an exceptional manager, why not hope for the Premiership and/or Champions League. After all Liverpool have managed two finals and Manchester United dragged themselves out of a couple of third placed finishes.

I’m not even being overly optimistic. We have are talented squad, maybe not complete but neither was United’s last season. Fergie preached the importance of his team getting themselve into contention, in a genuine race, he fancied his team to kick on for the title.

This is us right now. Get in a race, give Wenger a chance to play mind games, give the older heads a chance to drive the youngesters, give the youngsters aa chance to be fearlessly brave and give someone the chance to step up and come to the fore when his team really needs him.

Just get us in the race and if it goes right, we could be victorious!

  38. Danny

If there were just one team at the top to overcome, it would be easier to believe that we can top the pile. With three others of equal ability, it is harder to predict. It is purely that which, I think, this season precludes a title win. I don’t say it can’t or won’t happen, just that I don’t think it will.

    YW

  39. So you fancy us to topple two of the three?

Fair enough but if you’re saying as fans “the best we should think for is second”, you surely do not believe in that possibility!

Because if i’m genuinely thinking of second, I’ going to stop… pull myself together and go for first.

Woke up the wrong side of bed Yogi!!!!

  40. I think being written off at an early stage suits us i think (a ball hasn’t been kicked yet and we’ve been written off!). I think our team is nearly ready. We are lacking natural width. We’ve lost two wingers in Reyes and Ljungberg, and this does not go with the Wenger 1 out, 1 in policy. I assume Reyes and Ljungberg were on big wages so maybe we could sign a more recognised player as we have the money to burn!

  41. Danny wrote:

    This says it all……

  42. Yogi go wash your mouth out with soap. Spuds bridge the gap the only bridge they have is LB.
Amos well done facts first class yes I agree Arsenal to win the Bloody lot. If not all the domestic silver ware.

  43. Aman if you just want to be negative, without explaining, it’s hardly worth being here! Where are you taking point with??

  44. Bottom line for me is had Arsene bought an experienced, strong, reads-the-game-well central defender to compete with, or fill in for, Gallas and/or Toure, and a battling fighter of a defensive midfielder to cover Gilberto, I would have genuinely felt we had a chance of challenging for the Premiership. It seems to me in attacking midfielders and up front we have real talent (that stills needs refining and bringing out more consistantly) but the talent is there. At the back (which is where our record was significantly worse than our competitors last year) we still look dodgy. Sagna definately looks more steady and accomplished as a right back and Glichy is turning into a big big hearted star but did you see the flappy defence in many of our warm up friendlies? There is little sense of real control and mastery of the oppositionwhen we haven’t got the ball. I am optimistically looking forward to a great season of real development and enjoyment but not a championship. Be realistic and enjoy. iT’S GOING TO BE GREAT.

  45. danny, I think Aman might be agreeing with you but its hard to say really.
I think I know what Yogi is saying. he is not saying we cant win the league or that we should not aim to win the league but if he had to predict where we are most likely to end up it will be second spot.
I think we can win it but it does depend on so many variables that in reality all we can do is make sure we are in the title race. before the season starts thats all we can do and lets see where we are as the season progresses.

went to a wedding yesterday and spoke to numerous spuds fans and they all think they will finish in front of us this season. totally deluded the lot of them. I do like to be the underdog though, it suits Arsenal.

  46. yes bensor,,,,we should get rid of hoyte,,gilbert is better than him,,song is not arsenal material and adebayor shouldnt be arsenal 1st bcoz he hardly scores goal,,if he is to be bcome then we shall suffer again,,how can u replace some one who cant even score 10goals in prem and has never scored in champs league for arsenal,,baptista was better than adebayor in many occasion,,jst bcoz of his 1st season in prem that ruined his career bt he managed 2 score 10goals unlike adebayor

  47. “baptista was better than adebayor in many occasion,,jst bcoz of his 1st season in prem that ruined his career bt he managed 2 score 10goals unlike adebayor”

yeah Ade scored 12 goals , 8 in the league and won us big games – unlike Baptista

  48. And it was Ade first full season with us too, he came as a january transfer remember. If he ups that tally to 20 in all comps , which i think he can , then he will be very important player for us.

  49. Ade gives us a presence up front and is a very tricky customer to play against. Ade also creates a lot for others around him. if he scores as many as 15 I would be delighted.
due to his injury recently we have not seen the development of the possibility that ade and RVP will play as strikers with Eduardo on the left. it might be too difficult to try it out now unless we are 3-0 up at home and cruising.

