Peter Kenyon is never knowingly shy about blowing his own trumpet; this time in dismissing the chances of Liverpool and Arsenal for the title, he has done part of Benitez and Wenger’s motivational aims for them.
They [Arsenal] are one of the top four. We always see Liverpool as a threat but you have got to see Manchester United as the No1 threat. It is between us and United
If he seriously believes that, I say Bring It On. Whilst the other three have brought in new ‘headline grabbing’ players, it is noticeable that the dimissal of Arsenal is because of a different mentality, the inability to see that a squad can grow together. Which in Kenyon’s case is a surprising blindspot having seen what Ferguson achieved in the late 90’s with a young(ish) squad.
The squad been put together is not just about the next nine months nor is the one at Old Trafford. In both cases, there is a strong sense that these players could be together for a number of years. In the case of Arsenal, it is sense that the players could re-introduce ‘loyalty’ to a club over a period of time, an element that has been rapidly disappearing from the English game over the past twenty years at the big clubs. At Stamford Bridge, there is a sense of the ‘mercenary’ footballer, money is the overriding loyalty. That is the way Chelsea choose to operate, their business plan if you like. But it is something that requires three or four new faces each Summer. It is also a breeding ground for discontent in the long term for whilst the money may placate the lack of playing time, there is a continuing ‘Bogarde’ element in their squad, players who cannot possibly play regularly enough to obtain career fulfilment. The medals that are won do mean something but if you only participate in the minimum number of games, there is a hollowness to their adornment. It is a business plan that cannot be argued with in the short term though as it has brought two Premierships and an FA Cup but is it of any use in the long term? In that it buys them time to develop a youth system, yes although the likelihood of Chelsea breaking even by the end of the 2009-10 season diminishes because of the nature of their operation; the player purchases continue until a sustained chain of youth comes through the ranks. The past two seasons have seen them use the ‘free transfer’ market well but that is limited with Clubs tying players to longer contracts, negating the effect of FIFA Contractual Rulings in recent years. Moreover, the ‘Lyon’ methodology of increasing transfer fees once Chelsea are interested diverts profits to someone else.
So it is interesting to see a wave of optimism amongst Arsenal supporters when you would expect the opposite effect to take place with Henry’s departure. Gone is the ‘talismanic’ forward of yesteryear, in is a forward line that is young and potentially full of goals. It is a word used frequently about the squad, they have the ‘potential’ to do everything but equally nothing. However, having seen in the past two seasons how they have coped with the testing circumstances that injuries have thrown up and a move to a new ground this explains in part the encouraging mood. To retain a top four place is an achievement in itself but the previous decade had raised the expectations to an extraordinary level compared to those of the preceding half a century. Some have no truck with the view that we have achieved in the last two seasons, the word ‘under’ would be prefixed. And there is truth in that view but only because of the immediate past.
So to the coming season. There was a lot of comment about the goals in the squad. To be honest that is not the area of concern for me. For a talented bunch of individuals, the defence remained just that last season. Even when a rare clean sheet was kept, there was a sense that is was achieved more by luck than judgement. Injuries played their part but the lack of understanding was there all season, even when you had the experienced Centre Back pairing of Toure and Gallas in two. It takes time for that to be built and Gallas’ spells on the sidelines undermined this process. In the event though, it was a collective weakness despite consistency from Toure and Clichy. Too often goals were conceded by lapses in concentration, too often home games were chased rather than directed. It is this has to be eradicated. Until the forward line is proven to be firing (and I do not expect Eduardo to score consistently until Autumn with the ‘bedding in’ that has to take place), the defence must get back into the habit of not conceding. If more clean sheets had been kept then third would have been clearly won with Liverpool’s ‘European’ strategy being followed and second would not have been unfeasible.
For me, the defence will be the key to a successful season which is an almost perverse way of looking at the most attack minded squad in the Division. Yet without a return to the habits of old, no amount of attack will solve the problem.

Say! I’ve got the perfect song for Eduardo Da Silva! To the tune of the great Police track:
De do do do, de da da da, Da Silva’s gon-na score on you!
De do do do, de da da da, Impos-si-ble to stop him too.
ad infinitum.

YW,
I think that the lengthy training and pre-season programme this summer will benefit the defenders and the team’s defence in general. Remember Gallas was thrown in at the last minute, and was in and out with injuries. Defenders need to work as a unit and you can only achieve that through training together. George Graham famously tied the defenders together with a rope but I am sure that AW and his coaches have more sophisticated methods..no doubt the videos and pro-zone stats will serve them well.
I still think that if we had converted our chances in many games we would have been out of sight and so defensive errors would not have had the same significance. Playing with more confidence in the last third, which I think will happen, pushes the whole team forward and reduces the no. of corners, free kicks around our area, and ultimately creates less defensive errors.
The other ‘problem’ area is Jens..he destroys concentration at defensive set pieces. It will be interesting to see if there is a battle for GK this season. I have a feeling that he may not finish the season in No 1 spot. I hear he is pondering retirement after this season.
I am sure we will see a lot more clean sheets this year our defensive abilities around the pitch will improve. The defence will finish the season as heroes.

