Palacio & Friendlies

The papers are reporting that Rodrigo Palacio is winging his merry way to Arsenal for a fee of £15m. And the comments I’ve read seem strangely subdued about it, the press are all rather excited though and given that it distracts them from Fabregas and Wenger departure stories, I guess it should be welcomed. There is a fair amount of cynicism about the veracity of the story with fingers being pointed at the Boca Juniors Blog which started it all off; little bits to embellish it are appearing here and there but given those sources are not reliable either. The thing that strikes me is that the majority are completely underwhelmed by it all, probably because few actually know anything of the player other than his stats. Tomorrow will be an interesting day, press-wise; the signing either goes ahead or they go quiet, media admission of being tucked up like a kipper by a rumour. We shall see. The final thing that does not make sense is that he is another striker. We already have four at the Club with Walcott as a notional fifth forward so that would mean we were top heavy unless Wenger genuinely has no intention to use Walcott as a front man.

The Barnet game is still getting attention although events on the pitch are being outshone by Le Boss’s comments that the forwards will have to step up to take responsibility for replacing Henry’s goals. Interestingly he is not singling one out to make up the deficit, rather arguing that they all share that burden which hints heavily at a rotation policy up front, perhaps even more regularly than we would ordinarily expect. Judging by the Copa America, he must be wondering whether or not it is worth giving The Beast another chance; three in three although some of the defending by their opponents was woeful. To be fair to the player though, the opener in last night’s final was a cracker, one of the reasons why Arsene chased him in the first place. I think it was Pat who questioned in yesterday’s comments about why Baptista could not have been scoring like that for us last season; I would have been happy with another dozen that went in off his shin as they did the other night.

Back to the forwards. Yet again Adebayor is being criticised for his performance which I find odd. Well, no, I don’t find it odd as I think he is the sort of player who will be appreciated by most people but those who do not like, won’t change their minds irrespective of what he does. What I don’t understand though is why a performance in the first pre-season friendly is being taken seriously. The match is all about working towards match fitness not being at the peak of match fitness now. I don’t want a forward scoring twenty goals in the friendlies; I want that in the season. Generally speaking, the opposition are either weaker or in the same level of fitness training as yourselves. The important thing about these games are not the results; it is getting fit and getting them over and done with, free of injuries (or long term ones at least).

It may be that tomorrow, there will be some evidence of the transfer of Palacio or it will go completely quiet. Whichever, ’til then.

Responses

  1. I find it funny that a story first reported on a blog has made its way to the Sun who have reported it as an exclusive. I wont believe it until the club announce it, and i wont expect to see a response from the club until they do sign him. Probobly all horseshit though/

  2. I think it is just some blogger having a laugh.

In the event AW does sign another striker I think Eduardo will play left wing.

  3. I know nothing about Palacio – is he a ’striker’ in the Pires or Messi sense? At 5′ 9″ he doesn’t seem the archetypal front man. I can’t imagine any new signing until or unless the Reyes/Ljungberg issues are concluded.

Interesting to note also in todays papers, especially given some of the comments on yesterdays piece, that TH may not have left for entirely football reasons after all.

  4. I’m not too confident on this rumour. But I think arsenal DO require another striker – Henry, Ali, Beast out Bendtner & Dudu in.

That’s one down on last season when we were shown to be clearly a striker or two short when we had injuries to RVP and TH14. Ade will be away for up to a month (presuming he sorts out his pay dispute) so further cover I think is a must.

  5. I think blogs talking about how you need to be careful of blogs as sources for information is quite funny, to be honest…

  6. if wenger keeps piling strikers and central midfielders into the squad I really cant see only Hleb and Rosicky ever playing out wide. surely some of these players are being bought to play out wide.
any of Eduardo, RVP, Walcott or Eboue could play on the wing , and I suspect there are others.

I am also sceptical about Palacio rumours. But apparantly the Boc Juniors chairman said “those cheap a** pussies at the Nou Camp can f*** to h***. Arsenal have tabled a bid and we have accepted it. The player will have a medical with them soon”.

there’s something about that statement that makes me suspicious.

  7. Judging Baptista, or any player for that matter, just based on performances in a knockout tournament is always unwise. In a couple of CC games for us last season he also looked a world beater. I have no doubt that he is a good player but we need those that can perform in the more mundane games.

