TV And A Real Pain In The Arsenal

This is a public service announcement. Sky and Setanta have announced their fixtures so the only ones (so far) that we have to make alternative travel arrangements for are:

Sunday 2nd September Portsmouth (1.30pm); Sunday 7th October Sunderland (Noon); Sunday 28th October Liverpool (4.00pm); Saturday 3rd November Manchester United (12.45pm); Monday 12th November Reading 8 pm

Which no doubt means we’ll be screwed for the second part of the season but it’s like a nostalgia sandwich; rarely in the past decade can we have had such a settled kick-off pattern for 3pm on a Saturday. But of course, not so helpful for those unable to travel on a fortnightly basis to see the games live.

Onto the sustenance of the pre-season where Real Madrid continue to irk. Having been rebuffed by Milan over Kaka, they continue to try to disrupt Cesc by publicly announcing their love for him despite the fact that the lad himself said he would find it difficult to play for them. However, Milan seem to have put Real off with a stern rebuff so perhaps Arsenal will do the same. It is an interesting exercise in Football politics. The Spanish environment lends itself to outlandish claims in Election Years and thereafter, those claims have to be seen to be carried out or to ‘die trying’ almost. Having been one of the planks of Calderon’s manifesto, and with Kaka out of reach apparently, Cesc is going to be subject to almost daily speculation. However, the interesting thing about Calderon is the almost naive attempts at unsettling that publicly go on; ‘we hoped the player would make it clear that he wanted away from Serie A’ is roughly the mantra that he has been chanting for Kaka. However, in order for that to come true, Kaka would have to waive his signing-on fees still due over the course of the contract. Which means that Madrid would have to fund them so it is little wonder that they pay such extraordinarily high salaries with those and the new fees to cover. Still a stern rebuttal is due this week from the Board and today would be as good a day as any to issue it.

There will be more howling and wailing no doubt over the next few days with Liverpool reportedly bidding to bring Ryan Babbel to Anfield. Another one of our media targets bites the dust. However, that will be based on two assumptions; firstly that Babbel will go there and secondly, that Arsene actually wants to sign him. The latter, if my somewhat frail memory serves correctly, has never been publicly espoused. The one thing that I remember whenever seeing his name in print linked with the club is him saying that he would like to play for the club. That was construed as being Arsenal bidding for him. In any case, it would not surprise me if he was not a target with da Silva’s signing and that players such as Merida, ostenstibly a left sided midfielder, have just been given professional contracts. The fluidity of the midfield positions are such that I suspect Arsene probably does not deem him an urgent requirement. Unlike Bakari Sagna who the Sunday Mirror believes to be signing for £7.5m this week. Now this is one I am definitely not sure about as the only logical way for him to fit into the side is to move Eboue into midfield, a not universally popular move. Still, the player has to be signed first for that conundrum to reveal itself.

Finally, Arseblogger reports that William Gallas has uttered his views on the Henry affair.

What is sure, it is that several players are questioning club’s future. Around us, all the teams are recruiting but what is planned to compensate for the departure of Henry? I will have a discussion with Arsène Wenger and board members to know the objectives of the club this season and what they wish to set up to build an even more competitive team.

Now I know that young Billy has a tendency to annoy when he shoots from the lip but on this occasion, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt as the loss of Henry is to him a shock. What is a little bit worrying though is his inability to see the bigger picture by himself and think, ‘OK, Titi is gone. We will buy someone else and this part of the team works well, we need to concentrate more in defence, the midfield need to score more. Perhaps someone on the left in midfield but otherwise we are pretty well set‘. I would hope as a self-proclaimed Senior member of the team he would do that, maybe he has. But it would be nice for him to say that. I do hope he is not in the Chelsea mindset for signings galore because he is in for a severe disappointment if he is. Still, the distance between him and Arsene when he made the comments allows him the benefit of the doubt this time around.

’til Tomorrow

Responses

  1. A more sober and mature opinion on Gallas’ comments than the Arseblogger I should say. It pays to examin both sides of things before uttering disparaging comments about someone.

