A mixed bag in this morning’s papers, with the the same tripe being travelled out over most of the pages, in between the hacks wet dreams about Lewis Hamilton and the paucity of performance by the England cricket team.
Kicking it all off, it seems Arsene is being offered a £3.5m per year deal for the next four years with a ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ card being offered at the end of each season, so sayeth the News of the Screws. According to the report, ‘A Top Arsenal Source’ revealed,
Arsene is the life and soul of this club. He has been offered a new deal but will be allowed to leave for nothing at the end of every season if he chooses
The paper states that the Board hope he will sign the deal before the first team starts pre-season training next week and that this is all coming to a head because of ‘fears that speculation over his future could unsettle the players‘. And of course, the hacks would love such a clause to exist because it means they can run their tired and lazy speculation each summer, eventually be proven right when Arsene does decide to retire, under their ‘exclusive’ headlines of ‘Arsene can’t be Arsed anymore‘. Equally, they will love it because the ongoing speculation about Cesc can continue, including missing out some phrases from what was a completely sensible quote given to the media by his Mr 20%. Joseba Diaz is lazily quoted as saying,
Cesc has not got plans to leave Arsenal. At this moment, there is no offer from Madrid and no negotiation. Cesc will start to train next week but you never know what might happen. It could all change.
Of course for the hack in question to have included the full quote might actually have changed perceptions about their doom-mongering or rather lazy-arsenalled attempt at it. Diaz had in fact been widely quoted elsewhere as saying,
If Arsene Wenger had gone away from Arsenal, everything would be different because he is the soccer father of Cesc, and the boy has a lot to thank him for. Cesc has not considered an exit from Arsenal. At the moment, there is neither an offer from Madrid for Cesc’s services or any type of negotiation. It has been said that I have been at the Bernabeu to talk with Madrid about a move, but this is false. Cesc will begin training with Arsenal, but this is football and you never know what can happen – everything can change. But right now it is impossible that Cesc will be in Madrid, because there isn’t any offer
Which is somewhat different to the angle that the Screws wants to portray. The comments by Diaz are about as definitive as you can get and short of saying, Cesc is at Arsenal for life irrespective of who is boss and how well they do (which incidentally nobody would believe), but never let the full quote get in the way of a sensationalist piece.
Eduardo da Silva introduces himself to the waiting world with tales of derring-do, recounting how the hardship he endured – sleeping in a cold stadium in a Croatian winter, no cash, no home – as a 15 year old boy which given how cold the weather can get over there means going for a Dudu must have been ‘character building. The tales of homesickness and how they have been overcome indicate an inner strength which will hopefully mean that he can cope with the scrutiny of the Premiership. Meanwhile Jeremie Aliadiere tells how ‘You ruined my career Wenger‘, guaranteeing himself a warm reception on his return with his ‘Frockney’ accent. An indicative quote is,
At Arsenal I would just train and then, at the end of the week, when the squad was put up, if I wasn’t in it – that would be it. Arsene Wenger would not come and talk to me and telly me why
Jesus. I wonder if the boy thought about going to Arsene and asking, ‘What area of my game do I need to work on to get into the team regularly?’. The answer to my question comes from a later quote, showing just how little grasp he has of what was required of him,
Whenever I played at Arsenal, I felt like I had to score a goal or do something special
Leaving aside the bloody obvious. In fact no I won’t. A centre forward is supposed to score. That’s their primary role in the team. Playing for Arsenal requires that both of the observations Aliadiere makes come true. And also a firm indicator as to why he failed to make the grade at the Club. Hey ho but in today’s Blame someone else, it’s not my fault culture, at least Jeremie can console himself with his pile of pennies that he got for the interview.
Jose Antonio Reyes has apparently been in London trying to resolve the thorny issue of the fee demanded by the club. It led me to believe that I may well have woken up in a parallel universe because there was another outbreak of sanity by his Mr 20%,
Arsenal are not asking for 20 million euros but they are asking for a reasonable fee in accordance with what they paid to Sevilla
Hold on a minute, we’re supposed to be the bad guys, holding out for a fortune whilst the poor, enslaved JAR is being denied the right to ply his trade at The Bernabeu. The only bit missing was how Madrid were holding everything up by offering a derisory €6m. Still, it seems that this one is moving towards its conclusion although the pace is about the same as his departure on loan so he’ll probably be signed by Madrid in August some time.
Gunnerblog reports that a deal has been agreed with Caen for the Ligue 2 Player Of The Season Yoan Goufrann but he will be loaned back to the Club next year to continue his development in Le Championnat in the same way Carlos Vela is going to in the Primera Division.
I’m feeling bright and optimistic about the coming season and no tired hack is going to ruin it for me. Well, not for today at least so enjoy your day.
’til Tomorrow.

We should not be too surprised when an agent never rules out a move as their interest is to move players on to get their 20%. However i feel we have to be realistic and accept that Cesc is going to return to Spain at some point but i am confident that whilst Arsene is still around he himself knows there is an awful lot to do at Arsenal and he can take this team to win the CL in the not so far future and become the best player in the world with us and then perhaps turn to Real or Barca at a later date as he will still be relatively young. I cant wait for Reyes to move that bloke is really starting to get my goat and i just hope Arsene has some goalscoring winger lurking somewhere to replace that Spanish s..t Good blog as usual Yogi keep up the good work and roll on the new season and rub those Drogba words right down his throat!

