Rather than reading my observations today, here’s a match report from Easy Tiger, who went to the game:
After sitting through a thoroughly enjoyable game between PSG and Valencia (PSG thoroughly deserved winners) I then prepared myself to receive the team news for the Arsenal game. Having watched the previous day’s game and being aware of our injury pressures I was able to fairly accurately predict the line-up. However, the obvious surprise was the inclusion of one Kieran Gibbs on the left wing. Despite considering myself to be up to speed with the players coming through the youth system up at the club I had to confess that I knew nothing about him.
Many friendly games are fairly slow, certainly in the early stages, but this game was fairly exciting from the start. I guess the presence of a large crowd in a new modern stadium against high standard opposition meant that both teams seemed to approach the game as a ‘real’ one, rather than a pre-season friendly. After a goalless but eventful first half, Inter scored first with pretty much their first and shot on target. Arsenal then replied with two goals to win the match and to lift the ‘inaugural’ Emirates tournament. I daresay you have seen the highlights, so I’ll just give you my thoughts on Arsenal’s performance.
Arsenal played a positive attacking game – the only player I didn’t see in the opposition’s penalty area at some point was Jens Lehmann. The best play was seen down the right hand side, with Emmanuel Eboue proving that despite my reservations he does in fact have a great deal to offer on the right wing. He linked up really well with our new signing Bacary Sagna, who himself looks like an excellent addition to the squad. He receives the ball well, runs with it and seems to have a good cross on him. Sadly there weren’t always players in the box to receive crosses, particularly when our lone striker van Persie found himself down the left hand side.
However, van Persie looks to me as though he is at the start of an upward spiral of form and goals. Playing at the head of a 4-5-1 formation he ran the line, moved from side to side, held the ball up well and looked dangerous throughout the match. He produced a good shot on the run which he did well to keep low, hit two excellent free kicks, should have been awarded a penalty and scored an outstanding goal. Last year I was saying, pre-injury, that he was eventually going to become our most important player. With the departure of Henry, I certainly stand by that.
Arsenal like to play the ball around the edge of the penalty area; they like to play the ball around and work an opening in which to play that final pass. That tactic proved effective today, and Arsenal looked dangerous at all times. This still didn’t prevent members of the crowd yelling ‘shoot’, even in the most ridiculous of situations. Grow up. A right-footed player isn’t going to score with his left with his back to goal, and defenders get themselves in front of shots precisely to stop players having free shots on goal And what was with the ridiculous booing of Materazzi?
What I love about watching Arsenal these days is that every player is so technically adept and that they look so at home with the ball. Kieran Gibbs slotted in as though he had been playing with first team for years. The substitutes all slotted in and instantly caught up with the speed of the game. Every player looked excellent. If we can maintain the level of performance that I saw today, even in a pre-season friendly, then we can be optimistic about the coming season.
’til Tomorrow.

Guys
Sorry, once again I posted on the old article just as this was coming live
Good Match report, and I agree with it,
I too always keep an eye out on the Reserves and youths when I can, and Kieran completely slipped through. I had a look on Arsenal.com and it seems we picked him up from Wimbledons Youth Academy when they disbanded. He does look like one for the future though.
Has Alexander Hleb been reading Blogs, he was excellent over the weekend, and when his initial well placed shot was saved, by the time I had thought what has the poor bloke got to do to score, he banged in the rebound in probably the only place he could have scored.
Eboue also did well, and although I still dont like the idea of him on the wing full time and whilst it should not be an excuse to not buy one it is certainly an option in emergencies
Now the weekend was my first opportunity to get to the new stadium, and what a stadium, it is awesome and the atmosphere generated was better than I had heard, especially during the Mexican Wave on Saturday.
All I would say is probably a repeat of what a lot of you have already said, they have got to improve the Refreshments, We queued for 45 mins and were still 10 people away. I gave up as Arsenal were just taking the field. I was on the lower tier but apparently it is lot quicker upstairs, is this true?
All in all my pre-season gloom has lifted based on Sundays performance and just by seeing them in person. I still maintain we are two players short though but from the Program it seems they are addressing this.
Oh and what the heck is going on with Eduardo and his work permit, that could be really embarrasing, did we buy him subject to one?
When do Croatia join the EU?

Eduardo was signed subject to a work permit. Its only the media making a big deal about it, nearly every player gets turned down in the first instance as Wenger said the other day. However come thursday Da Silva will have no problem getting it, unfortunately its too late for him to make his debut at the Emirates, but at least he will be at the Amsterdam tournament.

