Friendly Fire

So he first pre-season defeat, eh? 0 – 1 to Salzburg. Hmmmm. Third game, first goal conceded to a team that are six weeks ahead in terms of fitness. Worried? Not in the slightest. A tour of Austria is not going to make or break a season; given that many will not have played a full game yet, there is no point in getting bent out of shape about the performance. Sorry, guys, but I don’t care if the third pre-season game ends in a defeat; I have not one jot of interest in knowing we could have hit six. Too much importance is being attached to matches involving players who are still ring-rusty from a Summer on the beach and on the Sangria. Despite attempts to make it otherwise, I am not bothered by Gallas being captain instead of Toure, Lehmann, Uncle Tom Cobley and All. Pre-season games are about regaining fitness and touch. There are four more to go, the first XI will play together in those but let’s keep a sense of perspective over this; if Fulham beat us in three or four weeks time, there’s a time to be concerned. There is also a time to put it right but if you want new signings, I will be surprised if any arrive. Maybe one more at a push.

It is interesting the perspectives put upon this performance by the media. The Sun Says So It Must Be True reports that ‘Arsene Wenger proved he has forgiven William Gallas by making him captain for this friendly‘, noting that ‘boss Wenger will take heart from the fact his ring-rusty players had more than enough chances to win the game’. I know, I know, I had to lie down too; The Sun not making an Arsenal Crisis out of this? Weird times, eh?

Over at The Daily Telegraph, Martin Smith keeps that inner-tabloid just about on a leash, starting off with a slow-burner, almost delving into Arsenal bashing but pulls back from the edge, managing to remember it’s a friendly.

And that’s the point. The past couple of weeks and those leading up to the start of the season are all about fitness. The next four games are about building understandings before the season starts. They are about AW getting his first choice XI out on the pitch for at last forty five minutes together, although with Rosicky having a minor hamstring injury, it may be unlikely.

The regime picks up this weekend and the standard of opposition too; PSG and then Internazionale. Yet still nothing should be read into the result; the teams performance to a degree will matter but not so much. A good pre-season quite often flatters to deceive. Look at last year for example; five wins and  a draw, nineteen for, three against. Which proved what exactly as we turned in the worst start under Wenger’s reign. 2005-06: seven wins, one draw, one defeat. Thirty goals scored, eleven conceded to show us what? At that point, you would have thought a title challenge was on the way; we would have laughed if anyone had said that we would be unlucky to lose to Barcelona in Paris. Sorry, you cannot tell anything from pre-season so don’t read much into it.

Finally today, if you are off to The Emirates Cup this weekend, can you drop me a mail at the addy on the ‘About‘ page.

  1. Flint McCullough

Absolutely spot on YW. Great stuff.

I would add however that Salzburg looked a well organised team under Trappatoni (?).

They are the Austrian champions & I belief they could be possible opponents in the CL qualifiers, depending on seedings.

If so they would be no push overs.

    Can anyone clarify that?

  2. Hey Yogi,

The title for the photo of the 1998 FA cup is given as 1998 League champions on the AFC trophies page. Please change it.

  3. Can anyone clarify that Trappatoni looks like Frank Drebben from police squad ??

  4. Also, don’t forget that Salzburg are already 3 games into their domestic season so are way ahead of us in terms of fitness levels.

  5. I’m not sure YW, I do agree that we should not go overboard about losing, but I still think they are useful games to tell wenger whether some of his gambles are going to work or not and thus whether he should buy another player to cover.
If nothing else the spate of injuries already should be a little wake up call because I feel the squad is thin and thought the same before this defeat.
But I do agree we should not hang any importance on the result though the poorer aspects of the performance were worrying similar to large parts of last season.
If we were to lose to Fulham and Blackburn or the CL qualifier I would hope that wenger would spend some cash before the window closes.

  6. Anyone know where I can get some footage of the game?
Saw highlights of the other friendlies on youtube but nothing this time around for the Salzburg game.

  7. Eamonn; the highlights aren’t even on the Arsenal site yet… you have to wait til they’re up and someone decripts them and uploads them.

    Wait until tomorrow mate.

  8. Cheers, Farrukh.

Is its just me or is this the longest Summer ever.
    Crap weather isn’t helping either.

  9. I usually agree with you but I am a bit uncomfortable with Wenger’s failure to sign a wide player.

  10. Wise words Yogi. It has always seemed to me that the season has always proved more succesful when we have had a poor preseason in terms of results. Supporting the adage that ‘success teaches you nothing, you only ever learn from failure’.