A good read as always Yogi. I have some sympathy with Aliadiere as I feel there is a good player in there somewhere. Injuries didn’t help him but he didn’t take his chances when he had them even though they were limited. Considering that this was also the case on loan at Celtic and West Ham you have to ask whether there was something about his game or attitude that held him back. Or, as you say, maybe it’s always someone else’s fault.

How can a “you can go at the end of any season” deal provide any security at all for the club?
In the particular current circumstances I think AW needs to commit now for 2/3 years with maybe an option to leave if the club changes ownership.
It is said that Jeremie had loads of chances but that is not really true. He never played more than the odd game & rarely consecutively. That was mainly because he was either unable to impose himself & was injured too much, even at the back end of last season, when he should have had his chance.
I wish him well because there is something there but I fear that like Jeffries his talent is not enough to overcome his weaknesses.

The option is not really worth anything anyway. It’s a Contract of Employment so is breakable with the required notice; in a managers case, that’s about 20 minutes.
Would this clause mean instability? I doubt it. Footballers are regularly agigtated into a move or transferred and the only one whose future is intertwined with Wenger is Cesc. Even then, I suspect if Wenger went, he would wait and see who they appointed before making any decision on his own future.

I think Cesc has not yet become his own man – he still feels so grateful to Wenger that he cannot picture himself at Arsenal without him. I’m hoping that next season will see him really step up and realise that Arsenal really is ‘his team’ and that he doesn’t need Wenger to do what he does. Not that I want Wenger to go, I just want Cesc to see that his future does not have to be bound up with the manager.
As for Aliadiere – to quote Gilberto ‘he talks too much’. He may be a good player, but he is not Arsenal quality. Now he has a chance to play regularly lets see what he does with it.

Sad to say but Aliadierre not only had too many chances to shine but also failed in three loan attempts.
AW, nursed this lad at the expense of young stars like Bentley, and we lost out because of it.
JA…is only trying to convince the boro locals that it was not his fault that he failed. What else would he say / The truth?
He has the talent but he has been a non stop inury problem and never recaptured the spark that listed him as a petntial star.
Good luck son but remember who it was that kept paying you wages for very little return.

It really annoys me that a player will leave our club if Wenger leaves, only to go to another team where Wenger will probably not be the manager anyway.
It’s the same with Henry, he said he left cos Dein left and cos he wasn’t sure how long Wenger would be manager but he’s gone to a club where neither of them are there anyway.
Why does Cesc have to leave just cos Wenger does? Why cant he play for Arsenal under a different manager rather than for another team under a different manager?

YW,
I think that all the speculation about AW understates his potion in the club. Stating the obvious he has created a new football club and has been instrumental or a key figure in the building of new fitness regimes, player assessment and contracting policies, youth development, scouting and intelligence, new training and playing facilities, new stadium, partnerships, technical staffing as well as building a squad which is about to come to fruition and another squad coming along behind (Vela, Merida et al). This is not just about contracts it is more about ‘how can I leave all that I have built?’. The only reason he would leave his current posotion is if he felt he could not go any further or if he thought that he himself was now surplus to requirements. When AW leaves I am sure it will not be to some shabby, media soaked, impossible to deliver job at Real Madrid, it it will be to retire at least from everyday management. He will also have identified and nurtured his own replacement.
With Cesc I agree with Passenal I think he is a great player already but the club cannot afford to rest on its laurels. Cesc has an escape plan which will probably not kick in for a year or two..and he has been good enough to be open about it. Barcelona is his team not Arsenal although that may change, he would go there regardless of the manager. There are many players in the squad who feel that Arsenal is their team. All the signs are that Cesc is similar to Henry and Vieira..but perhaps more honorable. The major difference is that he is likely to go at the height of his powers rather than when he is pushed out (which is what I believe happened to both Vieira and Henry). With Henry we became too dependent upon one player and so the club should be ensuring that Denilson, Merida, Diaby and/or others are already waiting to step in when (not if) Cesc goes..and of course making sure that they get maximum advantage when he does. If Cesc can’t commit then that is OK so long as it is a two way process, and the club and team is well prepared for it.

It’s always a pleasure to read a well written opinion, and with sensible responses…. and without that mindless swearing that spoils so many blogs.
Keep it up, you’re always worth reading.
And as a Gunners supporter for more years than most, and remembering all of those years in the wilderness, we should be thankful for the last 10 years of fantastic football…… great players and an even greater manager. Don’t worry about Henry’s departure …. sure we’ll miss him – for the first one or two matches and then ranks will close and we’ll all be cheering on yet another wonderful TEAM performance. Trust AW …… he plans meticulously and we have not just a team with potential but with the ability to go places this season (and with potentially even more outstanding talent waiting in the wings).
Cheer up all you doomsayers …. we’ll be in the top 3 without a doubt.