Not inventive, really, but if you exchange Kanu for Dudu in song, the result is still > Anelka.

Good points YW. A solid defence would be the perfect foundation for the team because it will give the midfield confidence to create and make the chances for the forwards to score. Maybe the presence of Steve Bould at pre-season training is a good sign.

I think Yogi is right to suggest the bigger area of concern is defensive. In my observation, Eboue is quite naive with his defensive positioning, not to mention over-exuberant in diving in for tackles. His attitude is also, I think, questionable. What he offers, i.e. explosive attacking running and dynamic crossing, is plain and I guess one just has to hope for some extra maturity as he gets more experience. Lehmann, frankly, has always given me the shits. His tantrums are destabilizing and absurd. Quality shot-stopper no doubt, but I have often got the sense of frost between Toure and Jens. None of this, however, is unsolvable, goalkeepers and central defenders don’t have to like each other after all. I think Gallas is the key here, and his partnership with Toure, which needs to be given time to grow. No injuries William!
Clichy is, obviously, a gun. A fine replacement for Ashley Cole and none of the bullshit.
On Senderos: I have to say I like his physical presence and his intelligent reading of play. His weakness is his touch and technique with the ball, not unlike Sol Campbell in a way, although Sol had pace in his prime and Phillipe does not. But barring his fear of Didier Drogba (which is not an unreasonable fear, rationally speaking – take a look at the guy!) I think he’s a fine player.
Nick.
ps. Excellent blog Yogi, btw.
pss. Are Arsenal fans the most prolific bloggers on the net? Seems it.

Defensive consistency is down to the performance of individual players but primarily down to consistency of selection. The players forming our first choice back four which might reasonably be considered as Eboue, Toure, Gallas, Clichy started in 69% of league games (not all playing together at the same time though). In the previous season when we barley made 4th our first choice back four players started in 55% of games. We conceded fewest goals (17) in the ‘98 season when our back four players of choice started in 83% of games and in the unbeaten season ‘04 a reassuring 88%.
So, the players need to play well or course, but fans should be hoping for our best defenders to start in 80% of games if we are to see real consistency.

Fair points all Yogi.
I’d add one more area where I think we need to improve substantially: Set pieces, converting and defending them.

I think that the team need to improve both their defensive solidity as well as their conversation rate of chances created to goals scored.
Steve Bould already has his own job at the club and I am far from convinced that Arsene et al do indeed have more effective methods when it comes to defending, compared to the George Graham way.
I’d love to see Arsene & Arsenal swallow their pride and re-hire George Graham & his trusty side kick Stewart Houston, specifically to work on the team’s defending, individually & collectively. I think such a move would be worth it’s weight in gold & points saved per season.
In addition, I really believe that the team need an additional centre half – someone who’s commanding, dominant in the air, has good technical ability & has pace too.
The defence is simply too vulnerable in the air – step forward Kolo – and this needs to be remedied. I’d push Kolo to right back and play the suggested new centre half alongside Gallas.

Like it Yogi! A call for patience, faith and in particular unity. For Wenger’s best sides defended as a team, often hunting in packs, stealing quick ball and countering urgently. This team is not the same but it would be good to see a stronger team ethic in defence. Hungrier midfielders and wide men, not only ensuring our attacking full backs are not over exposed but helping our attackers to break and flow into clearer space. Up the work rate and the focus and this team can grow now into a special side.

Very perspective article YW and interesting comments too. Good to see the enthusiasm particularly at a time when some hearty Gooners see us as “way behind the Spuds”.
Defence is not just the about the personnel but the system & defending from the front, which was something TH14 only did when he felt like it. I have no wish to have a go at him but that was the way it was.
If the suggestion, that Flamini might be staying and prepared to play RB, were true it would be a great option for me. He is now experienced, a sensible player with the ability to tackle & get forward. He is one with the spirit to dig deep as he did in the CL run.
It would develop his career too because, although he is a decent CM, he will never be a great there. He will not be an automatic choice as a CM but could well become one as a FB.

Flamini’s an interesting case; prepared to stay and play RB but not LB according to reports. However, in the same breath it seems he has Valencia hanging on for him so I would be surprised if he is still here by the start of the season.

You’re right YW – if Valencia are offering him a chance to play in his favoured CM position then I think he will be off.
Magneto – Kolo has had one mixed season but you’re ready to shift him out of his position in favour of a potential newcomer who’s quality we know little about?