  2. Watching the U20 World Cup in Canada all week for me completely validates AW’s aversion for overpaying for players. There are ALWAYS talented footballers in the World! It’s the obvious developmental fine-tuning involved that separates the Arsenal (& Ajax) from Madrid, Milan, Barca, Chelsea, Inter, etc. Man U can be excused from this list because they do seem to promote from within despite the big money signings. I’ve moved from disgust to boredom whenever the “galactico-dependent ” big clubs bellow out statements to the press that selfishly demean the rules & regulations in football. The widening gap between rich & poor in the world requires attention. UEFA can help improve perceptions by ENFORCING it’s own rules & regulations! Unfair trade practices abound aplenty in football and I think it’s time the “barons” of the G14 (like the G8) were taught the lesson of humility! Without the fans there is NO BUSINESS! Good sporting behaviour or else! Thank you Arsenal & Arsene Wenger!!!

  3. Seriously, watching Arsenal in the US is a pain in the arse. I’m not gonna pay out for the extra (costly) dish and I will just suffer waking early after bartending to watch at Fado live. God hates American Arsenal fans.

Any of ya’ll want to share tickets? I’ll fly over.

I’m sore missing Babel as a signing. Eyes to Freddy Adu. He’s got it.

    Jesus.

  4. On Gallas, I cannot see how his comments will help. He should remember that the board and Wenger may possibly decide the squad is good enough.
He has less impact on the team in comparison to Kolo, Gilberto and Cesc. Even less in comparison to Rosicky. You don’t here them making such comments.
He should talk to the boss first and respect the position of the club. If after that he is not happy he should seek a transfer after which he can write what he likes. Comments from people like him is primarily to keep his name in the media, what else does it achieve? I certain Wenger and the board will not be making signings based on what Gallas thinks.

  5. Isn’t Gallas just playing his part in the stupid PR game going on between the Board and the rest of Arsenal FC? Just last week the Board ‘leaked’ to the Daily Telegraph that AFC’s turnover was likely to be up by £68 million to over £200 million ths year – and this is all going to be given to Le Boss to spend. As usual when PHW or Edelman speak about ‘transfer war chests’ and ‘ring-fenced funds’ Le Boss is nowhere to be seen. Perhaps this isn’t surprising – especially when it looks like Le Boss has, since The Invincibles, only been allowed to spend £46 million when he’s recovered £55 million in sales! In the same period Liverpool spent about £80 million net. Being an honourable man Wenger won’t say a word about being financially tied – but might he encourage his players to come out and say what he can’t? Gallas is merely repeating the mantra of Henry and Gilberto – we need two or three players to have a serious tilt at the Premiership. As a supporter I hardly criticise Gallas for saying exactly what I’m saying.

  6. For a player of his caliber and experience, Gallas’ utterances are really disappointing . First of all he has not yet made any significant contribution to the team since he was injured last season when he arrived and even when he played, he had not yet fitted in the Arsenal defense. Instead of now thinking of what he will do for the team in this new season, he is just uttering nonsense. His words may have sense in them but he should say them to the right people and at the right time. it is still to early to start saying such things.

As for Sagna, we should not forget that last season Eboue got injured and that cost us a lot. There also African Cup of Nations of which Eboue will have to play, Sagna will be there to replace him if we sign him anyway.

No worries, Arsenal is still strong. let the season start.

  7. I think we’ll see more of Eboue in wide right midfield this season, I concure I haven’t seen anyone bought that would desperately improve what we’ve already got. I’m sure once Reyes has gone a left winger will arrive. As for the board leaking figures they are constantly having criticism on them that they don’t spend, I’m sure they would if Wenger wanted them too so it’s in there interest to ounter spin. Gallas should think about the players who beat Man Utd and Liverpool twice and drew with Chelsea twice last season.

  8. Gallas needs to shut the fuck up or he’ll be lucky if he meets Wenger. The Board won’t give a shit what he thinks.

He needs to prove his worth to the club before he starts thinking he can speak for anyone!