GunnerPete – I have to disagree with you on the point that Aliadiere had chances at the expense of Bentley since they do not occupy the same positions on the pitch.

Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble indeed.
I agree completely. My own view has always been that he will go when he thinks he can take the ‘project’ no further. To be honest the speculation will never go away. I think I said the other day (if I didn’t I meant to) the attention is an affirmation that Wenger is doing a good, if not excellent, job at Arsenal. After all, if he’d lost his touch, nobody would want him.

Yogi,
apropos the purported “get out of jail free” clause in Arsene’s contract:
It could well be a signal on the board’s part indicating their confidence in their being able to address the concerns Arsene might have aired with regards to the future.
Arsene has always said he’s never broken a contract, and seems to be a man who takes pride in completing his contracts. That suggests he thinks through things quite seriously before agreeing to one. It could well be that after all the turmoil on the board, and a prospective takeover on the cards, Arsene has aired concerns regarding the future, and the board have unilaterally offered a unilateral termination option as an indication of their belief in being able to manage whatever the concerns be well.
After all, you wouldn’t offer one unless you’re sure of the integrity of the other party, and are certain you’ll be delivering the goods demanded of you.

Karthic,
I think the change of ownership ‘issue’ is a red herring. If Kroenke came in with Dein in tow, I doubt Arsene would walk in solidarity with current board; he is too intelligent a man for that and has a personal relationship with DD. If Dein wasn’t involved then it’s a whole different ball game but I have an inkling that AW would still stay as long as he had the freedom he currently does.

I believe that if Kroenke succeeds DD will return as chairman , and AW, and Cesc will stay. I have grave doubts about the current board, they just use PHW as a spokeman and hes useless, and theres nobody there with football knowledge. All this BS inthe press that Grimandi will be director of football seems to have gone away.
On some arsenal blogs the constant theme is lack of money, but I believe thats nonsense, I believe its lack of suoer players at reasonable prices. Ribery for 17 miilion is a joke.
Who could AFC bought in the last 2 seasons that they missed because of the price?
By: solgooner on July 8, 2007

I agree with that, YW. This is the project of his life, he is not shackled to any particular individual it is too important to him. Just a pleasure to be a part of it and to watch a man with such a vocation.
By: Frank on July 8, 2007

Solgooner, I think AW gets the players he wants. He is rarely interested in established superstars. Although I am sure he is interested in value for money, I think it is more to do with the type of player he wants in his squad.
By: Frank on July 8, 2007

Yogi,
I can see where you’re coming from with your “red herring” remark; I don’t entirely disagree.
But I’m going to withold judgement till the Kroenke situation gets resolved explicitly. As it stands, he, assuming we add DD’s shareholding to the pot, is only in a prime position for a takeover. Nothing more. We’re not aware yet of the exact “understanding” between him and the current board, notwithstanding PHW and KE meeting him.
The primary concerns are these:
We are already saddled with a good deal of debt, will SK saddle us with even more by way of borrowings to fund the takeover? If so, how much and what consequences will that have on cash available for team management etc etc.
Anyway all that comes after the upcoming season.
We’ll see.

the few 1st team games alde played he was usually on the wing . only last season did wenger give him a try out in the striker role , and im all pretty sure none of us saw much potential ! ok good to average in 1 or 2 games but RVP-walcott-ade has had better glimpses in that position !!
now with da silva and bentner, 5 in that area..
we strong enough .. you might see wenger sign a 17 year old wonder kid striker this year, but if rumours of signing Yoan Gouffran are true there you have it .. the end of our striker hunt..
i know they have been looking at him a long time but i just thought man u or chevs will price us out ..
the french connection ( i knew arsene would probly hear rumours of this kid ! and he is mad to not grab him before he’s worth 15+ mil )
he really is the next big thing in france . the french equiv. of rooney , i for one hope he keeps it going here in the EPL.
Passenal so with bentner taking his position as wonder kid in waiting in the SAME positions . why would we need jeremie? we are even loaning Gouffran back to caan for next season .
DID YOU EVER THINK THAT MAYBE AT HIS AGE HE HASNT GOT IT ! thats why we sold him ???
or always injured !!
also its good for the lad. you might see him change his game at middlesboro, and become the player wenger was hoping he would be , sometimes you have to push the chicks from the nest.. in order for them to fly .
heres some info on :-
Yoan Gouffran (born May 25, 1986 in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges) is a French footballer of Guadeloupean descent, currently playing for SM Caen. His position is striker. He has bags of pace and a is an excellent finisher with either his left or right foot.
Gouffran took part in the 2006 U-21 Championships in Portugal, where he made four appearances and scored one goal.
Paris Saint Germain hoped to sign the 20-year-old during the 2007 January transfer window, however they were unwilling match the €3million (£2million) valuation.
On May 20th, Gouffran was awarded French Ligue 2 Player of the Season after a successful season with SM Caen which see the club promoted to the Ligue 1 next season finishing second behind FC Metz.
English club Arsenal F.C. are reported to have signed Gouffran on a 4 year contract [[1]]. However next season he will be loaned back to Caen
