It turned out to be a good day for the Club yesterday with the granting of Eduardo’s Work Permit followed by an opening match victory over Lazio, seemingly injury-free to boot. The paperwork issue resolved now enables Arsene to look to bring in a left-sided midfielder should he choose to do so; I am not convinced he is going to do so but it is an almost pointless exercise to try and second guess him in this aspect of the job.
What of the Lazio game? Another useful exercise, highlighting The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of recent seasons. Due to the game being a friendly, it feels harsh to criticise but some of the defending was the wrong side of shambolic; it was not so much the individual mistakes – Hoyte & Djourou were equally culpable in the lead up to the corner that led to the Italians equaliser – but as unit, they were just not at the races. To counter that, it is highly unlikely that as a four, they will play collectively. Which makes the performance less worrying. Indeed, some of the covering by the centre backs was excellent, Senderos making one particularly good challenge on Pandev when he was through.
The other aspect that perhaps ought to be worked on was the gap between the three distinct areas of the team; Defence, Midfield and Attack were at times stretched more than they should have been. Some of the individual performances were below par as well; Fabregas, Walcott and Toure looked like the cobwebs are still not fully shaken clear whilst it was apparent that Eboue still has some elements of the midfield role to adapt more fully to, several instances of he and Hoyte being in the attacking third of the pitch arose with no defensive cover at right back; Sagna and Eboue looked more solid defensively probably more due to the former’s curbed attacking instincts. But there is still another ten days until Fulham when miraculously, you can almost guarantee that the levels will be significantly higher.
But there were plenty of positives to take on board. Eduardo was, I think, the most impressive player on the pitch. His workrate was exemplary, linking the attack with the rest of the team excellently. He was at fault for the Lazio goal – ‘Row Z’ technique is obviously not that important in Zagreb – but his movement was impressive. His goal was a simple affair but again contained positives, leaving aside the abysmal defending by the Italians. Rosicky’s delivery was better than a lot seen in recent seasons and it would have been easy for Eduardo to take his eye off of the ball as it sailed over the head of a cluster of defenders and attackers. Bendtner’s finish also was commendable, particularly as the chance looked to have drifted away as he neared the bye-line. The ‘goal’ he had chalked off in the second half also had a decent finish. If he gets on a scoring run, Bendtner strikes me as the sort of player who will grow measurably in confidence.
A side issue with the opener and several other shots from both sides was the movement that the ball was taking in the air. If that is the ball being used in the Premiership this coming season, I am glad I am not a goalkeeper. The midfield also might like to note that if they shoot from outside the area, deflections can lead to opportunities.
The real beauty of the game though is that surely we have got the miss of the season out of the way? Surely no-one can make a hash of the opportunity that Hoyte put against the post? Can they?
Today sees the draw for the Champions League Qualifier. Looking at the teams in the final round or likely to be there, it strikes me that there is not one team that Arsenal should be afraid of drawing on footballing merit. There are decent sides in the draw who should not be under-estimated but not one that we would struggle to beat on paper. Some are more favourable than others; the ones to avoid are those on geographic grounds, Donetsk and Moscow will not be looked upon kindly in the opening week of the season. But you know they are the ones we will get…
’til Tomorrow.

The result was nice, but the match was nothing like the Inter Milan game. The defending didnt look good at all. And there was nothing fluent about our game play. But I guess the Ajax game on saturday will set that right.

It was certainly a very poor defensive performance. I wish AW would get Martin Keown in full-time to drill the back four but I’m sure he is too stubborn.

i think walcotto is overrated cause he is english..dudu good…cud work on wings as well..so we have rosicky/dudu..hleb..eboue..i am not too keen on walcott..so a winger wud be great buy..else convert dudu on wing and bring another versatileplayer..may be martins..quick..direct and pacey…we have guys who can play in different positions and arsene is adapting them to do that..may be another year of TOTAL FOOTBALL…

Hold on a minute. Walcott missed over a week of pre-season matches due to injury. You cannot expect him to be ready and raring to go. It would be like saying Rosicky is over-rated; he too looked like a man who has missed some of the preparation.

yesterday we fielded virtually our reserves team. I think we were ok, eduardo, djourou and traore had a great game. I think the real test will be tomorrow with Ajax where AW might field a stronger squad.
As for Eduardo, I think this player will be even better than we antecipated. He is hard working, good with ball, scores headers, defends and creates chances. I think the stiking partnership for this year will be eduardo with rvp. The understanding between these two starts to develop.
By: Mario on August 3, 2007

