Arsene On Just About Everything Bar The Meaning Of Life

Nothing like a tournament to prick the interest of the Press in a Club and given the paucity of opposition in friendlies that take place in England prior to the start of each season, there is little surprise that a considerable sum of column inches is being devoted to ‘The Emirates Trophy’, a frontrunner in the worst design for a football trophy ever conceived. It is, I think, the first home-based tournament since the Makita. Remember that? From memory, it was a four or five goal drubbing against Spurs followed by a win or draw against Bayern.

Arsene’s press conference covered wide ranging topics; well, OK, the season ahead and his future at the Club. In amongst his comments about respecting his choice in taking his time over renewing contract, it is those reported on Sportal’s New Zealand site that are the most revealing about how Le Boss sees himself and his immediate future,

It’s important that I don’t go beyond my role, that I recognise my place as manager. At the moment, we have a very special mentality at this club linked to certain people. It is important that I concentrate on what is my role. The players and myself are focused on what we want to achieve together. I stay in my role. I don’t have to take part in the financial sphere. I’m focusing on the football that the club’s playing.

Which is a poke in the eye with a sharp stick for those who believe that he has larger designs on the Club, sitting in the bath every night, singing,”If I ruled the World, we’d call the Club Arsene FC. It is a view that I have struggled to get my head around, he has never needed a Directorship to have the focus of all at the Club around the playing side of things. From the Academy to the First Team, the set-up is exactly as he believes it should be moulded to enable the success that he has brought during his tenure.

Not that he is complacent in what has been achieved. He has recognised that last season was not as expected, that the team were out of the running too quickly,

By the beginning of November last season, when we were 16 points off the leader, that wasn’t acceptable for us

For those that do not believe the current squad to be up to the task of still being in the race at the end of the season,

We went a different way and need to be patient. But, while we have a young team, we have experience. We must show the quality

It is that patience though that is wearing thin, that will not be given to the squad by some. Fair enough, each to their own and football is a game of opinions. The coming season I think, is going to see a polarisation of the support between those who will wait and those who are not prepared to do so. Unquestionably, the team should challenge for trophies but is this in the short term through unrelenting purchases that become cyclical or judicious acquisitions to strengthen a squad which if together in the long term can be one of the top two for the best part of the next decade?

Back to the Manager. He has one last salient observation made in today’s The Sun Says So It Must Be True,

Manchester United won the title and they only bought Michael Carrick last summer after selling Ruud van Nistelrooy. The lack of signings did not stop them

Which is something I’ve tried to point out previously but it has a bit more ‘gravitas’ when a professional makes it. There is a view that United took advantage of Chelsea’s injuries but that is the whole point; you win your games and let the others worry about theirs.

To this weekend’s football. What to expect of it? Well, the only thing is ratcheting up fitness. The results do not matter that much – a thrashing either way would for differing reasons, good and bad. Today’s team I would suggest ought to be completely made up of ‘Reserves’, i.e. those players not in your first choice XI. No disrespect to PSG but Inter are a sterner test so I would play the team I expect to kick off the season, bar injuries which would mean the usual suspects in defence plus Sagna, Hleb and Eboue on the flanks and Diaby and Fabregas in the middle of midfield with Dudu partnering RvP up front.

If you are going, enjoy. Remember though that it is a friendly and defeats or draws are not the important stuff. That is still a couple of weeks away.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Hi,

A few points, if I may. Eduardo isnt able to play this weekend, due to W/P issues: techincially he cannot even train with the squad on home soil. The hearing is on the 2nd August, fingers crossed for then. I would suggest it is why AW played him for the whole 90mins against Salzburg.

The impact this has on this weekend is significant, especially in combination with other injuries. We only have bendtner and RVP as fit strikers: ade, walcott and eduardo are all out. We also only have two fit ‘wingers’, hleb and eboue: walcott and rosicky are both out too.

I wonder therefore, in the first, how easy it is to play two very different teams, without resorting to very young players such as Simpson. In the second, surely this is a useful demonstration on the fragility of our squad: in that we are lacking in attacking depth.

Sky Sports News report AW, this morning, as saying that he is still after “one or two players, depending on availability…” thank goodness!!

  2. Spanish

Is it right that da Silva is out? He has his appeal next week and I understood he was not able to play competitively with the team but is available for friendlies?

That aside I don’t buy the fragility of the squad. It is only fragile because there are two games in two days. That does not happen in real competitions. None of the injuries are long term so it is more abnormal to put them under that stress in such a short space of time.

As for new players, I’ll believe it when I see them paraded before the Press.

    YW

  3. A work permit is only required for paid labour, what if Dudu was working as a volunteer unpaid until his permit arrives? And training is allowed as it is considered a non productive task rather than work.

  4. Good summary there YW.

What happens regarding the transfer if a work permit is not granted? Would he have to go back to Croatia?

If he is not granted it then obviously a replacement would have to be found.

As YW says, “it is a friendly and defeats or draws are not the important stuff”, so we don’t know if the players not available would have been if the games were important.

I would think there is someone lined up for when the Reyes transfer goes through.