  8. RobM – blogs can be sources of information yes, but they are more a forum for opinions. To rely on a blog for official club business is a bit dodgy. Everyone can say they heard from a good source or an insider at the club and run a “story” about this or that. Transfer speculation being the most commented on topic everyone will eat it up and comment. Just look at us !

  9. Gazzap, they took that from wikipedia, where some joker was having a laugh. Of course its been removed now, what I find funny is that someone keeps posting on that site that he is due in tomorrow for a medical but the administrators of the site then remove it. Its almost become a battle!!

I think this one is bulls*** & seriously cannot believe Arsenal would spend 15 million on this bloke, especially as you would have to ask if he would even qualify for a work permit as he has only appeared 4 times for argentina.

  10. gazzap

Apparently, the Palacio ‘deal’ is one of the reasons why Edmilson is being released on a free – as well as his knee-knack – as Barcelona’s ‘foreigner’ quota is stretched to its limit.

    YW

  11. Ashburton

The work permits are a piece of p*ss for football clubs; they apply normally, get rejected, appeal using the ‘exceptional talent’ route and get in. Wenger is a past master at it; Eboue and, I think, Toure both got in via that route.

    YW

  12. Seems to me AW plans to play three up front with RvP and Silva either side of Adebayor. Width can come from the full backs.

I received an e-mail inviting me to choose my season ticket on saturday. I thought it was a wind up as I was told last season I was number 11,107th! Has there been a collapse in season ticket sales?

  13. Baptista’s goal was good, but he still showed his ’second touch is a tackle’ characteristic many times later in the match.

  14. Eboue got in because he married a Belgian girl. Toure was a regular in the national side. The only one that has actually qualified under the exceptional talent rule was Denilson. Even Vela couldn’t come under that.

Man Utd only got a work permit for Anderson because he was in the brazil squad for this tournament. It was rejected at first but Man utd argued successfully that he would have reached the required games after the tournament & that he was young so couldn’t have expected to have played all the games. I’m not sure he even appeared but this Palacio is 25 & played very few minutes in the whole tournament so I don’t see him being granted one.

  15. On the Rodrigo Palacio signing I think this is sun BS but if this is true i agree with you Yogi we would have a surplus of strikers, and maybe walcott or brentner will have to go on loan or EDS or Walcott to play a wide role?

Yogi I am one of Adebayors biggest criticts because i think he can play SOOOOO much better for arsenal if he improved of a few technical sides of his game like first touch and finishing, his movement is excellent and has the physical attributes to be an immense striker.

  16. i dont think AW will spend 15m on this unknown striker.

  17. according to football database he is half spanish and already has an EU passport so wont need any work permit.
    http://www.footballdatabase.com/index.php?page=player&Id=6481&pn=Rodrigo_Sebasti&

but if denilson got one then surely others would as well??

  18. Silver

You only have to look at his time at the Club to see Adebayor has improved; he needs to be given the encouragement his efforts deserve. Come on he was the only striker we had in 2007 post January. If he had been given decent support or been able to forge a partnership with anyone, the return would have been better.

I think that given a consistent run in the side this season, you would see the improvement you want.

    YW

  19. I like Ade. He puts 100% into every game. He doesnt hide either if he isnt having the best of games, he will continue to show for the ball and continue to try make things happen. He is still only 23 so his improvement should continue. Id say he should be good for 15 league goals this season and quite a few assists too.

  20. gazzap

Denilson would be easier to argue as he is captain of Brazil at the younger level and has been for a while.

    Ashburton

He’s used the Exceptional Talent on Reserve players before, not just Denilson.

    YW

  21. Re Adebayor:
For a player who came in with rumoured past disciplinary issues, his workrate and attitude last season were both commendable. Yes, he could and should have scored more goals, and he certainly needs to do that this season on, but he has earned the right, in my opinion, to patience and faith, for the time being atleast.

  22. Come on, they are coy coz they are stll smarting from the shame Brazil’s easy win against Argies prved that they actually no better than any armchair pundit like you and me. First, they said Agies were technically superior than Brassa which did’nt really look to be true and Brassa tought us a lesson in endurance.

It reminded me the Arsenal that beat Juve and Real. Kids who got stuck in when defending and were not bad on the bal when attacking. Not relying on any 1 individual. I love my team and I can see the same mentality comming good next season

  23. not sure bout those work permits Yogi.

