Physically it was a tough game. What you can see is the spirit is strong in the team and that everybody works for each other. That is very positive
And there endeth today’s lesson. For those who felt that this side lacked the ability to mix it, they were answered in Amsterdam. Tempting though it would be to add the word ‘emphatically’, I think that would be stretching the point somewhat. However, the players on the pitch showed they will not easily be cowed, giving us hope that this can be transferred to a wet night in November where Arsenal teams in the past have failed to deliver.
A solid performance with both sides giving as good as they got. The team was selected to give more protection to the defence in the midfield but keeping the attacking threat, similar to the one that won at Old Trafford ten months ago. There were tangible improvements in defence, Toure and Gallas were much improved as a pairing. Not as imperious as you hope they will be in the season but getting there if they maintain the performance levels.
And the goal itself highlighted everything good and bad about the team. Bad? Why were Ajax allowed to travel so far with the ball without a challenge going in? Good? Denilson’s confident flick to relieve Ajax of the ball in the area; Gallas, Hleb and Clichy’s one touch football to set the latter off on a full pitch length sprint and Clichy keeping his head to tee-up RvP for a poachers finish. It would have been marvelled at if this were in the Premiership, for the final pre-season game, it was impressive stuff from the full back to have that much energy. Overall, it was an encouraging performance for the last pre-season game and a positive way to prepare the coming matches.
A pity about RvP’s knock at the end of the game although he bounded across the pitch afterwards like Bambi in a meadow afterwards so hopefully it is nothing too serious. His tongue has been sharp this weekend though in The News Of The World. Freddie cops it,
If you play nine years at a Club like Arsenal you can say some nice words. If you’re coming up with excuses about Thierry’s departure and about promises from the club it’s a bit weak. I was disappointed and I know a few others were as well. He had a fantastic period, he was once the best player in England, so come on be adult and say some nice things for this club, which is fantastic.
On AW’s contract,
It’s important that Arsene is here long term and signs a new Contract…Everyone will be a bit surprised if he left
AW himself was mischievious last night on TV, eh? Just about managing to confirm a contract negotiation before possibly disappearing off into convulsions of laughter at the discomfort of the Sky Reporter who had obviously been told to ask ‘the’ question.
The Sunday Mirror reckon we are one of ten clubs after Franco di Santo, an 18 year old Argentine forward, the best thing since sliced bread apparently. A one year loan deal followed by a £10m transfer is the asking price.
Not much else in the papers I’ve seen this morning other than their pre-season previews so ’til Tomorrow.

a nice summary. any transfer links at all?

Its good have another win and importantly from a tight match. Boosts the confidence of the team.
Lets hope we can scrape a lot one-nil wins this season from physical scrappy games.

It appears that Ajax were acting to instructions to go out and kick us yesterday. I hope we are afforded a little more protection from refs in the premiership this season but they seem to think we are fair game for some reason. We will need a squad of 40 players or more if every game is played like that one.
The defense did well and Sagna seems to give a little more of a solid feeling to the whole back line.

Dunno know the truth in this… but here is a wierd link to Arsenal… http://www.kurdishaspect.com/doc072007KD.html
Scrappy game last nite, reminds me of last season… dominate, dominate, don’t score and Hleb wanting to pass even when he has a clear shot at goal. The only change being we scored in the end and not the other team this time.
Some good tackles by Sagna though he looked nervous, but looks better than Eboue, who is now all over the field, not to mention his antics and unnecessary fouls. I think we can do without that and he should stick to sending in those crosses. We did miss Ade yesterday and lets hope he recovers fast.
Gallas seems to be lifting all the cups for us. Looks like he’s turning into some kinda talisman for us… lets hope he is able to raise his game after all this ;o)

Great blog Yogi,
A sunday morn to all the gonners!!
Feeling full of Gooner life this morning, isn’t it great to be having such great quotes coming out the club. God love em, but Paddy and Thierry didn’t half like a moan. Van Persie’s response to Freddie is a little gem. Firmly putting the latest moaner in his place, while re-emphasising his love for our great club. You can really sense the Henry void has helped the latest leaders come to the fore. Van Persie and Fabregas have massive responsibility now and it is clear they will handle these understanding that those responsibilities are to the club and our best interests. Great to see us put another massive European trophy in our locker. Quite a glamourous little haul we’ve put together. Cancel the season, we’ve just done the double! If these boys can grow together, heal together right now as Al Pa Cino might say, we can make the magical inches that this season can bring us back to where we’ve sorely missed these past three years. Just get this footballing side back into the heat of a title battle once more. To the doubters, I shamelessly believe!!!!!!

Toure must be absolutely gutted. what does he have to do to get a game as captain? he has been at the club and behaved examplary for many years and Gallas comes along plays averagely, moans a lot and gets the job. clearly Gilberto should get the job when he returns.
Agree with widow that we missed Ade. I thought Hleb was causing them all sorts of problems until they made a tactical sub in the 23rd minute, then he slowly went out of the game. In that situation Ade would have been more effective for us.
Gallas and Toure coped fine with the Ajax style of play which is essentially just like ours. play it on the ground through the middle. they might struggle with balls flying around in the air against big prem strikers. I have never doubted either of their ability on the ground which is amongst the best in the world.
thought the midfield did well to cope with a very physical game. Sort of glad Fabregas was not there to get kicked to bits. he will return in place of flam for the Fulham game. question is will Hleb play behind RVP or will Eduardo start instead next sunday. looking forward to it.
Diaby did not play any part in the games, does anyone know whether he was injured? also surprised not to see anything of Walcott despite Hleb looking a little tired on wing towards the end.
Overall have to be pleased with restricting Ajax to so few good chances on their own patch.