Thanks for the Report ET;
Materazzi was booed for his pre-tournament comments about how we were worse than useless without Henry. I suspect the lad who RvP made look a Muppet with the dragback may have an alternative view on that one.
I thought it was a half decent performance, better than the previous days efforts. Hleb did well in the centre of midfield although I wonder if 4-5-1 is going to be more utilised away from home?

Eboue was my man of the match. He reminded me of Jairzihno, the Brazilian right winger of the seventies, who power his way into the fullback and powerful shooting. Eboue played well last night. The defenders earned three cards against him, yet he did not react. Hmmmm….. has he finally matured????
He can be our powerhouse against defensive teams. Hleb in the middle is another interesting proposition. the way he dribbles into the penalty area will earn us penalty kicks in the new season.
I feel both these players could be our key to unlock tight defensive teams.

Not sure on a MOTM, usually it is an obvious choice but I there were a lot of very good performances, I know it was Pre-season and Inter were also missing some players, but you cant take away the fact we out classed them on the day.
I think if any I would give to Kieran Gibbs, for what was an excellent debut at a young age, he was not overawed by the game, the fans or the opposition.
And as for Van Persies goal, I have wathced it back on slow motion and it is still difficult to see exactly what he did
I guess that if are going to buy anyone it will be this week, Hopefully the Reyes situation should be sorted by then, it cant keep dragging on as at the end of the day if he cant find a club soon, he is going to come back to us un-match fit and un-happy. I just wish he could of given it a go in Pre-season to see if he would be any happier without Henry.

I just have to say: where’s Matt Pratt? I remember him slating me for even hinting that Hleb is good again. I wonder if Hlebs performances shut him up this weekend.

Thanks for the kind words Farrukh, it must of taken you ages to think of that one – i haven’t heard it since, oh at least, lower school…
And yes – i did say i would be the first to come on and eat humble pie of Hleb proved me wrong, and i will say he looked a different player at the weekend.
Maybe his comments about being more direct will be backed up by some performances this season.
BUT – Will he do it week in week out in the Prem?
You have to remember that Inter are miles behind us when it comes to preparing for the new season, and they looked rusty…
As i said last week – i will love it if Hleb becomes the player that you say he can be – and that he showed in flashes at the weekend – as i am an Arsenal fan first and foremost.
Anyway – all in all an encouraging performance at the weekend – RVP, Clichy, Eboue, Sagna – and yes – Hleb all looked good.
And if we can just keep Rosicky fit for the majority of the season………
By: Matt on July 30, 2007
at 10:20 am
Hleb was superb in his role and I would expect that Rosicky would be the same as it is both of their natural roles. I would like to see this formation more as it allows us to use all of our CM’s. Flamini was superb yesterday and useless on the wing, which was partly why Sagna looked crap on Sat.
Overall, Henry couldn’t play the head of a 4-5-1 and our other strikers can do this fine….
I agree with Fergie, this team looks good without Henry in the line up.

I watched both the matches and against Milan, i thought we were looking better. different players, same old speed and style of play – pleasure on the eye i thought.
with bendtner and ade we will get more height in the box, adding a different dimension.
cesc – he was stronger and never got bullied off the ball
sagna – he and eboue, especially in the second half were outstanding.
Gibbs – what a boy, no nerves showed and was also strong for his small frame and wenger was smart in subsituting him before the end, and the fans loved him
hleb, rvp -super performance and the rest looked up for the coming season, i cant wait
i for one truelybelieve that the boss was right to let titi and freddie go, dispite sadness – but there will be a life after there departure and i think we will be up there at the end

Gibbs is the original hat trick hero i believe and very highly rated, can also play up front. Having said that, i felt he performed well but nothing like as well as the Sky pundits would have you believe! I was previous to yesterday a little concerned that we may be behind in our preparation and while it is difficult to judge against opposition only just returning from their jollies, we do seem to be reaching competitive levels. Some of our play was exceptional and it was clearly important for this young team to show the character required to get out of this with a confidence boost and if we can get the same in Amsterdam, we may start the season well, which could make all the difference. Sagna performed really well and while not being as sharp to attack as Eboue, he should become a very solid full back. Defensively he looked strong in the tackle, showed none of the postional naeiveity that Eboue sometimes displays and has pace to burn. He will compliment a very attacking side, which needs some stability at the back. Eboue did have a good game on the wing but i’m afraid it will not be that easy to convince. His shooting was at times woeful and this Arsenal team would really appreciate a better goal threat. The plus is really the five potential starters to return – Rosicky, Bert, Ade, Theo and Eduardo. Surely they would add further cutting edge and to top this Fab and Van Persie had a good couple of gears to go. This young team has to be prepared to step up and the signs are there. Van Persie in the interview spoke a lot about the “team”, stating we were a pleasure to play for. The attitude may be coming away from the glamour individuals and this can only be a good thing.