That’s why the African lads go and play for the Belgians. So we can either get them time in their national side or (completely speculative) exploit some Belgian passport law. I will be very surprised if this story is true, certainly at that price from the South American market he would have to be an absolute World-Beater. Wenger would not overpay for a player from the french league. With all this in mind, i do still fancy Wenger is lining up one more. Has anyone seen what Myle Palmer said about Wenger looking tired and unwell at the Barnet game, has he seen the interview. Wenger looked pleased to be back, ready for some jousting, maybe even slightly tanned. Though, if he’s managed to leave the house and drag himself away from some random tournament on Eurosport i’ll be very surprised. Good to see him back!

  24. Gazzap, if he has a spanish passport then thats fair enough it won’t be a problem him coming.

As for the exceptional talent thing, I doubt a 25 year old would qualify. If his country don’t deem him good enough to be an international regular then he cannot be an ‘exceptional talent’. Denilson was different as he is only young but was also the captain of the Brazilian u19 team, therefore coupled with his countries standing in the game he certainly deserved one.

  25. Edmilson couldn’t join us because he couldn’t get a work permit, neither could Ronaldinho. Edu was ok as he had a european relative or something but Silvinho didn’t (he was quickly sold off when it appeared his passport could be a fake) & Celta registered him as a non EU player. I seriously cannot think of any players that have qualified without being international regulars or having family in europe. Youngsters are different but this guy isn’t young for a footballer.

  26. a word of warning on the exceptional talent permit? how do you think we got a permit for song?

  27. Arsenal also play in the Argentinian league.

    http://www.celesteyrojo.com.ar/Page.php?pg=Principal.php

It could be them bidding for Palacio

  28. yes I think I heard song was brought in using the exceptional talent rule. It makes a mockery of it really. if you want the permit then it should be that that player has to play x percent of games for the first team within 18 months of joining the club if aged over 18. I dont see how any club could ever prove that a young player (under 19) can be an exceptional talent. its a matter of opinion and they cant really have the stats to back up that opinion. what do performances for an under 18 team actually mean? Song was probably the best player in his under 18 team. the whole thing is daft anyway. I understand that in the economy as a whole we cant just let every foreigner in, but I do think football is different. that is probably why whenever english teams apply for the special talent route, they are successful.

  29. Good point rellends

We did get song on an Exceptional Talent

As for Palacio, I think this is hilarious. I caught onto the Boca Juniors blog yesterday morning and it has been mad ever since. It is worth a look just for Comedy Value, it is their Blog and we have invaded it.

This is the page that started it

    http://bocajnews.blogspot.com/

And then the Arsenal er i mean Boca Juniors Blog

    http://www.topix.net/forum/world-soccer/boca-juniors/TMTGVLFBLNLDMDAR9/p4#lastPost

now if this is true then fair one, but I would laugh if the Gutter Press are now basing Exclusives on Blogs and Wikipedia and the content does indicate that this is what happened. In Fact they have almost just Copy and Pasted it out of his Wiki Page……Hilarious

  30. Yeah Patthegooner, top notch journalism right there.

  31. Id like to think that Palacio would be our next signing ,
da silva and walcott will do there time on the wings ,like henry
and why not ! they will give us a pace injection down both flanks and eboue will probly move to a right midfeild role -when he gets a game .
read this sagna link it hints eboues new role and if its on ARSENAL .COM it must be true ! those nazis dont print anything that might come under the spot light.

    http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=news&article=476717&cpid=703&title=%27He+is+technically+sound+and+tactically+astute%27

1 thing is for sure Palacio if not scalped by us ,he will prob’ly find his way to the EPL (inferior epl managers like sven, moron’o will probly pounce on him ), just like babel and malouda rumours prior.
both of them linked to us .. both unsigned by us.both then targeted by others. I wouldnt be supprised if it was just some blogger rumour gone ballistic, as funnily enough we are bidding against a barca target .. co-incidence?

He is the quality that is needed ,still a bit of a future player
not sure how much of an impact he will make in his 1st season .
but his quality is undeniable, if he’s like the other argentines it will take a while to gel in the EPL. But he’s being touted as the new number 1 striker of argentina.
and thats a good replacement for henry !

baptista also shows you what i was saying yesterday about our youngsters last season not supplying the ball
correctly upfeild(lacking the experience), which frustrated henry- is prob’ly affecting freddies preformances , and definately showed you that baptista is still very much quality player if supported by a reasonable midfeild with some experience .