All I see is a useless jumped up turd with a big mouth.

  9. The same value system must apply to players too. How much more money do u need to live well whether or not you’re at the twilight of your career? Should you not stand for more than winning? I hope Henry wins the Champs league in his 1st season so he can get over his insecurities asap. As one of the many mercenaries that have passed thru Barca he should be very proud. One hopes his diluted legacy serves him well in his fight against racism in the game, especially in La Liga. The Arsenal must not degrade football & it’s core values. The BEAUTIFUL GAME helps keep millions of earthlings belivers in the higher values & creative possibilities inherent within a collective.
Guys, I apologize for being so harcore today but I’m so tired of the prevalent state of selfishness everywhere. If Gallas-the predictable wants to go, please AW, fire him out of the nearest cannon!

  10. I don’t blame Gallas he was aonly saying what i amagine is on every arsenal players mind, my hopes are that the signing of EDS will appease those nervous about TH14 move to Barca.

I agree with arsenalroo that with reyes gone we need a goalscoring left midfielder, fran merida has to be the one to fill that void, though Freddy Adu kind of fits that bill, but the EPL is a BIG step up from the MLS.

  11. I have never been sure of William Gallas, and I am even less so now I have seen these remarks. He just is not an Arsenal player and he clearly doesn’t really feel like one. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt but my instinct would be to get rid of him, but not until I had gotten a decent season out of him.

Eddy Pratt..I don’t agree with any of your comments and what mantra are you accusing Gilberto of spouting? You tar Gilberto with the same brush as Henry and Gallas…sounds a bit suspicious to me.

  12. I like your style Aman – but unfortunately a lot of people see football as just being about winning at any price.

I know a lot of fans agree with Gallas, but I still feel that it is innappropriate for him to air these views in public as they only serve to undermine the confidence of players and fans alike. If this is his idea of leadership he needs to think again. He has done nothing on the pitch for Arsenal to earn the right and he should be speaking to the club directly not through his website if he has any concerns to raise.

  13. your right silver ,

freddy adu would be perfect, and it would give man U a poke up the bum .
ive always said fabs and gallas would be next.. looks like
he’s buttering us up before pulls the pin …

if wenger really wants babel he should swoop now . hes pretty mature and looks good in internationals also. get babel – sagna ., and lets role the dice …

i wouldnt be devistated if gallas left .i think the only person who thinks gallas is good.. is ..errr .. ‘gallas’ !.
infact we could get edmilson from barca ! ..edmilson does a better job as DM also !he gives flexibility too CD – DM . good cover for the aging gilberto.sell gallas -edmilson in .. more money to get another defender . 2 for the price of 1 . same or better experience at the back . get curtis davies with gallas ’s money .. job done.. too easy,

    HE WONT DO IT !

  14. Not happy about Ryan Babel being “nicked” liverpool, that is not nice he is a liverpool type player they should stick with Emile Heskey types………

  15. Were we ever interested in Babel though ? Scouts watched him but were not convinced, hence no bid made – to our knowledge. All the talk on Babel came from the media or the player himself, nothing from Arsenal.

Look i know its practically impossible but the only “source” we can trust is the club when they announce a transfer. Look at Eduardo, nothing at all on the player and then bang he was signed.

  16. I don’t like Gallas’ attitude, he has been a loud mouth from his time at Chelsea. It suited that club but not ours. As far as I am concerned he has alot to prove this season. I remember him being one of the ones who said that our youngsters wern’t performing well enough when it was our experienced players who were underperforming.
If we could swop him for another premiership international center back I would jump at the chance. As the papers said at the weekend Jamie Caragher was giving up International football as he does not get enough credit. We should swop him and he would play for England each time as Mclaren would much prefer to go to the Arsenal at the weekend rather than up north.