I was at the game last night and didn’t think we played badly at all. This was basically a Carling Cup team we were playing with. Traore was superb going forward but is defensively suspect. For me, it was Almunia that was at fault for the corner that led to their goal. Djourou was shielding the defender to give him plenty of time to collect the ball, but he stood rooted to the spot. Djourou’s reaction showed what he thought.
I have my doubts about Djourou. He is obviously good in the air and has great recovery pace, but of all the times he cut out Lazio’s long balls played over the top, the ball invariably broke to a Lazio forward. He would be better suited to defensive midfielder in my opinion.
People say that Walcott and Rosicky were anonymous, but don’t forget that both of them missed the Emirates Cup games through injury, and are not as match fit as the others.
Cesc rarely broke into a jog, but that is the mark of his class. He strolled round the pitch spraying passes left and right and had so much time on the ball to pick his passes.
Van Persie, who was surprisingly given a rousing reception from the normally partisan Ajax crowd, oozed class when he came on. I am sure he will be our main man this season, as long as he stays fit. Eduardo capped a good performance with a well taken goal, and Bendtner also played well but has a startling lack of pace for an Arsenal player.
Final point, Song proved me wrong about him with an accomplished and tenacious performance. He made few mistakes and brought the ball forward reasonably well. Let’s say I was pleasantly surprised!
By: Fab4 on August 3, 2007

Fab4
It is a bit harsh on Almunia to attach more blame to him for the goal; on the TV coverage, you could clearly hear him shout three times ‘away’ to Djourou. Remember when the ball came into the box, there were two defenders and a forward chasing the ball so he was within his rights to ’stay at home’. Djourou or Hoyte needed to be more decisive as did Eduardo when the corner fell to him.
But that is the point of friendlies; they are the learning curve for the non-regular players, let them make mistakes now so that they learn for the season.

Good match report Fab. In some ways it is positive that we can beat Lazio with a virtual second string side and so many are disappointed with our performance or those of certain undercooked individuals. A good guage will be saturday but our youngsters do seem to be taking healthy strides. Man Utd did struggle with many a first teamer against Inter, so in context this was another confidence boost for our fledglings. Some argue the squad has no depth, but these games continue to disprove that theory.

Fair enough YW, I was sitting behind that goal, so I did not see Almunia say anything.
Apart from that, Almunia impressed me, especially with his coming out to dive at the feet of attackers.

I thought Song made too many mistakes, not just a few! Djourou needs to learn to head the ball upwards and away, rather than downwards towards opponents! I thought Senderos had a better game than Djourou. Eduardo was excellent outside the area, but needs to show more of his ‘poaching’ instinct inside it!

Well done Yogi another excellent review of yesterdays game. I agree defensively we were awful but i like to think this is because of early season rust. if indeed Arsene is after a left sided midfielder that idea might well have gone out of the window with the performance of the boy Gibbs the other day. Again we have that all too common occurance do we suffocate the potential of a lad or do we go with an experienced player who lets be honest might not be as good on arrival, only Le Boss will decide. Eduardo showed signs that he is going to be more than ok, your right his work rate and general know how tells me he is not going to take long to settle. Danny i agree with you the size and strength are a lot better than all the so called experts give us credit for. But im sure we all agree let them all write us off with not winning a thing, thats just perfect for the lads without the pressure to surprise everyone.

After watching Man U against Inter, it helps me put last night in perspective a little. Also, remember that Lazio came third in La Liga and have had EIGHT pre-season games, so they were ready. The performance then does not look so bad but I acknowledge that the defending is a worry. Wenger really needs to work on that.
I need to hear people’s perspective on Song because he is a bit of an enigma to me. He looks like he could be a great player but just as easily bomb out. On the positive side, he is very strong and is unshakable on the ball. When he did put his foot in, it was effective, more so than any other central midfield player at Arsenal. He also has an impress range of passing, again better than anyone on the team. He also has hardly played in pre-season so he is behind everyone else. On the negative, he seems a tad slow, and does take too many touches. I just don’t know what to think about him.

Speaking of size, let’s see:
Goalkeepers:
Lehmann, Almunia, Fabianski
Right Backs:
Eboue, Sagna, Hoyte (Toure, Gallas)
Left Backs:
Clichy, Traore (Sagna, Hoyte, Gallas)
Centre Backs:
Toure, Gallas, Senderos, Djourou (Sagna)
Defensive Midfield:
Gilberto, Flamini, Denilson, Song (Sagna, Diaby)
Attacking Midfield:
Cesc, Hleb, Risicky, Diaby, Walcott (Eboue, Clichy)
Strikers:
RVP, Adebayo, Eduardo, Bendtner (Walcott)
And they say the team is shallow? Correct more if am wrong but I think this is more cover than we had with the invincibles!
By: Tonex on August 3, 2007