  11. Toronto Gunner

Was I the only one that was impressed with Dudu? I thought his trickery and use of space was sublime at times, and yes I had hoped for better finishing but it was just his second hit out. All in all I was pleased, I can positives coming throughout the season as we continue to grow.

The only area of concern is that the finishing woes from last season and yesterdays game may play on the minds of the players.

Signing off from Toronto an Arsenal Mecca Not!!

  12. I saw alot of doom mongerers out there last night. I didn’t think that we were bad and took a lot of positives out of the match. Dudu looked good, although he didn’t score, he at least got himself into positions to score. Diaby and Hleb were superb.

Also, Wenger didn’t say that he wouldn’t be buying any new players and he hasn’t appointed a director of football either, so it looks promising.

  13. Farrukh – the highlights are indeed on the site. Goto Matches – Pre-Season

  14. For all those that don’t understand Wenger should listen to his interview on player development and the Academy.

The man is adicted to the Arsenal project.

  15. Same old Hleb running into three defenders and losing the ball. Same old defence failing to clear routine crosses. Same old midfield looking like they couldn’t score in 4 hours. Same old attack overelaborating. Same old Wenger unable to change the shape of the team, pace of the match or make tactical substitutions that turn the game. I know it’s only a friendly, I know Red Bull are ahead in their fitness schedule, but I thought we were alarmingly inept last night. All the power, pace and penetration of the 2004 team has been completely gone for a year now.

  16. The defeat did not worry me, but the performance did, we had a strong team out in the 1st half and hardly created anything. it was just a continuation of Portsmouth away last season and I whilst I admire your optimism, I think finding out we have problems in the Fulham game is too late, most of the Decent players will be unavailable then and some will already have moved.

Also Pre-season is not just about getting fit and regaining touch, it is a time for the Manager to try new ideas out, one of which is Substituting buying a World Class Proven Goal Scoring Winger with a Right Back!!!!

It was not all doom though, Diaby was the bright light and he may pressure Gilbertos spot which is maybe why Gallas got the Armband, and Eduardo looked good, just needs sharpening. I hope the dive is not a shape of things to come though.

the width issue is critical in my view. Rosicky got a knock last night and it showed we are seriously in need of a winger maybe 2. Hleb is a squad player at best, Walcott is gonna be there but not consistantly for another year or so and I am sorry Eboue is not a winger, never has been never will be.

I hope I am wrong but Mr Wenger is taking a very big gamble on current players making a 20 point improvement to catch up with other squads that have improved further. I personally lean towards the gamble failing.

  17. Having read the sugar-coated analysis of Yogi, I have now gone through the reality check with your responses above which I find a bit alarming since its a synthesis of the last two seasons: conceding unnecessarily, beating defenders but failing to finish and inability to change direction of our game. Now, where are me tablets!

  18. what you mean , you lean towards the gamble failing . did you not pay any attention to wengers wise words about if you make a league of the top four we are top , if you make a league of the top 10 we finish second . its the bottom 10 that we need to improve against. which means keeping clean sheets against the teams expecting to finish in the bottom 10 and scoring the odd goal , 1-0 to the arsenal – back to our old chant and for sure we will finish in the top 2 as man utd were lucky last year – did they have a decent striker , no rooney couldnt hit a barn door for most of the year , though lets hope they dont get tevez before the transfer window . Chelski are the main threat and liverpool are just underachieving liverpool and will finish 4th , tottenham scum will have an improvement but will still be 10 points off 4th place in 5th come the end of the season , then hopefully the money should start to roll in for the arsenal .

  19. Thanks for not adding to the doom out there YW. Wenger has said he is ‘not necessarily’ replacing Freddie but ‘it’s too early to tell’. He just wants to see how the current bunch deal with things, which is what pre-season is for. I’m sure he has someone in mind if he decides he needs another player, but he won’t want to panic buy.

I thought Eduardo, Diaby and Hleb played very well. Rosicky also looked good before he went off. People who criticise Hleb either know nothing about football, didn’t actually watch the game or are so prejudiced against him that they cannot see when he played well. It was his drive into the box and pull back to Eduardo that should have resulted in a goal. It was definitely the best opportunity we created.