  32. Has anyone actually seen this Palacio over a period of time??

People like ethan seem to be raving about him, yet I have seen loads of comments along the lines of “he’s a poor man’s michael owen”. The youtube clips look pretty good, but I learn’t long ago not to base anything on those.

Personally I cannot comment on him, as until saturday night I’d never heard of him, let alone seen him!

  33. Ethan

    >He is the quality that is needed
    >still a bit of a future player
    >not sure how much of an impact he will make in his 1st >eason .
    >but his quality is undeniable

snipped bits out but on what do you base this? Is it youtube (please God, no) or have you seen him in action regularly? Anywhere that you can point us to so that we can become more informed on our supposed target.

    YW

  34. i live in canada, and their is a show that airs a lot of argentine football, and ive heard his name, he is good. He is one of the best , if not the best striker in argentina.

  35. I havent seen Palacio so i cant really comment. I doubt we will be signing him though. Just the way the story broke, i dont buy it.

As for Baptista. That was probably the one good thing he did all game. Fair enuff it was really good but he reverted to what we saw of him in an arsenal shirt. His control was poor most of the time, he lost it quite a lot and his passes were not up to scratch.

And as for the midfield not supplying the ball. Rosicky, Hleb and Cesc have a great final ball but i just dont think Baptista settled into the team. A second season may have changed that, but i guess we will never know.

  36. Nothing new on Palacio…I can see that even the argentinean press refer to the Sun article !….I guess either it is confirmed tomorrow or it will die

  37. I agree with DeiseGooner Baptista is a ronirozenthal type of player can do one amazing thing and people start thinking he is the best thing since sliced bread, his touches were poor his passes were poor, good bye and good luck….

Palacio appears to be an excellent player with a really good scoring record in Argentina 39 in 79 apps for boca.

But we know this media hype will never amount to anything i mean look at the romours Anelka, Martins, Teves, Babel, Trezeguet and these are the ones i can remeber….

We just need another World class attacking player wither a goal scoring midfielder or striker.

  38. Transfers!! This part of the season is where the newspapers like to sell silly stories to increase their readership…that dear friends is it.

We are linked with every player under the sun looking for an increase in wages just like every other EPL (big club). Look no further than Mr Babel, I would love to go to Arsenal…wow Liverpool want me, great they are a huge club I have followed for ever!!

Really, I leave it to the man to decide (Wenger) and for all hacks out there to complain about! Arsenal are a well run club and if that means for a period of time we are not the cream of the crop so be it but the fact is we will still be here in 20 years…I am not so confident of some of the others.

I shall wear the red & white for life because unlike any player we support the club.

  39. sure YW

    http://www.football-lineups.com/players/player.php?route=4155

also if any of you download games via torrent files you can check out the germio V boca game played on the 13-6 where he scores in the 19th minute ..

    http://www.isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=boca+juniors

youll need some client to get the game ..
unless you get pirate cable from asia :) downloading the game would be my only suggestion .other than the dreaded youtube.

i do like boca juniors they are a good team and prob’ly the best to watch in Argentine Primera División . i cant say he would be my 1st choice .but he can play on either wing and up front so im sure that would be a reason why the arse is interested in him . to be honest id rather get someone more tried and tested in the EPL . but i think wenger is on the right track .
he s 25 and has experience and is a true utlility player. that was my prior point !
i think from knowing the players style
it wouldnt be out of the question that this rumour could become a reality (a wenger style target). but even if it is so .. Is barca going to come back with a larger offer . ?

As for Ashburton Gooner anyone with more experience than
what we have would be a bonus ! hes older than anyone in the front line, can play in several areas like sagna . maybe arsene is getting players who can cover more positions .
it makes the team more flexible .. and from this angle i can see why he is a rumoured target ..

I think we need to lift the quality all over , but if you want an argentine with class messi would make a difference .
but as they say its CASHBURDEN GRAVE that buried us !
id like to sign kaka . but we can all dream ..

maybe we can swap fabs for kaka .
    now theres a thought !

  40. Palacio looks more in the mould of Eduardo .. he’s fast, poaches goals and dribbles. I don’t see why wenger would need 2 players who offer the same.

