It seems that the transfer of Bakari Sagna will be formalised over the next day or so, perhaps even by the time you read this. At the same time, reports are emerging that the Club is preparing to part company with Justin Hoyte, willing to listen to offers at around the £2m mark. Whilst I can see the logic in parting with one or maybe more of the four right backs that would be at Arsenal – Sagna, Hoyte, Gilbert and Eboue – the choice of Hoyte to leave seems a strange one. Of the two Englishmen, Hoyte is the more experienced so if these reports are true, it suggests that Gilbert is perceived as the better long term bet. The departure of Hoyte would also appear to cast doubt that Eboue is being earmarked as a potential right midfielder, competition for Walcott and Hleb. However, these reports have one dark cloud over them in that the player has signed a new long term contract earlier this year which seems on the face of it, to be at odds with the decision to dispense with his services. It would be somewhat disappointing if Hoyte did leave because I felt he had shown the potential to be a steady right back. It also seems to me that Eboue will need to show more concentration to justify his selection in that position, the lapses he was prone to last season will have to become a thing of the past.
Freddie Ljungberg has a couple of suitors and depending on which report you choose to believe, he will be plying his trade in Serie A or the Premiership. The Independent report that Fiorentina are putting together a deal with two sponsors to afford his reputed £70k per week salary whilst The Sun Says So It Must Be True believes that he is off to join Sven Goran Eriksson’s revolution at Manchester City, who it seems are willing to top the offer made to Arsenal by £500k, a fee of £6m being reported. His agent meanwhile is convinced that Arsenal want him to stay but that Freddie is frustrated by the lack of first team opportunities. No doubt there will be people who believe his departure is a sign of Wenger losing ‘it’ because another experienced player would be biting the dust. I guess the question that Freddie has to answer himself is whether he wants to play regularly and if so, can he make the wide midfield spot at Arsenal his own. Given that he tends to play for Sweden in a wide left role, I suppose he could fulfil that function for Arsenal but I will be surprised if he is at the Club next season. Sad as it is to see another stalwart of the successful years depart, I would rather he did so with fond memories in our heads than for him to leave with people wistfully remembering the good times as opposed to looking at his inclusion in the team as a sign of the dire straits injuries have left us in.
Despite claims to the contrary, it seems that Obefami Martins has not been in London for a medical but is in fact still in Nigeria. He is said to be waiting to speak with Sam Allardyce over his future and preparing to play in a friendly for Newcastle next week, although he would like to be in Cape Town the following night for a Nelson Mandela Tribute match so that appears to be in doubt. Reports suggest that Arsene has yet to decide whether or not to trigger the much fabled escape clause – media speak for ‘that big green meanie Arsene won’t tell us what he is planning to do so we’ll cover our Arsenal’s by laying the foundations for a story that he has rejected the player‘ – so we’ll just have to wait and see. It is a questionable signing in that he is not the wide left player that we seem to need to give balance. Given Arsene’s penchant for getting players used to the Premiership and its rigours by playing people on the wings, it would not surprise me however if Martins arrived and da Silva ended up provided service from the left, before moving into the centre in much the same manner that he introduced RvP into the first team. That is of course, if he has any intention of signing the Nigerian.
Finally, Tomas Rosicky has proven himself to be a ‘Glass is half full‘ kind of guy, being positive about the squad and it’s current state,
Of course, I know that Thierry Henry has left the club and that Eduardo has come in. Nevertheless, most of the players have remained and it is good news ahead of the new season. In the last season, our young team has been trying to reach the same tune. In the new season, we can move a step higher and profit from the previous one.
What a refreshing change. A senior pro (and his is in terms of the Arsenal squad) who seemingly is looking forward to the new season. Or is it someone who just has a better eye for PR than others…
’til Tomorrow.

Spot on Yogi, that’s exactly what it is with Tommy but nevertheless this is a great response from a seasoned player. I think on Bert’s return he will quickly follow suit in supporting further this young squad. What is worrying as this used to be the elder statesman in particular club captain’s first port of call in the midst of any negativity, steadying the ship. Maybe will can get back to those heady days with a united squad working together in the best interests of the club. Well done Tommy, hello Billy!