He should be a big winger/striker. We need more physical presence I feel. No idea who though.

With RVP, Ade, Dudu, Bentner, Walcott & Reyes’s replacement should give enough attacking options. The problem with having more than that is keeping them all thinking they have a chance.

  5. He cannot play in any games held in the UK; as I said earlier, he cannot even train with the squad until W/P is granted. If it is not granted, the only option would be to send him out on loan. I would be really very suprised if it isnt granted however.

He’ll playing in Amsterdam, but not this weekend.

As for the squad’s fragility – I totally accept you’re optimistic ideology YW, i also think your blog is fantastic, so not going to push this too much – but I would say that the rigours of the season are also much greater than any pre-season schedule. Especially around the January/February time when FA Cup, league cup, Champ league and Premier League fixtures come thick and fast…and it is at this time that the African Nations will be on, losing us both a winger and a striker: surely then, given the usual occurence of injuries here and there, especially with players like Rosicky, you must accept we are looking somewhat short?

In Jan, at present our wingers will be: Walcott, Hleb and Rosicky – one or two injuries and we are in trouble. Yes we can play Diaby there, but that is hardly ideal!

  6. The ever reliable Marca is reporting that a fee of €9.2m has been agreed for Reyes and that barring a couple of issues being sorted out, it will go through on Monday or Tuesday.

If that is the fee, it sounds like a down-payment (roughly £6.5m) with more to be added on.

But given the veracity of their reporting, we’ll see…

  7. Spanish

Don’t worry about disagreeing with me, no-one else does!!!

The rigours of the season are as you say will be harder but the fitness levels are also increased; the wet conditions present less problems than extreme heat as seems to be the problem now.

Denilson can also play on the left, Merida also, da Silva assuming it all goes through too. It isn’t that we are short of options, the perception is we are short of experience.

    YW

  8. YW, I know you do not rate friendlies very high in importance other than to increase fitness, but i think the results and performances in these next two tournaments do matter.. Never before has an AW team gone into a season with so much uncertainty as this one. The fans and players themselves need to forge a belief that we are going to be still one of the top teams in the country without the stars of the past. To do that we need good performances and also results against top quality opposition. We need to hit the ground running and be on a high come Fulham.. If we were to go into the season (all be it fully fit) but on the back of friendly defeats it seriously would affect the mentality of the squad. That’s my opinion anyway.

  9. Eduardo would still technically be working by playing in either game, so he is out. This situation has arisen before with Nelson Vivas, where he couldn’t play!!

I would love someone to question Wenger on some important things, such as why he keeps going on about what man utd done last season & relating it to us. Man Utd finished 8 points behind chelski before going on to win the league, we finished 21 points behind man utd so there is a massive difference between the two situations, especially when we have sold more players than we have signed. He has also talked for the past two years about lack of experience costing us a title challenge, yet in that period he has sold most of the experienced pro’s we had left & replaced them with kids, so how exactly does that help. Finally, why are young players that we sign never announced. Gilles Sunu & Pedro Da Silva are now arsenal players yet the club doesn’t deem it necessary to tell us. The club only care about the fans when it suits them, such as when we renew our season tickets!!

  10. Yogi’s Warrior, good piece and some good points you raise. I hear you say that aside I don’t buy the fragility of the squad. It is only fragile because there are two games in two days. Personally not quite sure about that one.

Imagine this was october and we were playing a league game today and then CL on wednesday, I no not quite two games in 2 days, but what would be different, these same players would be injured for mid week game to. In my humble opinion have to agree with Spanish B on this one, squad lacks real depth.

  11. Just a quick congratulations to YW and all the above respondents. The high quality and seriousness of all of your responses makes this a near unique site. Keep it up

  12. Jimmy

    >Never before has an AW team gone into a season with so much uncertainty as this one

Uncertainty for whom? The players? I’m not convinced of that one. The only uncertainty I see is in the Supporters and so we need to differentiate between the two. The uncertainty is caused by stepping in a new direction; the old guard (bar Lehmann, Toure and Gilberto) are gone and the next generation is coming through. Some people find that unnerving; I’m looking forward to it. Somewhere between the two is the uncertainty. But it is in us, not them.

    Ashburton

I agree we’ve sold experienced players but the younger ones you refer to now have two more years experience so whilst one area goes down, another rises.

    YW

  13. Ashburton, It’s not good practice to make a song and dance about signing 16 year old academy players. The best thing for them is to quietly integrate into the academy system away from publicity. The last time there was such a big deal made about a young player was Jermaine Pennant.

  14. Ashburton Gooner, great points, couldn’t say it better myself.

  15. YW, I’m looking forward to it too. But i would be amazed if there weren’t subconcious doubts in some of the players minds about life without Thierry. Doubts that would soon be eliminated by a couple of good results… I’m just saying that we need to start this season well otherwise those doubts may dent confidence and self belief.

  16. Theirry was always a mental safety net for the supporters. No matter if we had doubts about the team or depth of squad we would always have a kind of underlying belief because we had the best player in the world.. Now in the fans eyes we are a good squad who is competing with other good squads and will live or die on our team play. That’s why people are crying out for big name signings because it’s more comfortable to think that you have one or two players who will always be supreme and bail you out if necessary. I think it’s quite an exciting season for that reason and i’m looking forward to it.