The team seemed to lose shape and purpose when Diaby went off (much like the CC final). He could really press on this season. Those who criticise him for fouling too much need to remember how many times PV4 got booked and sent off. It’s early pre-season and Diaby is still finding his timing, so give him a break.

As for the defence – they were clearly tired by the end. Not only are Salzburg ahead of them in terms of match fitness, but they also had 4 fresh players who had just come onto the pitch. Gallas and Toure were also not meant to play together so I think Wenger is looking at either Djourou/Gallas or Toure/Senderos partnerships at the back. Shame about Djourou’s injury but at least the last minute substitution was not because he came back to the UK to join Birmingham on loan. That would be a big mistake.

  20. Flint McCullough

    Loosen up Heavy-

The idea of the match was a fitness excersise for 11-16 players against decent opposition – not to win at any cost.

Maybe you didn’t want to see Hleb go past 3 players to serve up the best chance of the match for Bentner/Dudu?

  21. On the evidence of last night’s match nothing has magically changed in the close season. Whatever the comparative states of fitness between the two teams we can still make a judgement on how we will play this year. Oh Dear! We still try to pick a way through the congested middle of the park. We have no width – Eboue a wide man? Please! We miss the chances we create. We can’t defend crosses into the box for toffee. We give the Captain’s arm-band to pacify whoever is most likely to leave. We’ve acquired a third Kamikaze goalkeeper. Our manager believes there are no problems. Any moment now Wenger will say we’re not in transition! Deja vu – don’t you just love it?

  22. Hleb was man of the match. I can’t believe people won’t get off the bandwagon of flame for him.

I thought Dudu did pretty well and so did Rosicky til he got injured.

Not much to say about the others but Eboue was rubbish on the right wing.

  23. Matt Windmill

Oh my god – for all of those who say Hleb played well last night –

    YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL

    He was useless!

All he does if give the ball away by trying to make passes that are not on…

Theo looked bright in pre-season, but we desperately need a wide player who can make the difference in games – a la Ronaldo…

That is where tight games are won and lost…

  24. Eddy: Fabianksi has shown to be a really good goalkeeper and the goal was nothing he could’ve done about it. He did well to close down the striker – not his fault gallas deflected the shot home.

  25. Matt: When exactly did Hleb give away the ball??

I counted twice in the match. I counted 18 misplaced passes by Diaby so why not flame him?

    You know nothing.

  26. I know it’s pre-season but I’m worried already.

Rosicky as much as I like him is always injured. He needs cover or replacing, bring in a world class winger or a great prospect. Robinhio/Drenthe.

Eboue is not a winger and nor is Hleb, Bring in a world class winger we already have the prospect.
    Quaresma/Walcott.

This way we have cover and class from day one, and we’ll always get injuries.

Diaby is a defensive midfielder, or attacking at best and I rate him, he is not however a winger or a forward, leave him where he is.

Randall and Song are not good enough and should not be in the squad.

We’ve lost from last season – Freddie. Thierry, Aliadiare and one of Baptista/Reyes.

We’ve brought in one – Eduardo.

Sagna was brought in to add to our already fine collection of right backs, Hoyte, Eboue and Gilbert, so I’m a little surpriised at that purchase.

So in my mind we have not replaced 3 first choice first teamers.

So why is Wenger saying he may not replace Freddie?

    beyond me!

Oh and he rewards Gallas’s big mouth comments with the captaincy… words fail me.

  27. People are hanging to straws Hleb and Diaby our main men now. Bring on song and lupoli, oh his gone. Eboue had a couple of good CL games and now his the new R. Carlos, give me a break. Could it just be that alot of these players played hot when they had to either prove that they could be a 1st teamer, or were looking over their shoulder.

The players know, have boots will play, no real comp for places. Don’t get me wrong both good players but def starters not for me. Their good because we don’t have much. Wow, heaven forbid Fabs can’t play 70 games this season.

  28. Matt Windmill

Farrukh – if you are sad enough to count completed passes you need to get out more…

Hleb does – and consistently – gives the ball away in dangerous areas – PSV in the CL at home??

When does he ever add anything to the team???

I would rather start the season with Rosicky on the left – please god let him clear up these injuries – and Walcott on the right – at least he looks a dangerous.

    Hleb is truly awful…

  29. Farrukh

Fabianksi looked like a cat on hot bricks – hardly a re-assuring pressence for his, already, nervous back four. His charge to give away a free-kick for hand-ball was the stuff of nightmares. If you’re happy with that, fine. I’m not!