  17. I agree Lancealittle, Gallas does have it all to do. He is a player that should become a leader in this team. He should be binding this team to a unit, he as the ability and the experience. Just gotta get his head on the job at hand…

  18. Gallas, doesnt care what team he’s on , as long as there winning .. infact, even then he complains !

im sure if we have another average season , gallas will be off .. i say lets do it whilst we can get the transfer .. his attitude has the same undertones as cashly cole / henry , can the club match my goals ? ! …

    S A C K H I M N O W ! ! ! or change your ways gallas !

  19. Gallas?? Who is he again, wasn’t this the same bloke who spent an age on the side lines!! The man that moaned 24/7 at Chelsea!! I knew the day would come when he would start acting exactly as he has…he is an older version of Cashley (always thinking of the money). We need players who are hungry for a scrap not just a pay cheque.

Hm, now the Babel one is interesting. If any of you have watched him you will know he can be quite the physical player…a Bergkamp type but with muscle (albiet younger version and not a finished product). I am not the pay master but if I was we would have one more new signing. Still, the wenger seems to know best :)

    Come on the new season!

  20. I agree Gallas needs to be to be told to shut and then benched as part of his punishment because his mouth is loud.

A part of me agrees with him that as yet we have been far too quiet in the tranfer market but we are just into the 2nd week of the transfer window so theres plenty of time to go as far as transfers are concerned. As much as this may have been preying on his mind he should have raised this to AW or the board instead of the back pages.

The man has an ego complex you only need to see his website to clarify this.

    If you want a laugh…… http://www.williamgallas.net/en/index.asp

We may never have been interested in Babel but he is SO good he would have fit right in to arsenal type of football and can play on either wing very effectively shame……….

  21. Maybe this is why we wont go for Babel (if we were ever going to, all been media speculation hasnt it ?)

Liverpool have made a £10m bid for highly-rated Ajax winger Ryan Babel, BBC Five Live Sport understands.

However, the Dutch club are thought to be holding out for £13.5m for the 20-year-old, who has also been linked to Arsenal.

    13.5 mil – are they serious ?

  22. No point in telling Gallas to hush it. Just ship him out to his preferred destination asap. It’s obvious today’s generation of footballers (Gerrard sickens me the most) have such a flawed take on what’s important in life. But I really cannot blame them. They’re only reflecting the present day. UGLY, ugly negative energy carriers. Toss out the bad apple is what I say.
Really though, does Gallas qualify as an Arsenal player??????

  23. I say Gallas out Curtis Davies in,

I would completely agree with his sentiments, if they were made on August 31st when the Transfer Window closes following no more additions to the squad.

It seems strange that he probably has not even spoken to Wenger and you never know, come Wednesday Morning, Pre-season Training may be interupted with the public showing of new signings. Ok that probably wont happen.

I am sure things are happening behind closed doors, but if the Board and Wenger do come out with the ‘I feel this Squad can Challenge’ statements again without experienced additions then I will be pretty peeved.

I don’t think we need spend all the cash on a big name Charlies, however we need to improve the overall level of the Squad. There are well priced players out there that could make a difference, Anelka, Owen, Wright-Phillips, Quaresma, Davies etc. There are blatently players like Hleb, Eboue and Adebayor that just dont cut the mustard, and whilst these guys are in the starting 11 week in week out, we will not break back into the top 2

People bang on about Wenger’s ability to bring in an unknown to wow the world and I agree with him, but the likes of Anelka, Vieira, Toure etc came into an already experienced squad so there lives were made easier. This is no longer the case,

how many of the current players would get a game in the same team as:

Seaman, Cole, Adams, Campbell, Lauren, Pires, Vieira, Gilberto, Ljungberg (In his heyday) Bergkamp and Henry

To me its only Fabregas and I think that says a lot

  24. Definitely RvP would get into that team. Definitely Rosicky would get into that team. Definitely Clichy would get into that team..Kolo Toure would too. I think that Diaby, Denilson, Hleb would probably get in this season. Bendtner, Adebayor, Walcott, Hoyte..well I think they might given a chance. Fabianski may do and Jens is better than Seaman in his last season or two. Actually Almiunia is better than Seaman in his last season. Merida, Vela, well definitiely in two or three years. etc etc. Senderos and Djourou would get in straight away.