Eboue is on a completely different level to Hoyte and almost any other rightback in England except Micah Richards.
His errors have been greatly exxagerated, while the fantastic work he has done in stopping tricky wingers, and simultaneously bursting forward with great pace and crossing is forgotten.
Hoyte is only still here because he is English and a product of our academy. We will do well if Reading give us 2 million for him.

Good comments, whilst it will be very sad to see Freddie go (he has been a firm favourite of mine for years now.) 6mil is a lot of money for him. However I really hope he goes abroad as I would hate to see him in another prem teams colours.
Tommy is rapidly earning his Arsenal wings and is endearing himself to us gooners more and more with everything he says.
Maybe he should give Gallas some lessons in diplomacy!! Or better still hold the door open for the moaning git to leave all together!

I think there is one of two ways that an experienced player can go in these circumstances (i.e when they approach 30). They either adopt the mindset that this is their moment to mentor and be the one that the youngsters look up to (Bert). Or they go into a kind of panic where they think “oh my god, the career i thought was never going to end has only got 3/4 years left. I need to get some more medals so that when i retire i won’t regret it”. The latter mindset is clearly what the likes of Henry and Gallas are suffering from and highlights the fact that experienced players can become less team oriented and more indivdualistic as they get older. It’s for this reason that much more important than simple experience is having the right “team first” mentality in the players that we have in the squad.

Morning – nice article…..
i really hope Hoyte does not go – i rate him, also knowing how shrew the boss is he will probably turn Sagna into a CB – and then it is possible Senderos will leave
Dear old Freddie – hope he stays, but at his stage in his career no doubt will want to play regular footie, and i cant see him getting it, but who knows
Great to hear Tomas come out with a positive attitude, unlike Gallas who sometimes cheeses me off big time – out for half the season, didnt do a busting lot when he returned but so very negative – whydid we expect anything different.
Anyway – busy day ahead, and hope some news comes out soon
have a good one

Of all the rumours so far only Sagna seems to have any real substance to it. If he plays at RB, and knowing Wenger that has to be quite a big if, then one of Eboue and Hoyte will definitely go. Gilbert I think is probably already out as soon as another club is found. Hoyte seems to be the favourite to leave mainly because he has been back up for much of this season but then Eboue, at his age, is probably less likely to be prepared to play back up assuming Sagna at £7m is first choice. But then it all changes if, as is possible, Sagna may not be used in defense. This acquisition is not an easy one to understand.
Presumably, as has been the case all summer so far, the left midfield position, depends on the resolution of Reyes situation.
By: Amos on July 12, 2007

I don’t think that Hoyte is going anywhere and suspect that – given the iminent arrival of Sagna – the press have simply put two & two together and come up with six. Reading may be using the same set of calculations too.
If any of the full backs is likely to leave then Gilbert – who I liked the look of when he played in the first team – must be the favourite, unfortunately.
Hoyte will be kept as a utility defender for both of the full back positions, as well as 6th choice auxilary centre half in the event of an injury crisis in that position.
Arsene may like certain aspects of Obafemi Martins’ play, but I really can’t see him paying £13M for him.
Moreover, we know that, when it comes to speculating upon who Arsene is about to sign, the press simply don’t have a clue, so I would completely ignore the nonsense being written about Martins being lined up as our next striker.
I believe that Arsene is working on further departures – Reyes & Ljungberg & possibly Flamini too (despite his reported about
turn) – as well as further new signings and suggest that we exercise patience and keep the faith.

Well said Amos, strange signing especially when we have no depth in the left back position.
But Arsene knows.
I think that we will see a lot of fringe players leaviing in the next 3-4 weeks.
Reyes, Ljunberg, Hoyte, Gilbert, Song/Flamini, O’Cearuill.
But on a possitive note we should see over £15m roll in.