More like a passing rumor trying to raise his value and get big money outta some club .. m sure liverpudlians would follow .. :)

    http://desigooner.blogspot.com

  41. Heh. Liverpool for sure. At least Arsenal.com is churning out some good stuff, for once.

Pigs might fly? Make’s a refreshing change: http://tinyurl.com/2ssfvz

  42. Ha Ha

THe Sun did indeed write an exclusive from a Blog, Quality, they should refund everyone

Here is the link from the Players Agent, he was as shocked as anyone,

    http://translate.google.com/translate?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eminutouno%2ecom%2f1%2fhoy%2farticle%2fEl%2dempresario%2dDepietri%2dneg%25C3%25B3%2del%2dpase%2dde%2dPalacio%255Eid%5f38280%2ehtm

    Now that is funny

  43. “going to travel to London to be put under the medical examination of rigor.”

Google, be still my beating heart.

  44. [...] Palacio & Friendlies The papers are reporting that Rodrigo Palacio is winging his merry way to Arsenal for a fee of £15m. And the comments […] [...]

  45. Final Proof guys

Brilliant, I bet the Sun dont print this though

    http://bocajnews.blogspot.com/

But i bet the mirror and the star do

  46. That boca blog has confirmed it was all a wind up anyway. Not really sure what they were actually trying to achieve as I don’t think most people believed them anyway. Arsenal are pretty much the one club you can gurantee the fans won’t believe signings are happening until the player is pictured at the Emirates with his new shirt. It may get people talking but just reading the many various comments its pretty clear most didn’t take it that seriously. However if thats what turns these blog writers on then thats their choice, I suppose!!

  47. Patthegooner, they were trying to wind up arsenal fans not the media. However the always gullible sun newspaper fell for it!! I don’t see the point of it myself, after all anyone can start a rumour & of course it will get people talking or looking at the player, it doesn’t mean they believe it though!! Seems like a complete waste of time & effort to me!!

  48. A waste of time and effort it certainly was, funny however that that rag bought it. Hope it sold a few copies for them. Really goes to show how desperate the media are to fill out their sports pages. Football sells, even if it is lies. Probably especially so…

  49. If the papers only printed the truth about football clubs & players with real inside information (which they rarely get), then they wouldn’t even be able to fill one sports page daily. Of course that means they have to make stuff up, but its the people that buy it, they continually make them do it. People are laughing at the sun newspaper, but in truth they probably sold an extra few thousand copies yesterday on the back of their exclusive!! So whilst they may look a little silly I bet they don’t care in the slightest!!

  50. Oh no doubt it helped them sell their rag, and yes that will just give the license to continue with the bullshit stories, thats the sad truth. I hear Pennant has been nicked once again, the tit.

  51. Ashburton Gooner

Complete wast of time and effort: Probably

But the reason I find it funny is because the likes of the Sun and the Evening Standard fell for it. I havent bought the Sun since the Vieira affair some years back when they almost single handedly forced the guy out through in-correct rumours and I am pleased that they have been shown to be nothing more than a Printed out Blog. I imagine the guy who went with the story is getting ribbed today.

But we all know that there are Fans out there that hold out for that kind of Exclusive story and some even go out and get a shirt Printed (Does anyone know anyone who works in the Armoury, because I bet someone did), I hope they didn’t.

I think the guys that did this merely tried to point out to world how easy it is to get a Rumour aross to a Global Audience.

I do feel sorry for the Gooners abroad though. If you have English as a first Language it was easy to see that this whole Story was a bit fishy, especially when a quick search on Newsnow showed that there was no media outcry in Argentina. But the poor guys who dont have English as a First Language probably fell for this hook line and sinker.

They sum it up in the Blog

Dont Believe anything till its on Arsenal.com

  52. Patthegooner, I agree with you, fans shouldn’t believe anything they read until its become fact (as in on arsenal.com). However I think whilst the sun looks silly today it will all be forgotten tomorrow when no doubt their next exclusive comes out. What does annoy me though is that every blog (including the decent ones like this) lose credibility everytime some moron decides to take the p***. So should somebody actually get some genuine info they don’t bother telling people because they end up suffering untold abuse & are never believed anyway, & its all thanks to those idiots like Bocablog!!

  53. Ashburton

It was only the mass churn sites that took it seriously, most others were sceptical. I would agree with the comment that the papers were not the targets in the first place, it strikes me as being more aimed at those Arsenal fans desperate for a big money signing than anything else. That The Sun and others went for it was a happy by-product.

As for losing credibility, you assume we have some in the first place….

    YW