I felt the positioning of both full backs but particularly Hoyte caused most of the problems for the centre backs. Both Senderos and Djourou made some good recovery tackles. The goal conceded was a soft one but then this was a team that looked at times as though they hadn’t played together too often. Then again we still managed to produce some good passages of play. There seems decent depth to the squad now and everyone who played yesterday is worth their place in it.
By: Amos on August 3, 2007

I don’t feel Eduardo was at fault for the goal – he slipped while trying to clear it and the rest of the team were too slow to react.
Almunia is a good shot-stopper, but he does not organise the defence well in front of him and there seemed to be a lot of misunderstandings between them. Maybe this will improve as they play more together
Fab4 – Djourou was also playing his first game back from injury so I think he should be given the same slack as Walcott and Rosicky
By: Passenal on August 3, 2007

I’m a big Djourou fan so biased – but he should be given the benefit of the doubt given it was his first pre-season start (inexplicably in my view) – also we should focus on the poor defending from the corner not the giving away the corner (we will give many corners this season and need to be able to defend them) – Djourou also did recover decisively and get his foot on the ball once the mix up occurred rather than let the striker sneak in – that would have been the disaster scenario. In contrast Hoyte was also hesitant and then didnt react to the danger – although I think the criticism of him and the rest of the defence is a little harsh. I agree that Djourou too often tries the neat passing header rather than the long clearance header over the half way line – but dont you love it when it works, we retain rather than lose possession and counter attack at speed (likewise the often outrageous and risky one two’s on the edge of our own area, which often lead to quick counter – but look silly when they go wrong) – that’s the sort of play that makes the team so exciting to watch (and sometimes frustrating too!)
By: JJ on August 3, 2007

I feel vindicated in my support of Big Phil. Whilst many were calling for his head, you know who you are, I have always strongly defended (no Pun) him. The last few games he has shown his quality and spent most of yesterdays game clearing up after Djourou. The 2 last ditch tackles he made were fabulous, the first one when the striker rounded Almunia and the second when that low cross was fired in near the end of the 2nd half. Djourou had let his man go and Senderos slid in and knocked it away.
I think it is a bit harsh to blame the fall backs too much, one is 17 and the other is working with a different partner in front of him every time he plays.
It was not all that long ago that it was Eboue that was “shit” and we must bring in Hoyte to replace him……I despair!!
By: Drew on August 3, 2007

Good article YW.
Shame about some of the comments being over critical of some of the performances.
Things that caught my eye:
Dudu is clearly a big plus. Intelligent, gifted & hard working.
Bentner, although not quick, scores the types of goals we have not seen from Arsenal in years.
There is clearly an intention to get the ball in the box more often & quicker. Hence Traore with Clichy, which worked, & Hoyte with Walcott, which didn’t on the night.
I think Eboue will be sensational as a virtual old fashioned winger, if he can cut out the sillyness.
Wengerball will always leave our defence exposed at times, so it is often unfair the blame individuals at the back. This is something we are probably going to have to live with but the benefits outweigh this disadvantage.
The big worry about the CL qualifier is that there will be a lot of decent teams well into their seasons. I agree on paper we should beat any of them but you never know. Remember the difficulty we had in beating Thun, a couple of years ago.
I think Shaktar are seeded YW.

I cannot for the life of me understand what Song is doing in the team, at best he is average, I think he is slow, over hits passes and does nothing I can see that makes me excited he’s in our squad.
If Hoyte cannot finish chances like that, he shouldn’t go forward, having said that I like him and think he can improve but chesting the ball back from 35 yards will not help his cause.
Eduardo I thought was fab, just hope someone helps him lose the squint!
I still think we need a winger, or buy Wesley Snider and play him along side Fabregas that would be good business and do it now before Chelsea or Liverpool buy him, he really looks like a class act.

Just think of Song as the ugly duckling.
In any team you need a workhorse. He worked harder than anyone last night. He wasn’t pretty but he was efficient.

Yes worked hard at giving the ball away. Song was truly awful. pass after pass to a Lazio player. as I said yesterday, he was also too often in front of Fabregas when a defensive midfielder should be behind the attacking midfielder. He is so far from being Gilberto’s replacement its frightening.
for the corner that led to the goal, it should have been Almunia’s ball but he did say ‘away’ and so Djourou reluctantly got it out for a corner which was the only thing he could do. the defending at the corner from eduardo and Senderos was awful. the former gave them the chance and the latter was like a statue.
the defence as a unit were not playing together and had little understanding , especially between the defence and goalkeeper. that was the main issue, communication. they are not bad players.
By: gazzap on August 3, 2007