  30. Matt: We were talking about the match yesterday you chump and he performed well.

Counting is not sad; it’s intelligence. Bringing up the past when we’re talking about the present is sad.

I take it you didn’t see Hleb take on 3 players and set up the chance of the match?

Did you even watch the game?

    Chump.

  31. I heard his no called wise words

Lets just hope that next season the league is cut down to the top 10 teams then

People bang on about ‘well we were without our top two strikers for most of last season’

Well what if that happens again, what happens in September if Van Persie does a Cruciate and Dudu pulls a Hamstring, suddenly we have Bendtner and Ade and no one on the bench.

What happens when Rosicky gets injured, we seem to resort to playing Denilson and Flamini out of position to effectively become a Defensive right midfielder which is great to do in the last 15 mins when you are two nil up but now from the start.

I admit Hleb did play well last night, and maybe given this period of tryouts we should play him on the Left and see if he becomes the player we hoped for. we are still woefully short in this area.

I have said on here before we are 2-3 players short of mounting a serious challenge, however without them we cant cope with key injuries and the gap between 4th and the clubs in 5th and 6th is not that great now.

I think we are covered in GK,LB,CB,CB,RB,CM,CM,STKR

but we need 2 wingers and a class forward.

You call us doom mongerers and I too called people the same two years ago, but we have made the same comments going into the last two seasons and have been unfortunately proved right and I for one am getting a bit tired of the same ‘we showed great spirit’ crap

  32. Matt Windmill

LOL – chump – nice intelligent response Farrukh…

I made reference to the past as Hleb was as good last night as he always is – and that is very poor.

If you think he is good enough to play for Arsenal then feel free to go to the game with his name on your back and cheer him on – i think you will be in the minority.

he was poor last night – and if you think otherwise then it is you who is the ‘chump’.

  33. Oh and can anyone understand ‘Reyes’ Logic

When the Lyon Rumours came out, I thought ok they are CL every year, but the French League is probably the 5th Strongist in Europe, not really worthy of his talent.

Yet his Agent says after Real, they are his priority

Is London that bad? Henry isnt here to bully him anymore so it must be the weather, what a unambitious poof

He has the chance to come back in and despite the crap that he has spouted I know it is the Arsenal way to cheer his name when he plays, he could become the big fish alongside VP, not only that but it two birds with one stone as he can play wide left, Right or centrally up front

What a shame, oh but its ok cause Eboue can be converted :)

  34. You’re obviously in the minority as you are the only person who believes he was poor last night.

    Chump.

  35. Matt Windmill

Read the trail back you fool…..

Apply some intelligence before you start writing and calling people silly names and using words like ‘flame’…

    idiot

  36. Obviously you’re not intelligent enough to understand flame you muppet. Shut up and go cry to your mummy.

  37. Matt Windmill

    LOL – maybe i will!

Pick up a dictionary and look up the word flame – and see how it works in your sentence….

    inarticulate fool

  38. Matt windmill, I think Hleb was in our top 3 players last night. He has issues with shooting and despite what he says I dont see him ever topping 5 goals a season. But his passing and build up play is amongst the best in the team. last season he was overused. he got very tired second half of the season due to lack of depth in his position. we can learn from that mistake.
If only he could shoot like Ribery from distance then we’d be sorted.

  39. Yogi – try and get a reality check

this team is nowhere near winning any trophies

    come back to earth ..

AW is stubborn and the market has moved away from him ..

I am not denying that he knows how to build up young players, but there is more to winning than developing young potential talent

I am becoming more bearish by the day ..first his comments about over inflated transfers, then the 1-0 loss to an AUSTRIAN side .. hello .. where is the safety net?

  40. One things that Hleb doesn’t offer is crossing. If he did this, he’d be a damn good winger. He plays too narrow, although yes, he did play pretty well last night.

  41. Patthegooner: You make some valid points and tend to agree with most of what you state.

I remain positive MOST of the time but have to confess despite having confidence in AW(most of the time) I find it difficult to work out what he is trying to achieve.

I understand the rebuilding process and as a fan we have to accept that this takes time. But it is the shape of the team that concerns me and nearly every other person. Its glearingly obvious that we need 1 possibly 2 quality wide players that provide thrust, penetration and will chip in with a fair share of goals. Both Hleb and Rosicky are not wide players and while I rate Rosicky his inability to remain fit for more than a handful of games is a massive concern. People criticise Hleb, I wouldn’t say he is terrible although some of his performances were towards the end of last season. He is simply not in the same league as Ronaldo, Robben, Joe Cole and others in the top 4. For my mind he makes a very useful squad player.