  50. Write Arsenal off! That’s not an disadvantage. Vomit those lines taken from newspapers all over the web ‘No big names, Tottenham ’s goin’ to overtake Arsenal’. Throw in the occasional ‘they going to miss Henry’ bull. And finaly a dash of ‘yeah they have talented young players …. but’. I have this theory (not to be taken 100% serious): there is only ONE journalist who writes all the football articles, the rest copies from him (or her?).
Where are we really? Well, we got rid of TH14 who was more a burden than a blessing over the last 18 months or so. He smuthered young players. His captaincy was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. Without him – and pre-season shows that – the young players can breath freely and play to their ability without being scared of getting a haircut by TH.
We sold Freddie (a true Gunner whatever anyone says!!) because it was time – if there is place for some romance I’d say I’m sorry, but it was the right move.
Wenger finally moved Eboue into midfield. Still not a fan of him but anyone (except that one journalist) knew a year ago that this was his place (if there is such a thing as ‘his place’). His replacement looks a lot better even after 2 or 3 games and is also good for … hm, 5? goals this season.
The ‘kids’ as they call them since 2 years have matured (which went completely unnoticed by Mr. or Mrs. Journalist) but will probably still be called ‘kids’ in 20 years time.
We buy a (well, almost) nobody from Croatia who goes on to the pitch and plays as if it was his 2nd year who can score for fun but Mr. Wenger (how silly from him!!) obviously doesn’t read Mr. Journalist.
Can we win the title this season? Hell yes! As I see it we managed to come in 4th last season only one goal behind Liverpool – with a team quite a bit weaker than this seasons squad. No reason to fear anyone.
The only question that remains is: how long will Mr. Journalist need to realize that this squad is now up to physical challenges as well. Estimates welcome – my guess: 2 years.

  51. Best comment in a long time BTM!!

  52. Today is Robin VanPersie’s Birthday. We baked him an cake which injury-free flavor(tastes like vanilla tho)
and we’ve sent it to him to keep it in his fridge for the whole season and take a slice two days before everymatch. so he can stay fit all season, he needs it.. gunners need him!!

HAPPY 24th BIRTHDAY RVP..damn u gettin old! score all the goals while u can!!!

  55. The two big sites here in America (espnsoccernet.com and foxsoccer.com) are predicting 4th and 3rd respectively, so I’m hopeful they’ll suprise some people. Chelsea are already having injury problems and if Man U loses Ronaldo or one of their center half for an extented period as they did late last year anything could happen. Man U and Chelsea were well clear of the rest of the teams when they’re respective injury problems started, if it had been earlier in the year the championship race might have looked quite different. I can’t wait for the season to start, I’m just pissed I have to watch Manure and Chelsea on Sunday. My $27 (13 pound{we don’t have the symbol on our keyboards}) brings me seven games on Saturday and Sunday, just not the one I want. I guess Mick was right.

  56. The season hasn’t even started yet so theoretically any team “have a chance” to win the PL. Normal realistic candidates would probably be the top four including Arsenal. But then its too too early to be saying anything. Arsenal fans will hope that their team plugs the holes in the back four and their young settled squad starts taking more chances. Chelsea however would look at their players and think that they missed out last year cuz they were unlucky. On paper they do have a very very solid team. Manutd will just have to be consistent and carry the form from last year to be genuine contenders to regain their crown. They play exceptional football with a solid defense. Liverpool fans would hope that Gerrard continues his pre season scoring form and Torres will strike a formidable partnership with either Kuyt, Crouch or Voronin. Scoring goals in the process. So in all, every team hopes and thinks that if they improve a certain aspect of their game, they’ve got the League. But then its more than just plugging a few holes or whatever. All of the top 4 may improve in that certain aspect of their game, so in the end its actually up to consistency, depth and luck. And through my experience, the head to head games between the top 4 may show who’s the better team on that day, but not the better team in the entire season. Table doesn’t lie, best team throughout the season will win the league.

  57. It is unsuprising that, apart from the telegraph, most papers have given creedance to a faliure like Rohmmedahl, truly the press this closed season has been poor. if the resounding thoughts of the media point out that we do not stand a chance of winning, take me to the nearest bookies, as I am placing to win. They have lived on whisper and rumour since May which is the job of siies like this after all, and I excpect a bit better fror my 50-70p a day.
I have noticed over the last week though a mood change toward the Arse, repeating parrot like the very positive points put forward by this site and the like over the pass month and a half.
    Keep the fires burning Yogi.

