Silva Dream Machine, Cesc And A Bad Day For ‘Old Boys’

It’s days like yesterday that prove a Bloggers lot is not always an entirely happy one. Purely from a selfish point of view, I hasten to add. You spend hours thinking about a post, how you can defend the Manager’s policy of not rushing into the transfer market because every Tom, Dick and Harry demands it. Unconvincingly, you sort of come up with something. And what happens? Said Manager buys someone. A bolt from the blue. Well, thanks a bleedin’ lot Arsene, not even the courtesy of a mail or phone call to apologise. No, straight off to Wimbledon for some more R&R for him.

Anyway, the panic stricken are appeased. In Eduardo da Silva, Arsene has purchased a forward, someone who it seems is a genuine ‘goalscorer’. I am loathe to use the words ‘fox in the box‘ because I do not want to stigmatise the lad and he seems to have more about his game than that if the reports about him are true. It is a good time for him to be signed with the pre-season just starting so he has a little time to settle into the Club before the ‘action’ begins. I just hope that the weight of expectation being put on him does not turn into a millstone; that people give him a chance to settle and do not start getting on his back in the way that they did in Adebayor’s first half a season. Remember, Wenger is on record as saying that it takes six months for a new player to settle in this country so he will not be unduly concerned in that time.

In many respects, da Silva is a typical Wenger signing; known but not feted. He has a decent scoring record in his career thus far at Club and International level. I cannot say that much about him having been on holiday last year when he played at The Emirates and youTube is notoriously unreliable, showing the good but mysteriously missing out the bad. I would like to say though that scoring against Arsenal and England was a good sign but the reality is that neither of those tasks was overly arduous last season. For those who want to know more and have the linguistic skills to do so, you can pop over to the Dinamo Zagreb website (thanks Mario).

The bookies have already added him to their list at 20/1 to be top scorer in the Premiership next season, about halfway down the list of ‘top’ Club forwards but for a forward in his first season in a new country that seems a reasonable option. RvP is deemed to be Arsenal’s best hope in that respect at a healthy 11/1. His arrival has not persuaded the bookies to change their odds on us winning the Premiership, 12/1 still seems to be an ‘average’ sort of bet.

One thing though; he needs a new nickname. For those of us that have young children, Dudu is perhaps a reminder that we would rather not have every weekend…

It turned out to be a ‘good news’ day for the doom-mongers. Cesc’s Agent will hopefully have eased their tortured minds by talking to the BBC yesterday, trying to quash the persistent rumours of an impending transfer to Madrid or Barcelona,

These stories are normal but there is absolutely no truth in them whatsoever

Will that stop the rumours? No. But equally, it gives them no basis in any sort of truth if his Mr 20% is to be believed. Even so, for once they are the right words at an opportune moment, to boost the collective morale on a day of transfer activity, recognising Cesc’s elevation in the pecking order of important players (if he can get any higher, that is),

Thierry was a very important player for them and it is normal that now he is no longer there everyone thinks it is very bad news for the club. But Arsenal are going to buy a lot of good players and they are going to be a major team both in the Premier League and Champions League. Without Thierry, Cesc is one of the best players at Arsenal and this is fine for him, he is happy with the responsibility

So I trust those of you who ‘believed’ he was off are resting easier now.

It was not a good day to be an ‘ex’ or ’soon to be ex’ Arsenal player. Atletico de Madrid seem to be closing the door on Jose Antonio Reyes slightly by it seems progressing a long way down the road of signing Luis Garcia from Liverpool. Perhaps that is why Arsene has yet to rush out and buy a player to fill the wide left berth, that Reyes may yet return. I doubt he is holding his breath though. Sylvain Wiltord had his upturned collar felt yesterday for apparently failing to turn up in court for a hearing over a speeding offence. Had the Gendarmes been wearing a Manchester United shirt, I would have put money on him sprinting away from them but no they seem to have been wearing their usual uniforms for they caught up with him. Wiltord is one of the names mentioned in a ludicrous piece in The Times that tries to rain on your parade, claiming he was amongst Arsene’s clangers in the transfer market. No comparison with Mourinho or Ferguson in it and any piece that omits Igor Stepanovs just cannot be taken seriously.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Regarding his nickname, it never did Kaka any harm did it!

  2. Yea…remember the name Darren Peacock!!

  3. At least we have a song for him “du, du , du, du, du, du, du, du, du, du, du” – to any tune you choose – perhaps Barbara Ann?

  4. Arsene looks to have “done the double” with this purchase, helping settle a lot of the anxiety and throwing in some scatological laughs for good measure.
Yogi, I’m glad you aren’t harping on the “fox in the box” theme: I’m almost beginning to think that description bears a hoodoo for the gunners.
Hopefully the lad won’t be burdened with too many expectations and allowed to settle down first.
    Good luck to him.