The squad is wearing thiner and thiner and becoming less and less experienced (in terms of older players out/ young players in) yet on the face of it we don’t seem to be interested in signing any new players. It just seems to me so obvious that we need to buy. So why don’t we?

I am absolutely convinced money is there if needed! So why does AW not go and get the wide players that this team so desperately needs? Could it be that AW is so obsessed in nurturing and developing the young potentials and turning them into world class players that he is prepared to risk a short term fix for long term success? It may be that he is happy to see all the other teams spend millions trying to out do each other financially while he continues to work with the young players perhaps content with 4th or even 5th place for now but knowing the experience they will gain over the next 1 or 2 years will turn them into genuine title contenders. Being the prudent and economics degree educated manager that he is, well aware that not only will we have the title challenging team we all desire but also have the benefit of having a pot of cash in the bank.

If that being the case then I would prefer he lost his obsession for developing the young players and become a bit more obsessed in winning trophies!

Never the less I trust him.

  42. I feel the same JJ, I trust wenger and I know he wants the best but I cant help feeling his experiment can be taken a little too far. If he developed 16 of the 22 players in the first team squad i’d be delighted but to bring in 5 or 6 world class additions in troublesome areas of the team would see a good team change into a great team. I beleive we are a few players away from being the best in England and as you say all the evidence point to money being there so I am very confused why wenger wants to be so stubborn and have so much faith in a team that has finished fourth 2 seasons running.
Of course I know that a big new signing might not mean we win the title, but come on if we are honest do we really have a chance of winning the title this season as it stands?

  43. BB

This is pre-season, third game in. Some of them have been training for two weeks. What do you expect? If they were ready to go straight away on their return, there would be no pre-season. And that is the point. It is still fine tuning. That’s the reality check that needs to be applied.

    YW

  44. Yogi

By all means clutch at the straw of lack of fitness – but it isn’t the issue. It’s the manner and style of play. I saw little last night that suggested we have evolved since last season or the season before that. We still lack width. Our defence of crosses is abject. We miss the chances we create. Le Boss comes out and says ‘We should have won’. What’s new?Throughout last season we gave away goal after goal because we lacked a dominant (in the air) centre half. Last night we looked like headless chickens – no pun intended – whenever a high ball came in. What has that got to do with lack of fitness?

  45. Come on relax. As Yogi has said this is pre season and an opportunity to tune up fitness. While we don’t often lose pre season games, they have not ever had particular relevance. Wenger is a master of timing pre-season, though the champions league qualifiers have proved disruptive to those plans in the past. We will finish in the top 2!!

  46. Flint McCullough

“not only will we have the title challenging team we all desire but also have the benefit of having a pot of cash in the bank”

That sums it up & will certainly do for me.

There will always be a few bumps on the way but why not show some patience & enjoy the ride?

  47. What good does “cash in the bank do you”? I’m scratching my head to remember when a bank balance won you anything. Title challenging? On last night’s showing definitely not!

  48. Yogi, Danny, Flint,

We are not far off your thoughts, we know the bulk of the squad is well covered and is developing well but all the best pre-season in the world is going to change the fact that we are critically short of Wide Players and a Striker

Attempts to turn Eboue into a Wide player are not working, nor are switching attacking midfielders like Hleb and Rosicky.
And when those guys get injured it gets worse when we start games with Denilson and Flamini on the Wings, that wouldn’t put the fear of god into Macclesfield let alone Man Utd.

I was prepared to let Wenger carry on in the knowledge that surely he would buy in at least 1 class Winger, but his comments seem to point towards internal player position conversion and it wont work!!

I am seriously worried guys, I used to be in the Arsene Knows brigade but the last two seasons have actually shown that maybe he doesnt.

Can you honestly say that you are 100% confident that we will stay in that top 4

  49. EatSleepFootball have shown that they are on the cutting edge of Football Journalism

    http://www.eatsleepsport.com/news_details.aspx?story_id=601546&l_id=1&t_id=1

Maybe they have been doing the sleep thing for the last week

  50. Pat 100% is never going to be possible but i am wholly confident we will finish top 4 and believe strongly we can break back into the top 2. I share your concerns with the wing position but not at all with the need for another striker. And if Wenger says he’s wont sign anyone you should know by now he probably will. Not that he has said that. Lets keep the toys in the pram and give the youngsters another year. Not while moaning but while fully supporting them.