So what is your point Patthegooner?

  25. Frank

I am comparing a starting 11 in 2002 to our current starting 11

The point is that was a team at its peak in 2002 and I am not talking about what current players will be like in 2 or 3 years.. Its this year that is important and if you took the current squad at its current level it, the only one that would possibly sneak ahead of Gilberto is Fabregas

Jens better than Seaman, you are having a laugh. any set piece against us turns jens into a madman and it cost us

    Kolo, on the bench possibly

Clichy better than Cole sorry no he is not

Rosicky ahead of Pires Really, just look at the goal tallies mate

Diaby, Denilson are some years off, Hleb has been here two seasons and he is not good enough.

The others you mention are years off and we cant afford to wait fielding a whole team full of them. Dont get me wrong we probably have more potential than any other team but given our current squad today our balance is wildly off course. Our squad has been stripped of experience too quickly and it has been happening over the last 3 to 4 years, always the same trend experience out and kids in which is all being well if you want to win the FA Youth Cup or come 4th but that is it

One last point, you say Senderos and Djourou in straight away, what ahead of Campbell and Adams, what have you been drinking

  26. silver gunner .. I clicked on the link to the Frog’s website and I hoped I would find his interview, but all I could see was his pompous self .. now I start to get annoyed by all these French semi-god players .. we have TH14 who thinks he is some kind of intellectual, Thuram who fair enough gets involved in social work, but believes he should become prime minister, and now Obermeister Gallas who has to voice his dissatisfaction after playing a gruesome season .. btw same as Thuram..and remember how average he was when we played Juve 2 seasons ago .. plus TH who had en equally average turnout last year
i believe that the true hero of that generation was Zidane (easy one) and there were better players around than our friend William ..the likes of Desailly,etc..
in fact his moaning comes as no surprise to me and I was actually expecting this a bit earlier .. now all this bullsh*t about talking for others as well.. he surely cant befriend many of the current AFC team and if we lose Toure one day, it might well be due to having players like Gallas in the side
the guy is vastly overrated .. surely on the back of what I have seen from him and he might well want to go before somebody punches him
his website hosts the biggest amount of self proclaiming glory that I have ever seen .. clearly hes got more than a chip on his shoulder
my point here is that PV,TH and Gallas are marginals in the golden generation in French football.. thats why TH is not overly worshipped in France, more here in fact than over there ..
none of them has left AFC or will hopefully leave the club in Gallas case in a positive way
TH in the end was shambolic, nearly as bad as PV
but at least they had achieved results for us .. Gallas is an opinionated French moron who should not play for us
probably best place would be Inter as he would fit in well with the mercenaries in that side
as far as people agreeing with Gallas comments on this blog, you must be joking me .. nothing Gallas does is constructrive, its all about his unlimited and ugly ego that he needs to feed
AFC is not a banana republic and its about time that AW kicks one of them out before they pollute things even more
I do not want to see Gallas in our shirt again .. the guy was, is and will always be a bloody nuisance and an average player at best .. just remember THE LIVERPOOL GAME LAST SEASON
also to take some sting out of what might be seen by some as overly anti French comments, I want to say that I am not English and have very strong strong links to France !!

  27. Pathe_gooner that is a pointless question. It took time for that 2002 team to peak. We have the team we have and they will be better than last season having learned a few hard lessons along the way. A couple of wise buys that will improve what we already have wouldn’t go amiss, but why not give the team a chance before you write them off. Apart from Campbell and world cup winner Gilberto most of those names you mentioned did not come to Arsenal as the finished articles either.