  17. my last comment on the Eduardo situation is that I am slightly less sure than I was a few posts before.

Sky Sports News, the Guardian and the Times all agree with my intial postion that he wont be able to play.

However, the Arsenal website has a list of attacking players missing out and Eduardo isnt mentioned: just Rosicky, Adebayor and walcott.

hmmm…why wouldnt they mention Eduardo as well, if he is to be missing?

As for squad strength, well YW, we will sign someone when Reyes leaves; I firmly believe that; whether it is enough, only time will tell…

  18. Like I’ve said before why does wenger have to wait on the sale of reyes, to bring someone in, if that is indeed the case.

Is this a packed night club, 2 leave, 2 enter. Surely reyes was never going to play for us again. Wenger either thinks we need another winger or not. For me it’s a smokescreen, wenger clearly feels happy with squad. Anymore additions will be once again youths with no PL exp.

  19. bubbler

PL experience is not specifically needed. If it was, no-one would be asking for Quaresma or have been wanting Ribery or Malouda. It’s interesting that everyone was getting excited about Di Maria. Good player that Di Maria is, da Silva has more experience yet many write him off.

    YW

  20. Watching dudu makes me derive a conclusion – He will be great against teams in the lower half of the table, against whom we struggled in the previous season. Those in the top half will be keeping a keen eye on him and will rarely make any mistake of allowing him for his darting runs in to the box.

About an extended deal for wenger, i believe he will take some time to pen one, as he would have made it clear to the team, all of those will depend on their performance .On the whole he would have set a “give and take” clause with the players, which will prompt most of them to have a killer streak in them for marauding other teams. so, the first half of this coming season will be very important for the players, they will have to win the games so that wenger signs a new deal to take them ahead. i dont think arsenal players lack that committment towards le boss.

The team will try their max best to put up a good show this season and they are capable of delivering.

  21. I hear you Yogi, why the reluctance to buy within the PL thou, wenger never seems interested with players who know their way around the PL.

Not necessarily talking about the cream of the crop, I think would help the lads having new player with that exp. I also agree that Da silva may turn out to be a very good signing. His very 1st shot the other night was on target and made the goalie work, good start at least on target.

  22. why is gunnerblog.com down – does anyone know?

  23. Ashburton Gooner, good points totally agree

Hmmm No Ade, Theo, Eduardo or Rosicky..

Can’t say im really looking forward to todays game, our real only proven attacking threat is Van Persie & Cesc….

Hleb & Diaby on the wings?, 2 central midfielders???
I like Abou he makes things happen, reminds me of Patrick in many ways.. not just physical statue but hes not a winger!!

Hleb – no comment – IMO hes had enuf chances
Seems to be one of those players that Wenger persists with when its obvious he isnt good enuf to play for arsenal….
    Igor, Cygan, Senderos, Flamini etc…

Plus how many CM’s do u we need? Cesc, Gilberto, Abou, Rosicky (cant class as a winger) Flamini, Song, Denilson, Hleb..

What i’d give to have ‘Rocky’ back or Nani flying down the wing @ the Emirates today…… & im not bein negative im being realistic

Im a goona til i die, but i just long for us to be able to seriously compete again.. im bored of losing & being on a learning curve.. i want ARSENAL to be champions again!!

  24. I think it is right to say that the doubts are in the minds of the supporters and not necessarily the players. That is where it matters. RvP, Clichy, Toure, Rosicky and others have all sounded upbeat recently. If these preseason games have a purpose it is in reinforcing that confidence in which case a narrow defeat or narrow win makes little difference. Short of a really heavy defeat this is just useful preparation.

Those supporters who need a trophy to validate their support will always feel anxiety. The reality is that there are so many variables in a football season that the strength of squad lists are only a very limited pointer the likely conclusion of a season.

  25. Bubbler

I think he would sign them if he could get them for a reasonable fee. However, there are an awful lot of players in the PL that are not technically good enough for him and they also come with preconceptions of how to play in that League. Let’s remember, probably only United come anywhere near the Arsenal style of play and I somehow can’t see Darth Fergie selling us Ronaldo…

    YW

  26. st

No idea but it’s been out for most of this morning.

    YW

  27. IF you do not think the squad is thin, then take a look! Rosicky, Theo, Eduardo, Ade OUT and we are looking oh so blooming patched up and we haven’t even started the season yet!

F*ck me! What the hell is it with us and injuries? Do we have a medical team or a bunch of quacks?

Theo is our ONLY natural wide player! That aint good.

Wenger can spout all he likes, I’m sure he said more or less the same last season.

  28. Yogi,

Your probably right couldn’t see that either. The great thing about all this chat/debate is, regardless what happens this season I guess were all still gunners for life.

Those supporters who need a trophy to validate their support will always feel anxiety. Great line Amos

I guess it can look that way sometimes, only singing when your winning. Shall keep that in mind.