  5. Or you can base a chant on any song with Silver in the title, such as ‘Silver Machine’ by Hawkwind or even ‘Silver Dream Machine’ by David Essex.

  6. We could call him Eddie or even Ed

Ed on the back of my boys shirt would be cheap :)

  7. lets cheer up…..we had signed a prooven goalscorer…great news …

  8. At last an opportunist in the box, I thought at the beginning of last season AW had set in motion the tactics to play either more direct or use the wings in time honoured AW fashion, with Roscisky and Hleb weaving away and young Walcott learning to cover the pitch , RVP upstaging TH14 on occasions and then the dudu hit the fan with injuries and TH14 squabbling with the siblings, last year was a bit of fix and go sort of season and we still had enough class to see the team into the the top 4.
Talking of dudu, Drogba has hinted at AFC not being contenders, suppose he’s just following the party line.
I can at last see the team getting the ammunition to see off the Blackburns of this world, I thought Craptista would handle it but he proved to have a soft centre.
The problems for me is extra cover at the back as we seem to be thin if Gilberto goes on a sicky, also there were inconsistencies on the left and sometimes I felt Eboue could be great and not so great when the going got tough, with Hoyte you always got 100%

  9. Interesting reading what Slaven Bilic, ex hammers player now Croatia coach has to say about EDS, saying that he is not only an exceptional goal scorer but a creator of goals.

“Eduardo scores great goals but that is not all he can do. He can open space for other players in the team. Last season he had the most assists in the Croatian League. Arsenal fans will be delighted with him, I am sure of it.” – Slaven Bilic

  10. Frankly I am disappointed.

Watched the video on youtube and the boy doesn’t look to fit the Arsenal way.

Time and time again he had the opportunity to pass to a team mate and time and time again he kicked it off the pitch into that “onion bag” things behind the guy in green.

    A disgrace.

  11. CESC IS THE KEY
It turned out to be a ‘good news’ day for the doom-mongers. Cesc’s Agent will hopefully have eased their tortured minds by talking to the BBC yesterday, trying to quash the persistent rumours of an impending transfer to Madrid or Barcelona..

i think you can safely put anything fabs said in the garbage bin it hinges on arsene currently . only thing id say to him is play well, score 10 more and DONT GET BIGGER THAN THE CLUB.You have a LONG contract so get used to it ! …

REYES COME BACK ? not a chance . i heard 6 mil on the offer, pathetic .. im sure real will open their wallet, they just need a poke in the ribs. We are better off keeping him but will his heart be in it ? will the fans rip him apart?!

  12. Rocky surely we need a selfish striker who is going to take responsibilty for shooting and scoring our goals.

  13. Apropos the Reyes situation:
Assuming not much buyer interest is forthcoming, there may be room to try some “reverse” psychology:
Ask him to play well in the coming season and make himself more attractive to buyers in Spain, with the assurance that we’ll let him go, end season, for cash.
I don’t know how many years are left on his contract though. That’d be a factor too.

  14. haha very funny Rocky

  15. Silver Gunner,

You mention a term I am unfamiliar with … what are these “shootings” you mention ?

I know about goals, they are when the other team falls over after being passed to death and we pass the ball to someone stood just over the goal line.

  16. Dislexya comes with age as well.
I said the ‘left’ and meant the ‘right’

  17. the way i hear it karthic

is he doesnt like the UK .Maybe he didnt like TH14 or so the rumours go , but he doesnt like the climate and being away from his family/ homeland. Pretty hard to get him to commit, you would have to classify that as a pipe dream .He’d probly be BOO’ed off the pitch.. if arsenal are stalling they are playing roulette as it seems most leads are drying up for him . maybe we will only get 8 or 9 mil. for him ! ?

But i agree theres a chance he might return, if he just wants to play football .. He didnt strike me the type of player to be happy on the bench and wait his turn .. (like at RM)
s’pose baptista was treated a little like that also . A bit hard to get the best out of a player .. when they are on loan only at a TOP CLUB….
UNLESS ITS A YOUNGSTER TO A LOWER DIVSION ! BENTNER AND LUPOLI WERE OUTSTANDING LAST YEAR .same the italian left ..

speaking of which have we loaned anyone ?? yogi ?

  18. The rumour mill has mentioned Djourou to Watford.

  19. Rocky

’shooting’ is something you do after Arsenal plays there passing game .. last year it left us at times THIS YEAR WATCH OUT ! just 2 words 4 u

    DA-SILVA

damb critic must be a Jealous SPUD !go back to your bulgarian
hunting grounds only brazillian strikers turned croats here .