Chelsea and liverpool are harbouring false hope’s.
Before the arrival of both of there billion air owner’s they were no where now that they have money they think they also have the nouse and quality to go toe to toe with every one and they do not.
Chelsea won two title’s on the back of a restructureing of both man utd and arsenal it is as simple as that.
Not to mention that arsenal had a lot more on there plate than the other three with the building of our stadium and restructureing of the squad.
I personally think that both chelsea and liverpool are makeing a mountain out of a mole hill when reffering to arsenal.
Liverpool have spent god now’s how mutch money on player’s dureing this preseason and the question i have to ask my self is what have they got for there money…
Unproven tallent is what they have got and all the player’s they have sighned still have to prove them selve’s,they have to prove they can hold there own in the premierleague they also have to intergrate into the liverpool squad and get those three point’s game after game and i for one do not think that can do it.
Chelsea are just about the biggest joke of a football club in my opinion,no disrespect to there fan,s but if you have a bottomless pit of finacial money then a torso with no leg’s and arm,s or a head could manage the team.
As for there manager well let’s just say he has no class what so ever.
Arsenal dispite all the hit that has been thrown at us by every one are the best team in england.
We have the best stregnth in depth.Pretty mutch every player on our book’s got invaluable exsperience last season and i do mean every player.
Wenger used the kid’s in the carling cup and they went all the way to the final and did amazeingly well they practically embarressed supposidly world class player’s in lampard and terry.
The first team had a run of bad luck second only to hitler’s attempt’s to rule the world it was unbeliveable.
I don’t think thierry henry was injured at all i think he told wenger he wanted to go and wenger dicided strait away in what i see as a master stroke to leave henry out and let the rest of the team get used to playing with out him well done to wenger because the football was good just lacked the fax in the box player and consistancy.
A few thing’s about last season impressed me…
Double over united/Double over tottingham/Triple over liverpool and also we were very unlucky not to add a double over chelsea.
We lost van percy henry rosicky gallas to injury eboue for a short time also and we finished the season level on point’s with liverpool and …. 10 POINT’S CLEAR OF FIFTH PLACE.
Now how on earth people think that arsenal on a downfall is begger’s belife.
I am in the opinion that we are in for a great season this season.
The squad is strong in depth and does not need majoure change’s just one or two.
We singhed a sort of fox in the box player in eduardo and i think we will benefit greatly from his exsperience next season.
Just who else wenger will bring in is any body’s guess.
Now to wenger he does not give me theimpression that he take’s any of the jibe’s seriouslty and i am starting to think that this man is getting just as fired up as his player’s will be come the start of the season.
The one thing you have to remember is that arsene wenger thrive’s on this sort of thing indeed looking back he is most deffinately in his element when pitting his witt’s against the like’s of sir alex and other’s.
Arsenal will be more than ok and think about it action’s speak lowder than word’s.
Chelsea/Liverpool/Tottingham/Man utd all have to play us next season and i deffinately think we will whipe the floor with them we are a better team.

Some random spelling but plenty of passion Michael. Well done to you for getting it all out. Half the time it is hard to bother with all the defeatists. Some of us are confident in the current squad and feel Wenger will appreciate the challenge of the American dollars and the Russian roubles. While the boss is at the helm, his talent spotting and developing gives the less spineless of us plenty of belief. Not to mention his ability to create the best of footballing sides. No frightened Gooners here!

Lets hope that pre season set pieces are given priority, both defensive and attacking. We can afford going behind after attcking for 30 minutes and then lack of concentration and we are One down.
Fabianski should play in most pre season games and if hes as good as people say in poland, the minute Lehmann has crazy tantrums he should be OUT and Fab in.
The back four Gallas Toure, Clichy and Ebuoe got slaughtered by Liverpool they need to practice as a unit

Flamini is still very young to football . if he was given more time on the pitch ,(if wenger showed faith in him ), he would of developed far better than Hleb and denilson maybe even better than rosicky..definately eboue .. he is gutz’ier than clichy, always prepared to put his body on the line when it comes to defense .
And i have to admit it for once i agree with amos .
it doesnt matter who our back four are , its just important
that the defence isnt spilt up and they play the same 4 week-in-week out .
Sport is all about refining your own personal skills , how can you do that when each week your playing next too a player with a different strength ..or weakness bit hard to refine any system in defense when from week to week it changes in personel

Senderos? I don’t rate him and don’t know why despite his poor quality as a big team CB Arsene is still keeping him. Djourou is far better and will definitely make it. It’s not only Drogba, Blackburn’s McCarthy also made him useless as well as Boro’s Viduka. Now at 23 and 6-7 years at Arsenal, there is no more development in him. He’s had enough chances and blown it. Last season, Arsene had to rely on Gilberto while he sat on the bench. I’m sure Arsene is waiting for an offer and offload him. Something always happen wrongly with him when he comes on or starts. The guy flourishes in a defensive set up like our 4-5-1 formation during our Champions league run to the final; with our mid field loaded, he got a lot of assistance from Gilberto. His weaknesses include; serious lack of pace, poor turning, poor tackling, average heading and inflexibilty as a CB. In fact he can’t be a CB for any attack-minded team ‘cos he’ll be caught in a counter-attack as he often does with Arsenal. He should be sold. We can get 5+ for him.