  29. A real view of arsenal chances this season

The 2 questions which really matters are:

    1) Are we, position for position, stronger this year ?
    2) Can we cope with injuries and the african cup?

    1) If you look at the arrivals and departure, this arsenal team is a bit weaker than last year with the lost of Henry.
Whatever people said, you are kidding yourself if you believe that we are not losing one of the best player in the world ( Which player could fetch a fee of £16 millions at 30 and 2 seasons with plenty of injuries). Why do you think arsene wanted to keep him for 1 or 2 more seasons.

The arrival of Dudu, an unproven player in the premiership (even if he looked quiet good in youth tube and the friendly) and Bakary is not the kind of signing who will make a real difference (at least the first year). Which player in the premiership did really well the first year?

Dudu is probably a 10 or 15 goals player the first year which is about the same as a half fit henry.

On the positive side we are stronger because of the increase of premiership experience for the majority of our team and simply the fact that our young player are getting physicaly bigger (see clichy, fabregas etc…).

It is as well the third or fourth years that those young players play together and the team spirit, unity must be quiet strong now ( probably the hunger as well).

POSITION FOR POSITION WE ARE DEFINITLY NOT STRONGER THAN LAST YEAR BUT AS A UNIT WE PROBABLY ARE.

I think that unity will take us in the top 2 of the premiership .

Unity and experience is probably the most important over the all season (look at chelsea, liverpool or man u the last 4 seasons when they were all winner without big stars).
Chelsea didn’t win the moment they started to rely on Drogba, Man u won without Van Nis and Liverpool play as a unit.

    2) I think this team is big enough to cope with injuries or the african cup. Obviously there is no much you can do when you lose your 2 main strikers ( arsenal or any others teams ). Does chelsea, liverpool or man u have better player on the bench ( with more experience maybe but better no). Are they better than Diaby, Denilson, Walcott, Bentner, Dudu (depend how you see the first 11 ) ?.
On the paper those players have as much experience in the premiership than theirs.

    Arsenal forever

  30. A thought on the breakup of the Untouchables, and the “selling” of experienced players, which everyone moans about.

Arsenal have less “sold” experienced players than we have lost the Untouchables due to age, injury, and decline. The “selling” bit is just Wenger’s way to salvage value. Consider:

Freddie – has not played regularly in 2 years
Pires – did not play last year
Viera – ok couple of years at best, though injury ridden
Lauren – Was out for a year and played badly since
Cambell – ok year but no longer an allstar
Cole – been injured much of last 2 years and below level of 2 years ago
    Bergkamp – retired
Henry – did not play most of last year, and was far below his best when he did.

The Untouchables are mostly ready for pasture. If we wanted to have a reunion of the team at halftime we might need a ramp for the wheelchairs!

So I ask you, why does everyone critize Wenger’s sales?

  31. “This situation has arisen before with Nelson Vivas, where he couldn’t play!!”
Even when he got his work permit, Nelson Vivas couldn’t play…
Anyway, I’m not worried about Eduardo’s work permit – I’m 99% sure he’ll get it.

The Makita tournament – I have really fond memories of it. It’s the only time I saw Arsenal play in Wembley. It was in 1990, and I remember Bouldy scoring the only goal against Liverpool in the final. With his head, of course.

  32. To be honest, selling freddie, and likely to sell Reyes in the very near future means Arsene will bring in just one player, and that is all. If we were to bring in one quality winger, somebody like Antonio Puerta from Sevilla, it really does bolster the depth of the squad. Just one versatile winger like that who can play on both flanks really makes a massive impact.

Im very optimistic about this season, the unity has developed, players have matured, the team spirit keeps getting mentioned by Arsene as being excellent. Yes we have lost experienced players but these young players have had 2 or 3 seasons in the premiership playing alongside one another now. Their ages may be much lower but that does not at all mean our experience is depleted. Everybody has plenty of champions league experience (final 2006) and big game experience (which we definitely showed last year above all).

The one thing (quite big to be honest) is dealing with teams lower in the division especially at home. Beating Portsmouth, Everton, Middlesborough and West Ham next season is a must at home. Simple as.

Heres hoping for a fantastic season proving our doubters wrong. I just hope the lads do themselves justice.

  33. A further note on “replacing” the above Untouchables -

To buy younger “replacements” for the Untouchables in their prime would cost 200 million pounds. 4-5 of them were considerd the premier players at their position in the world in their time.

Arsenal are NOT that rich a team, least not yet – and for that matter the buiding of the Untouchables shows it CAN be done on a more modest budget.

Let’s stop thinking of the Untouchables as our birthright and think of them as a most spectacular overachievement…and the current team as Wengers next artistic creation…

  34. True Nado,

A thought on the breakup of the Untouchables, and the “selling” of experienced players, which everyone moans about.

I don’t know if people are against the breakup of that team, per se, I think it’s more the replacements are not of the same standard. Lets be fair it’s been 3 yrs now and team frankly looks no stronger. That untouchable team was developed along side seasoned vets, they all wasn’t a bunch of youths.

We all have to hope that the players all hit their peak together. However saying all that the team may suprise a few.