Song worked hard but gave away the ball in dangerous situations often, hes not up to it. Loan him out now.
Eduardos squint is quite noticeable at first I thought he was injured, Djouru made a couplew of mistakes but has only just started his seasob Senderos was good in the air but slow on the ground, I prefer Djouru.
Walcott, Rosicky and Cesc are still rusty.
By: solgooner on August 3, 2007
at 10:24 am
agreed Solgooner. song is 20 next month, certainly not among the youngest of our players. he has shown little improvement since he joined us. yesterday on average he would do 3 things well and then then the 4th thing terribly and give away possession in a dangerous area. No arsenal midfielder can ever make that amount of mistakes. I Cant relax when I see the ball going towards him and I dont feel like that about any other arsenal player. the fact that he is miles behind denilson (19), Diaby (just 21) and Flamini (23) and that tells you he should not even be in our carling cup team. If we need a defensive midfielder go get Diarra next summer for free.
By: gazzap on August 3, 2007

Whilst I accept that Walcott is a bit rusty at the moment, I can not help but feel he is going to be something of a dissapointment. A player of his age should be full of confidence. He always seems to have the look of fear about him. Yes he has pace, yes he`s a decent finisher but he really needs to find a bit of arrogance to reach the highest level.
By: may2689 on August 3, 2007

Almunia has won me over. He looks solid and dependable as a backup keeper and i wouldnt be nervous about having to rely on him for big games. He has really turned it round in my opinion.
Song looks asleep half the time. He is way to casual on the ball. He needs to get a bit of urgency into his game. A few times he lost the ball and he looked shocked that someone took it off him, like he expects all the time in the world to do what he wants with it. Speed the fuck up Song and sort out that barnet. Might be nice to have Diarra as a replacement for him if he doesnt make it.
Bentdner is another that can look lazy at times. But that may be down to the fact that they are friendlies. He looks like he can be a fighter though, strong looking and will be dangerous from the bench. Hes gotta show the hunger to make that difference, i think he will do well.
Eduardo looked sharp and it was only his first start for us. He will get better. Nice to have a player who has those instincts and anticipitation.
Traore must have hit the weights during the summer. Is it me or does he look a whole lot stronger and hes only 17.

Traore looks the dogs’ proverbials. I would have no issue with him in the first team. I would rest clichy in the ‘easy’ home games to blood Traore. the way clichy hares about he needs the rest or will be burnt out by 26!
Bendtner looks like a Dean Aston or a Teddy Sheringham. very effective players, like to be involved in link up play, great in the air, strong on the ball, can score goals but dont have a great deal of pace. I think his lack of urgency may simply be a lack of pace. hopefully he has the intelligence to get round that. Eduardo also is slow but very clever. it might be a slow pairing which is why I think Ade or RVP must always be in the front 2 for a bit of pace. does anyone know what is wrong with Ade? it looks unlikely he will be ready for Fulham now.

I agree with you on Theo; I’m surprised people are bashing him for poor performance in one match after one week of injury and also probably not enough training. Theo will come good, people should just be patient. The defensive pair of Sendy and Djourou was terrible but don’t think Arsene will use any of them without the presence of Gallas or Toure anyway. Bendtner’s confidence seems to be rising and might just be replacing ADE in the pecking order as he seems to be taking his chances at goal. Good for him.

Cecilia, there are 2 channels here in the US that broadcast Premiership games regularly: Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports. FSC is available both on cable and satellite TV providers, while Setanta is available only on satellite. Setanta is expensive, it’s also available online for cheaper rates.
Anyone who thinks that Wenger would even think of dipping into the maelstrom of the Tevez saga is nuts. Remember that this whole issue hasn’t really been resolved, as Tevez is still owned by a 3rd party and ManU must deal with that 3rd party instead of a club for any future dealings regarding Tevez’s status.
There has been enuf turmoil in the press about Arsenal, we don’t need a whole other saga involving corrupt 3rd party agents and questionable contracts to add to it all. Kia Joorabchian–Tevez’s owner–is now wanted by Interpol for money laundering. The Brazilian authorities are after him, and Tevez’s old club Corinthians has cut off all dealings with MSI, Joorabchian’s company.
Thank goodness Arsenal isn’t involved with any of that sordid mess.

Bear in mind I would like to start Walcott on the RW, and we have Van the man and Dudu upfront, we now have only Bendtner who despite his efforts and goal last night will not exactly scare the opposition at this time (It may come with age), it really does worry me, imagine now if Van Persie were to pull something, we would be up the creek. Ok we have numbers but not the required class.

I also saw a comment yesterday that Wenger said Bendtner is not ready to start in the Premiership yet, so it obvious we need someone.
I do like Hleb by the way, but he is being played out of position on the Right,
I am sure the club are trying to do it, but we still need two players to effectively produce a prolonged challenge, without them I still expect us to be closer to the top 2 but it is in the back of my mind that so will Liverpool and the Spuds and 5 into 4 does not fit