Yesterday Hleb looked a cut above the player we saw last year, which suggests to me that he is much more comfortable in the centre than on the wing. I’m not sure how that fits into the plans for the coming season, particularly with the paucity of wingers in the squad, but it’s certainly good for the 4-5-1 plan B
By: Easy Tiger on July 30, 2007

danny; I’ve seen gibbs play a few times for the youth team and I always rated him very highly. He’s got a really good shot and a good eye for goal too but where did you get hattrick hero from?
I think Hleb and Rosicky are both better suited to the central role. Rosicky was playing so well against Salzburg in a roaming role until he went off.
If he stays fit this entire season; I see RVP, Fab and Rosicky as the main men of our attack this season.

What was interesting was that we played 1 team,PSG, who were more advanced in their pre-season & the other, Inter, who are behind us. I thought this showed, so for me the 2nd half against PSG was the most impressive.
Although we shouldn’t read too much into these games a few things both negative & positive stood out.
Gallas worries me. Maybe he is not into it fully yet but he gave 2 examples of lazy defending that cost goals. This was too prevalent last season & must be cut out if we are to challenge. I would seriously consider Kolo/Swiss T at CB.
Playing Flamini or Diaby wide is only an option if we intend to defend. Both played well in CM & will have their uses.
Eboue most definately can be a potent attacking RM especially if he gets a bit of composure in front of goal. His pace is tremendous.
Sagna looks a proper defender but Hoyte combined better with Eboue & can also defend well. Hoyte looks a much more confident player now than this time last year.
I have always liked Hleb but have to say he was a revelation in the centre. He changed the game against PSG, where Cesc was “off the pace” & proved he could be the 1 to offer the creativity that was lacking when Cesc didn’t play last season.

I agree with pretty much every thing said above…however I think Eboue’s diving needs some attention. The lad has skill and pace I just don’t want him being labelled a diver and on yesterday we managed to add a number of unnecessary rolls to each fall.

There’s nothing ridiculous in booing to Materazzi. The man is a 190+cm tall centreback who DIVES, cheats, pulls shirts and opens his big mouth too often. Hate that cunt, don’t ever wanna see his “mamma mia”-hands act towards ref again.
Great to see our striking force playing pretty well in the Emirates Cup. Hleb in central position is going to work out fine.
He’s got what it takes to become great, now he must improve his decisions, easy passes and finishing. I believe we’ll see a better Alex this season.
Can’t wait for the beginning of season!

Toronto,
I don’t think Eboue did much if anything wrong yesterday. All of the fouls he drew were exactly that; no-one can argue with the yellow cards. So he added a roll or two but they all do. If he carries on like this, he will have shown he learnt from last season when he went down at the touch of a feather.

Hleb has always been a cut above what most people think of him, and yesterday he was two cuts above it!
Sagna fills me with calm every time he touches the ball, he is a good old-fashioned defender in one sense but also modern technically – a great addition to the squad.
Flamini deserves more credit for yesterday too – he was doing a lot of running, a lot of tidying up, and generally popping up all over the park. This guy is not as intricate an artist as some of our other players, but he’s a skilful and unafraid mucker, who I would be happy to see in the first team whenever we play up North or it rains or we face the nasty Blackburns of the world.
By: Andy T on July 30, 2007

Hleb did play well in the centre but he has also had games when he has played every bit as well on the right of midfield and at times out on the left. I guess given a choice most midfielders would prefer the extra freedom that playing centrally might allow but wherever he plays Hleb is a good player – that’s the bottom line.
By: Amos on July 30, 2007

Yogi,
I understand that “they all do” but it doesn’t make it right. Perhaps I am stuck to far in the past but I like all players to give it their all without adding the “actors lines”. I am not questioning the fouls at all, they were fouls. Just from my personal point of view I would like him to get up, brush off and play.
By: Toronto Gunner on July 30, 2007

I was impressed yesterday with a number of players including the young Master Gibbs, just let’s not put the mockers on the boy. So Hleb, all weekend was outstanding! I could have sworn that on a number of occasions he was actually looking to shoot first then for the pass…would love to see more goals out of the lad this year. I have already added my 2 cents on Eboue’s diving but that aside the boy has the potential to be an absolute star with his pace and strength. All, I can say is that whilst it is preseason the pace of the team looked frightening and if you don’t think Sir & the Moan were paying attention you’d be very wrong.

Top report – really good description for those who only got to see the highlights and not the game, like me. Just from those highlights – Eboue looked nothing short of spectacular. His dribbling was outstanding and he looked a real menace on the right. But Toronto Gunner is right – he still dived around like a muppet. Even if something is a foul there is no need to roll around on the floor, it’s so irritating, even as a supporter. He would get a lot more credit if he did “get up, brush off and play”.