  35. Nando, you have a somewhat warped view of our ex players. For instance Pires got a serious injury last year, but had he stayed at arsenal that may not have happened, plus when he did come back for the final few games of the season, he was immense & Villarreal became unbeatable even against the best sides such as Barcelona & Sevilla, both of whom they beat. Vieira was a major part of the reason that Inter Milan won the league. Freddie & Lauren I will grant you, but lets not forget it was the arsenal medical team that didn’t pick up the fact Lauren had a broken neck for over a month. Bergkamp has retired. Campbell has been superb for Portsmouth, which is exactly why they wont sell him.

On your other argument, big players should be replaced one at a time, so you don’t drop a level or have to go through supposed transition. If Wenger had bought one player in to replace Vieira etc we wouldn’t now be in dire need of a whole host of quality players.

I watched the Salzburg game & despite the fact its only a pre season friendly, the fact remains the end result was the same as we suffered over & again last season. We never looked like scoring, we created very little against a disciplined side & our defence looked dodgy all evening. Wenger coming out at the end & saying we should have scored 5 was frankly ridiculous & shows that he hasn’t learnt anything from last season. The fact he can’t see the basic problems that every fan, media person & pundit can see is a major worry.

  36. Seems that I keep agreeing with you Ashburton Gooner.

How long is wenger going to say how much we could of won by.

  37. Mainly good comments today – I especially agree with Kiki 29 & Nando 30.

AB – I could agree with the theory of replacing the greats 1 by 1 if anyone could name the players who would be as good as them in their primes, & would be available to us, bearing in mind Chelsea would be prepared to pay 2 x top $$ for such players?

What a lot of people don’t understand is just how well AW has done to keep us in the top 4 for 10 years +.

  38. Flint, Wenger has also had CL money for basically all those seasons, which gave us an advantage over the other chasing teams. Now that a lot of clubs have been bought by billionaires & are happy to splash cash (even if it is only short term) lets see if he can keep us top 4. If he can’t then his achievements won’t look so good.

With regards repacing players, sometimes you may have to settle, other times you may have to adjust the teams formation, but there are thousands of players all around the world & nearly all the ones that have left could’ve been replaced by somebody. Can I name them?? No, but then I don’t have access to the scouting network that Wenger has. The only player that I think could never be replaced is Bergkamp. That guy was a genius on a football field & his sort don’t come about very often!!

Anyway, its now confirmed that Eduardo cannot play this weekend due to his lack of work permit, so I suppose we will get to see just how good this squad really is. If we cant beat a french team that has been poor for a while now by a decent score then we will all know where this season is heading.

  39. uk blubber and ash gonner, since you seem to believe that we cannot win with our current team and that wenger i just making and excuses after each game we don’t win : friendly or not i have some sound questions for you:

    - If you could buy one or two player which one would you buy to improve this team (bear in mind arsenal budget) ?

-Which coach will you get instead of wenger (someone which will win the premiership straigh away with arsenal budget)?

    - What player will you have on the bench which will score 20 goals (injuryes last year)?

I understand your concern but try to put your passion aside and see the real situation of arsenal.

Man u took 4 years to win another title maybe that is what we will have to wait (and we are speaking about a team who bout 25+ millions player).

I do not believe someone else than wenger can win the premiership on arsenal budget if yes please give me a name.

  40. For real #37 Flint McCullough

What a lot of people don’t understand is just how well AW has done to keep us in the top 4 for 10 years +.

You make us sound like a small club, throughout the yrs I think this club has always had money to spend, maybe not chelsea money but it’s been there.

Not saying should always spend 25mil+, but sometimes if you get it right for example, Rio for man u and rooney, you don’t need to spend that amount again. You have a quality player for 5/6 + yrs.

What do you want one Rolls Royce, or 10 skodas.

  41. Don’t get me wrong Kiki,

not advocating wenger out, and a replacement doesn’t spring to mind. However I wish he would spend some money which I believe we have.

Depends how you see things, but do you wait for the house to be crumbling before you spend to fix it, or do you yr by yr maintain what you have and try to build on it.

We all want the same thing and who am I to crit, but to my knowledge the team has never had a significant cash injection.

  42. And Kiki,

It’s Uk bubbler, not uk blubber, no need for the disrepect hey!

  43. uk bubbler/ ashburton

I dont think the CL money can be viewed that way. Over the past five years Wenger has spent less money than liverpool, spurs AND newcastle, and not by a little. Hell, he has almost turned a PROFIT on the transfer market.

And yet, if this arsenal team were sold today It would be worth more than any of theirs!

Sure Manu buying RIO guaranteed them a great defender, but toure is his worth or better and didnt cost a pound. Essien is a beast but fabregas is the best central midfielder in the league and did not cost a pound.

if i was on a football board there is NO other manager I would rather have as a business decision. his risk/reward ratio is superb. Arsenal will be sound financially for many years. What happens to manu if they DONT qualify for CL one or two years. A situation like Leeds? Man city? West Ham?

As for buying…when your team is 23 years old, every player is better the next year. Arsenal were a 3rd/4th place team last year, and this year they are going to be much improved without having spent at all!