  51. Danny

Believe me despite my moans, I will be up there this weekend giving them 110%

but I am not going to blow smoke up Wengers arse when he doesnt deserve it, he is gambling with the club I love

And please dont take that as fickle, I agree that Wenger has done more for this club that any other Manager but in the last two years he has gambled and got it wrong, and I dont want him to make the same mistake for the third year running

  52. Come on Pat you know as well as me, that gambling is the exact opposite of what he has done. Gambling is taking high cost transfer risks. Arsene has invested in the long term, balanced the needs of the team with a undeniably sizeable debt. The only gamble has been the stadium and since then he has played a low risk game. The question is while protecting the economic stability of the club, is he able to mount a serious title challenge. If anyone can, Arsene can!

  53. Just watched the highlights and thought Bendtner played well all be it a little cautious, Diaby will be the talk of the premier league if he keeps improving at the same rate. And Denilson had the balls to have a pop at goal when he could, Eboue needs to use the grey matter (Hoyte is a better thinker and seems to learn from his mistakes) a bit more. Agree with most of the previous analysis and this team must settle quickly with each other to threaten the top 2 places , injuries are my concern and I hope no more players go out on loan for the moment.

  54. I hope you are right Danny

And this is where we go round in circles, cause I honestly believe if we buy a World Class Winger and a World Class Striker, we would challenge, I would actually like two wingers

Look what two great players would do to the team

    Lehmann
    Clichy
    Gallas
    Toure
    Sagna
    Fabregas
    Diaby
    Robinho
    Walcott
    Van Persie
    Anelka

    Subs
    Dudu
    Rosicky
    Djourou
    Fabianski
    Denilson

Everyone has their own names in mind. We have the money, how can doing something like this not improve our chances of cementing 4th and going for 1st. Suddenly we have a strong bench and still have Ade, Senderos, hleb etc as squad members

  55. Not my choices Pat and you dont have to convince me we have the makings of a very good side who’s youth could soon be a massive plus. Can the boss and the team convince themselves? I see the need for a goalscoring winger but am completely convinced the striking department is full. If we can find exceptional quality at great value then Wenger will move. The “we have money” claim is debatable, we have the most significant debt so being shrewd can’t hurt!

  56. Agreed Danny

The optimistic side to me is saying he is waiting for the Reyes deal to go through, then he is going to put all his cash in for one blinding saviour.

Robinho was not my first choice, I wanted Malouda or Ribery. If I was being honest and given the funds I would get two for the price of one, namely Wright-Phillips and Di Maria.

My Striker worries would be alleviated by the Wingers. My worry is that Walcott is currently a winger, which leaves 4 Strikers, one is a kid and one is off to ANC. I know Theo can play up front if needed but if Rosicky or Hleb are injured we are straight back where we were last year, and sometimes that involved Freddie up front and Defensive players on the wing which does not suit our game..

Looking forward to the weekend again though, especially seeing Dudu, I think you can get more of a feel of a truly class player in person.

  57. Just cant see Robinho as a realistic target. Think Wenger might chuckle and that one! Real would charge a ridiculous fee and i dont see us about to break our transfer record at the moment. I too am just crossing my fingers that Eduardo can be another “super” class find for the man who regularly pulls rabbits out his hat. Pat we agree on some things but while i am optimistic on what Wenger can produce you are optimistic on the amount of money that our club can afford to outlay!

  58. If that is the case Danny you have to question the Board,

Why would they come out and say we are in the best shape ever and funds are available

Also Wenger knows the Market, why would he say he is after a Super Player, he knows how much they would cost.

Either way we find out on the 31st August.

  59. Not sure the board could say anything else Pat. Our board or indeed any other big clubs board. Just believe at this time for the club, there could be no better man at the helm.

  60. It looks like the Di Maria hoax may be double-bluffed

There are a lot of links for this, the difference being that the player is quoted this time, although the Sun don’t give a source.

Some other links to the same story say he will be loaned out for a year, but given our need and the players quality I am not sure about that. I am sure if it is true then we could get him on the same kind of visa as Song.

Still he is young and would this solve our width issue?

He has serious quality, I watched him a few times in the U-20 tournament in Canada. Hopefully he can settle in quickly.

Follow this up with Wright-Phillips and I am happy