Think I can recall him picking up the first Hat trick at the Emirates in the Fa Youth Cup. Scored against United as well i think. He was ok yesterday, but a little over hyped. He does not look ready for first team action aside from the Carling. He does have potential, looked quick with a sound technique, did display strength on a couple of occasions and was by no mean overawed. Just felt a couple of times in good postions he did not have the confidence or composure but that will hopefully come. He’s a prospect but just felt the Sky pundits went a over board.

Yogi,
Agreed Eboue didn’t particularly overact yesterday but there was one funny incident when Matterazzi mistimed a tackle and Eboue let out a deafening squeal. This usually would have been followed by countless rolling about but instead he slightly tenderly rose to his feet. Struck me that on looking Sagna who seems solid may have invoked a new macho side to Eboue, unfortunately it was too late, he had already screamed and Matterazzi looked particularly amused. For the record I like Eboue and think he could be a world beater….at right back!

I thought that Gallas did look a bit lazy on the goal alright. I mean he didnt go to win the header and he didnt take the man out either. you gotta do one or the other. If you cant win the header at least make it difficult for the attacker to get a clean strike/head on the ball.

also its good to see Hleb find the net. keep it up in the EPL
and fortunes might change for the better ( and more personally hleb might keep his spot). but in all honesty its the quality of the other opponent that has us all in a spin . have a 2- 0 or 3-0 victory over the mancs, barca, RM or chevs . and ill be excited .
infact ill be happy over the smaller teams too !
we still need 2 replacements . lets hope this reyes thing is resolved quickly , you might also find this robben issue with chelsea might have a part to play yet with the fees paid for reyes .lets hope the chevs keep robben, and force RM into a bidding war.. we can only hope …

So the gossip is Diarra from Chelsea (skysports). Okay, I have to say that I am surprised by this move (not confirmed). The guy plays CM right? I would have thought looking at our options in the middle field (centre) that we have an over abundance!

By: Toronto Gunner on July 30, 2007

As a tackler/enforcer maybe Diarra could find a niche within the squad. As we would all like a little more muscle in the side, while Diaby has been earmarked for this, Wenger does seem to want to encourage his attacking inclinations. Would be dubious if Chelsea were willing to do business mind. Wow Ethan you are positively bubbling, breathe! God knows if we do well, you will have predicted it some where! Still i’ll enjoy the sunshine while it’s out!

It was funny to see Hleb blow the fairly easy opportunity but latch on to the rebound and score on what had to be a perfect shot to find the corner.
I’ve always liked Hleb, he has spells where he doesn’t show up for games and is very anonymous. I’ll also never forgive him for the freekick he gave away last year in the CL against PSV. But I think he plays a composed and patient game on the right which will help us score a lot of goals this year.

I think that the Diarra rumours are a pile of shite. As if we don’t have enough CM’s in the squad now. He isn’t going to go and buy another one.
About time that Hleb-haters ate their words. He had a spell of crap last year, but the year before he was a damn good footballer. He isn’t a traditional winger, but I think that he has listened to his criticisms from last year and is now going to be a better player.

Spot on Easy Tiger and very encouraging the weekend ended up. So many positives, a few negatives which Flint highlighted with Gallas’s defending although we have to accept he is not yet match fit. I am just concerned that his partnership with Kolo might not be the answer, time will tell. I have never been a huge fan of Hleb although have always maintained what a very good footballer he is but badly needed to improve his final ball. I am forced to eat humble pie after yesterday and say what a revelation he was playing in the middle which again gives Arsene another option if needed. One point i didnt think you made enough of ET was the boy Gibbs who i thought was outstanding. He played as if he had always been playing in the first team and looks a real find in the Rix/Giggs mould so much so i expect him to be warming the bench a fair few times in the coming season. I fully expect Arsene to go in for another striker should the work permit for Dudu not come through but from all accounts i dont think we have to worry. So many of them played well and for us to play like that with an out of sorts Cesc speaks volumes for the coming months

Hi Ethan
I am too thick to understand if you are having a go at me or Rico?
Rico’s comments seemed fair enough to me even if we differ on Cesc’s performances, in as much as Cesc wasn’t exactly bullied last season.
I have to say that Cesc was not at his best for the obvious reason that he is building up his touch & fitness. I suppose the same should apply to Gallas. That by no means should be interpreted as getting lost.
Veteran, who knows his stuff, even says “for us to play like that with an out of sorts Cesc”.
I see we now have to beat all opposition 3-0 to keep you happy now.
Don’t tell me you see a glimmer of light amidst the gloom.
I even agree with your last para., except I would like Chelsea to lose Robben because on his day he is a match winner.