  44. last point – Past performance is no guarantee of future return…

When you pay big for a player you are often paying for the past, hoping that it can be reproduced in the future. But injuries occur. different teammates occur, different systems, age, weather, family state…

there is a lot more uncertainty in buying an established star than most people think.

Sure one Rolls changes your team, but even a rolls can be a lemon, and then you have blown your entire transfer wad. You can be done.

look at teams that have been done in by that…Denilson (st deportivo), real madrid with anelka, Liverpool and cisse.

Wenger says instead, I’ll buy 20 kids for 2 million and 5 will work out. he decreases the probability of having a really shitty year that way, which would be the ultimate disaster

  45. well all i can say is moving sucks .. 72 hours of back breaking pain .
isolated from the internet and more importantly unable to find out about the
friendly game the other night .. and at 0-1 id rather not have found out .
And yoo-gs ! reading your last few posts you notably state we will only sign 1 more player.
well what is arsenal doing with the other 15 mil they’ve made on players this season !?
thats even without the reyes drama !? do the board members all want new sports cars ? or yachts ?
Also a quick check into what our rivals are upto reveals that the mancs and chelsea havnt suffered any losses pre-season, and to say that you simply dont want to win (or dont care)our friendlys mean nothing is just utterly rediculious.
With a huge bench at your disposal , it should give an accurate account of the stronger team .
It confirms my thoughts all along that this team isnt even ready to win the EPL last season.
Yet alone a strengthened chevs ,liverpoo and mancs team ..
Also your comments about getting rid of rud then winning the title is a little bit different
than stripping our whole team back to youth .. Vs just getting rid of 1 player . and its not like ronaldo didnt step up HUGELY to neutralize loosing van nestleroy . and the nucleus of their team remained in tact, not continually loosing experienced players for the past 3 seasons … i dont see any similarities between henry and rud van nestleroy .. sorry your just kidding yourself …and the readers .

also its funny that freddy , like henry ,like gallas all say the same thing and share there disapointment as players in the direction of the club, yet you still say WHY ARE THEY BEING SO CONDESENDING AND NEGATIVE?
did you ever think that just maybe they are just simply telling the truth ?!. I spose wenger will come out and deny that we are going thru a transition period again , and youll believe him too !

not sure what all you people are comparing arsenal too ? but you need to focus on the enemy infront of us .. and at the moment i regard a title push like david and goliath . we are going to have enough difficulty beating spurs .. CL football is over .. this club is showing no direction . or leadership . something must be done before we get too far off track , we are past crisis, unless wenger has some nazi dream of a U21 side winning the EPL , i just cant see the logic !

this team is seed yet to be planted . its not even in the ground yet . it wont be until the middle of august. to say this seed can become a muture adult tree within 1 year is unrealistic and unnatural . we cannot get past the other teams for experience . id say 2 or 3 years YES . providing wenger doesnt keep selling our promising youth (and thats all thats left) keeping the team together
is the only hope of having a title push .. no more experience leaving . infact we need another 2 minimum players . then things might be more believeable . but its just pure passion for arsenal
that has blinded yogi and the other tinted followers , your being unrealistic , infact im being unrealistic , as i truely hope we can retain our CL spot. if we can do that this season i will consider this season a success . rome wasnt built in a day. or a year. and this team needs to rebuild after loosing our invicibles .

  46. uk blabberer

read below .. ( about arsenes big spending )
    —————————————————————————–
Although Wenger has made some big-money signings for Arsenal his net spending record compares favourably with that of some other leading Premiership clubs; according to Peter Hill-Wood, Arsenal chairman, “Arsène’s basically spent, since he’s been with us, £4m to £5m a year net.” A notable example of this ability was the purchase of Nicolas Anelka from Paris St Germain for only £500,000 and his subsequent sale to Real Madrid just two years later for £22.3m. The money was used to buy three players — Thierry Henry, Robert Pirès and Sylvain Wiltord, who all played a significant role in the Double of 2001-02 and the league title win of 2003-04.

    —————————————————————————–
4 – 5 million a year in no way can compete with the other top 3 clubs .. something must give ..
and flint , wengers done a good job keeping us in the top 4 ?? your slipping mate ! as 3 years ago ( or 8 years into wengers reign ) you would of been saying top 2 !!

if you all cant see that 2 very different factors have changed in the past 3 years , then ill point them out to you .

1 the top clubs have had investors (new owners with $)!!!
2 spending in those SAID CLUBS is definately more than 4- 5 mil a year . and arsene is competeing with a limited budget.

For those that cant see that this gap every season is widening ILL open your eyes.

1-8 years of wengers reign top 2 finish in EPL
    9 finish 4th . – CL RU.. ( semi positive despite 4th spot)
10 another 4th spot with 21 points off the mark .- out too early in the CL.

    simply unacceptable ..
how you all think loosing freddy – henry – reyes – baptista
is making us stronger this season is just mind blowing ?!

and yogi if you start loosing in any friendly match – subs are called and the serious players come on . i havnt seen the match but im sure thats what happened and they failed
obviously .. and against a sub standard team . that the chevs or the mancs will beat ANY DAY OF THE WEEK !