Great to read what Rosicky said, it’s been a while since someone actually said something true and nice about us. Wonder why the French players like Gallas, Anelka, Petit, Vieira and Henry always say they are “..well, I am happy, but not really happy with the new players..” at Arsenal. Are they expecting too much? Or are we really letting them down?
Perhaps they don’t realise it is a team game, and in a team game, you will never get the best 11 in every position in the world to play with you. You click with the rest of the team even though you think you are far better than the rest in the team. The challenge is in the gelling of the team where each one raises its game for the others. And if you have the best 11 in every position in the world playing for you, you will have other problems like egos.
I look forward to a greater challenge next season. At 12/1 I am putting a few grand on us. It is worth the while. Trust me!

That is a very pertinent point Jimmy.
The last thing you want is the disgruntled “old pro” being disruptive because the youngsters threaten his place. DB10 was great because he grew into a role that enabled him to contribute significantly on & off the pitch even though he was not a regular starter. That is something I am not sure that TH14’s ego would have allowed.
Freddie is at that point in his career where he is not finished but in decline & certainly not an automatic starter. I still feel he may have something to offer. He never was the most smooth on the eye type of player. There may be an Indian summer in him & I wish him well if it is for us or someone else.
It will be a disappointment if the story about Hoyte being available is true. He made a lot of good progress last season & I feel he will become a good dependable, if not exceptional RB. At their respective bests he is nowhere near as good as Eboue. We shall have to see what happens but it would be sad to see yet another English lad not makes it with us. He appears to have a good mentality but you have to be truly exceptional at the top clubs.
Sagna is 5’ 9” so is unlikely to develop into a Thuram. Sounds like he is an energetic FB – maybe defensive midfielder material?
By: Flint McCullough on July 12, 2007

Gallas first, if he is unhappy that we’re not bringing in world class players, he should name the current players he thinks aren’t good enough, that would be interesting.
Sagna, if he comes, will be right back with Hoyte as back up, I think Hoyte will get better but I don’t think Eboue will, I think Eboue will move out wide, where he began his career.
I don’t think we need another forward, that’s where the rows start, what we need is a winger, I expect Robinhio in a swap for Reyes, if not. make Reyes come back and rot, I really, really hope we don’t give another player away to a top Spanish club.
Or Quaresma.
Finally, nothing will happen until the Copa has finished.

Hoytes going nowhere !!! The press are just sensationalising gossip as usual !!! Eboue will be played as an attacking right sided midfieldler with Sagna and Hoyte in as Right backs. Gilbert will be played in teh cup matches while the otehrs rotate in the prem/champions league.
Juries still out on Freddie going. Think if we get cash and a player it might not be tooo bad cos lets be fair, he didnlt do much last season (or the season before) so he wonlt be a great loss.
martins….Recently heard that his ’suuposed’ 22 years old tag is a lil exaggerated. Apparently a friend of mines brother used to go school with him and was in the same class. He’s now 31 !!!!! If thats true then we DEFINITELY shouldn’t buy him whoich means we needanotehr striker. I’m hoping that Wengers trying to get Robiho for Reyes with a few mill thrown in on top, he’s be GREAT for the team.

Reyes is definetlygoing for 7 million in next few days, and I think Freddie will go too. getting 6 milion for him and being relieved of his wages is a 10 million bonanza for arsenal this year.
I would like to see Ebuoe play in the right midfield role for a few pre season games with Hoyte at right back, regardless of the Sagna situation.
If Freddie goes for 6 million, Reyes for 7 million, Flamini for 2 million, AW does have a really decent transfer budget, but theres a not a lot out there, except at sily money like Babel.
If Vela gets his passport fast tracked after the under 20s world cup finishes hes someone who could play on the wing and could adapt quickly after the rough and tumble of La Liga B.

Why should anyone be worried about a player under contract for the next 8 years?
Players only leave Arsenal if Wenger sanctions it. And he is certainly not going to sanction Cesc leaving.
If Cesc insist on leaving, the club i suppose will be asking for 45Million and above.

Geoff, can there be any truth about a Reyes exchange with Robinho, surely not, a player they rate at a piddly 6/7 million for a top class striker?
Great attitude/PR desplayed by Tomas, just what we needed to hear. If any agents are listening lets have a few more players come out with that posititive stance.