Gazzap Diably has an ankle injury.Walcottwas not even in the named squad yet Song was.
I am a bit worried about RVP being impetuous and in danger of getting red cards as he did 2 seasons ago, Ebuoe is also too argumentative.

Just a few words on last nights game:
Jens Lehman – Absolutely super apart from the few moments of Jens madness…
Sagna – I feel played better in the earlier games. If he clicks well with Eboue, the right side is going places.
Kolo – Solid as usual.
Billy G – Pretty OK
Clichy – Fugging legend…this kid has PACE
Eboue – Pretty good as a midfielder. A few more games in this position and he could be super
Denilson – Ok..looked pretty lightweight
Flamini – What a fighter!!!..Has leadership qualities
Tomas – Theres something wrong here. Maybe because of injuries, but he doesn’t seem to be a 100%
Hleb – I think hes going to enjoy this new role
Robin – Awesome..needs to tone it down..
DuDu – Great Great Great.

clichy is better then cashley!!!
he is underated, though not by us goons….quality..

Denilson did not look lightweight to me – he coped well with the physicality of Ajax and I recall one crunching tackle he made and came away with the ball to set up a chance. He also nearly got on the end of a cross into the box to put us ahead. I thought he had a good game all round.
Rosicky still looks a little off the pace, but he has not had a full pre-season due to the injury.
The whole team played well and there were no weak links.

I personally liked Dudu. He seemed to be better than Persie. A very good talented player with lot of place and a real head ache for the defenders.

denilson man of match
By: karim on August 5, 2007

I too thought that Denilson played very well. Flamini was very good as well and I am very happy that we didn’t lose him. What he doesn’t have technically he makes up with other qualities like popping in late into the box. None of our other midfielders do it, bar Rosicky.
Dudu is going to adapt quickly as I could see that he is quite tenacious which is what he’s going to need. He is also a poacher and I think that he will score at least 10 this year (hopefully all in the league)…
The defence played pretty well with the exception of the first 15 mins. Gallas had trouble with a couple of headers which went straight to the opposition. I am starting to think that with taller strikers or with strikers with jumping ability, we are going to struggle without Senderos in the lineup.
By: Begeegs on August 5, 2007
at 2:30 pm
I think the squad is still weak, Song is a weak link, we should have got Malouda or Ribery.
Rosicky and Cesc are still not match ready,I have no confidence in Senderos. if Djouru learns to head upwards instead of downwards he weill be better than Senderos.
Blackburn and Sparta games will tell us a lot.

Does anyone who saw the Charity shield think we have a squad that can compete with MANU or CHELSKI

Sologunner. In a word YES!
We played those same teams and were superior to UTD and that wasn´t in preseason either. If we´d played that match we very well would have won. It´s always easy to dismiss our team when seeing the players they have but frankly, the game wasn´t all that good and their preseason hasn´t been better than ours.
The problem we often face when playing Ajax is that they play very similar to us and keep possession very well, which means that the games tend to be a bit dull. However we showed against Inter that we can destroy teams when we play the way we can.
Also we´ve so far shown that we can win even when not playing well and those who saw last season will agree that we were punished for our inconsistency. Against the top teams we were great, but against the lower class teams we struggled because we weren´t motivated enough and didn´t show enough heart. The hunger, energy and togetherness this team shows is the most important sign that we´ll go places this season. Don´t look at squads, but the quality that our teasm has.
Rants over…

drenthe would be perfect for us, he was awesome against liverpool. him and eboue on the wings, no more hlebrosicky inconsistancy!

I watched the game between MANU and the CHAVS and can tell you that we would have won those games. I mean at the level of our match against Inter Milan, there was no way any of them would have survived. A lot of pundits have put us in shreds but we would surprise all of them, barring any injuries to the key guys in the team. We just need a winger so that we can push Rosicky and Hleb to the middle.

After seeing yesterdays match between M & C, I think we are looking better at this stage. Chelsea are still trying to find the best combination for themselves and trying to cope up with their injuries. Without Drogba they were nowhere yesterday. He is key to their success now. ManU are also trying to find their feet, but were better than Chelsea yesterday. Loved it when Malouda floored the “winker” with a hard tackle. He had a smile on his face after that, must have loved it more than the fantastic goal he scored.
I think if we had to play them we would have beaten them cause our first team have been playing together for a long time. I just hope we can keep the same intensity throughout the season and improve our finishing. I think Adebayor will have a good year and RVP’s comments were great. Thank god he said what he said and made all those ex-players feel small.
BTW, wonder if FIFA will take action against Gerrard for hitting an opponent. How this unveils will be interesting.

Well we can surely take on manu and chelsea for a match or two..but can we take 17 other teams through out the season..last season we were top if league were to be for 4 but league is for 20 so we were 4th..
therefore to win..we need to play each match with high intensity..passion..consistency and with luck..else it looks tough to replace chel$i and manu who have virtually two first teams..

Just back from Amsterdam.
On the whole, we seem to be around the same level as last season, but with the crucial difference that instead of creating good chances but not finishing any, we are actually netting one or two, and so we’re taking the points.
Long may it last!
As for comparing our performance v Inter against the Charity Shield duo… no-one doubts that on our day we can beat anyone. But comparing one of our best performances with an average performance of United’s isn’t exactly proving anything.
Like Lee Dixon said on MOTD last night, “my heart says Arsenal but my head say United”.
But we could be well on for second, esp with Chelski injuries.