The best bits of pre-season have been the apparant abillity to dig out a win, even with a headed goal, and the renewed abillity to score a goal from defence to onion bag in three passes, a la 89 and recent champion winning sides.
Last years top three will all face tougher teams this year than last, they will drop more points too. With a positive outlook I can not see us loosing eight again, but as has been mentioned we have moved on against our week points, the grotty, wet wednesday type games, in the ‘unfasionable’ places.
If we can perform against the better teams like last year we stand every chance of winning the whole damn thing.

  58. william gallas has tended to ramble alot over this summer but i believe that he may be right. Arsenal are not favourites to win the premiership or be successful this year because the man u’s, chelsea’s and liverpool’s have bought big and have become stronger. but i belive that arsenal is one underdog that may suprise everyone providing they can keep all their top players fit.

  59. we love it when were written off…the more slagging off the better!!!! thats when we show all that we are the dons!!

also what YW is saying is that we will improve on 4th place this season by maybe 1 or two places but not 3 places.

and lets see if gallas will be loyal if we dont get in a title race i cant see it.

  60. I really cant see us winning it, I think Man Ure are too far ahead at present. I think if you take the starting 11 then we are one winger short of being two but it is what happens when players are injured that worries me

Look now Ade is out and if the VP11 injury at Ajax was worse we would already be in the poop, I like the look of Dudu but Bendtner is a Reserve Player, I would have liked to buy some real class in and put him out on loan in the Premiership.

I think the CSKA London situation is more precarious than ours though, and if they could lose it in the first couple of months, especially with John Terry out. It will be interesting to see if the early games dont go there way will they panic buy

Liverpool havent really impressed me in Pre-season but as you all say, you cant judge pre-season, I think if we keep fit and Chelski dont buy to replace the injuries then my heart says it will be

    1) Man Ure
    2) Arsenal
    3) Chelski
    4) Liverpool
    5) Spuds

unfortunately there is no way we will keep everyone fit and with ANC in Jan, the fact that Chelski can panic buy in a couple of weeks and Liverpool will pick up, my head says

    1) Man Ure
    2) Chelski
    3) Liverpool
    4) Arsenal
    5) Spuds

4th again, which is not good but if we can finish anywhere in the top four whilst only being 10-12 points behind its progress…..of sorts

Please Wenger, buy us a Winger this week it would make all the difference.

  61. i reckon we will finish 3rd no matter what!!!!

  62. The pre-season analyses almost write themselves, don’t they? “With the departure of the last two meaningful invincibles, both tossing brickbats at the organizational disintegrataion and uncertainty, Arsenal have a deep hole to dig out of….their youth, their inexperience, their inability to replace the best player of the last decade with someone of equal value, their fancy-pants passing football, and their unwillingness — inability, if the writer is a Spurs fan — to spend money, means, at best, limping to fourth, and quite possibly, falling out of the CL.” I mean, there’s no thought to writing this is there? “I have a bunch of team previews, the easiest to bat out will be Arsenal.”

What excites me about this team is its potential, its manager’s success going against the grain of conventional wisdom, and the fact that virtually every player can be expected to be better this year than last — that’s what happens when everyone is 19-23, or so. Arsenal finished 3rd in points last year, without their two top strikers for half the campaign, and they lost because of depleted forces and the inability to stand up to bullying tactics of less-competent lower-table foes. To me, the big question mark for this year is: have they found the mettle? Can they lower the goals allowed by 10-15? The offense is not a worry, nor the fancy passing. And as for TH14, the people responsible for his biggest goal last year are all still there. Does anyone think that this team’s offense will suffer from the loss of Baptista? At bottom, what I ask is this: do they have the physical maturity and mental toughness to persevere through an extremely long campaign?

  63. It’d be interesting if we could run a sweepstakes on how many points we’ll have come the the end of the season.

    I’d go for 78.

  65. Dear Danny, I was agreeing with you. THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING INTO CONTENTION means if we hit the ground running, based on the team spirit our young team has shown in preseason and with a bit of luck, we can WIN the premiership and/or the Champions league. Everyone on the team just needs to maintain focus & be responsible!!

  66. [...] on the game and says we’re in pretty good shape when compared to our rivals. Apparently Gallas is ecstatic that people are writing Arsenal off. He also admits eating babies. There’s also a pretty nice [...]

  67. What about Left Back..We have clichy but no back up..we also need 1 winger who can play on both flanks or two…rest is ok

  68. adc

We do have backup for left back – Gallas.