  47. ethan_gooner

You gotta unwind…this EXACT same team came in 3rd/4th last year. Henry and freddy were injured almsot the whole season. And we were playing baptista so we were playing with 10 men…

the team will be stronger this year. Tehyve added 2 quality players, the younger players are better, the team is more settled.

btw, reyes/baptista/gallas…they sort of prove my point. These were the “big” money signings (along with hleb and rosicky).

  48. Is it time to panic?
Just watched the first half of todays game, and based on that and wednesdays game, its safe to say that we are nothing short of awful. I know people will say that we are missing a number of “key” players, but that beeing the case, it just shows that our squad is too slim. We might very well miss this number of players in-season and then loose points.

The fact that we, like last year, is missing natural wingers is all too obvious. We have no creativity, goalthreat and speed on our flanks; last year all over again. Its really strange that Wenger hasnt adressed this with buying both a right wing and a left wing. Im not gonna ask Wenger to jump ship, but the fact that he hasnt done anything with this problem is questionable and alarmming.

Bendter is offering nothing, and to think that RvP can take up where Henry left off is crazy. Rvp is a 10-15 goals per season player, like somebody else staated earlier. Where are the goals going to come from?

Finally, lets conclude, based on one and a half games, that nothing has changed since last year. This doesnt look good.

  49. “Can I name them?? No, but then I don’t have access to the scouting network that Wenger has.”

Well I can’t name them either & perhaps they just ain’t out there because none of you buy buy boys seem to be able to name names either.

Arsenal are a huge club but at the moment we do not have the financial resources to go toe to toe with Man U or Chelsea. It is a fact of life & I for 1 don’t want the club to get further into debt so that we get sucked into possible short term gain for very long term pain like Leeds.

aintnobodyworryin- no pre season friendlies don’t mean much otherwise I would be pretty pleased with the 2nd half.

Hope the move went well Ethan.

Pleased to see we still disagree on virtually everything.

  50. Oh man. Ethan, the board is not planning to buy new (Raymond) luxury yachts for them, they haven’t been taking dividends for quite a long time, in fact. Arsène said today that he had ione or two players in mind, depending on availavility. So don’t panic.

And also… on wednesda we played well and missed some very good chances, but lost. So some people were upset. Today we win playing not so fine in the first half, and we have the same reactions. I think it’s another sign of people being overreacting way too much about tiny things. Transfer windows parafernalia in the media has turn pre-season into desperation time for many. It’s getting worst every year. Let’s have some patience. And if we don’t spend 19395 gazilion bucks in Kaká and Ronaldinho then so be it. We can save money also, that’s good for the club too. One extra attacking player and we should be fine. That and Eduardo getting his papers right. Here’s hoping.

  51. thought true width and pace down the wings coupled with strength in the middle won us the game despite only playing at 80% fitness. when you get the ingredients right sometimes wins just follow. compare that with the constant knocking on the door of our narrow formation that we normally use where we seeminly have 20 chances and cant score. I really like Bendtner. OK so he is a typical arsenal player and missed chances but I loved his strength and causes defenders headaches and he is a really good replacement for Adebayor. With Walcott and Ade back I think we are decent team but still with a relatively thin squad. wenger has said he will see to that with ‘one or two more players’ which is a relief.
Hleb looked better in a central position and even with only one goalscorer on the pitch, we threatened quite a lot second half.
Clichy and traore worked well. Traore just needs a bit more experience as does Sagna by the looks of it. Eboue and Hoyte also made a good pair. it was similar to the impressive carling cup team last season, which I thought outperformed the first team in many games. Overall I am happy with what I saw, but I think when we go with our ‘first’ team we may revert back to our bad habits.
I dont want to see Hleb on the wing and I really want Diaby in the middle. also I like a deep sitting Bergkamp type player and while we have a few of those in the squad (Ros/Hleb), when Cesc plays there is no room for that kind of player. Its a weird one – cesc is our best player but his presence in the team has so many knock ons to other positions in the team.

  52. Just back from the Emirates – I thought all our players did well today considering it’s a pre-season friendly and they’re not fully fit yet. Second half in particular.

The Toure/Senderos partnership was fantastic – Senderos did not miss one defensive header today and Kolo looked like he had springs in his boots getting up for so many headers. Gael ‘force’ Clichy was really up for it and the Eboue/Hoyte pairing down the right looks really promising too.

The team certainly don’t look like they’re full of doubt and uncertainty despite what the doomsayers think.

  53. [...] Arsene On Just About Everything Bar The Meaning Of Life Nothing like a tournament to prick the interest of the Press in a Club and given the paucity of opposition in […] [...]

  54. pass,
they look exsactly the same ! no width , no hunger infront of goal. sorry things so far havnt changed that much . the things that made our team great ,fluency down the wings just aint happening . and RVP still needs more dimensions to his game .
friendlys do mean something . it means we are in the shite.

also NACHO boy . do the maths . work out the INs and OUTS
this summer and you will find arsene should have 15 mil to spend and thats even without any 4-5 million that the club gives from there pools. so wheres the money gone?

    well flint
hopefully youll be starting to smell the bacon now .
yes we won at home but we need a new manager . the display was nothing short of average . we will be lucky currently to make top 6 ..