Clichy going no where. In france they are seen as the national team fullbacks for years to come. If anyone is to be worried it will be Gilbert. Hoyte as backup to Sagna. Eboue to be tried as a right midfielder. Also remember Eboue and Toure will be off to the african cup of nations this season so Sagna and Hoyte will be needed.

S A G N A S I G N S
Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted to have signed Bacary Sagna. He is a very capable defender and has played consistently well for Auxerre in recent seasons.”
Sagna was rated at £6million
Wenger anticipates playing his new signing across the defence or even in midfield, and Sagna becomes his fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Eduardo Da Silva, Havard Nordtveit and Lukasz Fabianski.
Well it was pretty obvious that we were getting him .
seems like our 2nd attempt was successful.
F R E D D Y
is linked with our former english manager sven ,
sven says he’s the finest swede still in the game .
and id say with that amount of ‘brown nosing’going on, it looks like freddy is odds on favourite to go to man city in my veiw. it seems most managers are motivated about there own country men.. i would hate freddy to be a part of the corruption brigade .taksin has so much money he makes romanov look like the artful dodger ! this is a passion buy from sven and with the cash available to him ,it has to be !
N E X T T A R G E T
Yoan Gouffran, has to be next ..
he is an arsene special ..
vela ,gouffran , walcott, fabs
these players will leave arsenes legacy well intact.
these names alone will make wengers name shine on
in the eyes of the critics for years to come.
strong rumours that RM are bidding 20 mil for fabs in the next 24 hours .. it will be interestingto see if he confirms his earlier press conference that hes happy at arsenal and staying. i have a feeling we are about to get another curve ball .
H O Y T E
i dont understand why we just dont loan hoyte out if
arsene sees no place for him this year within the squad(not sure how he sees that thou !). whats the worst that can happen he plays a whole year for reading , they are paying his wages and making him more experienced and possibly
hes worth double come the end of the season .
also arnt there restrictions for CL football .
minimum 2 englishmen + 4 home grown players that come thru the acadamy in the squad ?????

Don’t worry lads, Hoyte is going nowhere for now. With the loss of Toure and Eboue to the ANC for 4-6 weeks depending on how their respective countries perform, Hoyte will definitely be needed as cover. Gilbert will probably go out on loan again to see if he has the mettle to be a full time Gunner next year or be sold like many of our former Academy players who just could not make it here.
Sagna can also play in central defense, left back and in the midfield and so could be very useful if we have a rash of soft injuries as we did last season. If we are injury free (which almost never happens) Eboue can be used on the Flanks as a winger which eventually may be his future position. Please remember that his original position was winger.
Freddy, bless his soul has his best days behind him and if he won’t assume a backup role then we should let him part in peace and thank him for the glorious memories he has given us. Plus, if we can get 5.5 to 6 million now let’s do it. Even though he would not have served the prerequisite 10 years for a memorial game I am certain the club could be petitioned to provide this for him at the end of his career based on his loyalty and achievements for the club.
Still think we will see a few more signings. Sooner the better so we can get them on the field together in training for an extended period of time or else we will have to use this season as an adjustment period to jell.
All in all, this year may not be the brightest one but 3rd or 4th in the Prem and a Carling Cup final will move us forward to be the best team around for the next 5-7 years.

we finished 4th 2 seasons ago with a fit thierry henry,
pirez & van persie,
last season TH hardly played,RVP broke his foot & RP left,
we were putting a young team together & finding our feet at our new home & still finished a more comfortable 4th,
so we didnt go downhill did we,
chelsea couldnt beat us despite spending millions & we did the double over the mancs,
looking forward to new season & eduardo is a goal machine,
FL should go,too injury prone & hardly scored for years but still think we need left winger-shame we didnt get babel…..

Apparently we are in for marquez the barcelona and mexico defender.
I seen him play in the world cup and he looked ok.
Don’t no to mutch about sagna.
Gallas is going to be our week link this season because he is to long in the tooth.
I think he know’s wenger doesnt want him just like henry did,if we get marques he can go strait in to gallas position without any bother at all and he could be alot fitter and up for it than willy seems to be.
I hope we are looking for replacements for gilberto and gallas as they are both hitting the 30 mark, both player’s that will eventually replace them will have to be top draw.