  28. I am not writing them off at all, as I mentioned I believe we have a lot of potential superstars in our starting 11 but I think we have the balance between potential youth and experienced class wrong. my issue is BALANCE, I think we have it wrong and whilst I believe and hope Wenger will finally address this, but I seem to be talking about the same things every Summer ‘The experienced guys are leaving and the kids are coming in’

I agree that the team in 2002 did take time to mould but we always seemed to get the balance right back then. if you look at that 11 in 2002, there were probably 3 or 4 that were not finished articles (Cole, Gilberto and Yes Henry at the time),

Yet you look at a 11 now (And I am trying to keep the experience in)

Jens: Probably at a similar career stage as Seaman was but Jens has always worried me with his temperment

Clichy: Still growing into the role

Gallas: not convinced, looked great early on but after injuries and morale killing outbursts not quite the same

Toure: I would class him as the finished article

    Eboue: still growing

Rosicky: had his year to settle, needs to do better on the goal tally this year

Fabregas: God Like, imagine when he does peak

    Gilberto: Finished article

Hleb: still growing, I keep thinking maybe next year though but I think it is more in hope than reality

Van Persie: still growing, I think he would possibly of been there last year but injuries kicked in.

Adebayor: Still growing, but I just dont see it coming

so we have gone from 3 growing players in 11 to around 6 or 7, and that is before you even think about the squad,

Back then we could look at a bench with Parlour, Wiltord, Kanu, Grimandi, Keown, Edu etc now its all potentials

I really hope the kids shove it down my throat next season, but i fear we will again be battling for 4th not 1st next May. You have to be careful as a fan, as it easy for emotions to pull you into a Gallas style rant, you have to remember the window has only been open 9 days and Copa America is in full flow, but I think we will all know on the 1st September when the Window is shut what our real chances are.

Again this is not about not giving them a chance, I will love whoever comes out in every game next season and the ones after, but the balance needs and hopefully will be addressed

  29. Ok Pathe_gooner, I take your point, but Wenger is well aware of the need for better balance in the team – he said so himself at the end of last season.

The purchase of Eduardo is part of this better balance i.e. a more conventional striker who will hopefully arrive in the box to snap up some of those chances that went begging last year. If the Sagna deal really happens, we’ll have a versatile and experienced defender to provide more cover for injuries across the backline. If Flamini can be persuaded to stay that’s another experienced and versatile squad player for the midfield and defence. Get rid of Reyes and who knows who might come in place of him. I’m willing to wait and see what else Wenger does to address the balance of the team. I certainly do not want a big name for the sake of it because that would only disrupt and unbalance the team further.

  30. Passenal-

The 2002 team was built from 1999. The current team should be ready possibly for the coming season but more likely the following season because more surgery was required under more difficult circumstances.

Show me some players who have been bought or sold by PL clubs this summer who would get into that team?

Also for me Lehmann now is a better goalkeeper than Seaman 2002, albeit at their peaks it would be a different story.

I would like Gallas to get his wish & let him watch a Steve Bould type stopper take his place.

  31. Sorry Passenal – my previous comment was intended for Patthegooner.

It seems to me that World Class seems to be banded about rather freely and appears to be based more on the fee paid rather than the quality of the player.

  32. [...] TV And A Real Pain In The Arsenal This is a public service announcement. Sky and Setanta have announced their fixtures so the only ones (so far) that we […] [...]

  33. I think Gallas needs to shut his f*ing mouth and start acting like the veteran he’s supposed to be. What the youngsters need are people like Gilberto, quiet confident leaders who will support them; or Kolo, who’s love of the club comes out in every interview, and whose passion bled onto the pitch against CSKA Chelski in the Carling final. What we DON’T need is another goddamn sniveling whining frenchman (even France finally got smart and got rid of Jaques Chirac!) who thinks only of himself. If you don’t like the club, pack your bag and GET OUT. We don’t need your sort, you don’t know sweet FA about Arsenal football (if I can borrow a quote). If you want to stay and play then shut up and prove yourself on the pitch.

  34. Passenal

Very good point, I really like Flamini, he reminds me a bit of Grimandi, he will always give 100% even if out of position.

I heard on another site that he was considering staying, I hope that is true

and with Sagna, I think it will help the balance. above that I would just like a Top winger and if required Gallas’s replacement,

  35. Patthegooner,

No drink at all last night. I stick by my comments. They will stick it down your throat next season.

    Frank