Our club was in such a great position a few years ago .
we had high morale, winning everything , invicible !
am i the only one who sees this decline , or do you all subscribe to the same zanax medication online?(CAN I GET SOME ??), OR, is it a yogis website thing ?

putting a team together that will challenge is any clubs
motivation , however we havnt done that for a long while .
and with this current squad we are some way off even finding out !!! .

it seems angel has snubbed us for what we regard as a lesser team benfica. we can expect more the same with our mass exodus of experience . BUY NOW WHILST WE STILL HAVE CL TO GET THE GOOD PLAYERS IN !!!!

i remember a chap on here a while ago complaining that the club had lied to him , as they said they were putting up season memberships but only with the veiw to remain compeditive ! well i havnt seen that ,wheres all the money going ?? this season ??? (SANGA AND DUDU COST LESS THAN HENRY ALONE !) im almost sure wenger will go , i have been saying that since i raised the issue myself , long before the media hounds started smelling the gravy, for me , wenger sTaying or going means nothing ! infact id like to see the back of him . But for the players , the youth, its important that he commits .
when questioned he has all the hallmarkings of someone avoiding an issue !
,and that means he isnt someone who will talk about the issue as it will have a negative impact on the club ..
IM sure its all based on DD and if he can mount a takeover ,
but why on earth would the board and more importantly PHW give up there positions when the new stadium is still largely an untapped money pit .. a virtual gold mine of revenue (in there eyes) im sure anyone would wait to see how it pans out . its like donald trump building up his empire , to sell it to someone else before he even starts
making money.. i think any takeovers are only fiction this season .

    so therefore my point ?
krankies money wont save us this season!!!
    arsene hasnt saved us !!!
falling out of the top 4 is a reality !
why wont anyone do anything ???
why is everyone so blind sided??
people like dani alves and david villa are the calibre we require. jefferson farfan , yoan gourguff .. all these players probly wouldnt join us now anyhow !
scarey times ahead being an arsenal fan !

  55. PASSENAL

I think Gallas/sendy partnership was better than Tour/Sendy in the game. Toure/Gallas has never worked well after several tries. May be AW should try Gallas/Sendy combination once and again see if it works. Again, its like Traore can do well upfront on the left as he’s pacy and likes going forward. Bendtner will only improve and has really introduced a new dimension in our attack; a partnership with Ade could solve our northern teams long ball problem.

  56. I take your point Cecilia, it worked fine, but Gallas and Senderos both play left of centre, so Toure/Senderos or Gallas/Djourou, which Arsene intended to play on Weds is the way to go for me. Toure/Senderos already have a good understanding from the Champions League run.

Ethan, when you are at the match you see things that aren’t evident on the TV. First half was not great but even so there were a lot of positives. The defence were much better than on Weds and held out against some good attack play from PSG. Cesc was tackling and getting about. Senderos’ heading was magnificent and even his passing has improved, Clichy was a dynamo and his final ball is getting better. Second half was a revelation. Four full backs on the pitch and they were more attacking and produced more goal scoring opportunities than in the first half. Hleb was great too.

Pre-season is about gaining fitness and trying out new things. The players are still a bit rusty, but if you watch the game bearing these things in mind there are plenty of positives to take from it.

  57. Ethan,

Who exactly do you think is going to know Arsenal from the top 4? Who? What teams have really improved?

West Ham? Theyve bot 50 new players in last 12 months – every misfit and unwanted and overpriced asset in the league. They won’t gel, no way.

Spurs? You don’t need 15 forwards on a team. You can only play 2. They will struggle like last year. Adding marcus Bent at 16 million is silly. Those guys spend for the pleasure of it.

Newcastle – good luck with fat sam. His method is not meant to win games, but to tie them. and top 4th place teams need wins.

Liverpool? They were already in top 4 and they’ve bot torres. Anyone wanna wager he struggles this year? 22 year old never having left madrid or playing in spanish football going to live in liverpool with a million scoucers for company. Plus the welcome to england kicks and punches. It’s not only Arsenal signings that take 6 months to adjust to england. Have they improved more than arsenal? I dont think so, and last year we beat them badly when we played them

Really, the only team that impressed me with their improvement is Manure. They bot good and young, and the new guys will not be under pressure to perform from day 1.

I say we finish top 3.

  58. As for Senderos

I have always felt he was maligned unjustly. He can be error prone but he provides a physical presence arsenal need. I agree toure and gallas dont inspire me together. Maybe in Europe but in england you need a BIG man in the middle, and arsenal need him more than most. I liked toure with senderos…toure can cover for senderos’s pace and senderos can cover for toure’s height.

  59. nando

you have been eating to much spicy chicken mate!!!

senderos is a fukin liability,he can be great but you always know a mistake is just around the corner right when we dont need it!! also he is scared of dogba!!