  20. Rocky if we had a finisher last season we would surely have taken 3rd spot if not 2nd but instead we headless chicken Baptista and soon to come good Adebayor in TH14 and RVP absence.

With EDS i hope we can convert a few more of our chances, and if our mid starts scoring we will be challenging for top spot.
    :D

  21. Ethan,

You should realise the name “Rocky” is a nod to our fantastic and now sadly deceased David Rocastle and adorns my shirt every season “Rocky 7″

So the spud reference is a little harsh.

    Damn Gooner Noobz.

  22. AW had the press looking the other way with EDS, maybe another youngster or 2 after the Copa America, possibly a Mexican as companion to Carlos Vela (for the no.9 shirt).
You have to admire the man, whilst he watches tennis in S.W.19 his network of spies (scouts) are carrying out orders and making the press look like the plods tripping over their pens, Machivellean or what.

  23. RvP will be slotting them home Eduardo will be bedding in.

No pressure on him though Arsenal.Con just quoted odds for him to be Golden Boot !

  24. Ethan,
I was clutching at straws apropos Reyes.
Shame really; that’s a lad with a lot to offer. It’ll show up as a loss making transaction on our books it seems. But then, a unhappy player is no player at all.

  25. Typical Wenger! Good and potentially great signing out of nowhere – how does he do it?

I suspect we’ll mostly see an RVP/Adebayor pairing up front to start, with support from Eduardo/Bendtner on the bench while Walcott continues to learn his trade on the wing.

Potentially this looks like a better balanced set up, which is what Wenger said he was looking for. I’m really looking forward to the pre-season games to see how this team gels on the pitch.

  26. he probly looks at the topscorers on the euro charts , and then runs through his check list of -cost- age-experience . looks like the end return was da-silva.. looks promising so far . lets see him on the pitch first .. then we can pat ourselves on the back.. i seem to remember baptista, was a goal scoring hero too!

  27. This year is make or break for adebayor, he is going to have to start pliving up to his hype.

  28. Silver

Why make or break for Adebayor. To say he has not performed well is completely missing the point about his performances last season. From February onwards, he was the only forward who turned up for many games.

The only hype he came with was as a troublemaker and he has not lived up to that at all; long may that continue.

    YW

  29. Adebayor held the fort like ‘gunga bloody din’ and held his own in the verbal stakes with the press, definitely made of the right stuff, should be mentioned in dispatches and all that. Might have more of a chance to express his talents and skills this season

  30. I agree – why are people so critical of Adebayor? Yes he missed some sitters, but his all round contribution is outstanding and he is much more skillful than some people realise. If you avoid listening to the nay-sayers online and actually watch him during the course of a game you would actually see his running off the ball, holding and set up play. I’m sure his conversion rate will improve and out of the shadow of Henry we will see much more from Ade cool.

  31. I’m a Brazilian gooner — “Dudu” is a very common nickname for “Eduardo” in Brazil, more common than “Edu.” And as someone said, “Kaka” (which comes from Ricardo — his baby brother called him “kaka” when young Ricardo was still a kid himself) hasn’t suffered much from his nickname.

    I like the “Crozillian” moniker.

I started reading a little about Dudu in the Brazilian press during the world cup last year, when Croatia met Brazil in the group stages. He got great write-ups in the Globo, Estado de Sao Paulo, Veja and Folha de Sao Paulo newspapers.

From what I remember, Eduardo’s parents have a Croatian family connection and they emigrated there when he was teenager. He apparently suffered a lot from the cold but eventually adapted and came to love his adopted country. He speaks the language fluently now and deliberately chose to represent Croatia instead of trying out his footballing fotunes in Brazil, where he might’ve made it at least on the domestic league level.

  32. Dudu is not marketable at all. Crozillian sounds like a Croatian Godzilla which is not cool either. How about we keep it really simple and call him The Invader.

  33. On ths Adebayor subject when I look at his international record I expected more from him in an Arsenal shirt, he has all the right attributes to be an excellent player but at times last season wondered whether he would cut the mustard at arsenal or go the same route that Kanu went after initial early promise again this year for me will be a defining one for the Togolese striker.

  34. i agree with silver,

ade ! needs to start finding the back of the net . and like you said yogi he was the only one turning up to games . SO SHOULDNT HIS GOAL TALLEY BE MORE THAN 12 from 44 STARTS ! thats 1 goal every 4 starts ..

  35. Wenger has completely gutted the team of champs 2004!
But this is how wenger works. When he rebuilds he does it quick and now we have a fresh young side in front of us in the space of 3 seasons! No wonder we havent won the league in that time but the future holds great things for us now i’m sure of it. Robin Van Persie should be unstoppable this season and we will see about the rest of our front line.
